Islam Vs. Judaism
Dear best friend, I hope you are doing okay. I remember you had asked about the people of the
book, where you wanted to know more about everything regarding this book and the people. At the
moment, I am writing a letter that will explain the characters in the book and what they have in
common and the differences. After completing an extensive research, I noticed the Islamic religion
and community have their unique beliefs. One of the beliefs is that God had earlier made Himself
known to some previous prophets of both Christians and Jews such as Abraham, Jesus, and Moses.
Muslims consequently recognize and acknowledge the teachings of Christian Gospels and the
Jewish Torah. Even though they understand the teachings of these religions and others... Show more

The Causes And Effect Of Resistance On The Government...
This dissertation reviewing the results of research by academic writers on issues of resistance to
change, which occurred both in the public and private sectors. Significantly, special attention will
be given to writings that discuss the causes of the emergence of resistance to change. In this case,
the works of Anis Khassawneh, and Rosemond Boohene and Asamoah Appiah Williams will be
critically reviewed.
1. Anis Khassawneh
Khassawneh works considered relevant to the part of this study because it has been investigated and
identified the main causes of employee resistance to changes in government organisations in Jordan.
He discusssed the causes of resistance to change in developing countries. He cited the experience of

Meanwhile, Khassawneh (2015: 26 27) has conducted a research and found that there are four
factors that trigger the rejection of the employee to change in government organisations in Jordan.
There are due to the lack of participation of employees, inadequate incentives, distrust between
higher management and workers, and lack of clarity in the goals of change. He formulated these
results by selecting the top four answers of respondents.
The works of Khan (1989), Jreisat (1988), and Khassawneh (2005) carried out in different time
periods, which is about 17 years. Nevertheless, there are similarities research findings about the
reasons that led to the employee refuses to change, namely the lack of commitment of the
leadership in making changes. This work has provided insight into some of the research questions
on the causes of resistance, so it is considered relevant to this dissertation.
Moreover, the work of Khassawneh can be relied on. He is a former government employee. He also
is a lecturer in the training programs conducted by the Institute of Public Administration, so it is
already familiar with the change of administration in the public sector in Jordan. Although not
mentioned how long he was active in the field of study of bureaucratic reforms,

Essay On Gene Expression In Bacteria
In this experiment, I looked at what affect varying environmental variables have on gene
expression in bacteria. More specifically, I observed the effect of temperature on the common
soil bacteria Serratia marcescens. S. marcescens can appear either red, pink, white, or colorless
due to the presence, or the lack, of several specific enzymes within the bacteria that cause the
production of the red pigment known as prodigiosin. All organisms contain DNA, which houses
genes that contain information needed for the cell to produce a specific protein or enzyme
required to carry out a particular biochemical function or to fulfill a particular cellular process.
Certain factors, such as temperature, light, or pH, can cause certain genes to be... Show more

After mixing the two, I placed the mixture in a small test tube and placed that in the microwave to
bring it to a boil. After about 30 seconds in the microwave, I noticed that the test tube s rubber
stop, which was placed there to prevent the water from evaporating in the microwave, had
completely popped off. I cleaned up the mess in the microwave and made the nutrient agar mixture
again; however, this time I placed the mixture in a larger beaker and covered it with the top of a
sterile petri dish similarly to how I had previously boiled Mr. Goble s Erlenmeyer flask of agar.
Again, after 30 seconds in the microwave, the petri dish lid had come off of the beaker and the
mixture had boiled over and onto the microwave. I cleaned the microwave for the second time that
day and decided that I needed an even larger container to boil the mixture in, as it seemed the
boiling water had nowhere to go in my previous efforts and forced the ejection of each lid. After
realizing that the largest flask I was in possession of was the large Erlenmeyer from Mr. Goble, I
decided to clean it out quickly (as there was still some remaining nutrient agar in the bottom of it)
and make my own nutrient agar for the third time and use the large flask to boil it in. After the
third time, my efforts to boil my own nutrient agar proved successful and I poured about 15 mL of
the liquid agar into two petri dishes; one

Othello s Diverse Themes Essay
Othello s Diverse Themes
Othello is one of William Shakespeare s tragedies which thrives on a group of themes. Let s see if
we can sort them out and determine the dominant ones from the lesser ones.
The pain which the audience experiences is no accident, but rather one of the themes written into
the play. Critic Caroline Spurgeon in Shakespeare s Imagery and What it Tells Us explains the
significant contribution which imagery makes to the theme of pain and unpleasantness running
through the play:
The main image in Othello is that of animals in action, preying upon one another, mischievous,
lascivious, cruel or suffering, and through these, the general sense of pain and unpleasantness is
much increased ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Nor is this all. Such jealousy as Othello s converts human nature into chaos, and liberates the beast
in man; and it does this in relation to one of the most intense and also the most ideal of human
feelings. (169)
Of course, jealousy of a non sexual nature torments the antagonist, the ancient, to the point that he
ruins those around him and himself. Francis Ferguson in Two Worldviews Echo Each Other
describes:
On the contrary, in the world of his philosophy and his imagination, where his spirit lives, there
is no cure for passion. He is, behind his mask, as restless as a cage of those cruel and lustful
monkeys that he mentions so often. It has been pointed out that he has no intelligible plan for
destroying Othello, and he never asks himself what good it will do him to ruin so many people. It
is enough for him that he hates the Moor. . . .(133)
Act 1 Scene 1 opens with an expression of jealousy and hatred: Roderigo is upbraiding Iago
because of the elopement of the object of his affections Desdemona with the Moor: Thou told st
me thou didst hold him in thy hate. Iago responds with an expression of hatred, saying that he
does indeed hate the general because he Nonsuits my mediators; for, Certes, says he, / I have
already chose my officer. Lily B. Campbell in Shakespeare s Tragic Heroes indicates the palpable
hatred:

Colonialism In Australia
Introduction Colonialism is defined as the practice of domination, which involves control of one
person to another (Plato.stanford.edu, 2018). This usually involves the settlement of citizens from
colonial power in the colony. Indigenous Australians have been marginalised by settler colonial
Australians, results of this has impacted the way Indigenous Australians are viewed and treated in
contemporary society. Indigenous people have struggled to regain their rights such as reclaiming
their identities that were misappropriate by the presence of colonials (Maddison, 2013).
Structural violence of settler colonialism continues to dominate the Indigenous population in
contemporary Australia. In many ways settler colonials continue to dominate ... Show more content

Terra Nullius is an example of how settler colonialism tried to take ownership of Australian land.
Terra Nullius is a Latin word that means land belonging to no one (Craven and Parbury, 1999).
Captain James Cook claimed Australia and declared that Australia seems to have no fixed habitation
but instead habitants of the land, move around from place to place like wild beasts in search of
food (Craven and Parbury, 1999). The British settlement and takeover of Australia affected, attitudes
and treatment of Indigenous. Terra Nullius denied the humanity and existence of Indigenous
Australians and can be considered the cause of most racism towards Indigenous Australia. This has
led to the White Australia Act, which depended on the non existence of Indigenous and also the
racialisation of Indigenous Australians. The Indigenous population in Australia became subject to
racialised identity categories based on their degrees of blood, labelling and classifying people as
full blood, half cast (Maddison, 2013). This policy led to removing Indigenous children from their
families and communities. This policy was enforced with the intention to erase the Indigenous
population, by blending them into invisibility within the colonial population (Maddison, 2013).
However, in 2008, the federal parliament gave an apology to the stolen generation (The
Conversation, 2018). This comes after many years of

Japanese Naval Colossal
Have you ever thought about the reason for the defeat of the Imperialistic Japanese Naval
Colossal? The Japanese lost many aircraft carriers, military personnel, and aircraft turning the tide
in the Pacific Theater. From December, 1941, until the spring of 1942, Japanese forces conquered
British, Dutch, and U.S. possessions in East Asia and the Pacific Ocean (Watson). The Japanese
fast and powerful ships helped them extend their dominance. United Statessteps in when the
Japanese invaded French Indochina, present Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, and issued an oil
embargo on the Japanese. This angered the Japanese, So they planned to take over the oil wells
in United States. They did this by a surprise attack over the Hawaiian naval base of Pearl Harbor
because 60% of the US navy fleet was stationed there. The United States declared war over Japan.

