Assess The Causes Of Child Poverty
Child poverty is not just something that poorer countries have to deal with, it is a world wide issue
involving even the richest countries, where the disparity between rich and poor can be worse than in
developing countries. This essay will examine some of the key causes of child poverty as well as the
impacts on society. The reality of child poverty in the UK is that some families living on a low income
and have only about £13 per day per person. (Barnardo s online 2015). With this in mind, many people
may well have met, or know, families that are below the UK poverty line.
Child poverty is defined as any group of people, or individuals, who are unable, through lack of
money, to adequately feed themselves. They may not be able to afford suitable clothing or provide
themselves with suitable heated accommodation. Child poverty can cause serious problems for
children. For those in poverty it means being cold, hungry and often not being able to join activities
with friends or activities that cost money, such as bowling, going to the cinema, swimming or other
interests and pursuits. In addition, 60% of families on the lower incomes cannot afford to take their
children on holiday for one week a year. (Child Poverty Action Group online 2015). ... Show more

For those families, this money is needed to pay for all of their day to day living costs. This would
include necessities, like food and transport, but also all household bills such as electricity, gas and
water, as well as telephone and TV licence. Occasional items still need to be purchased from this
money, items such as clothing, toiletries and replacing broken household items such as the washing
machine or vacuum cleaner. This money would also include school trips and any activities for the
children. (Barnardo s online

Role Of The Railroads Shifted Over Time
The role of the railroads shifted over time. Eight months after the United States entered the First
World War in 1918, President Woodrow Wilson called for the country s railroads to be nationalized to
mean the demands of the war. He did so under the Federal Possession and Control Act. As part of this
process, he also decided to have new steam engines and cars designed to boost the abilities of the rail
industry. He also arranged for the Railroad Control Act which took place in 1920. This act stated that
when a peace treaty was signed, within 21 months, the railroads would be returned to their owners and
compensation would be given for use of property. This did occur and the railroads were returned to
private property. Railroads not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This allows the industry to be better connected and function as a whole to allow for best productivity,
volume, revenue, and rates. Ultimately, the history of the rail industry was build one person at a time
as they discovered and implemented a connection that would advance the industry. However, there
were some key individuals who greatly influenced the process. As previously mentioned, Colonel
John Stevens was an influential individual as he was a spark towards the first American railroad.
Another instrumental individual was James Hill. Hill is known for his expansion of the railroads. He
was a U.S. and Canadian railroad executive. He owned and grew the Great Northern Railway
Company, and he also added additional companies. Jay Gould was another influential railroad
executive. He is best known for his work as a financer and developer of projects in the rail industry.
The influential people are not limited to only rails though. Cornelius Vanderbilt was known for his
part in the shipping industry as a whole. He started out with a steamboat company, moved into
steamships, and then expanded to include railroads. He also implemented the first service rail between
New York and Chicago. In the same way, there are some principal companies who serve as
fundamental pieces of the industry today. These main companies are referred to as Class 1 Railroads.
In order for a railroad to be classified as Class 1 it must have an operating revenue of $433.2 million
or more. There are

Big Brother Is The Ultimate Power Holder And The Party
Everyone wants power over something but, there was one government in 1984 that had power over
everything. Big Brother is the ultimate power holder and the Party is his face. There were numerous of
ways on how the Party had control over its citizens. For instance, they had control over the
information and history, control over the citizen lives, and families. Power played a big role in the
society of 1984. The Party controlled every source of information in 1984. They managed and rewrote
the content of all newspapers and histories for their own sake. The Party didn t want the citizens to
have pictures or even documents from their past. As a result, this caused memories to be uncertain,
and the citizens were willing to believe whatever the Party

My Goals In My Life
The big question, What do I want to do with my life? floats through my mind more and more often as
graduation approaches. I have many goals and ambitions I wish to achieve after high school, but
deciding something as important as what career I should pursue has brought me much uneasiness.
These past few months I have struggled to figure out what I am truly passionate about; however, as I
mature I begin to find so much fulfillment in helping others, both mentally and physically. Growing
up with a sizable family is one of my most wonderful blessings. My family and the environment that I
have grown up in has had a tremendous impact on who I am and who I aspire to be. Both of my
parents immigrated from Mexico and became residents approximately twenty five years ago. Neither
of them graduated high school for distinct reasons. My dad now works diligently to provide for us and
my mom takes care of the house and our needs. They have taught me to put others before myself and
have shaped me into who I am today. My loved ones are one of my biggest inspirations. I strive to
show them the person I can become and the impact that I can have on others. Ever since I was a small
child, I was fascinated with animals and every aspect of nature. For the longest time, I believed I
would aim to go into a field of animal science/research. As I grow into my own skin I have begun to
find different passions within me. Leadership and service have taken a great role in my high school
life and both

The Disease Of Behcet s Disease
In 1937, a rare disease called Behcet s Disease (BD) was first described by Dr. Hulusi Behcet, who is
a dermatologist in Turkey. The disease is also known as Behcet s syndrome and described by The
American Behcet s Disease Association (2014) as a rare, chronic, autoimmune, autoinflammatory
disorder (American Behcet s Disease Association [ABDA], 2014). The disease, recognized
worldwide, can affect multiple systems in the human body and associated with morbidity and
mortality. Dr. Hulusi Behcet (2014) first described the disease as a triad of oral ulcers, genital ulcers
and ocular inflammation (ABDA, 2014). The epidemiology behind this disease indicates its
prevalence in multiple countries. It is less prevalent in the United States and Western Europe.
According to National Organization for Rare Disorders (2015),the highest prevalence rate, 80 370
cases per 100,000, of this disease is in Turkey, as well as in Japan, Korea, China, Iran and Saudi
Arabia (National Organization for Rare Disorders [NORD], 2015). According to the National Institute
of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Disease, the disease affects more men than women in
Middle Eastern and Asian countries. However, it affects more women than men in the United States
(National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Disease [NIAMS], 2015). It can develop
in people of all ages but it tends to develop in people between the ages of 20 to 40. The Behcet s

The Musgrave Ritual Analysis
For Sherlock Holmes, solving mysteries is more than just a mindless hobby; to Holmes, solving
mysteries is a necessity to survive. In The Musgrave Ritual, Watson describes that during stagnant
periods of no mysteries, Holmes shoots bullets into the walls to pass time, Holmes in one of his queer
humours would sit in an arm chair, with his hair trigger and a hundred Boxer cartridges, and proceed
to adorn the opposite wall with a patriotic V.R. done in bullet pocks (Doyle 227). Holmes brain
requires exercise and attention, without mysteries, he is overwhelmed with anxiety and practically
driven to the brink of insanity. Deduction and the proficiency of his mind is second nature, in the first
few seconds when Holmes lays eyes on a person, he has compiled an intense investigative collection
of assorted facts about that said person. For ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Instead, he appears to seek the rewarding feeling that comes to him from simply solving a mystery. In
the Scandal in Bohemia, Holmes was not upset that he had not brought Irene Adler to justice in the
respect originally planned, but he was upset at the fact that she had outsmarted him (Doyle 122). For
Holmes, defeat had been unheard of. Moreover, in The Speckled Band, Helen Stoner offers Holmes
money for his labors but he replies, as to reward, my profession is its reward (Doyle 205) implying
that he is not looking for money, but instead his next puzzle to solve. Therefore, although he has the
ability to collect monetary compensation, he is simply in it for the puzzle. Furthermore, upon the death
of Dr. Grimesby Roylott, Holmes states, I am no doubt indirectly responsible for [his] death, and I
cannot say that it is likely to weigh very heavily upon my conscience (226). Although Holmes had
seemed fearful for Helen Stoner, the lack of emotion for Dr. Roylott shows he was not interested in
justice but the puzzle

