Memory Retention Study
Various Forms of Memory Retention Techniques and
My Personal Study Habits
Various memory retention techniques have been identified throughout the centuries. Several sources
have explained why these techniques should be used and of their effectiveness. More recently, a 2009
report was released by Association for Psychological Science, where learning techniques were
analyzed and their effectiveness explained. Some of the techniques from this report will be mentioned,
but the focus is more on how each that are presented relate to my own personal experience towards.
Memory Retention Techniques
There are various means that enables information to be encoded in memory and retrieved or recalled
as needed. Of the various means, some are effective ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Within the scope of studying high school and college level subject areas, my choices among the
techniques would be represented in the methods which are described within state dependent memory
and within order effects. Consequently, rarely is the material that is studied grouped into certain
categories beyond how it is originally presented, nor is the material digested with the use of additional
aids. The most preferred methods seem to relate more with my state of consciousness. When studying
or preparing prior to a test, most definitely I will have consumed some form of caffeine. Although
wishing to be well rested, my time management and lifestyle does not always allow for this luxury.
While studying, the preference is to be within a specific environment, avoiding too many external
distractions. Even so, listening to my favorite music through my headphones, lifts my mood and
provides me the focus needed. Lastly, I enjoy being quizzed with virtual flashcards while walking
outdoors, which combines order effects technique with a state dependent method. Unfortunately, it
may not be the purest form of a state dependent method, since for example, exams are not given while
walking through a park.
Effectiveness of my personal study habits. Without controls and specific conditions, that appear
crucial to support effectiveness with any of these retention methods, it is hard to assert my preferred
choice as effective or ineffective with learning in general. With confidence, I can state that I succeeded
to achieve my desired outcome. I have been maintaining an A average majority of my educational
career. I have experienced considerable success in more recent years when I have incorporated several
of techniques mentioned above.

Basic Legal Contract Principles For A Contract
The above scenario is difficult to analyse due to there being no executed contract documentation to
review such as a specification or terms and conditions to base a recommendation upon. Basic legal
contract principles should therefore be applied to establish if a contract was in place, if it had been
breached, along with potential remedies applied to each party. To identify if there was a breach of
contract between John (the client) and Chris (the Contractor) it is key to establish if there was a legally
binding contract in place. In order for a contract to be deemed legally binding , it must abide by three
key elements which are offer, consideration and acceptance. The sum of £6,000 was offered for the
service and subsequently agreed consideration completed by Chris whom accepted. With the capacity
of both directors, including intent from both parties to carry out their promise, a contract was formed.
As part of the contract negotiations £1,000 was paid in advance to Chris, without any identified agreed
terms and conditions. Advanced payments in contracts such as these are typically used to purchase the
materials required to undertake the work. It is to be assumed that the £1,000 advanced payment was
used to purchase the paint required to carry out the works. The remaining £5,000 was due to Chris
once the works were completed to a satisfactory level. When agreeing to the terms of the contract,
John clearly sets a requirement of the works being satisfactory. The

To What Extent Does a Marxist Reading of Lord of the Flies...
To what extent does a Marxist reading of Lord of the Flies lead to a fuller understanding of the novel?
Lord of the Flies is based almost entirely on Golding s view that evil is an inherent force in every man,
man produces evil as a bee produces honey . Golding acquired this belief while he was a soldier in the
Second World War. From that point on, he became extremely pessimistic about human nature, calling
it the disease of being human . This belief is shown very clearly, as he puts innocent children on a
deserted island, free of all corruption; free of an external threat, therefore with no need of an army;
abundant in food and supplies, therefore with no need to steal. Therefore, what evil was left could only

