Discuss The Four Basic Financial Statement Analysis...
List four basic financial statement analysis procedures, describe how you would calculate each
procedure and discuss why you would use each procedure. Based on your reading and outside
research, please communicate your own understanding of the requirements. Citations and references
are required.
The use of financial statements is to provide individuals, but not a specific group with compressed
financial data showing them the information that pertains to the decision they want to make. They are
also able to see past performance of their company and comparing corporation that is in the same
industry (Edmonds, Tsay, Olds, 2011).
The most basic analytical techniques, vertical, horizontal and ratio analyses provide financial

War, Home, And Patriotism In War Is Kind By Stephen Crane
Many poems about the civil war convey universal themes of the time. Stephen Crane s poem War is
Kind is no different. The poem, War is kind written by Stephen Crane(1871 1900) has three themes
common to civil war literature: Warfare, Home, and Patriotism. This poem s overall theme is about
how war destroys families conversely to the title of War is Kind or the many times which Crane says
War is Kind . The three themes of warfare, home, and patriotism are displayed in many pieces of Civil
War literature consequently making them the universal themes. Firstly is the theme of Warfare and
destruction of families caused by it. To start off with the theme of Warfare is common in many civil
war literature. Do not weep, maiden, for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The definition of patriotism is pride in your country or cause, conversely the war is seen as unpatriotic
because the men seem to be fighting for nothing. Hoarse, booming drums of the regiment, /Little souls
who thirst for fight, /These men were born to drill and die. (Lines 6 8) This adds on to the idea of the
war being unpatriotic by showing that the men were only born to fight, or to Drill and Die
consequently making it seem as if they were fighting just to fulfill their needs. This theme is also seen
in lines 17 18 Swift, blazing flag of the regiment, / Eagle with crest of red and gold, (Lines 17 18)
This flag is a very simple representative of death and illness using the colors it did. This all helps to
result in the patriotic theme of the poem by giving us a representation of how unpatriotic the war was.
To conclude the poem War is Kind By Stephen Crane includes three universal themes commonly seen
in many examples of civil war literature. The themes of warfare, war on the home front, and patriotism
occur in the poem as well as many other pieces of civil war literature. The overall theme of the poem
is how war is cruel and unkind making the poem seem like mockery to those who believe war is

How Does Holden Caulfield Change
The change of Holden Caulfield
Holden s parents as it seemed in the book they didn t necessarily fill the large role of parenthood.
holden from a young age wasn t given all the attention he needed as a young child . his parents loved
him but just weren t present in his life because of the working obligations they had. We can see this
when Holden says and what my lousy childhood was like, and how my parents were occupied and all
before they had me and all.. (Salinger 1). We can see a clear absence of his parent s figures when he
gets kicked out of boarding school and they didn t find out until he had the mental break down. At this
point, it is clear that Holden Caulfield has an underlying mental condition. He failed out of four
schools; ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is clear to me that Holden has well I wouldn t say communication problems but very close to it. I
see that when he goes on the date with Sally Hayes it exhibited his difficulty at cooperating with
others. At first, he gives us a dire impression of Sally, I wasn t too crazy about her, but I d known her
for years. (slainger105) I see that holden doesn t want to necessary express himself and suppress his
feeling and affection to seem he is tough. I would implore holding to go out in the world and act like
how he really is and not to make a fake false persona of himself. Holden is suspended between
adulthood and childhood. Several of his actions and words show evidence of his confusion between
adults and children. Admitting to his immaturity, Holden says, I was sixteen then, and I m seventeen
now, and sometimes I act like I m about thirteen. (Salinger 9) Sunny, the prostitute is an example of
Holden s attempt to be an adult, but realizing he is stuck in childhood. You see my son is really trying
to be someone he is not and I think that his school life has an important role in that.
When holding attended pencey prep he always wanted to not be the one standing out see he would
join clicks so he wouldn t get bullied because my son is a pacifist. I would have to take Holden out of
school a probably homeschool him because I think interaction with high school children is not
necessarily right for him. I mean yes interaction is necessary but not in an environment where 15 18
year olds feel like they rule. I understand that Holden has a strong relationship with his sister so I
would continue to make him interact with her and care for her because seemingly that brings him

Violence Simulated Video Games
Still think violent video games are harmless and fun? Consider putting down the remote control and
listen up. December 14th, 2012. At Sandy Hook Elementary School a day of learning was interrupted
by the sounds of gun shots. That day 20 year old Adam Lanza shot over 20 children between the ages
6 7. Such a horrific event that had a cause of what seems an everyday occurrence to teens and kids.
Violence simulated video games. These games can cause a negative mindset that violence is okay.
Look at the Sandy Hook Shooting, the murderer was proclaimed to play too many video games. That
is just one example of how these video games can create that ambiguous mindset that violence is just a
game. Let alone it also shows how the influence of constant ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Others may argue the fact that videogames don t harm anyone outside the game. Considering the facts
of murders and school shootings with the potential cause by video game playing, the stakes are high
that video games are truly a danger to others. Just as in the article High Jinks: Shootout this school is
contributing to make this simulation as realistic as they can. The school has students contributing to
fight to the death, by killing other classmates for a earnings of money. Not only is this provoking
students to act out, also a reward earned for such violence creates a harmful outcome in the students
minds. Though this game only consist of fake weapons and or water guns, this game can also be very
dangerous. The game takes place in the environment including others who don t participate in the
games. At one point a student gets to the point of chasing down a student to the airport, and as there
overall motive to kill the student there were after. These students are now using bath toys, later they
can be overcome with the idea that violence is just a game, continuing in some kind of upgrade to a
real weapon. Surely with this idea harm can come to others. Let alone the environment is too realistic.
By being under that influence that the violence is game, this can be harmful to those teens. The issue
is especially relevant today, because the games are more realistic and bloodier than ever, and because
most american boys play them at some point. A psychologist at Brock University in Ontario found that
longer periods of violent game playing among high school students predicted a slightly higher
numbers of such incidents (schoolyard fights with peers) over time. This can show the impact that can
be made on others in the same environment as the violent video game

