8 Thresholds In Big History
In the Big History, there are 8 thresholds; in Genesis 1 there are 7 days. The similarities between
the thresholds and days of creation have similarities literally and metaphorically. The Big Bang,
the emergence of matter forming planets and life; the first day, the creation of heaven and earth.
Just like the Big Bang, the first day created the ability for life to emerge. The stars light up, the
second day, Godcreated light. Although the light God created on the second day is metaphorically
goodness, He created light. Before light, earthwas a void, no form, engulfed by darkness. God brings
light. Then He brings day and night, but without stars and the sun; this is when the creation story
becomes separated from the Big History. God then created oceans and land, and then plants and
trees; God creates these things before the sun and stars.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
What if the day and night is the separation between good and evil. History shows that humans
measure their days and nights based on the sun. If there was no sun, what kind of day and night
was it? Were these beginnings days and nights, God s time and not the human measured time?
God continues, He then creates the sun and the stars; the formation of new elements and a solar
system. God then created fish and birds, animals that live in the sea and animals that fly above
land; the creation story is thus relinked to Big History. God continues to create more organisms
and animals. Then on the sixth day, man and woman were created. In the creation story, there is
not days that show the emergence of agriculture or industrial ideas. God rests on the seventh day.
The seventh day can be seen as the future, but I like to think the seventh day is when collective
learning emerges and that there is will be always be an invisible eighth day. The eighth day would

Unrequited Love In An Abusive Relationship
I watched a Ted talk about a woman named Leslie Morgan Steiner who was in an abusive
relationship. She talked about the questions people ask her like why did she stay or why didn t
she try to get help. She talked about how many victims from an abusive relationship end up being
in denial. They keep thinking that it will never happen again, they also think they are alone.
Leslie talks about her journey and her relationship with her abusive boyfriend and soon husband.
Love is blinding and one of the first signs of a domestic abuser is idolizing their partner and then
isolating them from their friends and family. This could be considered unrequited love in regards to
erotomania which is when someone believes that someone else loves them back (class

European And Non-European Expansion In The 1500s And 1600s
Europeans had many ambitions throughout the 1500s and 1600s. To achieve their goals, they
deferred to the non European culture. The main question remains: how did the Europeans
accommodate themselves to Non European culture? The European traders and missionaries would
accommodate themselves by integrating into the Non European culture, by adapting their physical
appearance, by referring to the traditional practices, and through the response of the native people
wants to European goods.
For Europe s influence to be successful across the world, they had a guide written by Father Jean
de BrГ©beuf, called Instructions for The Fathers of Our Society Who Shall Be Sent to The
Hurons. In this small guide, Father Jean, writes instruction for other European members to follow
in order to be successful in their influence in the new world. The thought of being the superior race,
followed them to the new world, so embracing a culture that they thought was low class, was a big
change to the European men. As to the other numerous things which may be unpleasant, they must
be endured for the love of God, without saying anything or appearing to notice them. They did not
do anything that contradicts the Natives belief, as they were trying to convert them to the idealized
culture. They were doing so in a way that the Natives did not realize they were being converted. So,
the Europeans change their normal customs, to gain their trust. In which they accommodate to non
European ways. The

Hansmann and Kraakman argue that, as a matter of norms, efficiency and fact, the world continues

Critically assess this claim with reference to the influence of UK company law, takeover regulation

This essay will then consider that convergence towards a single model is unlikely due to path
dependence and cultural differences between countries. Nevertheless, pressures should result in
convergence towards a hybrid model in the near future. This essay will conclude that lack of
complete convergence may not be a negative, given the various problems associated with the SM.
The shareholder oriented model
Hansmann and Kraakman implicitly assume that the SM is identical across the US and UK,
ignoring several differences. The historical origins and balance of responsibilities of both systems
are distinct , with the UK taking a principles based approach and the US taking a rules based
method .
Nevertheless, both systems take the broad approach that shareholders ought to have complete
control over the company, with managers managing for shareholders benefit and minority
shareholders being protected . This model is characterised by the power of the General Meeting ,
inclusion of non executive directors on the Board , move towards greater financial transparency and
independent audit committees .
Drivers towards convergence
Hansmann and Kraakman s arguments were based on three claims: the ideological claim, efficiency
claim and the factual claim . Yet, these failed to consider changing global circumstances and other
nuances.
Efficiency claim

Executive Order History
As the Founders of the United States and the Framers of the Constitution started designing the
government of the new United States, they made sure to balance the powers of the three branches
of government in order to create a fair and equal government. However, these intelligent men knew
very well that they could not actually create a perfect government, and as a result, some branches
of government possess certain powers that allow them to overpower the other branches. One of
these powers is an executive order, which the President can use in some situations. The most
interesting parts of the concept of an executive order include what it is, its history, and the
restrictions of executive orders. Executive orders are orders written by the... Show more content on

The first use of an executive order came on April 22, 1793, when President George Washington
used an executive order to instruct federal officers to prosecute U.S. citizens who became
involved in the war between France and England. During the early to mid 19th century,
Presidents used executive orders; however, these executive orders were often not very
controversial. Controversy surrounding executive orders starting to sweep the nation again in
1861 when President Lincoln issued an executive order in the months preceding the Civil War.
During the early months of 1861, a Southerner named John Merryman led a group of Southern
rebels through Maryland and Virginia fighting federal troops. Eventually, when federal officials
captured John Merryman, his attorneys argued that he had a right to see a judge before
spending more time in prison. In response, President Lincoln issued an executive order
suspending habeas corpus, which is a suspect s right to see a judge after they taken to prison. In
the years following the Civil War and the early 20th century, the use of executive orders
continued to rise. Due to President Theodore Roosevelt s belief in expanding the powers of the
executive branch, he quickly became the first President to issue more than 1,000 executive orders
during his presidency. However, Franklin D. Roosevelt s support for New Deal legislation and
laws led to him issuing 3,522 executive orders during his time in office (the most of any President
of the United States). Furthermore, as history progressed, Presidents continued to utilize executive
orders. Not including President Trump s executive orders, the only executive orders to be struck
down were orders issued by President Truman and President Clinton. President Truman s executive
order allowed the national government to seize control of all steel mills in order to prevent a
worker strike.

Introduction
Accountancy analyses information for a variety of purposes within the business, while finance is to

Accounting is the recording of financial transactions plus storing, sorting, retrieving, summarizing,

Financial accounting
According to Obaidullah Jan, Financial accounting is a system that accumulates, processes and
reports information about an entity s performance (i.e. profit or loss), its financial position (i.e.
assets, liabilities and shareholders equity) and changes in financial position. Every entity, whether
for profit or not for profit, aims at creating maximum value for its stakeholders. The goal of
maximum value addition is best achieved when there is a mechanism to monitor the management
and the board of directors. Financial accounting helps in such monitoring by providing relevant,
reliable and timely information to the stakeholders, (Jan, Financial accounting, 2013).
Financial accounting is the recorded information for external users who are people outside of the
organisation like investors and tax authorities which includes a report at the end of the year on

John Berger and History
In his first essay of Ways of Seeing, John Berger claims that all power, authority, and meaning
that was once held by an original work of art has been lost through the mass reproduction of
these works that has occurred in recent years. He writes of an entirely bogus religiosity (116
117) that surrounds these art objects and that the meaning of the original work no longer lies in
what it uniquely says but in what it uniquely is (117). He claims that because of reproduction, the
art of the past no longer exists as it once did (127). Obviously, something created hundreds of
years ago is not the same as it once was, but the distribution of art and music to the general public

how our perception is influenced). In using that word, he is referring to the social exploitation of
the past: how the rich were painted, patronizing poor artists (i.e. Hals), and in this fashion
demonstrating the monopoly the wealth and upper class had on the arts. To support his argument,
he writes that reproduction is used all the time to promote the illusion that nothing has changed
except that the masses, thanks to reproduction, can now begin to appreciate art as the cultured
minority once did. Understandably, the masses remain uninterested and skeptical (127). He claims
that the masses don t appreciate the art because it is not a part of their history. It seems that
because of this, however, the art has not really lost any integrity anyway. The only change is that
now, anyone who wishes to access it is able to, but it still holds an esoteric quality that the cultural
elite can enjoy. Berger shows that the majority of the population does not attend museums. Does
not this give them power that the rich can still enjoy, while making it possible for the masses to
experience as well if they want to? Reproduction has opened the lines of education of culture as
well. Before reproduction, the rich were the only ones who owned art, attended the opera, and the
like, but it is probable that these people only attended these functions to show off their wealth,
without really knowing or caring about the