pig Napoli overthrows the power of Snowball because lot of the animals liked and approved to
Snowball more, much like Jack overthrows Ralph for the same reason. This gives rise to Karl Marx s
argument that It is not the consciousness of men that determines their existence, but their social
existence that determines their consciousness . This means that as both novels were produced by the
socio political and economic circumstances, namely the Cold War, a dystopian era. The Marxist theory
of Class Conflict also helps us understand the novel better. It could be argued that the groups that form
on the island can be considered as classes . As the boys splinter into factions, some behave peacefully
and work together to maintain order and achieve common goals, while others rebel and seek only
anarchy and violence. It could be seen that Ralph and Piggy are the ruling class, the bourgeoisie, and
Jack and his hunters are the working class, the proletariat. This is because Ralph clearly establishes his
role as the chief, with an almost unanimous consent from the boys, which gives him the power to rule
over them. Alternatively, it could be argued that Jack possesses the highest Class status on the island,
due to his ownership of the choir, his hunters, he says to Ralph, See? They do what I want . Here it
could clearly be seen that Jack and his group no longer

A Critical Analysis Of Michael Vick s Article
In previous research done by Kristi Grim she examined the coverage of Michael Vick, an African
American quarterback accused of running a dog fighting ring, and Roethlisberger, a white NFL
quarterback, who like Vick also had a bright football career and was accused of sexual assault (Grim,
2013). She performed a qualitative research analysis examining the dominant frame in each local
newspaper, and how the journalist established the frame in the story. In her research she reviewed the
Atlanta Journal Constitution (AJC) for stories on Michael Vick s dog fighting accusations, and the
Pittsburgh Post Gazette (PPG) for stories involving Roethlisberger s rape accusations (Grim, 2013). In
her research she only focused on articles that happened before the district attorney announced
Roethlisberger would not be charged, and before Vick was charged to avoid this having an impact on
the way the media portrayed the story. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The negative frame is defined as those frames that feature more adverse tone toward the athlete and
are likely to leave the reader with a negative impression (Grim, 2013). To establish this frame,
journalists are more likely to use accusatory quotes, provide information that implies the athlete is

In August 1921, Franklin Delano Roosevelt s world was shattered. While at his retreat at Campobello,

The House of Seven Gables as a Gothic Novel Essay
The House of Seven Gables as a Gothic Novel
To be a paradigm of a Gothic novel, The House of Seven Gables needs to include many elements, all
which center on the ideas of gloom, horror, and mystery. The action of a Gothic novel takes place in a
run down, abandoned or occupied, mansion or castle, which often include secret passages, doors, and
compartments (Encarta). The mansion also adds its own flavor and variety to the atmosphere of
mystery and suspense in the novel by providing a dark and gloomy setting where the story takes place.
The basis of mystery and suspense in the atmosphere of the novel feeds off of an unexplained or
supernatural event in the present or from past generations (Harris). The unexplained ... Show more

The inclusion of the elements of suspense, mystery, and gloom in a novel, along with the occurrence
of supernatural and unexplained events, provide support for the novel as a Gothic piece of literature.
By including all the elements, which standardize the content and atmosphere of the novel in the The
House of Seven Gables, Nathaniel Hawthorne develops an exemplary example of a Gothic piece of
literature.
To be considered a Gothic novel, The House of Seven Gables needs to first fulfill the requirements of
the setting, including a once aristocratic run down mansion or castle with many secret doors, passages,
and compartments. The elements in the setting produce effects in the development of the mysterious
and gloomy atmosphere. In the early years of the Pyncheon family, Colonel Pyncheon steals the
domicile and land of Mathew Maule out of greed and fulfillment of his superiority as an aristocrat.
Colonel Pyncheon constructs the House of Seven Gables on Pyncheon Street, over the grave of the
restless Mathew Maule, inheriting the curse of death within its walls. The anathema of death Mathew
Maule sentences the residents House of Seven Gables to results in a scarcity of inhabitants, due to the
fear for their lives, and therefore the house becomes extremely dark and lonesome to the later
generations. The lack of denizens to upkeep the house results in the house itself showing the signs of
the melancholy and gloom it contains, mirroring the

