Lily Owens Traits
Lily Owens is the main character as well as the narrator in the novel The Secret Life of Bees, by Sue
Monk Kidd. Lily is a fourteen year old white girl living in racially segregated Sylvan, South Carolina.
The story is set in the mid 1960 s. When we are first introduced to Lily, she lives with her abusive
father on a peach farm. We learn that she had accidentally killed her mother at the age of four, and has
been made to feel guilty and unworthy of love. The story starts to develop when she helps her black
babysitter, Rosaleen escape from prison. Lily loved Rosaleen like a mother. They use this opportunity
to escape from Sylvan and her unhappy home. As Lily develops over the course of the story, we can
see and learn about Lily s many unique ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By all rights, Lily should have been a person of no faith. She grew up in a home where she was abused
and deprived of love. However it was Lily s innate faith that enabled her to survive. Lily truly
believed that her mother had loved her. All along while living with T. Ray Lily would imagine all the
nice things her mother used to do with her, like brush her hair and buy pretty dresses for her. It was
this faith in her mother s love that got her through these tough times. Accordingly, it was Lily s faith in
Rosaleen that caused Lily to help her escape from jail. Lily knew that Rosaleen was a good person
who had always been there for her. She had faith that Rosaleen did not deserve to be in prison. It was
also Lily s strong faith that allowed her to succeed in finding the answers to her mother s past. Lily
had faith that the picture found of the Black Madonna with the inscription of Tiburon on the back
would lead her down that path. She went to the town of Tiburon simply because it was written on the
back of the picture. She wasn t even sure where she was going, but because of her tremendous faith
she just went along. Lily had faith that the Boatwright sisters would have the answers regarding her
mother. She also had faith that living with the Boatwright sisters was the key to her and Rosaleen s
safety and security. As Lily adjusted to her life with the Boatwright sister s, and her job as a beekeeper
she developed faith in the power of the beehives. The predictability and the complexity of their
lifecycle gave her comfort as well as a renewal of her faith in life. The bees taught her a lot, and as a
result she gave them her respect. At the end of the book Lily had to use her faith to believe in herself.
Lily had to believe she was a person worthy of love and a family. It was this character trait of Lily s
that got her through this

Chlamydia Trachoma
Chlamydia trachomatis is the bacterium that causes trachoma a chronic contagious infection of the
cornea and conjunctiva and that trachoma is the world s leading preventable cause of blindness.
Trachoma is caused and transmitted through multiple routes, including contaminated fingers, flies and
the use of dirty face cloth (Hopkins et al., 2008, p.476; Dolin et al., 1997, p. 1511; Thylefors, 1992,
p.90; Resnikoff, et al, 2004, p. 844). All of which are hygiene related, such as direct infection by flies,
person to person from clothing used to wipe children s faces and by hand to face contact. Lack of
facial cleanliness, poor access to water supplies, lack of good pit latrines and a high number of flies
are some of risk factors for the disease.
Resnikoff, et al (2004, p. 846) states that, globally, trachoma makes 500 million people visually
impaired and 8 million people are at risk of blindness from the disease throughout 57 ... Show more

Water related vector diseases include malaria, dengue, yellow fever and many more. All malaria
illnesses were caused by the infection of the red blood cells by the malaria parasite and the
involvement of the red cells makes malaria a potential multisystem disease, as every organ of the body
was reached by the blood, (Brian et al 2008, p.1266. Fakhreldin et al 2003, p.5430). WHO, (2007, p.

worldwide with 40% of global population is at risk with malaria. It has been estimated that 609
million people in Africa are at risk of having malaria (Mabaso et al 2007, p. 35). Almost 34% of the
populations in Zambia live in endemic risk areas, while 48% of the populations are in epidemic risk

Colonial America Analysis
A seven letter word that is shrouded in both hatred and guilt of the destruction of countless cultures; at
the expense of cheap labor and profit. Yes slavery can be seen as one of humanities worst point in
history. To separate a family or force another man/woman to do your biding is absolutely deplorable.
And we have looked back to our past in shame and wondered how these people that went through
slavery got through all of it. We know of a way to find out by looking into the actually stories and
occupancies in all perspectives. In order to truly understand and relate to these unheard survivors.
Christianity is the largest religion in the United States of America; nearly 70.6%. Even traced back to

In a historical fiction story by Toni Morrison called Beloved it follows what life is like during the
Reconstruction period of America. In Beloved we follow the life of Sethe along with her daughter
Denver. They use to be a family of seven until the ghost of Sethe s first baby daughter; the baby was
named Beloved. Later in the story a friend/lover from the plantation Sethe came from named Paul D.
Eventually Paul D rids the family of the ghost baby, but later on a strange woman comes into the trio s
life who coincidently is named Beloved. Whenever Beloved is around Sethe and Paul D she reminds
them of the horrors of slavery and the bad that they both have done in their life, while when she is
with Denver she sees hope and the idea of a sister she never had. Once Sethe begins to accept the
wrongs she has done Beloved is no longer around. Beloved as a woman represents all of the harm and
horror of slavery, because Sethe remembers all of the abuse and murder while Paul D thinks of
himself as only a

Innocence In Toni Morrison s The Bluest Eye
In Toni Morrison s, The Bluest Eye Pecola Breedlove s life is told through the perspectives of her
peers and acquaintances which portray her as a poor, unfortunate, and ugly black child. She goes
about her life being beaten down at every opportunity, almost literally, and her singular wish for blue
eyes signifies her silent plea for a life better than the one she s currently living. Pecola exists in her life
like a doormat, to be stepped on, soiled and lost in the demented world that criticizes and dehumanizes
her. Pecola Breedlove s search for justice begins and ends with her singular wish for eyes she believed
would make the world view her differently, a wish that represents her innocence as well as her
knowledge of the cold reality of social ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Toni Morrison does this to convey that people often only try to understand someone and their
problems once they re too far gone to help. Pecola s conversation with her own imagination gives the
unfortunate circumstance that Pecola finally has a friend she talks to, but it s one she s had to create
herself. Not only does this reveal that she s been abandoned by even characters who caused her harm,
but also that her imaginary friend isn t formed from a child s imagination but is an escape from the
darkness that she s witnessed. Finally having access to the inner working s of Pecola s mind it s clear
that her way of thinking has been altered, for example she thinks that all the stares she s been getting
from people in the town are because they ve noticed her blue eyes . In reality her eyes haven t changed
color, and people are staring at her because they know she s pregnant with her father s child. As the
novel progresses it s not clear that the lives of other people are really affecting Pecola because she s
seen by everyone to take what she s given and move on. However there s a piece of the novel that s
confusing up until Pecola s breaking point. That being the titles of the chapters, which starts out as a
chapter on its own. Here is the house. It is green and white... , this simple paragraph is repeated, each

The Ring Fencing Of A Bank
We now going to critically assess the statement that the ring fencing of a bank s retail banking services
from their more risky investment, wholesale and proprietary banking activities, scheduled to take
place in 2018 2019, is the last and most necessary reform of the UK banking system to prevent a
recurrence of a major financial crisis such as the one the occurred in 2008 2010.
Ring fencing is the separation of all the Bank s critical banking services from their investment and
wholesale banking services . This means to segregate the retail banking from investment banking to
protect consumers from systemic problems with the system.
On 4th February 2013 the Financial Services (Banking Reform) Bill (the Bill) was introduced to
Parliament. This Bill has sought to implement the ring fencing proposals of the UK Independent
Commission of Banking (ICB), which is also known as the Vickers report. The Bill also represents the
UK s response to wider international calls to structurally reform banks, such as the Liikanen reports
proposals on reforming the structure of the EU banking sector .
The ICB was announced after the formation of the coalition government in 2010, and its
recommendations fell under three headings: retail ring fence; loss absorbency; and competition. The
ICB said that the ring fence s purpose is to separate banking activities where the continuous provision
of service is vital to the economy and to customers of a bank. This is order to ensure that the provision

Analysis Of Pat Barker As A Memory
A memory has different ways to function that varies from one person to another. The memory itself is
defined as the faculty by which the mind stores and remembers information. Trauma is something else
that can be attached to a memory and it is defined as a deeply distressing or disturbing experience.
Memory plays a tremendous role in our lives as well as in our society. A memory can prevent us from
making mistakes as well as it can haunt us to the point of breakdown. Are all memories worth to be
reminded of? In Regeneration by Pat Barker as well as in The IMIGRANTS by W.G. Sebald we see a
flow of narratives that underline traumatic memories. On this paper, we will focus our attention on
Billy Prior, one of the characters in Regeneration, and Ambros Adelwarth of The Emigrants who are
somehow fighting their memories.
Billy Prior and Ambros Adelwarth both represent a strong problem of memory, they both have a clear
memory of their past, but sharing them is one of the problems in the first place. Let begin by talking
about Billy Prior, a conflicted and complicated character being a soldier who had had a difficult life,
both at war and at home as he mentions to Rivers about the front: Look, you might like to think it s
one big happy family out there, but it s not (Regeneration, pg. 53). His experience in the army was not
as happy as he had imagined it could be since he believed that he did not really fit in his previous job
as a clerk in a shipping office, but that he would

The Conflict Perspective On Class Struggles
The family is a social institution present in all human societies. A family unit is a group of people
sharing a relationship based on biology, marriage, or adoption. The conflict perspective refers to the
inequalities that exist in all societies. The conflict perspective originated from out of Karl Max s
writings on class struggles. This perspective presents society in a different light than do the
functionalist and symbolic interactionist perspectives. This perspective focuses on the negative,
conflicted, and ever changing nature of society. Conflict theorists challenge the status quo, unlike
functionalists who defend it, encourage social change, and believe that the rich and powerful force
social order on the poor and the weak. When looking at the conflict perspective in reference to family,
the family works toward the continuance of social inequality, whether on purpose or unknowingly.
Wealthy families are able to keep their privilege social position for the members of that family,
whereas poorer families are denied this status. This perspective is also more beneficial for men than
women. It allows men to maintain their power position. Inequality between the sexes is a result of this
family being patriarchal. Gender roles are significant. The roles of the men in the family are much
more important than the roles of the women even if the women are more hard working than their male
counterparts.