Abraham Lincoln s Second Debate
In the effort to secure their own appointments to the U.S. Senate, Abraham Lincoln and Stephen
Douglas squared off in a series of seven debates in 1858. In the 1850s, America was facing a political
crisis, and slavery was threatening to tear the nation apart. There were seven debates that took place
between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas. The two candidates for Senate challenged the other s
ideas about many topics but the most import was, slavery and its future in the United States. Before
the first debate took place, Abraham Lincoln addressed a crowd in Chicago, which is known famously
as the House Divided Speech. In his speech, Lincoln attacked the doctrine of popular sovereignty. He
said that it had clearly failed in its goal of ending ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
From August 21 until October 15, Stephen Douglas battled Abraham Lincoln in face to face debates
all around the state. The prize they sought to win was a seat in the Senate. The debates were to be held
at 7 locations throughout Illinois. During the debates, Douglas still advocated popular sovereignty,
which meant to maintain the right of the citizens of a territory to permit or prohibit slavery. It was, a
sacred right of self government, or so he said. Lincoln proceeded to point out that Douglas s position
directly challenged the Dred Scott decision. This in which decreed that the citizens of a territory had
no such power. In what became known as the Freeport Doctrine. Douglas replied that whatever the
Supreme Court decided was not as important as the actions of the citizens. If a territory refused to
have slavery, no laws, no Supreme Court ruling, would force them to permit it. Over and over again,
Lincoln made that point that a house divided could not stand. Douglas refuted this by saying that the
founders, left each state perfectly free to do as it pleased on the subject. Lincoln felt that blacks were
entitled to the rights enumerated in the Declaration of Independence, which include life, liberty, and
the pursuit of happiness. Douglas argued that the founders

Finding Emergency Housing After A Fight Essay
From trying to find a place to get her mother in law s hair permed to having to find emergency
housing after a fight erupted between two seniors (sisters, no less) over dentures to spending
Christmas in the emergency room instead of the living room, Gail s firsthand experience shows how
sticky it can get when you are in charge of your parents.
The book is divided into 60 vignettes followed by questions, including Surviving the Annual Family
Reunion, To Tube or Not to Tube, That Is the Question, and When I Will Means I Won t.
Gail, who also speaks and holds workshops on aging, says the questions get people thinking about
their own situations.
One problem is most people think they are going to just up and die. That s like 10 percent of people
now, she says. This means that most of us will end up needing care provided by others at some point,
like it or not. It s the best of all worlds when you are willing to broach it before the crisis, Gail says.
What it brings up if you wait is more fear. Death is undergirding everything to talk about.
Like Amy, Gail says a meeting is best. The first thing is to bring family together after a letter or a
phone call to tell them it s time to talk about end of life issues. She also suggests using a facilitator,
like a geriatric care manager, nurse or social worker who will cover the basics because, sometimes,
parents will refuse to talk.
And siblings may not be on the same page. During these emotional times, Having ground

Lipase Lab Report
The enzyme lipase, is present in one s body, specifically found in an individual s pancreas, mouth, and
stomach. Lipase uses separate fats to break down any consumed foods, so that they can proceed and
be absorbed in the intestines. The body typically produces lipase naturally but in some cases, people
may need to use lipase supplements to assist them in digesting food. The test to measure the lipase
enzyme levels in your body is sometimes known as serum lipase. This test measures the amount of

Master Visconti s Ntoni By Giovanni Verga
Master Visconti s Ntoni After World War II Italy was in shambles, and the rural nation struggled to
close the developmental gap between itself and other European nations. It was during this time, in
1948, that Luchino Visconti filmed La Terra Trema, or The Earth Trembles, on the island of Sicily. It
was a critically acclaimed adaptation of I Malavoglia, or The House by the Medlar Tree, written by
Giovanni Verga in 1881. Life on the island as depicted by Verga had barely changed in the
approximate 70 years between the two works, and Visconti filmed in a true neorealist style, recruiting
nonprofessional Sicilians to act out their own lives in their own native tongue. While Visconti s
political messages change the meaning of the story, he succeeds in capturing the never ending struggle
of the oppressed working class, and the futility of disjointed revolt. In many respects, Visconti did not
stay true to many aspects of Verga s novel. His film leaves out most of the supporting characters in the
book, depicting the people of Trezza as considerably less sympathetic to the main characters, a stark
contrast to the energetic community painted by Verga. Visconti wanted to portray the Valastros as a
family against the world, betrayed and abandoned as soon as they challenged the social norms.
Visconti also featured Ntoni, as opposed to his grandfather Master Ntoni, as the main protagonist in
the film. Master Ntoni s belief in fate and his strong conviction in the self possession of