Furthermore, there is a high degree of control ensuring that a cause effect relationship can be
recognised between variables. However, the use of the laboratory experiment can be criticised for
producing results that lack in ecological validity. This is because the research took place in an artificial

situations of conformity. There are also issues regarding this study as the study was only carried out
with male students who all belonged to the same aged group as a result the sample was gender bias
and therefore the results cannot be generalised for females or older groups of people. The study hence
lacks population validity. In addition, there are ethical issues regarding the study as the participants
were deceived about the purpose of the experiment and it is possible that the participants were
exposed to embarrassing procedures when the real reason of the study was revealed which could

Ww1 Unit 1 Research Paper
There were long term and short term causes of WWI. While the long term causes made war inevitable,
the short term causes provided the spark that started the war. The first long term cause was the rise of
nationalism. This was a general rise in pride for your country, and the belief that your country is better
than anybody else s. Many of the other causes of war contributed to the rise of nationalism, including
imperialism, militarism, and the industrial revolution. Confederations of states that would eventually
link up like Italy and Germany finally unified as one country. Instead of being split up, they were one
force. Part of nationalism was militarism, because one of the ideal things to build up as a country is

In these policies, European countries would claim land as their own in other parts of the world that
weren t as developed, like Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Tension would rise between these
countries because of this claiming of land, especially when it came to Africa. It was called the
Scramble for Africa, and almost all of Africa was taken under control by European powers, so
territorial conflicts were not uncommon. This ties into nationalism because as these countries gained
confidence, they spread their influence throughout the less developed world. Another movement that
could be attributed to the start of WWI is the industrial revolution, It started in England but eventually

Mentoring Programs For A Mentoring Program
In today s volatile business world, it is vital for organizations to engage employees both intellectually
and emotionally. Through mentoring, employees identify themselves as a vital part of the organization
while creating a heightened level of ownership. Mentoring programs are of great value to any
organization. In most cases, these programs are considered essential. By developing and implementing
a mentoring program, the learning process for employees is accelerated. It is said that mentoring can
can accomplish things that training cannot (Johnson). Though, developing a mentoring program is not
an easy task, the benefits outweigh the challenges. A mentoring program will help alleviate high
employee turnover and assist in building a pipeline of diverse employees.
The development of a mentoring program begins by deciding on whether it should be a formal or

business objective of the organization 2. Established goals 3. Measurable outcomes 4. Expert training
and support 4. Direct organizational benefits and 5. Mentoring engagements lasting 9 12 months (

Unspecified goals 2. Unknown outcomes 3. Self selection of mentors and mentees 4. No expert
training or support 5. Long term mentorship and 6. Indirect organizational benefits ( Business

Total Quality Management Is Defined As A Companywide Essay
Total quality management is defined as a companywide effort to continually improve the ways people,
machines, and systems accomplish work. Management gurus William Edwards Deming, Joseph
Moses Juran, and Philip Bayard Crosby and their philosophies on improving quality and performance
excellence lead to frameworks. The U.S. Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award and the
international ISO 9000 certification and the Six Sigma concept are frame works known worldwide. By
implementing these frameworks and concepts, companies have improved overall quality from the
products and services as well as improving the employees and customers standard of living. When the
company goes to implement total quality management, some of its core values are driven in order to
improve the quality of the company. Those values are having methods and processes designed to meet
the needs of internal and external customers, giving every employee in the organization training in
quality, having quality designed into a product or service so that errors are prevented from occurring,
rather than being detected and corrected in an error prone product or service, the organization
promotes cooperation with vendors, suppliers, and customers to improve quality and hold down cost,
and managers measure progress with feedback based on data. (Page 41 42, Noe)
The concept of total quality management was applying statistical theory to control the quality of
products. Later after world war two, Japan made

