The Stress Self Assessment Focused On My Stressors Essay
The Nature of Stress self assessment focused on my stressors. I learned that most of my stressors were
chronic; mainly dealing with school and socializing. The stressors were categorized as mental and
spiritual, although I did notice missing family and friends could fall under spiritual and emotional.
Another thing I learned was most of my stressors were caused from my move to Bismarck. For
example, living far from home, new job, and not having close friendships. This form of assessment
didn t work for me because I found I was focusing on the negative and felt more stressed after seeing
all my stressors in a list. The Signs of Stress assessment focused on my personal symptoms of stress. I
previously noticed these happened, but I never drew the connection to stress. For example, I normally
have very clear skin, but every once in awhile I ll break out. The effects of stress are physiological.
Now that I have a list of my signs of stress, I am able to recognize when situations like break outs
happen what is really going on. The Personality Survey was to determine if I had a hardi personality.
Before starting the assessment, I predicted I would be classified with the hardi personality because I
handle stress well. The categories I scored highest on were I consider myself an optimist , I approach
new situations with the idea that I will learn something valuable , and I am strong willed . The one I
resonate with most is the one about new situations because I moved to

Lord Of The Glies And John Locke s Lord Of The Flies
Jordan Early Nathan Carpenter PHIL 101.004 4 December 2017 John Locke Lord of the Flies In the
book, Second Treatise of Government , John Locke explains to the readers how a government should
be run and the freedoms that people should have. He also talks about the natural laws that people
should follow. Locke petitions a natural law of morality to govern people before they enter a society.
But in order to conserve themselves, people come together to lay a foundation for a government. Once
that has begun, the people agree on certain fundamental behaviors to follow. According to Locke, this
action breaks down their natural rights as human beings. This follows the movie, Lord of the Flies, as
boys are stranded on a remote island out at sea. The boys start out in Locke s state of nature. Due to
them being all alone, they work together to survive. While beginning their new life as a uniform tribe,
they inevitably come to an unacceptable state of war that gives rise to complete and utter chaos on the
island. John Locke describes the state of nature as a state all men are naturally in, and that is, a state of
perfect freedom to order their actions, and dispose of their possessions and persons, as they think fit,
within the bounds of the law of nature, without asking to leave, or depending upon the will of any
other man (§4). The state of nature is a state of equality, where not one person has a sense of power
over other people. It is the time before a society

Essay on Standard Machines Pricing
I. Who should take the blame for getting Standard Machines Corp into the crisis it faces vis à vis
closing on a major sale with an established account?
The blame for Standard Machine Corp can be directed in one of three ways:
Industry: One could argue that innovation in the machine tool equipment industry has been stagnant
and resulting caused customers to view machines as commodities and compete on price. Another
thought is that the industry allowed a low cost player to enter and therefore put the premium priced
equipment manufactures in a position of having to rationalize their price. Unfortunately, competition
on price erodes industry margins and profits.
Standard Machine Corp Management: The fact that a major account has ... Show more content on

Although we do not believe that it is wise for Standard Machine Corp to lower their prices, essentially
commoditizing their products, it is important for them to manage their customer relationships on an
individual basis. By this we mean that Standard should find ways to justify their price premium. This
may be done by offering packages uniquely customized to retain their long term clients. Specifically,
for long term customers like Occidental, Standard must justify their $22,000 premium over their
competitors within the market.
One way to address this issue would be through rebates. Standard could offer customized rebate
packages to its premium customers, like Occidental. Although they are, in effect, lowering their prices
for Occidental, they are not sending a negative signal to the market. An outright price decrease could
create a price war, where their competitors continue to drive down their own prices, further
commoditizing Standard s line of products. A rebate would offer an incentive for Occidental to
purchase, because the company knows that they will be rewarded on the back end.
Another way for Standard to remedy this pricing situation is to offer additional services along with its
milling machine in order to further differentiate themselves from their competitors. Standard s
package could include an unlimited warrantee for a specified amount of time greater than that of its
competitor, and an increase in on site

PART A
Homelands as a cultural group closely linked to a particular group
Introduction
William and Walton Roberts (2013) defined homelands as places that people have strong feelings
about and are recognized with. Schnell (2000) argued that homelands involve the emotional bonding
of a self conscious group to a particular area of land, attachments that buttress a person s identity as a
member of a group and such attachments are immensely rooted in the visible landscape of the
homeland. William and Walton Roberts (2013) explained that homelands involve typical ethnic
characters, recognizable self consciously aware groups, cultural regional landscape, emotional
connection of the group with the region and a level of institutional control of the region. William and
Walton Roberts (2013) further discussed that homelands are mostly ethnically based regions with
recognizable cultural landscapes that are best understood as dynamic results of specific human and
environment relations. William and Walton Roberts (2013) discussed that cultural regions were
initially used as a means of establishing some semblance on a supposedly diverse cultural
phenomenon.
Furthermore, William and Walton Roberts (2013) defined cultural regions as a section of the world
where the inhabitants tend to have in common most of the components of culture such as, related
languages, similar ecological

True Dimensionality of Space-Time
Allan Poe states in his essay on cosmology titled Eureka, that space and duration are one. To many,
this is portrayed as the first known instance of suggesting space and time to be joined together as one
thing. Albert Einstein s 1905 theory of special relativity is the very beginning of a theory related
concept of spacetime, but the first mathematical theory of spacetime actually created by one of his
own early teachers named Hermann Minkowski. He created the concept of Minkowski Space which is
the earliest recommendation to the treatment of space and time as two separate entities of one unified
whole. The idea of Minkowski space has led up to special relativity being viewed more so in a
geometrical way rather than a scientific and mathematical way. Minkowski space is described as the
mathematical formation for which special relativity can be conveniently formulated. In this setting the
three dimensions of space are combined with one dimension of time to create a four dimensional
whole expressed together as spacetime.
It would be considered extremely important to consider the events that space and time can ultimately
affect each other and how space and time are used in cosmological research. However, before
touching base with the concept of space time, it seems appropriate to tie together the two basic types
of dimensions and how they are ultimately applied to each other. Space time is closely linked with
Albert Einstein s theory of special relativity, mathematician