Stump Grinding
A Few Things To Know About Stump Grinding If you ve worked hard the last few weekends
chopping down a tree in your yard, you now have to decide what to do about the stump. Digging a
stump out of the ground is difficult work, if it is even possible. You could pull it out with a truck, but
then you have to dispose of the big stump. The most efficient and easy way to get rid of a tree stump
in your yard is to grind it. Here is some more information. Deciding On DIY Or Professional Removal
If you only have one stump to grind, you might as well hire a tree service professional and save
yourself the trouble of renting a grinder and doing the work yourself. Renting a grinder for the day
costs about the same as having a professional remove one tree. If you re trying to save money, then
you ll want to get a quote. The price depends on the size of the tree, its location, and the type of tree
since trees have wood of varying hardness. The only time it might make sense to rent a grinder is if
you have multiple small to medium stumps to grind and you re capable of working ... Show more

The best scenario is to have the main roots ground away several inches below the soil. This helps keep
the tree from sending up shoots and growing back. It also makes room for new tree roots to grow if
you plan to put in another tree. There are different types of stump grinders on the market. If you rent
one, you may be limited to a small model that isn t capable of grinding deep into the roots. Some
commercial stump grinders fit on tractors or trucks and can chew up stumps all the way down to the
main roots a few feet into the ground. Consider what you plan to do with the space once the tree is
gone when determining how to handle the roots. If you decide on shallow grinding, then you ll want to
watch the space and cut back shoots when they appear so a new tree doesn t start growing where you
don t want

Building Organizational Capacity For Change
Introduction Organization capacity for change as discussed in William Judge s book, Building
Organizational Capacity for Change, includes eight dimensions trustworthy leaders, trusting followers,
capable champions, involved middle management, systems thinking, communication system,
accountable culture, and innovative culture (Judge, 2011). Recognizing the need for change and
initiating change are two different elements, knowing that a change needs to happen but not having the
organizational capacity to make the change will stall any initiative in its tracks. A leader influences
whether or not an organization has the capacity for change, and as discussed by Judge, (2011) one of
the most important influences is being a trustworthy leader. A leader also needs to recognize when a
change is needed and be ready to initiate that change.
Monitoring and Responding to the Drivers of Change Drivers of change include, to name a few,
technology trends, state of the economy, globalization, and customer expectations. These drivers are
going to look and feel different across industries and will be dependent on other drivers such as
competition and industry trends. Monitoring for these changes include understanding the current
technology, attending conferences that provide insight to the newest or upcoming technology
advancements in your industry. This may also be accomplished through professional associations and
contacts. Current state of the economy will

The Importance Of The Charter Of Rights And Freedom
The Charter of Rights and Freedom is a part of the Canadian Constitution which is a set of laws with
basic rules that run our country. Before the Charter was established, the Canadian society was corrupt
and unjust, but with the addition of it, Canada grew into a renowned wealthy, free, and equal country.
The Charter puts in place rights and freedoms that are necessary for a balanced democratic society and
it involves laws and rules that keep citizens protected and safe. It also provides opportunities for social
and economic success for not only the people of Canada, but for Canada as a whole. The
establishment of the Charter by Queen Elizabeth II on April 17, 1982 was truly the start of a positive,
social and legal revolution for Canada that would continue to benefit us and the country even today
(Canadian 1; sec. 3, para. 8).
The Charter is divided into categorized sections that have different sets of rights or freedoms, but they
all come together to complete one job and that is ensuring every Canadian s rights and keeping
everyone safe. The greatest impact of the Charter has always been in the area of criminal law. Charter
protected legal rights mean more prominent protections for accused people, including the right to
speak to a lawyer, to not be detained subjectively, and to be free against unreasonable search and
seizure (Significance 1; sec. 5, para. 1). These things really makes Canada a fair and just country. But,
although the greatest impact of the Charter has been

Srebrenca Genocide Essay
In 1997, the world witnessed the second most horrific crime in eastern Europe since the Holocaust:
The Srebrenica massacre. Throughout the course of 11 days, over 8,000 Bosniak Bosnian Muslim
males, specifically those who were of age to join the military, were rounded up, and killed by the
Bosnian Serb army. The army s defense for their actions was that they were trying to reunite Serb
territory after the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina became its own state. Despite this claim, the
ICTY still charged Radovan Karadzic and Ratko Mladic, two of the men who spearheaded the ethnic
cleansing campaign in Bosnia, with war crimes including genocide. However, scholars debate whether
Srebrenica, albeit horrible, and other instances like itself, being labeled a genocide is a misapplication
of the term. Due to the technical legal definition of what constitutes as a genocide, many crimes like

As defined by the UN, a genocide is the intentional destruction of a whole or part of a racial, ethnical,
or religious group. The problem people see with calling Srebrenica a genocide is the intention behind
the crime. According to William Schabas, author of Genocide in International Law: The Crime of
Crimes, prosecutors had to stretch the definition of genocide in order to prove that Bosnia Serb leaders
had intentions to eliminate Bosniaks. (M.S, Genocide) Although this may be true, since their reason
was to unify Serb land, we cannot disregard the fact that they used ethnic cleansing to make this
happen, which in turn eliminated Bosniaks from Srebrenica. Is it then morally, and legally right to say
that the ends justify the means in this case, in the sense that it would not be considered a genocide? I
would like to think not, especially with a crime that took the lives of more than 8,000 people and