It crushed the naval dominance of the Japanese Navy. The United States Navy was now able to
produce more ships and aircrafts. The Japanese lost their four largest aircraft carriers,as well as 275
planes and about 3,000 military personnel (Watson). The United States, by contrast, lost only one
carrier (the Yorktown), one destroyer, 150 planes, and 307 personnel (Watson). Japanese morale
and their dominance was crushed by this battle.
There were many heroes fought in this battle. Chester W Nimitz was the commander of the United
States fleet. Japanese Pacific fleet commander of the battle was Chuichi Nagumo. Isoroku
Yamamoto planned and assembled the attack and also was the commander of the Imperial Japanese
Navy.
Battle of Midway was the turning point in the war. This destroyed most of the aircraft carriers
and many of their ships. This battle keeps them on the run. If Battle of Midway was a victory for
the Japanese, then the allies would lose the war and we would be under the control of Fascist
dictators and lose many of our birth

Philosophy of Nursing Practice Essay
Compassion and Caring: My Philosophy of Nursing Practice In nursing, it is important to have a
personal philosophy of the profession. It dictates how a person deals with the day to day tasks and
obstacles that nurses will face. Patient populations are ever changing, with some much sicker than
others, and various lengths of stay expected. The nurse will encounter different cultures and beliefs
in their practice, some contrary to their own. Their philosophy of nursing will be evident with how
they handle the various aspects of the job. One thing that all patients have in common is that they
are in a vulnerable situation. They are in the hospital, many confined to their room or bed. Some
have family with them. Others must face their... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I knew that I did not want to be like that, but that I wanted to take care of sick people and be there
for them. I wanted to be the nurse that was able to have a conversation with her patients and still
manage to keep them healthy.
Essence of Nursing The core of nursing is and should be knowledgeable patient care. The nurse
should be well rounded and possess enough knowledge to know not only the technical aspect of
patient care, but also how to tend to the patients emotional needs. Kagan, Smith, Cowling Chinn
(2009) say It can be argued that the overemphasized focus on technological and medical
interventions rather than on services underpinned by caring practices and humanist nursing
values puts the health of all humans at risk (p. 75). While medical interventions are necessary,
the nurse is responsible for carrying out those interventions in a humane and caring way. If the
focus is on the technical side of nursing, the patient as a person is easily forgotten. I believe that
to truly care for a patient, the nurse must act as a patient advocate. In more recent times, the
nurses role as a patient advocate is expanding and becoming more widely recognized. Influential
authors have shown that nurse s role is to speak up for a patient when they are not able to speak
up for themselves. Ann Hamric (as cited in Mahlin 2010, p. 248) says that a nurse s

Alabama V. Jaffree ( 1985 )
Wallace, Governor of Alabama v. Jaffree (1985): Central Question: Does the Alabama statute 16
1 20.1, allowing a period of silence for meditation or voluntary prayer violate the First
Amendment Establishment Clause that is applied to the states by the Fourteenth Amendment?
Facts of the Case: The case of Wallace v. Jaffree calls into question the constitutionality of an
Alabama statute that authorized teachers to lead a one minute period of silence for meditation
or voluntary prayer in all public schools. Ishmael Jaffree, the parent of three students in the
Mobile County Public School system filed a complaint that two of his three children had been
subjected to various acts of religious indoctrination, as a result of Alabama statute 16 1 20.1 and
asked for an injunction prohibiting Mobile County schools from maintaining or allowing the
maintenance of regular religious prayer services. The purpose of Jaffree s complaint was to
prohibit the devotional services occurring in his children s school and the consequent mockery
of his children that occurred when they refused to recite the prayers to Almighty God (Stevens,
40). This type of law in Alabama public schools was not the first of its kind. Prior to statute 6 11
20.1, Alabama passed law 16 1 20 authorizing one minute of silence in public schools for
meditation. After the authorization of statute 16 1 20.1 came 16 1 20.2, which allowed teachers to
lead willing students in a prayer (Stevens, 40). Opinion of the

Racial Inequality In Brazil
Towards the end of the 19th century, immigration to Brazil began to rapidly increase. The demand
for coffee continued to increase, and the coffee production industry expanded due to an influx in
immigrants from Japan, Portugal, Spain, Italy, as well as several other European countries. Brazil
was a divided nation, lacking a unified population or shared culture. The goal of allowing an influx
of European immigrants into the country was to conform to European culture, and civilize Brazil.
Essentially, Brazil had desires to whiten the population. The largely black, and Mulatto population
quickly began to transform into predominantly white. Racial inequality and discrimination marked
Brazil, and created distinct divisions amongst the population. Following abolition, Afro Brazilians
had immense difficulty in defining their own place in Brazilian society. Prior to the 1980s, racist
attitudes as well the intention of Westernizing Brazil, made it challenging for Afro Brazilians to
achieve economic or social mobility. Beginning in the 20th century, efforts to diminish racial
inequality became increasingly necessary to Brazil. Afro Brazilians have faced severe inequity
post abolition, however in recent decades the eradication of racial inequality has become
imperative. Scientific racism emerged in Brazil from France, and was rooted from the philosophy
positivism. Positivism was an ideology that declared any rational observation or idea can be
scientifically, logically, or

Courtroom Analysis
When someone steps into the courtroom it requires that person to change how they act, to
change how they present themselves, and to change who they are. When I stepped into the
courtroom at the National Judicial Competition my whole world changed. However, it didn t
happen all at once. The process began months before I arrived in Chicago. It started the day I
accepted the invitation from the state office. That day the little boy inside of me began to fade.
A boy stepped off the bus and methodically picked a path around puddles on his way home. He
bounded up the front steps, grabbed a handful of letters, and pushed open the door. It wasn t until
he tossed the letters onto the counter that he saw the powder blue envelope with his name on it.
He tore open the sealed flap and pulled out a simple, understated letter. He read it once, then again
to make sure it was really addressed to him. Immediately the excitement and the anxiety of being
accepted swirled in his head. He knew this would eclipse anything he had done before. Standing
there next to the counter he decided he would go. Without knowing it, making that decision slowly
began to shape him from the inside. It started invisible transformation that ended up defining who

Summary Of Blink By Malcolm Gladwell Blink
In Chapter 2 of Blink by Malcolm Gladwell, Gladwell insist that what we think of as freewill is
largely an illusion: much of the time, we are simply operating on automatic pilot, and the way
we think and act and how we think and act on the spur of the moment are a lot more susceptible
to outside influences than we realize. (58). Gladwell is referring to priming, as human beings,
our behavior and decision making are often influenced by subtle triggers we are either aware of
or not aware of. As humans we are vulnerable to the most subtle stimuli. Gladwell provides
examples of priming with different types of exams and games administered to college students.
An area where priming occurs on a daily occurrence is at the grocery store because the products
sold are strategically placed on the shelves to target a specific audience company s want to sell
their product to, the price tag are designed with colors that we associates subconsciously with
spending, and there are signs located all around the store that tell you that you ll be saving
money so that you buy more of that certain product or so you are more likely to shop at that
particular store. Priming is when subtle triggers we are either aware of or not aware of
influence our behavior. Gladwell has the reader imagine that he is a professor proctoring a
scrambled sentence test where students were asked to walk down a long hallway into an exam
room where they were given an exam with a list of five word sets and asked to change each
word set into a grammatically four word sentence as fast as possible. The test was not difficult
but the college students walked down the hallway more slowly than they walked towards the
classroom. This is because ingrained in the list were certain words that were associated with
being old. This test, which was developed by a clever psychologist named John Bargh, makes our
adaptive unconsciousness ponder about the state of being old. Further research suggests that
individuals can be primed to behave differently, various words may be used to influence people to
be polite or rude. Malcolm Gladwell demonstrates how a simple scramble sentence test challenges
your sub consciousness into believing that you are much older by simply

This extract from Book 6 of Homer s The Iliad comes at a point where the Trojans are heavily
losing to the Achaeans. HГ©lenus, son of Priam has instructed Hector to return to the city to gather
the elders to tell them to offer prayers to the gods so that goddess Athena may pity Troy. It is
interesting that Homer should choose Hectorto deliver this message rather than an unimportant
character; Homer uses it as a devise to develop Hector and make him a more (if not the most)
sympathetic character. He shows his contrasting sides; his family oriented side as opposed to the
cruel warrior. The interaction with his child, Astyanax, brings a moment of tenderness and