Nikola Tesla The Forgotten Father Of The Modern Age
Nikola Tesla: The Forgotten Father of the Modern Age The inventors of this world are artists.
Maybe not in the traditional way of those such as Van Gogh or Beethoven, but they are masters of
creativity nonetheless. Each has had a hand in painting modern society, brushing on improvements,
recreating civilization with newer and better technology, making it more and more superior with
each passing year. One such father of society is Nikola Tesla. Throughout his lifetime, he added
many strokes to the painting of technology. Though his contributions were great, he received very
little recognition for his work, making him the greatest tragic hero of the twentieth century.
Born in 1856 Croatia, Tesla immigrated to America in 1884. Charles Bachelor, a good friend of
his, referred him to Thomas Edison for work. In his letter he said I know two great men, Edison.
One is you and the other is this young man. From then on, Tesla worked in Edison s labs,
improving designs as they were prepared for patent. One day though, there came a breaking point in
their professional relationship: Edison offered Tesla $50,000 dollars (modern equivalent of
$1,000,000) if he could make improvements to Edison s direct current patents. Within the time of a
few months, Tesla presented a new design with vast improvements. When asked for the money,
Edison is said to have replied: Tesla, you don t understand our American humor . With that, the
young inventor quit.

Arthur Miller s Good Night, And Good Luck
A term coined in the 1950s, McCarthyism is the general act of making accusations of treason or
subversion without proper regard for evidence. Both Arthur Miller s The Crucible and George
Clooney s Good Night, and Good Luck explore the theme of McCarthyism through numerous ways
using conventions of their text types: respectively a play and a film. Each through characterisation
and symbolism, as well as individually through the plays title and narrative style, and the films
editing, camera techniques and sound track, the texts delve into the subject constructively through
their own unique methods.

between his fixed positioned fingers. His voice is a perfect imitation of the real Murrow s
hardened scowl with dry drone like delivery, expelling gravitas, courage and confidence as he
devotes himself to report the truth in the face of McCarthy s corruption. This nostalgic view of
Murrow steals the attention of viewers from his era, especially when reciting his famous
monologues on air revealing McCarthy for what he is doing. McCarthy however, is only displayed
through existing historic footage of him. This is accompanied by his gravelly and rather grating,
monotonous voice, of which becomes repetitive and intrusive as the news team periodically look
through footage of his speeches to use against him. This contrast of characterisation between
Murrow and McCarthy clearly shows that they are respectively good and evil counterparts of one

Lewis wanted to show the reader, a man who s life is based on the ideals and standards of others.
quot;Villages overgrown towns three quarters of a million people still dressing, eating, building
houses, attending church, to make an impression on their neighbors. quot; (Lewis). This is what
Lewis thought of American society and he used Babbitt to voice his opinions to his readers. In fact
that passage was intended to be included in the original introduction of Babbitt, which was never

Babbitt does well in conformist society because in the beginning of the novel he accepts all the
standards, goals, ideals, likes, and dislikes of society. Babbitt s though mirrors all those around
him and he is therefore accepted in society. At first Babbitt lives in the illusion of happiness. The
happiness Babbitt experiences is not genuine because he has replaced his desires with those of
society. Since Babbitt is controlled by society his goals are also controlled by it. The goals set by
society are economic and material worth, social standing, and conservative thought.
Since Babbitt has achieved, at least in part, these goals he is in a sense fooled into believing he is
truly happy. Babbitt s true desires however are not those of society he dreams of nature instead of

First Aid for Adults
For my listening piece I decided to do a talk on first aid for adults. I identified the main
characteristics of scripted speech and tried to emulate them in my piece. The key characteristics of
instructional speech are that it uses very short, concise sentences to give directions. Long complex
sentences can lead to ambiguity and confusion. Instructional speech uses simple, easy to understand
vocabulary as complicated wording, jargon and terminology make instructions difficult to
understand and may confuse the listener. The points must also be presented in a logical order to
make them easy to follow.

In my third and fourth drafts, I put the information into even smaller blocks to emphasise the
succinct style of writing because I felt that it was still too difficult to follow; so I used more bullet
points and used capitals, underlining and italics to emphasise key words and phrases. Also in the
graphology of the piece I have used dashes in order to more effectively show where the reader
would give a slight pause. An example is in a hundred compressions a minute just under two a
second .
In the third paragraph in particular, the sentences were too complex so having originally written
them as one complex sentence in the pluperfect tense, I broke them down in to one point per
sentence and put them in the present tense so that it would be easier to understand. I also changed
some of the verbs that were in the present tense into the imperative form because it made the
phonology sharper and clearer for the audience to hear. One example is in the sentence After you
have returned to the casualty and rechecked their breathing and they are not breathing or if the
likely cause of unconsciousness is trauma or drowning and they are not breathing, you now give
two rescue breaths . The sentence was much too long and confusing so I changed it to When you

Essay Managing Employee Retention and Turnover
Managing Employee Retention and Turnover
Employee retention has always been an important focus for human resource managers. Once a
company has invested time and money to recruit and train a good employee, it is in their own best
interest to retain that employee, to further develop and motivate him so that he continues to provide
value to the organization. But, employers must also recognize and tend to what is in the best
interest of their employees, if they intend to keep them. When a company overlooks the needs of its
employees and focuses only on the needs of the organization, turnover often results. Excessive

A recent survey by The Society for Human Resource Management ranked tuition reimbursement
programs and vacation/holiday time as the top two retention initiatives being offered by
employers. In addition, instant recognition programs, such as spot bonuses, are being used to
reward excellence in performance as it occurs. Such programs give employees immediate
gratification for their efforts rather than delaying it until annual reviews. Also, flexible work hours
and telecommuting programs that allow employees to better balance their work commitments
with their family duties are becoming more common. According to Ceridian Employer Services
(2004), 90 percent of companies with more than 5,000 employees allow telecommuting.... And ...
52 percent of large companies use virtual teams. Organizations must continually search for
innovative ways to retain their best employees. Fortunately, the costs of these efforts are low in
comparison to the high costs of turnover. Turnover of employees can be involuntary or voluntary.
When a company lets go of an employee who has been a bad performer, has violated company
policy, or broken a law it is usually considered involuntary turnover. So are layoffs. More often we
speak of turnover in the context of being voluntary, or the unplanned loss of employees who leave
on their own accord, but that the

Summary Of The Banking Concept Of Education
Dominants and Subordinates in Education
In The Banking Concept of Education, from the Pedagogy of the Oppressed, Revised Edition,
Paulo Freire discusses two different types of education: banking and problem posing. The banking
concept of education is when teachers make deposits which the students patiently receive,
memorize, and repeat (318), and problem posing is when the teachers and students are equal.
Instead of being treated as human beings that have their own thoughts and ideas, students are

Negan In The Walking Dead Season 6
Although the eleventh episode of The Walking Dead Season 6 put the spotlight on the Hilltop
Colony, it was evident that the fear of Negan was in the air. Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and his
group finally got a taste of what Jeffrey Dean Morgan s villain is capable of when a member of
Hilltop was sent back to assassinate Gregory (Xander Berkeley) and it certainly feels like Negan
will be making his appearance pretty soon. But will we finally see the merciless comic villain on
the AMC series? According to TheWrap, The Walking Dead showrunner Scott Gimple recently
hinted that previous reports were mistaken by saying that Morgan will make his debut as Negan in
the season finale. There have been articles pinpointing exactly when Negan shows up, and

