3. Power To Be is a non-profit organization that creates access to nature for youth,
families, and adults living with cognitive, physical, financial, and social barriers. This
falls into the volunteer sector because it is self-governing, non-profit organization
that offers subsidized fees (Lunn, 2021, p.8).
This organization is connected to recreation because it provides people with an
opportunity to get out into nature with activities like kayaking, surfing, hiking,
camping, and snowshoeing. The program promotes health and well-being through
recreation as well as the preservation, protection, and enjoyment of natural
resources (Lunn, 2021, p.4).

4. North Vancouver
Football Club (NVFC)
• NVFC is a in the non-profit sector because it relies heavily
on volunteers to run the organization (Lunn, 2021, p. 8). It
is also good for society and community (Lunn, 2021, p. 8).
It is highly inclusive - open to all ages (starting at 4y/o),
skill levels, ethnicities, and genders.
• This organization connects with Physical education,
recreation, and coaching. NVFV allows the athletes to
improve their athletic abilities, develop fundamental
movement skills, and learn to be more physically literate.
Even though it is volunteer, head coaches still need to be
certified to run their teams.

5. North Van Arts is a social-profit, charitable organization
that serves emerging artists. It consists of a volunteer
board of directors, an executive and support staff, and
over 100 dedicated volunteers. This organization is
part of the non-profit sector because it establishes an
organizational culture, invests in leisure and
recreation, and it relies on members (Lunn, 2021, p. 8)
This organization is connected to recreation because it
offers recreational and leisure activities/services to the
general public (Lunn, 2021). Their mission is to enable
artists to bridge cultures, and to build strong and
healthy communities through the arts.

6. Gator’s Gym
Gator’s gym is a privately owned gym that is open to
the community. This business falls under the
commercial sector which is deemed as recreation for
which the consumer pays, and the supplier expects
to make a profit (Maclean el al, 1985, as cited by
Lunn, 2021, p. 6). Additionally, Gator’s Gym
increases recreation opportunities for residents in the
area (Lunn, 2021, p. 7)
This business can be connected to coaching and
physical education as they offer personal training,
drop-ins, group training, and team training for
athletes. Their services can help athletes with long
term athletic development as well as improving
athletic abilities and building fundamental movement
skills. It is also connected to recreation because
people can drop in as a leisure activity.

7. Semiahmoo
Athletic Club
(SAC)
• Similar to Gator’s gym, SAC is a privately owned crossfit gym that is part of the
commercial sector. It offers its equipment and services for a fee which it
expects to profit from (Lunn, 2021, p. 6), making their focus clientele anyone
who can afford to pay it (Lunn, 2021, p. 7).
• This gym offers personal training, crossfit classes, as well as strength and
conditioning for sports teams which can be connected to coaching, physical
education, and recreation. SAC provides people with an opportunity to gain
knowledge about physical literacy, improve athletic abilities as well as partake
in workouts as a recreational activity.

Kayak
Centre
DCKC offers rentals, private and group tours, weekly fun races, as well as lessons
for a fee which they expect to profit from, which makes them part of the
commercial sector (Lunn, 2021, p. 6).
This business can be connected with recreation as it offers leisure services in the
nature environment which is a great way for people to be physically active (Lunn,
2021, p. 6). They provide a variety of vessels for rental including kayaks,
paddleboards, surfskis, and dragon boats.

9. Parkgate
community
Centre
The Parkgate Community Centre provides recreation that reinforces values an ideals
of establishing and maintaining a healthy lifestyle (Lunn, 2021, p. 3). It is open to the
public and allows them to access fitness, sport, events, arts, and age-related
programs that are deemed a public good (Lunn, 2021, p. 4).
PCC is connected with recreation and physical education by the numerous activities
that it offers; including access to their gym, fitness classes, personal training, camps
for youth, and programs for all ages. PCC serves the needs of the community in north
Vancouver with their recreation and leisure services at an affordable rate that is
subsidized so it is easily accessible and more inclusive (Lunn, 2021, p. 4)

10. Seycove
Secondar
y School
Seycove is one of the many highschools in the north Vancouver area. It is part of
the public sector because it provides services such as arts, sports, leadership, age
related programs, and events (Lunn, 2021, p. 3).
This relates to PE and coaching because it offers deemed a public good and offers
students participation on sports teams at a subsidized rate (Lunn, 2021, p. 3). The
school also gives students the opportunity to partake in a variety of recreation and
leisure activities, which are usually coordinated by volunteers. PE is mandatory for
all students from grade 8 to 10. Participation helps to develop knowledge of physical
literacy and teach students different ways to be physically active.

11. Myrtle Park
Myrtle park is a public park which is
available for people to walk, play sports, play
in the park, have a picnic, or a variety of
other acitivities. Public parks are places are
people of all ages and is essential to a
persons physical and social wellbeing and to
overall quality of life (Lunn, 2021, p. 5). The
park is funded and maintained by the
community and their tax money.
This is an example of recreation because it
continually reinforces values and ideals of
establishing and maintaining a healthy
lifestyle to the user (Lunn, 2021, p. 3). Myrtle
park is available to all ages and is a great
space to partake in a wide variety of
activities.

12. What I have learned
This course adventure has helped me uncover more information and
discover the wide variety of services/activities offered in my community. I
have learned about the 3 main service sectors – public, commercial,
volunteer, and how to differentiate them. I will continue to appreciate the
wide variety of physical education, recreation, and coaching programs that
my community has to offer.
