Chemical Oxygen Demand ( B.o )
31. Biological Oxygen Demand ( B.O.D)
Introduction:
Biochemical Oxygen Demand (B.O.D.) is the most important parameter to determine the level of
pollution in lakes and streams, their self purification capacities, assess the biodegradable organic load
of the wastewaters for designing wastewater management or treatment plants and thereafter to
evaluate their efficiency or finding out the assimilative capacity of a water body. B.O.D. is an
empirical standardized laboratory test defined as the amount of oxygen required for the aerobic
decomposition of the organic matter by micro organisms into stable inorganic forms at a given
controlled condition of time and temperature in water. The quantity of oxygen required for above ...

The greater the B.O.D., the more rapidly oxygen is depleted in the stream which means less oxygen is
available to higher aquatic forms of life. As a consequence organisms that are more tolerant of lower
dissolved oxygen levels may replace a diversity of more sensitive organisms.
A. Titrimetric method
Principle
The B.O.D. test is based on mainly bio assay procedure, which measure the dissolved oxygen
consumed by micro organisms while assimilating and oxidizing the organic matter under aerobic
condition. This test measures the oxygen utilized for the biochemical degradation of organic material
(carbonaceous demand) and oxidation of inorganic material such as sulphides and ferrous ions during
a specified incubation period. It also measures the oxygen used to oxidize reduced forms of nitrogen
(nitrogenous demand) unless their oxidation is prevented by an inhibitor. Temperature effects are held
constant by performing a test at fixed temperature. The methodology of B.O.D. test is to compute a
difference between initial and final D.O. of the samples incubation. Atleast 1.5 L of sample is required
to perform the B.O.D. test. D.O. is estimated by iodometric or Winkler s method titration. Since the
test being a bio assay procedure, it is necessary to provide standard conditions of temperature, nutrient
supply, pH (6.5 7.5), adequate population of microorganisms and absence of microbial growth
inhibiting substances. The low

Influence Of Art In The Renaissance Art
Art is a skill that not everyone can grasp, however even in the Italian Renaissance, some people had
this great gift. Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael are three great examples of artists who
had a talent which would influence the art we do today. Leonardo da Vinci was a great painter in the
Renaissance. He was one of the key figures in the Renaissance. Two of his paintings are the most
famous paintings ever made. These are the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper. Leonardo had many
interests besides art. He studied Anatomy, astronomy, botany, geology, geometry, and optics. Leonardo
was raised in Vinci Italy. The meaning of da Vinci is from Vinci . Leonardo da Vinci was born on
April 14, 1452 and died on May 2, 1519. One skill that Leonardo had was observing. Leonardo was an
apprentice to Andrea del Verrocchio. When his apprenticeship was completed, he stayed with Andrea
del Verrocchio as an assistant. They made a painting together in 1472. From 1478 to 1482 Leonardo
had his own studio. This studio was located in Florence Italy. Leonardo used his drawings to help him
with observations, creation, and inventions. Leonardo da Vinci was always interested in mechanics.
Leonardo had an incredible scientific mind. In fact, in the Italian Renaisance, he had one of the
greatest scientific mind. Although he had an incredible mind for science, his importance in art was far
greater than his importance in science.
A lot of Leonardo s designs were way ahead of their time, some of

Provide An Example Of Three Scales At Which Ecology Can Be...
What is ecology? Provide an example of 3 scales at which ecology can be applied? Name one field of
study which is associated with ecology?
Ecology is the scientific study of the interactions that determine distribution and abundance of
organisms. Ecology can be studied at various levels, three examples of these levels are; Individual
level, Population, and Community. Behavioural ecology is one of many areas which is connected to
ecological study.
1. Week 1, Lecture: Measuring species distributions.
When determining the distribution of eg Pine trees on a large island. What sampling method does
needs to be used, ensuring the scientific method is adhered to. (Assuming that a count of every
individual cannot be sampled and it is a homogenous substrate.)
To adhere to the scientific method there would need to ensure that there isn t any sampling bias. The
simplest method is random sampling. The quadrats would need to be mapped out and cover the entire
island points which are generate that fall outside of the target area can be ignored. The quadrats wold
need to be of a size relative to the size of the entire island as it could affect the distribution results
(random, uniform and clumped/aggregated). Once the data is collected various statistical analysis can
be performed then inferences about its distribution can be made.
2. Week 2, Lecture: Distribution, dispersal, and abundance.
Who are the three Men who influenced the way people understand the ecological niche. Compare and

