The Crucible Compare And Contrast Truman And Oedipus
Was nothing real? the question Truma asked after he came to the realization that he was living in a
made up world that revolved around him. This moment was similar to the moment when Oedipus
became aware that the prophecy had come true, that he killed his father and married his mother. Both
Truman and Oedipus went through their lives believing one thing about the world, that they later
realized was completely false. Oedipus and Truman go through a similar journey leading up to the
revealing of the truth. At first, they both receive hints that lead them to believe things other than the
original truths. For Truman, he started noticing that his world was similar to a set and that people
knew who he was. For Oedipus, he thought about how Laius

The Golden Age Of Chinese Film Industry
During the 1930 s the Chinese Film Industry underwent several improvements in film techniques;
improvements in film quality and the advancements in sound quality, which led to this period being
called the Golden Age of Chinese film. Some very important directors of the time were Sun Yu,
Yonggang Wu and Muzhi Yuan saw the potential to educate the masses through the film Industry. This
was done by highlighting the problems in society; such as inequality between the genders. This was
done by showcasing the plight and struggles of the lower classes who struggled against society s
Confucian morality and values. The main areas that these directors focus upon in their films were
social issues, class struggles and urbanisation which can be seen in their films, Daybreak (1933) a film
about a traditional rural couple moving to cosmopolitan Shanghai only to be corrupted by the city. The
Goddess (1935) follow the life of a mother forced into prostitution and her struggle to put her son
through education. She suffers abuse from a Boss but also experiencing the social abuse and stigma
attached to her work. Street Angel (1937) which follows a group of friends who help each other in
their dire, poor circumstances and stand up against the oppression of being exploited by society.
Through these three films, these famous leftist directors educate the nation on the issues of the time.
One of the primary issues these films look at are the social problems of the 1930 s; this can be seen in

Demand Estimation Has Been At The Heart Of Many Studies
Literature Review Demand estimation has been at the heart of many studies that focus on questions
regarding market power, merger and acquisition, research and innovation and valuation of new brands
in differentiated products industries. Under the framework of demand estimation, Bresnahan (1987)
constructs equilibrium models of oligopoly under product differentiation and studies the competition
and collusion in the 1995 price war in the American automobile industry. Gasmi, Laffont and Vuong
(1992) study the collusive behavior on price and advertising in the U.S. soft drink market, which is
dominated by Coca Cola and Pepsi Cola, after obtaining a full information maximum likelihood

Firstly, there would be a large number of parameters to be estimated. For example, in a log log
demand system, where logarithms of quantities are linear functions of logarithms of all prices, without
additional restrictions, we would have 10,000 parameters if there were 100 differentiated products in
the market. The second concern introduced when doing demand estimation for differentiated product
is the heterogeneity in consumer tastes. Dixit and Stiglizt (1997) suggest a representative consumer
approach to deal with this. They assume that consumer preferences are of the right form so that an
average consumer exists; there exists a demand system that lends itself to the level of differentiation
observed in the marketplace. However, the required assumptions are strong and empirically false for
many applications (Nevo, 2000). The above two problems are addressed by logit demand model
(McFadden, 1973). The logit model solves dimensionality problem by projecting the products onto a
space of characteristics; in this way, the dimension of the attribute space instead of the square of the
number of products becomes the relevant size. However, due to the restrictive way of modeling
heterogeneity and the property of independence from irrelevant alternatives (IIA property) in the logit
model, substitution pattern between products is driven completely by

Apenas o que for
considerado mais importante é contabilizado, o restante é descartado. Desta forma, a mente humana

strongly believe that as you write more and more about a character, that they begin to reveal more and
more about themselves, from the standpoint that two unintentionally related traits may organically
foster another by extension of themselves, in this way the characters are revealing parts of themselves
to the author before the author reveals them to the reader.

With Johnson s life experiences and style of writing, it s no wonder that a good story with a criss cross

As a songwriter, photographer, freelance writer, video editor, lotion creator, and now a writer, it s no
wonder why Johnson would be stimulated by this quote Why sometimes I ve believed as many as six

Today, computers process the sound before it reaches the amp to your ears. But, you don t have any of
those things to help you. So, your choice in string can make a major difference in the sound you make
while you are playing. Gold, Silver, Brass, and Alloy strings all have different acoustical signatures.
You can even use nylon, natural fibers, and steel to get just the right sound you are looking for.
Consideration #4: Shape and properties of the acoustical cavity of the guitar
Resonance and echo take place inside the box of the guitar. From here you get the rich sounds that

Jane Smiley s Pretties
Would you say that this novel is a dystopia? Why or why not?
I think that it depends on what kind of a person you are. If you are really self conscious of yourself
and appearance, and think that plastic surgery is something amazing or magical , then you might think
that the idea of being able to become pretty at a certain age is great. On the other hand, if you the idea
of being pretty is something that is unrightfully favored or desired, then this novel would be
considered a dystopia. I fall right in the middle of those two opinions. I believe that the belief that you
can only be pretty if you undergo surgery if preposterous. Not to mention the whole idea of labels
such as Uglies and Pretties is just terrible and will make the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

