My Music Magazine
Evaluation Of My Music Magazine Institution
What kind of media institution might
distribute your media product and
why?
Q3
What Is An Institution ?
A Media Institution is a company involved in
the Media that produces Media texts such as
films, magazines, TV shows, or any other
media product. Examples of Institutions
would include Universal Pictures, who
produce and distribute blockbuster films and
Vertigo Films, who mostly produce films of a
low budget and indie style.
In the magazine world, Institutions would
include Bauer Media, who produce and
distribute Kerrang and Q Magazine and IPC
Media, who produce and distribute NME and
UNCUT.
IPC Media ?
IPC Media was originally formed in 1963
when the companies Fleetway, Odhams
and Newnes were combined by the
creation of a holding company called the
International Publishing Corporation (
known as IPC. All of the existing
companies would continue to exist, but as
IPC subsidiaries.
In 1998, a section of the company (IPC
Magazines) was bought by Cinven which
then reformed the name to IPC Media. IPC
Media formally became Time Inc. UK in
September 2014, creating a single Time
Inc. brand in both the US and UK.
IPC Media create magazines such as NME
and UNCUT.
Bauer Media Group ?
Bauer Media Group is a European-based media
company, headquartered in Hamburg, Germany that
manages a portfolio of more than 600 magazines,
over 400 digital products and 50 radio and TV
stations around the world. The portfolio includes
print shops, postal, distribution and marketing
services. Bauer Media Group has a workforce of
approximately 11,000 employees in 17 countries.
Kerrang! is a brand that specialises in rock music. It
originally began as a magazine and in 2004 Kerrang
Radio was launched. A Kerrang TV channel also
exists. As of 2005 all of Kerrang TV's programme
content is music videos the majority of which is open
scheduled for text requests from their playlist.
The Q music brand has expanded to Radio and
Television, with Q Radio and Q TV being music
entertainment that specialises in indie, rock and
alternative.
My Magazine ?
The target audience for my Music Magazine is late
teens and early adults mostly in their 20s, My
music magazine is unisex as it entertains both
sexes. My music magazine has the same feel and
style of kerrang! And Q magazine but as the whole
genre of rock such as punk, heavy, glam and many
more. This could be such a massive global
magazine as it doesn’t just choose a specific style
of rock, instead included nearly all of them with a
different style every week.
This suggests that Bauer Media Group would be
the best choice of institute as IPC Media do focus
on a wide range of genres, the look and style suits
magazines such as Kerrang! And Q magazine. I
strongly believe that Bauer Media could benefit
from this magazine as it includes past information
and secrets of the living and also dead artists. With
Top 10’s every week which then readers could
participate to the list through their phones/devices.