Essay on Merck Case Study
Introduction to the Case First established in 1668 in Darmstadt, Germany, Merck is currently (in 1978)
one of the largest prescription drug producers in the world. After coming off a 10 year drug drought in
the late 1970s, Merck put a large amount of money into research to continue its dominance in the
prescription drug industry. The research first approach worked and since then Merck has increased
sales significantly. Merck s mission was well stated by founder George W. Merck. We try never to
forget that medicine is for the people...not for the profits (Bollier 3).
Merck researchers have been investigating soil deposits from the Kitasato Institute in Japan looking
for naturally occurring antibiotics. In this research they ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Cambell puts Merck in a difficult situation. First, Merck must choose a course of action that is
ethically responsible and is consistent with its mission of making drugs to help people. Second, the
option must address the reality that businesses must make a profit to stay open, so it should also offer
some type of benefit for the company financially. One option for Merck is to proceed only with the
drug Ivomec for animals and not to develop a drug for river blindness. There is simply not a large
enough market that could afford any potential drug to help with river blindness. A significant amount
of research has already been put into Ivomec and there is a high probability that Ivomec will be a
financially successful product for the business. This option would maximize the business profits and
minimize its risks. On the other hand, it is hard to justify such a course of action with the mission of
the business. Millions of people would continue to suffer from river blindness. This option puts profits
before the people and it could possibly result in a negative backlash from the media. If Merck were to
pursue such a route, measures could still be taken to potentially help the victims of river blindness.
Merck could release its research on ivermectin to other drug companies, allowing them the

Congress Term Limits
Should members of Congress be subject to term limits? What are the main benefits or disadvantages
to unlimited incumbency? I strongly believe that Congress should have term limits. Currently,
members of the House of Representatives can

serve two terms. These two terms equal six years. In a
previous post, I discussed how the amendments should not be allowed to be changed with ease and the
two term rule falls under the 22Nd amendment. If this amendment changed, it would allow a president
to serve more than six years and that is way too much. Every president has a different idea of how
they want the country ran and sometimes those ideas are not always the best. With the two term rule, a
new president can come in and try their

Plague And People Summary
Disease and plague, something that has been with man since the beginning, always challenging them,
forcing them to adapt and change. Plagues and Peoples by William H. McNeill is a book explaining
the hardships, facts, and evidence of how plagues caused man to adapt and move. Documented
encounters with disease, ranging from the height of the Chinese empire, to the medieval kingdoms in
Europe and Spain, as well as the colonization of the Americas, and the great genocide of the native
peoples of South America. The illusory idea that man had won the battle in 1974 was quickly proven
wrong yet again, for man may never win the battle against disease, and forever be in a constant battle.
McNeill s claim of fact as well as Ethos allowed him to write a consistent story including rhetoric
devices, showing the true purpose of the informative book and conveying his main point of how
plagues shaped the course of humankind development. An authors claim of fact must be backed with
solid evidence ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
McNeill has this said drive, writing his book in a way that would explain what he is trying to say,
which is how plagues have always, and will always be part of mans evolution. Infectious disease
which antedated the emergence of humankind will last as long as humanity itself, and will surely
remain, as it has hitherto, one of the fundamental parameters and determinants of human history (295).
He states here exactly what he was trying to convey throughout the whole book. This shows control
over the story and that McNeill knows what he wants people to hear, and what they should do with it.
McNeill really gets the reader to think about plagues as a whole and their role in humanities evolution
and adaptation. It gives people a broader understanding and opens up new doors to which they can
learn from. This shows his claim of authority, or Ethos, of the

Risk And Risk Of Risk
The risk score represents the criticality order of the risks, while the risk priority number is used for
assessing risk in a project and generally do not have a meaning on their own. In this case some of the
numbers are identical for the risk scores and priority numbers; however this is not always the case.
The reason for the duplicate numbers happens when the value is estimated to be smaller and the
impact is bigger in one risk than the other with a smaller impact. As you can see from the above charts
it is critical for New Concepts to concentrate first and foremost on the quality and labor risks,
followed swiftly by the financial risk.
Risk Planning and Analysis Risk Planning and Analysis is used to develop risk responses which are
options and actions to mitigate and reduce project threats. Risk responses delegate the owner for each
potential risk and are agreed upon by all parties involved. There are four ways risk can be managed
which are transferring risk, avoiding risk, reducing or mitigating risk and accepting risk.
Transferring Risk: Risk can be transferred from an organization to its contractor and vice versa. This
should be agreed upon prior to the project starting and detailed in the contract. All risk may not be
transferred, sometimes only partial risk can be transferred. New Concepts may consider transferring
risk to a contractor helping with coding when they do not believe they will not meet deadlines on a
new system.
Avoid Risk: Risk can be avoided

Most Painful Memories:
An Explication of Edward Mayes University of Iowa, 1976 Take a minute to imagine Men looking
like they had been/attacked repeatedly by a succession /of wild animals, never/ ending blasted field of
corpses, and throats half gone, /eyes bleeding, raw meat heaped/ in piles. These are the vividly,
grotesque images Edward Mayes describes to readers in his poem, University of Iowa Hospital, 1976.
Before even reading the poem, the title gave me a preconceived idea of what the poem might be about.

By using abstract words to describe these long suffering patients, Mayes forces dramatic images into
the reader s mind. While reading the book The Discovery of Poetry by Frances Mayes, I learned a lot
about figurative imagery. Figurative imagery is used throughout Edward Mayes poem to make
connections between two ideas we typically would not associate with one another. A concrete example
of figurative imagery in Mayes poem is found in the line that reads, Men looking like they had
been/attacked repeatedly by a succession /of wild animals. I know that these patients most likely had
not been attacked by wild animals over and over again, but when the speaker plants these images in a
reader s mind, the suffering that these patients have endured become more realistic to the reader.
Sometimes using figurative imagery is much more effective than using a literal image. Mayes wants
readers to know how ill some of the patients are. He goes on by describing the 200 miles of scars of a
patient and how a boy who [had] shot his face off. Mayes figurative images make a stronger point
because they are so blunt. He doesn t seem to beat around the bush; he tells every detail exactly how
the speaker saw it. This poem would not give readers the same powerful emotions without the intense
imagery and literary tropes Mayes utilizes. Toward the end of the poem, the speaker

Fibromyalgia is hell on earth for the millions of those suffering around the world, and while there is
finally new research into this insidious disease, many questions remain unanswered. For instance
fibromyalgia was labeled as fibrositis, (First labeled by Gowers in 1904), and later rheumatism, etc,
until the American College of Rheumatology agreed in 1990 to diagnostic criteria, (11 or more
specific tender points throughout body.)
What causes fibromyalgia? The history of fibromyalgia is truly very sad as this disease although very
old has only recently received the attention needed to find the cause. Additional historical facts
regarding fibromyalgia include:
1) Historically fibromyalgia has been considered either a neuropsychiatric or musculoskeletal
condition.
2) Additional early names for fibromyalgia included muscular rheumatism, psychogenic rheumatism,
and neurasthenia among others.
3) The term fibromyalgia came from researcher Mohammed Yunis as a synonym for fibrositis, and
was first used in 1981.
4) In 1987 an article first used

Extra-Mitochondrial Family Structure
Many physiological processes in the cells require the participation of both intra and extra
mitochondrial enzyme reactions. A link between mitochondria and cytosol is provided by a group of
proteins known as the mitochondrial carriers (MCs) family (Arco Satrustegui, 2005; F. Palmieri,
2004). MCs comprise a family of about 40 50 proteins, depending on the organism, and provide the
main communication between mitochondrial matrix and extra mitochondrial spaces by transporting a
wide range of metabolites, nucleotides and cofactors. In humans, MCs are encoded by the nuclear
SLC25 family genes and are membrane embedded proteins that have to be imported into the i.m.m. (F.
Palmieri, 2004). MCs are structurally related proteins of about 30 KDa that shared a tripartite structure
with six hydrophobic domains. The analysis of the mitochondrial ADP/ATP carrier sequence, the first
primary structure of a mitochondrial solute carrier to be reported (Aquila et al., 1982), established that
the whole structure, of around 300 amino acids, could be divided into three tandemly repeated
homologous domains, each of about 100 residues in length (Saraste Walker, 1982) (Fig.1).

