Chapter 24
Chapter 24 Industry Comes of Age, 1865 1900 I. The Iron Colt Becomes an Iron Horse
1. Railroads began being built much more following the Civil War going from 35000 miles of track in
1865 to 192,556 miles in 1900 o Railroads were granted land by Congress
 Lands were kept from all other users while railroad companies discussed which lands for optimal
for railroads which stemmed from the original system of checker board distribution of land to the
companies
1. This was put to an end in 1887 by Cleveland
2. Towns and cities sprang from lands where railroads were built and those that were far from
railroads became ghost towns
II. Spanning the Continent with Rails

Railroad Consolidation and Mechanization
1. These newer western railroads were backed by the older eastern ones like the one under Cornelius
Vanderbilt, New York Central
2. New Tech: steel rails that were stronger than iron, Westinghouse air brakes, Pullman Palace Cars
which were the premiere cars that had telegraphs and block signals o Despite these advancements,
death via train accidents were pretty common
V. Revolution by Railways
1. These new railroads glued the country together thus creating a massive new market and loads of
jobs contributing to the industrialisation of the US. Said industrialisation helped along mining and
agriculture and brought supplies to the people that worked in said industries
2. The Great Plains, previously inhospitable, were now being populated
3. Time zones were first introduced on November 18, 1883 due to these railroads as opposed to each
city having its own time zone
4. The first millionaires arose from this era of railroads
VI. Wrongdoing in Railroading
1. The Gould scandal involved embezzlement of stocks from the Pacific, Texas, Union Pacific, Kansas
Pacific, and Erie railroads
2. Stock watering The over inflation of stock worth to sell for massive profit
3. The public were abused, judges and legislatures bribed, lobbyists pressured, rebates were given
which helped the rich, and free passes used to look good in the press; in addition,

Robert Pierce, Commonly Referred To As Bob, Was Born In
Robert Pierce, commonly referred to as Bob, was born in Fort Dodge, Iowa in 1914. In his youth, his
family moved to Southern California, where he would stay through college. Pierce went to Pasadena
Nazarene College to prepare for ministry. In the mid 1930s, Pierce worked as a traveling evangelist in
California. Later, he settled in Los Angeles and got connected with the Youth for Christ movement. He
became a full time traveling evangelist for Youth for Christ in 1947. This position allowed him the
opportunity to go to Asia to evangelize to them American military serving there.
In 1947, Pierce left for China. During this trip, he met a teacher named Tena Hoelkedoer. Tena

In 1970, Pierce founded another ministry, Samaritan s Purse. The purpose of Samaritan s Purse is to
meet emergency needs in crisis areas through existing evangelical mission agencies and national
churches. In 1973, Pierce met Franklin Graham. At this time, Graham was a young student with a
heart for missions. Graham reached out to Pierce and began to desire to hear all of his mission stories.
Pierce shared his experience with Graham and became like a mentor to him. Graham was inspired,
and in 1975, Pierce and Graham went on a tour to see the world s neediest places ( About Us ). It was
on this trip that Graham s heart was exposed and called to meeting the needs of the people in these
locations. This conviction was similar to the one that Pierce experienced on his trip to Asia and for this
reason he would eventually go into the same type of work that he was doing with Pierce.
Robert Pierce died in 1978 of leukemia. Only a year after his death, Franklin Graham took over and
became the President and Chairman of the Board of Samaritan s Purse. Both World Vision and
Samaritan s Purse are still active ministries today. The story of Robert Pierce shows that one person s
conviction can manifest itself in powerful ways. Robert Pierce was not only a great evangelist, but he
was a profound leader who understood the importance of connecting and building relationships with
those around him. Pierce shows an excellent example of networking with organizations and

Archetypes In Kingsolver s The Bean Trees
Because flowers go in cycles of life and death, we can look to them as archetypes. The cycle is really
closely related to the circle which is a very prominent archetype in the world today and the past. The
other thing I think of when I hear the word flowers is gardens. When I looked for the garden archetype
I found that gardens symbolize love and fertility (YourDictionary 2). Flowers and gardens also have
many symbols associated with them depending on who you ask.
Missy and her mother are shelling peas together talking about Missy getting a job (Kingsolver 5). This
section reminds me of when I shelled peas with grandma. There aren t any bean plant specific
archetypes but the color green symbolizes earth and growth (YourDictionary 3). Shelling beans can
constitute a change. In the book The Bean Trees this means that Missy is likely going to come out of
her shell and show who she really is. This foreshadows a little about how likely she is going to start a
life of her own and leave. This use of the symbol really adds to the story because it shows a growth of
the main character early on. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When I think of the marigold I think of the time when I was a child and I loved to see marigolds. They
remind me of grandma s house and the beauty of the garden. When I looked it up I found that the
marigold is the flower that is most associated with the desire for riches (Month 2). By the end of the
book Missy is still interested in riches, but it s different than we would expect. Missy is interested in
the riches of knowing and raising a child who she loves and cares for. This adds depth to the story
because there is a drastic difference between the beginning riches and the riches at the end of this

Analysis Of Staying Awake By Ursula Le Guin
Many students in today s world are becoming lazy. As time is there, students find ways to cheat, and
lessen their work load through unethical approaches. There are multiple stories from teachers that can

Staying Awake: Notes on the Alleged Decline of Reading , in this article she emphasizes the various
forms that reading is integrated in the modern world, when it really shouldn t be a part of the reading
category. Le Guin goes through the entertainment media list, from internet to TV, during that time she

