Fair Trade Coffee Offers a Solution to the Coffee Crisis...
Fair Trade Coffee Offers a Solution to the Coffee Crisis
When you buy a cup of coffee in Starbucks every morning to keep you awake through the day, do you
ever think of the origins of these coffee beans? How much of those three dollars you pay in Starbucks
goes to the Farmers? Personally, I m not a coffee drinker. But somehow I realize the big sign in front
of Java City in the Reitz Union Food Court, which says Certified Fair Trade Coffee. I m surprised how
few students know what it means. Currently, farmers in Brazil and Vietnam grow the majority of
coffee beans.
These farmers then sell their beans to the middlemen who pay them low prices an average of $0.3 0.4
per pound. The farmers are earning less or even losing for growing ... Show more content on

As a result, wholesale coffee prices are at their lowest levels in 100 years. Back in 1997, unroasted
coffee beans that had a wholesale price of $2 a pound dipped to under 50 cents a pound in 2002, a
price below many farmers production cost. Since farmers couldn t afford the proper working
conditions, the beans would be grown using the twelve most health threatening types of pesticide.
Furthermore, With low prices, farmers tend to reduce inputs and take less care of the trees. In some
cases this means that it is easier to cut down forest for plantations rather than care for existing ones,
said Néstor Osorio, executive director of the ICO (Roach). The farmers could not afford to improve
organic growing conditions and develop higher quality coffee beans. It directly reduces the range of
quality and varieties of coffee we are obtaining! According to Liam Brody, a program coordinator for
Oxfam America in Boston, the situation was so adverse that hundreds of thousands of coffee farmers
in Africa and Central and South America have lost their jobs as farmland is converted to other
agricultural uses such as livestock grazing or the cultivation of illicit drugs (Roach).
To alleviate the coffee crisis, Fair Trade coffee is the most appropriate action. TransFair is the only
organization in the United States to determine whether or not coffee beans meet fair trade standards an
importer must meet stringent international criteria; paying a minimum price per

Holography Essay
Holography
While working to improve the resolution of an electron microscope, a brilliant man named Dennis
Gabor had developed a theory on Holography. This dates back to the year of 1947. Dennis Gabor is a
British/Hungarian scientist who created the word Holography from Greek terms. He used the word
holos, meaning whole, and gramma, meaning message. Gabor characterized his work as an
experiment in serendipity that was begun too soon. The next decade brought about frustration in
Holography because light sources available at the time were not coherent. In 1960 a breakthrough
came forth. The invention of the laser had pure and intense light that was well suited for the making of
holograms. Emmett Leith and Juris Upatnieks ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The staple of holographic methodology is the basic of the off axis technique. The creation of a
hologram is quite extensive. A beam of laser light is visually separated into two beams. One, the
reference beam, is directed toward a piece of holographic film and expanded (its diameter increased)
so that the light covers the film evenly and completely. The second (object) beam is directed at the
subject of the composition and similarly expanded to illuminate it (Vacca, 16). The object beam
carries information about the location, size, shape, and the texture of the subject when the object beam
reflects off of it. Some of this reflected object beam then meets the reference beam at the holographic
film, producing an interference pattern which is recorded in the light sensitive emulsion (Vacca, 16).
The hologram is illuminated at the same angle as the reference beam during the original exposure to
reveal the 3 D image after the film is developed.
Another great experiment that occurred in 1962 was by Dr. Uri N. Denisyuk of the U.S.S.R. He
combined Holography with natural color photography. Natural color photography was created by
Nobel Laureate Gabriel Lippman in 1908. Denisyuk s approach produced a white light reflection
hologram that could be viewed in light from an ordinary incandescent light bulb.
Dr. T.H. Maimam of the Hughes Aircraft Corporation developed the pulsed ruby laser in 1960. This

Comparison Of Nicolo Machiavelli s The Prince And Sun Tzu
Nicolo Machiavelli s The Prince and Sun Tzu s The Art of War both both provide directions for
leadership with similar goals. The Prince is primarily geared towards providing valuable information
about how a ruler of many principalities may govern different populations and acquire new lands. The
Art of War provides us with a schematic of the optimal path to victory. This book is instead directed
towards generals of powerful militaries with only the goal of winning. Concepts such as Machiavelli s
view of destruction will be contrasted with Sun Tzu s victory oriented argument for taking whole and
several of their other ideas will be compared. Although Machiavelli and Sun Tzu have different
intended audiences, many of their ancient tactics can ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Destruction will continue to be significantly inferior to the strategy laid out by Sun Tzu. This strategy
of taking whole could clearly be applied to everyday life as well. A businessman would likely prefer to
acquire a competing company, persuade its valuable employees to stay, and utilize the entirety of its
assets, especially information, rather than buy it out, only to dissolve it and gain nothing but one less
competitor on the market.
Sun Tzu and Machiavelli have similar views on preparation before battle. Both believe that
appropriate preparation ultimately causes victory to lean in the favor of those with little reliance on
circumstance. Machiavelli stated that rulers maintain themselves better if they owe little to luck.
Leaders prepared for battle will not falter under the weight of pressure unlike opposition who rely on a
specific circumstances for their strategy to be effective. Sun Tzu practically implies that the same
exact tactic be used by generals of armies. He says, Therefore, the victorious military is first victorious
and after that does battle. The defeated military first does battle and after that seeks victory. Sun Tzu s
statement seems to provide a more precise strategy which is clearly tailored more towards a military
interested in winning battles rather than a ruler governing a principality. Sun Tzu s directions are all