If something like that can destroy a copper cable, imagine what could happen to a fiber cable, which is

building? This may seem like a strange question to ask, but it s my experience that network problems
often coincide with visits from the phone company. I ve had phone company technicians cut cables,
disconnect cables, and do just about anything else that you can imagine. I won t pretend to understand
the logic behind this behavior, but if you re having network problems and someone tells you that
someone was in the building doing phone or electrical work yesterday, then you ve got a good place to

other physical stress? It never fails to amaze me what end users will admit to when you ask the right

Retinol Hypothesis
The relationship between polychlorinated biphenyls and thyroid hormones and retinol was studied
focusing on two groups of female polar bears (females with cubs of the year and females without
cubs) and within a group of males. PCB is an industrial organochlorine chemical by product which has
toxic effects. Since PCB is volatile it is deposited in the polar regions. PCB negatively impacts brain
development due to their impact on the thyroid system. It also causes menstrual dysfunction,
anovulation, and miscarriage. The polar bear feeds on the seals which contain OCs in their fatty
tissues so the PCB congeners can greatly accumulate in their body. There are two main types of

PCB also affects the thyroid enzymes. In this study, the global null hypothesis was there is no
relationship between PCB and Thyroid hormones and Retinol in female and male bears. The
alternative hypothesis was that there is a relationship present between PCB and Thyroid hormones and
Retinol in female and male bears. The treatment group in the study was that the expecting polar bear
mothers fasted for at least three months and the control group in the study was the mothers who were
not pregnant and the males. Because intercourse, reproduction, and sustenance of the polar bears
affect the level of thyroid hormone and retinol, there are likelihoods of the effects of PCBs and other
OCs on thyroid hormones and retinol status may vary. The bears were all from the Svalbard
population. In order to prevent confounding results occurring from seasonal variation, the study took
place in spring between the months of March and April. The animals were live captured and

Analysis Of In The Studio Poem
Savona Huff
Mrs. Barnes
Art 111
29th September, 2017
Art is another form of language, that artists use to explain something or express their feelings. I
believe that through art, communication is more passionate and thoughtful. In paintings, artist have
their own techniques in which they use to convey the messages in their work. The piece In the Studio
c by William Merritt Chase 1889 1916, he connects with his viewers through expression of lines,
space and depth, light and color, texture and design. This painting was also donated by Mary Reynolds
Babcock Foundation, ARCA Forsyth 1967 2.4.
Viewing the painting, I found that William uses a variety of lines. I found a good amount of thick and
thin contoured line in the body and the clothing of the woman sitting in the chair. Contoured lines help
to add volume and to mold into something. The pure contour lines in the woman chest helps her
character appear more feminine, as well as the curvy and thin lines in her dress and shoes. The curved
outline in her body gives a visual gesture and communicates body language. We all know that body
language is a nonverbal form of communication, it can say a lot, and cause different reactions. The
artist incorporated implied line in the figures painted on the dresser. The Buddha statue appears to be
looking down at the women, and the man looking statue appears to be looking away from the woman.
This puts the focal point on the woman. She also has implied lines that makes her appear to

A Treatise On Courtly Love Analysis
The ideas found in Andreas Capellanus A Treatise on Courtly Love have made their mark on the
human psyche since its inception. The treatise defines love as: an inborn suffering proceeding from the
sight and immoderate thought upon the beauty of the other sex, for which cause above all other things
one wishes to embrace the other and, by common assent, in this embrace to fulfill the commandments
of love... (pg. 1). By framing love as an obsessional and insufferable experience, Capellanus renders
those in the midst of worshiping a paramour from afar helpless until their lovesickness is
consummated. Because men and women are programmed to enjoy the act of making love, the text
attempts to contain and formalize love through a systematic explanation of the private and passionate

(this would be equivalent to blaming alcohol for one s actions the other night at the bar). Francesca s
subsequent telling of her placement in hell nonetheless evokes an interesting and varied interpretation.
Despite her sin, perhaps she is hinting at the fact that her brief love affair will in reality last a lifetime
since Paolo will always remain by her side in the second circle of The Inferno. Conversely, she may be
suggesting that her moment of fulfilled passion and desire was well worth the eternal consequence of
displacement and pain. At any rate, what remains true for Dante, and it is well represented in Inferno,
is that the greater one s will is to sin, the deeper into the hellish abyss they fall. While anoesis is the
least willful of sins, it is nevertheless a choice that caused the lustful to be damned for all

Comparing and Contrasting the Methods of Sufragettes and Suffragists
The suffragists were different from the suffragettes because the suffragists used moderate and peaceful
methods to get through their argument but the suffragettes thought that the suffragists idea was
working too slowly so they wanted to be completely opposite to them so they used militant methods.
The suffragettes believed in Deeds Not Words and especially when they knew that the Liberal
Government was not going to introduce reforms, so they turned to militant methods. The suffragettes
restricted membership of WSPU to women and to men, which meant men were not allowed to join. To

The suffragists had many problems of trying to get the vote and people in the group were not happy
with violence, which was getting them nowhere so Emmeline and Frederick Pethick Lawerence left
the WSPU, which led to a split of the WSPU, and they began to work on their own for votes for
women. They both believed that more violence would not achieve nothing and soon Sylvia Pankhurst

The difference between the two groups tactics Is that the suffragists ran meetings in almost all

lead a deputation to see the prime minister, their leader also held a public debate with her opponents

