3. #1: Sungod Recreation Center
7815 112 St, Delta, BC V4C 4V9
One of Delta’s two (and
arguably better) Recreation
Centers. Facilities open to
the public include an
athletic gym, a weight and
cycling gym, a
physiotherapy office,
several pools and a hockey
rink. This multitude of
facilities provides
opportunities for “Fitness,
sport, age-related
programs, events, arts,
leadership, etc.” (Lunn,
2021, p.3)

4. SPSC 2210 Connection:
Recreation, Physical
Education, Coaching
The Sungod Recreation Center is an
example of recreation through the large
number of facilities open to the public.
“Recreation is a fundamental human need
for persons of all ages and is essential to a
person’s physical and social well-being
and to overall quality of life” (Lunn, 2021,
p.5), and the SRC helps to provide for that
need with programs such as public swims
and skates. This falls within the municipal
governments to ensure that the
recreational needs of the public are
addressed (Lunn, 2021, p.5). The SRC also
offers (through its own staff, not members
of a club or organization) aquatics
programs and swimming lessons to persons
of all ages, helping teach Physical
Education.

5. #2: Watershed Park
11600 Kittson Pkwy, Delta, BC V4E 1C5
The Watershed is a large Provincial
park in Delta. It has picnic areas,
meadows, and hosts a Scout Camp and
an annual salmon release in its main
water stream. There is also a
freshwater drinking tap at the center
of the park. The main attraction
however is its multitude of trails for
cycling, walking, jogging or horseback
riding. It is a public sector because it
is, “…free… necessary for society
Public good (indirect/direct benefit to
all), accessible” (Lunn, 2021, p.3)

6. SPSC 2210
Connection:
Recreation
The Watershed is an example of
recreation in that in fulfills one of the
rules of public recreation: “The
primary responsibility for identifying
and meeting recreation needs rests
with the individual” (Lunn, 2021, p.6).
This is because there are no programs
or facilities beyond that of the park
itself, and so it rests with the
individual to recognize and make use of
the Watershed. This also means that
the Watershed falls under the
provincial government as it is their
duty, “To promote the preservation,
protection, and enjoyment of natural
resources” (Lunn, 2021, p.4)

7. #3: North Delta Community Park
11311 84 Ave, Delta, BC
North Deltas largest
athletic/community park. Includes
Softball diamonds, tennis courts,
playgrounds, soccer fields, a skate
park and ‘forest’ trails (literally a
tiny forest that takes about 30
seconds to travel through. But it is
there!). All fields, courts and parks
are open to the public, any time of
year. It is therefore part of the
public sector (Lunn, 2021, p.4).

8. SPSC 2210
Connection:
Recreation
The park was created by the Municipal
Government to directly address the
recreational needs of the public (Lunn,
2021, p.5), and it is also maintained by
the City of Delta. The park offers a large
variety of outdoor activities for the
average person to leisurely enjoy, as well
as facilities to host organized teams and
clubs. That is why it is an example of
recreational services.

10. #1: World Martial Arts Academy
11939 88 Ave, Delta, BC V4C 3C9
World Martial Arts is a martial arts academy and my home gym. The academy
offers a Taekwondo program and a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu program, with classes for
kids, teens, and adults. Lessons are taught by either martial arts masters or
extremely qualified instructors (such as myself!). The gym also sells training
equipment, therefore offering, “unique products and services” (Lunn, 2021,
p.8). The academy receives a majority of its revenue from student tuitions.

11. SPSC 2210 Connection: Recreation,
Physical Education, Coaching
Because of the contents of the programs
offered at World Martial Arts, that being martial
arts, they provide students with physical
education as well as an avenue for recreation.
Through the instructor program, students can
learn valuable coaching skills as well (such as
myself!). The primary type of service that is
offered is indoor commercial recreation. These
services are offered to, “anyone who can afford
the service” and are “provided at own facilities”
(Lunn, 2021, p.7).

