Potential of Solar Energy in India

Solar energy is radiant light and heat from
the sun harnessed using a range of ever-
evolving technologies such as solar
heating, solar photovoltaics, solar thermal
energy, solar architecture.

 Active Mode : This technique include the use of PV
systems, concentrated solar power and solar water
heating to harness the energy.
 Passive Mode: This technique include orienting a
building to the sun, selecting materials with
favourable thermal mass or light dispersing properties
and designing space that naturally circulate air.

 India is blessed with abundant solar insulation for
300 clear, sunny days in a year.
 India’s theoretical solar power reception on only its
land area is about 5,000 trillion kwh/year.
 The daily average solar energy incident over India
varies from 4 – 5 kwh/m2 with about 1500- 2000
sunshine hours per year.

In the budget for 2010/11 the government has
announced an allocation of 1000 crore towards the
Jawahar Lal Nehru National solar mission and the
establishment of clean energy fund.
There are some initiatives of MNRE Govt of India:
 Solar PV system for individual houses.
 Promotion of solar PV systems in urban areas.
 Urban solar cities programs.
 Solar water pumping system to support agriculture.

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy provides
70% subsidy on the installation cost of a solar PV
power plant in north east states and 30% subsidy on
other regions.
- Housing complexes : @ Rs.1900 /- per sq. m.
- Institutional buildings : @ Rs.1750 /-per sq. m.
- Commercial buildings : @ Rs.1400 /-per sq. m.

 FOR USERS:-‐
1.Soft loan @ 2% to domestic users, 3% to institutional
users and 5% to industrial/ commercial users from
IREDA, Public/private sector banks, scheduled
cooperative banks etc.
2. Loan up to 85% of the cost of the systems, repayable
over a period of 5 years.

 Solar power from SPV system and solar concentrating
system is produced in environmental friendly manner.
 Does not generate any waste or pollution.
 Meets the energy requirement in domestic sector in
decentralized manner quite efficiently.
 Best suited for off grid application in stand alone
mode.
 Potential source for exploitation.
 Most efficient when operates in integrated mode.

Commercial use
• On an office building , roof areas can be covered with solar
panels .
• Remote buildings such as schools , communities can make
use of solar energy.
• In developing countries , this solar panels are very much
useful.
• Even on the highways , for every five kilometres ,solar
telephones are used.

  • 2. Solar energy is radiant light and heat from the sun harnessed using a range of ever- evolving technologies such as solar heating, solar photovoltaics, solar thermal energy, solar architecture. 2
  • 3.  Active Mode : This technique include the use of PV systems, concentrated solar power and solar water heating to harness the energy.  Passive Mode: This technique include orienting a building to the sun, selecting materials with favourable thermal mass or light dispersing properties and designing space that naturally circulate air. 3
  • 4.  India is blessed with abundant solar insulation for 300 clear, sunny days in a year.  India’s theoretical solar power reception on only its land area is about 5,000 trillion kwh/year.  The daily average solar energy incident over India varies from 4 – 5 kwh/m2 with about 1500- 2000 sunshine hours per year. 4
  • 5. In the budget for 2010/11 the government has announced an allocation of 1000 crore towards the Jawahar Lal Nehru National solar mission and the establishment of clean energy fund. There are some initiatives of MNRE Govt of India:  Solar PV system for individual houses.  Promotion of solar PV systems in urban areas.  Urban solar cities programs.  Solar water pumping system to support agriculture. 5

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy provides 70% subsidy on the installation cost of a solar PV power plant in north east states and 30% subsidy on other regions. - Housing complexes : @ Rs.1900 /- per sq. m. - Institutional buildings : @ Rs.1750 /-per sq. m. - Commercial buildings : @ Rs.1400 /-per sq. m. 10
  • 11.  FOR USERS:-‐ 1.Soft loan @ 2% to domestic users, 3% to institutional users and 5% to industrial/ commercial users from IREDA, Public/private sector banks, scheduled cooperative banks etc. 2. Loan up to 85% of the cost of the systems, repayable over a period of 5 years. 11
  • 12.  Solar power from SPV system and solar concentrating system is produced in environmental friendly manner.  Does not generate any waste or pollution.  Meets the energy requirement in domestic sector in decentralized manner quite efficiently.  Best suited for off grid application in stand alone mode.  Potential source for exploitation.  Most efficient when operates in integrated mode. 12

USES OF SOLAR ENERGY • Heaters Green houses • Cars water pumps • Lights Desalination • Satellites Chilling • Dryers Solar ponds • Calculators Thermal Commercial use • On an office building , roof areas can be covered with solar panels . • Remote buildings such as schools , communities can make use of solar energy. • In developing countries , this solar panels are very much useful. • Even on the highways , for every five kilometres ,solar telephones are used.