Analysis Of The Lottery
Since reading The Lottery by Shirely Jackson, I ve been thinking more about culture, traditions, and
perspective. Not just that, but how it can sometimes take adopting an unbiased, non judgmental, or
outside perspective in order to see things for what they really are. The way that the narrator in this
story adopts such a position allows for a clearer view of the events of the story.
In The Lottery, the narrator speaks to us in a non participant and objective manner. We hear and see
events unfold from an outside, fly on the wall , perspective. No critique or judgement on the events is
provided by the narrator; we only can ascertain judgements and feelings from what the characters do
and say. By allowing us this viewpoint, we can make ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Pack of crazy fools, he said. Listening to the young folks, nothing s good enough for them. Next thing
you know, they ll be wanting to go back to living in caves, nobody work any more, live hat way for a
while. Used to be a saying about Lottery in June, corn be heavy soon. First thing you know, we d all
be eating stewed chickweed and acorns. There s always been a lottery, he added petulantly. Bad
enough to see young Joe Summers up there joking with everybody. Some places have already quit
lotteries. Mrs. Adams said. Nothing but trouble in that, Old Man Warner said stoutly. Pack of young
fools. (257).
Tradition and ritual customs hold a really powerful sway. In the story, we read about how things have
subtlety shifted overtime in the ritual, or the artifacts used during it, yet it continues on. It s an
accepted norm that no one wants to upend. This made me think about how our cultures customs have
shifted with time, but how many aspects remain unchanged. It could be for nearly anything, such as
how holidays are celebrated, or rituals like weddings, or how challenges to old norms are often viewed
with intrepidation or skepticism.
If the author would have adopted a participant point of view in this story, we probably would have
gained more insight into the rationales for holding an annual lottery to stone someone. All we can
ascertain is that the practice is an old

The Stamp Act, Boston Massacre And The Boston Tea Party
The American Revolution, one of the most significant events in our world s history, has established a
huge impact on not only life back in the eighteenth and nineteenth century but our society today. The
Acts of Parliament highly benefited the British but did not afford those same rights to the colonists
until the formal issuing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4th, 1776, in which colonial
freedom was granted. The most controversial issue is which group caused it; a result of propaganda by
the colonists. Multiple acts and protests contributed to this war, three influential ones being the Stamp
Act, Boston Massacre and the Boston Tea Party.
One of the major causes was the Stamp Act in 1765. This was issued by Parliament to tax every piece
of printed paper colonists used. Other documents such as newspapers, playing cards and any form of
printed publication were also taxed. Money collected by these taxations were used to pay costs of
defending the American frontier. Colonists viewed this act of Parliament as means to raise money
without legislative approval. ¨Reactions to the Stamp Act included riots and boycotts of British goods.
Crowds calling themselves Sons of Liberty prevented stamped papers from being unloaded from
British ships.¨ Another organization called the Daughters of Liberty was formed to promote
production of homemade cloth, not imported by the British. Nine colonies met in New York City to
create a statement in which the Stamp Act would be repealed.

will be discussed will be its original discovery in 1967, it s addition research that was completed in

discoveries from this site and what it means for idea of the first appearance of the modern human
(Fleagle et al., 2008).
In 1967 in the Lower Omo Valley near Kibish, Ethiopia along the Omo river, a team from the Kenya
National Museums, led by Richard Leakey an anthropologist and conservationist, did an initial
exploration which led to the discovery of several stone tools, hominin fossils, and various other skull
fossils of mammals. In this expedition the team found parts of what would be known as Omo I and
Omo II. The finds for Omo I comprised of the mandible, dentition, several parts of the cranium, and a
considerable portion of the post cranial skeleton. Omo I s finds has been described as being a modern
skeleton of Homo sapiens. Omo II comprised of an almost intact neurocranium, which has been
described as primitive remains most closely resembling Homo erectus (Fleagle et al. 2008). At that
time in 1967, researches faced a difficult time establishing an accurate age of these remains due in part
to the confines of technology. The team at this time decided to use a rather controversial method that
looked at radiometric dates on shells from a Nile oyster (Etheria elliptica) bank

The Grapes of Wrath Essays
The Grapes of Wrath The Grapes of Wrath is set in the horrible stage of our American history, the
Depression. Economic, social, and historical surroundings separate the common man of America into
basically the rich and poor. A basic theme is that man turns against one another in a selfish pride to
only protect themselves. For example, the landowners create a system in which migrants are treated
like animals and pushed along from one roadside camp to the next. They are denied decent wages and
forced to turn against their fellow scramblers to simply survive. The Grapes of Wrath tells the story of
two types of families in that the Joads are a factual one and the body of migrant workers as the other.

Tom, though, is a very complicated individual who turns out to be a tremendous asset and burden to
the family. His parole causes the family an unneeded worry, but does get work that helps the family.
He is the main protagonist for his family and the main follower of Jim Casy s philosophy on human
nature. Jim is much more of a talker and idealist, and he actually puts what he preached into action.
Jim Casy is frequently compared with Jesus Christ and his lifestyle of preaching and leading people.
As well as sacrificing himself for Tom and the Joad family which upholds his common held belief.
Tom carries Jim s message after his death and aids others with it. The Joad family, along with Jim
Casy, shows the benefit of people uniting in order to accomplish goals and this is a lesson that the
reader can take away from this novel. The setting is so important to the novel because it sets the role
and background of the characters. View of the Depression then come from a man just off of parole or a
grandfather who is getting old and to weak to be the backbone of the family. The Depression that has
hit nailed the common man and jobs are scarce. This is the binding factor between everyone in the
novel that most people are down in the dumps. The main theme of the book is the character of people
in that time. How people bonded and rejected one another in a time of such hardship and
demoralization. I think every character played a part in the

The Trump s Political Rise During The Presidential...
The Trump Effect
Donald Trump s meteoric political rise during the Presidential Election of 2016 put attention on the
media and the way they covered the election and will forever change both politics and media going
forward. The media was shown to be a bias, ratting chasing, and corrupt extension of the political
parties. We will encompass the entire campaign from the June 2015 announcement that he was
running, covering the primaries, then to the convention, along the path of the general campaign, and
finally in the post election coverage. We will look at the financials, the main stream medias role, and
changes that are necessary going forward.
Let us start with a recap. On Tuesday June 16, 2015 Donald J. Trump came down the escalator at his
Trump Tower property and announced the official launch of his presidential campaign. Much like
everything else he did in this campaign it was mired in controversy as this was the venue of the
infamous statement and I quote when Mexico send their people they aren t sending their best their
rapist, their murders and drug dealers... Initial reaction to Trump s announcement was mixed. Some
thought it was a P.R stunt thinking he would quit after a few weeks, others started calling foul on his
bigoted and racist statements against Mexicans, and yet some where excited having longed for a
common sense business minded person to run the country.
Trump started the Republican Primary Process against 18 opponents. The top ten were invited to