Research On The Methods Of Surveying
Surveys and Happiness: A study on the different techniques used to persuade individuals to participate
in survey taking
By: Zachary Bernal
University of Kansas
Abstract
Many studies have been done regarding researchers abilities to obtain information from individuals
from various methods of surveying. Drawing on the social psychological factors of persuasion and
compliance, studies have shown that if individuals receive something from the researcher (e.g. money,
conversation, advice) they are much more likely to agree to participate in the survey due to the norms
of reciprocity (Groves et al., 1992). Another key factor in determining people s compliance with a
request draws on the ideas that individuals in a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Over the years I started to wonder what the most effective way was to address new customers.
Sometimes I would approach them and before I say a word they already dismiss me with an, I m good,
thanks. Making it quite clear they don t want my help or anything I m selling. So I started to ask
myself what leads to the most customer involvement and willingness to be sold to? I finally began to
notice that if the customer was simply asked how their day was going, or first primed with casual
conversation before asking if they needed any help on the sales floor, they were much more likely to
request my help or ask a question. These interactions between customers lead to broader implications
of persuasion and compliance. Compliance is defined as, Responding favorably to an explicit request
by another person. (Gilovich, et al., 2013). Persuasion is defined as, The action of influencing
someone or of being influenced to do or believe something. (Gillath, 2014). These mechanisms of
persuasion and compliance could carry larger implications outside of the retail setting. It seems as
though people are much more likely to be compliant to a request and succumb to persuasion if they
are in a better mood. Therefore, if salespeople, telemarketers, charities, and other institutions were to
add a more personal experience to their target they will increase the likelihood of that individual to be
persuaded or

Jason Seldon s Letter
CDA News has reported both on the open letter from Taylor Swift to Apple and the open leter
response to the recording artist by photographer Jason Seldon. In Swift s letter, she says Apple is
being unfair to recording artists by giving subscribers free access for three months and not pay
recording artists royalties. Seldon s letter is becoming a voice for photojournalism in the 21st century,
saying what so many photographers have faced during what is best described as a rights war with the
music industry.
Seldon s response to Swift s rant says that it is hypocritical of her to take this stance when
photographers at her concerts are forced to sign over the rights to their photos to her and her
management company, Firefly Entertainment, Inc. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

agreement that was a rights grab and he was going fix this error. However, Franti s response is rare.
Normally there is no response from management companies or artists.
Now, photographers, newspapers, and other photojournalism outlets are taking a stand against these

Persuasive Essay On The SAT
It all started back in 1926 when the first SAT was administered to high school students. The Scholastic
Aptitude Test (SAT) is a test dreaded by high school students, given to them spring of junior year. It s
goal is to academically test students to see if they would be a good fit in that certain college and play a
role in admissions. More and more schools have been finding that the SAT provides neither an
accurate nor helpful view of its applicants (Flore) . Over time it s becoming more accepted that the
SAT doesn t show the students ability. In the U.S. there are already 850 colleges that are SAT optional,
meaning that they don t require test scores in admissions. Grade point average and AP tests showcase
the students academic skill more. Colleges should get rid of the reliance on SAT scores in admissions.
It s been proven that these test taking abilities don t properly gauge a student s ability to perform. The
tests center is math and english, but with so much content it can be hard for a student to study. It s not
like a regular quiz in class where the student knows the exact material. WIth the SAT having influence
on college admissions students feel like they can move their grades to the bottom of their priorities.
According to a study done by Princeton, it found that going SAT optional would result in classes of
students with higher grade point averages, Dropping testing entirely, on the other hand, would result in
higher levels of academic achievement in the

The Head-Smashed-In Buffalo-Jump Site in South-West...
First explored in 1938, the Head Smashed In Buffalo Jump site in south west Alberta, Canada is an
archaeological goldmine. Named after a child who was watching the event unfold that was hit with a
falling buffalo, HSIBJ site tells a gruesome story. As one of the oldest and most preserved kill sites in
the world, HSIBJ is scientifically and anthropologically significant. For six thousand years, this site
was used by Plains People as a hunting ground, herding multiple buffalo off of a cliff to their deaths,
as a means of survival. The magnitude of the HSIBJ site helps shed light on the hunting patterns of
other groups that are still in the area today. SouthWest Alberta is part of a gorgeous landscape of
grassy plains and rocky cliffside. The east is covered in high grass and prairies, while the west is a
mixture of cacti, sage and short grasses. The plains people experience extreme weather cold, frigid
winters and scorching summers. Across the landscape are large herds of buffalo, bears, deer, antelope
and coyotes. The plains people were separated by patriarchal bands groups of 50 to 100 individuals,
connected by marriage or kinship. The men hunted, led religious ceremonies and were the medical
experts. Each band was lead by a single man, the headman who exemplified the behavior the plains
people wished to have. Each band had around 40 tipis made of animal hide, that were portable and
easily constructed. The diet of the plains people consisted mainly of buffalo and

