1. INSTITUTIONS
Conglomerates
The company ‘IPC MEDIA’ is owned by the conglomerate
‘Time Warner’ which also owns ‘Warner Bros.’, ‘HBO’,
‘Turner Broadcasting’ and many more companies.
IPC Media was founded in 1968 and is a very large consumer magazine and digital publisher
in the United Kingdom, with a large portfolio selling over 350 million copies every year.
IPC Media publish magazines such as NME, Look and Uncut. NME is the most popular
magazine owned by IPC Media, and is mostly associated with rock, indie and alternative
music. It first started as a newspaper, but gradually became a magazine.
In order to further promote the company, NME uses synergy to widen its audience. They
include:
 NME.COM – NME’s website
contains Music news, videos and
blogs, as well as awards and
tickets.
 NME Awards – An award show
celebrating the best albums and
songs of the year. The readers of
the magazines vote.
 NME Tours – NME sponsors a
tour of the United Kingdom by
up-and-coming bands each year.
 NME India – In March 2012, NME launched an Indian version of the website.
The use of synergy in a conglomerate is effective as it broadens the company and brings in a
larger audience as IPC Media owns NME and Warner Bros, so it attracts both Music and film
fans.

2. Corporations
The company ‘SpinMedia’ is a digital publisher in the U.S, which owns a number of pop
culture websites. It was originally known as ‘Buzz Media’.
SpinMedia owns websites such as Spin, Buzznet, Idolater, Stereogum and Vibe.
Vibe was a hip-hop and R&B magazine founded by music producer, Quincy Jones. In 2014,
the magazine became available only online.
Vibe has released other media products in order to expand the brand:
 Vibe has published books based on hip-hop culture.
 Vibe Vixen – A spin-off publication aimed at Vibe’s multicultural female
demographic.
 Vibe Online – The magazine’s online presence.
 Vibe on Demand – an on demand program
 VLN TV – an online video channel.
 The Vibe Music Mixer App.
 Vibe Awards – an annual televised award show.

3. The use of synergy in a corporation is effective as promoting the different types of media
widens the audience. For example, Spin Media owns multiple websites and each have each
have a unique factor, gaining an audience that has mixed opinions on music.