Kids Should Not Have Recess Essay
Did you Know, every year the U.S emergency departments treat more than 200,000 children ages
14 and younger for recess and playground injuries that happen in school. Recess has always been
a dangerous place and a waste of time for school hours. Ever since it began back in 1834 in New
England. When Amos Bronson Alcott was the one who thought he came up with a great idea. The
idea to have recess in the first place, but when he started recess did he think about kids safety, and
that they would probably either shorten kids classes which means a smaller education.I strongly
believe kids should not have recess. If kids need exercise they can do it in P.E and get some of
their energy out. P.E is a great way to get that energy out and exercise. Recess can also be a very
dangerous place, kids can get fractures, internal injuries, concussions, and dislocations. Recess is
dangerous and kids don t need it.
Personally I believe kids should not have recess in school because recess can be a waste of time
for school hours. Kids get enough exercise in PE so they can get enough energy out, but also
enough to still do class. In 2007 the center of Education Policy at George Washington University
found that 62% of school districts have increased the amount of time spent on English language arts
or math in elementary ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

There are thousands of problems troubling our society today, one being the increase in school
shootings. In this case Sandy Hook Elementary School where 22 year old Adam Lanza shot and

science to determine why Adam Lanza did this. The scientist found one factor that stood above
all the rest. Adam s increase in violent video games he played, such as Call of Duty, Battlefield,
and Grand Theft Auto. Each of these games give a 1st person view of killing civilians and the
realism of death. It is scientifically proven that kids that play video games have an increase in

Role of Conflict Essay
Chelsea Williams
Role of Conflict
The two stories I chose were The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin and The Carnival Dog, the
Buyer of Diamonds by Ethan Canin. Both conflicts have similar ideas, which can be compared and
contrasted as I have below. These elements include theme, setting and characters.
The first element to discus is theme. In The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin the theme is the self
independence of women. In the beginning of the story, the main character, Louise Mallard mourns
over the death of her husband, Mallard. As the story progresses, Louise Mallard grows as she
sees the new found freedom she has been given at the loss of her husband. ... she would live for
herself. There would be no powerful will bending ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

to the mountains in July. When given the chance, he ends up giving up and letting his father win.
He believes that something this small isn t worth the fight in the end. Though, later on Myron is
faced with a much larger decision. He is unhappy in medical school and wants to quit so that he
can find contentment in doing what he wants, even though he knows his father won t agree. This
was his biggest decision to escape his father but he fails. Abe dominates Myron, once again as he
always has. Myron ends up backing down and ultimately letting his father win as he always has.
Do you give?
What?
Do you give?
You mean, will I go back to school?
That s what I mean.
Look, Myron said, you re crazy.
Give me your answer.
............ I give.
In the end, Myron continues to live under his father.
The second element to discuss is the setting. The Setting in The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin
seems to have great influence towards the conflict of the story. The story seems to be set in the time
that the author, Kate Chopin lived in, around the nineteenth century. This was a time when a woman
s independence was looked down on. At this time they believed a man was needed in a woman s

using the phrase more spiritual than religious these days, causing us to ponder what they really
mean when they label themselves this way. It has been our experience that there really is a soul
deepening difference between spiritual and religious a difference we have termed spiritual
emergence versus religious emergency. Spiritual emergence is a gradual unfoldment of spiritual
expression that causes a minimal disturbance in our everyday functioning because we are
somewhat prepared for it, given our disposition for the mystical. On the other hand, there are those
who experience what we call religious emergencies, which can cause significant disruptions in their
everyday living, because these folks are usually unprepared for mystical experiences since they
consider themselves to be more religious than spiritual. Emergent spiritual experiences like visions,
deeply felt meditations, out of body experiences, apparitions and precognitive dreams are usually
exhilarating and life changing and can be very

Orwell, illustrates the tragedy and corruption that consumed Russia through the Soviet Union s rise

Is Iago An Orator In Othello
Who is Iago? How does one arrive at such evil intentions? How does one succeed in playing out
these intentions? Iago is a true orator. Or is he? Quintilian has a few ideas about what constitutes
an orator and what bars a person from that title. Quintilian might have a hard time labelling Iago
based on his outlines for an orator in his Institutes of Oratory . Shakespeare clearly wrote Iago
with the intention of embodying vice, anger, and revenge in Othello . However, Iago s eloquence
and rhetorical prowess may be at odds with Quintilian s manual. Iago proves himself an orator
through his ability to speak on any occasion, with success, and bases his rhetoric on imagination
and subtlety. On the other hand, his rhetoric s intention, and... Show more content on

awful thoughts. Then he tells Othello You cannot, if my heart were in your hand;/ Nor shall

curious and then concerned that the information Iago is withholding is crucial to know. Once
Othello essentially begs Iago, he asserts that now I shall have reason/ To show the love and duty
that I bear you (III, iii). This ruse baits Othello into thinking that he needs the knowledge that
Iago has, and that it is more important and valid than it really is while setting Othello into a state
of mind to truly consider and believe the implications that Iago is making. This line also plays
upon Othello s assumption and belief that Iago wants not only what is best for him, but that Iago
would sacrifice himself for him. Therefore, Iago uses rhetoric to make imaginary faults plausible.
Next, Iago is a character who adapts to each event, occasion, and position that he find himself in.
He is able to speak to the advantage of his master plan regardless of the situation that presents
itself. Iago proves himself a chameleon of rhetoric. He is able to fit his plan into all points of his
rhetoric without a fault, just as Quintilian stated that an orator

Punishment that Befits the Sin
Dante s Inferno originally named The Divine Comedy or in modern Italian The Commedia ,
follows the contemporary Christian ethos by showing how the consequences of man are equal to
their sins; passed upon them in death. The physical sins that man does on earth if not repented of,
will then become their eternal consequence in Hell. Dante shows us in his travels through the
circles of hell how this suffering is the direct and equal result of their earthly sins. The sins of the
cowardice, the lustful, gluttonous, greedy, angry, heretical, violent, fraudulent and treacherous have
their bodies in constant pain equivalent of the actions of their human bodies on earth. The thesis of
this paper is to show how physical pain enacted upon corporeal bodies in hell, are the logical
consequence of sin on earth. I will show this by citing examples of sinners featured in The inferno
that are tortured for the sins in their respective layer of hell. The Inferno is based directly upon
Dante s devout catholic nature. The inferno is mixed with the bible, roman Catholicism, mythology
and medieval tradition with a direct influence of 14th century roman Catholicism. The passage
concerning purgatory is a direct indoctrination from roman Catholicism and is not found anywhere
in the bible. The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches:

Starbucks: Delivering Customer Service
In late 2002, Christine Day, Starbucks senior vice president of administration in North America, sat

A few years later, Schultz got his chance when Starbucks founders agreed to sell him the company.
As soon as Schultz took over, he immediately began opening new stores. The stores sold whole

Result Analysis Of Aspirin
Introduction
Aspirin is a widely name used to refer to a chemical compound known as acetylsalicylic acid. It
is commonly used as a pain killer. Salicylic acid is extracted from the bark of willow plant. In the
past, the bark willow plant was used as the remedies for tonics and headache. Currently, salicylic
acid is administered to patients in aspirin form which is less irritating to the stomach as compared to
salicylic acid. Aspirin is synthesised by reacting excess acetic anhydride with the salicylic acid.
During its synthesis a small quantity of a strong acid is used as a catalyst. Strong phosphoric acid
was used as a catalyst in this experiment. The excess acetic acid was quenched by addition of water.

Theories Of Finding Nemo
Personality Theories Essay over the movie Finding Nemo
The purpose of this essay is to watch the movie and try to view the main character from three
personality theorists perspectives. In the movie Finding Nemo, Marlin was a clown fish who lost
his son, Nemo, in the vast ocean. Along his journey to find his son, he ran into Dory, a blue tang fish
who suffered from short term memory loss. Dory provided moral support and comfort in this
search that Marlin has been missing for years. This essay will analyze Dory in the movie Finding
Nemo through Carl Rogers self actualization theory, Maslow s Hierarchy of needs, and Friedman
and Rosenman s personality behavior type.