Overconsumption Of Antibiotics
Why does the over prescription of antibiotic medication lead to a negative economic and societal
outcome?
Increasing bacterial resistance to antibiotic treatments has become a worldwide issue over the last 20
years as consumer and general practitioner s incentives for a quick fix to minor illnesses have caused a
negative externality for the consumption of antibiotics. A negative externality in this example is when
a third party, in this case, society as a whole, is adversely affected by the overconsumption of
antibiotics, due to greater bacterial resistance, causing more advanced diseases that pose a greater risk
to the health of a society. The roles played by consumers, doctors and pharmaceutical manufacturers
will be discussed in detail ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Most antibiotics require a prescription from a medical professional such as a general practitioner or
specialist. According to research published in the Medical Journal of Australia during 2017: GP s have
been prescribing antibiotics nine times more often than what the guidelines state. Doctors, like
consumers, are driven by their own incentives. There is a strong incentive for GP s to prescribe
antibiotics to patients which may not necessarily require them, due to the pressure on a doctor s time
to attend to as many patients as possible. Therefore, doctors can be incentivised to undertake the
simplest solution, rather than sacrifice the amount of patients that they see in order to explore other
methods of treatment. Doctor s incentives tend to be skewed towards offering treatment to patients,
rather than focusing on decreasing the big picture societal negative externality. Another example of an
externality on the healthcare system is that amplified antibiotic resistance increases medical costs, as
more expensive, potent antibiotics are required to combat stronger bacteria and infections.
In the United States, Pharmaceutical companies spend over $1 billion each year on direct to consumer
advertising for antibiotic prescriptions, shifting away from traditional advertisements for physicians in
medical journals, towards newspapers and consumer magazines. This marketing strategy has bolstered
consumer demand hugely and it poses a problem, as consumers are now heavily swayed by private
institutions who have their own incentive for maximizing profits.
In order to combat the issues discussed in this essay, a potential solution involves the implementation
of economic incentives for drug manufacturers, consumers and doctors, employed by policy

Legal Positivists And Natural Law
An unjust law cannot be a valid law In the light of Natural Law and Positivist theories, assess the
accuracy of the above statement. To what extent are legal positivists and natural law theorists accurate
in terms of the idea that an unjust law cannot be a valid law ? In this essay i will attempt to define the
concept of the validity of law in relation to both natural law theorists and positivist theorists. For the
purpose of this essay I will define validity of a law as Having legal force; effective or binding (The
Free Dictionary). The main reason for the continual debate between both theories is that they are both
very similar although they may appear to be at contrary ends of each spectrum. Natural law theorists
believe that in order for a law to be valid it must have some moral principle therefore if laws which
are enacted in statues have no authority, they are not moral. Whereas positivists support and
emphasise the importance of a division between morality and law. I will begin by outlining both
theories. I will then move onto asses the accuracy of the following statement, An unjust law cannot be
a valid law this includes establishing the similarities and differences of both theories; in order to do
this effectively it is essential that a thorough understanding of both theories has been developed.
Finally I will summarise my findings, An unjust law cannot be a valid law true or false? The first
question we need to address in order to be able to assess this