Foreign Tax Credit For Individuals
Foreign Tax Credit for Individuals: The Foreign Tax Credit is designed to be very simple in nature, as
it only requires basic math skills to compute the tax liability with the credit. As mentioned above,
income that is earned in a foreign location may be taxed by the respective government of that location.
Therefore, because the United States utilizes a global tax system, the individual or entity may be taxed
by the foreign government and definitely taxed by the United States government. Therefore in order to
reduce the double taxation liability, the government allows U.S. taxpaying entities to reduce U.S.
income tax dollar for dollar (credited) by the amount that has been paid in income tax by a U.S. person
to a foreign government (Adams). Furthermore, there are two limitations on this credit that a U.S.
taxpaying entity must be aware of. The first limitation states that only income tax is only susceptible
to the credit. To further explain, this means taxes like Value Added Tax, property taxes, taxes on
capital or assets, and any other tax which the U.S. does not consider a tax on income are excluded
from the foreign tax credit (Adams). (However, a valuable tax planning strategy will note that these
taxes may be deductible on an individual s Schedule A for Itemized Deductions. In addition, if an
individual owns a business or rents out a building abroad, he/she can deduct these expenses on his/her
Schedule C or Schedule E). The second limitation states that an

FDR Inaugural Address
FDR Inaugural Address Speech Analysis Essay
In arguably one of the most powerful of American political addresses ever given, President Franklin
Delano Roosevelt argues that, the only thing we have to fear is fear itself , and that in order to restore
America to its pre depression state, the American people must believe that he can lead them through
the Great Depression, so long as they appoint him the wartime executive powers required to handle
the situation effectively. Roosevelt emphasizes the need for action through the use of biblical allusions
and referring to himself as the prophet is this time of need, taking the role of Jesus, declaring, The
money changers have fled from their high seats in the temple of our civilization. We may now restore
that temple to the ancient truths. ; he plays upon the social needs as well as builds up his credibility
with the audience by stating his plan to combat the depression, broad Executive power to wage a war
against the emergency, as great as the power that would be given to me if we were in fact invaded by a
foreign foe. ; and cements his argument with his claims of value and policy, exposing the flaws of pre
depression American society, and eventually calling for the change he believes necessary to force
America out of the depression, we apply social values more noble than mere monetary profit. .
Franklin Delano Roosevelt goes to such lengths to earn the support of his fellow Americans in order to

Some people complain of a loss of balance, this is probably because the muscles become unable to
compensate for an off balance posture. Serious injury from tripping and falling down is a common risk
with Inclusion Body Myositis. In addition severe muscle pain is another commonly noted symptom.
The diagnosis for IBM, although difficult, simply because the symptoms may be caused by other
illnesses, is based on clinical signs and subsequent testing. Many tests can help diagnose the disease ,
including a blood test that screens for creatine kinase or CK levels. The result of muscle cell damage
is the blood enzyme CK. High CK levels would then show strange muscle damage. An
electromyography, which is a technique for recording the electrical activity of muscles, can be used to
recognize characteristic abnormalities. The best way to diagnose Inclusion Body Myositis , however,
is a muscle biopsy, where a small sample of muscle is removed for laboratory analysis (IBM
illnessopedia,n.d.,para 3) . Muscle resonance imaging scans may also reveal changes in the muscles.
(Travers, P. ,2010, June 17)
Prognosis, Treatment and Research The prognosis or outlook for patients suffering from IBM is not
good. So far IBM is generally resistant to most therapies. Its rate of progression also seems to be
unaffected by available treatments(NINDS IBM ,2014,para 3). According to Seminars in Neurology

Lucky, By Alice Sebold
At some point in their life, every person has been told to walk in somebody else s shoes because they
need to be aware of the struggles that other people face, but it is often tough for people to understand
things outside of the scope of their own practical knowledge. In her memoir, Lucky, Alice Sebold
suffers from this same problem. Throughout the course of her narrative, Sebold thinks of her
experience as something that is accessible to be understood by outsiders; in addition to this, Sebold
paints her reactions and experiences as a model that she can apply to other victims of sexual assault.
Even though Sebold s story is one of strength in the face of horrible occurrences, her lack of
acknowledgement in regards the ways in which other people s consciousness and coping mechanisms
differ from her own makes it far more difficult to sympathize with her than it should be considering
the content of her memoir. Evidence of her closed world understanding can be seen from the
beginning of the memoir, when she reports her sexual assault to the police (Sebold, 3), later in the
narrative, when other people react to her experiences and related feelings (Sebold 146), and finally,
and perhaps most significantly, when her close friend Lila undergoes a sexual assault (Sebold 220). To
begin, in the memoir Lucky, Alice Sebold makes a powerful start to her writing by telling the reader
about what happened to her, and, later in that same initial paragraph, she clarifies the reason for

Cinematic Codes in Moulin Rouge
All four cinematic codes work together in a film to inform the audience s understanding of a film and
to convey meaning and the ideology in a preferred reading favoured by the film maker so that the
audience interprets the film in the way intended. In the film Moulin Rouge (Luhrman, 2000, US) the
cinematic codes, mise en scene, sound, cinematography and editing all work well together in the
opening sequence to set up the film maker s preferred reading.
The film opens with a conductor on a stage in a grand theatre, signifying a show which links well with

quite slow to begin with. Suddenly changes to a song with a much faster tempo, The Can Can. This
song is also a famous one and helps inform the audience that the film is set in Paris. All the way
through this shot, the camera is slowly zooming in very slightly, and this camera movement helps to