Exercise Test Of Fasting Blood Glucose Levels
Following the establishment of fasting blood glucose levels subjects in the oral glucose tolerance test
consumed a 10 ounce beverage that contained 100 grams of glucose. Over the next 2 hours subjects
repeated the same method as used in the control test to test their blood glucose levels 4 more times.
These 4 tests were conducted at 30 minute intervals and all readings were recorded for later
examination.
Physical Exercise Test After recording their fasting blood glucose levels subjects in the exercise test
group transitioned to the gym. At the gym each individual engaged in 45 minutes of moderate
exercise. Although no strict controls were put in place to regulate the type or intensity of exercise
conducted individuals generally engaged in a reasonably strenuous amount of exercises. Most
individuals conducted either cardiovascular exercise such as running and biking or strength training
such as calisthenics or weight lifting. Immediately upon completion of the exercise period, subjects
returned to the laboratory to conduct a second blood glucose test. Utilizing the same method as
described in the control test the subjects examined and recorded their post exercise blood glucose
levels. All data from both sets of tests were then compiled and recorded in a Microsoft excel file. The
results were then examined by calculating the mean and standard deviation for each set of data. In

Support Alone Essay
The usefulness of just using support alone will only tell you how many times each item appear
together based on the transactions in the bakery. The support values are smaller than I expected. The
highest support is 0.053 (Apricot Danish Cherry Tart). So the highest frequency an item in the bakery
appears together is only 5.3%. This might be the case because depending on a customer s sweet tooth
the purchase may be different or the bakery has a different special going each day. I do not believe we
can judge itemsets just on support alone, again because it is only base on when items appear together.

The Great Lakes Region By Richard White
Richard White provides a refreshing perspective on the Great Lakes region during the colonial and
early national periods in regards to the developing relationships between the intrusive French, British,
Americans and the indigenous Native Americans. The Middle Ground: Indians, Empires and
Republics in the Great Lakes Region effectively links Native American history to broader themes in
American history. He presents a convincing argument of how the Middle Ground, a place the French
called the pays d en haut, allowed for mutual accommodation and an acculturative social solution to
develop out of the misunderstandings and the new meanings given to older institutions. White looks to
this area to show how Native Americans and Europeans together constructed a complex and dynamic
world that became the multiethnic society of early America. White has written a remarkable book that
further enriches the historiography of the Great Lakes region and gives us a fuller understanding of
this complicated world that underwent profound historic change. White presents an interesting
introduction that demonstrates the extremely complex subject and multiple influences that defined the
middle ground. He does not state an obvious thesis in his introduction but rather details the larger
themes he intends to analyze within the context of his book. He debunks the American myths related
to the period of European expansion in the Great Lakes region by noting that contact was not a battle

Immanuel Kant And Mary Wollstonecraft
What it takes to be free does not necessarily mean escaping tangible shackles that binds around our
wrists and ankles, but this could be removing the limitations that are put on specific people based on
their status or gender. Immanuel Kant (1784) approaches the theme of being free in An Answer to the
Question: What is Enlightenment? that is about reaching a psychological state, which is to able
express and act freely without being guided by the monarchy. However, Mary Wollstonecraft s (1792)
A Vindication of the Rights of Woman conveys being free as giving females identical opportunities
and treatments that males receive. Although both these authors approach what it takes to be free in
their respective texts, however, they discuss about separate matters regarding this topic.
There are many viewpoints of being free and the measures it takes for these restrictions to be removed
for freedom. Immanuel Kant and Mary Wollstonecraft represent a separate matter of individuals being
restricted within a boundary. They both stand for a particular group of people that exists within the
world. Kant believes that the human population subconsciously feel that they have no reason to
express their emotions or think independently, and as a result they develop a fear of being criticised or
judged upon in society by those who hold great power. He proposes that a person needs to gain
courage that is a requirement of Enlightenment to think and act freely, but expressing one s

How To Write An Essay On Puerto Rico

The Importance Of Success In Math
Freshmen college students struggle with math because they re still using their high school studying

Learning to love math by Judy Willis explains how a positive attitude in math class helps. According
to Willis, The first step to success in math is a positive attitude. Math is hard and it takes effort and
perseverance. College math is the type of math one would fail much easier. Math is usually the hardest
subject for the majority of freshmen college students. A poll explains how people would choose any

One reason why the plot is able to effectively create suspense is through utilizing foreshadowing. For
example, the film opens with Grace, the mother, screaming as Grace wakes up, foreshadowing fear in
the movie. In addition, the dialogue plays a role in foreshadowing as well, such the repeated allusions
to the day [Grace] went mad . As Grace slowly uncovers clues as to what is going on in the house, the
repeated sightings of doors being unlocked and sounds being made keep the audience on the edge of
their seats. Specifically, the incident when Grace hears piano music being played in the middle of the
night fully cements in the audience s mind that there are ghosts without revealing the true identity or
purpose of the ghosts, adding suspense rather than answering questions. However, when it is revealed
that Grace, Anne, and Nicholas are, in fact, ghosts and the other family is alive provides a tie in to all
of the suspense. Suddenly, even the smallest detail, such as descriptions of the old lady who can

their own experiences in life. This notion of the learning cycle in which he was influenced by the ideas
of three other theorists (Piaget, Dewey, and Lewinian) called it Experiential Learning Theory. Kolb s
theory was based on how people learned by imputing information and processing the information.
Within this two abilities, there are four steps in which Kolb s believe the learning process occurs. The
first one he calls concrete experience , in which one actually does the learning right then and now. The
second one is reflective observation when the learner thinks about what they did as a reflection of the
experience. The next step is the abstract conceptualization , where the learner makes a generalization
of the experience. The last step is active experimentation , where the learner puts to practice his/her
understanding and adapts to it. The learner does this by taking all the first three steps of the learning
cycle and seeing the results (pg. 30). Learning is a process in which individuals learn through trial and
error. This process can then be reused with our prior experience to strengthen the outcome of our first
experience. It is shaped as a cycle in the way we process information cognitively. This is how I
understood of the reading on Kolb s Experiential Learning Theory.

Chronic Disease: Asthma Outline
I. Introduction: Looking at Asthma and breaking it down to fully understand the chronic disease.
II. Description of Asthma: A. Meaning of Asthma 1. Asthma as a word means, To breathe hard. Just as
the definition of the word, people with asthma have a hard time breathing, tightness in the chest and
wheezing can occur. It is also a chronic disease of the respiratory system, which the respiratory
passages in the lungs become oversensitive and overactive. (i) B. Frequency of Asthma Occurrence 1.