The Positive Connotation In Thou Blind Man s Mark
For many people, the word desire carries a positive connotation, bringing to mind dreams of things
that could be. In Sir Philip Sidney s poem Thou Blind Man s Mark, however, desire is characterized
not as a wistful thing, but as a dangerous compulsion that must be stopped. Through Sidney s
extensive use of figurative language and repetition, it is made clear that the speaker clearly despises
desire due to the horrible things desire can lead to. This expresses the idea that people must look
inside themselves to gain true happiness rather than desiring for things that can never be. The speaker
s negative attitude toward desire is established early on in the poem as the speaker compares desire to
many dreadful things in an almost ironic way. Desire is first described as a blind man s mark, which
creates a dark irony and sets the negative tone for the rest of the poem (1). A blind man would not be
able to see his target, so therefore he would not be able to clearly aim at the target. Rather, he must
shoot blindly and hope to hit the mark, which is what desire causes people to do. Desire can also be
seen as a fool s self chosen snare, implying that those who desire are foolish because they chose to fall
into the trap of desire rather than attempting to avoid it (1). These metaphors begin to characterize
desire as foolish and something that one cannot control. The metaphors in the next line set up the
speakers personal view on desire, as a fond fancy scum and dregs

Descriptive Essay About My Best Day
It was a cloudy morning, darkened gray smudges of wool surrounded the sky, the rain was showering
the school, and the air had soothing coldness of the breeze.
I had P.E. in my first hour. My classmates and I were not very thrilled to start Friday s morning this
way. We thought that the weather would ruin our weekend s plans as if it was disastrous. Apparently,
the gloom of the morning was reflected in our mood.
Our teacher walked in with a towel surrounding her neck since she got half drowned from the rain and
said sarcastically, Listen to me all of you, since we are having a lovely weather today, we are not
going to have any outside activities obviously. So, you can play badminton, basketball and you are
allowed to try the balance beam to whom have climbed and tried it previously. Enjoy our blessed
Friday. After that, she went back to her office to change her wet clothes. She never liked us in the first
place and neither did we.
I was extremely excited to play badminton with my friends because it had been a long time since I had
the chance to play it. When I went to ask my friends to join me, they were excited to do something
otherwise.
They wanted to climb on the balance beam which was located in the gymnastics section of the gym. I
thought it was a terrible idea and I did not want to do it; however, they kept insisting on me to come so
they grabbed my arm and went along with them.
As I entered the gymnastics section, I noticed gymnastic equipment were filling the

What Is The Theme Of Her First Ball
Katherine Mansfield s short story Her First Ball introduces us to Leila, a country girl on her way to
her first ball with her cousins, the Sheridan sisters. A range of language features convey Leila s
attitude of naive and excitement as the ball begins, and her transition to a young woman who is more
socially experienced and mature by the end of the story. The story conveys the message that loss of
innocence is an inevitable and vital part of the transition from adolescence to adulthood.
At the beginning of the story, Leila s attitude towards the ball is one of exuberance as she has ever
experienced anything like it before. Mansfield uses language features such as similes, personification
and metaphors to emphasize Leila s breathless excitement ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The text starts off with a giddy tone that accentuates Leila s excitement for the ball Exactly when the
ball began Leila would have found it hard to say. this gives a sense that Leila has lost track of reality,
from being whisked away by the glamour and grandiose of the ball when she first enters the hall.
Around the middle of the text the tone transitions from giddy and cheerful to a more depressing tone
when Leila encounters the fat man. This is shown by the quote It hardly bears thinking about, does it?
said the fat man gloomily. Leila looked at his bald head, and she felt quite sorry for him. Which shows
us the change in tone when Leila meets the fat man. Leila s time with the fat men is characterised by
her being pulled away from the fantasy of the ball and back to reality as she gets shocked by the fat
man s realist/pessimist view. After Leila s encounter with the fat man ends the tone of the text changes
back to cheerful and exuberant with the quote The lights, the azaleas, the dresses, the pink faces, the
velvet chairs, all became one beautiful flying wheel. this shows us that immediately after the fat man
leaves the ball goes back to normal and Leila forgets him and carries on with her youthful fantasy
version of the ball. The changes in the tone of the text shows how adolescents live in the moment and
tend to easily pass things

Have you ever found yourself wondering where your money has gone, or nor remembering what you

cash budget helps businesses estimate their incoming monthly income, and how much their monthly
expenses will be. The preparation of a monthly cash budget allows companies to be better prepared
when it comes to their business cash flow and taxes. If a company is in the market to borrow money or
obtaining financing, the bank requires pro forma financial statements, specifically the balance sheet

LECTURE 2 TERM STRUCTURE OF INTEREST RATES
YTM AND HPR
Yield to maturity (YTM) reflects the return required and set by the market on the assumption that the
bond is held to maturity. In equilibrium, it is also the return that investors can expect to earn over the
life of the bond. Holding Period Return (HPR) is the expected return over a future period, and is not
based on the assumption that the bond is held to maturity. SIMILARITIES    Both expressed as
annualised returns (not effective rates) Use the settlement price as cost base Total returns accounting
for both the coupon interest component and the capital gain/loss component
DIFFERENCES    YTM is observed and set by the market, HRP is not YTM assumes that
coupon interests are all invested at the same rate as quoted YTM, HPR allows for different
reinvestment interest rates received at different times YTM assumes that bond is held to maturity,
HPR assumes that bond is to be sold before maturity
CALCULATING HPR HRP is used for comparing the expected return among alternate investments
over the same predetermined holding period. However, to accomplish this task, future interest rates for
different lengths are required.

