Perfume became less associated with health in 1810 with a Napoleonic ordinance which
required perfumers to announce the ingredients of all products for internal consumption.
Unwilling to divulge their secrets, traders concentrated on products for external use. Napoleon
affected the industry in other ways too. With French ports blockaded by the British during the
Napoleonic wars, the London perfumers were able to dominate the markets for some time.
One of the significant changes in the nineteenth century was the idea of branding. Until
then, trademarks had had little significance in the perfumery where goods were consumed
locally, although they had a long history in other industries. One of the pioneers in this field was
Rimmel who was nationalized as a British citizen in 1857. He took advantage of the spread of
railroads to reach customers in wider markets. To do this, he built a brand which conveyed
prestige and quality, and were worth paying a premium for. He recognised the role of design in
enhancing the value of his products, hiring a French lithographer to create the labels for his
perfume bottles.

During the translation of this text (paragraph 4) first of all I considered, it was an interesting
topic on perfume, In translating the fourth paragraph of the text, for me, this exercise was
meaningful because I learned new vocabulary I focused in the mean of the title because it gives a
general idea of the text with some words, the main idea was to choose the appropriated for the
text and I used the synonyms dictionary. I start translating complete sentences to achieve a good
sense to the translation with coherent and logical phrases and in this way to facilitate the
comprehension of the text, and sometimes I did it word by word although I found several
unknown words so I used an English dictionary to clear my doubts My unknown words were
these:´´Branding´´, ´´Spread´´, ´´conveyed´´ and ´´brand´´. I think that when we develop these
translation skills, what is really important is to try to express the same idea by retaining the
original meaning of the text.
the technique I used was Direct Translation Techniques (literal translation) in which, as its name
indicates, is word for word because in the translation of the paragraph sometimes I had to be
legitimate to the writer and therefore remain unchanged and also I had to use the technique of
oblique translation: (Modulation) In the same way I translated the expression "Until then" by:
"Up until that time" the expression "Trademarks had had little significance in the perfumery" by
"trademarks are becoming less important in the perfumery" and "reach customers in wider
markets" by "reach other markets and expand his offer to more customers".in order to get a
coherent and understandable translation to for maintaining the same original meaning of the
paragraph.
METHOD STRATEGY TECHNIQUE
It is the set of strategies and tools that are
used to reach a precise objective, in other
words it is the way of doing something in a
systematic, organized or structured way.
This refers to a technique or set of tasks in
order to achieve a predetermined goal, in
some cases it is also understood as the usual
way of doing something for a person based
on experience, custom and personal
preferences.
When it comes to the differences, a method
is the way or an application of an approach
to teaching languages
the English teacher tries to
find their teaching method so that their
students improve their learning and also
every student learns new vocabulary
- Strategy helps translators to articulate
and potentialize links between prior
knowledge and new knowledge, in the
construction and interpretation of texts and
facilitating the mental schematization of
information.
- Strategies opted for by translators to be
transferred in rendering allusions play a
crucial role in recognition and perception
of connotations.
- A potentially conscious procedure for
solving a problem faced in translating a
text, or any segment of it.
The strategy is the specific steps taken to
implement a method
translating a song
- Technique is used for sentences and
the smaller units of language.
- Techniques are used when structural
and conceptual elements of the source
language can be transposed into the
target language.
A technique comes from a strategy and
it is implemented to facilitate the
process within the classroom with
behavior and activities.
If you are a journalist
working in a multilingual society, you
may have to work in more than one
language. Whether you gather the
information in one language and write
the story in another, or whether you
write a story first in one language and
then rewrite in another language,
However, if you have a good command
of both languages and follow a few
simple rules, translation should not be
difficult. Different languages also have
different grammar, different word
orders, sometimes even words for which
other languages do not have any
equivalents
Hi good afternoon, dear partner LAURA XIMENA ESPEJO, Continuing with step # 4 of the activities guide, it is
necessary to give feedback to your contributions, I have reviewed your work, I can say that you have done a good
translation of the selected paragraph your translation seems to me very good, and i can see in your reflection that
you tried hard to make the translation and that it made a lot of sense and coherence. the intention of the text is
understood and translated sentences are following the rules in this respect about your reflection is important to
highlight a factor that happens to us all and is the fact that at the time of translation we will always have some
degree of difficulty, in addition we are going to find with many words that we do not know yet, reason why the
process of translation also implies that we have a wealth in vocabulary, your chart is well structured and the
concepts well presented.