Deliver Exactly What Chinese Clients Expect of You
Marketing your business to a Chinese business is in complete contrast to marketing it to a western
audience. Potential Chinese clients value various non intuitive aspects of your business including the
ability to extensively negotiate, flexibility, use precise language for what the product delivers, and
communicative value, and patiently building relationships.
LISTEN Understanding What Prospective Clients Need
Know what your prospective clients are looking from your business niche. Learn how they want to be
targeted and collect the marketing data.
Chinese clients asses companies in a completely different vein from the way western businesses are
inclined to do so. Chinese clients deride marketing and base their assessment on straight forwardness
in communication, and personalized efforts in building relationships. Hence, different marketing
channels are preferred in China.
Learn How They Want to be Targeted
Chinese clients do not react to marketing efforts like their western counterparts. The Chinese clientele
greatly derides marketing and often sees sales and marketing as part of sales and not a distinct
discipline. As a result, targeting them through promotional material may become problematic and
backfire. The answer to how potential clients want to be targeted, in general is similar, but may require
further market research. As in other markets, a combination of a

Coming Of Age Throughout Mississippi By Anne Moody
Coming of Age in Mississippi Essay
Fredric Stanley
HIST 3881
Professor James Conway
7 November 2015 Though we Americans, in all of our efforts, feel as if the day of racism is coming to
an end, I feel it is merely evolving into a much more subtle approach. Seeing life through the words of
Anne Moody in her book entitled, Coming of Age in Mississippi , shows that racism, even back then,
is treated with remedies versus a cure. After the many anti discrimination legislations passed as well as
activist groups shedding light on all of the significant differences and injustices that African
Americans face, one would think that by now racism would be far behind us here in America. After a
close review of Anne Moody s life, her growing up ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Anne Moody saw the true hideousness of racial violence shortly after beginning high school. Emmet
Till was killed by a group of white men for merely whistling and showing interest in a white woman.
Anne was surprised at how unaware she was to the things happening around her. I don t remember if
anyone was murdered, but back when I was in high school it was almost as if whites viewed it to be
cardinal sin for an African American male to be with a white woman. This too was a time where I saw
the true reality of what it was to be an African American versus a White American. Anne s mother
informed her to continue throughout life as if nothing happened but understandably she couldn t.
While working Anne could not focus and her rage began to display. Mrs. Burke made an attempt to
talk to Anne concerning Emmet Till s death but Anne acted as if she didn t know what Mrs. Burke was
speaking of. Mrs. Burke told her that that is what happens when black people step out of place with
whites. It was at that point Anne began to fear for her life now learning the true outlook of being an
African American. I see on a daily basis where African Americans accept injustice and move on with
life as if it doesn t matter. Instead of standing in the gap for what could very well hit home African
Americans tend to turn a blind eye to the corruption and cruelty we face.
So many times within the work force we, African Americans, are reminded where we stand in the eye

Ruined Me Changes
Yes, you read the title correctly. Yoga has ruined my life. It has changed and shifted me from the
inside out. The way I think, speak, and even the way I eat and breathe is totally different because of
yoga. Yoga has changed just about everything about me, but it has ruined me in three big ways:
1. Response versus Reaction
There was a time in my life that I didn t really think about things. I didn t think before I spoke. I didn t
think before I made big decisions, like what colleges to apply for. I didn t really question anything
either. I was OK with whatever life path I was on. I was OK with the mean boys I dated and the
clothes I wore. I rarely ever took a moment to wonder if the activities and people I was engaging were
harmful or careless. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It was all about me (sometimes it kind of still, is to be honest). I didn t care if I hurt your feelings. I
thought volunteering was for nerds. I always satisfied my own pleasures. I would lie and manipulate
to get my way (OK, Mom, I admitted it, are you happy now?!). I wouldn t return favors. I used people.
And then... The darn yoga. Yoga kicked and scratched and bruised my ego. It put me in my place on
more than on occasion and force fed me some humble pie. It made me care about other people. Yoga
led me to Kula for Karma, and then I realized how important seva and volunteering are. Now I can t
imagine a life without them. As mentioned earlier, it made me think before I spoke... And in those
thoughts, other people s feelings and circumstances came up. I found myself forgiving people and
praying for people rather than threatening people and pulling hair. Now I want other people to feel
good. I don t lie.... As much. I don t think I m manipulative anymore (but my mom will have to
confirm that). Now I m a favor giving queen, and a lot of the time I really, really don t expect anything
in return. I m apologetic. I m kind ish. Not only to other people, but to

MIXED THEORIES OF TORT LAW: AFFIRMING BOTH DETERRENCE AND CORRECTIVE
JUSTICE Gary T. Schwartza Copyright (c) 1997 Texas Law Review Association; Gary T. Schwartz
Introduction Currently there are two major camps of tort scholars. One understands tort liability as an
instrument aimed largely at the goal of deterrence, commonly explained within the framework of
economics. The other looks at tort law as a way of achieving corrective justice between the parties. If
these are alternative camps, they are also to a large measure unfriendly camps: much of the time each
treats the other with neglect or even derision. The development of each scholarly ... Show more

In the early 1970s, the work of Guido Calabresi15 and Richard Posner16 precipitated what has proved
to be an explosion of scholarship analyzing tort law in economic terms and emphasizing deterrence as
a primary tort objective.17 One major school of legal economists claims that economics provides a
splendid and nearly complete account of the body of tort doctrine.18 *1804 As it happens, deterrence
had not played a significant role in traditional tort scholarship. When Landes and Posner expounded
their theory of deterrence as a basic tort objective, they reviewed the record of early tort writings to
determine what support they could find for this theory; they ended up merely reporting that with the
benefit of hindsight, it is possible to find . . . prefigurings of the modern economic approach in
Holmes s chapters on tort law and

Symbolism In Dr Jekyll And Mr Hyde
The short fictional novel The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde tells the tale of a dedicated
London lawyer named Gabriel Utterson who searches for truth after a close friend of his named Henry
Jekyll, gradually spirals downward, committing unspeakable acts of violence and depravity following
his first ingestion of a mystical potion. Utterson must uncover the buried secrets kept by the
withdrawn doctor and childhood friend before it is too late, while also investigating the puzzling
murder of a respected senator and former client of his. Prominent themes in the book such as the
polarization of the human psyche, the paradoxical effect of silence and the inherent, thinly veiled
darkness that lies in commercial centers and popular cities ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Hyde s physical appearance, the symbolism of the lab connecting to Dr. Jekyll s home, and the
symbolism of the mystical potion taken by Dr. Jekyll all help convey the powerful themes that
transcend the book. First and foremost, Mr. Hyde s physical appearance described by those that have
seen him commit horrible atrocities signifies his alternate or dual personality as he crosses societal
boundaries. Transformed from a tall, revered and affluent doctor, to a shorter hairier uglier looking
figure, Dr Jekyll represents the part of society most of us try to embrace while his more nefarious
counterpart represents the greatest fears of society a killer without a motive who feels euphoric and
rejuvenated after slaying innocent prey. The lab that connects Dr. Jekyll s home to his lab also allows
readers to acknowledge the vastly different personalities that a person may have. After having its door
broken down, this same lab illustrates that secrets cannot be kept indefinitely, especially those that
regard personality and there will eventually come a time when a victor is chosen between the
aforementioned good and evil combating inside an individual s head. The potion that is discovered to
have helped transform Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde could represent a plethora of external and internal
catalysts. Today, substances like drugs and alcohol may have a similar effect to the potion taken by Dr.
Jekyll. Internal factors like greed and gluttony could also symbolize the potion s effect on the mind
and body. Many of the listed substances don t create something that isn t already there; rather they
expose our conscious and subconscious desires and in some cases amplify them. This is where
genetics and natural, inherent proclivities come into play, making certain behavior like smoking and
drinking enticing. These can sometimes reveal our true nature. Dr. Jekyll longed for true freedom and
through the simple intake of a potion he was able to attain a

The Landscape Lewis
Peirce F. Lewis s Axioms for Reading the Landscape focuses on how to read and understand
landscapes through a set of rules which he calls axioms. In the Geographic (or Ecological) Axiom,
Lewis (1979, 24) argues that studying a landscape outside its location makes no sense in gaining
cultural insight on the landscape. Don Mitchell (2007, 43) in New Axioms for the Landscape, presents
the idea that the shape of the land provides direction to its social life. Carrie Breitbach s (2009) The