I personally hope that in the novel Pretties (the sequel to Uglies), Something happens that will result
in Tally not becoming pretty . Tally s character is so different and has such a broad and in depth
understanding of the problems that are in her society. Not only because of the lesions, but her vision
on certain things would change. Using Shay as an example, she always seemed to have a negative
view on the whole pretty transformation, but after the procedure was done to her, she all of the sudden
loved the whole pretty lifestyle. She even loved the way she look, which is something I never could
have seen Shay doing after having a procedure such as this. One thing that I speculate is that the titles
of the novels represent Tally s progression throughout the story. She starts of as as an Ugly , than she
becomes pretty , she will later progress to a special (whatever that may mean, maybe working for or
with Special Circumstances), and last but not least become an extra . This is just a simple theory with
no research to back it up, just a guess. One thing I did notice is that they never actually saw Az s dead
body, Maddy simply just said he was taken for the operation and never came back, which means she
was not sure what happened exactly. I have a hope that he will actually turn out to be alive in the
second novel and we will see an appearance by him. I have no doubt in my mind that David will make
a reappearance in the second novel. I am also curious to see whether or not he chooses to accept that
Tally was a spy. Personally, I really hope he does because I really enjoyed reading about their
connection and I think it added a lot development to each character. That being said, I think that their
characters are not yet done developing, and when David comes back, they can help progress each

Teens s Early Puberty Stages
Puberty in teenager s early puberty stages can be effected by hormonal changes and imbalances.
Studies in high risk exposal areas of the world potential effects of related amounts of endocrine
disruptors at particular times of their developmental statuses can affect the timing of puberty.
Endocrine disrupters can be prevented during adolescent time frames by the parents purchasing
products of organic processes and keeping away from processed foods, some household chemicals,
pesticides, and plastics (Weiner, Lerner, and Easterbrooks, 2012). Low dose exposures have been
shown affect the hormonal roles in the body and, especially, in the endocrine system for women,
which can expose their uterus to estrogens that can cause breast cancer years later (Vandenberg, 2014).
Parents can read into the listings of the endocrine disruptors and effects with the NIH and CDC
websites. 2) Psychosocial development in teens: Puberty related mutations have evolved from certain
environmental settings, for example, father absence or early timing of puberty or menarche (Weiner,
Lerner, and Easterbrooks, 2012). Stressful family situations bring an onset of menarche with the girls
at an earlier age. At this stage research has seen the rapid changes of characteristics of physical
changes, substantial intellectual and expressive maturation, sexual interests and highly perceptive to
peer relations (Newman and Newman, 2014). Autonomy helps adolescents be achieved with strength

The Achilles tendon is the thickest and strongest tendon in human body. It connects with the

Orientalism
Chapter 1: The Scope of Orientalism.
Section 1: Knowing the Oriental.
At the beginning of this story, the writer Edward Said starts analyzing speeches and writings done by
two British Imperialists about Egypt in the early 20th century, with focusing on the stress imposed by
British authorities stating that they know better the Egyptian country so they have the total right to
rule it.
In other words, there were Westerns to dominate and Orientals to be dominated, which usually means
that they ll occupy their lands and control everything in it.
The reason behind the appearance of this domination was that France and Britain divided ... Show

In the beginning of this section, Said starts by stating the summary of previous two chapters.
He then distinguishes between 2 distinct forms of knowing and representing the West.
The distinction Said was building is between positivity, which is called hidden Orientalism, and
various views on the Eastern community and languages which is called clear Orientalism.
In the clear Orientalism, we can find all the changes that occurred in the Orient.
In addition to that, Orientalism presented the Orient to the West in many ways.
For years, Orientalism had explained and talked about Orient s texts, mores, traditions, civilizations
and cultures and they have been put aside because they are foreigners in Europe s eyes.
Section 2: Style, Expertise, Vision: Orientalism s Worldliness.
Researchers invented a category called Oriental for the same thing that any eastern individual could
face.
At that time, Oriental experts was not required to just understand the Orient.
Experts were also required to make the Orient act and their forces, traditions and civilizations should
be standing in the Western side.
This eventually led to the division of the Orient into two sides; The new version and the old

His agency insures home loans, traditionally for the same low income minority borrowers Mr. Bush
wanted to help. When he arrived in June 2005, he was shocked to find those customers had been lured
away by the fool s gold of subprime loans. The Ameriquest settlement, he said, reinforced his concern
that the industry was exploiting borrowers. In December 2005, Mr. Montgomery drafted a memo and
brought it to the White House. I don t think this is what the president had in mind here, he recalled

Falcon ran the Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight, a tiny government agency that

Congress, Fannie and Freddie called G.S.E. s, for government sponsored entities bought trillions of
dollars worth of mortgages to hold or sell to investors as guaranteed securities. The companies were
also Washington powerhouses, stuffing lawmakers campaign coffers and hiring bare knuckled

default on debt, setting off contagious illiquidity in the market in other words, a financial meltdown.
He also raised red flags about the companies soaring use of derivatives, the complex financial