Not Being Earnest in The Importance of Being Earnest
While some critics contend that The Importance of Being Earnest is completely fanciful and has
no relation to the real world, others maintain that Oscar Wilde s trivial comedy for serious people
does make significant comments about social class and the institution of marriage. These
observations include the prevalent utilization of deceit in everyday affairs. Indeed the characters
and plot of the play appear to be entirely irreverent, thus lending weight to the comedic, fanciful
aspect. However, this same factor also serves to illuminate the major points that Wilde tries to
convey about the English society in which he lived. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Wilde s conception of deceit as an accepted custom in English aristocracy is also existent in this
scene. The practice of Bunburying is established, an act where each man lies to his family about an
imaginary invalid friend present somewhere else, in an attempt to pursue leisure activities
elsewhere. It is in this discussion that Jack admits to his friend Algernon that he has been lying to
his friend in order to maintain the disguise. Thus, it seems as though the very relationship between
the two men is founded on deceit. Later in this act, Lady Bracknell and Gwendolyn are introduced.
Even though Lady Bracknell is married, it is obvious that the two women are merely female
counterparts of Algy and Jack. Both spend the day making visits to others in their social sphere, as
Algy and Jack do, holding these visits with utmost importance.
It is at this point, also, that the reader is presented with Wilde s views of marriage practices. Earlier
in the scene, when Ernest(Jack) announces his intention of proposing to Gwendolyn, Algernon does
not congratulate him, rather he denounces the entire institution. At Ernest s announcement of the
proposal, Algy exclaims, I thought you had come up for pleasure? I call that business . Later, Algy
s comments support the idea of adultery once one is married. When Ernest finally does propose to
Gwendolyn, he first must proceed through established flirting rituals

Food Preservatives And Its Effects On Food
Food Preservatives Food preservatives are described as natural means or man made chemicals
that are used in foods to prevent them from spoiling. A subgroup of preservatives are food
additives, which differ from preservatives in the way that additives are not only used to lengthen
the life of food, but also to improve taste and appearance. The ultimate goal of preservatives and
additives are to improve the quality and lifespan of food by slowing down the decomposition
process using chemicals or natural methods, such as salt and dehydration. Food preservatives
can be broken down into two basic groups natural and chemical. Natural preservatives are
methods such as sun drying, freezing, or adding other ingredients like honey that essentially
slow down the speed at which food spoils. Chemical preservatives are chemicals added to foods

Oedipus The King Vs Medea
Now as we keep our watch and wait the final day, count no man happy till he dies, free of pain at
last (Sophocles 134). This particular quote encompasses the idea of Oedipus The King written by
Sophocles, a play that tells the story of the new reigning king of Thebes. Through fate, Oedipus
met his end by blinding himself all due to the fact that he would not let go of the past. This
quote also applies to Medea by Euripides, a play about a woman named Medea, who is driven to
kill her kids because of a betrayal of her husband, Jason. The main similarities between these two
plays are that they are both based on Greek Mythology, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I find that there is an equal amount of similarities and differences within the text of the play.
Starting with Oedipus, we see that he is a very sympathetic leader who always wants to provide
a personal connection with that of his community. He is fighting so hard to remove the plague
that is stricken over his city of Thebes. This specifically tells us about what type of character
Oedipus is as a person and not only that but we see him portrayed as a victim of fate throughout
the entire play. Main reason for that is because he was bound by the ankles as a child. Some
examples that support Oedipus kind moral are as follows, But we do rate you first of men, both
in the common crises of our lives and face to face encounters with the gods...We taught you
nothing, no skill, no extra knowledge, still you triumphed... and Speak out, speak to us all. I
grieve for these, my people, far more than I fear for my own life (Sophocles 94 96). These quotes
show how respected Oedipus is within his community and that he can relate to them on a personal
and spiritual level and not just governmental. Truly fate is what caused Oedipus to fall greatly but
it does not lesson his character at all because he accepts punishment by blinding

Film Industry Analysis Paper
The movie making industry remains a vital part of popular culture and still has a large amount of
investors and buyers. Buyers, tend to be large cinemas or retail chains to small independent
cinemas or shops. The suppliers to the movie industry are the ones that help deliver the crew and
equipment, as well as the actors, directors and writers.
Buyer power:
In the United States, like some other countries, companies can legally operate in both the
production and distribution areas. An example of this is Walt Disney Company, they produce
motion pictures (including Marvel, Pixar and Lucas film brands) distributes DVDs to retailers and
also sell through Disney stores, as well as being a part owner of the online streaming service,
Hulu (www.marketline.com). Buyers in this market range in size, but the large buyers have
higher negotiation power. Producers of big budget films such as the loss making The Lone
Ranger (2013), which had a production budget of around $225m and a $150m marketing budget,
are clearly reliant on strong box office sales to break ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Some of these companies are Apple, Netflix, Amazon and so many others like these. Some of the
companies that create films like Disney have simply created an online service called Hulu, which I
mentioned earlier. One of the most concerning threats are illegal downloading, better known as
piracy. This affects greatly the companies in the movie industry because not only people can see
the movies the company are producing it but for free and not giving any income to the company.
For this reason it had become crime to which there are big consequences if you were to get caught
(International journal of arts management). Since these laws have been enforced it has had little
effect on the companies revenue, like the example of Paranormal Activities. Therefore, threat of
substitutes is evaluated as moderate

Vada Sultenfuss In My Girl
The movie I have chosen to explore is My Girl. The main character, Vada Sultenfuss, is an 11
year old girl experiencing middle childhood with her best friend, Thomas J (Zieff, 1991). This
paper will cover the following points, identity and self esteem, gender roles and sexuality, and
dealing with death in middle childhood.
Identity and self esteem
According to Erik Erikson s eight stages of grief, the main character is in stage four, industry versus
inferiority. Between the ages of five and twelve, industry versus inferiority occurs. During this
time if the child cannot develop a specific skill he/she feels society is demanding then the
probability of experiencing feelings of inferiority is highly likely (Sigelman and Rider, 2015).

Loved ones will experience these five stages after a death. The five stages are denial, anger,
bargaining, depression, and acceptance. There is not a set amount of time for any stage, a stage
may be skipped or repeated, and a person may stay suspended in one stage (Sigelman and Rider,
2015). Vada experiences death twice during the movie, with her mother and her best friend.
Vada s mother died from complications of giving birth to Vada. Vada is stuck in the stage of
depression because she believes she is at fault for her mother s death. Through the first half of
the movie, Vada is so sure she is dying that she has become a hypochondriac. She takes herself to
the doctor to let him know she is dying. She lays on the floor writhing in false pain and dying.
Vada feels so guilty about causing her mother s death, that she feels she needs to be punished. The
ultimate punishment for Vada would be her own death. The expression of her feelings and her
father s willingness to listen and explain might have propelled Vada through the stages and on to

Women s Soccer Vs Usmnet
Comparing the U.S. women s national team(USWNT) to the U.S. men s national team
(USMNT) seems pretty easy. They play the same game but against different genders. One thing
people do not realize is how large the pay gap is. Even though they are playing the same game,
the USWNT players receives $3650 less than the USMNT earns for a loss. These numbers never
balance out, and they should. Women s soccer is gaining popularity, and the USWNT does a better
job at representing US soccer in terms of tournaments and wins. Although they play the same game
for the same team, there is little equality between the USWNT and the USMNT.

The Four Types Of Organizational Cultures
An organizational culture is a system of shared beliefs and values that are establised to help
motivate and coordinate employees in the achievement of meeting the organization s goals
(Kinicki, 2012, p.229). The four types of organizational cultures are: clan, adhocracy, market, and
hierarchy. By a company choosing what kind of culture and structure they will plan lays out the
design of how an organization will function which gives an the organizational identity, it facilitates
collective commitment, promotes stability, and shapes the workplace behavior by helping
employees to understand the purpose and goals of the company, and how they intend to accomplish
their goals (Kinicki, 2012). In creating an organizational culture, I am doing so, based on the clan
culture because I feel that an organization can thrive in all aspects when employees are in an
environment that gives the sense of family, which in my opinion, also promotes cohesiveness
(Rouse, 2014). With this, I am am employee focused and prepared to mentor employer commitment,
by ensuring that my employees receive the necessary information when dealing with human
resources, benefits, etc., and employee engagement, by making sure that the team members are
well equipped with whatever is needed to carry out job duties and also to give the the opportunity
to work on a level that allows them to conduct assignments efficiently while making sound
decisions. This will allow the team members to collaborate and have input in