Critical Analysis Of Higuchi Ichiyo s The Thirteenth Night
The shift in ideals of femininity is what accounts for Oseki s plight in The Thirteenth Night. Her story
indicates that her son (Taro) s birth was what led to Isamu s sudden transformation. His abusive
behavior centers on her being a woman without education (Higuchi and Tanaka, 1960, p.382). The fact
that he mocks Oseki for being too stupid to confide in , and that he is keeping [her] in his house
merely as wet nurse for Taro is significant Oseki s lack of education is perceived to have rendered her
completely incapable of performing the roles of wife and mother as defined by Meiji society (Higuchi
and Tanaka, 1960, p.383). This is in spite of how she was brought up in a time when education for
girls was not considered necessary, and that Isamu had been informed of her background when he
courted her. Speculated to have climbed the social ladder through academic achievements, Isamu is
the quintessential self made man , an established literary type and embodiment of modernity ... Show

Not only was Oseki s experience telling of the constructed nature of feminine ideals and gender roles,
it also served to highlight the objectification and commodification of women within male dominated
networks of expectations and ideologies. While Higuchi herself was not pushing for any feminist aims
explicitly, the end result of eliciting the reader s critique of the Meiji Japanese society makes The
Thirteenth Night a crucial work in reflecting the gender issues then. Higuchi s use of Classical
Japanese in her writing could also be seen as a deliberate attempt to carve out a uniquely feminine
sphere within the male literary sphere and challenge male hegemonic writing practices. As such, the
Classical Japanese that Higuchi employs in her writing can be interpreted as a feminine language as

The Ponzi Scheme versus the Madoff Scheme
Schneeweis Szado (2010, p.9) suggested that ffinancial fraud in general and Ponzi schemes in
particular continue to maneuver investors. A Ponzi scheme is frequently described as a securities fraud
in which the investment manager is in fact taking money from new investors to fund redemptions
from current investors. These strategies are often discovered when new investors cannot be found to
offset redemptions from current investors. The Ponzi method received its name from Charles Ponzi,
who marketed an investment based on managing the International Postal Reply Coupons. Ponzi
suggested that an arbitrage opportunity existed because he could exchange U.S. dollars into the
necessary foreign currency, and use the foreign currency to purchase postal reply coupons. The postal
reply coupons could be redeemed for U.S. postage stamps, which could then be sold for U.S. dollars.
Ponzi promoted unusually high returns to investors when in fact he simply used the new investment to
pay of the previous investors. While the scheme soon collapsed, there are similarities between him and
the Madoff scheme. For example, Madoff sold primarily to the Jewish community and also Ponzi sold
primarily to the immigrant community of the North End of Boston, to which he belonged. Along with
that, the validity of Madoff s strategy was a subject argued by the public press (Barron s) as well as by
individuals (Markopolus) on the grounds. Comparable to Ponzi s investors, Madoff s investors, have

The War On The World
Fundamentally speaking, warfare is the means by which human society has been organized. The
modern world is divided up into a number of states whose sovereignty is based either on the results of
warfare or the threat of warfare. The ability of a states to wage and win wars is what determines the
geopolitical pecking order. Those who cannot hope to win wars alone pursue policies and deals that
ensure the intervention of more capable states in their defense, should one come about. Domestic
policies and cultural developments, as well, are understood as wars: at this very moment, there is a
War on Drugs, a War on Terror, a War on Women, a War on Poverty, even an alleged War on
Christmas. Indeed, the uneasy peace that exists between the world s current superpowers is a result of
the expected outcome of Nuclear War. The nature of war, being so essential to the shape and nature of
the world we live in, must be understood. To aid us in our own understanding of war, we can benefit
tremendously from exploring the ways in which war was practiced, understood, and experienced by
our cultural and ideological progenitors, the Greeks and Romans of Classical Antiquity. Classical
Greek warfare can be best understood through the manner in which it was practiced: hoplite warfare.
Hoplite warfare was communitarian, strictly organized and ritualistic. This particular style of combat
shaped and was shaped by the culture in which it developed. In a traditional hoplite battle, men armed

