2. Analyze Learners
– The instructional unit is for first grade students enrolled in a general lesson on the
months of the year geared toward the average learner. The students range in age
from 6 to 8 years. We have one special education student and the class is not very
culturally diverse. They come from various socioeconomic environments; however,
the majority of the students are white, middle class Americans who live in a rural
area. Some are from Latino and African-American origins.
– The first graders will have had a working knowledge of basic alphabetic skills and
reading. Mostly, they will be familiar with picture representation and definition.
– They will learn best by having interactive activity's that help with memorization like
songs.
3. State Objectives
– Students will be introduced by viewing a slideshow of each month with an
appropriate picture attached.
– Then sing a song that goes over the months in order
– Repeat song and do a matching activity putting the months in order on the
smartboard
– Everyday of the week we will repeat the song at the beginning of the lesson
– Then coloring of months and pictures, then cut out and paste in order
– Last activity, each student will be a month and the class will put themselves in
order
4. Select Methods and Media
– A PowerPoint is he first media used which I can create using internet sourcing
– An interactive matching game for the months can be found online as well and
works great with the smart board system
– Songs are found in abundance online and can be easily accessed
– Lastly, I will be using yarn and paper to print out the months to label each child
5. Utilize Media
– I will present the unit by introducing the ideas with the PowerPoint I created on the
smart board.
– Then the students will be given space to stand if they wish and sing along with the
song as the PowerPoint is being played so they can follow along.
– The matching activity on the smartboard will go over each month three times giving
each student plenty of opportunity and each student can learn from each other.
– Lastly, the students will help move the desks out of the way and asked to put
themselves in order from January to December. Some kids will be the pictures
portraying the months and have to stand behind said month i.e a snowman for
December.
6. Require Learner Participation
– The introduction will allow each student to see a picture and written word of
each month then saying it out loud. This allows each student the opportunity to
see, read, speak, and hear the lesson.
– The song allows a reiteration of the introduction in a fun and memorable way.
– The smartboard activity gives each child a personal connection to the lesson
without the pressure of having to get it right or wrong alone because the class is
able to help and see what's going on. Giving the class as a whole a lesson as
well.
– Finally, the organization of themselves, who represent the months, insures that
the children work as a team to put themselves in order.
7. Evaluate, Revise
– The students will not be formally tested but I will be able to assess their
competency for the months through the group activities. I will then ask the
students what their favorite part of the month lesson was and review what
worked and what worked least to make the lesson more effective in the future.