1985), in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Life Of A Woman, By Jamaica Kincaid
Lucy, the eponymous character of Jamaica Kincaid s second novel, moves from Antigua to New York
not in an arbitrary move, but in a calculated effort to explore her latent queer sexuality and gradually
escape the gendered labor of her homeland. By working as an au pair for an upper class white woman
named Mariah, Lucy trades birthing labor for domestic labor in a move that initially seems lateral, but
serves as a potential gateway to freedom from caretaking that would have been inaccessible in
Antigua. Unbridled from her mother, the American Lucy has opportunities to explore her sexuality
without being deemed promiscuous, and has the ability to live with a woman she can have intimate
relations with. Lucy has continuously disobeyed the performative prescriptions of heteronormativity
in her life, but, as explained by the work of Rosamund King, her transgressions in Antigua are
rendered invisible by a culture that believes women are incapable of sexual agency. America
acknowledges Lucy s transgressions against heteronormativity, which lets her explore sexuality and
gradually escape the obligations of gendered work. Lucy is escaping the obligations delineated by
female performance. Lucy does not begin to experiment or play with queerness and gender in
America, but remains unassimilated to beauty standards with the same intensity she had in Antigua.
During her upbringing, her gender nonconforming behaviors and ideology went ignored in Antigua
because of the common misconception that females are incapable of having sexual agency,
intelligence, or usefulness beyond sustenence work and caretaking within the household (King). Lucy
is allowed to kiss girls, like her best friend from school, and her does not fret over failing to enjoy acts
of intimacy with males. Heteronormativity is not enforced by expectations of female and male
pairings, but instead by the gendered division of labor. According to Nancy Hartsock s Feminist
Standpoint, this tradition of forcing females into sustenance work should create a collective caregiver
essence to women, and Lucy proves the antithesis. Akash Nichols, in his essay Straight Growth and
the Imperial Alternative: Queer Reading Jamaica Kincaid, delves into how 20th century and, as

Reality Tv Stereotypes
The concept of reality television has been around since the late 1990 s, starting with the first of it s
kind, Survivor, premiering on CBS in 1999. Viewers loved the authenticity that the show provided,
and as a result, reality TV (RTV) became a mainstay of prime time television. Currently, there are
more than 320 contemporary RTV shows that occupy the television screens of thousands of
individuals. However, the portrayal of women and their regressed stereotypical characterizations on
these RTV shows has become pervasive, specifically in the RTV genre. As evident on The Bachelor
series, one of the most successful RTV shows, the female contestants on the show serve to exemplify
almost every negative stereotype associated with women. The Bachelor mainly acts as a platform for
heteronormativity, masculine hegemonic dominance, and racism. The show alludes to ... Show more

As we mentioned in the introduction section, one of the time problems related to the Tableau
procedure is checking if the branch is closed or not. The ordinary way for checking if a branch is
closed is known as highly time cost process. We need an intelligent and simple way to construct and
check the branches. One way, is to use ordered branches (i.e. to put the negated predicates in the
branch first, and then not negated ones), but we still have a problem if the number of negated elements
is much greater than the not negated ones. The following scenario is possible in this case,
If we choose to check if the list contains neg X and X, if neg X is the last element in the negative ones,
and X is the last element in the not negated ones, we have to process all the elements of the negated
ones and in each time we process an element we start from the beginning of the list and process the
whole branch to check if its not negated element is exist. Of course, a lot of time is consumed before
tableau reaches neg X, and finds out that X is exist. branch. The third predicate closed / 1 check the
lists in the branch if the negative one is shorter than the positive on the predicate checks if neg X is a
member of the first list and X is a member of the second list; otherwise it checks if X is in the positive
list and neg
X in the negative one.
The fourth improvement, and the main idea of our implementation, is to use the multi threading
approach in implementing the tableau procedure.

Reputation and Image in William Shakespeare´s Othello
Othello Explication
In William Shakespeare s Othello, unspoken fears of being an outsider and concerns about his public
image contribute to the downfall of a tragic hero named Othello. Othello, a general in the Venetian
army s, final monologue reflects the importance of reputation and the conformity needed to fit his
surroundings. He is seen as an outsider of the Venetian culture; he is frequently referred to as the Moor
and is called an abundance of racial slurs by the Venice born natives. Although Othello never voices
his internal struggle to feel accepted by the people around him, his image and physical appearance are
some of major issues he faces. Even in the moments before he stabs himself, Othello is more
concerned with the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In his final monologue, Othello prays to be remembered as is, but when he starts to describe himself, it
seems as if it is how he wants to be remembered, not for who he actually was. The tone is ironic when
he describes himself as one not easily jealous (5.2.350) because in actuality, his jealousy is what led to
the death of his wife. If he was not easily made jealous then Iago s deceitful lies and actions would
have not have affected Othello as much as they did. Othello lies about his personal qualities because
he is concerned with how his reputation will be presented after his death. The tone is remorseful when
he like the base Judean, threw a pearl away/ richer than all his tribe; of ones who subdued eyes
(5.2.352 353). Othello could not see how much Desdemona s life was worth to him behind the hateful
illusion that Iago created and surrounded him with. Othello is ashamed that he committed murder, but
he does not fully accept responsibility when he blames his actions on being wrought (5.2.350) by Iago.
He tries to downplay his mistakes to try to be remembered as a better man than he turned out to be by
the end of the play. Othello s concerns are not only with his reputation as an upstanding citizen and
memorable soldier, but with his need to feel accepted by society. Throughout the play, on more than
one account, each character refers to Othello as the Moor or makes a

The Unrealistic Expectations Of Social Media
It is no secret that social media has taken over a lot of our time, and perception on society. It
influences our day to day lives without us really knowing. Social media usually portrays one s life to
be perfect, or it makes us feel like one s life needs to be perfect. For this reason being, social media
can be a bad thing. In The Social Networks by Neal Gabler, he explains how media has taken away the
meaning of friendship or anything real . In the long run, social media makes things seem better than
they actually are, it gives us unrealistic expectations for our friend and family interactions, which kills
the chance of having actual friendships because our expectations are so high. So, here are the reasons
elaborated on why social media ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Fake friends is not referring to people whom you cannot trust, but to the friends that you have on
Facebook and do not actually see in real life. This is a trend that has been seen on most social media
websites. It is also a lot harder to develop true friendships in real life because, as mentioned before,
our unrealistic expectations of friends has made us want the kinds of friends we see on TV. Facebook,
in fact, only underscores how much traditional friendship friendship in which you meet, talk and share
has become an anachronism and how much being friended is an ironic term, expresses Gabler. As
mentioned before Social media networks like Facebook make it seem as though we have more friends
than we actually do. However, in reality we do not really know most of the people we are friends with
on Facebook because being with friends on Facebook is more about the number and not if you
actually know the person or not. Not only do we not know most of our friends on our friends list, but
we get lazy to actually go out and make real friends. It is just so much easier to stay at home and click
the add button. Gabler also points out, One study found that Americans had one third fewer nonfamily
confidants than they had 20 years earlier, and 25% had no one in whom to confide whatsoever.
Another study of 3,000 Americans found that on

Essay Malcom X and Non-violence
My life has always been one of changes (436). Malcolm X, throughout his life, was one of the most
influential, and quite possibly the most effective, civil rights activists of the twentieth century. His
radical ideas and views were widely sought after from the oppressed African American population in
the 1950s and 60s. The changes he underwent throughout his life affected his views of a racist
America and inspired him to lead a dedicated life preaching, what he thought to be, the only method
of promoting change in the hearts and minds of every citizen in the United States; nonviolence. The
issue of violence loomed large in Malcolm X s rhetoric. In his speech s and public appearances he
refused to repudiate violence, realizing that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Anger and confusion were two very prominent themes throughout Malcolm s life with first, the death
of his father, and then the removal of his mother from their family, also under a white man s order.
Upon his arrival in Boston, Malcolm developed a strong criticism for the prejudice within the black
community that had arose in the early 1940s. He was surprised to find the judgmental nature both
classes had for each other in an attempt to increase their own status in artificial ways. Though Hill
Negroes arguably had a better quality of life than the many unemployed black residents of Boston,
their unwillingness to acknowledge the menial nature of their jobs while they look down on the poorer
blacks makes them just as snobbish as the racist whites.
Violence, ultimately, became a dominant force in Malcolm s life when he moved to the Harlem
ghettos. His anger and hostility was slowly directed from the black population towards white America,
but at the same time he blamed the black community draining the black ghetto of wealth. Malcolm
believed that wealthy white people not only exploited poor blacks on a daily basis, but also contribute
to the profound lack of opportunity in Harlem. It is for this reason he begins to blame the white
community for driving them into the spiral of crime, drugs, deceit, and poverty, giving them no other
option than the hustler s life; it wasn t much longer that Malcolm, himself, started to run numbers