Budweiser Commercial Analysis
If you were to watch the Budweiser commercial called, Puppy Love, from start to finish you would
have no idea that this commercial is to advertise beer. At the end of the commercial the screen does
say Budweiser. Consequently you would allegedly assume the commercial was about adopting a
puppy if it were not to say Budweiser; unless you analyzed further into the commercial. This
advertisement is directed towards people that are age twenty one or older in the US, they must have a
taste for beer, and maybe more specifically Budweiser. Anyone that watches this would recognize that
in the United States, we have a law that you cannot drink alcohol under the age of twenty one.
Nevertheless, this commercial may be aired across the world we also need to place in mind that a few
countries have different laws regarding the drinking age. It is directed towards people who adore beer
for the obvious reasons of having an interest in the taste of beer to drink it as well as the brand
Budweiser. People that do not drink may not care for this commercial at all, meaning the majority of
the people that do care to drink beer would appreciate this commercial. The commercial does not

With that statement, the puppy, horse, and beer are emphasized. Mainly the puppy and the horses due
to the fact that the horses and puppy are in the entire commercial, and even though the beer does not

Coach Chet s Effect On The Greenwave Girls
Chance at Revenge
Being in sports can be both challenging and rewarding at times. Being brutally defeated can make you
feel like you re at rock bottom, while winning a championship game can make you feel as if you re on
the top of the world. This is a story about a basketball team who finally stepped up to their biggest
rival of all, showing the other team and themselves that anything is possible.
The East Grand Forks (EGF) Greenwave Girls basketball team had been playing basketball together
since first grade, plus or minus a few players. The majority of them played for the love of the game,
no matter if they win or lose. They were no all star team that destroyed and dominated every opponent
they took on; just an average team with wins and losses scattered around the grid. There was one team
in particular that the Greenwave girls could never compete with, and they lived in the same city. The
Sacred Heart Eagles. Beginning in first grade, this team had never struggled to beat ... Show more

Their coach was Chet Carnivale. Coach Chet had been making a big impact on the Greenwave girls. It
was late January, early February; the middle of the basketball season, and their record was 22 0. They
couldn t believe they were undefeated. Taking on Sacred Heart at 4:30, the Greenwave girls would
compete to win the championship game in the Sacred Heart Tournament. Time had flown by. The
sound of basketballs bouncing and the squeaking of basketball shoes burning rubber on the floor
meant that it was almost game time. The Greenwave girls were extremely anxious. Coach Chet had
sparked a new confidence in them, and their anxiety and fear quickly turned into anger and
determination to give their long time enemy a taste of their own medicine. Somehow, the fear of
destroying their record and losing a chance at revenge still lingered in the back of their minds. All of a

Comparing Phaedrus, An Education, And The Descent Of Man
The nature of human desires and behaviors is a questionable and highly critiqued idea. Human desires
and behaviors are extremely important to the lives of humans, and other kinds of life. Desires and
behaviors are found in every living being, to a certain extent. Desires, along with behaviors, are a
crucial part to life itself. This aspect implemented in different forms of life plays a large role in critical
thinking and decision making. Phaedrus, An Education, O Brother, Where Art Thou, Gulliver s
Travels, and The Descent of Man explore and exemplify different ways desire and behavior affect the
thought and decision making process. In the movie, An Education, the main character, Jenny, faces
many trials and tribulations that young adults encounter. She feels the pressures and expectations to
receive a quality education; however, she is not truly satisfied with that alone. As soon as an older,
wealthy man, who was full of adventure, entered her life, everything she had previously thought was
her destiny was now entirely questionable. As humans, we have a tendency to chase adventure and all
things that excite us. Socrates would describe this tendency as one of the principles humans are ruled
by. This need for fun and adventure is our inborn desire for pleasures (Plato, 1995, p. 17). This is one
of two principles that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Weather And Mood In The Painted Door By Sinclair Ross
Within stories weather can often be personified in order to reflect and enhance the mood or tone of the
story. Certain weather indicates certain moods, this can help visually enhance the story for the reader
and provide extra context for analysis. In the short story The Painted Door by Sinclair Ross, the author
demonstrates the idea that if both of those in a marriage are not fully committed it could lead to
discontent for all, and how environmental issues could play a part in this. The storm within the story is
used to represent Ann s anxiety about whether her husband will come home or not; and as the story

