My media product would likely be distributed by a large media institution such as Billboard magazine or Bauer Media. Billboard is a major American entertainment media brand that publishes news, reviews, and stories involving the music industry. They have a large audience and distribute Billboard magazine, which focuses on pop, hip-hop, and R&B music. Although my Afrobeats magazine would have a different focus, distributing with Billboard could help expand their offerings and expose my content to their large existing audience. Bauer Media is another potential option as the largest privately-owned publishing group in Europe, distributing over 300 magazines worldwide on various topics.

Media Institutions for Afrobeats Magazine Distribution
1. Question 3
What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
2. What is a media institution?
• A media conglomerate, media group, or media institution is a company that owns numerous
companies involved in mass media enterprises, such as television, radio, publishing, motion
pictures, theme parks, or the Internet.
Here are some examples of media institutions
• IPC media
• BBC
• Development hell
• SKY
• CNN
• ITV
• Channel 4
3. What kind of media institution
might distribute your media
product and why?
• Billboard (magazine) Billboard is an American entertainment
media brand owned by the Hollywood Reporter-Billboard
Media Group, a division of Eldridge Industries. It publishes
pieces involving news, video, opinion, reviews, events and
style. The Billboard Hot 100 has a formula. They track airplay
on about a thousand terrestrial radio stations (AM/FM radio in
the USA). Digital download song sales and physical singles
sales (data from Nielsen SoundScan) is factored in. Radio
airplay and sales are the ingredients that carry the most
weight in the formula. The Billboard Music Award is an honour
given by Billboard, a publication and music popularity chart
covering the music business. PGM has been publishing
billboard since 2009. My magazine could distributed by
because they are distributing one of the biggest music
magazines which is billboard, however my magazine doesn’t
follow the same conventions of a billboard magazine as it’s
based on Afrobeats. Although Billboard focuses on the
Pop/Hip-Hop/R&B Genre, my magazine could be distributed
because Afrobeats has become very popular and many of the
artists have worked with artists within that genre. Distributing
my magazine will add something new and unique to the
institution. I believe that my product could be distributed
because it is visually appealing, it offers a unique voice and
address subjects of individual interest.
4. Big magazine distributing institutes…
• Bauer Media
Bauer media is a division of the Bauer Media
Group, Europe’s largest privately owned
publishing group. It is a world wide media
empire offering over 300 magazines in 15
countries, as well as online, TV and radio
stations. It distributes magazines such as Q
Closer and Kerrang!
• IPC Media
is a consumer magazine and a digital publisher
founded in 1958 in the united kingdom, it has a
large portfolio and sells over 350 million copies
each year. It supplies magazines and
newspapers such as NME, Look and Pick me up.
5. • Emap
• Emap was the second largest magazine publisher in
uk with about 18% of the news- stand market by
revenue (to IPC/Time Warner’s 20%). However, in July
2007, the company announced a strategic review. The
result was that the company was split up and sold off
in December.
• Development Hell Ltd.
• Set up by ex-Emap executives David Hepworth, Jerry
Perkins, Mark Ellen and Andrew Harrison. Business
plan to launch three magazines over six years. First
launch in March 2003, was word, highlighting on
music and entertainment: On the cover It said ‘New!
Something to read!’ in November 2005, clubbing
magazine, mixmag was brought from Emap. The
guardian media group took a 14% share in the
company in July 2004.
6. How frequently will your
magazine be circulated?
Where might your
magazine be distributed?
• My magazine will be distributed every
month
• I think my magazine might be
distributed in local shops or even high
street retailers.
• My magazine could even be distributed
on a app. The answers that I received on
my questionnaire in the beginning
revealed that most people, especially
young people, don’t buy magazines or
hardly ever buy them. Using an app
would make it more accessible to my
target audience and also if its free then
they’d be more likely to read it .