In that regard, South Dakota s social reproduction represents the input that people put (output) into the
state s economy. South Dakota s economy relies 38 percent on the beef and cattle industry (Breitbach

butcher shops and cattle farms for their livelihood and overall economy. Once Walmart moved in, their
businesses were forced to close because it became too expensive to compete. Clayton Farmen a small
town butcher from Groton was also affected by the changes. His business closed and the relationships
he had formed with his customers ended. Breitbach writes, For Clayton Farmen, the restructuring that
led to the decline of small butcher shops also meant the end of the personal relationships that sustained
his job and gave him the confidence that he was selling quality food (2009, 543). With the businesses

Remember the Alamo! This instantly iconic decree of hope and patriotism was yelled by Texan
soldiers as they fought in the Battle of San Jacinto, the deciding battle in the Texas war for
independence. The battle only lasted eighteen short minutes, and it was a Texan victory, causing them
to gain independence from Mexico. Those two events, the Battle of the Alamo and the Battle of San
Jacinto, inspired many people in many different ways, including Henry Arthur McArdle. McArdle was
a painter who would go on to paint two very famous paintings, The Battle of San Jacinto and Dawn at

Essay On Restoration Of The Everglades
Restoration of Florida s Everglades The Everglades in South Florida, home of 36 such endangered
species such as the American Crocodile and the Florida Panther, slowly continues to diminish.
According to the website of the National Wildlife Refuge Association (NWRA), the Everglades played
a crucial role in the lives of Florida s human residents ( Everglades ). Since the 1980s, the government
established efforts to protect wildlife and vegetation. Organization groups continue planning on
restoring the most well known wetland on Florida soil. In other words, the development of urban
communities and agriculture causes a mass increase in pollution and flood watches. The ongoing
conservation of the Everglades preserves limited water quality, protect wildlife, and prevent urban
development. Recently, the heap of pollution caused a massive drainage in the Everglades water
quality. Tramontana and Johnson (2003) reported that much of Florida s early development was based
upon draining and removing excess water from wetlands... and it was thought if drained, the land
could be put to better use (Human Development section, para. 2). Pollution destroys the cleanliness of
the wetland leading to a decrease in restoration. Millions amount of cash produced to repair water

Chaucer s Canterbury Tales: The General Prologue portrays the newly formed social division in
Medieval England by having people from the noble, gentry, church, and working social groups come
together on a journey to the Canterbury Chapel. A modern day American version of this poem would
also include a diverse group of people. The nobility in The Canterbury Tales is represented by the
knight, which Chaucer describes as loving, trouthe and honour, freedom and curteisye (46). Since the
knight is a worthy defender and protector of the people, the modern day equivalent would be our
country s police officers and military. For higher ranking nobility, American ... Show more content on

During the fourteenth century, the control of the church weakened, and the church officials were no
longer seen as nobility. Despite being poor, the parson in The Canterbury Tales displayed a
hardworking and caring demeanor. Chaucer further explains the parson s character by mentioning, that
first he wroughte, and afterward he taught (499). The parson s involvement in society can be mirrored
by not only modern day preachers and church leaders, but by teachers as well. Teachers take the
knowledge from their education and convey this wisdom onto students, much like the parson. The
qualities of today s working class can be seen through Chaucer s depiction of the plowman. Indicating
the importance and humility of the plowman s work, Chaucer establishes his significance in society.
Our farmers, factory workers, and construction workers show the same persistent work ethic as the
plowman, which exemplifies that they are the foundation of the American society. Where class and
social status does not determine acceptability, the Canterbury Chapel is common ground for all the
pilgrims to pray and make what they want out of the experience. A

Effects Of Classical Conditioning In A Bite Of China
Introduction
The psychology theory seems to be professional, and it is hard to use in daily lives in many common
people s views. However, some principles are used widely in TV shows or movies. For example,
classical conditioning can make people to perform a specific behavior after several times training . In
the essay, the author will introduce a TV show called A Bite of China and discuss how the TV show
use classical conditioning.
Background information
Classical Conditioning
Classical Conditioning was founded by a Russian physiologist, Ivan P. Pavlov, in the early 1900s. At
first, He assumed that animals have automatic connections called unconditioned reflexes, which is a
reflection between a fixed stimulus and response such as the food and secreting digestive juices. He
speculated that the stimulus can be transferred from one to another. After that, Pavlov did the
experiments and get the conclusion. In the process, he gave a dog food and the dog salivated. The
connection between the food and the salivation was automatic requiring no training. The food was
called unconditioned stimulus (UCS) and the salivation was called unconditioned response (UCR).
The UCS is an event that automatically elicits an UCR. In other words, the UCR is the action that the
UCS elicits. Next, Pavlov introduced a new stimulus, such as a metronome. At the beginning, the dogs
heard the metronome but did not salivate. In this period, the metronome was a neutral stimulus (NS)
about salivation. After

Calypso Part 2 Essay
Calypso By the time one turns to Part II of Ulysses, it is clear that there are no coincidences when it
comes to Joyce s writings. Every word was placed after agonized deliberation and if a theme appears
to be reoccurring, it is because Joyce assigned deeper meaning than a cursory read of the word may
suggest. Both in the beginning chapter of The Telemachiad and the initial chapter of Part II, Calypso ,
Joyce leaves the protagonists keyless Stephen Dedalus hands the key to his tower to Buck Mulligan
and Leopold Bloom chose to leave home without his key as to not disturb his wife. In a book
containing so many complicated and hidden notions, this motif is easily identifiable. Yet, it is only
when you explore the greater significance of two keyless heroes that this symbolization can be fully
appreciated. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Buck Mulligan, a medical student who is Stephen s tower mate despite not paying any rent, simply
wants to exploit Stephen s talents as an artist for petty, self serving, monetary gain. Mulligan has no
appreciation for the actual artistry Stephen possesses, just the selfish economic value it may have for
him. Echoing this sentiment, when the milkwoman arrives in Telemachus , she is more concerned with
Mulligan, the medical student, than Stephen, the artist. Stephen, who sees the milkwoman as
representing the greater ideals of Ireland, his home, is disillusioned by this reality. So, we see that
Stephen is neither accepted by the people that surround him nor the society he is surrounded by. Thus,
the key, or rather the lack of the key, is a symbol that embodies Stephen s distressing reality of not
being able to feel at home, even though he is home. Yet, when you cannot open the door, you certainly
cannot feel comfortable

Song Comparison Essay The road of life can be a bumpy one. There will always be twists and turns
that can alter a person s life, changing the course of their destination. Even though life can be tough,
you have to draw upon your inner strength in order to persevere. The songs, Move Along by The All

The theme is how when you have a tough, important moment in life, you have to make the best of it
and move along. An image for these lyrics will help you connect to the theme because you can see
what is going on and a picture will help you understand something more. In my next paragraph, I will
be talking about how the singers used repetition to emphasize certain points. In these songs, lyrics
were repeated. Repetition draws the listener s attention to particular words or phrases. In the song,
Time of Your Life, the singer repeats the line, It s something unpredictable, but in the end it s right. I
hope you had the time of your life. This line is repeated throughout the song multiple times. The
singer is emphasizing the fact that anything can happen when you make your choice but in the end,
you have to just relax and be happy. He wants the audience to really understand it. In the other song,
the line, Move along, move along. Just to make it through The singer is repeating the term, Move
along because that is the main message in this song. It is to move along when things seem bad. The
singer wants the audience to really get the message and to feel good when they relate to this song.
These lines connect to the theme because they are talking about moving on in tough situations and
being satisfied with the outcome. These lyrics were emphasized well. Besides repetition, the singers
also used symbols and juxtaposition to

With the end of colonialism, Indian popular cinema emerged as India s sole model of national unity
and films were used as a tool for social critique. 1950 1960: A Golden Age of Indian Cinema
1950s saw the increasing popularity of cinema that derived its inspiration from realism. Foreign
influence played a key role in this development. The first International Film Festivals of India were
held in 1952. The film festival helped Indian filmmakers learn more about French and Italian neo
realist films.
Satyajit Ray, with his debut Bengali film, Pather Panchali (1955), became the pioneer of a genre of
films that would come to be recognized as Indian parallel cinema. The film won the Best Human
Document award at the Cannes Film Festival and brought Indian cinema into the international
limelight. Ray s film also marked the beginning of the resurgence of Bengali cinema, where films
targeted educated and sensitive viewers.
While Indian parallel cinema was making a mark in the festival circuits, traditional Bollywood was
gaining popularity overseas. Raj Kapoor, who both directed and acted in his films, played a key role in
popularizing mainstream Indian cinema abroad. Kapoor s film Awara (1951), dubbed in Turkish,
Farsi, and Arabic, broke box office records in South East Asia and the Middle East. His films were
also very popular in Russia and he reached such heights of popularity that the Russians paid tribute to

Great success comes from great leaders. One of the greatest military leaders in history, was a local
Fort Smith native named William O. Darby. Brigadier General William O. Darby s life and leadership
substantially influenced the United States Army in many ways. General Darby s creation of the United
States Army, Army Rangers was perhaps one of the greatest attributes to the United States military.
William Darby s militaristic creation became incredibly substantial with the aid of the following

took place in halting German troops from occupying North African seaports. Spearheading the
invasion in the Port of Arzew, Algeria were Darby s First Ranger Battalion. This was accomplished by
executing a surprise night landing, silencing two gun batteries, and opening the way for the capture of
Oran. A night raid was conducted in Tunisia in 1943. The execution of the night raid took place behind

Barbie Doll s Influence On Society

to be. Barbie always represented the fact that a woman has choices, Ruth says. (Inc, n.d) Ruth and

Reflective Essay On Night And Fog
There was a point in time, when the Holocaust tragedy transpired, where the Nazi s committed
genocide during World War II. In this day in age, the world looks back upon these ultimate crimes
against humanity, when these atrocities occurred, believing this could never feasibly happen again in
our time. Alain Resnais created the self reflective documentary film, Night and Fog, to act as a
warning to the audience that the tragic significance of the Holocaust was a past reality and always will
threaten humanity by its ability to return and become our present reality.
The circular narrative of the film began in the present, reverts to the past, while returning in the end to
the present time. With Resnair s circular narrative, he was able to show ... Show more content on

Entrepreneurship Is A Field Of Business
Over the years, entrepreneurship is a field of business that has been growing rapidly. Although the
concept of entrepreneurship is highly debated on what it is exactly, in a simple way it is acting on one
s knowledge and thoughts and developing those into innovations, which in the end will improve the
world and in return hopefully allow the entrepreneur to receive a gain in either a monetary or non
monetary sense. Within entrepreneurship, there are many different fields to this broad business
platform. Since I am a collegiate basketball player and have been surrounded by sports my entire life,
I have decided to focus on entrepreneurship within the sports industry. Again, this is growing rapidly
along with entrepreneurship, however, if one would research this specific field of entrepreneurship,
they would find that it is a young practice. In this paper, I will be focusing on the owners in the NBA
specifically comparing and contrasting the newer owners verses the older owners. Primarily most of
the newer owners are younger guys who made most of their money in uncertain business deals that led
to large profits. Thus, they are successful entrepreneurs who took their skills and prior knowledge and
applied that to the NBA. On the other hand, older NBA owners provide an old school business
approach, which is usually based off instincts and knowledge of the game. Therefore, the issue I will
be discussing will regard owning a NBA team, which I will go in depth to talk about why the

Introduction
In today s world a leader in any position must lead, but a leader in the public safety field must be
capable of managing, as well as being able to understand and identify a crisis. Within the public safety
arena having this type of leadership skills have become progressively necessary as global disasters and
other crisis has been on the rise in the past decade. Nonetheless, leaders that tackle the crisis
leadership concept sometimes tends to mainly focus on how crisis organization is perceived verses
focus on the associations which is more of a tactical way of leadership.

Literature Review
For this research literature review we opted to set our context of this research that will concentrate on
two questions which are: 1) Crisis leadership, and 2) leadership issues that might occur during a crisis
and the organizations differentiating goals.
Understanding the meaning of Crisis leadership Before we move on with our research we need to
define what crisis leader should do. Well, James and Wooten (2005), states that a crisis leader should
always be scanning the environment to detect signals of crisis. Therefore, once a leader has detected a
crisis, then the leader should implement steps that should include: containment and damage control for
their communities safety; prevention and preparation; learning from past events; and recovery. There
are some leaders that believe that not all public safety leaders have learned their lesson from other
analyzation or research studies on crisis. Thereby, crisis leadership requires that decision to be made
quickly to limit damage to the community, employees, stakeholders, and organization ( Crisis
Management , n.d.). So, if we cannot prevent this type of poor

What Is The Ambiguity In My Papa s Waltz
People say there are many types of drunk stereotypes in the world: the fun drunk, the romantic drunk,
the destructive drunk, the list goes on and on. My Papa s Waltz by Theodore Roethke is about a drunk
father who came home from work and is waltzing with his son. The ABAB rhyme scheme makes the
poem sound like a waltz like the title suggests, but the diction makes the poem heavy. The ambiguity
in this poem, based on the diction, leads to two different images, both include a drunk father but one is
abusive and the other is happy. The beginning and the end of the poem give off two different vibes.
The beginning of the poem seems dark: But I hung on like death:/Such waltzing was not easy (3 4).

Branched Chain Amino Acids Analysis
The Efficiency of Branched Chain Amino Acids (BCAAs)
Nowadays, it seems like every new supplement is the greatest at building muscle, improving
performance or burning fat. With so many claims from name brand supplement companies, it can be
hard for individuals to weed out the good from the bad. In order to understand if a supplement is right
for you, you need to remember what the point of supplementation is.
Why do we need supplements?
The point of supplementation is to obtain a nutrient that your body is not receiving or not receiving
sufficient amounts through diet alone. In this article, we ll discuss whether BCAA s are something you
need to incorporate into your diet, or if you re just pissing away your money. Literally.
What are Branched Chain Amino Acids?
First off, let s review what Branched Chain Amino Acids are (BCAA s for short). BCAA s are a

But as far us gym rats, we probably won t see any benefit. In terms of reducing muscle soreness,
BCAAs have been proven beneficial. But remember, these studies used just BCAA supplementation
alone. Most Whey protein shakes will contain these same levels of BCAAs, so additionally BCAA
supplementation may not be necessary. Lastly, those who have dietary restrictions from animal based
products could see the biggest impact from BCAA supplementation, as BCAAs are found scarce in the
plant based protein category.
At the end of the day, whenever you re looking into trying out a new supplement, do your homework.
Research peer reviewed articles and studies about the supplement, and compare the results with your
own training goals. Supplements like BCAAs can help, but the greatest supplement of all is the blood,
sweat and tears you put into your training

How Does Frost Use Figurative Language In Birches
The poem, Birches written by Robert Frost, depicts author s personal desire to escape the normality of
life through the mirage of climbing a birch tree. With distinctive use of diction, imagery, and
figurative language, Frost manages to indirectly understand his way of perceiving life. His view of the
normality and repetition that exists everyday is hidden within words written.
When seeing Birch trees, bent by the cumbersome snow of the long winter, Frost likes to imagine a
boy s been swinging them (Frost, 3). This is a portrayal of his desire to escape the mundane
characteristics of everyday life, and enjoy himself by imagining the boy riding them down over and
over again (29). Life can be laborious and stressful, and there are always going to be hard
uncertainties that can strain the individual s mind, and using figurative language helps the author show
this by comparing it to a worn branch. Frost shows his internal feelings with, They are ... Show more

The Dark Knight And Inception
There are many successful directors who have produced at least one blockbuster film that is critically
acclaimed, and Christopher Nolan has been able to do this several times. Christopher Nolan began
directing movies in 1998 and has directed fourteen movies since 1998. The film critic Alissa
Wilkinson notes in her article The films of Christopher Nolan, explained, Nolan has shown himself to
be interested in both entertaining audiences and making them think, in pushing the boundaries of what
they believe a movie can and should be . Christopher Nolan also often deals with the subjects of time,
memory, and life philosophies that drive movies and characters. Two of Nolan s most prominent films
through his whole career have been the Dark Knight(2008) and Inception(2010). Both of the films
show how Nolan s movies end ambiguously and how each protagonists in his films has an antagonist
with opposite philosophies and beliefs.
Inception is a film that contains a protagonist and antagonists with opposing philosophical views and
beliefs. The movie includes examples of the belief that the world is real conflicting with the belief that
the world is a dream with death as the only way out. For instance in one part of the movie Dom is
argueing with Mal that they are in the real world as they both stand on the window ledge of opposing
buildings. Mal begs Dom to come with her as she says this world is a dream and that the only way to
wake up is by jumping.Dom tries to tell her that they are

The movie is entitled American Sniper who is Chris Kyle, the hero; however, there is another sniper,
the Arab Mustafa who is the antihero. The American sniper is represented as someone who is clean
and representable. He is a cowboy who had a rough childhood as an excuse for his violent acts. The
Arab sniper on the other hand is a terrorist, someone who is totally uncivilized and who comes from
dirty suburbs. The American sniper is shown as someone who is able to love and care for others and
treat them well; his violent acts are only driven by his big love for his country and the horrible news
he sees on TV. The Arab sniper, however, has no background story; we don t know anything about him
except for his coldhearted executions and bloody actions which lead the audience to imagine that his
wife, sister, and mother might be veiled women carrying grenades beneath their

Best Buy Case Study Essay
BEST BUY In 1966, Richard Shulze opened a small business in St. Paul, Minnesota called Sound of
Music. In the next 17 years Shulze s small store rapidly grew into a multi million dollar outfit. In
1983, Sound of Music changed its name to Best Buy Co., Inc and the first superstore was opened in
Burnsville, Minnesota. With the new name the store also began carrying more name brands,
appliances, VCRs and offering central service and warehouse distribution. Throughout the nineties
Best Buy became pioneers in offering the newest technology such as DVDs and high definition TVs.
In 1999, Best Buy and Microsoft combined to cross promote each other and also offered a two for one
stock split. Now in 2005, almost 40 years after the first store ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Implementation of New Vision It makes sense for Best Buy to worry more about Wal Mart, which is
getting more involved in electronics retailing, and less about Circuit City. The competitors are a
diverse lot today, and for them to continue to grow they re going to have to get much better at
everything they do and define themselves in clear ways. Best Buy s plan is to revamp its stores
according to the types of customers they serve. A strategy previously mentioned, customer centricity,
focuses on targeting five prototypical customers, all of whom have been given names: Jill, a busy
suburban mom; Buzz, a focused, active younger male; Ray, a family man who likes his technology
practical; BB4B (short for Best Buy for Business), a small professional employer; and Barry, an
affluent professional male who s likely to drop tens of thousands of dollars on a home theater system.
Their most current focus is on a Jill based store, the soccer mom who has money to spend but
typically hasn t a clue of where or how to find products in the store. According to the data Best Buy
has collected, Jill shops a few times a year, usually twice at an electronics store, but she usually
spends a significant amount. The Santa Rosa Best Buy, Store #120, is a Jill store. Here is an example
of how they cater to their particular target market. Pink, red and white balloons decorate the entrance.

Speech On Grandparents
Nani and Pop have had many unforgettable and defining moments in our lives together. But becoming
grandparents six times (so far!) is right at the top of the list! We know that you have heard stories
about how excited we were to become your grandparents. I immediately nicknamed myself POP, and
shouted about it to the world. We fell head over heels in love with each of you the moment we met
you, and we couldn t wait to begin sharing adventures with you. And that love grows stronger and
deeper with each passing day.
What a joy it has been for us to watch you all as you have grown, and to see you develop your own
unique personalities. And we hope that you all know how important it is to us to always be here for
you, and to share with you some valuable lessons that will help you as you go through life.
We wish perhaps more than you will ever know that we could promise you a life free from pain,
temptation and suffering. But we know all too well from the personal experiences of living life in this
world that this will not be true for you. You will face many challenges. As a matter of fact, the Bible
tells us that, as Christians, we will be continually engaged in a spiritual battle, that we are at war!
The Apostle Paul tells us (Ephesians 6:13) to take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to
withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. In the next few verses, he describes the
various pieces of armor that God has given Christians to help

Roger Chillingworth Quotes
In chapters 9 and 10, Roger Chillingworth returns and renames himself with a whole new identity. He
made Hester swear to secrecy she wouldn t reveal whom he was. He reintroduces himself to the town
as being a doctor, which was an uncommon profession. Because of the lack of doctors, he was warmly
welcomed and wasn t questioned much. Reverend Dimmesdale is thin and sickly and always clutches
at his chest so Chillingworth becomes his hope for getting better. Though Dimmesdale doesn t believe
medicine can heal him, he caves and agrees to let Chillingworth help him. The two men spend time
together and Chillingworth believes that he should analyze the reverend spiritually, physically, and
mentally in order to cure him. Over time, they think it is a good idea for them ot temporarily move in
together, being that Dimmesdale wasn t married. Some of the townspeople think it is wise but others
start thinking Chillingworth has ugly and evil in his face and that he has changed. Chillingowrth is
dedicated to finding out who committed adultery with Hester. I think this shows shis darker side that
he would do anything to reveal whom his wife cheated on him with. ... Show more content on

Dimmesdale believes that Hester has declared her sins through the scarlet A on her chest and it
relieves her burden. Dimmesdales hidden thoughts, however, seem to be the source of his illness.
Despite this, he doesn t tell anyone and doesn t believe in confessing to an earthly physician and
believes he should only confess to Christ. Chillingworth gets impatient but after they fight, the two
men make up. Later, Dimmesdale falls asleep and Chillingworth goes to his room and lifts his shirt to
reveal something that excites him. To me, his secretive nature reveals his not so positive intentions and
the townspeople rightly suspect him of acting darkly towards the

Describe What Happens When The Bunsen Burner
My first procedure that I completed was the filtration. When I mixed the lead (II) nitrate and the
sodium iodide together, I got a bright yellow liquid that turned out to be lead (II) iodide. I believe I did
this part of the procedure correct because the color was not too pale and I did not use too much lead
(II) nitrate or sodium iodide. I used the correct amount to get the results that were listed on the
laboratory, In procedure D, Glassworking, cutting the glass came out great. I followed all safety
procedures and it snapped perfectly. Although, I could have fire polished the cut glass a little bit more
but could not due to time constraints. A problem I could have had during this procedure is not having

Vincent Van Gogh s Factories At Clichy
From the beginning of time people have created art. While the reasons and methods have changed
over the years, people still observe and try to understand even the oldest pieces of work. After being
assigned to go to the St. Louis Art Museum, I found five different paintings that all involve some form
of oil on either canvas or copper and many different styles. Lovis Corinth Painted Nana, a Female
Nude in 1911, it exhibits the classic female nude which originated in Greece. Even though it is a
classic nude, the woman is not idealized like other paintings. This is probably because Corinth painted
this after the artistic movement which moved the focus of art from the old and traditional styles of the
Renaissance to the modern style of painting and focusing on how the artist interpreted the subject he
was painting. This is an oil on canvas ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His painting is a landscape of a town surrounded by factories as smoke pollutes the air. This painting
is like Corinth s in that it is oil on canvas as well as there are visible brush strokes as Van Gogh paints
what he sees and tries to give the world a glimpse into the world from his perspective. Van Gogh s
color choice is always interesting because everything seems to be from a limited palette. In Factories
at Clichy he uses bright greens and yellows in the grass and it makes the field glow with light and
warmth where the factories and the actual city get darker the further away the town grows. The closer
buildings are bright with bold red roofs which pulls the audiences eyes to the city almost to forget
about the field. While it is difficult to see, there are two small figures in the center of the painting, the
eyes are drawn to them after they meet the focal point of the tallest smoke tower and they follow down
to the two small figures, possible lovers, who are in the field outside of the

Ethical Dilemma of Overshooting Airports
On October 21, 2009 Pilot Timothy Cheney and Co pilot Richard Cole of Northwest Airlines flight
188 had overshot Minneapolis International Airport by 150 miles, which carried 147 passengers
because the pilots had been busy using their laptops. The pilots had only received a slap on the wrists
from the FAA; however their punishment should have been a bit harsher because the lives of everyone
on that flight were put at risk because of irresponsible pilots.