Firstly, Collier beginning imagery of the scene develops a foreboding tone; ...as nervous as a kitten,

suspense through the use of the phrase, dark and creaky stairs . The connotation of this phrase is

Ha s character has become more strong through all the sad/scary things she has gone through. For
example three characteristic traits of Ha s are that she is jealous , scared, and upset. Ha s story is
similar to other refugees because her life is being ruined because of the war. She was forced out of
Saigon because the war was to close to her home. Ha is jealous because she wants to have as much
freedom as the boys in her family. .. I pouted when mother insisted one of my brothers rise first... only
male feet can bring luck. (Lai pg.2). Jealousy is something most people can t control because it is
something most people struggle with. Jealousy is common when talking about gender and what boys
can do and girls can t or the other way around. Sometimes it becomes unbearable so you become
defiant and do things that normally you wouldn t do. Another trait of Ha s is that she is scared because
the war was getting close to her home and they had to leave everything behind.

  • 4. War, Home, And Patriotism In War Is Kind By Stephen Crane Many poems about the civil war convey universal themes of the time. Stephen Crane s poem War is Kind is no different. The poem, War is kind written by Stephen Crane(1871 1900) has three themes common to civil war literature: Warfare, Home, and Patriotism. This poem s overall theme is about how war destroys families conversely to the title of War is Kind or the many times which Crane says War is Kind . The three themes of warfare, home, and patriotism are displayed in many pieces of Civil War literature consequently making them the universal themes. Firstly is the theme of Warfare and destruction of families caused by it. To start off with the theme of Warfare is common in many civil war literature. Do not weep, maiden, for ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The definition of patriotism is pride in your country or cause, conversely the war is seen as unpatriotic because the men seem to be fighting for nothing. Hoarse, booming drums of the regiment, /Little souls who thirst for fight, /These men were born to drill and die. (Lines 6 8) This adds on to the idea of the war being unpatriotic by showing that the men were only born to fight, or to Drill and Die consequently making it seem as if they were fighting just to fulfill their needs. This theme is also seen in lines 17 18 Swift, blazing flag of the regiment, / Eagle with crest of red and gold, (Lines 17 18) This flag is a very simple representative of death and illness using the colors it did. This all helps to result in the patriotic theme of the poem by giving us a representation of how unpatriotic the war was. To conclude the poem War is Kind By Stephen Crane includes three universal themes commonly seen in many examples of civil war literature. The themes of warfare, war on the home front, and patriotism occur in the poem as well as many other pieces of civil war literature. The overall theme of the poem is how war is cruel and unkind making the poem seem like mockery to those who believe war is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

How Does Holden Caulfield Change The change of Holden Caulfield Holden s parents as it seemed in the book they didn t necessarily fill the large role of parenthood. holden from a young age wasn t given all the attention he needed as a young child . his parents loved him but just weren t present in his life because of the working obligations they had. We can see this when Holden says and what my lousy childhood was like, and how my parents were occupied and all before they had me and all.. (Salinger 1). I see that when he goes on the date with Sally Hayes it exhibited his difficulty at cooperating with others. At first, he gives us a dire impression of Sally, I wasn t too crazy about her, but I d known her for years. (slainger105) I see that holden doesn t want to necessary express himself and suppress his feeling and affection to seem he is tough. I would implore holding to go out in the world and act like how he really is and not to make a fake false persona of himself. Holden is suspended between adulthood and childhood. Several of his actions and words show evidence of his confusion between adults and children. Admitting to his immaturity, Holden says, I was sixteen then, and I m seventeen now, and sometimes I act like I m about thirteen. (Salinger 9) Sunny, the prostitute is an example of Holden s attempt to be an adult, but realizing he is stuck in childhood. You see my son is really trying to be someone he is not and I think that his school life has an important role in that. When holding attended pencey prep he always wanted to not be the one standing out see he would join clicks so he wouldn t get bullied because my son is a pacifist. I would have to take Holden out of school a probably homeschool him because I think interaction with high school children is not necessarily right for him. I mean yes interaction is necessary but not in an environment where 15 18 year olds feel like they rule. I understand that Holden has a strong relationship with his sister so I would continue to make him interact with her and care for her because seemingly that brings him ... At Sandy Hook Elementary School a day of learning was interrupted by the sounds of gun shots. That day 20 year old Adam Lanza shot over 20 children between the ages 6 7. Such a horrific event that had a cause of what seems an everyday occurrence to teens and kids. Violence simulated video games. These games can cause a negative mindset that violence is okay. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Others may argue the fact that videogames don t harm anyone outside the game. Considering the facts of murders and school shootings with the potential cause by video game playing, the stakes are high that video games are truly a danger to others. Just as in the article High Jinks: Shootout this school is contributing to make this simulation as realistic as they can. The school has students contributing to fight to the death, by killing other classmates for a earnings of money. Not only is this provoking students to act out, also a reward earned for such violence creates a harmful outcome in the students minds. Though this game only consist of fake weapons and or water guns, this game can also be very dangerous. The game takes place in the environment including others who don t participate in the games. At one point a student gets to the point of chasing down a student to the airport, and as there overall motive to kill the student there were after. These students are now using bath toys, later they can be overcome with the idea that violence is just a game, continuing in some kind of upgrade to a real weapon. Surely with this idea harm can come to others. Let alone the environment is too realistic. By being under that influence that the violence is game, this can be harmful to those teens. The issue is especially relevant today, because the games are more realistic and bloodier than ever, and because most american boys play them at some point. A psychologist at Brock University in Ontario found that longer periods of violent game playing among high school students predicted a slightly higher numbers of such incidents (schoolyard fights with peers) over time. This can show the impact that can be made on others in the same environment as the violent video game ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In the 1850s, America was facing a political crisis, and slavery was threatening to tear the nation apart. There were seven debates that took place between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas. The two candidates for Senate challenged the other s ideas about many topics but the most import was, slavery and its future in the United States. From August 21 until October 15, Stephen Douglas battled Abraham Lincoln in face to face debates all around the state. The prize they sought to win was a seat in the Senate. The debates were to be held at 7 locations throughout Illinois. During the debates, Douglas still advocated popular sovereignty, which meant to maintain the right of the citizens of a territory to permit or prohibit slavery. It was, a sacred right of self government, or so he said. Lincoln proceeded to point out that Douglas s position directly challenged the Dred Scott decision. This in which decreed that the citizens of a territory had no such power. In what became known as the Freeport Doctrine. Douglas replied that whatever the Supreme Court decided was not as important as the actions of the citizens. If a territory refused to have slavery, no laws, no Supreme Court ruling, would force them to permit it. Over and over again, Lincoln made that point that a house divided could not stand. Douglas refuted this by saying that the founders, left each state perfectly free to do as it pleased on the subject. Lincoln felt that blacks were entitled to the rights enumerated in the Declaration of Independence, which include life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Douglas argued that the founders ... Finding Emergency Housing After A Fight Essay From trying to find a place to get her mother in law s hair permed to having to find emergency housing after a fight erupted between two seniors (sisters, no less) over dentures to spending Christmas in the emergency room instead of the living room, Gail s firsthand experience shows how sticky it can get when you are in charge of your parents. The book is divided into 60 vignettes followed by questions, including Surviving the Annual Family Reunion, To Tube or Not to Tube, That Is the Question, and When I Will Means I Won t. Gail, who also speaks and holds workshops on aging, says the questions get people thinking about their own situations. One problem is most people think they are going to just up and die. That s like 10 percent of people now, she says. This means that most of us will end up needing care provided by others at some point, like it or not. It s the best of all worlds when you are willing to broach it before the crisis, Gail says. What it brings up if you wait is more fear. Death is undergirding everything to talk about. Like Amy, Gail says a meeting is best. The first thing is to bring family together after a letter or a phone call to tell them it s time to talk about end of life issues. • 10. Master Visconti s Ntoni By Giovanni Verga Master Visconti s Ntoni After World War II Italy was in shambles, and the rural nation struggled to close the developmental gap between itself and other European nations. It was during this time, in 1948, that Luchino Visconti filmed La Terra Trema, or The Earth Trembles, on the island of Sicily. It was a critically acclaimed adaptation of I Malavoglia, or The House by the Medlar Tree, written by Giovanni Verga in 1881. Life on the island as depicted by Verga had barely changed in the approximate 70 years between the two works, and Visconti filmed in a true neorealist style, recruiting nonprofessional Sicilians to act out their own lives in their own native tongue. While Visconti s political messages change the meaning of the story, he succeeds in capturing the never ending struggle of the oppressed working class, and the futility of disjointed revolt. In many respects, Visconti did not stay true to many aspects of Verga s novel. His film leaves out most of the supporting characters in the book, depicting the people of Trezza as considerably less sympathetic to the main characters, a stark contrast to the energetic community painted by Verga. Visconti wanted to portray the Valastros as a family against the world, betrayed and abandoned as soon as they challenged the social norms. Visconti also featured Ntoni, as opposed to his grandfather Master Ntoni, as the main protagonist in the film. Master Ntoni s belief in fate and his strong conviction in the self possession of ... Digging a stump out of the ground is difficult work, if it is even possible. You could pull it out with a truck, but then you have to dispose of the big stump. The