1. A-Analyze your students
1-Teaching the months of the year to a 1st
grade class, Special ed, 10 boys, 7
girls, 70% white 20% African-American and 10% Hispanic.7 students in the
class have mild to severe ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder).
S-State objectives
1. My students will recite the months of the year in order by singing a song,
using picture cues, or by writing them on paper, by the end of the unit
with 80-100% accuracy.
2. My students will match the months of the year to corresponding numbers
(ex. January matches with one) by using a Smart Notebook activity with
the help of their classmates, with 90-100% accuracy by the end of the
lesson.
3. My students will create a glogster, with pictures and titles of each month,
by following directions given by the teacher with 95-100% accuracy by
the end of the week.
4. My students will recognize and place the months in order on a handout
with 75-100% by the end of the unit.
S-Select methods, media and materials
Methods
To teach the months of the year to my first grade special edu. class, I will
use a variety of methods to meet the different learning styles of my
students. Also, since some of the students in the class suffer from ADHD, I
plan to make this learning experience fun and hands on. One of the methods
I will use is a song to help the students remember the order of the months of
the year in a musical form. Another method that will be utilized is a game
using notecards, teams and numbers on the board. The students will be split
into teams and will be given notecards with months of the year or pictures
that correspond to the month. Students will have to quickly place the
notecards with the matching number on the board. Within the allotted
timeframe the teams will receive a point for every correct answer. The
winning team will receive a sticker of their choice. I will also make use of a
handout and foldable to check for understanding and allow the students to
create something of their own to help them remember the months of the
year. For the most part I will be using hands on methods with a little verbal
teaching and modeling to help my students understand the concept of the
months of the year.
Media
The smartboard will be used to show a youtube video about the months of
the year and to play the song we will learn with lyrics for the students during
the lesson. Also, I will use the elmo to project the handouts and foldable
2. directions in order to model for the students what is expected of them.
Printed materials (handouts) and pictures will be utilized throughout as well.
The smartboard will also be used for the smart exchange activity and to
display the students glogsters to the rest of the class.
Materials
1. Smartboard
2. Handouts
3. Notecards with pictures or names of months of the year on them
4. Paper
5. Scissors
6. Markers, colored pencils, or crayons
7. Lyrics to the song
8. Pencil
9. Powerpoint
U-utilize media and materials
Preview the materials- I will preview the youtube videos and smart
exchange activities before use during the lesson
Prepare the materials- I will make sure the activity works on the
smartboard, create the handout, type up the lyrics and make an
example glogster before the start of the lesson. I will also pre-search
the youtube link and have it up on the computer, to save time and to
make sure it is the correct video.
Prepare the environment- Due to majority of the work being done in
small groups or teams, the classroom will be set up with the desk
arranged in table like formats. This will keep the students from getting
distracted from the topic by moving desks, and it will give them a clue
on how things will be done for the day. Also I will check that the elmo,
smartboard, and projector are all on and working to ensure smooth
usage of materials throughout.
Prepare the learners-To, prepare my students I will go over the
expectations of them throughout. I will discuss the importance of
learning the months of the year and how it is relevant to their
everyday lives. I will also explain to them how I will be evaluating
them at the end, so that they know what to work toward throughout.
Provide a learning experience- I will use the above listed methods
throughout the lesson to provide the students with a learning
experience. When presenting the materials, directions and such, I will
make sure to use eye contact, enthusiasm and positive reinforcement
throughout the experience to keep my students engaged in learning
and provide them with a new learning experience (months of the
year).
3. R-require learner participation
Large group activities- As a class, the students will engage in listening as I
do a quick overview of the months of the year using a pre-made powerpoint
and a youtube video. After that is finished, we will begin to learn a song that
teaches the order of the months of the year. I will first go over the lyrics with
them, and I will teach them a few hand motions to do to help them
remember and make connections with the months of the year. Then, we will
sing and dance to the song as it plays on the smartboard with words.
Small group activities- The students will already be broken up into groups
prior to entering class. In those groups, they will be asked to work as a team
to win a game using the knowledge they previously gained from the
powerpoint and the song. This game will allow every student the opportunity
to participate and work on peer relationships among students as they ask for
help among their teams. The teams will be given notecards one at a time
with either the name of a month or a picture representing that month and
within thirty seconds will have to place the notecard on the smartboard with
the months corresponding number. (example: snowflake and January would
go with the number 1)
Individual activities- After completing all of these activities, the students will
then, using my previously made example as a guide, create a glogster that
has the numbers 1-12 on the top and the name and a picture they find under
each. Also, they will be asked to complete a pre-made handout at the end of
the unit.
E-Evaluate and revise
Before- To assess what the students know about the months of the year, I
will do a little bit of informal questioning individually with each student prior
to instruction. I will ask questions like: Do you know the months of the year?
What month comes before March?
During- Throughout the lesson/unit, I will observe how the students do
during the activities and make notes about concerns or positive things I see
in the class.
After- To evaluate the students, I will grade their handouts they completed
and give the students the option to either say or sing, or place notecards in
order of the months. This will give me a better grasp on whether the
students got the concepts taught, and which methods worked best by giving
options on how to be evaluated. Then, as a class I will an oral survey asking
them the following questions:
Do you now know the months of the year?
4. Did you enjoy the activities? Which was your favorite? Which did you
not like?
Did I give clear instructions and prepare properly?