Factors 1. Educational level Those with less of an education will tend to have more problems with
understanding all that has to do with Asthma. They will not be educated enough to take care of
themselves or others. 2. IQ If differences in IQ across the world are largely due to exposure to
infectious disease during childhood, then reducing exposure to disease should increase IQ.(8) C.
Social Risk Factors 1. Single family household varies to home to home due to the fact of different type
of environment the family is living in. For example; smoking, pet in the home (especially in the
bedroom and/or bed), school, day care, or work environment, moisture, dampness, and humidifier us,
mold and musty odors in any part of the home, and even cockroaches in the home. Those are some of
the things that need to calculate for the percentage of increased risk. The more of the examples
increases then the higher the percentage. 2. Family size also plays a role. The bigger the family, the
higher the risk will be for the family. D. Environmental Risk Factors 1. The bigger the population and
the more it is crowded will increase the risk factor. Just like in section C, social risk factor it rather
goes hand in hand. 2. There were significant differences between geographic

Susan Sontag Essay
This theory reading has taken a different approach compared to the first theory reading. As some
readings like to dive into the make up behind a photograph, the second theory reading looked at the
camera and by using this camera what it can inform. Susan Sontag talks about how in today s world
and the past, how everything has been photographed. Photography was a way to escape what was
going on around us. Once the photo was taken, Sontag has stated it guaranteed the photo longevity, if
not immortality (Sontag). She then dives into the difference between paintings and movies compared
to what photographs display. Paintings and movie can lose some of the quality while a photograph
does not. The next major aspect focused on was the use of photographs. Besides the idea of
immortality, photos today are used for everyday jobs. These ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

It is amazing how we can fully trust a photograph simply because it gives you second hand encounter
of what was going on. In today s world, I find it amazing that this proof can actually be tampered with.
Thinking about the artists who are experts in changing certain photographs, they could easily change a
photograph to show a different aspect which occurred. A photograph passes for incontrovertible proof
that a given thing happened (Sontag). If an individual has committed a crime, all the police need is a
photograph or a film which shows the individual clearly and they will face the crime fully. The
increase in technology is a positive and a negative. The idea of people who are experts in the new
technology changing the photograph thus changing the idea of the photograph is the only negative
from this idea of using photographs as evidence. We love to take photographs as much as we can, if
they can be used for aspects such as this we could help change the way our world is possibly run.
However, the photographs need to stay loyal and

Abstinence In 1984
In the Novel 1984 by George Orwell there are many connections to modern day society including the
anti sex league which reflects abstinence only sex education. Abstinence only sex education has been
a growing concern in the country lately with instance only advocate Bristol Palin announcing her
pregnancy with her second child out of wedlock.
In the novel the junior Anti Sex League is a club to teach teen girls not to have sex. The Junior Anti
Sex League tells women you shouldn t have sex for pleasure and that sex is to be an unwanted act
only necessary for procreation This is similar to abstinence only sex education which teaches not
having sex outside of marriage, similar to the anti sex league abstinence only education often teaches
that abstinence as the only morally correct option. Similar to the Anti Sex League abstinence only sex

the abolition of sex entirely. Intercourse was to be looked on as a slightly disgusting minor

Goldman Sachs has shipped approximately 500,000 American jobs overseas in the past few years.

should receive those tax cuts. Financials have revealed that oversea companies receive government
procurement contracts worth billions of dollars along with their tax breaks. Not only are these
businesses getting cuts on their finances they get financial aid to help them. This money comes from
American taxpayers, and it goes towards a business that does not provide any help towards the country
that is assisting it (Aflcio). The jobs that they do offer are located halfway around the world; this does
no good for the hard working American. These taxpayer financed benefits usually come with very few
strings attached; allowing companies to skim additional profits by performing publicly funded work
overseas (Aflcio). I believe that, in this day and age, companies are always trying to take advantage of
the government and find loop hole. Laws concerning the distribution of government procurement
should be reformed to not encourage the shipping of jobs overseas, but to promote the growth of a
business in America with the assistance of government procurements paid for by the taxpayers who

Industrial Revolution And The Industrial Age
The Industrial Revolution affected all aspects of American life, and it provoked more changes than
just those in the factories. How one experienced the Industrial Revolution depended on where one
lived. By 1900, more than a third of America s people lived in cities, and city populations were
growing twice as fast as the population as a whole. Between 1870 and 1920, the number of Americans
living in cities increased fivefold, from 10 million to 54 million. Most of the massive industries of the
Industrial Age emerged in the North. Because the work was there, these cities ballooned into
metropolises. And as the cities of the North grew, economic disparities between the wealthy and the
poor became more pronounced; the corporations of the Industrial Age generated enormous fortunes
for a handful of people, leaving most industrial laborers living in poverty. Most of the people living in
these growing cities were workers working in the new factories of the Industrial Age. The
manufacturers sometimes provided company housing close to the factories so that the entire work
force could walk to work. The independent builders sought quick profits and got away with throwing
up inferior houses because they had no building codes. Those developers also carved up previously
built single family homes into multiple unit dwellings called tenements, which often had thin walls
and frequently lacked windows as well. These kinds of close quarters led to communal childcare
networks, and they also

The United States of American and the Kuwaiti life
The United States of America is far most known as the best place for a person to live in and enjoy a

problems in their life but others do. Kuwait on the other hand, which is located in the Middle East

anything that they have to worry about and the only bad weather they get is rain and sand storms

Analysis Of The Poem Chris Orr
Chris Orr was a good respectful young kid, there was nothing wrong with him except he was a heroin

remember growing up in San Clemente, CA and waking up each morning and walking out on to my
family deck and looking out onto the beach, thinking to myself how lucky my family was for the
opportunity to be by the beach. I loved the beach, the feel of the ocean s spray upon my face, the sand
beneath my toes, but it wasn t until heroin began to directly affect the lives of people around me that I
truly began to understand that something darker lingered along the shoreline. For example, Chris was
my friend, we grew up together, we played together as kids, and as we got older, we partied together.
For a short while Chris even lived at my house. His sweet personality and loving heart made him hard
to resist. No matter how much we loved him, he had a problem and he just couldn t seem to overcome
it. Finally, Chris lost his struggle with addiction in 2002. Many people mourned the light that was
extinguished on that day, thought of what could have and what should have been done differently to
prevent such a tragic death. Since his death, I have lost several friends to heroin use and the numbers
are growing in this small beach community. In examining the reasons behind the recent increase

