ASSURE Method
A- Analyze Learners-
It is a first grade special education class with 17 children in it. Ten are boys and seven are girls.
The race qualities of the classroom is 70% white, 20% African-American, and 10% Hispanic.
Seven students in the class have mild to severe ADHD.
S- Specify Objectives
Students will identify the months of the year. They will accomplish this through singing a song
as a class which they will create hand motions to add to the song one day. Then the next day,
they will decorate a booklet with the months in it that they will write a sentence that describes
what happens during that month with an 85% understanding.
S- Select Methods, Media, and Materials
To keep the students interested, singing a song and creating hand motions will give the students a
creative way to remember the months and their names. Also, if they have hand motions with it
they can identify the month with the motions so, remembering the name may not be as difficult.
They will create their own personal calendar book that helps them learn more about what
happens in each month and shows a change in the seasons.
Media and Materials
We will need a computer and projector to stream the song. Also, we will need 17 booklets,
markers and crayons to create their calendar booklets.
U- Utilize Media and Materials
2. Before class starts I will preview the song to make sure everything is in working order. Then the
next day, I will set the booklets out and the decorating supplies out so they are ready to go when
we move into that section. Before we move into learning about the months each day I will
explain to the children the lesson for the day and how we are going to accomplish it.
R- Require Learners Participation
Being creative with the learning process will make it easier for kids with ADHD to stay on task
and keep them moving. They will be able to show more interaction without having to stay in
their seats and learn. The lesson will also be visual and auditory to the students who learn better
that way. Also, students that are tactile will be able to create the calendars to be able to learn.
E- Evaluate and Revise
Finally, we will go over as a class the months to make sure everyone is understanding the
material. Then, in individual small groups I will ask questions to them to get a better understand
of who knows and who doesn’t.
Ways to revise the assignment, constructing individual sentences may be difficult at the first
grade level so as a class we may have to come up with the sentences. Also, if technology is not
available, as a class we may have to come up a song ourselves which would make students learn
music or I will need to remember the song myself and teach the children from memory.