Trench Warfare In The Trenches
During World War I most of the fighting was done on land where it was solider versus solider and the
one who could withstand the pressure of the trenches the longest would win. Trench warfare was
completely accidental and the fighting was supposed to go as quick as possible where your troops
would be in and out then they could all go home; what ended up happening was one of the world s
longest stalemates where both sides dug in their boots and held their ground for as long as they could.
However many things changed trench warfare such as: no man s land, tanks, machine guns, gas,
grenades, and shelling. There were horrors far worse than the ones seen in the trenches though,
because between the trenches the lined there land and the enemies was a place known as no man s
land. No man s land was the stretch of land between one sides trenches and the others. This land is
described as the worst place to be if you were in the war. No man s land was full of dead bodies from
both sides as neither side was able to reach the bodies of their men; so there bodies just laid there
rotting and decomposing because no one was able to get their ... Show more content on

Machine guns were the first of their kind and were highly revolutionary; they were first used by the
Germans where they would line the trenches. Machine guns were operated by two people a gunner
and someone who would feed the bullets into the machine gun so it didn t stop firing. It was used to
repel soldiers that were pushing at their trenches and it could mow down a whole wave of infantry that
was pushing at you in seconds it was brutally efficient and soon every side in the war needed to have
one because it was the beat at mowing down troops. Machine guns made the stalemate last much
longer as eventually all sides had them and pushing would likely result in death for your side so
pushing the enemy line became far less

and although she spoke in an upbeat manner, her responses could sometimes sound impersonal and

Airport Security After September 11, 2001
September 11, 2001 is a date that will never be forgotten by Americans. On the morning of September
11, nineteen terrorists hijacked four airlines and killed 2996 people. Prior to this horrible day, security
was not a priority in airports. Terrorist have made transportation a main point of attack because it
plays such an important role in our economy. After the terrorist attacks, the airline industry made great
improvements. It is important for airline security to have tight regulations to ensure safety to all
passengers.
Before September 11, it was nearly impossible to detect the threats of the passengers. These threats
often include guns, knives, bombs and pathogens. There were few regulations to passenger
background checks. Each security check was done by private companies as opposed to the
Transportation Security Administration. Passengers were not patted down and did not remove their

made major changes to reinforce the safety of this nation. President Bush provided twenty billion
dollars to upgrade airline security. On November 19, 2001 Congress made the Aviation and
Transportation Security Act (ATSA). The ATSA made the Transportation Security Administration

Best Buy Co. is a multinational retailer of consumer electronics, home office products, entertainment
products and related services 1. The group is the largest U.S consumer electronics retailer by revenue.
In 2006, Best Buy made its first steps in China with the acquisition of a Jiangsu Five Star, a Chinese
retailer and opened its first Chinese store under its name in Shanghai, soon followed by eight others.
With a consumer focused strategy, Best Buy was hoping to capture part of the electronics retailing

The company is now having problems competing with online retailers. Amazon s example speaks for
itself since its brand increased by 32% in 2011 while Best Buy declined by 11%.6
Whilst Best Buy is now the largest electronics retailer in the US, Amazon has seen its revenues grow
at a much faster rate and is expected to take the number one position by 2012. Best Buy s net income
is down
30% to 154 million for 2011 fiscal year.7 The company s CEO, Brian Dunn, has recently resigned
because of inappropriate personal conduct allegations. Best Buy s stock price continues to set new 52
week lows.
In order to improve its situation, the company plans to reduce store locations and sizes.8
Moreover, Best Buy is struggling with an excess of overhead costs because it is a brick and mortar
retailer and therefore it has large operational costs to run and maintain its locations. There are a lot of
factors that contribute to the overhead costs. In addition to paying rent for the leased locations, Best
Buy also incurs real estate taxes, insurance, and area maintenance fees, which the company has to
incur to stock products on its sleeves. These overhead costs have to be reflected in the price of the
products offered, thus preventing Best Buy to compete on price alone with online retailers.
Finally, another current and important disadvantage for Best Buy is

In 1998, Congress passed the IRS Reconstructing and Reform Act after hearings held by Congress in

interest group. An example of this kind of relationship is of the NRA and how they can lobby to block
new gun control measures. This can become an iron triangle issue if politicians respond to the NRA
lobbyists and block an initiative such as universal background checks, even if the initiative is

Murder In The Tell-Tale Heart By Edgar Allan Poe
Ever wonder how you d feel after killing someone? Well the Narrator of The Tell Tale Heart commits
a crime thinking it would all be okay, since he buries the evidence, but will he be okay? The narrator,
the murderer, acts perfectly calm and okay when the cops show up, because of course the evidence is
gone, but is it? He had no reason to seek revenge, he killed this man because of the man s evil eye.
After killing the man he doesn t have to worry about the evil eye staring at him. He says in the story
His eye would trouble me no more. (Poe 93) He say this after killing the man. So, the man s heart is
dead, so is the evil eye that scares him so much. The murdered ends up taking responsibility for his
actions at the end of the story. He

John Steinbeck s The Red Pony
John Steinbeck, known for his many meaningful works, was a prominent American writer born in
Salinas, California. His parents were Olive Hamilton and John Ernst Steinbeck Sr. He had three