Communism In America
In the words of Abraham Lincoln, Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for
themselves. Freedom has been a topic of many meetings of Congress over the past few centuries,
as it is one of the main American ideals that formed our great nation. However, in the last seventy
years, there have been many attacks upon the American people that instill fear in the hearts of
many. Fear in a large group of people leads to rash decisions that could eventually precipitate the
loss of the common man s freedom. Losing freedom due to fear shies away from all of the
traditional American ideals of our forefathers, one of which was opportunity and freedom of the
common man. In the late 1940s and the early 1950s, United Statescitizens were left in tumult when
they caught wind of the impending shadow of communism. This was the Red Scare, a period of

Ways Women Get Pregnant
There are many ways for a woman to get pregnant but the most common way is were the sperm
makes a journey between the bodies of a man and woman during unprotected sexual intercourse.
The sperm s journey starts at the testicles, which start producing sperm at the start of puberty. When
a man ejaculates during sexual intercourse around 250 million spermcells that are stored in the
testicles get pushed through the tube, vas deferens and then are mixed with fluids from the the
prostate gland and seminal vesicle. Then all of the combined fluids pass the males urethra and then
enter the female reproductive system in hopes of impregnating the female.
From there the sperm cells travel through the cervical canal into the uterine cavity and then into

The Problem Of Complacency Is Really One Of The Major...
Complacency is definitely one of the major reasons realistic training has suffered over the last
few years. Multiple deployments, sometimes to the same area of operations, has fostered a laid
back approach to unit s road to war training. Even rotations to the Joint Readiness Training Center
(JRTC) incorporated similar scenarios that don t require too much complex thinking on behalf of
the unit. In the last year JRTC has started focusing more on the DATE scenario in preparation for
future conflicts. Units need to develop a training program to fill the gap between RL progression
and deployments or CTC rotations.

Realistic training should start by researching the enemy we will be facing. Once the capabilities of
your enemy has been defined, planning on how to successfully defeat their technology can be
accomplished. Once a plan is developed units can begin conducting collective training starting with

Divisions usually conduct a culminating training event every year, communicating your training
objectives to the ground unit can help to build your unit s proficiency.
Week 5 Discussion Board: Tactics Discuss the importance of realistic tactics training
In the Army we say train as you fight , this concept has been a building block for all soldiers to

the same theater has brought about a sense of complacency in the ranks. As the focus of the Army
is shifting towards a hybrid threat and we will inevitably be facing a more complex skilled enemy
with far better equipment, our approach to training needs to be re thought.

For centuries there have seen casualties of war; soldiers who have had various physical injuries
and scars that last a lifetime. Yet until the 20th century little was known about the emotional effects
of war on soldiers and it wasn t until soldiers were studied psychologically that the public began to
understand what had happened to them. One of the many things that the public began to
understand was that any returning veteran came back with disorders, including post traumatic

PTSD and shell shock are essentially manifestations of the brain s attempts to cope with trauma
and failing to do so adequately. With PTSD in soldiers, the sufferer will often recall and re
experience the specific trauma of war, perhaps when they dream, or even when they think or
close their eyes (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). Hallucinations are not uncommon either, with
soldiers feeling as if they are back in the traumatic war environment during sleep, when drunk or
on drugs and even during normal wakefulness. They will also react strongly to anything that
reminds them of the trauma and begin to avoid anything they associate with it (Post Traumatic
Stress Disorder). This often means a distinct reluctance to mix socially, due to loud noises that
remind them of bombings, or crowds of people reminiscent of trenches. In a recent Rand study
found that 1 in 5 veterans deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan suffered from PTSD (PBS). These
rates are somewhat similar to those reported in other scientific studies. With Shell shock is a

economic development of the country as well as increasing the quality of life of her populace. The
productivity and incomes of the rural people, or more specifically the agriculture sector, the

Comparing Plato s Republic And Aeneid
The model society is one that opens its arms to everyone and values unity and equality among its
members. Unlike the societies depicted in Plato s Republic and Virgil s Aeneid, which favor the
values of wisdom, courage, temperance, and justice, the model society aligns itself with the values
of forgiveness, kindness, attentiveness, and innocence. These values are extolled in the Gospel of
Luke, The Acts of Paul and Thecla, and The Martyrdom of Perpetua and Felicitas. As with the
Kingdom of God, the model human society overcomes alienation and separation of peoples by
putting an emphasis on welcoming and forgiving everyone including the weak and the lost and
showing kindness to all. In the Parable of the Good Samaritan, kindness is highlighted... Show more

In Plato s Republic, this is especially true, as Plato writes of Socrates s claim that only
philosophers are fit to lead the society because they are superior in knowledge and virtue. As
Glaucon explains, It would be absurd to choose anyone but philosophers [...] For the very area in
which they are superior [knowledge and virtue] is just about the greatest one (Republic 6.7 9).
This system that Plato outlines is based on the virtues of wisdom, courage, temperance, and
justice. Proponents of Plato s Republic would not favor the model society because they would
see it as weak, unstructured, and ungovernable. In their minds wisdom, courage, temperance,
and justice are necessary for a society to succeed, whereas forgiveness, kindness, and
attentiveness to others are illogical. They would argue that if everyone is equal, there would be
no one to lead or teach the rest of society. Although this idea for a society was developed by a
highly credited philosopher, it is flawed because it devalues unity among its members. If a society
holds some of its members in higher regard than others, it diminishes the value of welcoming all
peoples and allowing them to come together as one unified body, because it now sets its basis on
the preferential treatment of some over others. Despite the positive virtues that the Republic
presents, it is an exclusionary society, as it bans and marginalizes its members for being different or

The Dilemmas Of Public Education And Public School...
The greatly discussed dilemma of having a child be taught in a public school setting versus a
homeschool setting has been evaluated by parents since the idea was first introduced in the 1970 s.
Public schooling had been the standard method of teaching since it is a requirement for states to
provide public, free educationfor children in grades K 12. However, the backlash against the system
began when two educational theorists and supporters of schoolreform, John Holt and Raymond
Moore, started to question both the techniques and the products of public schools. Some parents
went on to support the ideas of them and began to teach their children in the environment of their
own homes for several different reasons. Some included moral or religious reasons, a desire for
high educational achievement, dissatisfaction with public schools instructional program, or
concerns about drugs and peer pressure in a public school environment. Child development
specialists believe that homeschooled children are isolated from the outside world, therefore
making them socially handicapped. If being exposed to this type of education on an elementary
school level, the child can suffer from the lack of fundamental development of effective social
skills needed for a lifetime ahead of them.
It is believed that by restricting children from the real world and its many problems through home
schooling, they may never get the chance to learn both life lessons and social interaction skills on

Thomas Hobbes And John Locke
By the second half of the 17th Century, England would experience one of the bloodiest conflicts in
its history, ultimately serving to influence some of the most phenomenal political philosophers in
Europe Thomas Hobbes, and John Locke. England was in constant unrest, choosing new forms of
government almost on a whim in desperate attempts to restore order in the Country. The English
Civil War in 1642 etched a legacy of dread in the people of England, and the war only appeared
more disastrous and fruitless when it became apparent the new Puritanical regime was just as
irresponsible as the previous regime by Charles I and his predecessor James I. Therefore, when the
Glorious Revolution arrived in 1588, England was relieved that the Governmentwas finally adapting
to advocate the toleration and the security of civil liberties on a grander scale. No longer would
rulers attempt to mimic the authority of Louis XIV and other absolute monarchs. However, without
the historical events that had occurred in England, it is unclear whether England s present form of
government nor any Republic thereafter would be the same because the historical events which
influenced the political philosophies of Thomas Hobbes and John Locke were derived mainly from
a combination of elements from the English Civil War, The Leveller Movement, The Puritanical
Dictatorship, or Louis XIV s reign.