Analysis Of Stephen Crane s A Girl Of The Streets
Stephen Crane has come to be considered the forerunner of western naturalism (Perosa 94). His works
portray the harshest of realities, from the crime and disease ridden streets brought to life in Maggie, to
his take on the atrocities of battle in The Red Badge of Courage. Crane pushed his strong messages of
environment being a determining element in life, and his belief that there are no heroes, only different
individuals in different situations. Crane himself was part of the 19th century movement for
naturalism in art, or the contemporary ideas of science and society, which rejected the idealization of
experience and adopted an objective and often uncompromisingly realistic (my italics) approach to art
(Oxford Dictionaries). In Maggie: A Girl of the Streets, Stephen Crane embarked upon his first
endeavor of writing a naturalistic novel. Rather than choosing to write a fiction about documented
events in the slums of New York, Crane crafted the depression of the bowery from his own mind,
based on his observations and understanding (Pizer 110). Maggie serves as an epitaph as Crane s first
novella in a long list of natural and realistic products. The reality of the world around each of the
characters is what makes Maggie a truly naturalistic story. The Johnsons Maggie s family live in an
impoverished apartment building with minimal essential items. Maggie s family is ravaged by a
drunkard mother and a violent brother. Her father and younger brother died

Antonia Abbey et. al. To examine the topic properly I should start with my own understanding of the

One fact that the authors point out is that youths are beginning to drink at lower ages and with more
frequency. The statistics range from 47 percent of high school students drinking heavily to 10 million,
28 percent of children that age, reporting alcohol use in the last thirty days. College students reflect
those same statistics. Concern is raised about how alcohol use patterns developed in the teen years is
not an issue that time resoles. The article then bridges into alcohol s effects on teens. The absorption
of alcohol under normal circumstances is first explained, with there being a set amount of alcohol
being removed each hour and if that amount is exceeded alcohol will continue building up in the
blood. Alcohol has numerous effects on the body it can impair the brain s ability to learn and
remember events, and reduce a person s motor controls, also alcohol releases the happiness hormones,
endorphin and dopamine, encouraging continued alcohol use. Using large amounts of alcohol can
poison the brain over time which is a large issue during this important time of brain development.
Unfortunately, due to their smaller bodies and non tolerance alcohol effects teenagers more than it
does adults, this leads increases the risk of Alcohol Poisoning and means teens become drunker faster.

Personal Health Record And Patient Portal Use
Personal Health Record and Patient Portal Use
The Personal Health Records (PHRs) are the innovative solution to the problems associated with
fragmented communication and lack of interaction among the Medical Record Systems (EMRs)
(Henriksen et al., 2008). It allows patients to access their healthcare data in the secure environment
and increases patient s engagement in medical care. The PHRs are also known as patient portals. They
help patients in getting relevant medical data from their provider. In spite of recent policy efforts to
develop the usage of health informational technologies and increase the accessibility of PHRs in
different health institutions, PHR adoption level remains relatively low overall.
The PHR is defined as based on the Internet set of tools that makes it possible for people to coordinate
and access their lifelong health data, and makes some parts of it available and accessible to those who
need it (Segall et al., 2011). PHRs may be useful, especially, for people with chronic diseases who
expect to receive some advantages from using PHRs to learn and monitor their health problems. PHRs
allow care coordination among clinicians, ensure patients the opportunity to access and search their
medical information, support them in managing health, and make them be active participants in the
decision making process. The early adopters of PHRs could be chronically ill patients because most of
them are active users of the internet and computers. Therefore, PHRs

dominant, and immortal. He promotes the image that men should be unfeeling, undoubting, and all

The Death Of Medical Complications
As if addiction and an overdose death are not bad enough, there are many other dangers stemming
from the abuse of opioids. BODILY DAMAGE FROM AN OVERDOSE Death is only one of the
possible outcomes of an overdose. Low oxygen levels from respiratory depression can lead to a stroke,
brain death, heart attack, and damage to other organs (such as the pancreas, liver and kidneys). These
complications are common, under appreciated, and under reported by news media. Medical
complications can be catastrophic: A stroke can lead to brain death that ultimately leads to physical
death. A stroke, when not fatal, can impair any of the five senses, such as the ability to smell, taste,
see, and speak. Even the person s ability to move can be impaired because the brain controls the
movement of our muscles. A heart attack is also possible. Like the brain, the heart requires a regular
supply of oxygen to function properly. Interrupting the oxygen supply can lead to a heart attack, even
in younger individuals with healthy hearts. A heart attack can be deadly or lead to permanent damage
to the muscles or the valves of the heart, typically resulting in congestive heart failure and possibly the
need for a heart transplant (http://wb.md/1ITcAc2). Inadequate supply of oxygen to other organs such
as the kidneys, liver, and pancreas can also lead to permanent damage to those organs. PHYSICAL

Inaccuracies In Saving Private Ryan
Saving Private Ryan is considered one of the most historically accurate war movies ever produced.
However, no movie could correctly duplicate the struggle that was faced and the fear that was shared
among all of the soldiers. The movie is mostly centered around Private Ryan, a soldier during World
War II, whose three brothers have died in combat. Not wanting his mother to lose her last son, eight
men are given the mission of finding Ryan so he may be sent back home. The movie shows the
difficulties that these eight men face while searching and still trying to win the war. Surprisingly,
Saving Private Ryan is loosely based on a true story. Like Ryan in the movie, three of the four Niland
brothers were reported dead and the last one was sent home so the family would not lose all of their
children. They later discovered that one of the other brothers was alive after he escaped from a
Japanese prison camp. Unlike in the movie, there was no team assembled to go after the surviving son.
One of the biggest things that the movie got wrong was that they were not going to risk the lives of
many to save one. In the movie, the sacrifice was justified by saying that the mother did not need to go
through losing another son, but it was stated by one of the eight that they all had mothers who should
not have to go through that either. Hey, Wade, I got a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Suicide Note by Janice Mirikitani, The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost, and Dreams of Suicide by
William Meredith are the three poems that connect together in several different ways. Not only do the
poems link together, but the authors do as well. This paper will present biographical information about
the authors, symbols throughout the poems, and the literary elements the authors chose to use in the
poems. It will also explain how the symbols and literary elements that are used help emphasize the
themes that the authors have chosen.
Author of the poem Suicide Note, Janice Miriktani was born in 1941 (Bostian). Her writing journey
began in 1965. Janice published her first volume out of four in 1978. Janice, just like many other
writers, had struggles throughout her life. Janice was sexually abused by her family and was forced to
keep it a secret (Bostian). One out of her four volumes of poetry stemmed from the tragic events that
she had faced. It is Shedding Silence: Poetry and Prose, and contains a total of 35 poems, a short play
entitled Shedding Silence, and some short stories (Bostian). Because Mirikitani sought to break the
cycle of violence created by her past that is set by being silent, her tone is angry and aggressive in