Maslow s Hierarchy of Needs
Maslow s hierarchy of needs is a systematic arrangement of needs according to priority in which
basic needs must be met before less basic needs are aroused. At the point in the movie where
Dory meets Marlin, Dory was stuck on the second level of Maslow s pyramid because she lacked
in needs of love and belongingness that is necessary to climb up higher on the hierarchy of needs.
When she is introduced in the movie, she had no love, no family, no self esteem, and was only
concerned about the basic needs in life like safety and security. At the point in the movie where
Marin pulls her out of the jellyfish, Dory progressed to the third level of the pyramid because in
her dedicated pursue to aid and assist Marlin, they had developed a relationship. Marlin then
accepted Dory and she felt a sense of affiliation and acceptance. Dory was then able to progress
through the rest of Maslow s hierarchy of needs.
Friedman and Rosenman Behavior Type pattern
In Finding Nemo, Dory had a type B personality because she was normally very easy going and
relaxed. A type B personality is defined as a child ego state characterized by a form of behavior
associated by Friedman and Rosenman with people who appear free of hostility and aggression
and who lack a compulsion to meet deadlines, are not highly competitive at work and play, and
have a lower risk of heart attack (Farlex, 2012). In many parts of the movie, you could see

Social And Economic Effects Of The Industrial Revolution
The Industrial revolution was a period between the eighteenth and ninteenth centuries, and the Old
agrarian economy became more industrialized and urban. Before this period of time, manufacturing
was often performed in homes and was handmade. These techniques developed over time turning
into factories, textile industry, and new technologies. The new industrialization effected the people
in terms of mass productionand new technologies.
Mass production is a system of manufacturing in which machines rapidly product large amounts
of a product. This began in the textile industry and decreased the need for skilled workers, and
unskilled workers became increasingly important. When these machines were developed, wages
declined and costs of making goods declined as well, resulting in economic growth. There were
many unskilled workers who can operate these machines and so they were competing with each

The United States And The European Union
Europe was constantly in civil conflict with each other prior to the aftermath of World War II.
However, at the end of World War II, it became evident that the United States would dominate
global politics. In fact, much of the foreign policy implemented throughout the world were simply
just the goals of the United Statesand the United States did become the major geopolitical hegemon
directing international policies which other countries would follow. In simpler terms, the United
States frequently exercised power throughout the 20th century. However, with the emergence of the
European Unionand it s recent economic rise rivaling that of the United States, some scholars begin
to question whether the United States will be able to maintain its role in the international arena and
what the role of the European Union will be. Thus, the question must be asked, Will the European
Union run the 21st century? Viewing this through an economic lens, the European Union will run
the 21st century because of other regions adopting its economic model, the sheer size of the EU
economy, and its overall economic influence and power. First, it is important to examine the
readings regarding the European Union s foreign policy. Here are some general explanations on the
arguments from the following readings about the EU and its role in the 21st century. Kagan argues
that the European Union will not run the 21st century. His reasoning is that although the EU is an
economic power, it lacks

In the novel A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens and in the novel Weathering Heights by

A Christmas Carol, the main character Ebenezer Scrooge slowly transformed as he visited the

Weathering Heights by Emily Bronte, a child named Heathcliff is at first is an underprivileged,
homeless boy, then he becomes a loved and abandoned, then he is a dishonored lover, and lastly,
he changes into a malicious, isolated owner. When he is first introduced it states that We

big enough both to walk and talk: indeed, its face looked older than Catherine s; yet when it was
set on its feet, it only stared round, and repeated over and over again some gibberish that nobody
could understand. .(EC __) This quote truly showcases just how poor Heathcliff was when he
was brought by Mr. Earnshaw to Weathering Heights. After he is brought to Weathering Heights,
Hindley, Mr. Earnshaw s son starts to be very mean to Heathcliff since his father showcases how
much he loves Healthcliff. After a period of time, he undergoes a loss of loss of community

In both stories the setting takes place in a distant dystopian future. Also both stories show the

it shows a future ruled by chaos, I showed this by drawing a clean city and a destroyed city.
Another similar theme between the stories is perfection, in both the movie and the book. Society

Stalin and His Creation of a Gulag
One of the most brutal mistakes made by Stalin was the creation of a GULAG. It is difficult to
give a precise characterization of its purpose. The aim of this work is to answer the question, Can
we generalize why certain people were able to survive the Gulag more than others? To survive the
Gulag, many prisoners had to fight with others for food, shelter, and simple medical care. Certain
prisoners went into religious and intellectual meditations to preserve at least the appearance of
intelligence. The survival required willpower, strength of mind, skills, mercilessness, and a lot of
luck.
Every former Gulag prisoner explained his/her survival as a result of many insignificant
strategies. A variety of memoirists claimed that the only reason why they have survived was due
to their spiritual life. To distract themselves for the physical sufferings, many prisoners created
mental exercises: religious rituals, music, art, cards, chess, and literature. Prisoners used to write
and read poetry to each other, told stories, discussed philosophy and history. Under such harsh
conditions, the prisoners were required to have an extraordinary imagination. To play cards or
paint, they had to use anything that was easy to hide from the regular raids in the barracks. The
tree core was used as a canvas and any blood was used as paint.
The Soviet Union created a system that forced prisoners to constantly fight with each other. Being
imprisoned led up to despair. Many were driven to commit

trust and is always there for them. This person is someone that they admire and hope to be like
someday. The person that I ve described best fits my Nanny. She knows all the right things and is
there whenever I need her. My Nanny is one of the most important people in my life and I m so
esthetic that I have her. It took me ten years when I was finally old enough to realize what an
extraordinary influence my nanny has been in my life. My Nanny has made very careful and
thoughtful decisions and choices for the way my life turned out. Growing up she was such a
huge role model on my life and shaped it. Since birth, she has been the only consistent person
that I have had in my life. Once my parents were making bad choices and decisions, the
Department of Family and Children services got called due to me missing tons of school, falling
behind, and never knowing what I would be waking up to. My nanny was the one who saved me
from being placed in foster care.
My Nanny was there to take and fill both parents absence in my life. My Nanny was there for my
all of my firsts that occurred as an infant. Most of these instances all came to be because of her. I
was never hungry since she always kept me full and when it came time to walk and talk she was
there. When it came to most days, a lot of our free time was spent either outside planting or

Iago, the Outsider of Shakespeare’s Othello
In any story with a recurring dark theme there always must be an outsider from humanity who
somehow stands out from the seemingly equal community. In the case of Shakespeare s Othello the
outsider from humanity would be Iago for he truly stands out from the rest of society. Although
Othello may be physically put out of the community, it seems that on an emotional and egotistical
level Iagoputs himself out of society further then Othellos blackness does. He is not merely
manipulative, as other villains are; he turns aspects of truth and good qualities, which he does not
possess, and uses them as weakness for his own scheme. He deceives people to follow his plans by
telling them the truth and what seems to be good advice. By standing on... Show more content on

Iago has no conscience and therefore unlike Othello or any other tragic hero asks for no
redemption. One of Iago s astucious qualities is his ability to take the good quality of others and
use them against them. He takes it even further, however, as he has no realization of the evil he
has done. Iago suspects Othello may have slept with his wife. He is not positive, but says that
surety is not necessary.
Iago
But for my sport and profit. I hate the Moor,
And it is thought abroad that twixt my sheets
H as done my office. I know not if t be true,
But I, for mere suspicion in that kind,
Will do, as if for surety. (I, iii, 379 381)
This shows how Iago isn t really concerned about Emilia being unfaithful with Othello or anyone for
that matter. He just wants to ruin Othello beyond reason.
Iago takes what most of us see as good and uses those traits against characters in the play. He is
able to take something as pure as Othello and Desdemona s love or Cassio s loyalty as a
weakness that he can pounce on. He holds me well; The better shall my purpose work on him. (I,
iii, 381 382) Iago possesses no good qualities so as a jealous pay back he takes trust and turns it
against the trusting and then tries to take it even further for himself.
Iago
Cassio s a proper man. Let me see now;
To get his place, and to plume up my will
In double knavery. How? How? Let s