Recent work on follow the perturbed leader (FTPL) algorithms for adversarial multi armed bandit

Assuming that the hazard rate is bounded allows one to provide regret analyses for a variety of
FTPL algorithms for the multi armed bandit problem. This paper pushes the inquiry into regret
bounds for FTPL algorithms beyond the bounded hazard rate condition. There are good reasons to
do so: natural distributions such as the uniform and Gaussian violate the condition. We give regret

The former corresponds to infimal convolution smoothing and the latter corresponds to stochastic
(or integral convolution) smoothing (Abernethy et al., 2014). Having a generic framework for
understanding perturbations allows one to study a wide variety of online linear optimization games
and a number of interesting perturbations.
There has also been some work on understanding perturbation approaches in bandit problems.
Kujala and Elomaa (2005) and Poland (2005) both showed that using the exponential (actually
double exponential/Laplace) distribution in an FTPL algorithm coupled with standard unbiased
estimation techniques yields near optimal O(NT logN) regret in T rounds with N arms. Unbiased
estimation needs access to arm probabilities that are not explicitly available when using an FTPL
algorithm. Neu and BartВґok (2013) introduced the geometric resampling scheme to approximate
these probabilities while still guaranteeing low regret. Recently, Abernethy et al. (2015) analyzed
FTPL for adversarial multi armed bandits and provided regret bounds under the condition that the
hazard rate of the perturbation distribution is bounded. This condition allowed them to consider a
variety of perturbation distributions beyond the exponential, such as gamma, Gumbel, Frechet,
Pareto, and Weibull.
Unfortunately, the bounded hazard rate condition is violated by two of the most widely known
distributions: namely the uniform1 and the Gaussian distributions. As a result, the

normal functioning of the kidneys, leading to enlarged kidney(McPhee et al., 2014). When the
enlarged kidney stops properly functioning leading kidney failure. It may take years before the
kidneys totally loose function and then require dialysis, which is in only about half of the patients
diagnosed with PKD. According to National Kidney and Urologic Diseases Information Clearing
House (NKUDIC)(2007), mutations in genes PKD1, PKD2 and PKHD1 cause polycystic kidney
disease. Defects in the formation of epithelial cells and their cilium result in cyst formation and
obstruction that is followed by destruction of renal parenchyma, interstitial fibrosis, and loss of
functional nephrons (McCance, Heuther, Brasher, 2014). The renal, gastrointestinal, cardiovascular
and cerebrovascular organs are the most common systems affected by PKD (McPhee et al., 2014).
There are two major inherited forms of PKD. One is autosomal dominant PKD and the other is
autosomal recessive PKD. According to National Human Genomic Research Institute (2013),
autosomal dominant is the most common form of inheritance. To

The Destruction Of Dignity By Dave Eggers

The Destruction of Dignity
Acclaimed writer , Dave Eggers, in his riveting novel Zeitoun retells the story of a New Orleans
painter as he finds himself in the city following Hurricane Katrina. Throughout his harrowing
journey throughout the aftermath, Eggers exhibits the horrifying results a disaster can have on the
dignity of victims. There are countless examples throughout the novel of those who have been
dispossessed of their dignity and humanity, and there is no better example than that of Zeitoun
himself. Egger s portrayal of the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina demonstrates the devastating effect
a disaster has on the dignity of individuals and how it can strip the ... Show more content on

It defied belief. (Eggers, 101) The disregard of Zeitoun s pleas by those on the boats forms
almost an exact parallel of the parable of the Samaritan in the Bible and highlights the lack of
humanity shown by the soldiers on the boat. The parable describes the story of an injured man
beaten by robbers on the side of the road. Two men, a priest and a levite, pass down the road and
avoid him, while a third man, a Samaritan helps the man recover. The priest and the levite both
had a moral obligation and were duty bound to assist the injured man, yet chose not to, and this
is the exact situation the soldiers and police officers in the boat were in. They too had a moral
obligation and were duty bound to help assist the residents of New Orleans following the
hurricane. Eggers also emphasizes their position of authority by appealing to logos, as he
describes their boats as, a military model, loud, with a great fan anchored perpendicularly to the
rear. It was headed directly towards them. (Eggers 100 101). By describing the crafts as something
specific to the military, Eggers indirectly points out their duty to help the people due to their
possession of vehicles capable of saving many lives. Unfortunately, despite having both the means
and the duty to assist Zeitoun, all of the military personnel choose to ignore Zeitoun, This utter
neglect of their duty indicates their decline in humanity as they choose to ignore someone who

Comparing The Novel Out, Out And Disabled
Compare the ways in which the writers create sympathy in Out, Out and Disabled
In the poems, Robert Frost and Wilfred Owen both create sympathy for the characters through
different ways. In Disabled , Owen paints a vivid, moving picture of a soldier who has been
injured in World War One and lost his legs and an arm. Wilfred Owen himself took part in the
war, consequently witnessing first hand many young men whose lives were similarly destroyed.
In the poem, Out, Out , Robert Frost shows the fragility of life in two ways. Firstly alluding to
Shakespeare s metaphor in Macbeth s soliloquy Out, out, brief candle , which informs the reader
that life is very short and fragile. Moreover, Frost looks at the themes of sudden death and child
labour to help to make this a very sad and shocking poem. The poem reflects the tragedy of the
accidental death of a child doing a man s job. Frost s description of setting, imagery, and tone create
a moving poem with a horrifying ending that leaves the reader feeling despaired at the bleakness of
the situation and quite shocked.
Even in the structure of the poem, Wilfred Owen shows us a compassionate portrait of loss by
switching between and comparing the soldier s experiences before and after war time, and the
related memories and emotions, for instance:
And girls glanced lovelier as the air grew dim
In old times, before he threw away his knees .
This example shows the constant comparison and reminder of the soldier s loss

Taro In Hawaii Culture
Growing up in Hawaii I knew that taro, also known as Colocasia esculenta, was something that
the state grew and loved. The Hawaiian word for taro is kalo. Not only is taro, or kalo, a part of
the Hawaiian culture, but it is their native diet as well. It is very popular that schools would go on
field trips to taro patches, but it is common that people would never really realize how important it
actually was. As Donna Haraway explained in The Companion Species Manifesto , a companion
specie is something that must include relationships with plants, insects, intestinal flora, etc., that all
make life what it is for humans (15). When talking about companion species, there cannot just be
one companion specie, there have to be at least two ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Because of this taro is one of the very few plants that can still live and grow under flooded
conditions. The plant takes almost a year to mature. Farmers understood that because it takes so
long to grow, they would use the plan wisely and take only what they had needed. There was a
certain way to prep the ground before planting taro. The ground had to be wet but still solid
enough for the plant. In order to prep the land, women, children, and men would step and pound
on the ground, which applies pressure to the dirt to make it more dense and packed. When the
taro was ready to be eaten it would be pulled out of the ground then prepped by being washed then
cooked. Although Taro could be planted in dry lands as well, it would be planted in areas that still
had lots of forest

Perception Vs. Reality By John Green
Paper Towns: Perception vs. Reality The book Paper Towns by John Green is a story about
going past the imagination to actually know somebody. Quentin, who is convinced he is in love
with the wild and adventurous Margo, goes on a journey to find her when she ran away. Through
this journey, he finds a new Margo, the real Margo. Instead of imagining the Margo of his dreams,
who is perfect and daring, he sees a different side, like looking through a fun house mirror. Using
the theme of perceptions vs. reality, John Greenshows readers through Quentin that you have to dig
deeper in order to know and understand someone.
Margo s peers think of Margo as this beautiful, free spirited girl, but they do not really know who
she is inside. When ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ben even pays attention to how Margo is and how she acts. He recognizes how adventurous and
awesome she is without even really knowing her. He is using stories to assume the way is or the
way she acts, even to the extent of predicting her future.
At first, Quentin has trouble seeing Margo past her outer beauty and can t think of her as just a
normal person. Quentin and Margo go up to the top of the SunTrust building. When looking at
the city of Orlando from that building, Quentin says that it is beautiful. He suggests this because
you cannot see the rust or the weeds. You can see it the way it was imagined to be. Margo then
says, Everything is uglier close up (Green 57) and then Quentin replies, Not you (Green 57).
Quentin doesn t really understand who Margo is. Quentin isn t thinking about how the closer
you get, the more flaws are shown. He is just thinking about external beauty. Margo is about to
get revenge on her boyfriend for cheating with her best friend. Quentin wonders why he would
cheat and Margo thinks it is because her friend is more attractive than her. Quentin basically says
that Margo is so much more attractive. Margo responds to this by saying, That always seemed so
ridiculous to me, that people would want to be around someone because they re pretty. It s like
picking your breakfast cereals based on colour instead of taste (Green 37). Margo is basically

The Struggle Against the Apartheid State of South Africa...
Mandela s childhood was very important in shaping him to be the man he was. His father losing
his land in 1919 would have affected Mandela s opinion of how the country works as he grew
up, and when he was 16 the main speaker at his circumcision told that Blacks were slaves in their
own country . He grew up with the opinion that his country needed a better rule, because of how
unfair it was to Black people. His earliest decisions to fight for Black liberation were made here.
Another turning point was when Chief Jongintaba died in 1942. He then stayed in Johannesburg
instead of moving back to Mqhekezweni, this showed he wanted to make an impact on the country
as a whole instead of just his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Unity these factions meant that the party could operate more effectively, as was proved when in

