Task 4
1. Task 4 – Research into music
industries and institutions
2. Magazines and target audiences IPC
have been associated with
IPC has been associated with many magazines over the years, in the 1800s it was linked with:
Country Life, Horse & Hound, Shooting Times, Yachting World, Amateur Gardening, Cycling
Weekly, Amateur Photographer and The Railway Magazine.
The target audience in the 1800s was middle aged men, as they were clearly trying to target a
variety of them by using different interests in sporting, photography, gardening and many more. It
is evident that they were targeting middle aged men as most of these interests are usually
associated with men.
In the early 1900s they introduced magazines such as: Yachting Monthly, Cage Birds, Motor Boat,
Woman’s Weekly.
From the 1920s – 1990s they started introducing more women magazines as they began making:
Women & Home, Homes & Gardens, Woman’s Own. However, in the 1950s they released one of
the most famous/well known magazines that is still around today New Musical Express(NME)
which was targeted at both men and women.
In today’s society 2000s IPC changed their name to IPC Media. They introduced two of the biggest
magazines of today Nuts which was the world’s first men’s weekly magazine and it turned out to
be the biggest launch in IPC’s history. 2005 they introduced a weekly magazine for women called
Pick Me Up which was the largest sampling exercise in UK magazine history.
3.
4. Why IPC would be an appropriate publisher
for a new magazine
IPC would be appropriate publisher for a new magazine because they have years of
experience and have created magazines such as ‘NME’ which was really successful
therefore they would be able to then go on to create another successful magazine. They
have experience and knowledge in publishing, creating and what features should be
used within a magazine to suit the target audience of their choice. They have created a
variety of different genre magazines so they would know how to reach out to their
target audience and what to include in the magazine.
Taken from IPC’s website they stated:
IPC Media is the UK's leading consumer magazine and digital publisher
With more than 60 iconic media brands, IPC creates content for multiple platforms,
across print, online, mobile, tablets and events. We engage with 26 million UK adults almost two thirds of UK women and over 40% of UK men. Our award winning portfolio
of websites reaches over 25 million global users every month.
5. Genres of music/types of magazines they
would be likely to publish
IPC would be most likely to publish a indie/rock magazine due to the fact of how successful ‘NME’
was also because they have had a lot of experience within that genre over the years. Thus
meaning that they know what the target audience would want to be included in the magazine to
fit their interests.
However, because over the years they have published a lot of women magazines so that would
be another type they would be likely to publish. Mainly in the 1900s they introduced most of
them so as they have a lot of experience because they published more than 4 magazines targeted
at women so therefore, they will know what to include in the magazine and how to attract their
target audience.
6. Alternative publishers
Alternative publishers such as Bauer
may be appropriate to use as well
because they have had years of
experience as well as IPC and have
published magazines such as:
Kerrang, Mojo, Q. This also means
that they have a lot of experience of
working with different genres and
target audiences which is an
advantage. Furthermore, as the
majority of the music magazines
they have published are indie/rock
genre so as they’re most familiar
with those genres they would be
most likely to publish another
magazine relating to them.