No Tolerance For A Lack Of Maternity Leave
Zero Tolerance For A Lack Of Maternity Leave Whenever we hear a story on the news of a
woman or her family struggling because they re being refused maternity leave it breaks our
hearts. These women, expecting mothers, have to carry or have carried a child for roughly 9
months. Most if not all have done so by being on their feet all day and have only had the required
minimum for breaks. Is it then wrong to ask for maternity leave? Should pregnant women not be
allowed some work accommodations? Well, contrary to popular belief, maternity leave is more
than just a time for a woman s gestation period or relaxation. In a country with a population of
more than 308 million women I think maternity should be a right. So, then who is to blame for
the lack of maternity leave? The answer: male bosses. It s thanks to these bosses that once
women are mothers, they have to go back to work as soon as possible. All these new mothers are
told by their male bosses that they are expected back as soon as they can. These men allow little
to no maternity leave for women in the work force. And I think we can all agree that this is a
serious issue for our nation. There must be a solution to this detrimental illness afflicting our
country. Which is why I have proposed a solution that will benefit not only women but our whole
nation. If male bosses are forced to wear maternity belts they will feel sympathetic to the struggles
of pregnant women. They in turn will be motivated to give paid maternity

Leavell And Clark Model
Leavell and Clark model wanted to explain how the relationship between an agent, host, and
environment could affect an individual s health. Agent Host Environment model, according to
Leavell and Clark, is beneficial for investigative causes of disease in an individual. The model
attempts to explain how the interconnection of three separate elements correlates to affect an
individual health status. The agent host environmental model suggests, how certain factors must
be present or absent for an illness to occur; and as a result of such external factor a living organism
is capable of being adversely infected or affected by outside influences (Leavell and Clark, 1965).

Based on the latest Census review, more than half of Americans with dementia due to AD are at the
moderate or severe stages of the disease. The accumulating care burdens associated with the
progression of AD place considerable stress on caregivers and families of the person with AD, and
often determine whether that person is placed in a nursing home. Furthermore, greater impairments
in cognition, ADL, and behavior are associated with higher societal costs of AD related care.
Successful symptomatic therapies, particularly in the moderate and severe stages of the disease,
may provide substantial health and quality of life benefits, not only for the patient, but also for
those in their caregiving network via reduced AD related burden and stress. Moreover, effective
treatment of symptoms may also delay nursing home placement and help reduce costs related to
patient care (Cummings et al.,

Ticking Tension and Silent Screams: Examining Sound in We Need To Talk About Kevin In
director Lynne Ramsay s We Need To Talk About Kevin (2011), dialogue serves as just one of
many modes of sound used to guide the narrative. Through a series of flashbacks and flash
forwards, orchestrated by diegetic and non diegetic sounds, the film follows Eva Khatchadourian
(Tilda Swinton), mother of baby Kevin (Ricky Duer) and, later, teenage Kevin (Ezra Miller), as
she recalls the influential events leading up to and the aftermath of Kevin murdering his peers and
family with his bow and arrow. While this gruesome film actually displays little violence on the
screen, the properties of sound create the horror and trepidation experienced by the audience.
Perceptual properties of sound, including loudness and timbre, internal diegetic sounds, Eva s
thoughts and sonic flashbacks, and the use of silence when viewing interactions between Eva and
Kevin, shape the audience s understanding of the film. The film employs on screen and off screen
diegetic sounds such as screaming, crying, and ticking and highlights objects/sounds which act as
motifs. Additionally, non diegetic sound created through the soundtrack lends a sense of irony to
different scenarios. While visuals and audio work together to create the film, sounds in particular
shape the spectator s perspective while allowing opportunities for further interpretation. In the

Essay On Mad Cow Disease
1.1 Prions
Prions are an incongruous pathogen that is causative of transmissible spongiform encephalopathies
(TSE); a group of fatal neurodegenerative diseases found in mammals. This abnormal
proteinaceous particle is believed to be a post translational mutation of a normal cellular protein
found in the brain (Emmanuel, 2002). This naturally occurring pathogen acts similarly to a viral
infection, however as it lacks nucleic acid it is invulnerable to death via means of antibiotics or
sterilisation. PrPc and PrPsc, the known prion proteins indicative of TSE s, are known to bind to the
surface of neurons and fold these proteins into an abstract spongiform structure. Although the
process inducing this folding mechanism is unknown, it is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

As no detection program existed, these waste products were often scrapie infested. It is believed
that the rendering process that existed at the time allowed the prion agent to survive, mutate and
overcome the species barrier to infect cattle (NCBA, 2017).
1.4 Symptoms and Detection
Clinical signs generally appear in cattle that are more than 30 months old. Incubation tends to last
4 to 6 years before finally killing the host. This extended lifespan is due to the spine and brain
being targeted late in the incubation period (NCBA, 2017). Currently no TSE detection test exists
for live animals; official diagnosis can only be made through an examination of brain tissue. Studies
have detected BSE most commonly in the brain, optic nerve and spinal cord. As such, diagnosis
must be made through observation of behavior.
Common symptoms include; deranged temperament, unusual posture, lack of coordination, muscle
tremors, decreased milk production and decreased body mass despite maintained appetite (National
Cattlemen s Beef Association, 2017). These iconic drunken mannerisms coined the term Mad Cow
Disease . It is noteworthy that not all affected cattle display symptoms. These carriers amplified
outbreaks as they were similarly rendered into ruminant protein rations.
1.5 Transmission
BSE is generally transmitted through the digestion of a contaminated vector (meat). Fortunately, as
the majority of abnormal

Cultural Background Assignment
1.What is your cultural background?
I was raised in a home that was Baptist, but we did not attend church every week. I did attend
church by myself from the third grade through the ninth grade. We lived in an upper middle class
neighborhood that was almost 100% white. My aunts and uncles, as well as my grandparents, lived
close by so we visited frequently.
2.Do you identify with a particular ethnic group?
I identify myself as white, non Hispanic. 3.Select an ethnic group you come the closest to
identifying with, and describe the group s customary behaviors regarding each of the following:
a.Role the father, mother, children, and other extended familymembers.

When I was 12 my grandfather died of cancer. I knew he was sick and was dying but we never
discussed it. I was able to see my grandfather before he died and was able to attend his funeral.
Two years later my grandmother died suddenly and we were able to attend his funeral. I vaguely
remember attending a couple other funerals but I was really too young to understand what exactly
was going on.
4.How do you feel about your ethnic identity? What are the strengths and weaknesses you perceive
in your ethnic group?
I am very lucky in that I grew up in a household that ethnicity was never discussed. I always
believed (as my parents did) that everyone was equal. I think this was definitely a strength in that I
never looked down on anyone. I can say the only weakness that my ethnic group would have is
those that do look down upon other ethnic groups. I did not witness this from anyone (that I
remember) until I was an adult.
5.What ethnic groups lived in your home environment when you were growing up? How did your
family relate to families of other ethnic groups (consider attitudes, experiences, power relationship;
i.e., was one dependent on, or subordinate to,

  • 2. 8 Thresholds In Big History In the Big History, there are 8 thresholds; in Genesis 1 there are 7 days. The similarities between the thresholds and days of creation have similarities literally and metaphorically. The Big Bang, the emergence of matter forming planets and life; the first day, the creation of heaven and earth. Just like the Big Bang, the first day created the ability for life to emerge. The stars light up, the second day, Godcreated light. Although the light God created on the second day is metaphorically goodness, He created light. Before light, earthwas a void, no form, engulfed by darkness. God brings light. Then He brings day and night, but without stars and the sun; this is when the creation story becomes separated from the Big History. God then created oceans and land, and then plants and trees; God creates these things before the sun and stars.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... What if the day and night is the separation between good and evil. History shows that humans measure their days and nights based on the sun. If there was no sun, what kind of day and night was it? Were these beginnings days and nights, God s time and not the human measured time? God continues, He then creates the sun and the stars; the formation of new elements and a solar system. God then created fish and birds, animals that live in the sea and animals that fly above land; the creation story is thus relinked to Big History. God continues to create more organisms and animals. Then on the sixth day, man and woman were created. In the creation story, there is not days that show the emergence of agriculture or industrial ideas. God rests on the seventh day. The seventh day can be seen as the future, but I like to think the seventh day is when collective learning emerges and that there is will be always be an invisible eighth day. The eighth day would represent the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

She talked about the questions people ask her like why did she stay or why didn t she try to get help. She talked about how many victims from an abusive relationship end up being in denial. They keep thinking that it will never happen again, they also think they are alone. Leslie talks about her journey and her relationship with her abusive boyfriend and soon husband. Love is blinding and one of the first signs of a domestic abuser is idolizing their partner and then isolating them from their friends and family. • 5. European And Non-European Expansion In The 1500s And 1600s Europeans had many ambitions throughout the 1500s and 1600s. To achieve their goals, they deferred to the non European culture. The main question remains: how did the Europeans accommodate themselves to Non European culture? The European traders and missionaries would accommodate themselves by integrating into the Non European culture, by adapting their physical appearance, by referring to the traditional practices, and through the response of the native people wants to European goods. For Europe s influence to be successful across the world, they had a guide written by Father Jean de BrГ©beuf, called Instructions for The Fathers of Our Society Who Shall Be Sent to The Hurons. In this small guide, Father Jean, writes instruction for other European members to follow in order to be successful in their influence in the new world. The thought of being the superior race, followed them to the new world, so embracing a culture that they thought was low class, was a big change to the European men. As to the other numerous things which may be unpleasant, they must be endured for the love of God, without saying anything or appearing to notice them. They did not do anything that contradicts the Natives belief, as they were trying to convert them to the idealized culture. They were doing so in a way that the Natives did not realize they were being converted. So, the Europeans change their normal customs, to gain their trust. This essay will then consider that convergence towards a single model is unlikely due to path dependence and cultural differences between countries. Nevertheless, pressures should result in convergence towards a hybrid model in the near future. This essay will conclude that lack of complete convergence may not be a negative, given the various problems associated with the SM. The shareholder oriented model Hansmann and Kraakman implicitly assume that the SM is identical across the US and UK, ignoring several differences. The historical origins and balance of responsibilities of both systems are distinct , with the UK taking a principles based approach and the US taking a rules based method . Nevertheless, both systems take the broad approach that shareholders ought to have complete control over the company, with managers managing for shareholders benefit and minority shareholders being protected . This model is characterised by the power of the General Meeting , inclusion of non executive directors on the Board , move towards greater financial transparency and independent audit committees . Drivers towards convergence Hansmann and Kraakman s arguments were based on three claims: the ideological claim, efficiency claim and the factual claim . Yet, these failed to consider changing global circumstances and other nuances. Efficiency claim It was claimed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Executive Order History As the Founders of the United States and the Framers of the Constitution started designing the government of the new United States, they made sure to balance the powers of the three branches of government in order to create a fair and equal government. However, these intelligent men knew very well that they could not actually create a perfect government, and as a result, some branches of government possess certain powers that allow them to overpower the other branches. One of these powers is an executive order, which the President can use in some situations. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first use of an executive order came on April 22, 1793, when President George Washington used an executive order to instruct federal officers to prosecute U.S. citizens who became involved in the war between France and England. During the early to mid 19th century, Presidents used executive orders; however, these executive orders were often not very controversial. Controversy surrounding executive orders starting to sweep the nation again in 1861 when President Lincoln issued an executive order in the months preceding the Civil War. During the early months of 1861, a Southerner named John Merryman led a group of Southern rebels through Maryland and Virginia fighting federal troops. Eventually, when federal officials captured John Merryman, his attorneys argued that he had a right to see a judge before spending more time in prison. In response, President Lincoln issued an executive order suspending habeas corpus, which is a suspect s right to see a judge after they taken to prison. In the years following the Civil War and the early 20th century, the use of executive orders continued to rise. Due to President Theodore Roosevelt s belief in expanding the powers of the executive branch, he quickly became the first President to issue more than 1,000 executive orders during his presidency. However, Franklin D. Roosevelt s support for New Deal legislation and laws led to him issuing 3,522 executive orders during his time in office (the most of any President of the United States). Furthermore, as history progressed, Presidents continued to utilize executive orders. Not including President Trump s executive orders, the only executive orders to be struck down were orders issued by President Truman and President Clinton. President Truman s executive order allowed the national government to seize control of all steel mills in order to prevent a worker strike. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 10. John Berger and History In his first essay of Ways of Seeing, John Berger claims that all power, authority, and meaning that was once held by an original work of art has been lost through the mass reproduction of these works that has occurred in recent years. He writes of an entirely bogus religiosity (116 117) that surrounds these art objects and that the meaning of the original work no longer lies in what it uniquely says but in what it uniquely is (117). He claims that because of reproduction, the art of the past no longer exists as it once did (127). In using that word, he is referring to the social exploitation of the past: how the rich were painted, patronizing poor artists (i.e. Hals), and in this fashion demonstrating the monopoly the wealth and upper class had on the arts. To support his argument, he writes that reproduction is used all the time to promote the illusion that nothing has changed except that the masses, thanks to reproduction, can now begin to appreciate art as the cultured minority once did. Understandably, the masses remain uninterested and skeptical (127). He claims that the masses don t appreciate the art because it is not a part of their history. It seems that because of this, however, the art has not really lost any integrity anyway. The only change is that now, anyone who wishes to access it is able to, but it still holds an esoteric quality that the cultural elite can enjoy. Berger shows that the majority of the population does not attend museums. Does not this give them power that the rich can still enjoy, while making it possible for the masses to experience as well if they want to? Reproduction has opened the lines of education of culture as well. Before reproduction, the rich were the only ones who owned art, attended the opera, and the like, but it is probable that these people only attended these functions to show off their wealth, without really knowing or caring about the ... • 11. Nikola Tesla The Forgotten Father Of The Modern Age Nikola Tesla: The Forgotten Father of the Modern Age The inventors of this world are artists. Maybe not in the traditional way of those such as Van Gogh or Beethoven, but they are masters of creativity nonetheless. Each has had a hand in painting modern society, brushing on improvements, recreating civilization with newer and better technology, making it more and more superior with each passing year. One such father of society is Nikola Tesla. Throughout his lifetime, he added many strokes to the painting of technology. Though his contributions were great, he received very little recognition for his work, making him the greatest tragic hero of the twentieth century. Born in 1856 Croatia, Tesla immigrated to America in 1884. Charles Bachelor, a good friend of his, referred him to Thomas Edison for work. In his letter he said I know two great men, Edison. One is you and the other is this young man. From then on, Tesla worked in Edison s labs, improving designs as they were prepared for patent. One day though, there came a breaking point in their professional relationship: Edison offered Tesla $50,000 dollars (modern equivalent of $1,000,000) if he could make improvements to Edison s direct current patents. Within the time of a few months, Tesla presented a new design with vast improvements. When asked for the money, Edison is said to have replied: Tesla, you don t understand our American humor . Both Arthur Miller s The Crucible and George Clooney s Good Night, and Good Luck explore the theme of McCarthyism through numerous ways using conventions of their text types: respectively a play and a film. Each through characterisation and symbolism, as well as individually through the plays title and narrative style, and the films editing, camera techniques and sound track, the texts delve into the subject constructively through their own unique methods. Also in the graphology of the piece I have used dashes in order to more effectively show where the reader would give a slight pause. An example is in a hundred compressions a minute just under two a second . In the third paragraph in particular, the sentences were too complex so having originally written them as one complex sentence in the pluperfect tense, I broke them down in to one point per sentence and put them in the present tense so that it would be easier to understand. I also changed some of the verbs that were in the present tense into the imperative form because it made the phonology sharper and clearer for the audience to hear. One example is in the sentence After you have returned to the casualty and rechecked their breathing and they are not breathing or if the likely cause of unconsciousness is trauma or drowning and they are not breathing, you now give two rescue breaths . The sentence was much too long and confusing so I changed it to When you return to the casualty re check their breathing. If they are not breathing or if the likely cause ... • 17. Essay Managing Employee Retention and Turnover Managing Employee Retention and Turnover Employee retention has always been an important focus for human resource managers. Once a company has invested time and money to recruit and train a good employee, it is in their own best interest to retain that employee, to further develop and motivate him so that he continues to provide value to the organization. But, employers must also recognize and tend to what is in the best interest of their employees, if they intend to keep them. When a company overlooks the needs of its employees and focuses only on the needs of the organization, turnover often results. Excessive turnover in an organization is a prime indicator that something is not right in the employee environment. We will look at ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A recent survey by The Society for Human Resource Management ranked tuition reimbursement programs and vacation/holiday time as the top two retention initiatives being offered by employers. In addition, instant recognition programs, such as spot bonuses, are being used to reward excellence in performance as it occurs. Such programs give employees immediate gratification for their efforts rather than delaying it until annual reviews. Also, flexible work hours and telecommuting programs that allow employees to better balance their work commitments with their family duties are becoming more common. Turnover of employees can be involuntary or voluntary. When a company lets go of an employee who has been a bad performer, has violated company policy, or broken a law it is usually considered involuntary turnover. So are layoffs. • 18. Summary Of The Banking Concept Of Education Dominants and Subordinates in Education In The Banking Concept of Education, from the Pedagogy of the Oppressed, Revised Edition, Paulo Freire discusses two different types of education: banking and problem posing. The banking concept of education is when teachers make deposits which the students patiently receive, memorize, and repeat (318), and problem posing is when the teachers and students are equal. Instead of being treated as human beings that have their own thoughts and ideas, students are treated as containers that are simply filled by a powerful being, a teacher. In school, teachers are dominants that provide knowledge to the students, the subordinates; the knowledge that students learn are limited to what they re taught by teachers. Similarly, in Kurt Wimmer s Equilibrium , Librians are treated as reservoirs for knowledge. In the movie Equilibrium , everyone follows the demands of the Father, such as kill people who have feelings, and agree with whatever the Father says. Emotions are what cause people to have differences in opinions, which is why the Father did not want people having any feelings; to prevent disputes. They used a mind altering drug called prozium to encourage obedience and prevent people from having their own thoughts. To make matters worse, in the movie, there are numerous screens in which a taped recording of the Father is presented to all of Libra s inhabitants; they were being brainwashed. Kids Should Not Have Recess Essay Did you Know, every year the U.S emergency departments treat more than 200,000 children ages 14 and younger for recess and playground injuries that happen in school. Recess has always been a dangerous place and a waste of time for school hours. Ever since it began back in 1834 in New England. When Amos Bronson Alcott was the one who thought he came up with a great idea. The idea to have recess in the first place, but when he started recess did he think about kids safety, and that they would probably either shorten kids classes which means a smaller education.I strongly believe kids should not have recess. If kids need exercise they can do it in P.E and get some of their energy out. P.E is a great way to get that energy out and exercise. Recess can also be a very dangerous place, kids can get fractures, internal injuries, concussions, and dislocations. Recess is dangerous and kids don t need it. Personally I believe kids should not have recess in school because recess can be a waste of time for school hours. Kids get enough exercise in PE so they can get enough energy out, but also enough to still do class. Spiritual emergence is a gradual unfoldment of spiritual expression that causes a minimal disturbance in our everyday functioning because we are somewhat prepared for it, given our disposition for the mystical. On the other hand, there are those who experience what we call religious emergencies, which can cause significant disruptions in their everyday living, because these folks are usually unprepared for mystical experiences since they consider themselves to be more religious than spiritual. Quintilian has a few ideas about what constitutes an orator and what bars a person from that title. Quintilian might have a hard time labelling Iago based on his outlines for an orator in his Institutes of Oratory . Shakespeare clearly wrote Iago with the intention of embodying vice, anger, and revenge in Othello . However, Iago s eloquence and rhetorical prowess may be at odds with Quintilian s manual. This ruse baits Othello into thinking that he needs the knowledge that Iago has, and that it is more important and valid than it really is while setting Othello into a state of mind to truly consider and believe the implications that Iago is making. This line also plays upon Othello s assumption and belief that Iago wants not only what is best for him, but that Iago would sacrifice himself for him. Therefore, Iago uses rhetoric to make imaginary faults plausible. Next, Iago is a character who adapts to each event, occasion, and position that he find himself in. • 28. Punishment That Befits The Sin Essay Myles P. Toe Professor Cynthia Gaw World literature 11 November 2016 Punishment that Befits the Sin Dante s Inferno originally named The Divine Comedy or in modern Italian The Commedia , follows the contemporary Christian ethos by showing how the consequences of man are equal to their sins; passed upon them in death. The physical sins that man does on earth if not repented of, will then become their eternal consequence in Hell. Dante shows us in his travels through the circles of hell how this suffering is the direct and equal result of their earthly sins. The sins of the cowardice, the lustful, gluttonous, greedy, angry, heretical, violent, fraudulent and treacherous have their bodies in constant pain equivalent of the actions of their human bodies on earth. The thesis of this paper is to show how physical pain enacted upon corporeal bodies in hell, are the logical consequence of sin on earth. I will show this by citing examples of sinners featured in The inferno that are tortured for the sins in their respective layer of hell. The Inferno is based directly upon Dante s devout catholic nature. The inferno is mixed with the bible, roman Catholicism, mythology and medieval tradition with a direct influence of 14th century roman Catholicism. The passage concerning purgatory is a direct indoctrination from roman Catholicism and is not found anywhere in the bible. When she is introduced in the movie, she had no love, no family, no self esteem, and was only concerned about the basic needs in life like safety and security. In simpler terms, the United States frequently exercised power throughout the 20th century. However, with the emergence of the European Unionand it s recent economic rise rivaling that of the United States, some scholars begin to question whether the United States will be able to maintain its role in the international arena and what the role of the European Union will be. • 37. Similarities Between Gattaca And The Chrysalids This poster represents the similarities between the movie Gattaca and the book the Chrysalids. In both stories the setting takes place in a distant dystopian future. Also both stories show the different types of dystopian futures. In Gattaca it shows a future ruled by order and in chrysalids it shows a future ruled by chaos, I showed this by drawing a clean city and a destroyed city. Another similar theme between the stories is perfection, in both the movie and the book. Society thinks you can only be accepted if you are deemed perfect any abnormality and you are labeled an invalid or deviant. To find any abnormality the government has to examine your body, in Gattaca they look a lot more deeper, at your DNA, but in Chrysalids they look ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. Stalin and His Creation of a Gulag One of the most brutal mistakes made by Stalin was the creation of a GULAG. It is difficult to give a precise characterization of its purpose. The aim of this work is to answer the question, Can we generalize why certain people were able to survive the Gulag more than others? To survive the Gulag, many prisoners had to fight with others for food, shelter, and simple medical care. Certain prisoners went into religious and intellectual meditations to preserve at least the appearance of intelligence. The survival required willpower, strength of mind, skills, mercilessness, and a lot of luck. Every former Gulag prisoner explained his/her survival as a result of many insignificant strategies. A variety of memoirists claimed that the only reason why they have survived was due to their spiritual life. To distract themselves for the physical sufferings, many prisoners created mental exercises: religious rituals, music, art, cards, chess, and literature. Prisoners used to write and read poetry to each other, told stories, discussed philosophy and history. Under such harsh conditions, the prisoners were required to have an extraordinary imagination. To play cards or paint, they had to use anything that was easy to hide from the regular raids in the barracks. The tree core was used as a canvas and any blood was used as paint. The Soviet Union created a system that forced prisoners to constantly fight with each other. Being imprisoned