Q2. Explain the part played by external pressure in the fight against apartheid and minority rule in
South Africa.
From 1960 onwards, when Harold Macmillan made his change of winds speech, the world started
to place external pressures on South Africa, and this was one of the main causes of the end of
apartheid. Economic sanctions and sporting isolation were the two main subdivisions of external
pressure.
Sporting isolation made South Africa realise that the minority rule and the apartheid regime was
greatly frowned upon by the rest of the world, and caused many Afrikaners to change their attitude
to the way the country was being run; this was because they didn t want to be excluded from the
rest of the world s competitions and tournaments solely for their governments issues; it made the
Afrikaners feel guilty for the regime ruling South Africa. This attitude would eventually help in
ending the apartheid regime.
Economic sanctions, however, were much more effective in the ending of minority rule. Foreign
countries saw South Africa as a risky country to invest in because the sanctions against South Africa
withdrew loans in businesses; businessmen found it harder to have prosperous companies

man with a special gift. Prometheuswas forced to make man a different fromall other creatures.
Therefore he gave man the shape of the gods themselves and gave fire to manto light a heavenly
fire within his mind which would teach him to understand, to count, to speak and remember. This

Zeus plans to take revenge on man and orders to make a woman. All the gods agreed and each
gave the woman gifts of beauty, cunning, deceit and curiosity. Her name was Pandora. Pandora
was also gifted a chest in which she was told held great treasure and was told not to open it.
Pandora can t resist and unleashes hunger, disease, war, greed, anger, jealousy and toil. Pandora
brought the downfall of man. Zeus decides to destroy men altogether. He floods the earth and
only Deucalion and Pyrrha survive. They are left to repopulate the earth with the help of an
oracle. In Prometheus and The People the author uses figurative language, symbolism and a theme
throughout the story. Olivia E. Coolidge uses personification by stating The lid flew up out of her
hands and knocked her aside, while before her frightened eyes, dreadful, shadowy shapes flew out
of the box in an endless stream. (https://online.vitalsource.com/#/books/9781256493914/) We
know she is using personification because she is giving a non living item traits of a living thing.

Test Interference
Have you ever wondered why it is challenging to complete assigned tasks? Although sometimes lack
of motivation and attention are the usual explanations, interference is a common and overlooked
reason, too. Interference is when an automatic process hinders your ability to complete the assigned
task, and it can be studied when the assigned task and automatic process are occurring
simultaneously. Investigating the role of interference in completing tasks has been a long term
investigation in psychology. The most influential work done to test interference is Studies of
Interference in Serial Verbal Reactions by J. Ridley Stroop. He created the original methods of
testing interference. Stroop s (1935) experiment presented inherent and conflicting stimuli
simultaneously to the subjects without any previous exposure. The inherent stimuli created were

Rosinski, Roberta Michnick Golinkoff, and Karen S. Kukish (1975) created an experiment to test
the interference of automatic semantic meaning in children and adults when reading. This
experiment superimposed words over pictures to combine reading and picture identifying tasks
(Rosinski et al., 1975). Rosinski et al. (1975) supported with their results that automatic interference
(word reading in their experiment) has a greater interference effect on the assigned task (picture
identification in their experiment), when the assigned task is not an automatic response, like the
findings of J. Ridley Stroop. This experiment provided additional support that latencies increased
when amount of incongruence increased (Rosinski et al., 1975). The last level tested the effects of
semantics. Nonsense words (CVC words), congruent words, and incongruent words were
superimposed over the pictures; and these results proved that the latency for nonsense words was
much less than the latencies of incongruent words due to the attached meanings of the incongruent
words (Rosinski et al.,

The Weaknesses Of The Tao-Te Ching And The Prince
It is important to recognize not only the strengths of the Tao te Ching and The Prince, but also the
weaknesses. There are some ideas present in these writings that are not practical for a modern
American leader to follow. Lao tzu writes that the best kind of leader is one that the people are
hardly aware of; this would be nearly impossible for an American politician. The Master described
in the Tao te Ching is honest, humble, compassionate, and reserved. These traits are not what
modern politicians strive to be, and are not practical characteristics in a person running for office.
As unsettling as it may sound, American presidential candidates cannot be humble; they must prove
to the public that they are the best fit for the presidency... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With all that has changed since the time Lao tzu lived and since Machiavelli s era, it is
important to note the ideas that remain. Those ideas find support within political parties, and
they conflict in the same way that the Tao te Ching and The Prince have for so long. What
remains is a standoff between two extreme ideologies. I do not mean to suggest that a modern
leader should be like neither Lao tzu nor Machiavelli, rather the opposite. I believe that a good
leader should be like Lao tzu, Machiavelli, Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, and every other
successful leader that came before him. The key to being a good leader is knowing when it is
appropriate to think like Guatama Buddha, and when to use battle strategies similar to those of
Alexander the Great. Ideal leaders do not debate over which of the great strategists from the past is
best; they understand the individual strengths that made historical figures successful and know
when to use each one. An intelligent leader views two extremes, understands the arguments for
both sides, and decides which is better. An ideal leader decides which strengths from each argument
would form the best