Malesic shares his own personal experience as an English teacher at a college just how often students
are willing to plagiarize their papers. He talks about the first time he was offended by the student that
did this, and thought that it was his fault, but as he consolidated with other teachers, he learned that
plagiarism isn t as rare as he considered. Many of his colleagues told different stories of the times that
they have caught plagiarism throughout their career. He tells his story about the various causes of why
this happens everywhere. Malesic comes up with that students think that they know everything there is
about reading and writing, however, in order to plagiarize, the person has to have exceptional skills in
English, which they often do not, and it is a dead giveaway. Just because he was hurt by plagiarizing,

NETW240 Shell Scripting Class Project Guide
Shell Script Project Paper Guidelines
Shell Scripting Project Paper Guidelines
UNIX system administrators write shell scripts to automate repetitive administrative tasks that would
otherwise take up a large portion of their daily work schedule. For example, a shell script can be
written to perform the nightly system backup. The script can be scheduled in crontab to execute after
hours when the system is not being used. The shell script benefits the company and administrator
since a trip back to work later in the evening is unnecessary.
Many other system administration tasks can be automated to relieve the administrator of having to ...

The report will be automatically e mailed to the administrator each morning before the start of
business.
Since Linux is free UNIX, anyone is free to use and modify any UNIX shell script developed by
another person or group and posted on the Web. This is what makes Linux such a powerful tool.
Anyone can develop scripts (tools) and then share them with everyone else in the Linux community.
In this manner, scripts are shared, modified, and made more powerful as they progress through
different user environments.
The DeVry book entitled, Rules of Thumb A Guide for Writers, should be consulted for information
on using APA style to cite references and sources of research information. A sample shell script project

Plant Species Observation Paper
To gather a comprehensive collection of the plant species found on the SCICON property.
Observations will be made of plant associations, slope and soil conditions. The results will aid us in
determining vegetation composition and create vegetation profiles of the area.
Tulare County, with the exception of the National Parks, has one of the least known floras in
California. Since much of the valley floor has been converted to agricultural purposes and the foothills
dedicated to ranching, there have been few botanical surveys performed. Evidence of gaps in
collections are glaring when one references the site localities of collections in the Cal Flora website.

Distinctive patterns of plant distribution are evident at the SCICON facility. Riparian habitats
associated with Bear Creek show high diversity and are well represented by plants requiring high
moisture soils such as alders, sycamores, and willows. South and west facing slopes receive the
greatest amount of solar exposure and thus support only plant species well adapted to drought and heat
stress. Quercus douglassii (Blue Oak) appears to be the dominant species in this strongly xeric
environment. North and east facing slopes have a very diverse representation of trees that include
Umbellularia californica (California bay), Quercus wislizeni (live oak) and Aesculus hippocastanum
(horse chestnut). Within these varied environments are found an array of vegetation types listed above
that are named after their dominant species. At SCICON Quercus douglasii (Blue Oak) Woodlands are
the most dominant. Several species collected over the last few months had not been previously

Fire Department Pros Analysis
Introduction
After several years of a hiring freeze, the Fire Department(FD) is seeking to expand its firefighting
personnel ranks by recruiting approximately 1000 candidates to be eventually hired. Currently, the
Fire Department is predominantly male Caucasian of either Irish or Italian descent in a long history of
dedicated fire fighters which goes back generations. Contrastingly, a significant number of minorities
have been unable to meet the expectations of the FD s outdated recruitment practices which lack
standardized procedures hence, few minority (women, African Americans, Hispanics) firefighters.
Now, the city s estimated population is 1 million of which, about 30% are racial of ethnic minorities

Specifically, neutral policies or practices that unevenly or unfavorably effect any protected class
qualifies as employment discrimination (EEOC, n.d.).
In the past, women outperformed all candidates in exams despite failing the physical exams.
Ultimately, more white candidates dominated the civil service list from where appointments came for
years, the few minority candidates that passed never made the hiring list and women were have never
been hired. Based on the FD s statistics, there is compelling evidence indicative of both racial and
gender discrimination against racial minorities and women, in recruitment, testing, selection, hiring
and promotion to support the disparate impact theory (Guerin, n.d.). Therefore, as a representative of
the city, it is my recommendation that the FD cease and desist from sole use of word of mouth
recruitment and the continued use of flawed essay based exams as this would prove a pattern of non
compliance with EEOC along with potential legal recourse (U.S. Department of Justice, 2015, p. 2).
Recruitment campaign improvement recommendations
The essay based questions should be developed by an independent party with assistance from both city
and Fire Commission representatives. Following a literature review section of an International
Association of Firefighters (IAFF) study, it was concluded that the best recruitment technique for
minority recruitment was targeted recruitment consisting of the following (Fox, Hornick,

The Americans with Disabilities Act and the Family and...
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) took effect in 1990 under the auspices of president
George Herbert Walker Bush. This act serves as an extension of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, in a
sense, in that it ensures that those with disabilities could not be discriminated against in much the
same way that people could not be discriminated against on the grounds of sex, race, religion, and
other factors denoted in the former act. A key component of this act is the fact that disabilities
included those related to both physical as well as mental impairment. Although certain conditions
could certainly set a precedent for what constitutes as a disability, disabilities still must be proven on
an individual basis. This act became amended during the presidency of George Walker Bush to give
supplemental protection to workers who are disabled. The critical component of this action is its
ramifications. A number of separate entities in a plethora of industries had to come up with
accommodations to ensure that they were in compliance with this act once it became law. There are
five main aspects of ADA (Linthicum, 1991, p. 1) which include ramifications specific to
telecommunications (Title IV), public facilities (Title III), public entities and transportation (Title II),
and employment (Title I). All of these disparate industries must come up with means in which those
with disabilities can still utilize their products and services. For instances, ADA mandates that

An Overview of Britain in the Early 20th Century Essay
An Overview of Britain in the Early 20th Century
During the early 20th century in Britain, lives for everyone changed dramatically. The population
levels increased. From 1901 1911 the population increased from 42 million to 45 million. This meant
there was an increase in birth and a decrease in death rates.
There were very distinct social divisions. At the top were the upper and upper middle classes. They
earned above £700 a year. They were only 3% of the population yet they earned most the country s
wages. They usually went to public school when young then went onto university. Most would then
join the army. Many went abroad during winter and the London house for the ball season in May.

