Service Sector: Public – Community centers are made to be
accessible and benefit the general public (Lunn, 2021). It
provides services at affordable prices that allows for
community engagement and physical fitness. There are many
community centers in North Vancouver, one membership
allows access to all the North Vancouver rec centers. The rec
centers are also run by the municipal government which
allows different rec centers to run programs specific for the
area they are in as it is directly influenced by the public
(Lunn, 2021).

5. Delbrook
Community
Center
SPSC 2210 Connection: Recreation – This is a good example of
recreation because it services the general public for local sport
and recreation (Lunn, 2021). It also encourages the community
to join programs and activities held at the facility. The presence
of the community center helps create a cohesive community and
creates a space that is open to everyone (Lunn 2021).
6. Lonsdale Skate Park
Address: 2428-2446 Lonsdale Ave, North Vancouver, BC V7M 3L1
Service Sector: Public – The Lonsdale skate park allows the general public a space to generate
an active lifestyle (Lunn, 2021). As it is a decently large open space that is easily accessible it
allows the community a space to participate in social and recreational activities (Lunn, 2021).
This skate park and the area surrounding it is also used by the community for an event called
“CityFest” where the community is encouraged to get out and participate in a run community
event.

7. Lonsdale Skate
Park
SPSC 2210 Connection: Recreation – This is a
great example of recreation because it
provides a space for the general public to
participate in recreation (Lunn, 2021). It
accommodates all age groups, sexual
orientation, and gender expression, and skill
level (Lunn, 2021). It is maintained by the city
as it falls under the municipal government
(Lunn, 2021). This space services individual
and collective interests of the community
(Lunn, 2021).
8. Handsworth Secondary
Address: 1044 Edgewood Road, North Vancouver, BC V7R
1Y7
Service Sector: Public – Public schools are an integral
part of society as they are necessary (Lunn, 2021). They
give kids the opportunity for education and provide
opportunities for sports, arts programs and general life
skills to be obtained. Handsworth is one of the many
secondary schools located in North Vancouver and is
apart of School District No. 44.

9. Handsworth Secondary
SPSC 2210 Connection: Recreation, Physical Education and Coaching –
Handsworth offers opportunities for recreation, physical education and
coaching. It gives equal opportunity to everyone. It is a necessary
service that benefits society and the general public (Lunn, 2021).
Handsowrth is known for their sports and drama programs. When covid
is not happening, the school puts on a play that incorporates every
grade of drama classes and is even written by the senior students. This
program is available to anyone who takes the drama program regardless
of gender expression, sexual orientation and financial status, if you go to
the school and are in the drama program you can participate. The sports
program is also highly regarded. Anyone can join if they attend the
school. Tryouts are present, but from grade 8-10 if there are enough
students, everyone will have the opportunity to be on the team. When I
went to Handsworth, there was no women's rugby team, but because
there were enough people that wanted to join, one was started.

11. SD44
Volleyball
Academy
Address: 1860 Southerland Ave, North
Vancouver, BC V7L 4C2
Service Sector: Commercial – The SD44
academy is a great example of the
commercial sector. According to the
SD44 website, the academy can cost
anywhere from $1885-$2175 depending
on what stream you enroll in, and an
additional fee of $935 is added to
students who are from outside the SD44
district. It takes the place of PE for those
enrolled. It is based on the demand for a
high level of specialized training. It is also
only available to those who can afford it
and are in grades 8-12.

12. SD44 Volleyball
Academy
SPSC 2210 Connection: Physical
Education, Coaching – The purpose of
the academy is to provide specialized
physical education. It allows the
students to learn and grow as volleyball
players in hopes to develop them into
outstanding athletes. The academy also
provides coaching jobs to the
community, although the requirements
are detailed.

13. Grouse
Mountain

Vancouver, BC V7R 4K9
Service Sector: Commercial – This is a
great example of a company in the
commercial sector. It allows access to the
mountain at a cost and is based on
consumer desire (Lunn, 2021). From the
fees charged, and other things that
require spending on the mountain, it
generates a profit (Lunn, 2021). It is
available to anyone that can afford and
can access the mountain.

Physical Education, Coaching –
Grouse mountain provides a space
for recreation because it offers
hiking trails, and snow sports. One of
the many services offered on the
mountain includes ski lessons. This
provides physical education and
coaching opportunities to the
community.

15. YYoga

Service Sector: Commercial – Yyoga is another
great example of a company in the commercial
sector. It provides a yoga classes at a cost which
generates profit (Lunn, 2021). It was created
because there is a high demand for yoga classes,
and they provide a high level of service (Lunn,
2021). It is available to anyone who can afford
their classes but targets people with more
spendable income (Lunn, 2021).

16. YYoga
SPSC 2210 Connection: Recreation,
Physical Education, Coaching -
YYoga offers a space for people to
participate in recreational yoga.
During classes people expand their
knowledge of yoga which leads to a
higher level of physical education.
YYoga also offers teacher training to
encourage people to become yoga
instructors, leading to teaching or
coaching opportunities in the
community.

18. Power to Be
Address: 182 Pemberton Ave, North Vancouver, BC V7P 2R5
Service Sector: Non-Profit – This is an amazing example of a volunteer or non-profit entity.
Power to Be says its mission is to “remove barriers and create access to nature” (2021). It
survives from volunteers, partners, donations, and fundraisers (Lunn, 2021). It is offered to
those who may not have the opportunity to experience nature. That could be due to disability or
financial burdens. The foundation functions out of Victoria and Vancouver, both very beautiful
areas with lots of outdoor opportunities.

19. Power to Be
SPSC 2210 Connection: Recreation, Physical Education,
Coaching – Power to Be offers the opportunity for
everyone to experience outdoor recreation. Through its
volunteers it removes the roadblocks many face and
gives equal opportunity to everyone. Through this it
enhances physical education of its participants as these
are areas and activities, they may not have been able to
do before. Power to Be also offers coaching or leadership
opportunities to its volunteers who come from the
community.

20. North Shore
Neighbourhood House
Address: 225 2nd St E, North Vancouver, BC V7L 1C4
Service Sector: Non-Profit – This is another non-
profit in the North Vancouver community.
According to the NSNH website, they “strives to
build a safe, healthy and strong community,
welcoming all ages, abilities and cultures” (2021).
NSNH offers programs and services for children,
family, youth and seniors in the community. NSNH
survive on donations and membership fees but
their services are available to everyone. NSNH
meets the need that the community had and builds
a safe community environment.

Education, Coaching – North Shore
Neighbourhood House offers recreational
opportunities to the community. It offers out
trips, cooking classes, book clubs, open gyms,
community gardens, food banks and so much
more. The activities offered not only increase
physical education, but community
engagement as well. Earlier in the slide show
CityFest was mentioned. NSNH is a core
contributor to CityFest as it offers an inclusive
event for the community. NSNH also requires
volunteers which leads to coaching and
leadership opportunities in the community.
22. The Polygon Gallery
Address: 101 Carrie Cates Ct, North Vancouver, BC V7M 3J3
Service Sector: Non-Profit – The Polygon Gallery functions through memberships and donations.
The cost to view the gallery is by donation because they thought it was important to “remove
financial barriers” (2021). They highlight artists in the community and focus on “expanding
engagement with indigenous communities” (2021).

23. The Polygon
Gallery
SPSC 2210 Connection: Recreation,
Coaching – The Polygon Gallery states
they “engage[s] visitors through
lectures, tours, film screenings, live
performances, and staged
collaborations” (2021). They offer a
space for everyone to be able to enjoy
and offer opportunities people to
volunteer and educate others on the
exhibits being featured.