Proving that pathetic fallacy is a strong literary technique in enhancing the tone or mood of a story, it
also within this story shows how John might not be fully committed to his partner. Not in the sense of
loyalty, but how he only cares for her physical well being and does not take time to think about her
mental health. Another factor of Ann s mental health being affected is that she is in isolation, she had
thought that she would be okay, as she has been a farmer s wife for seven years and being alone for a
lot of it, however this time was different. Ann feels like she is being held captive in her own house,
and because of the storm she is unable to leave the house. Her isolation ultimately leads to the
decision to cheat on her husband, which has the repercussion of her husband killing himself in order to
never have to confront her about this. The purpose of Steven coming over was to visit Ann to make

Becoming A Licensed Practical Nurse
Becoming a Licensed Practical Nurse Becoming a Licensed Practical Nurse is something I decided to
wanted to do while working as a Certified Nursing Assistant. It is a very fulfilling experience. Caring
for others is something that takes patience, hard work, sympathy, and education. Licensed Practical
Nurses provide a number of services and have many duties. Most duties are supervised under a
Register Nurse or a doctor. Some duties include measuring vital signs, maintaining patient records,
dressing wounds, helping with personal hygiene just to name a few things. The duties of a LPN vary
from state to state. There are many career options available for LPNs. Many LPNs start their careers in
nursing homes for the elderly. This is because environments such as hospitals like to see long term
care experience on a LPN s resume. Some LPNs do in home care services. This is when the LPN goes
to the patient s home and takes care of what they need in the privacy of their own home. You ll find
LPNs working in a hospital setting often as well doing many tasks and working in different
departments. Doctor s offices have LPNs working for them as well. There are many different routes a
LPN can go in their field. The daily routine for a LPN usually goes as follows. First, they make sure
they get to work with enough time before their shift begins to go over the charts made by the previous
LPN to catch up on what s been going on with the patients. After checking the charts they will start

American Involvement In Ww2
Although the U.S. had yet to become officially involved in the war, most Americans supported the
Allies and saw the Germans as antagonists. Americans felt a connection to Great Britain, in particular,
because of cultural similarities. When the Germans sunk the Lusitania, a British cruise ship, in 1915,
128 Americans were among those who lost their lives, causing America to become even angrier
towards the Germans. At the same time, the British intercepted a message from Germany to Mexico
called the Zimmerman Note, asking the government of Mexico to declare war on the U.S. if war broke
out between the U. S. and Germany. The note also promised to help Mexico regain the territory of
Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico if Mexico declared war on the United States. This note was the final
push that caused America to fall into the want of war. Thus, on April 6, 1917, the U.S. Congress
declared war on Germany. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Rhode Island Hospital Meeting Summary
On December 8, 2015 I attended a meeting at Rhode Island Hospital with Lou Sperling, Matthew
Taibi and Matthew Maini concerning the Trustees resolution to develop a RFP for EAP Services. The
meeting convened at 9:05am. Lou indicated the RIH has conducted two (2) RFP s for similar services
and wound up sticking with the same provider, Coastline EAP. Matt Taibi proposed combining EAP
services with the broader responsibilities of a member advocate, who would have Social Work skills.
Matt Maini agreed. The Trustees agreed the duties would be regional in scope rather than limited to
Rhode Island. Lou indicated that the RIHEAP Program goes well beyond substance abuse, and Mr.
Taibi agreed that that is what he has in mind for HSIP. He indicated at a staff level, HSIP could still

responses to advertising and self admissions. Lou indicated the EAP should ask for the specific