The working class would get around £50 100 a year. They lived in very small terraced houses cramped
with lots of people. They worked around 10 hours a day from Monday to Friday and six and a half on
Saturday. They had no holidays and small innutritious meals which meant they died younger. The
children would go to work after school and stay in the factory most of their life.
The most popular jobs were domestic, agricultural and in the building trade. The women were the
lowest paid of them all and most worked in the domestic service. The Daily Mail was the cheapest
newspaper at ½ pence.
In those days, Britain was a parliamentary democracy but the House of Lords could block decisions
made by the House of Commons. The system was unfair in that only a few people could vote. By
1906, all men with households could vote but the women couldn t. There were two main parties, the
liberals and the Conservatives. They were mostly supported by richer people. The conservatives
believed in laissez faire, where they leave people to their own problems. The Conservatives believed
that they should leave the rich people to get on with making Britain richer.
The Liberals believed in freedom of the individual and that you had to work hard if you wanted to be
wealthy. This meant that the rich then looked down on the poor as they believed it was their own fault
that they were

How Does Prospero Use Of Power In The Tempest
The text I will be discussing through the course of my essay is The Tempest by William Shakespeare.
It is one of Shakespeare s later works and is considered by many to be the last play that Shakespeare
himself wrote alone. The play begins with a terrible storm or Tempest which strikes a ship carrying
Alonso and his entourage home. The group had just attended the wedding of Claribel s daughter in
Tunis. The passengers of the boat have no choice but to jump overboard and onto a strange island. The
island is inhibited by Prospero who we find out is the rightful Duke of Milan, Prospero was the one
who organised and set in place the storm. We find out that his own brother orchestrated him being

on the island. Prospero berates Caliban calling him a lying slave and emphasises how he attempted to
educate him. Prospero also notes that because of who his mother was he is unfit to live amongst
civilisation. Caliban tells him You taught me language, and my profit on t. Is I know how to curse. The
red plague rid you. For learning me your language. Caliban is telling him that he learnt from Prospero,
so if he does not like the way in which he speaks, he only has himself to blame. He after all taught
Caliban. Prospero does what he knows best and threatens to inflict pain on Caliban if he does not do
as Prospero says and so agrees. Ariel enters playing music, and he brings with him Ferdinand.
Miranda has never set eyes on anybody other than Prospero and Caliban. She falls in love with him
there and then. Ferdinand too falls in love Miranda. Ferdinand reveals himself as the Prince of Naples.
Prospero is delighted they have fallen in love so easily. However he does not want it to be that easy for
them. Prospero accuses him of being an imposter and leads him off to him imprisonment as Miranda
tries to ask her Father to show some compassion. Prospero thanks Ariel who is invisible to all but him
and sends him on yet another errand. He also promises him that he will be set free soon. Prospero

Toronto Road Safety Epidemic
The Toronto Road Safety Commission understands the growing safety epidemic on the streets of
Toronto. The safety of all citizens is our top priority. The problem is not being fully addressed and the
citizens of the city are at risk. Road traffic injuries put a threat on public health and deserve attention
now. On average there is more than one pedestrian death a week. In the first 15 days of 2018 there
have been seven deaths related to the road. This puts the city at a 250% increase since last year
(Toronto Star). Cycle Toronto executive director Jared Kolb reports that there is a pedestrian hit every

the most impact from the crisis (CBCnews). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

teachers to create safe school zones. By implementing change within these groups we can create

The thyroid is one of the most important glands in our body. It produces a thyroid hormone that
influences the metabolism in every single cell in the body. Sometimes the thyroid starts to have
problems and it can cause a lot of symptoms. One of these problems is hyperthyroidism, which is
where the thyroid malfunctions and begins to produce too much thyroid hormone. This causes the
symptoms of nervousness, sweating, heart palpations, nerve tingling, heat intolerance, fatigue,

Graves disease, Hashimoto s disease, tumors, thyroiditis, toxic multinodular goiter or the TSHR gene.

Catch Em All Ethics
Business ethics is referred to implementing ethical standards and moral principles to the actions taken
by humans during any exchange process. Although all companies have ethical standards that must be
followed, unfortunately, not all oblige to these rules. These companies tend to practice unethically,
such as not respecting confidentiality agreements and avoiding legal liability. Furthermore, prior to
beginning digital data collection, the ethics checklist must be followed in order to ensure the safety of
both the company as well as the participants. Data collection can be obtained from observations,

of their safety. Users are so engulfed with the mobile game that they have been led to uncommon

obligation to keep their consumer s safety in mind. In comparison to chapter 8 in our text, Mobile

freedom from harm for their participants. There are two questions that the company should ask itself
while designing the game: Is it impossible to restore the subject to his or her original condition? Has
the subject been exposed to unreasonable stress or risk without his or her knowledge (Hair, Celsi,
Money, Samouel , Page, 2016)? The obvious answer to these questions is yes. When referring to the
incidents, it may be impossible for the players to restore their lives. Also, since the mobile application
tracks your whereabouts, the players are risking their safety without their consent, which has led them
to getting robbed at gunpoint, raped, and even death. Nonetheless, Pokemon Go is unethical by

Assessment of Flamholtz and Management Control Systems Essay
1. Overall Strength: in general, the article provides structure to a concept that is very intangible by: (a)
describing the nature and the functions of control; (b) segregating the MCS into categories: core
control system, organizational structure, and organizational culture; (c) illustrating how to apply the
control model (satisfied my approach) (d) provides a basis for designing and evaluating the system.
The manner, in which the model is presented, with its use of figures, further emphasizes the structure
of the model. See below on further emphasis on parts (a) (c).

This is reverse order is a better match with the schematic representation of MCS (Figure 1) as well as
the pervasive impact culture and structure has on the core control system. This echoes Flamholtz
statement that culture is the starting point of designing the MCS .
Conclusion: As such, the MCS should have been initially detailed using this reverse order for
consistent presentation as well as acting as a catalyst to the planning subsystem of the core control
system. In doing so, goals can be set in accordance to the company culture and structure. This enables
management to influence the behaviour of more employees by providing clear goals. This makes for a
better feedback system because it includes the information of the various departments/divisions and all
levels of employment. This allows for attainable goals and prevents the imposition of unrealistic
goals, MBO, and the likelihood of fraudulent reporting. To further prevent fraudulent reporting, the
measurement subsystem should rely equally on the accounting system as well as non financial
measures (balanced score card).

The Pros And Cons Of Atomic Bombing
The atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki are encased in one of the most controversial
presidential decisions of America s history. The war on the European front was coming to an end, but
Japan still held a firm fighting position against the Allied Powers. With each Japanese island the U.S.
Army seized, American casualties increased. As the supply of American soldiers dwindled, alternative
solutions had to be discussed before proceeding with one of the most costly invasions America would
undertake. America s chief priorities consisted of victoriously ending the war in the shortest time
possible, and saving the most lives Japanese and American alike. The only possible way to meet this
was through the use of atomic energy. If it were ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It was about what could shock the Japanese into thinking their pride meant little to nothing. At this
point, war was no longer about physical strength, but instead about intelligence, and the real fear of
losing everything. With conventional warfare Japan thought they had a chance to win, or at least
severely damage America, no matter how bad Japanese losses were. When an entirely new age of
weaponry was unleashed onto Japan, they simply submitted within a few days. World War II was
officially over, and millions of lives were saved in the process of using atomic energy. Since other
nations gained knowledge of the atomic process, it only made sense for America to use the bomb.
Although the war was over, powerful nations would now be arming themselves to the teeth with new
age atomic weapons, in order to not be vulnerable like Japan. The controversy of whether it was moral
to use the atomic bomb is ill conceived on two aspects: 1. The bomb saved millions of lives despite
the hundreds of thousands that died as a result, and were dying every day to air raids much like Tokyo.
2. Atomic energy was widely known throughout the world, so it was only a race to determine which
nations mastered the process first. There was no other better way America could have handled the
situation without losing the lives of

KPMG Sued by New Century Trustee Over Subprime Lender s Demise
By Sophia Pearson April 2, 2009 00:36 EDT
April 2 (Bloomberg) KPMG International, which oversees the fourth largest U.S. accounting firm,
was sued by the trustee for bankrupt subprime lender New Century Financial Corp. over claims it
failed in its role as gatekeeper.
Negligent audits and reviews by KPMG LLP, the U.S. member firm of KPMG International, led to
New Century s collapse, according to lawsuits filed yesterday in state court in Los Angeles and federal
court in New York. The suits, filed against both KPMG International and KPMG LLP, seek at least $1

KPMG advised New Century to alter the way it calculated reserves for repurchasing mortgage loans
that didn t meet certain conditions, according to the Los Angeles complaint. New Century s
calculations for required reserves were wrong and violated generally accepted accounting principles,
the complaint said.
Mistakes in calculation grew to more than $300 million and repurchase requests soared to $8 billion
once New Century s true financial condition was known, the complaint said. The company could no
longer borrow money to finance its lending business and collapsed owing billions.
Professional Standards
Any claim that we acquiesced to client demands is unsupportable, Ginsburg said. KPMG acted in
accordance with professional standards in New Century, and we will vigorously defend our audit
work.
Last year, a report by bankruptcy court examiner Michael J. Missal concluded KPMG could be
accused of professional and negligent misrepresentation although the firm had possible legal defenses
to such claims. The 581 page report, unsealed in March 2008, didn t conclude that KPMG engaged in
fraud.
Thomas, the trustee s attorney, won a $521.7 million verdict in a similar lawsuit brought by a
Portuguese bank against BDO Seidman, the seventh largest U.S. accounting firm. A jury found in
August 2007 that the firm failed to detect a fraud leading to the collapse of a client of Banco Espirito

A Study On Postpartum Sex Taboo Essay
In an attempt to explain why certain societies have a postpartum sex taboo, anthropologist John
Whiting discovered the statistical association that, Societies with apparently low protein diets tend to
have long postpartum sex taboos (Ember 54). Based off of this association, Whiting went on to
theorize that a long postpartum sex taboo may be an adaptation to tropical environments, particularly
where the major food staples are low in protein (Ember 54). He argued that children in these areas
were prone to the protein deficiency disease called kawashiorkor (Ember 54), so if mothers abstained
from sex for a year, therefore eliminating the possibility of having another child, the first child would
be able to nurse longer and possibly have a lower risk for contracting the disease. In order to test his
theory, Whiting sampled 172 societies (Ember 62) and divided them into a table based off of the
duration the postpartum sex taboo, with a long taboo being anything over a year and short being
anything under. Additionally, he also divided the societies into high, medium, and low protein
societies, with low surviving on root and tree crops (Ember 61), medium on cereal crops (Ember 61),
and high on hunting, fishing, or herding (Ember 61). Personally, when reading about the theory and
analyzing the evidence supporting it, I am accepting of the theory s proposition, but do not support it
entirely, simply because I feel that there should be a bit more convincing evidence.

There has never been and will never be a single universal religion. From the beginning of time people

Orthodox Church believes itself to be the one true religion as practiced in the New Testament. Prior to

churches that included the nature of the Holy Spirit, iconic worship, the celebrations of Easter, and
cultural differences. Roman Catholicism separated itself from the Eastern Orthodox and began its own

They believe that Christ is the Son of God and that he was born of a virgin named Mary. Because
Jesus was born to a human, he himself is fully human and fully divine; the Son of God and the Son of
Man. They believe that Jesus, in his human form, saved the world by teaching the absolute truth of
God. They understand that Jesus forgave the evils of all men and the world; he suffered and died in
innocence, voluntarily and unjustly on the cross in order to be with all who suffer and die.
This belief fits with the teachings from the book of Acts, that Jesus is the universal savior. A
continuation of the gospels of Luke, Acts remains an important book of the Bible in the sense that it
tells about the continuation of the teachings of Jesus passed on by his witnesses; essentially, the
retellings of Jesus stories. These retellings allowed the Christian religion to spread worldwide. The
New Testament, in my belief, has the same impact as Acts. It retells the story about the life of our
savior Jesus Christ and his teachings according to the word of god. It is important for any member of

Research Paper On Abusive Relationships
Abusive Relationships: The Flawed Ideas of Machismo Masculinity
The term abusive relationship brings to mind a relationship of unequal power distribution. The
perpetrator is usually imagined to be the husband in heterosexual relationships and we, generally,
identify the wife as the victim of such cases of abuse.
However, recent findings suggest that it is not always the husband who is the perpetrator. In many
such cases, the dominant abusive figure is the wife. Although abuse exists in both homosexual and
heterosexual relationships, we will be focusing on the latter in this article.
While different forms of abuse against women are reported each year, there seems to a global, societal
taboo on the issue of abuse against men.

In such cases, the victim may feel like he is shielding the children from the abuser. Also, the victim

Of course, we cannot deny that Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) affects more women negatively than
men in the global scenario: archaic laws and customs prevent women from seeking justice in many
countries. Also, while studies have shown that women can be violent in intimate relationships, men
are more likely to injure their partners more grievously than women. Critics of men affected by IPV
argue that this is an anti feminist trend that seeks to undermine the positive strides the world has taken
in acknowledging and attempting to combat domestic violence against women.
However, it is our belief that violence can be perpetrated by anyone in any scenario. The world must

Arizona, California, Nevada, Utah, and New Mexico in 1835. In 1836, Texas was the first Mexican
territory that gained its independence from them. The United States originally believed that another
state would cause major issues because one it wasn t controlled by the government and there was a lot
of unknown politics. Texas was another major slave state and most of the major northern states didn t
believe slavery should be allowed. Another reason was because Mexico consistently threatened Texas
after they gained independence that they would raid the borders and destroy whatever laid in front of

Escalation Of Conflict
The escalation of conflict is not the only problem the increased number of private military contractors
bring. These contractors have a different object and priority than the stationed troops in conflicts. The
contractor s number one priority is protecting their asset, as the private corporations know that if the
important figure they are assigned to protect gets captured or killed, it would be devastating for the
business and most likely they would lose the funding the government provides. Since the priority of
the contractors is to keep the asset safe, they will often be very aggressive, securing perimeters and

The Walking Dead represents fear, betrayal, sacrifice, hope, leadership and, the conflict between good
and bad. Fear, the main theme of the show, followed by sacrifice is portrayed in every episode where
everyone fears where are they going to end the next day, where they find themselves questioning if
that is their last day, scared of losing a loved one and of course, the fear of being eaten by walkers .
Sacrifice, portrayed at its highest, on life or death situations where every character feels torn between
two options that may affect someone in one way or another, as well when someone will die for the
safety of others. Betrayal, one of the most repetitive themes in the show that represents what will a
person do to save himself/herself in a life or death situation, and in this case, each character try to
build up alliances that at the end, they betray their own, which could lead to someone dying or getting
hurt, depending on the situation. Leadership and hope can be put together since in the show, the main
thing that a leader should do is give his/her followers hope that everything can get better, and the show
portrays it every time Rick Grimes try to take matters on his hands for his group, considered as his

The project did not achieve desirable standards as far as customer requirements, scope, environment

should have exercised caution by adopting the software in phases rather than implementing the project
directly, furthermore, execution was the biggest problem, despite knowing that the project needed

that all the staff and management were involved but in this case despite knowing that the project

FoxMeyer should not have implemented the project on the basis of escalation that the project would

The Effects of Agent Orange on Veterans of the Vietnam...
Almost thirty years after the last troops were pulled out of what was then South Vietnam, its effects
are still felt in today s society. It is hard not to find someone who s life has not been affected because
of this war. One of the most controversial decisions made in the war was to use chemicals to fight the
enemy. The most boradly used chemiucal was called Agent Orange. Some people agreed with the use
of Agent Orange. They saw it as a very viable weapon that needed to be used in order to keep the
Communist from taking control of South Vietnam and subverting their democratic government. Many
others disapproved of its use. They knew, correctly, that it would severely devastate the landscape of
Vietnam and would forever ruin the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Agent Orange is a herbicide that was used to defoliate the jungles, meaning the United States military
was trying to kill off the trees in Vietnam in order to take away places for North Vietnamese military
men could hide (1). The Viet Cong did not fight conventionally against the American military, they
could not do so and expect to win. This caused them to resort to guerilla warfare in order to strike and
weaken parts of a division or unit. The Americans used Agent Orange as a defense strategy in order to
take away hiding places for the Viet Cong to run to after hitting the American units (2). What is
especially harmful to those who were around Agent Orange and where it was sprayed was the dioxin,
which is a byproduct of one of the chemicals components. People still worked and breathed even with
the residue of the toxin still in the air and in the soil, civilians and military personnel alike. The toxin
carried in it a carcinogen that got its way into the water and in the soil. Slowly as the years have
passed and Vietnam has been hit with a lot of monsoons clean water has washed away the toxic water,
but not before it entered into the food chain and then started to accumulate into body fat and tissue in

Patience In Macbeth
The seemingly lost virtue of patience happens to be one of the most important qualities to determine a
person s outcome in life. Both main characters in Macbeth and Thank You Ma am struggle to grasp
the importance of patience. However, the results of their flaws of this trait are immensely different.
The stories of Macbeth and Thank You Ma am have strikingly similar themes of needing patience,
despite the different eras in which they were written. In Macbeth, the main character, Macbeth, is
unable to resist the temptation of having the throne, but during this quest he becomes mentally insane.
Early on in the story, he hears of his prophecy to become king. The witches that tell him of this
prophecy say, All hail, Macbeth, that shalt be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His desire to steal the purse was driven by the strong want to buy blue suede shoes. This desire of the
shoes can be compared to Macbeth s desire of the throne. Both characters did evil deeds to reach their
ultimate goal. Roger, however, is unable to successfully steal the purse and learns an important lesson
through his failure. After Roger s failed attempt, the story explains the woman s initial actions, ... she
reached down, picked the boy up by his shirt front, and shook him until his teeth rattled (Hughes, 1).
This quote shows her aggressive behavior that masked her knowledgeable and caring personality.
Roger is made to go back to her house to clean up and have a meal. The theme of patience is learned
during his visit to her house, The woman did not watch the boy to see if he was going to run now, nor
did she watch her purse which she left behind her on the day bed. But the boy took care to sit on the
far side of the room where he thought she could easily see him out of the corner of her eye (Hughes,
3). This quote expresses the amount of respect and trust built by both Roger and the woman in this
short amount of time. She later explains to him that she understands his motive to steal as she has
done wrongful deeds as well. She finished her talk with him by saying, And next time, do not make
the mistake of latching onto

Benefits Of Safe Injections Sites
Many people view safe Injections sites as something extremely controversial. Some people are
completely for the idea of them as well as implementing in their neighborhoods, while others are
extremely against the idea and will do anything they can to ensure that they never make their way into
their neighborhood. That being said, because of the Supreme Court of Canada s decision in the
Canada (AG) v PHS Community Services Society, many more of them will be opening up across
Canada. The Court s decision in the case will have an extremely positive impact on Canada, as proven
through empirical evidence, on vulnerable drug users and addicts, the health and safety of Canada, as
well as legal and constitutional rights of Canadians. Prior to the ... Show more content on

5). The federal Minister of Health, under Stephen Harper s conservative government in 2008, had
failed to extend Insite s CDSA exemption, which brought about (Kennedy, n.d.). The Federal Health
Minster s decision had sparked Insite to go to the many courts that came prior to the Supreme Court,
where Insite argued that their section 7 right of The Charter of Rights and Freedoms had been violated
( Canada (Attorney) , 2011, pg. 5). First, the case went to a trial court in which the judge found that
the application of the CDSA to Insite Violated their section 7 right under the charter, and granted
Insite a constitutional exemption allowing it to continue to operate free from federal drug laws , but
the Court of Appeal dismissed the appeal and held that the doctrine of interjurisdictional immunity
applied ( Canada (Attorney) , 2011, pg. 5). Ultimately, the case was appealed again, but to the highest
court in Canada: the Supreme Court of Canada. The Justices of the Supreme Court of Canada decided,
in a unanimous decision, that not granting Insite an exemption to operate would be constitutionally
unacceptable, and not in the best interest of Canadians. Although the Supreme Court decided this, it
wasn t for the reason of interjurisdictional immunity,

My Egg Autobiography
For my egg I took a piece of cardboard and cut it into a small square. Following that I cut three slits in
the cardboard in the form of a smaller square. I then took small popsicle sticks and put them into the
holes in the cardboard and then hot glued them to the cardboard. To lessen the impact I took rubber
bands and attached them across the cardboard from the popsicle sticks. I also did the same on the top
with the egg in between. I also slowed the fall by creating a parachute. To make the parachute I cut it
out of a trash bag. After cutting the bag I cut six pieces of yarn at eighteen inches each. The I taped the
yarn to the bag at even places on the bag followed by the same on the cardboard. When attaching the

Dividend Policy at Fpl Group Essay
Dividend Policy at FPL Group
FPL Group Overview:
The FPL Group was Florida s largest electric utility group and the fourth largest in America. The FPL
Group had annual revenues of exceeding $5 billion. Florida Power amp; Light Company, the main
subsidiary of the FPL Group had 3.9 million customer accounts and covered a service area that
included six of America s ten fastest growing metropolitan areas.
a. Summarize the key elements of FPL s financial policy and compare it with other relevant firms.
We are commenting on FPL s financial policy from a dividend and capital structure perspective.
FPL has a very high dividend payout ratio of around 90% and has a 47 year streak of dividend
increases. FPL s dividend payout ratio is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This would mean intense competition and may open up FPL to pricing pressure and in an adverse
situation, losses. Such a situation has already been witnessed in California s utility companies post
introduction of retail wheeling in their state.
In light of the situation mentioned above, FPL has to ensure that it has the resources available to meet
future competition where one of the determinants of winning or retaining new business may be price.
Hence, its dividend payout policy must be modified to account for these industry changes.
c. How should FPL choose between dividends and share repurchases as alternative modes of
payment?
The Modigliani Miller clearly postulates that the dividend policy is irrelevant. The value of the assets
of FPL should be independent of the financial structure of the firm. Also, the choice of dividend
payments or share repurchases should not influence the share price as both methods are ways to
distribute cash to the shareholders. However, this is true only in the Modigliani Miller world where
there are no costs related to taxes or financial distress.
In practice, dividend policy will be affected by taxes as tax rates for different categories of investors
will differ. Also, a firm s dividend policy is perceived by the financial markets to be a signaling
mechanism. A cut back in dividends may signify that the firm perceives tough

Lady Sing The Blues Comparison
Overtime the music industry has seen many varieties of artists, genres and songs. With each era that
comes and goes so does the kind of music that is popular during that time period. Even popular artist
become less popular over time. Unfortunately sometimes an artist does not receive their fame until
they are dead and gone. Although they may no longer be the rage of right now an artist will always be
famous for the music they sang and played during their times. Lady Sings The Blues is Billie Holiday
s story from when she was just a young girl up until a certain point in her life. This book is her life
story and gives more insight into what her life was like. Billie Holiday talks about the struggles her
family faces and then the struggles ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In Lady Day At Emerson s Bar And Grill we get one version of Billie which was her almost
completely out of it because she is very badly on drugs. She tells us her stories from parts of her life in
no specific order and they are very mixed. As she tells these stories she gets distracted and goes off
topic often. She even gets up during her performance to go to more drugs and when she comes back
out she is once again a different person. In Lady Sings The Blues she s tells you her stories from
beginning to end never leaving anything out. Billie tells us about her addiction and how sick she was
but she still is always clear about the things she is talking about. Throughout her life story she always
knew what she was doing and where she was going even with her addiction. In Lady Day At Emerson
s Bar And Grill we see Billie Holiday at one of her lowest points in her career. She can hardly stand up
and hold it together. She breaks down many times and sometimes goes on rambling incoherently. In
Lady Sings The Blues we get to imagine Billie at her absolute best. We hear about many of her great
and beautiful performances. During these performances hundreds of people attend, while in Lady Day
At Emerson s Bar And Grill Billie only performs for about 7 people in a not so popular place in

Evaluation Of A Business Project Essay
In general, there are four areas that need to be considered for the end user of this product to have a
pleasant and meaningful interaction with it. First, the structure of the interface. It is critical that the
environment have both flexibility and easy of use. Given that the average user of this project can be
considered to be relatively technically savvy, it is reasonable to provide them with a detailed level of
configuration such that they are comfortable programming in the environment. The editor should have
variety of options for settings as simple as syntax highlighting colors or as complex as text completion
preferences. Second, the manner in which the user interacts with the interface needs to be refined.
Precedents in this space already exist, the iPython Notebook3 being the most popular. This software
functions with an input output format wherein the user works on a block of code and then runs it to
see the result. However, this model has several flaws were it to be used as the format of this project: it
lacks true interactivity the user is constrained to a question and answer model rather than provided
with an inspectable, living code. Third, the manner in which output is displayed has to be given
careful consideration. For example, should the output be constrained to two dimensional
visualizations? It may be that certain data structures are more clearly elucidated in three dimensional
space. Additionally, should the visualized output itself be allowed to