At first, the use of fragrances was primarily associated with healing.
Aromatic alcoholic waters were ingested as well as used externally. Fragrances
were used to purify the air, both for spiritual and health purposes. During the
Black Death, the bubonic plague was thought to have resulted from a bad
odour which could be averted by inhaling pleasant fragrances such as
cinnamon. The Black Death led to an aversion to using water for washing, and so
perfume was commonly used as a cleaning agent.
Later on, the craft of perfume re-entered Europe, and was centred in Venice,
chiefly because it was an important trade route and a centre for glass-making.
Having such materials at hand was essential for the distillation process. In the late
seventeenth century, trade soared in France, when Louis XIV brought in policies of
protectionism and patronage which stimulated the purchase of luxury goods. Here,
perfumery was the preserve of glove-makers. The link arose since the tanning of
leather required putrid substances. Consequently, the gloves were scented before
they were sold and worn. A glove and perfume makers’ guild had existed here
since 1190. Entering it required 7 years of formal training under a master
perfumer.
At first, the use of fragrances was mainly related with healing. Aromatic
alcoholic waters were drunk and used in the exterior. Fragrances were used to
disinfect the air, with two purposes for spiritual and health. During the Black
Death, people thought that bad smell caused the bubonic plague, which could be
stayed off by smelling fragrances like cinnamon. Black Death caused an aversion
to the use of water to wash, so perfume was usually used as a cleaner agent.
Later, the art of perfume came back to Europe and focused on Venice,
mainly because it was an important trade route and a center for the manufacture of

the end of the seventeenth century, trade soared in France, when Louis XIV
introduced policies of protectionism and patronage that stimulated the purchase of
luxury goods. Here, perfumery was exclusive to the glove makers. The link was
because the leather tanning required decomposed substances. Consequently, the
gloves were perfumed before being sold and used. A glove and perfume makers
association had existed here since 1190. Getting into it required 7 years of formal
training under the direction of a master perfumer.
This text was very interesting to translate, because it was not too
difficult but I could face some challenges in the process of translating it.
There were some new words, first at all I tried to find the sense of the
whole sentence to find the meaning of the word, but when it does not
work I take hand of a dictionary to look for their meaning, after that I
think about the correct meaning for the text. It was very important read
constantly the text as in English as in Spanish to find the closer sense to
the original text.
The techniques used to translate paragraph 2 were Oblique Translation
Techniques, the process was transposition because parts of speech
change their sequence when they are translated
METHOD STRATEGY TECHNIQUE
Method is the way of work
out systematically
organized or structured.
Example: A teacher uses
songs to teach English
numbers.
Strategy is a plan that
specifies a series of step or
core concepts that aim to
achieve a certain goal.
Example: When a company
lows its prices to sell more.
Technique a set of
procedures, material or
intellectual, is applied on a
specific task.
Example: The way a student
solves a long division
equation.
Dear parther Claudia López you made good contributios, your translation is well structured, the
chart is clear to understand the difference between method, strategy and technique.

He recognised the role of design in enhancing the value of his products, hiring a French lithographer to create the labels for his perfume bottles. perfume became less related to health in 1810 with a Napoleonic ordinance which required perfumers to inform the ingredients of all products for internal consumption. Unwilling to reveal their secrets, traders focused on products for external use. Napoleon harmed the industry in other ways too. With French ports obstructed by the British through the Napoleonic wars, the London perfumers were able to take over the markets for some time. One of the meaningful changes in the 19th century was the idea of branding. • 7. During the translation of this text (paragraph 4) first of all I considered, it was an interesting topic on perfume, In translating the fourth paragraph of the text, for me, this exercise was meaningful because I learned new vocabulary I focused in the mean of the title because it gives a general idea of the text with some words, the main idea was to choose the appropriated for the text and I used the synonyms dictionary. I start translating complete sentences to achieve a good sense to the translation with coherent and logical phrases and in this way to facilitate the comprehension of the text, and sometimes I did it word by word although I found several unknown words so I used an English dictionary to clear my doubts My unknown words were these:´´Branding´´, ´´Spread´´, ´´conveyed´´ and ´´brand´´. I think that when we develop these translation skills, what is really important is to try to express the same idea by retaining the original meaning of the text. the technique I used was Direct Translation Techniques (literal translation) in which, as its name indicates, is word for word because in the translation of the paragraph sometimes I had to be legitimate to the writer and therefore remain unchanged and also I had to use the technique of oblique translation: (Modulation) In the same way I translated the expression "Until then" by: "Up until that time" the expression "Trademarks had had little significance in the perfumery" by "trademarks are becoming less important in the perfumery" and "reach customers in wider markets" by "reach other markets and expand his offer to more customers".in order to get a coherent and understandable translation to for maintaining the same original meaning of the paragraph.
