3. Introduction
We are given an assignment that involves three modules, which are
Measurement 1, Building Materials and Construction Technology 1. All of us are
required to write a report for our construction site visit.
The site visit was held on 23rd November 2016(Wednesday). Lecturers have
briefed us about the safety precaution which we need to obey. Among the
precautions are we need to dress appropriately by wearing long pants with collar t-
shirt, sports shoes with socks and most importantly is wearing safety helmet on site.
The construction site is located at Taman Impian Murni(Lot 3607), Jalan
Tanjung Balai(Lorong Haji Yusof) Seksyen 30, 40460 Shah Alam, Selangor. This
project is to construct 42 units 2&3 storey terrace with land size of 20'x63'. The
contractor of the project is Purcon Group.
The purpose of the site visit is to expose us so that we are able to describe,
explain and understand the method and process of construction in
accordance to the sequence of work on site.
4. Objective
To understand the practical aspect of construction techniques in comparison
to theory in the books and its application on site.
To understand the basics of the construction process.
To observe the usage of construction equipment on site including mechanical
plants.
To explore and identify types of building materials and construction
technology used on site.
To expose us the working environment as a Quantity Surveyor and be able to
deal with some uncertain circumstances such as weather.
To be aware of the importance of safety on site and understand the safety
problems and site conditions.
To broaden our horizon with the latest technology used in construction.
To give us an opportunity to understand the significance of communication
skills while working together as a construction team.

Item in the site that are considered as a concrete frame
Concrete frame building are the most common type of modern building. This
type of building consists of a frame of concrete. The items to be considered that are
considered as a concrete frames in the sites are beams, column and slab.
Horizontal members of the concrete frame are called beams. There are two
types of beam namely suspended beam and non-suspended beam. Suspended beam
are located on the upper floor. Non- suspended beam which also known as ground
beam are used to support brick.
Moving on, the vertical members of the concrete frame are called column.
Column is designed to withstand compressive loads. Column is the most significant
part of the building as it carries the primary load of the building. For example, if you
damage a beam in a building, it will usually affect only one floor, but if damage to a
column could bring down the entire building.
Besides that, a flat plate of concrete that human can walk on it is called slabs.
Suspended slabs are above ground and supported by beams whereas non-
suspended slabs sit on the ground directly.
6. Materials involved in constructing concrete framed
structure
The concrete used for the whole concrete frame structures is grade 25.
Concrete is a composite materials composed of aggregate bonded with fluid cement
which hardens over time. The ratio of cement to sand to coarse aggregate for
concrete grade 25 is 1:1:2. The grade of the concrete refers to the compression
strength resistance for 28 days. Concrete grade 25 is considered standard concrete.
Concrete in the building trade actually mean reinforced concrete. The full
name of it is reinforced cement concrete(RCC). RCC is concrete that contains steel
bars which also known as reinforcement bar or rebar. This combination works well
as the concrete is very strong in compression, easy to produce at site and affordable.
To make reinforced concrete, one must makes a mould called formwork that
will contain the liquid concrete and give it in the form or shape we need. Secondly,
one should look at the structural engineer’s drawings and places in the steel
reinforcement bar and ties them in place using wire. Once the steel is in place,
concrete is prepared by mixing the cement, sand, aggregates according to the ratio
of certain concrete grade. Concrete will harden in hours but takes months to achieve
its full strength. During this time, concrete must be supplied with water on its
surface.
15. Conclusion
After the site visit, I have gained some valuable knowledge that we can’t
learn from the textbooks and lectures. I have fully understood the practical aspects
of construction techniques in comparison to theory in the books and its application.
It is more tougher than I thought. Moreover, I have learnt how a construction site
works after the site visit. I have seen various type of tools and equipments used on
site. We were taught by the site contractor about the usage of those equipments.
Besides, I’mable to identify and differentiate types of building materials used
in construction. Through the site visit, I have better understanding about the
working environment as a Quantity Surveyor. They work under uncertainty
circumstances. They need to be careful about the working environment as risks exist
everywhere on site.
Furthermore, I had the opportunity to witness how the construction team
emphasis the safety on the construction site. Safety is their top priorities. Every
workers need to wear safety helmet on site. Even visitors like us need to obey the
rule. This is to ensure our safety during our site visit.
I have learnt that communication skills is crucial. As a construction team, we
need to communicate and works together so that the project can be carried out
smoothly. Teamwork is also an essential element in construction.
We only learn the new knowledge by memorizing those important points due
to our exam-oriented education system. Because of this we can’t experience the real
life working. So through the site visit, we can learn something that we can’t get from
books.
The site visit have brought tons of benefits to me. I am very grateful to have a
chance to site visit. I wish I could have more of this kind of opportunities in the
future as it can prepare a better me for my working in the future.