Differences Between Island and Mainland Puerto Ricans
As many immigrants arrive in the United States of America and begin to call it home , comparisons
between such immigrants are certainly inevitable. In particular, the U.S. Hispanic population gives
more room for such comparisons since their cultures and traditions are very similar. Most of their
similarities stem from a common Spanish heritage. However, there is a lot more to being Hispanic
than just speaking Spanish or eating rice and beans. What most people do not understand is that there

The fact that island Puerto Ricans see themselves as a nation whereas mainland Puerto Ricans see
themselves as a minority and an ethnic group in The United States, gives rise to the main differences
that exist between the two. However, in order to delve into deeper comparisons between the ways in
which island and mainland Puerto Ricans self identify, it is imperative to understand the historical
events that have shaped Puerto Ricans and their heritage.
Puerto Rico s association with the United States and its metamorphosis began when in 1898 U.S.
troops invaded Puerto Rico during the Spanish American War. Up until that point, Puerto Rico had
remained one of Spain s last two colonies in the New World. Puerto Rico s Spanish heritage is seen
when Puerto Rican essayist Antonio Pedreira, writing in the 1930 s, termed the first three centuries of
Spanish rule a period of faithful prolongation of the Spanish culture (qtd. in Morris 21). Spanish
influence is also seen when without rejecting his Puerto Rican Spanishness, the Puerto Rican
considered himself a Spaniard from here with ideas and reactions different from those from there (qtd.

After the September 11th terrorist attack on the World...
After the September 11th terrorist attack on the World Trade Centre by the Islamic radical group al
Qaeda and the 2001 Anthrax attacks on two senators and several news media offices, congress rushed
to pass the USA Patriot Act, which roughly is an Act to deter and punish acts of terrorism in the
United States and around the world, to enhance law enforcement investigatory tools, and for other
purposes. After these unrelated terrorist attacks happened within weeks of each other congress knew
reform legislature was needed. Many Historians such as Brett Rubio believe that the USA Patriot Act
infringed upon American s civil liberties while the U.S. Government more specifically the Justice
Department believed it was necessary course of action ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The act also gives federal judges the authority to issue search warrants that are valid in the judge s
district as well as outside the judge s jurisdiction. Before the Patriot Act, if an agent wanted to search a
suspect s email, he or she had to get a separate warrant in each district the subject s Internet Service
Provider (ISP) appeared in in order to search the suspect s email. As the FBI Director continued in his
speech to congress this frustrating and time consuming process can be averted without reducing
judicial oversight. (FOOTNOTE 1) The time that used to be spent seeking multiple warrant for each
district is now being used more productively to investigate terrorists, and preventing attacks from
happening. Thirdly the Patriot Act has allowed the Department of Justice agencies able to fight a 21st
century battle against terrorism with 21st century tools. The Patriot Act approves the usage of roving
wiretaps, court ordered pen registers, and trap and trace devices to track internet communications to
name a few. Focusing on the roving wiretaps Mueller said, it is standard operating procedure for
terrorists to rapidly change locations and switch cell phones to evade surveillance. (FOOTNOTE 1).
The roving wiretap allows to agents to track terrorists through several phones even if they are
constantly changing to avoid being

Critical Analysis Of Abigail Adams And The Declaration Of...
The author of the document we are analyzing is Abigail Adams. Abigail Adams is a strong minded
women in her early thirties. (First Lady Biography) She is the wife of John Adams, a prominent figure
in the Continental Congress. From this document we can infer that Abigail is concerned about the
women and their rights. They have time and warning given them to see the Evil and shun it. I long to
hear that you have declared an independency and by the way in the new Code of Laws which I
suppose it will be necessary for you to make I desire you would Remember the Ladies, and be more
generous and favourable to them than your ancestors. (Adams, Letter) In this quote Abigail is
explaining to John that when they write the Declaration of Independence they should keep the women
in mind and be more supportive of them.
There are multiple intended audiences for this document. The primary intended audience is her
husband John Adams. The letter is specifically addressed to her husband John and mailed to him
privately. On the other hand it could also be considered a public letter. This document could be
considered a public letter because she is intending for John to tell the others how she feels. She wants
John to persuade the members of the Continental Congress to carefully consider women as they are
making their decisions on the new laws. Abigail wants John to convince the members of the
Continental Congress that women deserve to be heard and have equal rights.
The author, Abigail Adams,

Cholera Sparknotes
Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel Márquez delivers a tale of love set in Colombia in a time
amidst disease and civil war. The symptoms of lovesickness are described as the same as cholera, and
the conflict of the war mirrors the quarrels of love. The conflicted love tale begins with Fermina Daza
and Florentino Ariza experiencing young love. The two exchanged letters, filled with passion by
Florentino, yet their relationship was forbidden. Yet when Dr. Juvenal Urbino was determined to
marry Fermina, her father and even members of the church approved. Advocates of Urbino s advances
served as opposition to love when the love came from Florentino. Eventually as multiple hands force
her to succumb to the pursuit of Urbino, Fermina finds herself in a loveless ... Show more content on