What Is The Moral Of The Story By Bruno Bettelheim
Moral of the Story: Analyzation of Fairy Tales Fairy tales have been around and retold for hundreds of
years, ranging from enticing situations and imperative morals to teach and warn people of all ages.
Many have overlooked the underlying message of these beloved tales and deem them to be farfetched,
but these stories are critical to child development. On the Telling of Fairy Stories written by Bruno
Bettelheim, the strong belief presents the notion that verbally exclaiming fairy tales leaves a lasting
impact on adolescent minds well into adulthood. During the early development stages, the telling of
fairy tales educates children how to grasp the meaning and the power of storytelling. Each narrator, as
he told the story, dropped and added elements to make it more meaningful whom he knew well...
narrator let his unconscious understanding of what the story told be influenced by that of a child (150).
A narrator s purpose is to carry and determine the story through their eyes, what they see is exactly
what the reader sees as readers do not know anything that the author does not know. Each narrator
varies their stylistic approach to the story at large, and the best ones tailor it to the audience it affects.
Especially regarding children, the story should be illustrated in a way where it is appealing to them
and comprehensive to their minds. In this way, concepts can be accepted and digested, but also
understood in their respective way. For example, the excerpt provided a

Friederich Nietzsche and His Philosophies Essay
Friederich Nietzsche and His Philosophies
Friederich Nietzsche was born in 1844 in the Prussian province of Saxony. He was the offspring of a
long line of clergymen including his father, who was the pastor of a Lutheran congregation. His
childhood was consumed with the haunting death of his father and, soon after, brother. After enrolling
in school, he suffered from intense, painful headaches and myopia which caused burning sensations
and blurred vision. This may have been syphilis and it may have been contracted from his father who
had shown similar symptoms. In 1858, he enrolled in the prestigious Pforte boarding school. His
illness continued to plague him, resulting in several pilgrimages to the sanitarium yet, he was able ...

However, even Nietzsche s critics admit that his words hold an undeniable truth, as hard as it is to
accept. Perhaps this is why his work is timeless, and has survived 150 years in print. Christianity God
is Dead! announced Zarathustra (better known as Zoroaster), in Neitzsche s book, Thus Spoke
Zarathustra (1883 1885). Unlike many philosophers, Nietzsche never tried to prove or disprove the
existence of God, just that belief in God can create sickness; and to convince that highest
achievements in human life depend on elimination of God. Whether God existed had no relevance in
his goal. Proclamation of the death of God was a fundamental ingredient in the values Nietzsche
advocated. Nothing has done more than Christianity to entrench the morality of mediocrity in human
consciousness. Christian love extols qualities of weakness; it causes guilt. Charity is just teaching
hatred and revenge directed toward nobility. Belief in God is a tool to bring submission to the
individual of noble character. F. Nietzsche, Thus Spoke Zarathustra. Nietzsche had an ideal world in
mind, with an ideal government and an ideal God: the Overman or Superman. These Gods were a
product of natural selection, or social Darwinism. He felt, very strongly, that any kind of moral
limitations upon man would only stand in the way of The Overman. The Will To Power, his strongest
teaching, meant that The Overman should and would do

maybe even a bit of comedy into an intriguing story that you just can t walk away from. James Ellroy,
the self proclaimed Demon Dog of American Literature, has produced a masterpiece in the third book
in his L. A. Quartet. L. A. Confidential is a great example of this genre of literature. It combines
multiple love stories, multiple crimes, and a slew of characters into a work of art that is as highly
dramatic as it is suspenseful. This is a book that will literally change you be affecting your way of
speaking and may even cause you lose of sleep in order to get another couple pages in before calling it

