Solar energy is energy that is present
in sunlight. It has been used for thousands of
years in many different ways by people all over
the world. As well as its traditional human uses
in heating, cooking, and drying, it is used today
to make electricity where other power supplies
are absent, such as in remote places and
in space. It is becoming cheaper to make
electricity from solar energy and in many
situations it is now competitive with energy
from coal or oil.
The theoretically
calculated solar
energy incidence on
India's land area is about
5000 trillion kilowatt-
hours . The solar energy
available in a year
exceeds the possible
energy output of all fossil
fuel energy reserves in
India.
• The Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (also
known as the National Solar Mission) is an initiative of
the Government of India and State Governments to
promote renewable energy, especially solar power. The
objective of the National Solar Mission is to
establish India as a global leader in solar energy, by
creating the policy conditions for its diffusion across the
country as quickly as possible. The program was
inaugurated by the former Prime Minister of India,
Dr. Manmohan Singh on 11 January 2010 with a target of
20GW by 2022 which was later increased to 100 GW
in 2015.

• Kamuthi Solar Power Project is a solar
photovoltaic power generating station
at Kamuthi, 90 km from Madurai, in the state
of Tamil Nadu, India. This project has been
commissioned by Adani Power.
• With a generating capacity of 648 MW at a
single location it is billed as the world's
largest single location solar project.
• The project was completed on 21 September
2016 with an investment of around 4,550 cr.
• Gujarat Solar Park is the name used for a
group of solar parks being constructed
in Gujarat, India. A total of about 1100 MW
are commissioned as of March 2016, with
individual solar parks ranging from
hundreds of kW to 40 MW capacity. The
largest site within the Gujarat Solar Park is
being built on a 2,000-hectare (4,900-acre)
plot of land near Charanka village in Patan
district, northern Gujarat. This hosts about
19 different projects by different developers.
On 19 April 2012, a total of 214 megawatts
(287,000 hp) had been commissioned. It also
became the world's second largest
photovoltaic power station
Other solar hybrids include solar-wind
systems. The combination of wind and solar
has the advantage that the two sources
complement each other because the peak
operating times for each system occur at
different times of the day and year. The power
generation of such a hybrid system is more
constant and fluctuates less than each of the
two component subsystems.
Solar hybrid power systems are hybrid
power systems that combine solar power from
a photovoltaic system with another power
generating energy source . A common type is
a photovoltaic diesel hybrid system
combining photovoltaic (PV) and diesel
generators.

• One of the easiest ways to improve home efficiency
is to add outdoor solar lighting to your property.
Unlike traditional exterior lights, solar lighting
requires no complicated setup as the lights are
wireless and harness sunlight during the day to
circumvent the need for grid-supplied electricity at
night. Though solar lights are not yet as common as
solar panels, they are quickly joining the likes of LED
bulbs and smart home thermostats as a cheap
product that can reduce electric bills and improve
the efficiency of your home.
• Powering consumer
electronics has become a
common solar power use in
today’s world – everything
from a cell phone to a

is becoming a popular offering

sector.
Solar Impulse is a Swiss long-range experimental
solar-powered aircraft project, and also the name
of the project's two operational aircraft. It
Conducted its first test flight in December 2009.
In July 2010, it flew an entire diurnal solar cycle,
including nearly nine hours of night flying,
in a 26-hour flight.
Piccard and Borschberg completed successful
solar-
powered flights from Switzerland to Spain and
then
Morocco in 2012, and conducted a multi-stage
flight across the US in 2013. A second aircraft,
completed in 2014 and named Solar Impulse 2,
carries more solar cells and more powerful
motors, among other improvements.