Japanese American, she was often mistreated due to the harsh stereotype thrust upon her during the
World War. Deirdre Lashgare says,

The Journalist, Poet And Author G. K.

have influenced many figures in 20th century Christian apologetics, including, most famously, C. S.
Lewis, who discussed Chesterton s influences on his life and work in his autobiography, Surprised by
Joy (Lewis, 1955). His perspectives on English identity, as well as the nature of nationality and social
belonging, disseminated through various essays and articles in London newspapers (including his own
publication, G. K. s Weekly), were both based on a firm belief in the importance of Christian
traditions in society, in addition to vehement opposition against Puritan ideas, arguably in response to
Victorian attitudes. Throughout his work, Chesterton focused on what he saw as the needs and values
of the ordinary man, extolling an optimistic view of everyday life as extraordinary. The need for
symbolism and idealism is, in his opinion, an expression of this view; it is the main focus of his 1904
work, The Napoleon of Notting Hill. In this novel, Chesterton explores the idea of national and
regional identity. Set in a 1984 that is almost identical to Chesterton s own time (except for the
random selection of the King), it explores the aftermath of the establishment of the

  • 2. The Stress Self Assessment Focused On My Stressors Essay The Nature of Stress self assessment focused on my stressors. I learned that most of my stressors were chronic; mainly dealing with school and socializing. The stressors were categorized as mental and spiritual, although I did notice missing family and friends could fall under spiritual and emotional. Another thing I learned was most of my stressors were caused from my move to Bismarck. For example, living far from home, new job, and not having close friendships. This form of assessment didn t work for me because I found I was focusing on the negative and felt more stressed after seeing all my stressors in a list. The Signs of Stress assessment focused on my personal symptoms of stress. I previously noticed these happened, but I never drew the connection to stress. For example, I normally have very clear skin, but every once in awhile I ll break out. The effects of stress are physiological. Now that I have a list of my signs of stress, I am able to recognize when situations like break outs happen what is really going on. The Personality Survey was to determine if I had a hardi personality. Before starting the assessment, I predicted I would be classified with the hardi personality because I handle stress well. The categories I scored highest on were I consider myself an optimist , I approach new situations with the idea that I will learn something valuable , and I am strong willed . The one I resonate with most is the one about new situations because I moved to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Lord Of The Glies And John Locke s Lord Of The Flies Jordan Early Nathan Carpenter PHIL 101.004 4 December 2017 John Locke Lord of the Flies In the book, Second Treatise of Government , John Locke explains to the readers how a government should be run and the freedoms that people should have. He also talks about the natural laws that people should follow. Locke petitions a natural law of morality to govern people before they enter a society. But in order to conserve themselves, people come together to lay a foundation for a government. Once that has begun, the people agree on certain fundamental behaviors to follow. According to Locke, this action breaks down their natural rights as human beings. This follows the movie, Lord of the Flies, as boys are stranded on a remote island out at sea. The boys start out in Locke s state of nature. Due to them being all alone, they work together to survive. While beginning their new life as a uniform tribe, they inevitably come to an unacceptable state of war that gives rise to complete and utter chaos on the island. John Locke describes the state of nature as a state all men are naturally in, and that is, a state of perfect freedom to order their actions, and dispose of their possessions and persons, as they think fit, within the bounds of the law of nature, without asking to leave, or depending upon the will of any other man (§4). The state of nature is a state of equality, where not one person has a sense of power over other people. It is the time before a society ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The blame for Standard Machine Corp can be directed in one of three ways: Industry: One could argue that innovation in the machine tool equipment industry has been stagnant and resulting caused customers to view machines as commodities and compete on price. Another thought is that the industry allowed a low cost player to enter and therefore put the premium priced equipment manufactures in a position of having to rationalize their price. By this we mean that Standard should find ways to justify their price premium. This may be done by offering packages uniquely customized to retain their long term clients. Specifically, for long term customers like Occidental, Standard must justify their $22,000 premium over their competitors within the market. One way to address this issue would be through rebates. Standard could offer customized rebate packages to its premium customers, like Occidental. Although they are, in effect, lowering their prices for Occidental, they are not sending a negative signal to the market. An outright price decrease could create a price war, where their competitors continue to drive down their own prices, further commoditizing Standard s line of products. A rebate would offer an incentive for Occidental to purchase, because the company knows that they will be rewarded on the back end. Another way for Standard to remedy this pricing situation is to offer additional services along with its milling machine in order to further differentiate themselves from their competitors. Standard s package could include an unlimited warrantee for a specified amount of time greater than that of its competitor, and an increase in on site ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Cultural Theories Of Homelands Idera Omotoyosi Salako 7788095 University of Manitoba Olga Shugurova Nov 10th 2017 Assignment 3 PART A Homelands as a cultural group closely linked to a particular group Introduction William and Walton Roberts (2013) defined homelands as places that people have strong feelings about and are recognized with. Schnell (2000) argued that homelands involve the emotional bonding of a self conscious group to a particular area of land, attachments that buttress a person s identity as a member of a group and such attachments are immensely rooted in the visible landscape of the homeland. William and Walton Roberts (2013) explained that homelands involve typical ethnic characters, recognizable self consciously aware groups, cultural regional landscape, emotional connection of the group with the region and a level of institutional control of the region. William and Walton Roberts (2013) further discussed that homelands are mostly ethnically based regions with recognizable cultural landscapes that are best understood as dynamic results of specific human and environment relations. William and Walton Roberts (2013) discussed that cultural regions were initially used as a means of establishing some semblance on a supposedly diverse cultural phenomenon. Furthermore, William and Walton Roberts (2013) defined cultural regions as a section of the world where the inhabitants tend to have in common most of the components of culture such as, related languages, similar ecological ... • 6. True Dimensionality of Space-Time Allan Poe states in his essay on cosmology titled Eureka, that space and duration are one. To many, this is portrayed as the first known instance of suggesting space and time to be joined together as one thing. Albert Einstein s 1905 theory of special relativity is the very beginning of a theory related concept of spacetime, but the first mathematical theory of spacetime actually created by one of his own early teachers named Hermann Minkowski. He created the concept of Minkowski Space which is the earliest recommendation to the treatment of space and time as two separate entities of one unified whole. The idea of Minkowski space has led up to special relativity being viewed more so in a geometrical way rather