Ed stood up, breathed chaos: cops, shattered glass, an ambulance through the window, loading bodies.
Bud White shouting orders, a little girl in a blood spattered dress eating a doughnut (Ellroy, pg. 467).
Ellroy wrote this book with thoughts of the characters providing the lines of the book. The entire book
is written with dialogue and the stream of conscious of the main character at that point in the story.
This genius idea makes the book flow so fast that you can barely keep up with the action. You almost
have to teach yourself to read again to adjust to Ellroy s style of writing and at first it in confusing but
you do gain a grasp for his literature. When questioned about why he chose to develop this style of
writing he stated that he needed to cut the book down from over 600 pages to fewer than 500 without
losing a drop of the story. By just showing what the characters were thinking not only did he cut the
story by over a hundred pages but made it that much more exciting. L.A. Confidential is a story that
starts out in 1950. There are three detectives that are the main characters of this novel. Ed Exley is a

V2 Rocket Persuasive Essay
On September 6th of 1944, mankind s aspiration to reach the stars slammed into the Earth in the form
of the V2 rocket striking Paris (Britannica; Hollingham). The V2 rocket was a new sort of weapon: it
combined the elegance of rocket science into the brutality of war, with it enabling Nazi Germany to
claim thousands of lives. The man responsible for designing such a perversion of human ambition,
Werner Von Braun, would later become indispensable to the United States mission to put a man on the
moon. The moon project not only showed the vast capability of the US science program, but also
revolutionized many fields of technology and thus bringing a new sense of pride to all mankind in
human achievement. From Von Braun s actions, a paradox arises: ... Show more content on

inevitable, however, society must change malevolent actions into good results so that humanity can
progress both in moral understanding and advance. As John Steinbeck wrote in The Grapes of Wrath,
when mankind takes a step forward, he may slip back, but only half a step, never the full step back,
and likewise society must ensure that when an atrocity comes, it does not embrace the atrocity but
uses it to improve the world and learn from it (Steinbeck 150). To ensure that society begins to learn
from its misdeeds, it must first understand that it has benefitted from atrocious acts. It is essential to
understand that atrocities must be prevented whenever possible and acknowledged as wrong before
improvements can be made. Then society must recognize the atrocity when it occurs and bring good

Power Behind Dreamcatchers
Dreamcatchers are supposed to keep the bad dreams away. Little kids are given these when they are
young to keep the night terrors away. Most people don t even know their background or origin. The
lack of this knowledge leave people to believing in something less special than it could be. It is
important for them to realize the knowledge and power behind the dreamcatcher. Dreamcatchers are
made the way they are to let the positive dreams slip through the holes, to glide down the feathers to
the sleeping person below. Negative dreams would get caught in the web, and got away when the first
light from the sun hit the dreamcatcher. This is why you must have the dream catcher above your bed

Summary Of The Mirror By Virginia Woolf
The way one person perceives the world is not always the way another perceives, just as a reflection
shows a person but reflected backwards. The mirror does not create falsehood; it instead shows the
views of every side. Every person is going to see something different when looking into the mirror
depending on where they stand. When Virginia Woolf writes she tells the world of an idea everybody
can relate to. She writes on women and men and shows how they related through the mirror.
Sometimes to empower and others to educate those that don t have that view point or understand. She
writes both the common and uncommon views and shows how they both stand together in one mirror.
Two text which reflect two Ideas through the mirror to show the world are Professions for Women and
Thoughts on Peace in an Air Raid. Ladies are well represented in Virginia Woolf s stories such as
Professions for Women and Thoughts on Peace in an Air Raid. Both of these Texts reflect the standard
for women at this time. In Professions for women Virginia Woolf tells of her story of being a women;
showing her views of the world through reflection of her life. Virginia Woolf starts by creating
powerful small ideas when she writes, it is true, I am a women; it is true I am employed, but what
professional experiences have I had? Using her short chops of information she has simplified herself
so that more people can see her in their mirror. This is great because it simplifies Woolf making her

Three Reasons Why Sinners is a Persuasive Sermon
Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God Persuasive Sermon, Jonathan Edwards Religious views are all

express the need for god, and the good and bad that comes with or without it. Churches take it upon
themselves to create a sermon, or in other words a speech made by a preacher, priest, or prophet.
Jonathan Edwards was a prodestant, who spoke in a way that almost made them want to give up their
lives for the church. He has Single handedly spoke one of most powerful and moving sermons. Marc
M. Arkin stated, perhaps the single most famous sermon in American history. Edwards used language