SERVICE ENCOUNTER REPORT
I have evaluated six encounters with a variety of industries; they are all from the service sector. A
service sector business is one in which the perceived value of the offering to the buyer is determined
more by the service rendered than the product offered.
The services I encountered have various levels of intangibility. For example, my service encounter at
Odeon cinemas included physical aspects such as the theatre, popcorn, and tickets. However, with the
telephone banking service encounter there is almost no tangible aspect.
The services I encountered also varied in the separability of the buyer and provider. For services such

U.S History Is A Bitter Sweet Tale Of Many Triumphs And
U.S history is a bitter sweet tale of many triumphs and failures. A country built on the promise of an
individual s alienable rights, but practiced taking away those rights from most of its people . Slavery,
though in the past it will never be forgotten, was one of the darkest times in U.S history and still is a
reminder of what humans can do to each other. After decades of abuse of the African Americans
people the passing of the Emancipation Proclamation made slavery illegal and set those imprisoned
free. Many had to fight hard to achieve freedom and today we celebrate their accomplishments. In the

Not only does Clinton us Tubman s suffering of physical abuse during her time in slavery , but also
describes Tubman s mental abuse as support for her fight against slavery. One of the hardships slaves
face is how easy it was for a family to get separated. This was do to the buying and selling of slaves
that could separate mothers and fathers from their children. Unfortunately, Harriet Tubman lost three
of two of her sister when they were sold by the slave owners. Clinton states Slave parents lived in
abject terror of separation from their children. This fear, perhaps more than any other aspect of the
institution, revealed the deeply dehumanizing horror of slavery. (Clinton 10). One can not imagine the
paranoia and pain of the buying and selling of human lives especially when it comes to those that you
love most. The horror of having your children taken away from you came a reality for Tubman s
mother and left a scare on Tubman for the rest of her life. She would later use her abuse to make her
stronger as a person able to fight slavery and ensure this would go on no longer. In the book Harriet
Tubman: The Road to Freedom Tubman s abuse is used as support by Clinton of why she would risk
her own life to help other. It was 1839 Harriet Tubman finally escaped from the plantation and was
free from its cruelties. Her husband at the time criticized her decision and did not join her in escaping.
This may have been justified for the backlash for running away was

Narrative Essay About A Masquerade Ball
Aahat Aahat Bloot! sounded the busy cars in Times Square, New York City. The clock struck twelve
and the street filled with people and preposterous, loud music. I don t know how I ended up here; I
remember leaving the New Years Masquerade Ball to head home before my stepmother returned, but
seems like I headed the wrong way. My attire for the ball was different; I now wore a red dress that
was clenching, tight with white stripes. I wandered around bewildered at the people and events
happening. Eventually, the mass of people from the street started to move towards this building, so I
followed behind the crowd. Immediately after we arrived in the building, the aroma of the place was
sickening. The room was filled with alcohol with a stench of marijuana; there were people
unconscious on the floor and some were throwing up. My mind was appalled at how unaware the
people were to their surroundings. Somehow I found myself in the kitchen of the place, they were
handing out drinks and bottles. The back of my mouth began to water for the drink, take into mind, I
haven t had anything to drink since the ball. To quench my thirst, I instantly snatched the ... Show

The Milling Machine And Drilling
In order to use the milling machine to manufacture a 2 in base by ½ in height by ¾ in depth piece, we
needed to be very precise and meticulous whit our dimensions. The process required measuring the
piece in every procedure. From the beginning, when we cut our piece from the steel bar using the
Band Saw machine. In the end when we drilled four different sizes of holes in the piece using two
different techniques; drilling using the milling machine and drilling by hand. Before we started
machining, we were instructed in how to perform measurements using calipers and micrometers, but
we mainly use micrometers during the procedure. Then, after a clear explanation of the procedure,
measurements and machine uses we performed our first cut using the Band Saw by cutting a small
piece from it. The edges of the steel piece weren t smooth so we machine it using the Milling machine,
just one side. In order to get the requirement dimensions we set the machine in Low speed because it
is better for rough cuts, high speed for small cuts.
The initial height was .680 in so two rough cuts were performed one of .100 in and a second of .060 in
both around 80 MPH. A third cut was necessary to get the proper height, which was only .020 in; it
was a simple cut so it was necessary a high speed that was around 200. After this, the height was
finally ½ in.
Now, we needed to get the correct width. It was required to be .750 in. The piece was .958 in, so it was
necessary to machine .208. First,

Paper On Conflict Theory
Conflict Theory is a social and economic factor. It is seen as inequality in gender, race, crime and
wealth. Conflict Theory was developed by the theorist Karl Marx, who believed that conflict theory is
split into two groups: the wealthy and the poor. Marx labels the wealthy as those who control and the
poor are labeled as those who are controlled by the government, law or other authority.
Conflict theory means you are labeled based on who you are. Karl Marx states that someone will be
labeled based on the social class they belong to. He also states that the society that you belong to gives
you the power in making laws. Those who are not privileged, are poor or are in a lower social class
suffer the consequences of being treated differently. Gender as defined by conflict theory implies that
men manipulate the power and privileges given to women. Conflict theorist argue that the only reason
these roles are persists is because the dominate group naturally works to maintain their power and
status (Boundless.com). In many cultures men have control over power and wealth and the woman is
forced to depend on man. That is why gender has caused conflict ... Show more content on

In this respect, we can think of our values as providing us with the background of our world, insofar as
this is morally connoted. In other words, our values are the framework that allows us to organize and

argue we understand our ideals as embodiments of our values, which are located in our moral space
insofar as they are ethical assessments concerning the best sort of life in relationship to different

topographic study of a terrain. This topography is one which produces a moral map , where the self is
located according to its connections to its environment the elements of our moral space being the
mountains, rivers and the other geographical features represented. In the present terms, our values are
our moral sources in that they provide us with the origin of the ethical strength needed to give a moral

What Do We Really Know About The Beginning Of Time
What Do We Really Know About The Beginning Of Time?
Most people take for granted important discoveries, such as the Big Bang. It is widely accepted that
the Big Bang created the universe, and while most people can explain the basic theory behind it, little
else is common knowledge. Calvin of Calvin and Hobbes called it The Horrendous Space Kablooie,
but many people do not grasp the enormous concept (Milne). How exactly do you prove how time
began? A writer for Scientific American put this subject into perspective: If you re religious, this is
like looking at God (Milne).

So close, in fact, that everything in the universe was concentrated into a single point he called the
primordial atom, which happens to be the name of his theory. He also said that to gain the outward
momentum we have today, the atom must have exploded like fireworks of unimaginable beauty
(Milne). Does this sound like the Big Bang Theory? That is because it is, although the name Big Bang
did not come about until Fred Hoyle jokingly called it the Big Bang while trying to oppose the theory
in 1950 (Encarta).
Everything makes sense, but how to prove such a beginning? In the 1960s, scientists realized that such
a hot and violent beginning must have left a vast wave of heat that can still be traced in small amounts.
Not long after this realization, two Bell scientists announced that they had discovered this heat wave,
called the cosmic background radiation. They both received the Nobel Prize in 1978 for their findings.
These first findings, however, had a few hitches. The cosmic background radiation was found to be
fairly smooth and even. It was hard for scientists to figure out how stars and galaxies grouped together
with such an even distribution. Once again, with the advance of technology and the challenge of a
good problem, scientists went to work. During a press conference in 1992, George Smoot and a few
other colleagues announced that they had found these temperature ripples in the cosmic background
radiation. So there you have it! The origin of

Analysis Of Big Pharma s Power Over Congress
Even if reference pricing when brought to market did work effectively without stifling innovation, the
process of creating a new act to instate a reference pricing law would be far too long and drawn out to
make such a risk worthwhile. Just getting such a bill to the point where Congress would vote on it
would be a long and winding road of pushing the bill through committees and rewriting parts of it to
get the house and senate to even consider passing it, likely taking close to a year if successful. And
even getting to the voting stage, such a bill would have a very low chance of passing through
Congress. This is because, as Mundy states, Big Pharma s power over lawmakers in both parties,

It, as stated earlier, has many of the same traits that commonly posed solutions like reference pricing

there only has been five attempts (petitions from patients, advocacy groups, or corporations) to get the

any administration so far (Arno and Davis). The lack of action by Congress can be attributed to
pharmaceutical company s hold on Congress as mentioned earlier, and the lack of public knowledge or
push for the act. With only five attempts by the public to get Congress to march in and not many
institutions really talking about the Bayh Dole Act, it s no wonder not much has been done. If more
attention were brought to the Bayh Dole Act through petitions and focus groups as Mundy discusses,
Congress could be more eager to exercise their march in rights. Also, if more government agencies

Crystallization Of Sulfanilamide Lab Report
Introduction
Crystallization is a technique that has been utilized as a part of the purification of substances. As often
as possible, when a solid substance (single compound) is dissolved in a solvent, it dissolves. After
adding a greater amount of the solid, a point in the long run is come to past which no further solid
dissolves, and the solution is said to be saturated with the solid compound. The concentration of the
saturated solution is influenced by the temperature, by and large a higher temperature bringing about a
higher concentration.
These events can be utilized as a methods for affecting separation and purification. In this way, if a
saturated solution at some temperature is cooled, the dissolved segment starts to isolate from ... Show

anyone or any computer connected to the internet (global network). Such activities range from causing
system errors program crashes, lockups, and system shutdowns to intrusion attempts to gain access to
private information or data, and even to steal personal funds. A decent hacker can gain total control
over a user s PC while it s in use. Generally, hackers disrupt the flow of normal everyday life by
manipulating security codes, capitalizing on security vulnerabilities to take advantage of many

It is a shadowy task but it is performed only to better protect consumer s physical and virtual property.
A majority consensus views hackers as evil people who do nothing by play around in computers all
day to improve their intrusion techniques in order to steal money, information, and cripple computer
systems for various reasons. Based on the second paragraph of this paper, the consensus is somewhat
flawed. The confusion stems from the definition of hacker and how they have been perceived.
Hacking was originally defined as the production of furniture with the use of an axe, but MIT
(Massachusetts Institute of Technology the origination of the replacement term hacker) define it as
students who pulled pranks with the use of a computer. In 1963, a group of MIT students tied up
phone lines from both the MIT and Harvard Campuses, turning lines inactive and using available lines
to make long distance phone calls that carried hefty phone charges. This was the first instance of the
term being applied to the young, and rising profession of hacking. It has since then been in permanent
use due to the evolutional path of hacking the aspect that was widely publicized.
In 1983, the 414s, a group of 6 computer hackers, broke into Sloan Kettering Cancer Center computer
systems and deleted a number of patient billing information. They, again, broke in Los Alamos
National Laboratory known for its research in nuclear technologies. The leader Neal Patrick earned a

Essay Biological Explanations of Criminal Behaviour
Crime theories are still in a development stage; it is an evolutionary process that continues to this day.
Crime is still a complex and misunderstood phenomenon with no concrete evidence when it comes to
human behavior. Throughout time there have been endless amounts of crime theories, few of which
revolve around biological explanations. We have Cesare Lombroso and the Positive School who
thought that criminals were genetically different from the rest of the general population, that they were
biologically aggressive, had criminal traits and/or born as criminals. There is also William Sheldon s
theory of body types, called the somatotype theory, that argued the mesomorph body type to be the
most prone to commit crime or deviant behavior. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Sheldon created the idea of the three different body types and concluded mesomorphs, the more
muscular and athletic body type, is more prone to commit crime and deviant behavior. Although he
did not take into consideration that many prisoners lift weights while in prison and that the more
muscular individuals usually win the fight (Cartwright, 2012). The twin adoption studies were used by
behavioral geneticists to identify genetic and environmental influences underlying human behavioral
and physical variations. Although there were many detractors of the twin adoption studies themselves
and their results. There were troubles finding subjects which lead to a reduced power of result and
inconsistency of the methods used for the operation. In contemporary biological explanations there are
still works appearing and being developed, such as, the role of DNA, nutrition, body chemistry and
ecological factors in human behavior (Gado, 2004). Most of these are either still being developed, like
DNA, or were discredited along with the works of Lombroso, like nutrition. Although biological
explanations may not have made a momentous improvement since the 18th century, arguments within
biological explanations have expanded. There are many theories that argue if human behavior is
predetermined at birth, or learned by influences. Nature versus nurture,

Stereotypes That Cause Muscle Dissatisfaction In Fashion...
Fashion articles, fitness magazines, and commercials drive a negative complex when it comes to body
image in society. Studies have shown that commercialized beauty has caused muscle dissatisfaction to
increase, appearance orientation to rise and positive comparisons to deplete. Mass media is the
number one contributor to the way a woman or man should feel about their bodies. All across the
globe, images are sent out of muscular men and petite woman, and this has caused a major
dissatisfaction in body image. In a study done by Hargreaves and Tiggemann, it shows the increase in
appearance comparison after men were shown television commercials that contained muscular
appearance ideals for men, and normal non appearance centered commercials. With one hundred and
four male undergraduates (age 18 35) in this study, and eighty four hours of commercial tapings the ...

Tiggemann gathered one hundred and forty four female undergraduates for the study (between 18 and
35 years) and presented them with fashion magazines either centered on thin ideals of beauty or an
advertisement containing only beauty products. In the study positive mood comparisons depleted the
more the women were shown fashion magazines containing thin body ideals. The negative mood
compared to the positive in the information given was an average of 15.66% in difference. Also, the
thin ideal images produced an average of 51.39% in body dissatisfaction compared to the control that
had an average of 46.42% when shown only products. Yes, models are what women and men look to
when consuming a product, but because that s what our society is based on, they should represent all
kinds of body types and not the one that seems social and culturally acceptable. Trends come and go

Transition In Willy Russell s Educating Rita
Transitioning into the new world may allow the individual to face new experiences that may become
obstacles or barriers they must overcome before being able to transition. During this transition,
individuals may also gain a new sense of self and others. Willy Russell s play, Educating Rita explores
obstacles as Rita transitions from an uneducated class to the educated and how it impacts her life as a
woman as she is forced to be someone she does not want to be (the role of women). Another text that
explores transition is a story by Gill Hickson, Identity in the face of terror from TEDx Talk. The story
involves terrorism attack in a subway which included Gill Hickson who nearly died to a bomber but
her transition from being a normal person ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When Rita enter through the doors and into the educational world in the opening scene, Rita finds it
difficult to open her professor s door (stage direction), this symbolizes a barrier between Rita s past
life as a married hairdresser and the world of literature Rita dreams to enter. The beginning stages of
Rita s transitioning does not initially go well for her as the middle working class she belongs to ties
her down and the fact that Rita does not have the knowledge to be able to overcome the differences of
her world and the intellectual world. During the initial stages of Rita s transitioning, obstacles stopped
her from moving forward to her goal. Near the end of Russell s play, Rita claims to have transitioned
successfully from the middle class to the educated class. Rita states to Professor Frank, I m not an
idiot now, Frank... I can do things for me own now... And I am careful. I know what I m doin ... I
know the difference between Somerset Maugham an Harold Robbins... . Rita s amplification of what
she knows and the tone of her understandings shows us that she has come a long way from being able
to distinguish the difference of popular poetry with literature . Her reference to a popular poet and
their texts that she used to previously considered perverted emphasizes the extent of what she can
understand . The struggle to learn the ways of the new world is

What About Bob Essay
What About Bob Critical Film Review I selected the movie What About Bob which is a comedic film
based on a therapist, his family, and his new patient. The therapists name is Doctor Leo Marvin and he
is a highly rated psychotherapist. His book is about to come out with the Title Baby Steps . This is the
approach he begins to take on his new patient who has been bounced around from psychologist to
psychologist. Dr. Leo Marvin soon finds out that his technique of Baby Steps is not working the way
he has intended with the new patient known as Bob Wiley. Bob has extreme phobias making it
difficult for him to leave his own house, when he finally ventures out he has to talk to himself in
reassurance that everything will be okay. He connects himself ... Show more content on

I did notice a flaw in the story line in relation to therapy, however. The flaw was that Bob seemed to
get progressively better at a very fast rate. In relation to his diagnosis of multi phobic personality
characterized by acute separation anxiety and the extreme need for family connections along with the
ones I found such as OCD, agoraphobia and dependent personality disorder. All of the problems seem
to go away with little to no time except for the dependent personality disorder which would not
happen in any typical case. The movie did portray the dependent part right because Bob always put his
happiness above the Doctor which fits what a person with dependent personality disorder would do.
Another thing that I noticed was that Dr. Marvin never tries to realize why Bob is actually at the
house. He never tries to have a session or get to the bottom of why he is at the house and will not
leave. Instead of being so wrapped up with getting rid of Bob, Leo should have tried to treat Bob.
With the right treatment Bob might have gone back to New York. Another major flaw, done for
comedic purpose, was that counselors are not supposed to attempt to kill their patients. This movie
was a pretty accurate portrayal of a patient with dependent personality, multi phobic personality
disorder, extreme need for family connections and acute separation anxiety. This movie is not only
funny to watch but also a psychological movie for counselors to