Even when Fermina Daza had rejected Florentino Ariza in a lightning flash of maturity , her maturity
like lightning was momentary and fleeting (Márquez 203). The ephemeral nature of her maturity
stems from her inability to control her emotions. When she feels guilty she is overwhelmed by the
sensation. Fermina panics when she is plagued by the phantom of guilt and her inability to process her
emotions is highlighted (Márquez 204). Her lack of control over her emotions makes her child like,
but her need for validation reveals her immaturity. Whenever a mistake occurred like a child Fermina
Daza would immediately try to shift blame from herself and onto the nearest scapegoat. Her
immaturity caused a dire need to never be seen as at fault. Like a child she was not concerned with
who was responsible or with convincing herself of her own innocence: she was satisfied at having
established it (Márquez 205). Yet her innocence is a fault. Since she required others to reassure her of
her innocence, control of Fermina Daza was again placed in hands that were not her

Breaching Social Norm Experiment
For my breaching social norm experiment I was determined to do something I would never do even if
it was a dare, especially since my ability to interact with strangers is not the best. So, I decided to
make people feel uncomfortable by holding their hand. What I would do is walk up to the person from
behind and slowly make my way to their hand to make them feel even more uncomfortable. People
normally hold hands with their significant other, or with someone they know like a friend or family
member, so to be holding hands with a stranger is out of the ordinary and awkward. In preparation to
starting our experiment it took my confidant Carla and I about an hour to finally initiate the first move.
Before even holding hands with strangers my mind was swirling with multiple questions and thoughts,
like Why am I even doing this? , I don t appreciate making people feel uncomfortable. , Why is
Mrs.Henry torturing me! , Can I just not do it? , and so on. In addition to my thoughts and questions, I
felt myself sweating and my stomach felt as if it was in a twisted knot. While I approached my first
victim I felt the temperature of my body raise up to boiling point and the color of my skin turn from
snow white to lava red in a split second. To make things worse once I held onto the lady s hand she
was gripping onto mine and was holding on tight, and my reaction was to laugh because when you are
in an uncomfortable situation you honestly don t know how to react.

Religion and Hate Crimes Essay
In 2008, the Uniform Crime Reporting program of the U.S. Department of Justice Federal Bureau of
Investigation reported that 13,690 law enforcement agencies submitted hate crime data to the UCR
Program. Of these agencies, 2,145 reported 7,783 hate crime incidents involving 9,168 offenses and of
the 7,780 single bias incidents reported in 2008, 19.5 percent were motivated by religious bias (1).
The statistics of 2008 are alarming to look at because the numbers of hate crimes committed in that
year are exceedingly high. These numbers are in the thousands and most of these crimes are coming
from states like New York, New Jersey and California (Hate 1). The statistics only confirms that
religion is a major contributor into hate crimes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This movement wanted all different groups of people to live in peace and be free of any kind of
discrimination. However, it s clear that the civil rights movement did not carry out its goal because
many minorities like the Jewish people still suffer many hate crimes.
Christianity is the most prevalent religion in the United States. Many people belong to this religion.
However, what happens when you don t belong to Christianity? One religion that is not Christianity is
the Jewish religion. This religion is one of the most ancient religions that is still very much provident
today. However, this religion isn t a respected religion even after the Holocaust and Jewish people
continue to be the victims of many hate crimes. Donald Altschiller reinforces this speculation in his
book, Hate Crimes: a Reference Handbook, when he states that, anti Semitism has had a pernicious
history throughout the ages and around the world and Jewish hatred and violence has always been one
of the highest of hate crimes. These attacks are averaging 85 percent at Jewish Americans (16). It s not
hard to see that hate crimes against the Jewish is remarkably strong. It is strong enough to lease out a
rampage of violent attacks and murder. For example, Altshciller reports an incident of September 1996
where sixty grave markers were killed at the Bikur Choli Sheveth cemetery in Connecticut (16). The
grave markers were Jewish and were killed while on the

Galinese Cockfight Analysis
In comparing Zora Neale Hurston s Of Mules and Men and Clifford Geertz s Balinese Cockfight a
direct difference between insider verses outsider is portrayed. Hurston s approach of going back and
immersing herself into the culture she grew up in and Geertz s approach of immersing himself into a
foreign culture results in a clear distinction in their ethnographic approach, focus of observation and
consequently their findings.
The ethnographic approach taken by both Zora Neale Hurston and Clifford Geertz is that of
participant observation. Both Hurston and Geertz immerse themselves in the culture they have chosen
to study. Although this is a clear similarity in the two texts both authors go about it in different
manners. Geertz is also seen ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Geertz recognised that he and his wife were outsiders to the rest of the Balinese people until they ran
away from the authorities at the cockfight. The cockfight therefore forms the turning point in Geertz s
research as thereafter he was welcomed by the Balinese people because they saw him running away as
a form of solidarity with the Balinese people. This event formed the beginning of Geertz s actual
participant observation of cockfights and his fascination with the connection between cockfights and
the Balinese village society. Geertz s in depth description of cockfighting and all that comes with it
gives insight into the amount of field research he did. From the gambling aspect to the structured rules
we get a clear idea of extensive research done.
In a broad comparison between Hurston and Geertz s there are distinct differences in their approach to
the focus of their observation and the manner they went about achieving the aims of their research.
Hurston was studying her own culture and therefore had an insider s perspective going into her study
whereas Geertz entered a foreign culture with an outsider s

`` Fun Home, By Alison Bechdel
Part graphic memoir and part psychoanalytical study, Alison Bechdel s, Fun Home, is a charming
story about a girl s search for identity within an unconventional family. The novel style autobiography
frames Alison s childhood and adolescence as she struggles with themes of sexual confusion, gender
identity, and convoluted family dynamics. These ideas are explored through the examination of Alison
s relationship with her father, and their shared passion for literature.
Early on in her childhood, Alison came to the realization that her family was different. As individuals,
and as a unit, they were just plain weird. Unlike most young girls, Alison lacked a strong bond with
her parents, most notably her father, Bruce. Because they both display introverted personalities and
had divergent gender identities, Alison and her father never devised a solid relationship. Bruce is
described as possessing generally feminine qualities having passion for fine art and sophisticated
interior design; whereas Alison claims to have become a connoisseur of masculinity at a young age
(95). Neither of them fit their stereotypical role within the family; Bruce didn t act like a macho man
dad, and Alison wasn t playing dress up with all the other little girls. Though their personas seem
compatible, the stark difference in their gender affiliations was a source of great tension between
Alison and her father. Not only does Alison approach herself and her father as inversions of each
other, but she

Effectiveness Of 4 Psychotherapies During The Treatment Of...
Crits christoph et al10 designed a trial to determine the effectiveness of 4 psychotherapies in the
treatment of cocaine dependent patients. In this multicenter study, 487 patients were randomized into
one of the four treatment groups: individual drug counseling (IDC) plus group drug counseling
(GDC), CBT plus GDC, SE plus GDC or GDC alone. Intervention included a 6 month active phase of
treatment and a 3 month booster phase and follow up of 3 months. All treatment groups recorded
significant improvements from baseline mean (SD) 30 days cocaine use of 10.4 (7.8) days (median,
8.0; range, 1 30; n=487) to 3.4 (6.5) days (median, 0; range, 0 30; n = 387) at 12 months. Among the
four groups, IDC plus GDC was superior on the number of cocaine use days and also on the Addiction
Severity Index Drug Use Composite score. The authors noted that despite the low average drug use
found in in the IDC treated patients during the 12 month trial, abstinence was not maintained in most
patients as only 36%achieved 3 consecutive cocaine free months. Discovering an effective
pharmacotherapy for cocaine use disorder remains a top research priority nationally since there are
currently no FDA approved medication for the treatment of cocaine dependence. While several classes
of medications have shown some efficacy in some phase two clinical trials, none has been proven to
show consistency and lasting efficacy. Recent progress in the understanding of the effect of cocaine on

Theropod Dinosaurs Research Paper
Dinosaurs capture the attention of children and adults alike, and many people think that they are long
gone. You might be surprised to find that they are not extinct, but rather perching in your backyard.
The theory that theropods evolved into birds was proposed nearly a century and a half ago and is
supported by more and more modern evidence. You will find that the distinction between birds and
dinosaurs will become difficult, as they have so many parallels. The similarities between birds and
dinosaurs strongly suggest that birds evolved from theropod dinosaurs.
The theory that theropod dinosaurs are the ancestors of modern birds originated after the discovery of
Archeopteryx lithographica in 1861 in Solnhofen, Germany. Thomas Huxley, a strong supporter of

Ratites and penguins are two groups of flightless birds we have today. The origin of flight is an
ongoing debate from scientists, but there are two main theories: that flight evolved arboreally or that it
evolved from ground dwelling dinosaurs. Both have compelling evidence. The theory that flight
started in the trees begins with WAIR (Wing Assisted Incline Running). Discovered in 2001 by Ken
Dial at the University of Montana, it is the way many ground dwelling birds get into trees to rest at
night. These birds would flap their wings back and forth (rather than up and down) to generate
traction. The larger the wing size, the steeper the angle a bird could run up (Holtz 149). Also
supporting this theory is the presence of toes adapted for perching in several species of dinosaurs.
From there, the dinosaurs could have glided from tree to tree and eventually taken flight. A ground
dwelling origin of flight also has convincing evidence. A study found that non avian feathered
theropods could get a boost of speed by flapping their wings (Sloan 51). Therefore, longer feathers
and bigger wings meant faster speeds until flight could

  • 2. The Crucible Compare And Contrast Truman And Oedipus Was nothing real? the question Truma asked after he came to the realization that he was living in a made up world that revolved around him. This moment was similar to the moment when Oedipus became aware that the prophecy had come true, that he killed his father and married his mother. Both Truman and Oedipus went through their lives believing one thing about the world, that they later realized was completely false. Oedipus and Truman go through a similar journey leading up to the revealing of the truth. At first, they both receive hints that lead them to believe things other than the original truths. For Truman, he started noticing that his world was similar to a set and that people knew who he was. For Oedipus, he thought about how Laius ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Golden Age Of Chinese Film Industry During the 1930 s the Chinese Film Industry underwent several improvements in film techniques; improvements in film quality and the advancements in sound quality, which led to this period being called the Golden Age of Chinese film. Some very important directors of the time were Sun Yu, Yonggang Wu and Muzhi Yuan saw the potential to educate the masses through the film Industry. This was done by highlighting the problems in society; such as inequality between the genders. This was done by showcasing the plight and struggles of the lower classes who struggled against society s Confucian morality and values. The main areas that these directors focus upon in their films were social issues, class struggles and urbanisation which can be seen in their films, Daybreak (1933) a film about a traditional rural couple moving to cosmopolitan Shanghai only to be corrupted by the city. The Goddess (1935) follow the life of a mother forced into prostitution and her struggle to put her son through education. She suffers abuse from a Boss but also experiencing the social abuse and stigma attached to her work. Street Angel (1937) which follows a group of friends who help each other in their dire, poor circumstances and stand up against the oppression of being exploited by society. Through these three films, these famous leftist directors educate the nation on the issues of the time. One of the primary issues these films look at are the social problems of the 1930 s; this can be seen in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Demand Estimation Has Been At The Heart Of Many Studies Literature Review Demand estimation has been at the heart of many studies that focus on questions regarding market power, merger and acquisition, research and innovation and valuation of new brands in differentiated products industries. Under the framework of demand estimation, Bresnahan (1987) constructs equilibrium models of oligopoly under product differentiation and studies the competition and collusion in the 1995 price war in the American automobile industry. Gasmi, Laffont and Vuong (1992) study the collusive behavior on price and advertising in the U.S. soft drink market, which is dominated by Coca Cola and Pepsi Cola, after obtaining a full information maximum likelihood estimation of demand functions. Hausman, Leonard and Zona ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Firstly, there would be a large number of parameters to be estimated. For example, in a log log demand system, where logarithms of quantities are linear functions of logarithms of all prices, without additional restrictions, we would have 10,000 parameters if there were 100 differentiated products in the market. The second concern introduced when doing demand estimation for differentiated product is the heterogeneity in consumer tastes. Dixit and Stiglizt (1997) suggest a representative consumer approach to deal with this. They assume that consumer preferences are of the right form so that an average consumer exists; there exists a demand system that lends itself to the level of differentiation observed in the marketplace. However, the required assumptions are strong and empirically false for many applications (Nevo, 2000). The above two problems are addressed by logit demand model (McFadden, 1973). The logit model solves dimensionality problem by projecting the products onto a space of characteristics; in this way, the dimension of the attribute space instead of the square of the number of products becomes the relevant size. However, due to the restrictive way of modeling heterogeneity and the property of independence from irrelevant alternatives (IIA property) in the logit model, substitution pattern between products is driven completely by ... Cada homem enxerga apenas uma parte da verdade, pois tende a hierarquizar aquilo que é absorvido do mundo exterior. I strongly believe that as you write more and more about a character, that they begin to reveal more and more about themselves, from the standpoint that two unintentionally related traits may organically foster another by extension of themselves, in this way the characters are revealing parts of themselves to the author before the author reveals them to the reader. If you are really self conscious of yourself and appearance, and think that plastic surgery is something amazing or magical , then you might think that the idea of being able to become pretty at a certain age is great. On the other hand, if you the idea of being pretty is something that is unrightfully favored or desired, then this novel would be considered a dystopia. I personally hope that in the novel Pretties (the sequel to Uglies), Something happens that will result in Tally not becoming pretty . Tally s character is so different and has such a broad and in depth understanding of the problems that are in her society. Not only because of the lesions, but her vision on certain things would change. Using Shay as an example, she always seemed to have a negative view on the whole pretty transformation, but after the procedure was done to her, she all of the sudden loved the whole pretty lifestyle. She even loved the way she look, which is something I never could have seen Shay doing after having a procedure such as this. One thing that I speculate is that the titles of the novels represent Tally s progression throughout the story. She starts of as as an Ugly , than she becomes pretty , she will later progress to a special (whatever that may mean, maybe working for or with Special Circumstances), and last but not least become an extra . This is just a simple theory with no research to back it up, just a guess. One thing I did notice is that they never actually saw Az s dead body, Maddy simply just said he was taken for the operation and never came back, which means she was not sure what happened exactly. I have a hope that he will actually turn out to be alive in the second novel and we will see an appearance by him. I have