There are three reasons why sinners is a persuasive sermon. Powerful language was used by Jonathan

God wants more Christians to stay in the business world, the arts, entertainment, politics, journalism,
etc. and bring their Christian convictions and world view to bear on how they conduct their business,
write songs or films, or paint pictures. One of the reasons for the recent decline of Christian impact on
our culture is because too many Christians have left the fields of science, math, film, art, journalism,
and especially politics, and hence there was a vacuum left that the humanist, skeptic, atheist, and
agnostic filled. So, now when in recent years Christians have tried to boldly make an impact on
culture in these various fields, especially politics, we are finding the whole world view of our culture
has changed and the world view of absolutes, right and wrong, the Ten Commandments, prayer, belief
in God, convictions about abortion and homosexuality as sin are scoffed at, laughed at, labeled as
intolerant, and even pushed out by media blitz or ignoring the facts or not giving Christians
opportunity to voice their opinion. When considering a call to ministry, let me encourage you to not
dichotomize too sharply between the secular and sacred. God wants to use all kinds of vocations to
both disciple the nations ( Matt. 28:19 ) and be salt and light in the culture ( Matthew 5:13 16) and
have dominion and manage the earth (Genesis 1:26 28) Inner Calling and External Confirmation:

Three Musketeers Movie Analysis
One for all, and all for one! (Herek) The most famous and noticeable line in the Three Musketeers
folklore legacy whether it be from the films to the original book by Alexandre Dumas. Although this
famous line has been used throughout many reworks and adaptations of the three musketeers, many
films have not followed in the footsteps of the original book and have changed things to best appeal to
the audience. Most noticeably we see this in the 1993 Musketeer movie directed by Stephen Herek
that proclaimed that the main character D Artagnan, father was killed to set a tense mood. However,
with that being said, there are also many things that reflect the time in which the book was written and
also the social and political hierarchy and structure ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As previously mentioned, the hierarchy of which the French population was separated from that of
religious figures being the highest to common folk were placed at the rock bottom of the pyramid. In
the film this can be interpreted by the open fields and the villages in which people were trading their
crops for money or buying them among themselves to live off of. France just like any other place
during this time in Europe and also worldwide were mostly agricultural as the first industrial
revolution started in the 1700 s by that of England first. With that being said the implementation of
showing the countryside and the social interactions between D artagnan and the locals was another
way that Stephen Herek subtly shown how France was during this time.
Ironically the whole plot of the Three Musketeers is a socio political statement in itself. If not
understood by reading the book by Alexandre Dumas and watching the films, the main plot is that
Cardinal Richelieu plots against the king of France, Louis XIII. In particular, this film puts it in which
Cardinal Richelieu plots to form an alliance with England as France is about to go to war. For the

The Importance Of Freedom Of The Press
Freedom of the of the press has been a tricky topic throughout the ages. The press used to be a reliable
source of news, where the full truth was given to the public. As the years go by more and more are
added, making it difficult for press to do anything. This has often lead to many journalists going to
court to argue against those that have violated their rights granted in the first amendment. The first
amendment clearly states Congress shall make no law abridging the freedom of speech . Despite the
amendments protecting the people from the government, these lawsuits with journalists and public
speakers keep appearing. Nowadays, it is difficult to find a news source without stumbling upon
prejudiced opinions, stories heavily censored, and news created to catch the eye of the public. America
was a country of freedom, but now this country has enforced so many restrictions and laws that most
of that freedom seems lost. Journalism used to be one of the most trusted sources of news. Lately,
journalists have been a huge target on the end of first amendment restrictions. With a journalist s job,

Compare how Robert Frost and Wilfred Owen communicate the theme of loss in Out, Out and
Disabled .
In the two poems Out, Out and Disabled , a similar theme of loss is portrayed. Both of these poems
deal with the subject of physical loss, as both protagonists of these poems experience accidental
amputation. Both Robert Frost and Wilfred Owen manage to captivate their audience s attention, and
also a certain degree of sympathy for the protagonists misfortune. They do this successfully, with the
use of common literary techniques and linguistic skills, such as simile, metaphor, personification,
contrast, and many more literary devices, which range from obvious to very subtle.