Steinbeck and Mary would read the Arthur tales, and recreate them in plays (Benson 21). When he
was four, he was given a pony, which he named Jill, that later became his inspiration for his book

Bias In Health Care
The most important piece of information that I learned is that the description of bias in research is, a
deviation from the true results and there is almost no way to avoid it. Bias happens when there is an
underlying factor continuously deforms the new findings of a study (EVIDENCE BASED
PRACTICE: What is bias in health research?, 2009).
Even in a study done by incorporating as much randomness as possible, there is bound to be some
bias. Random bias would always be present, as human beings aren t omnipotent with the ability to
control everything. In a method, that is as much protected from bias as possible, like a triple blind
study, where the experimenter, test subjects, and the monitoring committee are oblivious to each other,

Comparing The Lone Ranger And Tonto Fist
In Jacqueline L. McGrath s article, she mainly evaluates Sherman Alexie s attempt to negotiate the
traditions and innovations that are seemingly incompatible in her fiction, The Lone Ranger and Tonto
Fistfight in Heaven. More specifically, McGrath challenges the notion that Sherman Alexie s fiction
can be considered as a folklore. She argues that the work is not folklore, as it is widely considered
among other folklorists;instead, the fiction is a body of work that is much more complicated, which
transcends the confines of folklore and Native American oral tradition. Moreover, McGrath also
debuts the notion that Native American writing is more oral than other texts, since text is just a
medium for representing parts of an oral traditional

Bob Taasco Ford Mustang
Bob Tasca knows his stuff and time and again he has proved just how much he does. His work has
been noticed and has earned him praise and appreciation from his peers as well as car enthusiasts all
over the world. His exemplary work on the Thunderbolt drag racers put him on the forefront when it
comes to designers and when the time came; he was called in to put in some work for the Ford
Mustang. Plans to redesign the Mustang for the 1967 and 1968 model years brought about a powerful
machine with the 335 horsepower FE Thunderbird engine fitted under the hood. The thing with Tasca
is that he goes all the way and holds nothing back. He felt that more could be done and more he did, in
fact lightening the package with the installation of the 428 cubic inch FE big block thanks to John
Healey under the hood. The accomplishment of the lightweight design of the Mustang drew attention
to Tasca from Ford who then invited him out to build 50 of the same kind using the 428 cubic engines
effectively being named the Cobra Jet. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Attack By Yasmina Khadra
There is no denying that violence can impact a person in harmful ways, however, that is not always
the case. In Yasmina Khadra s The Attack, characters experience different kinds of violence, but its
impact can be positive. The attack that Amin Jaafari s wife, Sihem, executed allowed him to learn
many life lessons and gave him the ability to see things in a new perspective. Also, the violent attacks
that occur in Amin s country make public service workers essential to helping the community.
Furthermore, violence in society encourages people to fight for their beliefs. Thus, the violent acts that
happen to people can impact them in such ways that they discover their purpose in life.

Jung-Typology Personality Assessment
Reflection on the Jung Typology Personality Assessment and DISC Leadership Assessment
While both the Jung Typology and the DISC s assessment varies, mostly the characteristics it read
were seemingly similar. Both tests seem to find my personality to be more introverted and cautious
than extroverted and daring. I believe that these tests are mostly accurate, but have some flaws
intertwined within.
Through the Jung Typology assessment, my results were not surprising and mostly accurate. My
results came back as ISFJ, meaning I am more introverted than extroverted, more sensing than
intuitive, more feeling than sensing, and more judging than perceiving. D. Kiersey mentions that ISFJ

The DISC assessment, similar to the Jung Typology, I felt was not as accurate and I found more to
disagree with. The DISC was more in depth, I thought. The DISC said that I was less decisive,
moderately interactive, highly stable, and extremely cautious. Once again the DISC assessment also
said I would prefer a stable work environment, and I still disagree with that one.
However, I believe it was spot on when it says that I like to analyze a situation before I act on a
decision and I am normally the quiet person in a heated debate. In the interactive category, I was
almost directly in the middle. However, the only true thing in this category is the fact that I prefer to
work alone, the rest were close, but I felt that they were not as explicit at the Jung
Typology. For the stability category, I had a pretty high score, which was not very surprising to me.
This category was pretty accurate, saying that I am patient with a wide variety of people and that I m
not great at letting things go. The cautious category was the highest score (99). This was almost 100%
accurate based on my personality. The only flaw I found was that it said I have

Tar Sands, By Jon Brownell
Tar Sands Essay Jon Brownell The Alberta Tar Sands are large deposits of bitumen,a sticky, black and
viscous semi solid form of petroleum.(Merriam Webster) The bitumen is extracted from the earth and
separated from materials that are not petroleum. This process consumes both water from the
Athabasca River drainage basin and energy. While emissions from the water used are low the airborne
pollutants contain more than 350 kilograms of cancer causing chemicals every four months.(Kelly)
Also, bitumen is one of the least efficient power sources in the world.(Rapier) The Tar Sands are
dangerous for people to live near, are environmentally damaging and unsustainable and are an
inefficient source of power compared to other sources available in Canada. While the Tar Sands are
currently good for the canadian economy, in the long term they will cost us more than they make. The
content of cancer causing chemicals like PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) is twice as high as
the standard recommended by the national oceanic and atmospheric administration in the United
States. These levels have been observed to cause liver cancer in fish. (Timoney 68) Fish from Lake
Athabasca have been found with deformities other than liver cancer, like lumps or bumps. Cancer
levels in people who live in Fort Chipewyan are much higher than in other parts of the country.