than a scientific and mathematical way. Minkowski space is described as the mathematical formation for which special relativity can be conveniently formulated. In this setting the three dimensions of space are combined with one dimension of time to create a four dimensional whole expressed together as spacetime. It would be considered extremely important to consider the events that space and time can ultimately affect each other and how space and time are used in cosmological research. However, before touching base with the concept of space time, it seems appropriate to tie together the two basic types of dimensions and how they are ultimately applied to each other. Space time is closely linked with Albert Einstein s theory of special relativity, mathematician ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Not just that, but how it can sometimes take adopting an unbiased, non judgmental, or outside perspective in order to see things for what they really are. The way that the narrator in this story adopts such a position allows for a clearer view of the events of the story. In The Lottery, the narrator speaks to us in a non participant and objective manner. We hear and see events unfold from an outside, fly on the wall , perspective. No critique or judgement on the events is provided by the narrator; we only can ascertain judgements and feelings from what the characters do and say. By allowing us this viewpoint, we can make ... It s an accepted norm that no one wants to upend. This made me think about how our cultures customs have shifted with time, but how many aspects remain unchanged. It could be for nearly anything, such as how holidays are celebrated, or rituals like weddings, or how challenges to old norms are often viewed with intrepidation or skepticism. • 8. The Stamp Act, Boston Massacre And The Boston Tea Party The American Revolution, one of the most significant events in our world s history, has established a huge impact on not only life back in the eighteenth and nineteenth century but our society today. The Acts of Parliament highly benefited the British but did not afford those same rights to the colonists until the formal issuing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4th, 1776, in which colonial freedom was granted. The most controversial issue is which group caused it; a result of propaganda by the colonists. Multiple acts and protests contributed to this war, three influential ones being the Stamp Act, Boston Massacre and the Boston Tea Party. One of the major causes was the Stamp Act in 1765. This was issued by Parliament to tax every piece of printed paper colonists used. Other documents such as newspapers, playing cards and any form of printed publication were also taxed. Money collected by these taxations were used to pay costs of defending the American frontier. Colonists viewed this act of Parliament as means to raise money without legislative approval. ¨Reactions to the Stamp Act included riots and boycotts of British goods. Crowds calling themselves Sons of Liberty prevented stamped papers from being unloaded from British ships.¨ Another organization called the Daughters of Liberty was formed to promote production of homemade cloth, not imported by the British. Nine colonies met in New York City to create a statement in which the Stamp Act would be repealed. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In 1967 in the Lower Omo Valley near Kibish, Ethiopia along the Omo river, a team from the Kenya National Museums, led by Richard Leakey an anthropologist and conservationist, did an initial exploration which led to the discovery of several stone tools, hominin fossils, and various other skull fossils of mammals. In this expedition the team found parts of what would be known as Omo I and Omo II. The finds for Omo I comprised of the mandible, dentition, several parts of the cranium, and a considerable portion of the post cranial skeleton. Omo I s finds has been described as being a modern skeleton of Homo sapiens. Omo II comprised of an almost intact neurocranium, which has been described as primitive remains most closely resembling Homo erectus (Fleagle et al. 2008). At that time in 1967, researches faced a difficult time establishing an accurate age of these remains due in part to the confines of technology. Economic, social, and historical surroundings separate the common man of America into basically the rich and poor. For example, the landowners create a system in which migrants are treated like animals and pushed along from one roadside camp to the next. They are denied decent wages and forced to turn against their fellow scramblers to simply survive. • 14. The Great Lakes Region By Richard White Richard White provides a refreshing perspective on the Great Lakes region during the colonial and early national periods in regards to the developing relationships between the intrusive French, British, Americans and the indigenous Native Americans. The Middle Ground: Indians, Empires and Republics in the Great Lakes Region effectively links Native American history to broader themes in American history. He presents a convincing argument of how the Middle Ground, a place the French called the pays d en haut, allowed for mutual accommodation and an acculturative social solution to develop out of the misunderstandings and the new meanings given to older institutions. White looks to this area to show how Native Americans and Europeans together constructed a complex and dynamic world that became the multiethnic society of early America. White has written a remarkable book that further enriches the historiography of the Great Lakes region and gives us a fuller understanding of this complicated world that underwent profound historic change. White presents an interesting introduction that demonstrates the extremely complex subject and multiple influences that defined the middle ground. Immanuel Kant (1784) approaches the theme of being free in An Answer to the Question: What is Enlightenment? that is about reaching a psychological state, which is to able express and act freely without being guided by the monarchy. However, Mary Wollstonecraft s (1792) A Vindication of the Rights of Woman conveys being free as giving females identical opportunities and treatments that males receive. There are many viewpoints of being free and the measures it takes for these restrictions to be removed for freedom. Immanuel Kant and Mary Wollstonecraft represent a separate matter of individuals being restricted within a boundary. They both stand for a particular group of people that exists within the world. Kant believes that the human population subconsciously feel that they have no reason to express their emotions or think independently, and as a result they develop a fear of being criticised or judged upon in society by those who hold great power. • 22. Summary Of Experiential Learning In the reading Experiential Learning: Experience as the Source of Learning and Development by David Kolb (1984), he proposed that learning is a cycle process in which individuals learn through their own experiences in life. This notion of the learning cycle in which he was influenced by the ideas of three other theorists (Piaget, Dewey, and Lewinian) called it Experiential Learning Theory. Kolb s theory was based on how people learned by imputing information and processing the information. Within this two abilities, there are four steps in which Kolb s believe the learning process occurs. The first one he calls concrete experience , in which one actually does the learning right then and now. The second one is reflective observation when the learner thinks about what they did as a reflection of the experience. The next step is the abstract conceptualization , where the learner makes a generalization of the experience. The last step is active experimentation , where the learner puts to practice his/her understanding and adapts to it. The learner does this by taking all the first three steps of the learning cycle and seeing the results (pg. 30). Learning is a process in which individuals learn through trial and error. This process can then be reused with our prior experience to strengthen the outcome of our first experience. It is shaped as a cycle in the way we process information cognitively. This is how I understood of the reading on Kolb s Experiential Learning Theory. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The jobs that they do offer are located halfway around the world; this does no good for the hard working American. These taxpayer financed benefits usually come with very few strings attached; allowing companies to skim additional profits by performing publicly funded work overseas (Aflcio). I believe that, in this day and age, companies are always trying to take advantage of the government and find loop hole. Laws concerning the distribution of government procurement should be reformed to not encourage the shipping of jobs overseas, but to promote the growth of a business in America with the assistance of government procurements paid for by the taxpayers who live in the country. • 29. Industrial Revolution And The Industrial Age The Industrial Revolution affected all aspects of American life, and it provoked more changes than just those in the factories. How one experienced the Industrial Revolution depended on where one lived. By 1900, more than a third of America s people lived in cities, and city populations were growing twice as fast as the population as a whole. Between 1870 and 1920, the number of Americans living in cities increased fivefold, from 10 million to 54 million. Most of the massive industries of the Industrial Age emerged in the North. Because the work was there, these cities ballooned into metropolises. And as the cities of the North grew, economic disparities between the wealthy and the poor became more pronounced; the corporations of the Industrial Age generated enormous fortunes for a handful of people, leaving most industrial laborers living in poverty. Most of the people living in these growing cities were workers working in the new factories of the Industrial Age. The manufacturers sometimes provided company housing close to the factories so that the entire work force could walk to work. The independent builders sought quick profits and got away with throwing up inferior houses because they had no building codes. Those developers also carved up previously built single family homes into multiple unit dwellings called tenements, which often had thin walls and frequently lacked windows as well. I loved the beach, the feel of the ocean s spray upon my face, the sand beneath my toes, but it wasn t until heroin began to directly affect the lives of people around me that I truly began to understand that something darker lingered along the shoreline. For example, Chris was my friend, we grew up together, we played together as kids, and as we got older, we partied together. For a short while Chris even lived at my house. His sweet personality and loving heart made him hard to resist. No matter how much we loved him, he had a problem and he just couldn t seem to overcome it. • 32. Analysis Of Stephen Crane s A Girl Of The Streets Stephen Crane has come to be considered the forerunner of western naturalism (Perosa 94). His works portray the harshest of realities, from the crime and disease ridden streets brought to life in Maggie, to his take on the atrocities of battle in The Red Badge of Courage. Crane pushed his strong messages of environment being a determining element in life, and his belief that there are no heroes, only different individuals in different situations. Crane himself was part of the 19th century movement for naturalism in art, or the contemporary ideas of science and society, which rejected the idealization of experience and adopted an objective and often uncompromisingly realistic (my italics) approach to art (Oxford Dictionaries). In Maggie: A Girl of the Streets, Stephen Crane embarked upon his first endeavor of writing a naturalistic novel. Rather than choosing to write a fiction about documented events in the slums of New York, Crane crafted the depression of the bowery from his own mind, based on his observations and understanding (Pizer 110). Maggie serves as an epitaph as Crane s first novella in a long list of natural and realistic products. BODILY DAMAGE FROM AN OVERDOSE Death is only one of the possible outcomes of an overdose. Low oxygen levels from respiratory depression can lead to a stroke, brain death, heart attack, and damage to other organs (such as the pancreas, liver and kidneys). These complications are common, under appreciated, and under reported by news media. Medical complications can be catastrophic: A stroke can lead to brain death that ultimately leads to physical death. A stroke, when not fatal, can impair any of the five senses, such as the ability to smell, taste, see, and speak. Even the person s ability to move can be impaired because the brain controls the movement of our muscles. A heart attack is also possible. Like the brain, the heart requires a regular supply of oxygen to function properly. Interrupting the oxygen supply can lead to a heart attack, even in younger individuals with healthy hearts. A heart attack can be deadly or lead to permanent damage to the muscles or the valves of the heart, typically resulting in congestive heart failure and possibly the need for a heart transplant (http://wb.md/1ITcAc2). However, no movie could correctly duplicate the struggle that was faced and the fear that was shared among all of the soldiers. The movie is mostly centered around Private Ryan, a soldier during World War II, whose three brothers have died in combat. Not wanting his mother to lose her last son, eight men are given the mission of finding Ryan so he may be sent back home. The movie shows the difficulties that these eight men face while searching and still trying to win the war. Surprisingly, Saving Private Ryan is loosely based on a true story. They later discovered that one of the other brothers was alive after he escaped from a Japanese prison camp. Unlike in the movie, there was no team assembled to go after the surviving son. One of the biggest things that the movie got wrong was that they were not going to risk the lives of many to save one. Suicide Note by Janice Mirikitani, The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost, and Dreams of Suicide by William Meredith are the three poems that connect together in several different ways. Not only do the poems link together, but the authors do as well. This paper will present biographical information about the authors, symbols throughout the poems, and the literary elements the authors chose to use in the poems. It will also explain how the symbols and literary elements that are used help emphasize the themes that the authors have chosen. Author of the poem Suicide Note, Janice Miriktani was born in 1941 (Bostian). Her writing journey began in 1965. Janice published her first volume out of four in 1978. Janice, just like many other writers, had struggles throughout her life. Janice was sexually abused by her family and was forced to keep it a secret (Bostian). One out of her four volumes of poetry stemmed from the tragic events that she had faced. It is Shedding Silence: Poetry and Prose, and contains a total of 35 poems, a short play entitled Shedding Silence, and some short stories (Bostian). Because Mirikitani sought to break the cycle of violence created by her past that is set by being silent, her tone is angry and aggressive in most poems. • 44. The Journalist, Poet And Author G. K. The journalist, poet and author G. K. Chesterton is perhaps best known for his series of detective short stories, Father Brown, adapted into a TV series in 2013. Nevertheless, he should perhaps be best known as a leading figure in the renaissance of Catholic thought in England his writings are known to have influenced many figures in 20th century Christian apologetics, including, most famously, C. S. Lewis, who discussed Chesterton s influences on his life and work in his autobiography, Surprised by Joy (Lewis, 1955). His perspectives on English identity, as well as the nature of nationality and social belonging, disseminated through various essays and articles in London newspapers (including his own publication, G. K. s Weekly), were both based on a firm belief in the importance of Christian traditions in society, in addition to vehement opposition against Puritan ideas, arguably in response to Victorian attitudes. Throughout his work, Chesterton focused on what he saw as the needs and values of the ordinary man, extolling an optimistic view of everyday life as extraordinary. The need for symbolism and idealism is, in his opinion, an expression of this view; it is the main focus of his 1904 work, The Napoleon of Notting Hill. In this novel, Chesterton explores the idea of national and regional identity.