The Good Role Models For Young Athletes
Harsh coaching of young athletes can often steer kids away from sports altogether, but if the coaches
get it right, the kids learn important skills for their futures. At a young age, children need discipline in
order to put them in the right direction for their futures. This discipline is found in numerous forms,
and one of the most common forms is through sports. As David Brooks, author of the article
Organized Sports Can Benefit Children , says, The best coaches still live by a code, and they make no
apology for demanding that kids live up to it (Brooks). This code makes coaches respectable role
models for young athletes. Though coaching techniques are often critiqued, coaching should not be
regulated because most coaches give athletes a good role model to look up to, teach them discipline,
and help them learn to get along with others. Parents often have concerns for how coaches treat their
young athletes, but most coaches are the best character role models that a child will have. David
Brooks says, Coaches have become the leading moral instructors in America today. (Brooks). Groups
like The Positive Coaching Alliance exist solely to help coaches do their job of creating mature and
respectful athletes (Positive). Children need these positive role models in their lives because kids are
easily influenced, and good influencers are key. Even if a child great parents as role models, it is even
better to have one outside of the family. A coach can serve as someone that

visitations within Australia alone reached 3.9 million visitors within the first 7 months of 2014, which
was an increase of approximately 9.5%, a number which continues to rise (Tourism Australia, 2015).

Although scientists are not able to depict exactly when humans first came into contact with the reef,
evidential estimations state that the Great Barrier Reef was first formed approximately 500,000 years
ago, with the current reef state being formed about 6,000 to 8,000 years old.
Coral reefs exist all over the world and are generally known as being one of the most diverse, intricate
and beautiful of all existing marine habitats. They have many varying structures which are developed
by algae and are symbiotic with various reef building corals which are referred to as, zooxanthellae
(algae). There are many other factors such as, coralline algae, sponges and other various organisms
that are combined with a number of cementation processes which also contribute to reef growth,
(CORAL REEFS, 2015).
As can be seen in appendix 2, Lady Elliot Island is located, approximately 46 nautical miles north east
off the coast of Bundaberg and is accessed from the Hervey Bay airport. The island covers an
estimated area of approximately 45 hectares. Lady Elliot Island itself caters for approximately 150 day

Human Rights Violations In Saudi Arabia
Universal human rights are guaranteed to all humans, regardless of their gender, religion, ethnicity, or
background. They also apply to prisoners. Detailing human rights violations in Saudi Arabia, The
United States Department of State explains, The following significant human rights problems were
reported: no right to change the government peacefully; torture and physical abuse; poor prison and
detention center conditions; arbitrary arrest and incommunicado detention; denial of fair and public
trials and lack of due process in the judicial system; political prisoners; restrictions on civil liberties
such as freedoms of speech (including the internet), assembly, association, movement, and severe
restrictions on religious freedom; and corruption and lack of government transparency (United States).
Saudi Arabia is violent towards prisoners and speaking freely against the state is a punishable crime.
Therefore, the power of the individuals at the top of the vertical power structure have the threat of
violence as a weapon in ensuring absolute compliance by citizens.
In order to promote a peaceful global climate, global accountability from outside countries is
necessary to keep Saudi Arabia from infringing on the rights of individuals both within and outside
their borders. The overall sociopolitical ideology of Saudi Arabia, operating culturally under a
patriarchal system of absolute power, is dangerous to the fabric of humanity. Militant intervention into

All this makes it easier for them to keep their costs down and scale to meet changing customer
demands, but it also makes it harder to assess the risk to your organization from using such a service.
Organizations potentially can gain a competitive or cost advantage through selective adoption of cloud
computing, but not without first taking a comprehensive look at the associated risks, ensuring that they
are consistent with business goals, along with the expectations of regulators, auditors, shareholders
and partners. It is especially challenging to understand the risks associated with cloud computing, and
CIOs, chief information security officers, compliance and privacy officers, and line of business
managers should be involved in the risk assessment of new cloud based services. If a company is
considering the use of an external service of any sort, then it needs to: Assess the security, privacy and
regulatory compliance risks Identify use cases that are inappropriate for this service delivery method,
based on risk level and current controls Identify use cases that pose an acceptable level of risk for the
service delivery method Choose and implement compensating controls before going fully operational