Barbarians In The Odyssey
Last but definitely not least, Polyphemos from the Odyssey is by far at the tip of that barbarians scale.
In the beginning passage about Polyphemus, he is presented as quite gentle with his heard of sheep
while milking them, this give no indication to him being uncivilized and violent (Homer, pg. 143). But
as the story progress, the audience can sense that he is less and less similar to their ideal of a Greek
citizens. Polyphemus expressed that the Cyclopes do not concern themselves with Zeus since they are
far better than the gods, this means he does not adhere to the same religious system as the Greeks do
(Homer, pg. 144). Not only that, Polyphemus does not adhere to the Greek custom of giving gifts and
hospitality to guests in the worst

Critical Race Theory And Conflict Theory Paper
Critical Race Theory and Conflict Theory Society contains groups with diverse interests, where
competing interests encourage conflict (Hutchison, 2013). The racial ideology in the United States is
the belief in a hierarchy of races with whites at the top and other races grouped underneath (Robbins,
Chatterjee, Canda, 2011). One way minorities are depicted as different from whites is through imagery
that creates detachment and seclusion between groups (Ortiz Jani, 2010).
Critical Race Theory Critical race theory (CRT) assumes this society was created to empower White
people; CRT is focused on transforming the relationships between race and racial power assembled by
law and culture (Delgado Stefancic, 2012). This theory suggests that racism is embedded in American
society (Helms, 2006), looking at how racial pride in being White can be exhibited in tolerable ways
or as White superiority (Delgado Stefancic, 2012). As a post modern theory, CRT encourages
structural approach by attending to the problems of a diverse society, instead of purely increasing
access to obtainable opportunities and resources (Ortiz Jani, 2011). History is ... Show more content

efforts, policy formulations, and macro level practice, striving to end oppression and discrimination
(Hutchison, 2013). A social worker explains persistent social inequality and social conflict in the effort
to help a client rise up against oppression in the critical race theory. These theories emphasize the

  • 2. Lily Owens Traits Lily Owens is the main character as well as the narrator in the novel The Secret Life of Bees, by Sue Monk Kidd. Lily is a fourteen year old white girl living in racially segregated Sylvan, South Carolina. The story is set in the mid 1960 s. When we are first introduced to Lily, she lives with her abusive father on a peach farm. We learn that she had accidentally killed her mother at the age of four, and has been made to feel guilty and unworthy of love. The story starts to develop when she helps her black babysitter, Rosaleen escape from prison. Lily loved Rosaleen like a mother. They use this opportunity to escape from Sylvan and her unhappy home. As Lily develops over the course of the story, we can see and learn about Lily s many unique ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By all rights, Lily should have been a person of no faith. She grew up in a home where she was abused and deprived of love. However it was Lily s innate faith that enabled her to survive. Lily truly believed that her mother had loved her. All along while living with T. Ray Lily would imagine all the nice things her mother used to do with her, like brush her hair and buy pretty dresses for her. It was this faith in her mother s love that got her through these tough times. Accordingly, it was Lily s faith in Rosaleen that caused Lily to help her escape from jail. Lily knew that Rosaleen was a good person who had always been there for her. She had faith that Rosaleen did not deserve to be in prison. It was also Lily s strong faith that allowed her to succeed in finding the answers to her mother s past. Lily had faith that the picture found of the Black Madonna with the inscription of Tiburon on the back would lead her down that path. She went to the town of Tiburon simply because it was written on the back of the picture. She wasn t even sure where she was going, but because of her tremendous faith she just went along. Lily had faith that the Boatwright sisters would have the answers regarding her mother. She also had faith that living with the Boatwright sisters was the key to her and Rosaleen s safety and security. As Lily adjusted to her life with the Boatwright sister s, and her job as a beekeeper she developed faith in the power of the beehives. The predictability and the complexity of their lifecycle gave her comfort as well as a renewal of her faith in life. The bees taught her a lot, and as a result she gave them her respect. At the end of the book Lily had to use her faith to believe in herself. Lily had to believe she was a person worthy of love and a family. Chlamydia Trachoma Chlamydia trachomatis is the bacterium that causes trachoma a chronic contagious infection of the cornea and conjunctiva and that trachoma is the world s leading preventable cause of blindness. Trachoma is caused and transmitted through multiple routes, including contaminated fingers, flies and the use of dirty face cloth (Hopkins et al., 2008, p.476; Dolin et al., 1997, p. 1511; Thylefors, 1992, p.90; Resnikoff, et al, 2004, p. 844). All of which are hygiene related, such as direct infection by flies, person to person from clothing used to wipe children s faces and by hand to face contact. Lack of facial cleanliness, poor access to water supplies, lack of good pit latrines and a high number of flies are some of risk factors for the disease. Innocence In Toni Morrison s The Bluest Eye In Toni Morrison s, The Bluest Eye Pecola Breedlove s life is told through the perspectives of her peers and acquaintances which portray her as a poor, unfortunate, and ugly black child. She goes about her life being beaten down at every opportunity, almost literally, and her singular wish for blue eyes signifies her silent plea for a life better than the one she s currently living. Pecola exists in her life like a doormat, to be stepped on, soiled and lost in the demented world that criticizes and dehumanizes her. Pecola s conversation with her own imagination gives the unfortunate circumstance that Pecola finally has a friend she talks to, but it s one she s had to create herself. Not only does this reveal that she s been abandoned by even characters who caused her harm, but also that her imaginary friend isn t formed from a child s imagination but is an escape from the darkness that she s witnessed. • 6. The Ring Fencing Of A Bank We now going to critically assess the statement that the ring fencing of a bank s retail banking services from their more risky investment, wholesale and proprietary banking activities, scheduled to take place in 2018 2019, is the last and most necessary reform of the UK banking system to prevent a recurrence of a major financial crisis such as the one the occurred in 2008 2010. Ring fencing is the separation of all the Bank s critical banking services from their investment and wholesale banking services . This means to segregate the retail banking from investment banking to protect consumers from systemic problems with the system. On 4th February 2013 the Financial Services (Banking Reform) Bill (the Bill) was introduced to Parliament. This Bill has sought to implement the ring fencing proposals of the UK Independent Commission of Banking (ICB), which is also known as the Vickers report. The Bill also represents the UK s response to wider international calls to structurally reform banks, such as the Liikanen reports proposals on reforming the structure of the EU banking sector . The ICB was announced after the formation of the coalition government in 2010, and its recommendations fell under three headings: retail ring fence; loss absorbency; and competition. The ICB said that the ring fence s purpose is to separate banking activities where the continuous provision of service is vital to the economy and to customers of a bank. This is order to ensure that the provision ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Analysis Of Pat Barker As A Memory A memory has different ways to function that varies from one person to another. The memory itself is defined as the faculty by which the mind stores and remembers information. Trauma is something else that can be attached to a memory and it is defined as a deeply distressing or disturbing experience. Memory plays a tremendous role in our lives as well as in our society. A memory can prevent us from making mistakes as well as it can haunt us to the point of breakdown. Are all memories worth to be reminded of? In Regeneration by Pat Barker as well as in The IMIGRANTS by W.G. Sebald we see a flow of narratives that underline traumatic memories. On this paper, we will focus our attention on Billy Prior, one of the characters in Regeneration, and Ambros Adelwarth of The Emigrants who are somehow fighting their memories. Billy Prior and Ambros Adelwarth both represent a strong problem of memory, they both have a clear memory of their past, but sharing them is one of the problems in the first place. Let begin by talking about Billy Prior, a conflicted and complicated character being a soldier who had had a difficult life, both at war and at home as he mentions to Rivers about the front: Look, you might like to think it s one big happy family out there, but it s not (Regeneration, pg. 53). His experience in the army was not as happy as he had imagined it could be since he believed that he did not really fit in his previous job as a clerk in a shipping office, but that he would ... • 8. The Conflict Perspective On Class Struggles The family is a social institution present in all human societies. A family unit is a group of people sharing a relationship based on biology, marriage, or adoption. The conflict perspective refers to the inequalities that exist in all societies. The conflict perspective originated from out of Karl Max s writings on class struggles. This perspective presents society in a different light than do the functionalist and symbolic interactionist perspectives. This perspective focuses on the negative, conflicted, and ever changing nature of society. Conflict theorists challenge the status quo, unlike functionalists who defend it, encourage social change, and believe that the rich and powerful force social order on the poor and the weak. When looking at the conflict perspective in reference to family, the family works toward the continuance of social inequality, whether on purpose or unknowingly. Wealthy families are able to keep their privilege social position for the members of that family, whereas poorer families are denied this status. This perspective is also more beneficial for men than women. It allows men to maintain their power position. Inequality between the sexes is a result of this family being patriarchal. Gender roles are significant. The roles of the men in the family are much more important than the roles of the women even if the women are more hard working than their male counterparts. After coming off a 10 year drug drought in the late 1970s, Merck put a large amount of money into research to continue its dominance in the prescription drug industry. The research first approach worked and since then Merck has increased sales significantly. Merck s mission was well stated by founder George W. Merck. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Cambell puts Merck in a difficult situation. First, Merck must choose a course of action that is ethically responsible and is consistent with its mission of making drugs to help people. Second, the option must address the reality that businesses must make a profit to stay open, so it should also offer some type of benefit for the company financially. One option for Merck is to proceed only with the drug Ivomec for animals and not to develop a drug for river blindness. There is simply not a large enough market that could afford any potential drug to help with river blindness. A significant amount of research has already been put into Ivomec and there is a high probability that Ivomec will be a financially successful product for the business. This option would maximize the business profits and minimize its risks. On the other hand, it is hard to justify such a course of action with the mission of the business. Millions of people would continue to suffer from river blindness. This option puts profits before the people and it could possibly result in a negative backlash from the media. If Merck were to pursue such a route, measures could still be taken to potentially help the victims of river blindness. I strongly believe that Congress should have term limits. Currently, members of the House of Representatives can serve two terms. These two terms equal six years. In a previous post, I discussed how the amendments should not be allowed to be changed with ease and the two term rule falls under the 22Nd amendment. If this amendment changed, it would allow a president to serve more than six years and that is way too much. Every president has a different idea of how they want the country ran and sometimes those ideas are not always the best. With the two term rule, a new president can come in and try their ... • 11. Plague And People Summary Disease and plague, something that has been with man since the beginning, always challenging them, forcing them to adapt and change. Plagues and Peoples by William H. McNeill is a book explaining the hardships, facts, and evidence of how plagues caused man to adapt and move. Documented encounters with disease, ranging from the height of the Chinese empire, to the medieval kingdoms in Europe and Spain, as well as the colonization of the Americas, and the great genocide of the native peoples of South America. The illusory idea that man had won the battle in 1974 was quickly proven wrong yet again, for man may never win the battle against disease, and forever be in a constant battle. McNeill s claim of fact as well as Ethos allowed him to write a consistent story including rhetoric devices, showing the true purpose of the informative book and conveying his main point of how plagues shaped the course of humankind development. An authors claim of fact must be backed with solid evidence ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... McNeill has this said drive, writing his book in a way that would explain what he is trying to say, which is how plagues have always, and will always be part of mans evolution. Infectious disease which antedated the emergence of humankind will last as long as humanity itself, and will surely remain, as it has hitherto, one of the fundamental parameters and determinants of human history (295). He states here exactly what he was trying to convey throughout the whole book. This shows control over the story and that McNeill knows what he wants people to hear, and what they should do with it. McNeill really gets the reader to think about plagues as a whole and their role in humanities evolution and adaptation. It gives people a broader understanding and opens up new doors to which they can learn from. This shows his claim of authority, or Ethos, of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. Risk And Risk Of Risk The risk score represents the criticality order of the risks, while the risk priority number is used for assessing risk in a project and generally do not have a meaning on their own. In this case some of the numbers are identical for the risk scores and priority numbers; however this is not always the case. The reason for the duplicate numbers happens when the value is estimated to be smaller and the impact is bigger in one risk than the other with a smaller impact. As you can see from the above charts it is critical for New Concepts to concentrate first and foremost on the quality and labor risks, followed swiftly by the financial risk. Risk Planning and Analysis Risk Planning and Analysis is used to develop risk responses which are options and actions to mitigate and reduce project threats. Risk responses delegate the owner for each potential risk and are agreed upon by all parties involved. There are four ways risk can be managed which are transferring risk, avoiding risk, reducing or mitigating risk and accepting risk. Transferring Risk: Risk can be transferred from an organization to its contractor and vice versa. This should be agreed upon prior to the project starting and detailed in the contract. All risk may not be transferred, sometimes only partial risk can be transferred. New Concepts may consider transferring risk to a contractor helping with coding when they do not believe they will not meet deadlines on a new system. Avoid Risk: Risk can be avoided ... By using abstract words to describe these long suffering patients, Mayes forces dramatic images into the reader s mind. While reading the book The Discovery of Poetry by Frances Mayes, I learned a lot about figurative imagery. Figurative imagery is used throughout Edward Mayes poem to make connections between two ideas we typically would not associate with one another. A concrete example of figurative imagery in Mayes poem is found in the line that reads, Men looking like they had been/attacked repeatedly by a succession /of wild animals. I know that these patients most likely had not been attacked by wild animals over and over again, but when the speaker plants these images in a reader s mind, the suffering that these patients have endured become more realistic to the reader. Sometimes using figurative imagery is much more effective than using a literal image. Mayes wants readers to know how ill some of the patients are. He goes on by describing the 200 miles of scars of a patient and how a boy who [had] shot his face off. Mayes figurative images make a stronger point because they are so blunt. He doesn t seem to beat around the bush; he tells every detail exactly how the speaker saw it. This poem would not give readers the same powerful emotions without the intense imagery and literary tropes Mayes utilizes. Toward the end of the poem, the speaker ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