12. #2: Strawberry Hills Cineplex Cinema
12161 72 Ave, Surrey, BC V3W 2M1 (I could throw a rock from Delta and hits Strawberry Hills, so it counts)
The Strawberry Hills Cinema
is North Delta’s (well
technically Surrey’s) local
movie theatre. Because of this,
it receives scores of revenue
from movie goers (participants)
and hosting new movies
(corporate sponsorship) (Lunn,
2021, p.7). They had also just
finished the costly renovation
of putting an arcade in the
main foyer, but it’s up in the air
right now whether that will
remain post-COVID, as the
theatre has been shut down for
nearly a year now. Also offers
kiosks full of movie
memorabilia and theater foods
like popcorn, fries, hotdogs,
nachos, etc.…

13. SPSC 2210
Connection:
Recreation
By virtue of the products that
Cineplex sells, it is mainly a
recreation hub. They are in the
business of offering, “entertainment
services… hospitality/food services,
and retail activities” (Lunn, 2021,
p.6). However, as a slightly negative
consequence, the theatre is known
to have an above average crime rate
as some movies end late at night,
making some movie goers easy prey

14. #3: Scottsdale Lanes Bowling Alley
12033 84 Ave, Surrey, BC V3W 3N4
(Refer to Strawberry Hills) (Also
Scottsdale Mall is in Delta so ha)
Scottsdale Lanes is a 5-pin
bowling alley that provides
bowling lanes and a small bar. It
mainly hosts public bowling
events, but there are several
bowling clubs that make use of
the facilities. They also host
birthday parties! Scottsdale lanes
provides both entertainment
services as well as
hospitality/food services (Lunn,
2021, p.6)

15. SPSC 2210 Connection: Recreation
As a commercial business,
Scottsdale Lanes was created to
provide recreational services to
the public through bowling. It is
an example of indoor commercial
recreation (Lunn, 2021, p.6), and
the focus clientele is the general
public, “Anyone who can afford
the service, provided at own
facilities” (Lunn, 2021, p.7).

17. Hillside Boys
and Girls
Club
11339 84 Ave, Delta, BC V4C 2L9
The Boy and Girls Club of South Coast BC is a
children and youth organization that offers
clubs, camps, arts and crafts, sports and
academic assistance (BGC, 2021). Hillside Club
is their North Delta Location. Hillside lies
directly beside the North Delta Community
Park (from the public sector), therefore
allowing members to make use of all those
facilities in addition to the ones provided at
the club, which include 2 small gyms, foosball
and pool tables, and others.

18. SPSC 2210 Connection: Recreation
The Boys and Girls Club of
Canada’s primary service is
the creation of recreational
facilities and events for
children and youth. The
Hillside Club has close ties
to the community, as all of
it’s staff members are of
course volunteers from the
community (Lunn, 2021,
p.8). The Hillside Club also
allows its facilities to be
used by other
organizations, specifically
the two small gyms.

19. 1867 Seaforth Highlanders Army Cadet Corp
11584 Lyon Rd, Delta, BC V4E 2K4
1867 Seaforth Highlanders of Canada Royal
Canadian Army Cadet Corp is Delta’s local
Army Cadet unit. The Corp offers programs
such as air rifle courses, leadership
workshops, community events (such as
Remembrance Day parades), and through
the greater Cadet Program things such as
summer camps, paratrooper courses, and
camping (called Field Training Exercises).
Funding for this Youth group is provided by
the government, and thereby subsidized by
the taxpayer (Lunn, 2021, p.9).

Connection:
Recreation, Physical
Education, Coaching
The cadet program offers such a myriad
of opportunities and events, that it
easily covers all 3 of our SPSC
connections. Recreation in the form of
things like air rifle courses. Physical
Education from physical training nights.
And coaching through leadership
workshops. Although funding is provided
by the government, there's only so much
money to split between all the cadet
corps, making fundraising very
important to the program (Lunn, 2021,
p. 10)

21. #3: North Delta Sunfish Swim Club
Many different locations at various pools
There are quite a few swim clubs in delta, but
the Sunfish swim club is definitely one of the
biggest and offers the most in terms of high-
level instruction and competition. They offer
three programs; swimming, water polo, and
artistic swimming. As a swim club, they cover all
5 key features of nonprofit organizations,
“organized, private, non-profit distributing, self-
governing, and voluntary” (Lunn, 2021, p.8).