No Exit Existentialism
The drama, No Exit by Jean Paul Sartre, is about three characters, who made ruthless decisions during
their time on earth and are now left in hell to torture one another. The anecdote s setting takes place in
hell, where the three characters reveal their horrendous crimes which led to their eternal suffering at
the hands of one another. The drama portrays existentialism, which is the idea that the existence of an
individual as being free and responsible in determining their own choices whose consequences they
must face.
A particular scene from the drama, which defines existentialism effectively is, when Estelle was
seeking a mirror. Upon not finding one, Inez volunteered to be her personal mirror. Repeatedly, Inez
kept on flirting with Estelle, who in return wanted Garcin s affection. Meanwhile, Estelle explained
that she had six mirrors in her bedroom that she constantly needed to look at to remind herself of her
existence. Finally, Estelle allowed Inez to be her mirror. Inez teased Estelle, who worried if they

widely criticized and considered unconstitutional. However, Stop and Frisk, per se is not
unconstitutional unless people are being stopped illegally. It s a crime prevention tactic that allows
police officers to stop a person based on reasonable suspicion of criminal activity and conduct a frisk

According to the NYPD s own report around nine out of ten stopped and frisked New Yorkers have

The climate models are deficient in simulating the seasonal cycle of the ocean ML. Some models in

the CMIP5 multi model mean shows a fairly good representation of the spatial distribution of annual

only to the eastern equatorial Pacific and the Atlantic Ocean . Though, the CMIP5 models simulate

Changing A Company s Culture
Changing a Company s Culture
When it comes to corporate culture, there would be no better example than Apple Computer as how
change can take place based on the leadership of a single individual. This would be no other than
Steven Paul Jobs, better known to the world of Steve Jobs. Mr. Jobs was worth slightly over million
dollars at the age of 23. By the time he was 24 years old he was worth just over $10 million and by the
time he reached the age of 25 was worth well over $100 million dollars. A staggering difference in just
a three year period (Denning, 2011).
In the interview that was given to Robert Cringely in 1995 for a show that was going to air on the
Public Broadcasting System (PBS) entitled Triumph of the Nerds (Denning, 2011) Steve Jobs tells
how he created the culture at Apple from being different than the status quo. He speaks at length about
costs and how the accountants would never seem to see eye to eye with him when it came to cost.
What Jobs found along the way was that is just the way things were always done in the past but other
institutions and that was not going to be the case at Apple Computer. He knew he could do better and
change the way people would think even when it came to the accounting department at Apple (Jobs,
Cringely, Sen, 1995).
At the time the interview was given Steve Jobs was no longer working for Apple even though he was
its founder he had resigned from the company 10 years prior and many things have changed for the
worse at Apple

In the first of the two scenes we witness the introduction of Cole and Dr Crowe in what appears to be
a pre arranged visit. A vital part of convincing the audience of his existence is in creating the illusion
of interaction between himself and others and in the opening of the scene, the body language of Cole s
mother and Dr Crowe is used to suggest this. In medium shot, (often used to provide a ?blank sheet?
for emotions), we see the two characters in profile. While Dr Crowe is calm and smiling slightly, Cole
s mother holds her body angled away from him and has a tight, cold expression, giving a definite
impression of tension. From this it appears that a conversation and more probably a disagreement has
taken place between them, as a ghost he would be unable to do this, the audience would have no
reason to suspect him at this point. The tension also allows us to presume that she looks away from
him in order to avoid his gaze, rather than as a result of his invisibility. However, both here and when

How Did Donatello Tell The Story Of The Annunciation
In your own words, explain how Donatello has told the story of The Annunciation in sculpture and
why contemporaries were so impressed with his achievement.
Donatello is considered to be one of the most influential artists of the 15th century. A
member of the innovative group of painters, architects and sculptors that revolutionised art in
Florence at the beginning of the 15th century, he succeeded in becoming perhaps the most successful
in his field due to his understanding of the aspects of classical sculpture and the creative and
emotive way in which he adapted them to his own works. In particular, his reliefs surpassed all

[3] The artist s eagerness to produce something as thoroughly all antica as possible, is evidently
responsible for the poor taste of this mixture of decorative features borrowed from various
monuments
The story of the Annunciation is one that focuses on the centuries long Islamic perspective of
judgement and expectation of others, especially women. Set during a period of time where the
sacred nature of a woman s purity was highly valued, the angel Gabriel s message to the Virgin
Mary was not one entirely void of danger and aprehension. An unwed mother would undoubtedly
be persecuted by her peers and this is the danger that Mary faced with the deliverance of the news.
Donatello s job was to not only create a skilled and beautiful piece of art but also to depict the
varying emotions of the scene in such a way as to convey to his audience the true story of the
Annunciation in all it s different aspects.
The placement of the figure of the Virgin is especially successful in displaying a sense of shock on
her part. Frightened by the appearance of the angel, she has delicately turned her body away from
him to the left while her right arm covers her left breast in surprise. He left arm hangs lower as she