Several sources have explained why these techniques should be used and of their effectiveness. More recently, a 2009 report was released by Association for Psychological Science, where learning techniques were analyzed and their effectiveness explained. Some of the techniques from this report will be mentioned, but the focus is more on how each that are presented relate to my own personal experience towards. The most preferred methods seem to relate more with my state of consciousness. When studying or preparing prior to a test, most definitely I will have consumed some form of caffeine. Although wishing to be well rested, my time management and lifestyle does not always allow for this luxury. While studying, the preference is to be within a specific environment, avoiding too many external distractions. • 3. Basic Legal Contract Principles For A Contract The above scenario is difficult to analyse due to there being no executed contract documentation to review such as a specification or terms and conditions to base a recommendation upon. Basic legal contract principles should therefore be applied to establish if a contract was in place, if it had been breached, along with potential remedies applied to each party. To identify if there was a breach of contract between John (the client) and Chris (the Contractor) it is key to establish if there was a legally binding contract in place. In order for a contract to be deemed legally binding , it must abide by three key elements which are offer, consideration and acceptance. The sum of £6,000 was offered for the service and subsequently agreed consideration completed by Chris whom accepted. With the capacity of both directors, including intent from both parties to carry out their promise, a contract was formed. As part of the contract negotiations £1,000 was paid in advance to Chris, without any identified agreed terms and conditions. Advanced payments in contracts such as these are typically used to purchase the materials required to undertake the work. It is to be assumed that the £1,000 advanced payment was used to purchase the paint required to carry out the works. The remaining £5,000 was due to Chris once the works were completed to a satisfactory level. When agreeing to the terms of the contract, John clearly sets a requirement of the works being satisfactory. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Lord of the Flies is based almost entirely on Golding s view that evil is an inherent force in every man, man produces evil as a bee produces honey . Golding acquired this belief while he was a soldier in the Second World War. From that point on, he became extremely pessimistic about human nature, calling it the disease of being human . This belief is shown very clearly, as he puts innocent children on a deserted island, free of all corruption; free of an external threat, therefore with no need of an army; abundant in food and supplies, therefore with no need to steal. Therefore, what evil was left could only come from the ... This gives rise to Karl Marx s argument that It is not the consciousness of men that determines their existence, but their social existence that determines their consciousness . This means that as both novels were produced by the socio political and economic circumstances, namely the Cold War, a dystopian era. The Marxist theory of Class Conflict also helps us understand the novel better. It could be argued that the groups that form on the island can be considered as classes . As the boys splinter into factions, some behave peacefully and work together to maintain order and achieve common goals, while others rebel and seek only anarchy and violence. It could be seen that Ralph and Piggy are the ruling class, the bourgeoisie, and Jack and his hunters are the working class, the proletariat. This is because Ralph clearly establishes his role as the chief, with an almost unanimous consent from the boys, which gives him the power to rule over them. Alternatively, it could be argued that Jack possesses the highest Class status on the island, due to his ownership of the choir, his hunters, he says to Ralph, See? They do what I want . A Critical Analysis Of Michael Vick s Article In previous research done by Kristi Grim she examined the coverage of Michael Vick, an African American quarterback accused of running a dog fighting ring, and Roethlisberger, a white NFL quarterback, who like Vick also had a bright football career and was accused of sexual assault (Grim, 2013). She performed a qualitative research analysis examining the dominant frame in each local newspaper, and how the journalist established the frame in the story. In her research she reviewed the Atlanta Journal Constitution (AJC) for stories on Michael Vick s dog fighting accusations, and the Pittsburgh Post Gazette (PPG) for stories involving Roethlisberger s rape accusations (Grim, 2013). The House of Seven Gables as a Gothic Novel Essay The House of Seven Gables as a Gothic Novel To be a paradigm of a Gothic novel, The House of Seven Gables needs to include many elements, all which center on the ideas of gloom, horror, and mystery. The mansion also adds its own flavor and variety to the atmosphere of mystery and suspense in the novel by providing a dark and gloomy setting where the story takes place. By including all the elements, which standardize the content and atmosphere of the novel in the The House of Seven Gables, Nathaniel Hawthorne develops an exemplary example of a