Meanwhile, Khassawneh (2015: 26 27) has conducted a research and found that there are four factors that trigger the rejection of the employee to change in government organisations in Jordan. There are due to the lack of participation of employees, inadequate incentives, distrust between higher management and workers, and lack of clarity in the goals of change. He formulated these results by selecting the top four answers of respondents. The works of Khan (1989), Jreisat (1988), and Khassawneh (2005) carried out in different time periods, which is about 17 years. Nevertheless, there are similarities research findings about the reasons that led to the employee refuses to change, namely the lack of commitment of the leadership in making changes. This work has provided insight into some of the research questions on the causes of resistance, so it is considered relevant to this dissertation. Moreover, the work of Khassawneh can be relied on. He is a former government employee. More specifically, I observed the effect of temperature on the common soil bacteria Serratia marcescens. After about 30 seconds in the microwave, I noticed that the test tube s rubber stop, which was placed there to prevent the water from evaporating in the microwave, had completely popped off. I cleaned up the mess in the microwave and made the nutrient agar mixture again; however, this time I placed the mixture in a larger beaker and covered it with the top of a sterile petri dish similarly to how I had previously boiled Mr. Goble s Erlenmeyer flask of agar. Again, after 30 seconds in the microwave, the petri dish lid had come off of the beaker and the mixture had boiled over and onto the microwave. I cleaned the microwave for the second time that day and decided that I needed an even larger container to boil the mixture in, as it seemed the boiling water had nowhere to go in my previous efforts and forced the ejection of each lid. After realizing that the largest flask I was in possession of was the large Erlenmeyer from Mr. Goble, I decided to clean it out quickly (as there was still some remaining nutrient agar in the bottom of it) and make my own nutrient agar for the third time and use the large flask to boil it in. After the third time, my efforts to boil my own nutrient agar proved successful and I poured about 15 mL of the liquid agar into two petri dishes; one ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Let s see if we can sort them out and determine the dominant ones from the lesser ones. The pain which the audience experiences is no accident, but rather one of the themes written into the play. Critic Caroline Spurgeon in Shakespeare s Imagery and What it Tells Us explains the significant contribution which imagery makes to the theme of pain and unpleasantness running through the play: The main image in Othello is that of animals in action, preying upon one another, mischievous, lascivious, cruel or suffering, and through these, the general sense of pain and unpleasantness is much increased ... This usually involves the settlement of citizens from colonial power in the colony. Indigenous Australians have been marginalised by settler colonial Australians, results of this has impacted the way Indigenous Australians are viewed and treated in contemporary society. Indigenous people have struggled to regain their rights such as reclaiming their identities that were misappropriate by the presence of colonials (Maddison, 2013). Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Terra Nullius is an example of how settler colonialism tried to take ownership of Australian land. Terra Nullius is a Latin word that means land belonging to no one (Craven and Parbury, 1999). Captain James Cook claimed Australia and declared that Australia seems to have no fixed habitation but instead habitants of the land, move around from place to place like wild beasts in search of food (Craven and Parbury, 1999). The British settlement and takeover of Australia affected, attitudes and treatment of Indigenous. Terra Nullius denied the humanity and existence of Indigenous Australians and can be considered the cause of most racism towards Indigenous Australia. This has led to the White Australia Act, which depended on the non existence of Indigenous and also the racialisation of Indigenous Australians. The Indigenous population in Australia became subject to racialised identity categories based on their degrees of blood, labelling and classifying people as full blood, half cast (Maddison, 2013). This policy led to removing Indigenous children from their families and communities. This policy was enforced with the intention to erase the Indigenous population, by blending them into invisibility within the colonial population (Maddison, 2013). The nurse will encounter different cultures and beliefs in their practice, some contrary to their own. Their philosophy of nursing will be evident with how they handle the various aspects of the job. I wanted to be the nurse that was able to have a conversation with her patients and still manage to keep them healthy. Essence of Nursing The core of nursing is and should be knowledgeable patient care. The nurse should be well rounded and possess enough knowledge to know not only the technical aspect of patient care, but also how to tend to the patients emotional needs. Kagan, Smith, Cowling Chinn (2009) say It can be argued that the overemphasized focus on technological and medical interventions rather than on services underpinned by caring practices and humanist nursing values puts the health of all humans at risk (p. 75). While medical interventions are necessary, the nurse is responsible for carrying out those interventions in a humane and caring way. If the focus is on the technical side of nursing, the patient as a person is easily forgotten. I believe that to truly care for a patient, the nurse must act as a patient advocate. In more recent times, the nurses role as a patient advocate is expanding and becoming more widely recognized. Influential authors have shown that nurse s role is to speak up for a patient when they are not able to speak up for themselves. Ann Hamric (as cited in Mahlin 2010, p. 248) says that a nurse s ... Jaffree (1985): Central Question: Does the Alabama statute 16 1 20.1, allowing a period of silence for meditation or voluntary prayer violate the First Amendment Establishment Clause that is applied to the states by the Fourteenth Amendment? Facts of the Case: The case of Wallace v. Jaffree calls into question the constitutionality of an Alabama statute that authorized teachers to lead a one minute period of silence for meditation or voluntary prayer in all public schools. Ishmael Jaffree, the parent of three students in the Mobile County Public School system filed a complaint that two of his three children had been subjected to various acts of religious indoctrination, as a result of Alabama statute 16 1 20.1 and asked for an injunction prohibiting Mobile County schools from maintaining or allowing the maintenance of regular religious prayer services. The purpose of Jaffree s complaint was to prohibit the devotional services occurring in his children s school and the consequent mockery of his children that occurred when they refused to recite the prayers to Almighty God (Stevens, 40). This type of law in Alabama public schools was not the first of its kind. Prior to statute 6 11 20.1, Alabama passed law 16 1 20 authorizing one minute of silence in public schools for meditation. After the authorization of statute 16 1 20.1 came 16 1 20.2, which allowed teachers to lead willing students in a prayer (Stevens, 40). Opinion of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 13. Racial Inequality In Brazil Towards the end of the 19th century, immigration to Brazil began to rapidly increase. The demand for coffee continued to increase, and the coffee production industry expanded due to an influx in immigrants from Japan, Portugal, Spain, Italy, as well as several other European countries. Brazil was a divided nation, lacking a unified population or shared culture. The goal of allowing an influx of European immigrants into the country was to conform to European culture, and civilize Brazil. Essentially, Brazil had desires to whiten the population. The largely black, and Mulatto population quickly began to transform into predominantly white. Racial inequality and discrimination marked Brazil, and created distinct divisions amongst the population. Following abolition, Afro Brazilians had immense difficulty in defining their own place in Brazilian society. Prior to the 1980s, racist attitudes as well the intention of Westernizing Brazil, made it challenging for Afro Brazilians to achieve economic or social mobility. Beginning in the 20th century, efforts to diminish racial inequality became increasingly necessary to Brazil. Afro Brazilians have faced severe inequity post abolition, however in recent decades the eradication of racial inequality has become imperative. It wasn t until he tossed the letters onto the counter that he saw the powder blue envelope with his name on it. He tore open the sealed flap and pulled out a simple, understated letter. He read it once, then again to make sure it was really addressed to him. Immediately the excitement and the anxiety of being accepted swirled in his head. • 17. Summary Of Blink By Malcolm Gladwell Blink In Chapter 2 of Blink by Malcolm Gladwell, Gladwell insist that what we think of as freewill is largely an illusion: much of the time, we are simply operating on automatic pilot, and the way we think and act and how we think and act on the spur of the moment are a lot more susceptible to outside influences than we realize. (58). Gladwell is referring to priming, as human beings, our behavior and decision making are often influenced by subtle triggers we are either aware of or not aware of. As humans we are vulnerable to the most subtle stimuli. Gladwell provides examples of priming with different types of exams and games administered to college students. An area where priming occurs on a daily occurrence is at the grocery store because the products sold are strategically placed on the shelves to target a specific audience company s want to sell their product to, the price tag are designed with colors that we associates subconsciously with spending, and there are signs located all around the store that tell you that you ll be saving money so that you buy more of that certain product or so you are more likely to shop at that particular store. Priming is when subtle triggers we are either aware of or not aware of influence our behavior. Gladwell has the reader imagine that he is a professor proctoring a scrambled sentence test where students were asked to walk down a long hallway into an exam room where they were given an exam with a list of five word sets and asked to change each word set into a grammatically four word sentence as fast as possible. The test was not difficult but the college students walked down the hallway more slowly than they walked towards the classroom. This is because ingrained in the list were certain words that were associated with being old. This test, which was developed by a clever psychologist named John Bargh, makes our adaptive unconsciousness ponder about the state of being old. Further research suggests that individuals can be primed to behave differently, various words may be used to influence people to be polite or rude. Malcolm Gladwell demonstrates how a simple scramble sentence test challenges your sub consciousness into believing that you are much older by simply ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Not Being Earnest in The Importance of Being Earnest While some critics contend that The Importance of Being Earnest is completely fanciful and has no relation to the real world, others maintain that Oscar Wilde s trivial comedy for serious people does make significant comments about social class and the institution of marriage. These observations include the prevalent utilization of deceit in everyday affairs. Indeed the characters and plot of the play appear to be entirely irreverent, thus lending weight to the comedic, fanciful aspect. Wilde s conception of deceit as an accepted custom in English aristocracy is also existent in this scene. The practice of Bunburying is established, an act where each man lies to his family about an imaginary invalid friend present somewhere else, in an attempt to pursue leisure activities elsewhere. It is in this discussion that Jack admits to his friend Algernon that he has been lying to his friend in order to maintain the disguise. Thus, it seems as though the very relationship between the two men is founded on deceit. Later in this act, Lady Bracknell and Gwendolyn are introduced. Even though Lady Bracknell is married, it is obvious that the two women are merely female counterparts of Algy and Jack. Both spend the day making visits to others in their social sphere, as Algy and Jack do, holding these visits with utmost importance. It is at this point, also, that the reader is presented with Wilde s views of marriage practices. Earlier in the scene, when Ernest(Jack) announces his intention of proposing to Gwendolyn, Algernon does not congratulate him, rather he denounces the entire institution. • 20. Food Preservatives And Its Effects On Food Food Preservatives Food preservatives are described as natural means or man made chemicals that are used in foods to