The Northwest Airlines pilots who were grounded after overflying the Minneapolis airport by 150
miles are trying to get their licenses back. National Transportation Safety Board spokesman Ted
Lopatkiewicz said Thursday that Captain Timothy Cheney of Gig Harbor, Washington, and First
Officer Richard Cole of Salem, have filed appeals. The FAA revoked the licenses of the pilots last
month. Cole and Cheney had 10 days to appeal to the three member National Transportation Safety
Board, the same agency that investigates air crashes and makes safety recommendations. If their
appeal fails, they can apply for a new license after one year. The Federal Aviation Administration said
the pilots had violated numerous regulations, including failing to comply with air traffic control
instructions and clearances and operating carelessly and recklessly. But the pilots said they had been
so engrossed in a complicated new crew scheduling program on their laptops a cockpit violation of
airline policy that could cost them their licenses that they lost track of time and place for more than an
hour, until a flight attendant on an intercom got their attention. By then, the Airbus A320 with its 144
passengers and five crew members had cruised on autopilot past its Minneapolis destination and was
over Wisconsin, at 37,000 feet. It turned out the plane s radio was still tuned to a frequency used by
Denver controllers, even though the aircraft had flown beyond

Analysis Of Kay Redfield Jamison s An Unquiet Mind
The prologue of An Unquiet Mind by Kay Redfield Jamison opens with Kay running and is with a
colleague. She explains that as a child she had multiple mood changes and how she is trying to turn
her illness into a beautiful thing. In chapter 1, Kay is playing in the playground when a military jet
crashes into a row of trees. Her father shows signs of manic depression. Kay moves to California with
her family where she feels that she has been taken away to a different world. By the age of 17, she has
her first manic episode. In chapter 2 of Part 1, Kay attends UCLA. During one of her manic episodes,
she has an urge to buy Idylls of the King and buys a dozen books that are all related to it. Kay decides
to buy a horse instead of going to a psychiatrist ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Jamison attends a medical conference and a presentation is made about the discovery of watery
deposits in the brain tissue of manic depressives, which interests her. Jamison begins to ponder her
previous qualms about discussing her illness. She focus on the issues concerning her own
embarrassment, cruelty from her colleagues and friends, and protecting her own family members.
Jamison is grateful for a more balanced life. She is aware of the danger that the slightest mania may
turn into wild insanity that can lead to death. She feels herself a survivor. In the end, Kay poses the
hypothetical question whether or not she would choose to have manic depressive illness, if given the
choice. If lithium was not readily available to her she would say no, but if it was available she said
yes. In Part 4, the explanation of her feelings towards the term bipolar disorder changed my outlook
on the illness.. I understand her qualms about the term implying that there is a distinction between
depression and manic depressive illness. From now on I will refer to the term bipolar disorder as
manic depressive illness. The discovery of watery patches in manic depressives brain tissue was very
interesting. It was rational for Kay to be afraid to share her illness with the world, since it could
change the way people see her. Also, there are endless traumatic possibilities and it is scary to think
that so many disorders go unnoticed. The passages in the memoir flooded me with all kinds of
emotions. It was also interesting to read that she would not give up this illness after all the agony it
brought

Feminist Definition Essay
Feminist
I m in 3rd grade at recess when an older boy comes up to me,
You re too tall and no boy will ever like you.
I m in 5th grade in class when *SNAP* the boy behind be reaches up and flicks the strap of my
training bra.
I m in 8th grade and discovering a new love of black eyeliner, a friend s older brother stands next to
me,
You shouldn t do your makeup like that because boys will think you re fake. .
And when I told an adult?
Boys will be boys. Teacher, Principle, etc.
Feminist. Wow, that s a word with some stigma right? It s a powerful word with a lot of both negative
and positive views. But what does feminism really mean? How about the social, political, and
economical equality of the sexes?
I found out about feminism in Jr High. It is thanks one of my best friends, who helped me make this
discovery, Jayden, I am eternally grateful, and shall be for the rest of my life. If it wasn t for feminism
I wouldn t be able to go to school, or own property, or to even be my own person. I wouldn t have
realized my self worth. I love feminism for the fact that it isn t just for girls, but for all genders.
Feminism is the reason why girls can go to school, own property, be a human being. It helped me
understand the basic right we should have as human beings, equality. Although in many parts of the
world these things are not true, but it is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I know that when something falls apart, it wasn t meant to be. And when I make a decision I am
confident in it, and sure I made the right choice for myself. Feminism is about embracing who you are
and owning it. It is about not letting society s standards get in the way of your happiness. Accepting
yourself and trusting that you can handle whatever life throws your way. It is about having confidence
in your abilities, some of mine are being able to pick up on people s emotions easily, learning new
tasks or jobs rather quickly, exceling in reading and comprehension,