Gothic piece of literature. To be considered a Gothic novel, The House of Seven Gables needs to first fulfill the requirements of the setting, including a once aristocratic run down mansion or castle with many secret doors, passages, and compartments. The elements in the setting produce effects in the development of the mysterious and gloomy atmosphere. In the early years of the Pyncheon family, Colonel Pyncheon steals the domicile and land of Mathew Maule out of greed and fulfillment of his superiority as an aristocrat. Colonel Pyncheon constructs the House of Seven Gables on Pyncheon Street, over the grave of the restless Mathew Maule, inheriting the curse of death within its walls. The anathema of death Mathew Maule sentences the residents House of Seven Gables to results in a scarcity of inhabitants, due to the fear for their lives, and therefore the house becomes extremely dark and lonesome to the later generations. The lack of denizens to upkeep the house results in the house itself showing the signs of the melancholy and gloom it contains, mirroring the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Therefore, doctors can be incentivised to undertake the simplest solution, rather than sacrifice the amount of patients that they see in order to explore other methods of treatment. Doctor s incentives tend to be skewed towards offering treatment to patients, rather than focusing on decreasing the big picture societal negative externality. Another example of an externality on the healthcare system is that amplified antibiotic resistance increases medical costs, as more expensive, potent antibiotics are required to combat stronger bacteria and infections. In the United States, Pharmaceutical companies spend over $1 billion each year on direct to consumer advertising for antibiotic prescriptions, shifting away from traditional advertisements for physicians in medical journals, towards newspapers and consumer magazines. This marketing strategy has bolstered consumer demand hugely and it poses a problem, as consumers are now heavily swayed by private institutions who have their own incentive for maximizing profits. In order to combat the issues discussed in this essay, a potential solution involves the implementation of economic incentives for drug manufacturers, consumers and doctors, employed by policy ... • 30. Legal Positivists And Natural Law An unjust law cannot be a valid law In the light of Natural Law and Positivist theories, assess the accuracy of the above statement. To what extent are legal positivists and natural law theorists accurate in terms of the idea that an unjust law cannot be a valid law ? In this essay i will attempt to define the concept of the validity of law in relation to both natural law theorists and positivist theorists. For the purpose of this essay I will define validity of a law as Having legal force; effective or binding (The Free Dictionary). The main reason for the continual debate between both theories is that they are both very similar although they may appear to be at contrary ends of each spectrum. Natural law theorists believe that in order for a law to be valid it must have some moral principle therefore if laws which are enacted in statues have no authority, they are not moral. Whereas positivists support and emphasise the importance of a division between morality and law. I will begin by outlining both theories. I will then move onto asses the accuracy of the following statement, An unjust law cannot be a valid law this includes establishing the similarities and differences of both theories; in order to do this effectively it is essential that a thorough understanding of both theories has been developed. Finally I will summarise my findings, An unjust law cannot be a valid law true or false? The first question we need to address in order to be able to assess this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 32. The Good Role Models For Young Athletes Harsh coaching of young athletes can often steer kids away from sports altogether, but if the coaches get it right, the kids learn important skills for their futures. At a young age, children need discipline in order to put them in the right direction for their futures. This discipline is found in numerous forms, and one of the most common forms is through sports. As David Brooks, author of the article Organized Sports Can Benefit Children , says, The best coaches still live by a code, and they make no apology for demanding that kids live up to it (Brooks). This code makes coaches respectable role models for young athletes. Though coaching techniques are often critiqued, coaching should not be regulated because most coaches give athletes a good role model to look up to, teach them discipline, and help them learn to get along with others. Parents often have concerns for how coaches treat their young athletes, but most coaches are the best character role models that a child will have. David Brooks says, Coaches have become the leading moral instructors in America today. (Brooks). Groups like The Positive Coaching Alliance exist solely to help coaches do their job of creating mature and respectful athletes (Positive). Children need these positive role models in their lives because kids are easily influenced, and good influencers are key. Even if a child great parents as role models, it is even better to have one outside of the family. A coach can serve as someone that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