Pierce shared his experience with Graham and became like a mentor to him. Graham was inspired, and in 1975, Pierce and Graham went on a tour to see the world s neediest places ( About Us ). It was on this trip that Graham s heart was exposed and called to meeting the needs of the people in these locations. This conviction was similar to the one that Pierce experienced on his trip to Asia and for this reason he would eventually go into the same type of work that he was doing with Pierce. Robert Pierce died in 1978 of leukemia. Only a year after his death, Franklin Graham took over and became the President and Chairman of the Board of Samaritan s Purse. Both World Vision and Samaritan s Purse are still active ministries today. The story of Robert Pierce shows that one person s conviction can manifest itself in powerful ways. • 4. Archetypes In Kingsolver s The Bean Trees Because flowers go in cycles of life and death, we can look to them as archetypes. The cycle is really closely related to the circle which is a very prominent archetype in the world today and the past. The other thing I think of when I hear the word flowers is gardens. When I looked for the garden archetype I found that gardens symbolize love and fertility (YourDictionary 2). Flowers and gardens also have many symbols associated with them depending on who you ask. Missy and her mother are shelling peas together talking about Missy getting a job (Kingsolver 5). This section reminds me of when I shelled peas with grandma. There aren t any bean plant specific archetypes but the color green symbolizes earth and growth (YourDictionary 3). Shelling beans can constitute a change. In the book The Bean Trees this means that Missy is likely going to come out of her shell and show who she really is. This foreshadows a little about how likely she is going to start a life of her own and leave. This use of the symbol really adds to the story because it shows a growth of the main character early on. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By the end of the book Missy is still interested in riches, but it s different than we would expect. Missy is interested in the riches of knowing and raising a child who she loves and cares for. Based on the FD s statistics, there is compelling evidence indicative of both racial and gender discrimination against racial minorities and women, in recruitment, testing, selection, hiring and promotion to support the disparate impact theory (Guerin, n.d.). Therefore, as a representative of the city, it is my recommendation that the FD cease and desist from sole use of word of mouth recruitment and the continued use of flawed essay based exams as this would prove a pattern of non compliance with EEOC along with potential legal recourse (U.S. Department of Justice, 2015, p. 2). This act serves as an extension of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, in a sense, in that it ensures that those with disabilities could not be discriminated against in much the same way that people could not be discriminated against on the grounds of sex, race, religion, and other factors denoted in the former act. A key component of this act is the fact that disabilities included those related to both physical as well as mental impairment. Although certain conditions could certainly set a precedent for what constitutes as a disability, disabilities still must be proven on an individual basis. This act became amended during the presidency of George Walker Bush to give supplemental protection to workers who are disabled. The critical component of this action is its ramifications. A number of separate entities in a plethora of industries had to come up with accommodations to ensure that they were in compliance with this act once it became law. There are five main aspects of ADA (Linthicum, 1991, p. 1) which include ramifications specific to telecommunications (Title IV), public facilities (Title III), public entities and transportation (Title II), and employment (Title I). All of these disparate industries must come up with means in which those with disabilities can still utilize their products and services. For instances, ADA mandates that telephone companies ... Conclusion: As such, the MCS should have been initially detailed using this reverse order for consistent presentation as well as acting as a catalyst to the planning subsystem of the core control system. In doing so, goals can be set in accordance to the company culture and structure. This enables management to influence the behaviour of more employees by providing clear goals. This makes for a better feedback system because it includes the information of the various departments/divisions and all levels of employment. This allows for attainable goals and prevents the imposition of unrealistic goals, MBO, and the likelihood of fraudulent reporting. • 25. A Study On Postpartum Sex Taboo Essay In an attempt to explain why certain societies have a postpartum sex taboo, anthropologist John Whiting discovered the statistical association that, Societies with apparently low protein diets tend to have long postpartum sex taboos (Ember 54). Based off of this association, Whiting went on to theorize that a long postpartum sex taboo may be an adaptation to tropical environments, particularly where the major food staples are low in protein (Ember 54). He argued that children in these areas were prone to the protein deficiency disease called kawashiorkor (Ember 54), so if mothers abstained from sex for a year, therefore eliminating the possibility of having another child, the first child would be able to nurse longer and possibly have a lower risk for contracting the disease. In order to test his theory, Whiting sampled 172 societies (Ember 62) and divided them into a table based off of the duration the postpartum sex taboo, with a long taboo being anything over a year and short being anything under. Additionally, he also divided the societies into high, medium, and low protein societies, with low surviving on root and tree crops (Ember 61), medium on cereal crops (Ember 61), and high on hunting, fishing, or herding (Ember 61). • 39. My Egg Autobiography For my egg I took a piece of cardboard and cut it into a small square. Following that I cut three slits in the cardboard in the form of a smaller square. I then took small popsicle sticks and put them into the holes in the cardboard and then hot glued them to the cardboard. To lessen the impact I took rubber bands and attached them across the cardboard from the popsicle sticks. I also did the same on the top with the egg in between. I also slowed the fall by creating a parachute. To make the parachute I cut it out of a trash bag. After cutting the bag I cut six pieces of yarn at eighteen inches each. The I taped the yarn to the bag at even places on the bag followed by the same on the cardboard. When attaching the yarn ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Hence, its dividend payout policy must be modified to account for these industry changes. c. How should FPL choose between dividends and share repurchases as alternative modes of payment? The Modigliani Miller clearly postulates that the dividend policy is irrelevant. The value of the assets of FPL should be independent of the financial structure of the firm. Also, the choice of dividend payments or share repurchases should not influence the share price as both methods are ways to distribute cash to the shareholders. • 42. Evaluation Of A Business Project Essay In general, there are four areas that need to be considered for the end user of this product to have a pleasant and meaningful interaction with it. First, the structure of the interface. It is critical that the environment have both flexibility and easy of use. Given that the average user of this project can be considered to be relatively technically savvy, it is reasonable to provide them with a detailed level of configuration such that they are comfortable programming in the environment. The editor should have variety of options for settings as simple as syntax highlighting colors or as complex as text completion preferences. Second, the manner in which the user interacts with the interface needs to be refined. Precedents in this space already exist, the iPython Notebook3 being the most popular. This software functions with an input output format wherein the user works on a block of code and then runs it to see the result. However, this model has several flaws were it to be used as the format of this project: it lacks true interactivity the user is constrained to a question and answer model rather than provided with an inspectable, living code. Third, the manner in which output is displayed has to be given careful consideration. For example, should the output be constrained to two dimensional visualizations? It may be that certain data structures are more clearly elucidated in three dimensional space. Additionally, should the visualized output itself be allowed to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