most efficient and easy way to get rid of a tree stump in your yard is to grind it. Here is some more information. Deciding On DIY Or Professional Removal If you only have one stump to grind, you might as well hire a tree service professional and save yourself the trouble of renting a grinder and doing the work yourself. Renting a grinder for the day costs about the same as having a professional remove one tree. If you re trying to save money, then you ll want to get a quote. If you rent one, you may be limited to a small model that isn t capable of grinding deep into the roots. Some commercial stump grinders fit on tractors or trucks and can chew up stumps all the way down to the main roots a few feet into the ground. • 15. Building Organizational Capacity For Change Introduction Organization capacity for change as discussed in William Judge s book, Building Organizational Capacity for Change, includes eight dimensions trustworthy leaders, trusting followers, capable champions, involved middle management, systems thinking, communication system, accountable culture, and innovative culture (Judge, 2011). Recognizing the need for change and initiating change are two different elements, knowing that a change needs to happen but not having the organizational capacity to make the change will stall any initiative in its tracks. A leader influences whether or not an organization has the capacity for change, and as discussed by Judge, (2011) one of the most important influences is being a trustworthy leader. A leader also needs to recognize when a change is needed and be ready to initiate that change. Monitoring and Responding to the Drivers of Change Drivers of change include, to name a few, technology trends, state of the economy, globalization, and customer expectations. These drivers are going to look and feel different across industries and will be dependent on other drivers such as competition and industry trends. Monitoring for these changes include understanding the current technology, attending conferences that provide insight to the newest or upcoming technology advancements in your industry. • 16. The Importance Of The Charter Of Rights And Freedom The Charter of Rights and Freedom is a part of the Canadian Constitution which is a set of laws with basic rules that run our country. Before the Charter was established, the Canadian society was corrupt and unjust, but with the addition of it, Canada grew into a renowned wealthy, free, and equal country. The Charter puts in place rights and freedoms that are necessary for a balanced democratic society and it involves laws and rules that keep citizens protected and safe. It also provides opportunities for social and economic success for not only the people of Canada, but for Canada as a whole. The establishment of the Charter by Queen Elizabeth II on April 17, 1982 was truly the start of a positive, social and legal revolution for Canada that would continue to benefit us and the country even today (Canadian 1; sec. 3, para. 8). The Charter is divided into categorized sections that have different sets of rights or freedoms, but they all come together to complete one job and that is ensuring every Canadian s rights and keeping everyone safe. The greatest impact of the Charter has always been in the area of criminal law. Charter protected legal rights mean more prominent protections for accused people, including the right to speak to a lawyer, to not be detained subjectively, and to be free against unreasonable search and seizure (Significance 1; sec. 5, para. 1). Throughout the course of 11 days, over 8,000 Bosniak Bosnian Muslim males, specifically those who were of age to join the military, were rounded up, and killed by the Bosnian Serb army. The army s defense for their actions was that they were trying to reunite Serb territory after the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina became its own state. Despite this claim, the ICTY still charged Radovan Karadzic and Ratko Mladic, two of the men who spearheaded the ethnic cleansing campaign in Bosnia, with war crimes including genocide. However, scholars debate whether Srebrenica, albeit horrible, and other instances like itself, being labeled a genocide is a misapplication of the term. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As defined by the UN, a genocide is the intentional destruction of a whole or part of a racial, ethnical, or religious group. The problem people see with calling Srebrenica a genocide is the intention behind the crime. According to William Schabas, author of Genocide in International Law: The Crime of Crimes, prosecutors had to stretch the definition of genocide in order to prove that Bosnia Serb leaders had intentions to eliminate Bosniaks. (M.S, Genocide) Although this may be true, since their reason was to unify Serb land, we cannot disregard the fact that they used ethnic cleansing to make this happen, which in turn eliminated Bosniaks from Srebrenica. I ve had phone company technicians cut cables, disconnect cables, and do just about anything else that you can imagine. Retinol Hypothesis The relationship between polychlorinated biphenyls and thyroid hormones and retinol was studied focusing on two groups of female polar bears (females with cubs of the year and females without cubs) and within a group of males. I believe that through art, communication is more passionate and thoughtful. In paintings, artist have their own techniques in which they use to convey the messages in their work. The piece In the Studio c by William Merritt Chase 1889 1916, he connects with his viewers through expression of lines, space and depth, light and color, texture and design. This painting was also donated by Mary Reynolds Babcock Foundation, ARCA Forsyth 1967 2.4. Viewing the painting, I found that William uses a variety of lines. I found a good amount of thick and thin contoured line in the body and the clothing of the woman sitting in the chair. Contoured lines help to add volume and to mold into something. The pure contour lines in the woman chest helps her character appear more feminine, as well as the curvy and thin lines in her dress and shoes. The curved outline in her body gives a visual gesture and communicates body language. We all know that body language is a nonverbal form of communication, it can say a lot, and cause different reactions. The artist incorporated implied line in the figures painted on the dresser. The Buddha statue appears to be looking down at the women, and the man looking statue appears to be looking away from the woman. This puts the focal point on the woman. (pg. 1). By framing love as an obsessional and insufferable experience, Capellanus renders those in the midst of worshiping a paramour from afar helpless until their lovesickness is consummated. Francesca s subsequent telling of her placement in hell nonetheless evokes an interesting and varied interpretation. Despite her sin, perhaps she is hinting at the fact that her brief love affair will in reality last a lifetime since Paolo will always remain by her side in the second circle of The Inferno. Conversely, she may be suggesting that her moment of fulfilled passion and desire was well worth the eternal consequence of displacement and pain. At any rate, what remains true for Dante, and it is well represented in Inferno, is that the greater one s will is to sin, the deeper into the hellish abyss they fall. Foreign Tax Credit For Individuals Foreign Tax Credit for Individuals: The Foreign Tax Credit is designed to be very simple in nature, as it only requires basic math skills to compute the tax liability with the credit. As mentioned above, income that is earned in a foreign location may be taxed by the respective government of that location. Therefore, because the United States utilizes a global tax system, the individual or entity may be taxed by the foreign government and definitely taxed by the United States government. Therefore in order to reduce the double taxation liability, the government allows U.S. taxpaying entities to reduce U.S. income tax dollar for dollar (credited) by the amount that has been paid in income tax by a U.S. person to a foreign government (Adams). Furthermore, there are two limitations on this credit that a U.S. taxpaying entity must be aware of. The first limitation states that only income tax is only susceptible to the credit. To further explain, this means taxes like Value Added Tax, property taxes, taxes on capital or assets, and any other tax which the U.S. does not consider a tax on income are excluded from the foreign tax credit (Adams). (However, a valuable tax planning strategy will note that these taxes may be deductible on an individual s Schedule A for Itemized Deductions. In addition, if an individual owns a business or rents out a building abroad, he/she can deduct these expenses on his/her Schedule C or Schedule E). The second limitation states that an ...
