ENGLISH 7_Q4_LESSON 2_ Employing a Variety of Strategies for Effective Interp...
Teaching First Graders the Months of the Year
1. Katey Daniels
I. A - Analyze Learners
General Characteristics - The students for which this lesson is intended are in
the first grade. The general age range is between 6 to 7 years. The students
come from varied backgrounds and are of several different races, with white
being the most predominant. This particular class consists of only special
education students, with a little less than half of them being diagnosed with
mild to moderate ADHD; for this reason much of the lesson must be geared
toward class participation and group work rather than individual work as it
makes it harder for the students to stay on task.
Entry Competencies - First grade students should generally be able to identify
several words, know how to organize things into patterns, know many
holidays, and have probably heard the months of the year in some capacity.
Learning Styles - The students are young as well as being in a special
education class. To add to this, many in the class have ADHD. Because of this,
the attention span of the children and their ability to memorize it make it best
to work in an interactive environment and in groups rather than using written
materials with independent study. Also, with these limited attention spans,
repetition will be key to making sure they retain the information presented.
II. S - State Objectives
The objectives for this lesson are for at least 80% of this first grade class to
have the ability to do the following:
1) Successfully recite the months of the year
2) Successfully organize the months of the year in order when presented
with a mixed list.
3) Have the ability to do the above with at least 80% accuracy within at least
a five minute time frame.
4) Create and bind a hand-made calendar that can be taken home.
5) Work in small groups to create and present a poster representative of an
assigned month to contribute to a “class calendar.”
III. S - Select Methods, Media, and Materials
Methods - To help my students learn the month of the year, I will try to use
hands on activities as much as possible to keep them on task. It is my goal to
make this a fun experience for them and to repeat the material enough times in
as many different formats to help it stick in their minds.
Media - At the beginning of each class I will use the projector to play a video
with a memorable song about the months of the year. This will hopefully help
open the students up to what we are about to discuss and get them thinking
about the lesson. I will also be using printed handouts to have the students
illustrate their own personal calendar to take home at the end of the week.
Printed handouts will also be given for the poster that the students will decorate
in their small groups to help contribute to our “classroom calendar.” In
addition, at the end of each class we will read a book about the months of the
year and/or the holidays or seasons involved that take place in them. This will
help the students settle down and recap that portion of the day.
2. Materials -
1) Projector
2) Youtube videos
3) Construction paper
4) Scissors
5) Yarn (to bind the children’s calendar)
6) Coloring/Writing utensils
IV. U - Utilize Media and Materials
Preview The Materials - I will preview the video before the lesson, make sure
the book is appropriate for the day we are covering.
Prepare The Materials - Before class begins, I will make sure that the video
has buffered before each class and is ready to be played. The handouts to create
their calendars as well as the large poster board to create their small group
projects will be ready before each class. The materials to color and create will
be ready as well.
Prepare The Environment - Because of the group project being done as well
as the daily project of making their individual calendars, I will have the desks
arranged in groups of 3-4 for them each morning with coloring utensils already
ready in the center of the table. This will encourage them to talk amongst
themselves about what they are doing as well as allow them to remember to
share the colors they are using. The projector to display the video will be ready
and waiting for them when they walk through the door to start the day.
Prepare The Learners - To start each day we will begin with the sing-a-long
video. This will let the students know what we are starting for the day as well
as make sure that they have something to get them concentrating on what is
going on inside the classroom.
Provide A Learning Experience - Using everything I have mentioned
previously I will attempt to give the students the most immersive learning
experience possible with the hopes that it will help them retain the information.
I am hoping that the repetition will allow them to retain the information, while
the fun activities will keep them interested and eager to learn.
V. R - Require Learner Participation
Students will break into small groups to make posters for each month of the
year, they will then present their month to their classmates explaining what the
month is and what they know about a few of the holidays/events that take place
within it based on things we will talk/read about in class. They will then help to
hang the poster in an area of the classroom to contribute to a hand-made
“classroom calendar.”
Students will be encouraged to dance and sing to the video at the beginning of
class. The song will help them memorize the months of the year and the
dancing will help them wake up and become ready to participate and receive
information.
Students will be active in making their own calendars to take home. They will
be responsible for decorating them, organizing them into the appropriate order,
and binding them with yarn.
3. Students will be asked each day to remember/reflect on what they liked about
the book from day before. Class discussion will be encouraged and rewarded
with stickers for participation. This will hopefully give the students an
incentive to stay on task and pay close attention while the story is being read at
the close of each day.
VI. E - Evaluate and Revise
Before we begin the lesson for the week I will ask the children what they
already know about the months of the year.
At the end of the week, the children’s take home calendar project will be
assessed to see if it is organized in the correct order and represents the
appropriate theme of each month. In addition, they will be asked to recite the
months of the year to the best of their ability. If a satisfactory percentage
(greater than or equal to 80%) of the children have learned the months of the
year the lesson will remain as-is. If they have not, pieces of the lesson will be
removed and others added for future classes.
After the assessment, the children will be asked the following questions:
1) What was your least favorite part of the week?
2) What was your most favorite part of the week?
3) Was there anything you needed better help understanding?
4) Do you feel like you’ve learned the months of the year? Do you at least
know more now than you did before you started?