no doubt in my mind that David will make a reappearance in the second novel. I am also curious to see whether or not he chooses to accept that Tally was a spy. Personally, I really hope he does because I really enjoyed reading about their connection and I think it added a lot development to each character. Studies in high risk exposal areas of the world potential effects of related amounts of endocrine disruptors at particular times of their developmental statuses can affect the timing of puberty. Endocrine disrupters can be prevented during adolescent time frames by the parents purchasing products of organic processes and keeping away from processed foods, some household chemicals, pesticides, and plastics (Weiner, Lerner, and Easterbrooks, 2012). Low dose exposures have been shown affect the hormonal roles in the body and, especially, in the endocrine system for women, which can expose their uterus to estrogens that can cause breast cancer years later (Vandenberg, 2014). In the clear Orientalism, we can find all the changes that occurred in the Orient. In addition to that, Orientalism presented the Orient to the West in many ways. For years, Orientalism had explained and talked about Orient s texts, mores, traditions, civilizations and cultures and they have been put aside because they are foreigners in Europe s eyes. Section 2: Style, Expertise, Vision: Orientalism s Worldliness. Researchers invented a category called Oriental for the same thing that any eastern individual could face. His agency insures home loans, traditionally for the same low income minority borrowers Mr. Bush wanted to help. When he arrived in June 2005, he was shocked to find those customers had been lured away by the fool s gold of subprime loans. The Ameriquest settlement, he said, reinforced his concern that the industry was exploiting borrowers. In December 2005, Mr. Montgomery drafted a memo and brought it to the White House. I don t think this is what the president had in mind here, he recalled telling Ryan Streeter, then the president s chief housing policy analyst. Falcon ran the Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight, a tiny government agency that oversaw Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, two pillars of the American housing industry. In February 2003, he was finishing a blockbuster report that warned the pillars could crumble. Created by Congress, Fannie and Freddie called G.S.E. s, for government sponsored entities bought trillions of dollars worth of mortgages to hold or sell to investors as guaranteed securities. The companies were also Washington powerhouses, stuffing lawmakers campaign coffers and hiring bare knuckled lobbyists. Mr. Falcon s report outlined a worst case situation in which Fannie and Freddie could default on debt, setting off contagious illiquidity in the market in other words, a financial meltdown. He also raised red flags about the companies soaring use of derivatives, the complex financial instruments that economic experts now blame for spreading the housing collapse. Today, the White House cites that report and its subsequent effort to better regulate Fannie and Freddie as evidence that it foresaw the crisis and tried to avert it. Differences Between Island and Mainland Puerto Ricans Essay Differences Between Island and Mainland Puerto Ricans As many immigrants arrive in the United States of America and begin to call it home , comparisons between such immigrants are certainly inevitable. In particular, the U.S. Hispanic population gives more room for such comparisons since their cultures and traditions are very similar. Most of their similarities stem from a common Spanish heritage. However, there is a lot more to being Hispanic than just speaking Spanish or eating rice and beans. What most people do not understand is that there are also many differences amongst Hispanics and that, most of all, there are many differences between people born and raised in Hispanic countries and people born and raised in the United ... [. . .] By these definitions, Puerto Ricans in Puerto Rico are a nation; Puerto Ricans in New York may still be part of the Puerto Rican nation, depending on who is doing the defining, but in the U.S. mainland they constitute an ethnic group. (12) The fact that island Puerto Ricans see themselves as a nation whereas mainland Puerto Ricans see themselves as a minority and an ethnic group in The United States, gives rise to the main differences that exist between the two. However, in order to delve into deeper comparisons between the ways in which island and mainland Puerto Ricans self identify, it is imperative to understand the historical events that have shaped Puerto Ricans and their heritage. Puerto Rico s association with the United States and its metamorphosis began when in 1898 U.S. troops invaded Puerto Rico during the Spanish American War. Up until that point, Puerto Rico had remained one of Spain s last two colonies in the New World. Puerto Rico s Spanish heritage is seen when Puerto Rican essayist Antonio Pedreira, writing in the 1930 s, termed the first three centuries of Spanish rule a period of faithful prolongation of the Spanish culture (qtd. in Morris 21). Spanish influence is also seen when without rejecting his Puerto Rican Spanishness, the Puerto Rican considered himself a Spaniard from here with ideas and reactions different from those from there (qtd. ... The symptoms of lovesickness are described as the same as cholera, and the conflict of the war mirrors the quarrels of love. Yet when Dr. Juvenal Urbino was determined to marry Fermina, her father and even members of the church approved. Fermina panics when she is plagued by the phantom of guilt and her inability to process her emotions is highlighted (Márquez 204). Her lack of control over her emotions makes her child like, but her need for validation reveals her immaturity. Whenever a mistake occurred like a child Fermina Daza would immediately try to shift blame from herself and onto the nearest scapegoat. Her immaturity caused a dire need to never be seen as at fault. Breaching Social Norm Experiment For my breaching social norm experiment I was determined to do something I would never do even if it was a dare, especially since my ability to interact with strangers is not the best. So, I decided to make people feel uncomfortable by holding their hand. What I would do is walk up to the person from behind and slowly make my way to their hand to make them feel even more uncomfortable. People normally hold hands with their significant other, or with someone they know like a friend or family member, so to be holding hands with a stranger is out of the ordinary and awkward. In preparation to starting our experiment it took my confidant Carla and I about an hour to finally initiate the first move. Before even holding hands with strangers my mind was