led up to despair. Many were driven to commit ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 39. The Most Influential Person In My Life, My Nanny The Most Influential Person in My life, My Nanny As children grow, they always look up to someone special in their life someone that they can trust and is always there for them. This person is someone that they admire and hope to be like someday. The person that I ve described best fits my Nanny. She knows all the right things and is there whenever I need her. My Nanny is one of the most important people in my life and I m so esthetic that I have her. It took me ten years when I was finally old enough to realize what an extraordinary influence my nanny has been in my life. My Nanny has made very careful and thoughtful decisions and choices for the way my life turned out. Growing up she was such a huge role model on my life and shaped it. Since birth, she has been the only consistent person that I have had in my life. Once my parents were making bad choices and decisions, the Department of Family and Children services got called due to me missing tons of school, falling behind, and never knowing what I would be waking up to. My nanny was the one who saved me from being placed in foster care. My Nanny was there to take and fill both parents absence in my life. My Nanny was there for my all of my firsts that occurred as an infant. Most of these instances all came to be because of her. I was never hungry since she always kept me full and when it came time to walk and talk she was there. When it came to most days, a lot of our free time was spent either outside planting or ... • 40. Iago, the Outsider of Shakespeare’s Othello In any story with a recurring dark theme there always must be an outsider from humanity who somehow stands out from the seemingly equal community. In the case of Shakespeare s Othello the outsider from humanity would be Iago for he truly stands out from the rest of society. Although Othello may be physically put out of the community, it seems that on an emotional and egotistical level Iagoputs himself out of society further then Othellos blackness does. He is not merely manipulative, as other villains are; he turns aspects of truth and good qualities, which he does not possess, and uses them as weakness for his own scheme. He deceives people to follow his plans by telling them the truth and what seems to be good advice. By standing on... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Iago has no conscience and therefore unlike Othello or any other tragic hero asks for no redemption. One of Iago s astucious qualities is his ability to take the good quality of others and use them against them. He takes it even further, however, as he has no realization of the evil he has done. Iago suspects Othello may have slept with his wife. He is not positive, but says that surety is not necessary. Iago But for my sport and profit. I hate the Moor, And it is thought abroad that twixt my sheets H as done my office. I know not if t be true, But I, for mere suspicion in that kind, Will do, as if for surety. (I, iii, 379 381) This shows how Iago isn t really concerned about Emilia being unfaithful with Othello or anyone for that matter. He just wants to ruin Othello beyond reason. Iago takes what most of us see as good and uses those traits against characters in the play. He is able to take something as pure as Othello and Desdemona s love or Cassio s loyalty as a weakness that he can pounce on. He holds me well; The better shall my purpose work on him. (I, iii, 381 382) Iago possesses no good qualities so as a jealous pay back he takes trust and turns it against the trusting and then tries to take it even further for himself. • 41. No Tolerance For A Lack Of Maternity Leave Zero Tolerance For A Lack Of Maternity Leave Whenever we hear a story on the news of a woman or her family struggling because they re being refused maternity leave it breaks our hearts. These women, expecting mothers, have to carry or have carried a child for roughly 9 months. Most if not all have done so by being on their feet all day and have only had the required minimum for breaks. Is it then wrong to ask for maternity leave? Should pregnant women not be allowed some work accommodations? Well, contrary to popular belief, maternity leave is more than just a time for a woman s gestation period or relaxation. In a country with a population of more than 308 million women I think maternity should be a right. So, then who is to blame for the lack of maternity leave? The answer: male bosses. It s thanks to these bosses that once women are mothers, they have to go back to work as soon as possible. All these new mothers are told by their male bosses that they are expected back as soon as they can. These men allow little to no maternity leave for women in the work force. And I think we can all agree that this is a serious issue for our nation. There must be a solution to this detrimental illness afflicting our country. Which is why I have proposed a solution that will benefit not only women but our whole nation. If male bosses are forced to wear maternity belts they will feel sympathetic to the struggles of pregnant women. They in turn will be motivated to give paid maternity ... Agent Host Environment model, according to Leavell and Clark, is beneficial for investigative causes of disease in an individual. The model attempts to explain how the interconnection of three separate elements correlates to affect an individual health status. The agent host environmental model suggests, how certain factors must be present or absent for an illness to occur; and as a result of such external factor a living organism is capable of being adversely infected or affected by outside influences (Leavell and Clark, 1965). Based on the latest Census review, more than half of Americans with dementia due to AD are at the moderate or severe stages of the disease. The accumulating care burdens associated with the progression of AD place considerable stress on caregivers and families of the person with AD, and often determine whether that person is placed in a nursing home. Furthermore, greater impairments in cognition, ADL, and behavior are associated with higher societal costs of AD related care. Successful symptomatic therapies, particularly in the moderate and severe stages of the disease, may provide substantial health and quality of life benefits, not only for the patient, but also for those in their caregiving network via reduced AD related burden and stress. Moreover, effective treatment of symptoms may also delay nursing home placement and help reduce costs related to patient care (Cummings et al., ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 43. Ticking Tension And Silent Screams Sara Frank Dr. Schreiber Film 270 23 October 2016 Ticking Tension and Silent Screams: Examining Sound in We Need To Talk About Kevin In director Lynne Ramsay s We Need To Talk About Kevin (2011), dialogue serves as just one of many modes of sound used to guide the narrative. Through a series of flashbacks and flash forwards, orchestrated by diegetic and non diegetic sounds, the film follows Eva Khatchadourian (Tilda Swinton), mother of baby Kevin (Ricky Duer) and, later, teenage Kevin (Ezra Miller), as she recalls the influential events leading up to and the aftermath of Kevin murdering his peers and family with his bow and arrow. While this gruesome film actually displays little violence on the screen, the properties of sound create the horror and trepidation experienced by the audience. Perceptual properties of sound, including loudness and timbre, internal diegetic sounds, Eva s thoughts and sonic flashbacks, and the use of silence when viewing interactions between Eva and Kevin, shape the audience s understanding of the film. The film employs on screen and off screen diegetic sounds such as screaming, crying, and ticking and highlights objects/sounds which act as motifs. Additionally, non diegetic sound created through the soundtrack lends a sense of irony to different scenarios. While visuals and audio work together to create the film, sounds in particular shape the spectator s perspective while allowing opportunities for further interpretation. In the opening ... • 45. Essay On Mad Cow Disease 1.1 Prions Prions are an incongruous pathogen that is causative of transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSE); a group of fatal neurodegenerative diseases found in mammals. This abnormal proteinaceous particle is believed to be a post translational mutation of a normal cellular protein found in the brain (Emmanuel, 2002). This naturally occurring pathogen acts similarly to a viral infection, however as it lacks nucleic acid it is invulnerable to death via means of antibiotics or sterilisation. PrPc and PrPsc, the known prion proteins indicative of TSE s, are known to bind to the surface of neurons and fold these proteins into an abstract spongiform structure. Although the process inducing this folding mechanism is unknown, it is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As no detection program existed, these waste products were often scrapie infested. It is believed that the rendering process that existed at the time allowed the prion agent to survive, mutate and overcome the species barrier to infect cattle (NCBA, 2017). 1.4 Symptoms and Detection Clinical signs generally appear in cattle that are more than 30 months old. Incubation tends to last 4 to 6 years before finally killing the host. This extended lifespan is due to the spine and brain being targeted late in the incubation period (NCBA, 2017). Currently no TSE detection test exists for live animals; official diagnosis can only be made through an examination of brain tissue. Studies have detected BSE most commonly in the brain, optic nerve and spinal cord. As such, diagnosis must be made through observation of behavior. Common symptoms include; deranged temperament, unusual posture, lack of coordination, muscle tremors, decreased milk production and decreased body mass despite maintained appetite (National Cattlemen s Beef Association, 2017). These iconic drunken mannerisms coined the term Mad Cow Disease . It is noteworthy that not all affected cattle display symptoms. These carriers amplified outbreaks as they were similarly rendered into ruminant protein rations. 1.5 Transmission BSE is generally transmitted through the digestion of a contaminated vector (meat).