What causes fibromyalgia? The history of fibromyalgia is truly very sad as this disease although very old has only recently received the attention needed to find the cause. A link between mitochondria and cytosol is provided by a group of proteins known as the mitochondrial carriers (MCs) family (Arco Satrustegui, 2005; F. Palmieri, 2004). MCs comprise a family of about 40 50 proteins, depending on the organism, and provide the main communication between mitochondrial matrix and extra mitochondrial spaces by transporting a wide range of metabolites, nucleotides and cofactors. In humans, MCs are encoded by the nuclear SLC25 family genes and are membrane embedded proteins that have to be imported into the i.m.m. (F. Palmieri, 2004). MCs are structurally related proteins of about 30 KDa that shared a tripartite structure with six hydrophobic domains. The analysis of the mitochondrial ADP/ATP carrier sequence, the first primary structure of a mitochondrial solute carrier to be reported (Aquila et al., 1982), established that the whole structure, of around 300 amino acids, could be divided into three tandemly repeated homologous domains, each of about 100 residues in length (Saraste Walker, 1982) (Fig.1). • 17. The Life Of A Woman, By Jamaica Kincaid Lucy, the eponymous character of Jamaica Kincaid s second novel, moves from Antigua to New York not in an arbitrary move, but in a calculated effort to explore her latent queer sexuality and gradually escape the gendered labor of her homeland. By working as an au pair for an upper class white woman named Mariah, Lucy trades birthing labor for domestic labor in a move that initially seems lateral, but serves as a potential gateway to freedom from caretaking that would have been inaccessible in Antigua. Unbridled from her mother, the American Lucy has opportunities to explore her sexuality without being deemed promiscuous, and has the ability to live with a woman she can have intimate relations with. Lucy has continuously disobeyed the performative prescriptions of heteronormativity in her life, but, as explained by the work of Rosamund King, her transgressions in Antigua are rendered invisible by a culture that believes women are incapable of sexual agency. America acknowledges Lucy s transgressions against heteronormativity, which lets her explore sexuality and gradually escape the obligations of gendered work. Lucy is escaping the obligations delineated by female performance. Lucy does not begin to experiment or play with queerness and gender in America, but remains unassimilated to beauty standards with the same intensity she had in Antigua. During her upbringing, her gender nonconforming behaviors and ideology went ignored in Antigua because of the common misconception that females are incapable of having sexual agency, intelligence, or usefulness beyond sustenence work and caretaking within the household (King). Lucy is allowed to kiss girls, like her best friend from school, and her does not fret over failing to enjoy acts of intimacy with males. Heteronormativity is not enforced by expectations of female and male pairings, but instead by the gendered division of labor. According to Nancy Hartsock s Feminist Standpoint, this tradition of forcing females into sustenance work should create a collective caregiver essence to women, and Lucy proves the antithesis. Viewers loved the authenticity that the show provided, and as a result, reality TV (RTV) became a mainstay of prime time television. Currently, there are more than 320 contemporary RTV shows that occupy the television screens of thousands of individuals. However, the portrayal of women and their regressed stereotypical characterizations on these RTV shows has become pervasive, specifically in the RTV genre. • 21. The Problems Of The Tableau Procedure As we mentioned in the introduction section, one of the time problems related to the Tableau procedure is checking if the branch is closed or not. The ordinary way for checking if a branch is closed is known as highly time cost process. We need an intelligent and simple way to construct and check the branches. One way, is to use ordered branches (i.e. to put the negated predicates in the branch first, and then not negated ones), but we still have a problem if the number of negated elements is much greater than the not negated ones. The following scenario is possible in this case, If we choose to check if the list contains neg X and X, if neg X is the last element in the negative ones, and X is the last element in the not negated ones, we have to process all the elements of the negated ones and in each time we process an element we start from the beginning of the list and process the whole branch to check if its not negated element is exist. Of course, a lot of time is consumed before tableau reaches neg X, and finds out that X is exist. branch. The third predicate closed / 1 check the lists in the branch if the negative one is shorter than the positive on the predicate checks if neg X is a member of the first list and X is a member of the second list; otherwise it checks if X is in the positive list and neg X in the negative one. The fourth improvement, and the main idea of our implementation, is to use the multi threading approach in implementing the tableau procedure. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