prevent them from spoiling. A subgroup of preservatives are food additives, which differ from preservatives in the way that additives are not only used to lengthen the life of food, but also to improve taste and appearance. The ultimate goal of preservatives and additives are to improve the quality and lifespan of food by slowing down the decomposition process using chemicals or natural methods, such as salt and dehydration. Food preservatives can be broken down into two basic groups natural and chemical. Natural preservatives are methods such as sun drying, freezing, or adding other ingredients like honey that essentially slow down the speed at which food spoils. Chemical preservatives are chemicals added to foods for the same purpose as natural preservatives are. It is the same with additives; the difference being that they may be also used to purposely change a food s look and taste. Preservatives and additives are used in most of foods, especially in our pre packaged meals, whether it be natural or chemical versions being added. According to historical records, natural methods of preservation, such as salting or dehydrating, have been around for centuries. Vada is stuck in the stage of depression because she believes she is at fault for her mother s death. Through the first half of the movie, Vada is so sure she is dying that she has become a hypochondriac. She takes herself to the doctor to let him know she is dying. She lays on the floor writhing in false pain and dying. Vada feels so guilty about causing her mother s death, that she feels she needs to be punished. Freedom has been a topic of many meetings of Congress over the past few centuries, as it is one of the main American ideals that formed our great nation. However, in the last seventy years, there have been many attacks upon the American people that instill fear in the hearts of many. Fear in a large group of people leads to rash decisions that could eventually precipitate the loss of the common man s freedom. Losing freedom due to fear shies away from all of the traditional American ideals of our forefathers, one of which was opportunity and freedom of the common man. This system that Plato outlines is based on the virtues of wisdom, courage, temperance, and justice. The greatly discussed dilemma of having a child be taught in a public school setting versus a homeschool setting has been evaluated by parents since the idea was first introduced in the 1970 s. Public schooling had been the standard method of teaching since it is a requirement for states to provide public, free educationfor children in grades K 12. However, the backlash against the system began when two educational theorists and supporters of schoolreform, John Holt and Raymond Moore, started to question both the techniques and the products of public schools. Some parents went on to support the ideas of them and began to teach their children in the environment of their own homes for several different reasons. Some included moral or religious reasons, a desire for high educational achievement, dissatisfaction with public schools instructional program, or concerns about drugs and peer pressure in a public school environment. Child development specialists believe that homeschooled children are isolated from the outside world, therefore making them socially handicapped. If being exposed to this type of education on an elementary school level, the child can suffer from the lack of fundamental development of effective social skills needed for a lifetime ahead of them. The English Civil War in 1642 etched a legacy of dread in the people of England, and the war only appeared more disastrous and fruitless when it became apparent the new Puritanical regime was just as irresponsible as the previous regime by Charles I and his predecessor James I. Therefore, when the Glorious Revolution arrived in 1588, England was relieved that the Governmentwas finally adapting to advocate the toleration and the security of civil liberties on a grander scale. There has also been some work on understanding perturbation approaches in bandit problems. Kujala and Elomaa (2005) and Poland (2005) both showed that using the exponential (actually double exponential/Laplace) distribution in an FTPL algorithm coupled with standard unbiased estimation techniques yields near optimal O(NT logN) regret in T rounds with N arms. Neu and BartВґok (2013) introduced the geometric resampling scheme to approximate these probabilities while still guaranteeing low regret. Recently, Abernethy et al. It is characterized by growth of numerous cysts on the kidneys (McPhee, Papadakis Rabow, 2014). The kidneys primary job is to filter the waste products from the blood into urine and ultimately out of the body. The cysts are primarily fluid filled and when they become enlarged, they interfere the normal functioning of the kidneys, leading to enlarged kidney(McPhee et al., 2014). When the enlarged kidney stops properly functioning leading kidney failure. It may take years before the kidneys totally loose function and then require dialysis, which is in only about half of the patients diagnosed with PKD. Wilfred Owen himself took part in the war, consequently witnessing first hand many young men whose lives were similarly destroyed. In the poem, Out, Out , Robert Frost shows the fragility of life in two ways. Instead of imagining the Margo of his dreams, who is perfect and daring, he sees a different side, like looking through a fun house mirror. Using the theme of perceptions vs. reality, John Greenshows readers through Quentin that you have to dig deeper in order to know and understand someone. Margo s peers think of Margo as this beautiful, free spirited girl, but they do not really know who she is inside. When ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Ben even pays attention to how Margo is and how she acts. He recognizes how adventurous and awesome she is without even really knowing her. He is using stories to assume the way is or the way she acts, even to the extent of predicting her future. At first, Quentin has trouble seeing Margo past her outer beauty and can t think of her as just a normal person. Quentin and Margo go up to the top of the SunTrust building. When looking at the city of Orlando from that building, Quentin says that it is beautiful. He suggests this because you cannot see the rust or the weeds. You can see it the way it was imagined to be. Margo then says, Everything is uglier close up (Green 57) and then Quentin replies, Not you (Green 57). Quentin doesn t really understand who Margo is. Quentin isn t thinking about how the closer you get, the more flaws are shown. He is just thinking about external beauty. Margo is about to get revenge on her boyfriend for cheating with her best friend. Quentin wonders why he would cheat and Margo thinks it is because her friend is more attractive than her. Quentin basically says that Margo is so much more attractive. Margo responds to this by saying, That always seemed so ridiculous to me, that people would want to be around someone because they re pretty. It s like picking your breakfast cereals based on colour instead of taste (Green 37). Margo is basically calling Quentin ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 46. The Struggle Against the Apartheid State of South Africa... Mandela s childhood was very important in shaping him to be the man he was. His father losing his land in 1919 would have affected Mandela s opinion of how the country works as he grew up, and when he was 16 the main speaker at his circumcision told that Blacks were slaves in their own country . He grew up with the opinion that his country needed a better rule, because of how unfair it was to Black people. His earliest decisions to fight for Black liberation were made here. Another turning point was when Chief Jongintaba died in 1942. He then stayed in Johannesburg instead of moving back to Mqhekezweni, this showed he wanted to make an impact on the country as a whole instead of just his ... Unity these factions meant that the party could operate more effectively, as was proved when in 1994 Mandela became the first democratically elected president of South Africa. Q2. Explain the part played by external pressure in the fight against apartheid and minority rule in South Africa. From 1960 onwards, when Harold Macmillan made his change of winds speech, the world started to place external pressures on South Africa, and this was one of the main causes of the end of apartheid. Economic sanctions and sporting isolation were the two main subdivisions of external pressure. Sporting isolation made South Africa realise that the minority rule and the apartheid regime was greatly frowned upon by the rest of the world, and caused many Afrikaners to change their attitude to the way the country was being run; this was because they didn t want to be excluded from the rest of the world s competitions and tournaments solely for their governments issues; it made the Afrikaners feel guilty for the regime ruling South Africa. This attitude would eventually help in ending the apartheid regime. Economic sanctions, however, were much more effective in the ending of minority rule. Foreign countries saw South Africa as a risky country to invest in because the sanctions against South Africa withdrew loans in businesses; businessmen found it harder to have prosperous companies ... • 48. Test Interference Have you ever wondered why it is challenging to complete assigned tasks? Although sometimes lack of motivation and attention are the usual explanations, interference is a common and overlooked reason, too. Interference is when an automatic process hinders your ability to complete the assigned task, and it can be studied when the assigned task and automatic process are occurring simultaneously. Investigating the role of interference in completing tasks has been a long term investigation in psychology. The most influential work done to test interference is Studies of Interference in Serial Verbal Reactions by J. Ridley Stroop. He created the original methods of testing interference. Stroop s (1935) experiment presented inherent and conflicting stimuli simultaneously to the subjects without any previous exposure. The inherent stimuli created were color names written in an incongruent text... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Rosinski, Roberta Michnick Golinkoff, and Karen S. Kukish (1975) created an experiment to test the interference of automatic semantic meaning in children and adults when reading. This experiment superimposed words over pictures to combine reading and picture identifying tasks (Rosinski et al., 1975). Rosinski et al. (1975) supported with their results that automatic interference (word reading in their experiment) has a greater interference effect on the assigned task (picture identification in their experiment), when the assigned task is not an automatic response, like the findings of J. Ridley Stroop. This experiment provided additional support that latencies increased when amount of incongruence increased (Rosinski et al., 1975). The last level tested the effects of semantics. Nonsense words (CVC words), congruent words, and incongruent words were superimposed over the pictures; and these results proved that the latency for nonsense words was much less than the latencies of incongruent words due to the attached meanings of the incongruent words (Rosinski et al., ... • 49. The Weaknesses Of The Tao-Te Ching And The Prince It is important to recognize not only the strengths of the Tao te Ching and The Prince, but also the weaknesses. There are some ideas present in these writings that are not practical for a modern American leader to follow. Lao tzu writes that the best kind of leader is one that the people are hardly aware of; this would be nearly impossible for an American politician. The Master described in the Tao te Ching is honest, humble, compassionate, and reserved. These traits are not what modern politicians strive to be, and are not practical characteristics in a person running for office. As unsettling as it may sound, American presidential candidates cannot be humble; they must prove to the public that they are the best fit for the presidency... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With all that has changed since the time Lao tzu lived and since Machiavelli s era, it is important to note the ideas that remain. Those ideas find support within political parties, and they conflict in the same way that the Tao te Ching and The Prince have for so long. What remains is a standoff between two extreme ideologies. I do not mean to suggest that a modern leader should be like neither Lao tzu nor Machiavelli, rather the opposite. I believe that a good leader should be like Lao tzu, Machiavelli, Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, and every other successful leader that came before him. The key to being a good leader is knowing when it is appropriate to think like Guatama Buddha, and when to use battle strategies similar to those of Alexander the Great. Ideal leaders do not debate over which of the great strategists from the past is best; they understand the individual strengths that made historical figures successful and know when to use each one. An intelligent leader views two extremes, understands the arguments for both sides, and decides which is better. An ideal leader decides which strengths from each argument would form the best ...