swirling with multiple questions and thoughts, like Why am I even doing this? , I don t appreciate making people feel uncomfortable. , Why is Mrs.Henry torturing me! , Can I just not do it? , and so on. In addition to my thoughts and questions, I felt myself sweating and my stomach felt as if it was in a twisted knot. Religion and Hate Crimes Essay In 2008, the Uniform Crime Reporting program of the U.S. Department of Justice Federal Bureau of Investigation reported that 13,690 law enforcement agencies submitted hate crime data to the UCR Program. Of these agencies, 2,145 reported 7,783 hate crime incidents involving 9,168 offenses and of the 7,780 single bias incidents reported in 2008, 19.5 percent were motivated by religious bias (1). The statistics of 2008 are alarming to look at because the numbers of hate crimes committed in that year are exceedingly high. These numbers are in the thousands and most of these crimes are coming from states like New York, New Jersey and California (Hate 1). This movement wanted all different groups of people to live in peace and be free of any kind of discrimination. However, it s clear that the civil rights movement did not carry out its goal because many minorities like the Jewish people still suffer many hate crimes. Christianity is the most prevalent religion in the United States. Many people belong to this religion. However, what happens when you don t belong to Christianity? One religion that is not Christianity is the Jewish religion. This religion is one of the most ancient religions that is still very much provident today. However, this religion isn t a respected religion even after the Holocaust and Jewish people continue to be the victims of many hate crimes. Donald Altschiller reinforces this speculation in his book, Hate Crimes: a Reference Handbook, when he states that, anti Semitism has had a pernicious history throughout the ages and around the world and Jewish hatred and violence has always been one of the highest of hate crimes. These attacks are averaging 85 percent at Jewish Americans (16). It s not hard to see that hate crimes against the Jewish is remarkably strong. It is strong enough to lease out a rampage of violent attacks and murder. • 30. `` Fun Home, By Alison Bechdel Part graphic memoir and part psychoanalytical study, Alison Bechdel s, Fun Home, is a charming story about a girl s search for identity within an unconventional family. The novel style autobiography frames Alison s childhood and adolescence as she struggles with themes of sexual confusion, gender identity, and convoluted family dynamics. These ideas are explored through the examination of Alison s relationship with her father, and their shared passion for literature. Early on in her childhood, Alison came to the realization that her family was different. As individuals, and as a unit, they were just plain weird. Unlike most young girls, Alison lacked a strong bond with her parents, most notably her father, Bruce. Because they both display introverted personalities and had divergent gender identities, Alison and her father never devised a solid relationship. Bruce is described as possessing generally feminine qualities having passion for fine art and sophisticated interior design; whereas Alison claims to have become a connoisseur of masculinity at a young age (95). Neither of them fit their stereotypical role within the family; Bruce didn t act like a macho man dad, and Alison wasn t playing dress up with all the other little girls. Though their personas seem compatible, the stark difference in their gender affiliations was a source of great tension between Alison and her father. • 32. Effectiveness Of 4 Psychotherapies During The Treatment Of... Crits christoph et al10 designed a trial to determine the effectiveness of 4 psychotherapies in the treatment of cocaine dependent patients. In this multicenter study, 487 patients were randomized into one of the four treatment groups: individual drug counseling (IDC) plus group drug counseling (GDC), CBT plus GDC, SE plus GDC or GDC alone. Intervention included a 6 month active phase of treatment and a 3 month booster phase and follow up of 3 months. All treatment groups recorded significant improvements from baseline mean (SD) 30 days cocaine use of 10.4 (7.8) days (median, 8.0; range, 1 30; n=487) to 3.4 (6.5) days (median, 0; range, 0 30; n = 387) at 12 months. Among the four groups, IDC plus GDC was superior on the number of cocaine use days and also on the Addiction Severity Index Drug Use Composite score. The authors noted that despite the low average drug use found in in the IDC treated patients during the 12 month trial, abstinence was not maintained in most patients as only 36%achieved 3 consecutive cocaine free months. Discovering an effective pharmacotherapy for cocaine use disorder remains a top research priority nationally since there are currently no FDA approved medication for the treatment of cocaine dependence. You might be surprised to find that they are not extinct, but rather perching in your backyard. The theory that theropods evolved into birds was proposed nearly a century and a half ago and is supported by more and more modern evidence. You will find that the distinction between birds and dinosaurs will become difficult, as they have so many parallels. The similarities between birds and dinosaurs strongly suggest that birds evolved from theropod dinosaurs. The theory that theropod dinosaurs are the ancestors of modern birds originated after the discovery of Archeopteryx lithographica in 1861 in Solnhofen, Germany. Thomas Huxley, a strong supporter of Charles ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Ratites and penguins are two groups of flightless birds we have today. The origin of flight is an ongoing debate from scientists, but there are two main theories: that flight evolved arboreally or that it evolved from ground dwelling dinosaurs. Both have compelling evidence. The theory that flight started in the trees begins with WAIR (Wing Assisted Incline Running). Discovered in 2001 by Ken Dial at the University of Montana, it is the way many ground dwelling birds get into trees to rest at night. These birds would flap their wings back and forth (rather than up and down) to generate traction. The larger the wing size, the steeper the angle a bird could run up (Holtz 149). Also supporting this theory is the presence of toes adapted for perching in several species of dinosaurs. From there, the dinosaurs could have glided from tree to tree and eventually taken flight. A ground dwelling origin of flight also has convincing evidence. A study found that non avian feathered theropods could get a boost of speed by flapping their wings (Sloan 51). Therefore, longer feathers and bigger wings meant faster speeds until flight could ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