If he was not easily made jealous then Iago s deceitful lies and actions would have not have affected Othello as much as they did. Othello lies about his personal qualities because he is concerned with how his reputation will be presented after his death. It influences our day to day lives without us really knowing. Social media usually portrays one s life to be perfect, or it makes us feel like one s life needs to be perfect. For this reason being, social media can be a bad thing. In The Social Networks by Neal Gabler, he explains how media has taken away the meaning of friendship or anything real . He was surprised to find the judgmental nature both classes had for each other in an attempt to increase their own status in artificial ways. Though Hill Negroes arguably had a better quality of life than the many unemployed black residents of Boston, their unwillingness to acknowledge the menial nature of their jobs while they look down on the poorer blacks makes them just as snobbish as the racist whites. Violence, ultimately, became a dominant force in Malcolm s life when he moved to the Harlem ghettos. His anger and hostility was slowly directed from the black population towards white America, but at the same time he blamed the black community draining the black ghetto of wealth. Malcolm believed that wealthy white people not only exploited poor blacks on a daily basis, but also contribute to the profound lack of opportunity in Harlem. Unfortunately, Harriet Tubman lost three of two of her sister when they were sold by the slave owners. Clinton states Slave parents lived in abject terror of separation from their children. In the end when we drilled four different sizes of holes in the piece using two different techniques; drilling using the milling machine and drilling by hand. Before we started machining, we were instructed in how to perform measurements using calipers and micrometers, but we mainly use micrometers during the procedure. Then, after a clear explanation of the procedure, measurements and machine uses we performed our first cut using the Band Saw by cutting a small piece from it. The edges of the steel piece weren t smooth so we machine it using the Milling machine, just one side. In order to get the requirement dimensions we set the machine in Low speed because it is better for rough cuts, high speed for small cuts. A third cut was necessary to get the proper height, which was only .020 in; it was a simple cut so it was necessary a high speed that was around 200. After this, the height was finally ½ in. It is widely accepted that the Big Bang created the universe, and while most people can explain the basic theory behind it, little else is common knowledge. Calvin of Calvin and Hobbes called it The Horrendous Space Kablooie, but many people do not grasp the enormous concept (Milne). How exactly do you prove how time began? A writer for Scientific American put this subject into perspective: If you re religious, this is like looking at God (Milne). Cosmology is the study of the universe, its workings, how it was made, and what it will become. How the universe began has always been a wonder to humans. One ... So close, in fact, that everything in the universe was concentrated into a single point he called the primordial atom, which happens to be the name of his theory. He also said that to gain the outward momentum we have today, the atom must have exploded like fireworks of unimaginable beauty (Milne). Does this sound like the Big Bang Theory? That is because it is, although the name Big Bang did not come about until Fred Hoyle jokingly called it the Big Bang while trying to oppose the theory in 1950 (Encarta). Everything makes sense, but how to prove such a beginning? In the 1960s, scientists realized that such a hot and violent beginning must have left a vast wave of heat that can still be traced in small amounts. Not long after this realization, two Bell scientists announced that they had discovered this heat wave, called the cosmic background radiation. They both received the Nobel Prize in 1978 for their findings. These first findings, however, had a few hitches. The cosmic background radiation was found to be fairly smooth and even. It was hard for scientists to figure out how stars and galaxies grouped together with such an even distribution. Once again, with the advance of technology and the challenge of a good problem, scientists went to work. During a press conference in 1992, George Smoot and a few other colleagues announced that they had found these temperature ripples in the cosmic background radiation. So there you have it! • 37. Analysis Of Big Pharma s Power Over Congress Even if reference pricing when brought to market did work effectively without stifling innovation, the process of creating a new act to instate a reference pricing law would be far too long and drawn out to make such a risk worthwhile. Just getting such a bill to the point where Congress would vote on it would be a long and winding road of pushing the bill through committees and rewriting parts of it to get the house and senate to even consider passing it, likely taking close to a year if successful. And even getting to the voting stage, such a bill would have a very low chance of passing through Congress. It, as stated earlier, has many of the same traits that commonly posed solutions like reference pricing do. But it takes what these solutions have and expands upon it, by encouraging innovation rather than stifling it and offering the important power bestowed to Congress to march in when not properly enforced. Although stated in the act that Congress may march in when the guidelines of the act are not being followed (as they aren t), the government has never once exercised its right to march in, and there only has been five attempts (petitions from patients, advocacy groups, or corporations) to get the government to invoke march in rights (Mundy). Also, Bayh Dole has never been publicly discussed by any administration so far (Arno and Davis). The lack of action by Congress can be attributed to pharmaceutical company s hold on Congress as mentioned earlier, and the lack of public knowledge or push for the act. With only five attempts by the public to get Congress to march in and not many institutions really talking about the Bayh Dole Act, it s no wonder not much has been done. If more attention were brought to the Bayh Dole Act through petitions and focus groups as Mundy discusses, Congress could be more eager to exercise their march in rights. • 38. Crystallization Of Sulfanilamide Lab Report Introduction Crystallization is a technique that has been utilized as a part of the purification of substances. As often as possible, when a solid substance (single compound) is dissolved in a solvent, it dissolves. After adding a greater amount of the solid, a point in the long run is come to past which no further solid dissolves, and the solution is said to be saturated with the solid compound. The concentration of the saturated solution is influenced by the temperature, by and large a higher temperature bringing about a higher concentration. These events can be utilized as a methods for affecting separation and purification. A majority consensus views hackers as evil people who do nothing by play around in computers all day to improve their intrusion techniques in order to steal money, information, and cripple computer systems for various reasons. Based on the second paragraph of this paper, the consensus is somewhat flawed. The confusion stems from the definition of hacker and how they have been perceived. Hacking was originally defined as the production of furniture with the use of an axe, but MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology the origination of the replacement term hacker) define it as students who pulled pranks with the use of a computer. In 1963, a group of MIT students tied up phone lines from both the MIT and Harvard Campuses, turning lines inactive and using available lines to make long distance phone calls that carried hefty phone charges. This was the first instance of the term being applied to the young, and rising profession of hacking. It has since then been in permanent use due to the evolutional path of hacking the aspect that was widely publicized. In 1983, the 414s, a group of 6 computer hackers, broke into Sloan Kettering Cancer Center computer systems and deleted a number of patient billing information. • 40. Essay Biological Explanations of Criminal Behaviour Crime theories are still in a development stage; it is an evolutionary process that continues to this day. Crime is still a complex and misunderstood phenomenon with no concrete evidence when it comes to human behavior. Throughout time there have been endless amounts of crime theories, few of which revolve around biological explanations. We have Cesare Lombroso and the Positive School who thought that criminals were genetically different from the rest of the general population, that they were biologically aggressive, had criminal traits and/or born as criminals. There is also William Sheldon s theory of body types, called the somatotype theory, that argued the mesomorph body type to be the most prone to commit crime or deviant behavior. ... The twin adoption studies were used by behavioral geneticists to identify genetic and environmental influences underlying human behavioral and physical variations. Although there were many detractors of the twin adoption studies themselves and their results. There were troubles finding subjects which lead to a reduced power of result and inconsistency of the methods used for the operation. In contemporary biological explanations there are still works appearing and being developed, such as, the role of DNA, nutrition, body chemistry and ecological factors in human behavior (Gado, 2004). Most of these are either still being developed, like DNA, or were discredited along with the works of Lombroso, like nutrition. Although biological explanations may not have made a momentous improvement since the 18th century, arguments within biological explanations have expanded. All of the problems seem to go away with little to no time except for the dependent personality disorder which would not happen in any typical case. The movie did portray the dependent part right because Bob always put his happiness above the Doctor which fits what a person with dependent personality disorder would do. Another thing that I noticed was that Dr. Marvin never tries to realize why Bob is actually at the house. He never tries to have a session or get to the bottom of why he is at the house and will not leave. Instead of being so wrapped up with getting rid of Bob, Leo should have tried to treat Bob. With the right treatment Bob might have gone back to New York. Another major flaw, done for comedic purpose, was that counselors are not supposed to attempt to kill their patients. Critical Race Theory And Conflict Theory Paper Critical Race Theory and Conflict Theory Society contains groups with diverse interests, where competing interests encourage conflict (Hutchison, 2013). The racial ideology in the United States is the belief in a hierarchy of races with whites at the top and other races grouped underneath (Robbins, Chatterjee, Canda, 2011). One way minorities are depicted as different from whites is through imagery that creates detachment and seclusion between groups (Ortiz Jani, 2010). Critical Race Theory Critical race theory (CRT) assumes this society was created to empower White people; CRT is focused on transforming the relationships between race and racial power assembled by law and culture (Delgado Stefancic, 2012). This theory suggests that racism is embedded in American society (Helms, 2006), looking at how racial pride in being White can be exhibited in tolerable ways or as White superiority (Delgado Stefancic, 2012).