Total receiving overheads
Total number of receipts £900,000

£1,097.56 per receipt
Using this rate as a constant allows us to evaluate the product overhead apportionments: overheads per
receipt x receipts per product group
For product A:
£1,097.56 per receipt x 50 receipts
£54,878
Product A B C
Receiving overheads apportionment £54,787.0 £76,829.3 £768,292.7
We then divide these product apportionments by the number of units made for each product, to derive
the cost per unit for receiving goods. The calculations here give the following results:
Product A B C
Receiving cost per unit £0.60976 £2.5610 £51.2195
Notice, when compared with Drury s method of using the overhead rate as a percentage of direct
materials cost, the version presented here gives a radically different result. Had we applied Drury s
method, the product receiving cost per unit would have been:
Overhead absorption rate:
£900,000 x 100 = 21.82%
= £4,125,000
Applying this rate to each product s material costs gives:

The method we have used applies the full spirit of ABC by identifying and using fully the ABC
approach. The other overhead rate, the Machine Hour Rate, is £3.79. This is calculated by dividing the
total other overheads by the number of machine hours applied, or worked. In

Essay on Failed Relationships
We live our lives waiting for who we think is the perfect person, but in reality that never happens.
When we hear the word relationship, we think of a man and a woman. Being in a relationship is more
than just being intimate. There are different kinds of relationship such as husbands and wives, parent
and child, or just friend to friend. Some people say it takes two people to make a relationship fail.
When two people meet, they usually know from the begining if they want to be with that person or if
they want to pursue a relationship.
When a relationship fails, it is because one or both parties involved gives up. Giving up on a

Some people cheat with the hope of never being caught. Another reason why relationships fail are
because of children, some people having children will help in reality it only makes worse. On the
other hand, if a person may bring their child or children into the relationship, and the child and the
other partner does not get along that usually cause a big problem.
Communication is the number one key to a good relationship. When there is no communication
between both parties involved in the relationship, that is when the relationship fails whether it is a man
and a woman, or a child trying to divorce his/her parents or friends cutting their ties forever.
When couples realize their relationship is starting to fail, they will try different things such as
marriage counseling. That is when the couple will sit down with a therapist and they will try to work
their problems out. Sometimes therapy can help the couples work their issues out and get to the root of
their problems. Another solution is a vacation or a second honeymoon where they can reconcile or
rekindle the relationship that they use to have. Or even as far as moving away to get a new start on
life, to try to get away from the old way of how things use to be and try to start a new life together

Advertisement Success and the Use of Ethos, Logos, and Pathos
The main purpose of commercials and advertisements is to persuade the viewer to purchase the
product that is advertised, but not all commercials are successful in this endeavor. Companies, such as
Budweiser and Kleenex, appeal to the viewers ethos, logos, and pathos in order to influence them to
buy the advertised product(s). In order to appeal to each of the categories, companies use different
tactics to catch viewers attention. The use of ethos, logos, and pathos can make or break an
advertisement based on how it is being used.
Budweiser first released its Lost Dog commercial during Super Bowl XLIX (49). The advertisement
centers itself around a small dog who, out of curiosity, enters a truck trailer without the knowledge of
his owner. The dog then attempts to find its way back home but encounters an obstacle that it cannot
overcome a hungry wolf. When all hope seems lost, the dog s best friends, the Budweiser trademarked
Clydesdale horses, come to save him. The dog and horses all make it back home to their owner at the
end of the advertisement.
The commercial appeals to the audience s pathos more than anything. Animals, especially dogs, have
a way of pulling with human heartstrings. ...they can be used to transfer desired meanings to the
products with which they are associated (Phillips 1). In other words, using animals in advertisements
can link advertised products to the feelings that are associated

own to turn the tides of war. Heartbreak Ridge was three main hilltops Hill 894 to the south, Hill 931
in the center and to the north was Hill 851. These three hills were the main focus for the Second
Infantry Division, to push the North Korean further past the 38th parallel. There were three main
infantry regiments the 9th Infantry Regiment, the 23rd Infantry Regiment, and finally the 38th
Infantry Regiment. These three Regiments would fight ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
They also destroyed the Salphou Mines were the North Koreans were using as housing their
replacements and supplies. This provided as a key item to destroy. Infantry moves forward to the
attack with spirit and confidence and a more marked willingness to give em hell when tanks are
moving with them. If enemy tanks appear they do not have the effect of slowing an advance. Friendly
tanks take them on, and the advance can go on to the swift conclusion desired. Enemy emplacements,
pillboxes, and bunkers are quickly neutralized by powerful tank guns, when troops in such instances
might otherwise be pinned down. (Hinshaw, Heartbreak Ridge, pg. 113). With this showed that the
infantry had more fight in them with the assistance from the tanks. The 38th regiment moved too their
objectives and met a stiff defense on their first attack and had to withdraw from their first attack. But
they continued to fight and push through their objectives. They kept pushing to gain their objectives.
They would soon accomplish their

Fair Trade Coffee Offers a Solution to the Coffee Crisis When you buy a cup of coffee in Starbucks every morning to keep you awake through the day, do you ever think of the origins of these coffee beans? The farmers are earning less or even losing for growing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As a result, wholesale coffee prices are at their lowest levels in 100 years. Back in 1997, unroasted coffee beans that had a wholesale price of $2 a pound dipped to under 50 cents a pound in 2002, a price below many farmers production cost. Since farmers couldn t afford the proper working conditions, the beans would be grown using the twelve most health threatening types of pesticide. Furthermore, With low prices, farmers tend to reduce inputs and take less care of the trees. In some cases this means that it is easier to cut down forest for plantations rather than care for existing ones, said Néstor Osorio, executive director of the ICO (Roach). The farmers could not afford to improve organic growing conditions and develop higher quality coffee beans. It directly reduces the range of quality and varieties of coffee we are obtaining! According to Liam Brody, a program coordinator for Oxfam America in Boston, the situation was so adverse that hundreds of thousands of coffee farmers in Africa and Central and South America have lost their jobs as farmland is converted to other agricultural uses such as livestock grazing or the cultivation of illicit drugs (Roach). To alleviate the coffee crisis, Fair Trade coffee is the most appropriate action. TransFair is the only organization in the United States to determine whether or not coffee beans meet fair trade standards an importer must meet stringent international criteria; paying a minimum price per ... This dates back to the year of 1947. Dennis Gabor is a British/Hungarian scientist who created the word Holography from Greek terms. He used the word holos, meaning whole, and gramma, meaning message. Gabor characterized his work as an experiment in serendipity that was begun too soon. The next decade brought about frustration in Holography because light sources available at the time were not coherent. In 1960 a breakthrough came forth. The staple of holographic methodology is the basic of the off axis technique. The creation of a hologram is quite extensive. A beam of laser light is visually separated into two beams. One, the reference beam, is directed toward a piece of holographic film and expanded (its diameter increased) so that the light covers the film evenly and completely. The second (object) beam is directed at the subject of the composition and similarly expanded to illuminate it (Vacca, 16). The object beam carries information about the location, size, shape, and the texture of the subject when the object beam reflects off of it. Some of this reflected object beam then meets the reference beam at the holographic film, producing an interference pattern which is recorded in the light sensitive emulsion (Vacca, 16). The hologram is illuminated at the same angle as the reference beam during the original exposure to reveal the 3 D image after the film is developed. Another great experiment that occurred in 1962 was by Dr. Uri N. Denisyuk of the U.S.S.R. He combined Holography with natural color photography. Natural color photography was created by Nobel Laureate Gabriel Lippman in 1908. Denisyuk s approach produced a white light reflection hologram that could be viewed in light from an ordinary incandescent light bulb. Dr. T.H. The Prince is primarily geared towards providing valuable information about how a ruler of many principalities may govern different populations and acquire new lands. The Art of War provides us with a schematic of the optimal path to victory. This book is instead directed towards generals of powerful militaries with only the goal of winning. Destruction will continue to be significantly inferior to the strategy laid out by Sun Tzu. This strategy of taking whole could clearly be applied to everyday life as well. A businessman would likely prefer to acquire a competing company, persuade its valuable employees to stay, and utilize the entirety of its assets, especially information, rather than buy it out, only to dissolve it and gain nothing but one less competitor on the market. Sun Tzu and Machiavelli have similar views on preparation before battle. Both believe that appropriate preparation ultimately causes victory to lean in the favor of those with little reliance on circumstance. Machiavelli stated that rulers maintain themselves better if they owe little to luck. Leaders prepared for battle will not falter under the weight of pressure unlike opposition who rely on a specific circumstances for their strategy to be effective. Sun Tzu practically implies that the same exact tactic be used by generals of armies. He says, Therefore, the victorious military is first victorious and after that does battle. • 6. The Positive Connotation In Thou Blind Man s Mark For many people, the word desire carries a positive connotation, bringing to mind dreams of things that could be. In Sir Philip Sidney s poem Thou Blind Man s Mark, however, desire is characterized not as a wistful thing, but as a dangerous compulsion that must be stopped. Through Sidney s extensive use of figurative language and repetition, it is made clear that the speaker clearly despises desire due to the horrible things desire can lead to. This expresses the idea that people must look inside themselves to gain true happiness rather than desiring for things that can never be. The speaker s negative attitude toward desire is established early on in the poem as the speaker compares desire to many dreadful things in an almost ironic way. Desire is first described as a blind man s mark, which creates a dark irony and sets the negative tone for the rest of the poem (1). A blind man would not be able to see his target, so therefore he would not be able to clearly aim at the target. Rather, he must shoot blindly and hope to hit the mark, which is what desire causes people to do. Desire can also be seen as a fool s self chosen snare, implying that those who desire are foolish because they chose to fall into the trap of desire rather than attempting to avoid it (1). These metaphors begin to characterize desire as foolish and something that one cannot control. The metaphors in the next line set up the speakers personal view on desire, as a fond fancy scum and dregs ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Descriptive Essay About My Best Day It was a cloudy morning, darkened gray smudges of wool surrounded the sky, the rain was showering the school, and the air had soothing coldness of the breeze. I had P.E. in my first hour. My classmates and I were not very thrilled to start Friday s morning this way. We thought that the weather would ruin our weekend s plans as if it was disastrous. Apparently, the gloom of the morning was reflected in our mood. Our teacher walked in with a towel surrounding her neck since she got half drowned from the rain and said sarcastically, Listen to me all of you, since we are having a lovely weather today, we are not going to have any outside activities obviously. So, you can play badminton, basketball and you are allowed to try the balance beam to whom have climbed and tried it previously. Enjoy our blessed Friday. After that, she went back to her office to change her