  • 2. Assess The Causes Of Child Poverty Child poverty is not just something that poorer countries have to deal with, it is a world wide issue involving even the richest countries, where the disparity between rich and poor can be worse than in developing countries. This essay will examine some of the key causes of child poverty as well as the impacts on society. The reality of child poverty in the UK is that some families living on a low income and have only about £13 per day per person. (Barnardo s online 2015). With this in mind, many people may well have met, or know, families that are below the UK poverty line. Child poverty is defined as any group of people, or individuals, who are unable, through lack of money, to adequately feed themselves. They may not be able to afford suitable clothing or provide themselves with suitable heated accommodation. Child poverty can cause serious problems for children. For those in poverty it means being cold, hungry and often not being able to join activities with friends or activities that cost money, such as bowling, going to the cinema, swimming or other interests and pursuits. In addition, 60% of families on the lower incomes cannot afford to take their children on holiday for one week a year. (Child Poverty Action Group online 2015). ... This would include necessities, like food and transport, but also all household bills such as electricity, gas and water, as well as telephone and TV licence. This money would also include school trips and any activities for the children. (Barnardo s online ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Role Of The Railroads Shifted Over Time The role of the railroads shifted over time. Eight months after the United States entered the First World War in 1918, President Woodrow Wilson called for the country s railroads to be nationalized to mean the demands of the war. He did so under the Federal Possession and Control Act. As part of this process, he also decided to have new steam engines and cars designed to boost the abilities of the rail industry. He also arranged for the Railroad Control Act which took place in 1920. This act stated that when a peace treaty was signed, within 21 months, the railroads would be returned to their owners and compensation would be given for use of property. This did occur and the railroads were returned to private property. Railroads not ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This allows the industry to be better connected and function as a whole to allow for best productivity, volume, revenue, and rates. Ultimately, the history of the rail industry was build one person at a time as they discovered and implemented a connection that would advance the industry. However, there were some key individuals who greatly influenced the process. As previously mentioned, Colonel John Stevens was an influential individual as he was a spark towards the first American railroad. Another instrumental individual was James Hill. Hill is known for his expansion of the railroads. He was a U.S. and Canadian railroad executive. He owned and grew the Great Northern Railway Company, and he also added additional companies. Jay Gould was another influential railroad executive. He is best known for his work as a financer and developer of projects in the rail industry. The influential people are not limited to only rails though. Cornelius Vanderbilt was known for his part in the shipping industry as a whole. He started out with a steamboat company, moved into steamships, and then expanded to include railroads. He also implemented the first service rail between New York and Chicago. In the same way, there are some principal companies who serve as fundamental pieces of the industry today. These main companies are referred to as Class 1 Railroads. In order for a railroad to be classified as Class 1 it must have an operating revenue of $433.2 million or more. There are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Big Brother is the ultimate power holder and the Party is his face. There were numerous of ways on how the Party had control over its citizens. For instance, they had control over the information and history, control over the citizen lives, and families. Power played a big role in the society of 1984. The Party controlled every source of information in 1984. They managed and rewrote the content of all newspapers and histories for their own sake. • 5. My Goals In My Life The big question, What do I want to do with my life? floats through my mind more and more often as graduation approaches. I have many goals and ambitions I wish to achieve after high school, but deciding something as important as what career I should pursue has brought me much uneasiness. These past few months I have struggled to figure out what I am truly passionate about; however, as I mature I begin to find so much fulfillment in helping others, both mentally and physically. Growing up with a sizable family is one of my most wonderful blessings. My family and the environment that I have grown up in has had a tremendous impact on who I am and who I aspire to be. Both of my parents immigrated from Mexico and became residents approximately twenty five years ago. Neither of them graduated high school for distinct reasons. My dad now works diligently to provide for us and my mom takes care of the house and our needs. They have taught me to put others before myself and have shaped me into who I am today. My loved ones are one of my biggest inspirations. I strive to show them the person I can become and the impact that I can have on others. Ever since I was a small child, I was fascinated with animals and every aspect of nature. For the longest time, I believed I would aim to go into a field of animal science/research. As I grow into my own skin I have begun to find different passions within me. Leadership and service have taken a great role in my high school life and both ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. The Musgrave Ritual Analysis For Sherlock Holmes, solving mysteries is more than just a mindless hobby; to Holmes, solving mysteries is a necessity to survive. In The Musgrave Ritual, Watson describes that during stagnant periods of no mysteries, Holmes shoots bullets into the walls to pass time, Holmes in one of his queer humours would sit in an arm chair, with his hair trigger and a hundred Boxer cartridges, and proceed to adorn the opposite wall with a patriotic V.R. done in bullet pocks (Doyle 227). Holmes brain requires exercise and attention, without mysteries, he is overwhelmed with anxiety and practically driven to the brink of insanity. In the Scandal in Bohemia, Holmes was not upset that he had not brought Irene Adler to justice in the respect originally planned, but he was upset at the fact that she had outsmarted him (Doyle 122). For Holmes, defeat had been unheard of. Moreover, in The Speckled Band, Helen Stoner offers Holmes money for his labors but he replies, as to reward, my profession is its reward (Doyle 205) implying that he is not looking for money, but instead his next puzzle to solve. Therefore, although he has the ability to collect monetary compensation, he is simply in it for the puzzle. Furthermore, upon the death of Dr. Grimesby Roylott, Holmes states, I am no doubt indirectly responsible for [his] death, and I cannot say that it is likely to weigh very heavily upon my conscience (226). • 9. Coming Of Age Throughout Mississippi By Anne Moody Coming of Age in Mississippi Essay Fredric Stanley HIST 3881 Professor James Conway 7 November 2015 Though we Americans, in all of our efforts, feel as if the day of racism is coming to an end, I feel it is merely evolving into a much more subtle approach. Seeing life through the words of Anne Moody in her book entitled, Coming of Age in Mississippi , shows that racism, even back then, is treated with remedies versus a cure. After the many anti discrimination legislations passed as well as activist groups shedding light on all of the significant differences and injustices that African Americans face, one would think that by now racism would be far behind us here in America. After a close review of Anne Moody s life, her growing up ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Anne Moody saw the true hideousness of racial violence shortly after beginning high school. Emmet Till was killed by a group of white men for merely whistling and showing interest in a white woman. Anne was surprised at how unaware she was to the things happening around her. I don t remember if anyone was murdered, but back when I was in high school it was almost as if whites viewed it to be cardinal sin for an African American male to be with a white woman. This too was a time where I saw the true reality of what it was to be an African American versus a White American. Anne s mother informed her to continue throughout life as if nothing happened but understandably she couldn t. While working Anne could not focus and her rage began to display. Mrs. Burke made an attempt to talk to Anne concerning Emmet Till s death but Anne acted as if she didn t know what Mrs. Burke was speaking of. Mrs. Burke told her that that is what happens when black people step out of place with whites. It was at that point Anne began to fear for her life now learning the true outlook of being an African American. I see on a daily basis where African Americans accept injustice and move on with life as if it doesn t matter. Instead of standing in the gap for what could very well hit home African Americans tend to turn a blind eye to the corruption and cruelty we face. So many times within the work force we, African Americans, are reminded where we stand in the eye of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The way I think, speak, and even the way I eat and breathe is totally different because of yoga. Yoga has changed just about everything about me, but it has ruined me in three big ways: 1. Response versus Reaction There was a time in my life that I didn t really think about things. I didn t think before I spoke. I didn t think before I made big decisions, like what colleges to apply for. I didn t really question anything either. I was OK with whatever life path I was on. Yoga kicked and scratched and bruised my ego. It put me in my place on more than on occasion and force fed me some humble pie. It made me care about other people. Yoga led me to Kula for Karma, and then I realized how important seva and volunteering are. Now I can t imagine a life without them. As mentioned earlier, it made me think before I spoke... And in those thoughts, other people s feelings and circumstances came up. I found myself forgiving people and praying for people rather than threatening people and pulling hair. Page Keeton Symposium on Tort Law MIXED THEORIES OF TORT LAW: AFFIRMING BOTH DETERRENCE AND CORRECTIVE JUSTICE Gary T. Schwartza Copyright (c) 1997 Texas Law Review Association; Gary T. Schwartz Introduction Currently there are two major camps of tort scholars. One understands tort liability as an instrument aimed largely at the goal of deterrence, commonly explained within the framework of economics. The other looks at tort law as a way of achieving corrective justice between the parties. If these are alternative camps, they are also to a large measure unfriendly camps: much of the time each treats the other with neglect or even derision. The development of each scholarly ... In the early 1970s, the work of Guido Calabresi15 and Richard Posner16 precipitated what has proved to be an explosion of scholarship analyzing tort law in economic terms and emphasizing deterrence as a primary tort objective.17 One major school of legal economists claims that economics provides a splendid and nearly complete account of the body of tort doctrine.18 *1804 As it happens, deterrence had not played a significant role in traditional tort scholarship. When Landes and Posner expounded their theory of deterrence as a basic tort objective, they reviewed the record of early tort writings to determine what support they could find for this theory; they ended up merely reporting that with the benefit of hindsight, it is possible to find . . . prefigurings of the modern economic approach in Holmes s chapters on tort law and ... • 12. Symbolism In Dr Jekyll And Mr Hyde The short fictional novel The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde tells the tale of a dedicated London lawyer named Gabriel Utterson who searches for truth after a close friend of his named Henry Jekyll, gradually spirals downward, committing unspeakable acts of violence and depravity following his first ingestion of a mystical potion. Utterson must uncover the buried secrets kept by the withdrawn doctor and childhood friend before it is too late, while also investigating the puzzling murder of a respected senator and former client of his. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Hyde s physical appearance, the symbolism of the lab connecting to Dr. Jekyll s home, and the symbolism of the mystical potion taken by Dr. Jekyll all help convey the powerful themes that transcend the book. First and foremost, Mr. Hyde s physical appearance described by those that have seen him commit horrible atrocities signifies his alternate or dual personality as he crosses societal boundaries. Transformed from a tall, revered and affluent doctor, to a shorter hairier uglier looking figure, Dr Jekyll represents the part of society most of us try to embrace while his more nefarious counterpart represents the greatest fears of society a killer without a motive who feels euphoric and rejuvenated after slaying innocent prey. The lab that connects Dr. Jekyll s home to his lab also allows readers to acknowledge the vastly different personalities that a person may have. After having its door broken down, this same lab illustrates that secrets cannot be kept indefinitely, especially those that regard personality and there will eventually come a time when a victor is chosen between the aforementioned good and evil combating inside an individual s head. The potion that is discovered to have helped transform Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde could represent a plethora of external and internal catalysts. Today, substances like drugs and alcohol may have a similar effect to the potion taken by Dr. Jekyll. Internal factors like greed and gluttony could also symbolize the potion s effect on the mind and body. Many of the listed substances don t create something that isn t already there; rather they expose our conscious and subconscious desires and in some cases amplify them. This is where genetics and natural, inherent proclivities come into play, making certain behavior like smoking and drinking enticing. These can sometimes reveal our true nature. In the Geographic (or Ecological) Axiom, Lewis (1979, 24) argues that studying a landscape outside its location makes no sense in gaining cultural insight on the landscape. Don Mitchell (2007, 43) in New Axioms for the Landscape, presents the idea that the shape of the land provides direction to its social life. The Nobility In The Canterbury Tales Kensi Laube Professor Parrish British Literature I 15 September 2017 Thinking Piece #5 Chaucer s Canterbury Tales: The General Prologue portrays the newly formed social division in Medieval England by having people from the noble, gentry, church, and working social groups come together on a journey to the Canterbury Chapel. A modern day American version of this poem would also include a diverse group of people. The nobility in The Canterbury Tales is represented by the knight, which Chaucer describes as loving, trouthe and honour, freedom and curteisye (46). Despite being poor, the parson in The Canterbury Tales displayed a hardworking and caring demeanor. Chaucer further explains the parson s character by mentioning, that first he wroughte, and afterward he taught (499). The parson s involvement in society can be mirrored by not only modern day preachers and church leaders, but by teachers as well. Teachers take the knowledge from their education and convey this wisdom onto students, much like the parson. The qualities of today s working class can be seen through Chaucer s depiction of the plowman. Indicating the importance and humility of the plowman s work, Chaucer establishes his significance in society. Our farmers, factory workers, and construction workers show the same persistent work ethic as the plowman, which exemplifies that they are the foundation of the American society. However, some principles are used widely in TV shows or movies. For example, classical conditioning can make people to perform a specific behavior after several times training . In the essay, the author will introduce a TV show called A Bite of China and discuss how the TV show use classical conditioning. Background information Classical Conditioning Classical Conditioning was founded by a Russian physiologist, Ivan P. Pavlov, in the early 1900s. At first, He assumed that animals have automatic connections called unconditioned reflexes, which is a reflection between a fixed stimulus and response such as the food and secreting digestive juices. He speculated that the stimulus can be transferred from one to another. After that, Pavlov did the experiments and get the conclusion. In the process, he gave a dog food and the dog salivated. The connection between the food and the salivation was automatic requiring no training. The food was called unconditioned stimulus (UCS) and the salivation was called unconditioned response (UCR). The UCS is an event that automatically elicits an UCR. In other words, the UCR is the action that the UCS elicits. Next, Pavlov introduced a new stimulus, such as a metronome. At the beginning, the dogs heard the metronome but did not salivate. In this period, the metronome was a neutral stimulus (NS) about salivation. After ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Every word was placed after agonized deliberation and if a theme appears to be reoccurring, it is because Joyce assigned deeper meaning than a cursory read of the word may suggest. Both in the beginning chapter of The Telemachiad and the initial chapter of Part II, Calypso , Joyce leaves the protagonists keyless Stephen Dedalus hands the key to his tower to Buck Mulligan and Leopold Bloom chose to leave home without his key as to not disturb his wife. Echoing this sentiment, when the milkwoman arrives in Telemachus , she is more concerned with Mulligan, the medical student, than Stephen, the artist. Stephen, who sees the milkwoman as representing the greater ideals of Ireland, his home, is disillusioned by this reality. So, we see that Stephen is neither accepted by the people that surround him nor the society he is surrounded by. • 38. How Does Frost Use Figurative Language In Birches The poem, Birches written by Robert Frost, depicts author s personal desire to escape the normality of life through the mirage of climbing a birch tree. With distinctive use of diction, imagery, and figurative language, Frost manages to indirectly understand his way of perceiving life. His view of the normality and repetition that exists everyday is hidden within words written. When seeing Birch trees, bent by the cumbersome snow of the long winter, Frost likes to imagine a boy s been swinging them (Frost, 3). This is a portrayal of his desire to escape the mundane characteristics of everyday life, and enjoy himself by imagining the boy riding them down over and over again (29). Life can be laborious and stressful, and there are always going to be hard uncertainties that can strain the individual s mind, and using figurative language helps the author show this by comparing it to a worn branch. The realizations he infers show what he thinks life truly is; for him life is too much like a pathless wood, / where your face burns and tickles with the cobwebs (44 45). That is the reason for his wild imagination, it is an escape from reality for him. Going to the top, climbing the tree, can help find the a route through the pathless wood . Frost s imagination is what feeds his happiness, it is what separates the norm with the abnormalities. However, he knows that life is like a play, carefully constructed and set for a reason; the author acknowledges this, May no fate willfully misunderstand me / And half grant what I wish and snatch me away / Not to return. Earth s the right place for love (50 53). At the end of Birches , the author comes to a resolution; that though sometimes life can be difficult, it could be a lot worse, That could be good both going and coming back. / One could do worse than being a swinger of birches ... The Dark Knight And Inception There are many successful directors who have produced at least one blockbuster film that is critically acclaimed, and Christopher Nolan has been able to do this several times. Christopher Nolan began directing movies in 1998 and has directed fourteen movies since 1998. The film critic Alissa Wilkinson notes in her article The films of Christopher Nolan, explained, Nolan has shown himself to be interested in both entertaining audiences and making them think, in pushing the boundaries of what they believe a movie can and should be . Christopher Nolan also often deals with the subjects of time, memory, and life philosophies that drive movies and characters. Two of Nolan s most prominent films through his whole career have been the Dark Knight(2008) and Inception(2010). Both of the films show how Nolan s movies end ambiguously and how each protagonists in his films has an antagonist with opposite philosophies and beliefs. Inception is a film that contains a protagonist and antagonists with opposing philosophical views and beliefs. The movie includes examples of the belief that the world is real conflicting with the belief that the world is a dream with death as the only way out. For instance in one part of the movie Dom is argueing with Mal that they are in the real world as they both stand on the window ledge of opposing buildings. Mal begs Dom to come with her as she says this world is a dream and that the only way to wake up is by jumping.Dom tries to tell her that they are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Best Buy s plan is to revamp its stores according to the types of customers they serve. We know that you have heard stories about how excited we were to become your grandparents. I immediately nicknamed myself POP, and shouted about it to the world. We fell head over heels in love with each of you the moment we met you, and we couldn t wait to begin sharing adventures with you. And that love grows stronger and deeper with each passing day. What a joy it has been for us to watch you all as you have grown, and to see you develop your own unique personalities. And we hope that you all know how important it is to us to always be here for you, and to share with you some valuable lessons that will help you as you go through life. We wish perhaps more than you will ever know that we could promise you a life free from pain, temptation and suffering. But we know all too well from the personal experiences of living life in this world that this will not be true for you. You will face many challenges. Reverend Dimmesdale is thin and sickly and always clutches at his chest so Chillingworth becomes his hope for getting better. Though Dimmesdale doesn t believe medicine can heal him, he caves and agrees to let Chillingworth help him. The two men spend time together and Chillingworth believes that he should analyze the reverend spiritually, physically, and mentally in order to cure him. Over time, they think it is a good idea for them ot temporarily move in together, being that Dimmesdale wasn t married. Some of the townspeople think it is wise but others start thinking Chillingworth has ugly and evil in his face and that he has changed. While the reasons and methods have changed over the years, people still observe and try to understand even the oldest pieces of work. After being assigned to go to the St. Louis Art Museum, I found five different paintings that all involve some form of oil on either canvas or copper and many different styles. Lovis Corinth Painted Nana, a Female Nude in 1911, it exhibits the classic female nude which originated in Greece. Even though it is a classic nude, the woman is not idealized like other paintings. Van Gogh s color choice is always interesting because everything seems to be from a limited palette. In Factories at Clichy he uses bright greens and yellows in the grass and it makes the field glow with light and warmth where the factories and the actual city get darker the further away the town grows. The closer buildings are bright with bold red roofs which pulls the audiences eyes to the city almost to forget about the field. The Northwest Airlines pilots who were grounded after overflying the Minneapolis airport by 150 miles are trying to get their licenses back. National Transportation Safety Board spokesman Ted Lopatkiewicz said Thursday that Captain Timothy Cheney of Gig Harbor, Washington, and First Officer Richard Cole of Salem, have filed appeals. The FAA revoked the licenses of the pilots last month. Cole and Cheney had 10 days to appeal to the three member National Transportation Safety Board, the same agency that investigates air crashes and makes safety recommendations. If their appeal fails, they can apply for a new license after one year. The Federal Aviation Administration said the pilots had violated numerous regulations, including failing to comply with air traffic control instructions and clearances and operating carelessly and recklessly. But the pilots said they had been so engrossed in a complicated new crew scheduling program on their laptops a cockpit violation of airline policy that could cost them their licenses that they lost track of time and place for more than an hour, until a flight attendant on an intercom got their attention. By then, the Airbus A320 with its 144 passengers and five crew members had cruised on autopilot past its Minneapolis destination and was over Wisconsin, at 37,000 feet.
