ASSURE Method
Scenario 1
A-Analyze Learners
The learners are a 1st grade class, Special ed, 10 boys, 7 girls, 70% white 20% African-American
and 10% Hispanic. 7 students in the class have mild to severe ADHD (attention deficit
hyperactivity disorder).
S-State Objective
My special needs 1st grade classroom will recite the 12 months of the year in chronological
order by saying them out loud every day, slowly, so they will know how to pronounce them.
They will also learn a song for the months of the year that will be taught step by step, making
sure they understand them every day, along with a calendar, and going over holidays that occur
in these months, by the end of the week with 85% accuracy.
S-Select Methods, Materials, and Media
The materials that will be needed for this lesson will include: a list of the months of the year to
look at, the smart board to help with the words for the song, cd player to play the song, a large
calendar with the months of the year, and paper and crayons for the holiday activities.
U-Utilize Media and Materials
Before class starts, look over all materials; make sure you have everything ready. Play the music
in the CD player, make sure it works. Turn on the smart board and have the lyrics on the screen
ready to go. Have the calendar set up correctly making sure everything is there, and have paper
and crayons set up in centers.
R-Require Learner Participation
To make sure all students are participating, walk around the room and listen to the children as
they say the months of the year. Ask them questions throughout the week like: “What month
comes after March?” As a whole group you will go over the months by reciting them, singing,
going over the calendar with them, and going over holidays that occur during the year. In
centers, they will draw a picture of their favorite holiday, and write a sentence about what
holiday it is, when it occurs, and why they like it.
2. E-Evaluate and Revise
During the week as you go through the months of the year, make sure everybody is
participating with all of the activities. If some aren’t getting it down, go over it slowly with the
whole group so everybody gets it. To assess them play a game where they stand in a circle and
one student starts by saying the first month and then the next student says the month that
comes next. If they get it wrong, they sit down. If they get it right, they stay standing.
