1. The document summarizes a site visit report for a 3-story electrical substation construction project.
2. Key aspects observed included reinforcement bars, formwork construction, concrete blocks used as spacers, excavation equipment, scaffolding, and oil plinths to prevent transformer explosions.
3. The site visit provided valuable practical experience in understanding construction processes, materials, and challenges compared to classroom learning.

1.Objective
The objectives of the site strip of this project are:
- To have a better understanding of the basics of the construction process.
- To gain more knowledge about the practical aspect of the construction
techniques in comparison to the theory aspect in books and its application on
the site.
- To have an experiment to actual working environment on site including
uncertainty circumstances in weather condition.
- To have the ability to communicate with the construction team members on
site and to see the importance of teamwork in the building team.
- To have witness the usage of construction equipment on site including
mechanical plants.
- Able to explore and identify various types of building materials and
technology on site.
- To aware about the importance of safety on site and understanding of safety
problems and site conditions.
- Able to recognize the items measurable for sub-structure and reinforced
concrete frame works.
- To study a systematic approach to take-off quantities from drawings for the
preparation of Bills Quantities for substructure and reinforced concrete
frame works.
- To demonstrate a systematic and orderly mind and be able to visualize the
drawings and details given for substructure and reinforced concrete frame
works.

2.Introduction
The site visit is held on the Friday of 21th of June 2013. This site trip is
organized by our Measurement 1 lecturer, Miss Ang Fuey Lin. The project for
this site trip is about a 3 storey high electrical substation construction site which
located in PMU Subang Jaya, Town Centre. It is a gas insulator switch gear
(GIS) which used for transmission-level voltages which save space with a
higher of equipment cost.
Based on the project information board outside of the construction site, the
owner of this project is Tenaga Nasional Berhad. The architect of this project is
SoonChai Architect. The civil, structure and mechanical engineer is J&A
Associates Sdn.Bhd. The contractor is KP Synercies Berhad and Transgrid
Ventures Sdn Bhd Consortium.
The foundation of the building is built using precast 300mm² reinforce concrete
pile. The length of this building is 66m, width is 40m and the height is 33m.
This substation building is built using conventional method and no Idustrialised
Building System (IBS).

3.Technical Observation
On the 21st
of June, Miss Ang Fuey Lin arranged us to the construction site trip.
This site trip is very interesting because this is about a 3 storey electrical
substation which I never been before although I visited a few of construction
site. There are approximate 50-60 students going to the site trip and it is divided
into 2 groups. The first group will be ready in the site around 8.45am and
another group is 9.45am. I was distributed in the second group.
When I first reach the site, the site personnel, Mr. Peter brief us about the site
and safety precautions of site. Not only that, he gives a brief explanation on the
project and what is used in the project. The first thing I saw when we walk into
the construction site is the bar bending yard. I saw two types of reinforcement
bars which is high tensile steel rod and mild yield steel bars are arranged
separately according to their types and the diameters. I saw a bar bending
machine there which located near the reinforcement bars.
After that, I proceed to the carpenter yard. Many timber are placed in the
carpenter yard which the formwork are made .Then, I saw some tofu like
concrete blocks which are arrange at the side of the construction site. The
concrete blocks have been shape and cut into pieces. According to Mr. Peter,
this concrete blocks can be known as concrete spacer or concrete cover which
give the reinforcement bars space to concrete. Reason is to prevent rusting of
the reinforcement bars.
I saw a few excavators in the site which used to excavate in the site. I saw the
oil barn/plinth. According to Mr. Peter, oil barn/ plinth are to prevent the
transformer to explode. There is steel bonding attached to the column to prevent
cracking and provide better bonding.

Last but not least, Scaffolding and supporter of scaffolding used to support the
building and formwork of the beam which may not cause any leakage of
concrete or changes in size. Formwork at the soffit of the first floor can be seen
too.

5.Conclusion
After visiting the site, I truly understand the situation of site visit including the
scorching of sun and the dust in the site. It is a lot tougher than what I thought
compared to the life of studying in the university. I have seen many things in
the site which normally I encountered to measure in classes. Besides, I have
gain experience staying patient under the hot weather which I never learn in
class.
During the 1 semester of school life, I only learn new knowledge by
memorizing SMM clause and sometimes don’t even know what the structure
looks like is. But throughout this site visit, it gives me more understanding
about the structure like. Not only that, I also gained quite many of knowledge
about the basic of construction process, teamwork between members, the usage
of machinery equipment, can differentiate the type of buildings materials used
in the construction site.
Lastly, I really think that this site visits benefits a lot in terms on subject and for
my future as it prepare me to overcome many upcoming problems. This would
also have more practical knowledge as it gives me preparation for the future as
a successful quantity surveyor.