Within such a short sentence, the boy s life was simply gone. This use of tripling is very effective, as it
may symbolise a heartbeat, slowly beating away, to its fate. The dashes further enhance this, as they
make the reader pause in the gaps between the words, making the heartbeats seem further and further
apart, and eventually dying away. Another quote which gives the reader a sense of loss is the final
stanza of the poem: And they, since they were not the ones dead, turned to their affairs , in line 33 34.
This quote, to put into simpler words, means that the people who were working with this young boy
(who happen to be his family), had better things to do than to care for the death of this young boy, and
simply turned away, and got back to work. This action seems alarmingly heartless, but nevertheless,
Frost very successfully makes the jreaders feel a huge sense of loss. This line once again shows how
meaningless and vulnerable life is.
Written in the 1910s by Wilfred Owen, Disabled is a poem describing the experience of a young
soldier losing his limbs after fighting in World War I. He later gets discriminated against, and feels
isolated and regretful of his naïve reason to go to war. As opposed to Out, Out , Disabled does not
have an ambiguous title at all. The word disabled is

Lincoln and His Generals by T. Harry Williams
Harry T. Williams was born on May 19, 1909. When in college, he was encouraged by a professor to

He attended Platteville State Teachers College (later Wisconsin State University at Platteville) where
he received a B.Ed in 1931. Williams continued education into graduate school was mainly due to the
lack of work during the Great Depression. He went on to earn a Ph.M. in 1932, and Ph.D. in 1937,

When Lincoln interacted with Scott, he showed a deference for Scott s age and knowledge. Thus
allowing Scott to share his skills, this humility was shored by General McClellan. Lincoln later
changes his approach towards McClellan, trying to boost his confidence and courage. Williams
continually shows McClellan as an egotist, who eventually replaced Scott as General in chief.
McClellan is depicted as unsure, indecisive, self centered and fearful of declaring war. Lincoln
continually defends McClellan but is not afraid of tactfully sending criticism his way. One could
easily be lead to believe that Lincoln was more of a placator. Williams shows us that Lincoln never
hesitated in making difficult decisions based on results. Lincoln s people skills are easily ascertained
in Williams writings. Lincoln seems keen at applying pressure as well as giving his generals a free
hand when necessary.
Williams shows an interesting side of Lincoln s patience that wears thin when there are no early
victories and from the lack of aggressiveness on the Union side. Williams shows a gradual
transformation on Lincoln s selection process. Initially each general was selected on characteristics
such as battle experience and political backing. As the enemy holds out and there is inaction, Lincoln
starts to doubt the ability of his generals and starts to seek generals who can win without excuses.
Williams captures the pressures that are placed

heavily crowed environments with little possibilities to exit over their massive fear of going through a
panic attack. Therefore, today there are signs in many rides at themed parks that warn people of the
closed areas. This specific category of phobias causes the person to fear traveling on bus or even
waiting in a line. This phobia can also lead to being dependent of someone because they are too afraid
to go outside of their homes. Barlow Mavissakalian (1981 pp 4 5), implicated that the clinical picture

The time horizon also affects an investor s ability to accept risk. If an investor has a long time horizon,
the investor may have a greater ability to accept risk because he would have a longer time period to
recoup any losses. This is unlike an investor with a shorter time horizon whose ability to accept risk
may be lower because he would not have the ability to recoup any losses. 3. Tax Concerns After tax
returns are the returns investors are focused on when creating an investment portfolio. If an investor is
currently in a high tax bracket as a result of his income, it may be important to focus on investments
that would not make the investor s situation worse, like investing more heavily in tax deferred
investments. 4. Legal and Regulatory Legal and regulatory factors can act as an investment constraint
and must be considered. An example of this would occur in a trust. A trust could require that no more
than 10% of the trust be distributed each year. Legal and regulatory constraints such as this one often
can t be changed and must not be overlooked. 5. