1. 1
Introduction
First of all, in this assignment, we were required to produce a report
on the construction site visit for combination of 3 subjects which are
Measurement 1, Construction Technology 1 and Building Materials.
The site visit located at The Andes Construction Site (Address: Jalan
Mas 1, Bukit Jalil, 58200 Kuala Lumpur). The Andes is the name of
freehold development. Located in the borderline between Puchong
and Bukit Jalil. It is expected to be completed construct in 2018. This
property is under the helm of Villamas, and it is made of two
residential unit types, condominium and villa terrace.
The Andes has a good population location because it is surrounded by
various features such as shopping malls (Giant, Tesco, IOI Mall),
schools and institutions (Taylor’s Lakeside Campus, Sunway
University, Monash University), and medical facilities (Sunway
Medical Center).

Objective
To understand the basic of construction process, demonstrate a
systematic and orderly mind.
To broaden our horizons with information of the newest
construction technology used in construction industry.
To help us on knowledge for the preparation for being a
quantity surveyor.
To observe the usage and function of the construction
equipment commonly used on construction site.
To make us aware of the importance of safety and
understanding of safety problem and site condition.

Technical Observation
We arrived at the construction site in the morning around 9.00 a.m.
On the way to the construction area, we observed what was around
the site. According to the information board below, we can know the
contractor of the building is Villamas and several detailed
information of the building. According to the project manager of the
site, they are currently which cost roughly, RM2.5 million.
Firstly, the project manager gave a little briefing about the
construction site safety and also explanations about the site remind
us to put the safety at firs the first place. Then, he showed us the
documents of the construction sure as progress sheet, plan, and also
some drawings. He told us that the construction site is divided into
three phases, the first phase of the site, which was located upon
entrance of the site, had its work below lowest ground floor level
completed and the contractors was working on the construction of
the basement carpark of the condominium.

After the briefing, we separated into 7 to 9 students a group with a
guide to walk us through the site and also explain the structure,
progress, material, equipment in the site.
During the site visit, I observed that the contractors was working on
structural element, which is also known as substructure; such as
foundations, columns, and beams. The reinforcement bars that used
for columns is Y12, Y16 and Y32, for the concrete part, used of
reinforced in-situ concrete Grade 40.

For the second phase of the construction site, I observed that the
workers were working on the foundation of the building. The
foundation used in the construction site is Piled Foundation. It is
suitable for weak and unstable soil, multi stories buildings.
I do observed that, there were lesser workers working on the second
phase of the construction site compare to the basement carpark.
There are several construction equipment and mechanical plants.

the construction site.

Piled Foundation
Advantages Disadvantages
Very strong foundation. Not suitable for low rise
buildings.
Able to support superstructure. Very expensive for construction
& material.
Pile Cap are very effective to
distribute load among piles &
provide rigidity to column
support.
It waste useful excavated space
& resulting heavy back filling to
get a floor. (increase in costing)
Piles can be made in advanced
and used on site.
Driven pile are not suitable in
soils of poor drainage qualities.

Lastly, currently the progress of the third phase is removing water
from the water table by using water suction pump while waiting for
the piled foundation after cleared he huge amount of water. I also do
notice that most of the reinforcement bar in the construction site are
Y12, Y16, Y20, and Y32.
Last but not least, at the ending part of the site visiting the guide
showed us the piling plan of the construction for The Andes and also
explained to us that they have constructed the biggest pile cap with
huge of concrete which is 24BP1200A.

Reinforced Concrete
Advantages Disadvantages
Reinforced concrete has a high
compressive strength compared
to other building materials.
The tensile strength of
reinforced concrete is about
one-tenth of its compressive
strength.
Due to the provided
reinforcement, reinforced
concrete can also withstand a
good amount tensile stress.
The cost of the forms used for
casting RC is relatively higher.
Can be easily moulded to any
shape required, it is widely used
in precast structural
components. It yields rigid
members with minimum
apparent deflection.
The main steps of using
reinforced concrete are mixing,
casting, and curing. All of this
affect the final strength.
Fire and weather resistance of
reinforced concrete is fair.
Shrinkage causes crack
development and strength loss.

Reflection
This is my first time for site visit. I feel very excited while the first
step going in to the construction site. In this site visit I have gained a
lot of new and interesting technology knowledge and experiences. I
have also learnt the importance of team work and leadership
between the workers for constructing a building.
Through the site visit, I was able to understand and have a clearer
vision of what I have learnt in class. Such as the steps to constructing
a building, types of foundation use in site, materials and
equipment’s, roles involving in a construction, types of
reinforcement bar and concrete, structural of a building.
Lastly, I would like to thanks my lecturers Ms Ang, Ms Azrina, and Ms
Aishah were guiding me throughout the whole semester in
Measurement 1, construction Technology 1 and Building Materials.
What we have learnt now, is for the future in our working in
construction industry apply what we have learnt in to working in the
future.