wet clothes. She never liked us in the first place and neither did we. I was extremely excited to play badminton with my friends because it had been a long time since I had the chance to play it. When I went to ask my friends to join me, they were excited to do something otherwise. They wanted to climb on the balance beam which was located in the gymnastics section of the gym. A range of language features convey Leila s attitude of naive and excitement as the ball begins, and her transition to a young woman who is more socially experienced and mature by the end of the story. The story conveys the message that loss of innocence is an inevitable and vital part of the transition from adolescence to adulthood. At the beginning of the story, Leila s attitude towards the ball is one of exuberance as she has ever experienced anything like it before. The text starts off with a giddy tone that accentuates Leila s excitement for the ball Exactly when the ball began Leila would have found it hard to say. this gives a sense that Leila has lost track of reality, from being whisked away by the glamour and grandiose of the ball when she first enters the hall. Around the middle of the text the tone transitions from giddy and cheerful to a more depressing tone when Leila encounters the fat man. This is shown by the quote It hardly bears thinking about, does it? said the fat man gloomily. Leila looked at his bald head, and she felt quite sorry for him. Which shows us the change in tone when Leila meets the fat man. Leila s time with the fat men is characterised by her being pulled away from the fantasy of the ball and back to reality as she gets shocked by the fat man s realist/pessimist view. After Leila s encounter with the fat man ends the tone of the text changes back to cheerful and exuberant with the quote The lights, the azaleas, the dresses, the pink faces, the velvet chairs, all became one beautiful flying wheel. this shows us that immediately after the fat man leaves the ball goes back to normal and Leila forgets him and carries on with her youthful fantasy version of the ball. However many things changed trench warfare such as: no man s land, tanks, machine guns, gas, grenades, and shelling. There were horrors far worse than the ones seen in the trenches though, because between the trenches the lined there land and the enemies was a place known as no man s land. Jung-Typology Personality Assessment Reflection on the Jung Typology Personality Assessment and DISC Leadership Assessment While both the Jung Typology and the DISC s assessment varies, mostly the characteristics it read were seemingly similar. Both tests seem to find my personality to be more introverted and cautious than extroverted and daring. I believe that these tests are mostly accurate, but have some flaws intertwined within. Through the Jung Typology assessment, my results were not surprising and mostly accurate. My results came back as ISFJ, meaning I am more introverted than extroverted, more sensing than intuitive, more feeling than sensing, and more judging than perceiving. D. The DISC assessment, similar to the Jung Typology, I felt was not as accurate and I found more to disagree with. The DISC was more in depth, I thought. The DISC said that I was less decisive, moderately interactive, highly stable, and extremely cautious. Once again the DISC assessment also said I would prefer a stable work environment, and I still disagree with that one. However, I believe it was spot on when it says that I like to analyze a situation before I act on a decision and I am normally the quiet person in a heated debate. In the interactive category, I was almost directly in the middle. However, the only true thing in this category is the fact that I prefer to work alone, the rest were close, but I felt that they were not as explicit at the Jung Typology. For the stability category, I had a pretty high score, which was not very surprising to me. This category was pretty accurate, saying that I am patient with a wide variety of people and that I m not great at letting things go. The cautious category was the highest score (99). This was almost 100% accurate based on my personality. The only flaw I found was that it said I have ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Tar Sands, By Jon Brownell Tar Sands Essay Jon Brownell The Alberta Tar Sands are large deposits of bitumen,a sticky, black and viscous semi solid form of petroleum.(Merriam Webster) The bitumen is extracted from the earth and separated from materials that are not petroleum. This process consumes both water from the Athabasca River drainage basin and energy. While emissions from the water used are low the airborne pollutants contain more than 350 kilograms of cancer causing chemicals every four months.(Kelly) Also, bitumen is one of the least efficient power sources in the world.(Rapier) The Tar Sands are dangerous for people to live near, are environmentally damaging and unsustainable and are an inefficient source of power compared to other sources available in Canada. While the Tar Sands are currently good for the canadian economy, in the long term they will cost us more than they make. The content of cancer causing chemicals like PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) is twice as high as the standard recommended by the national oceanic and atmospheric administration in the United States. These levels have been observed to cause liver cancer in fish. (Timoney 68) Fish from Lake Athabasca have been found with deformities other than liver cancer, like lumps or bumps. No Exit Existentialism The drama, No Exit by Jean Paul Sartre, is about three characters, who made ruthless decisions during their time on earth and are now left in hell to torture one another. The anecdote s setting takes place in hell, where the three characters reveal their horrendous crimes which led to their eternal suffering at the hands of one another. The drama portrays existentialism, which is the idea that the existence of an individual as being free and responsible in determining their own choices whose consequences they must face. A particular scene from the drama, which defines existentialism effectively is, when Estelle was seeking a mirror. Upon not finding one, Inez volunteered to be her personal mirror. Repeatedly, Inez kept on flirting with Estelle, who in return wanted Garcin s affection. Meanwhile, Estelle explained that she had six mirrors in her bedroom that she constantly needed to look at to remind herself of her existence. Finally, Estelle allowed Inez to be her mirror. A vital part of convincing the audience of his existence is in creating the illusion of interaction between himself and others and in the opening of the scene, the body language of Cole s mother and Dr Crowe is used to suggest this. In medium shot, (often used to provide a ?blank sheet? for emotions), we see the two characters in profile. While Dr Crowe is calm and smiling slightly, Cole s mother holds her body angled away from him and has a tight, cold expression, giving a definite impression of tension. From this it appears that a conversation and more probably a disagreement has taken place between them, as a ghost he would be unable to do this, the audience would have no reason to suspect him at this point. The tension also allows us to presume that she looks away from him in order to avoid his gaze, rather than as a result of his invisibility.
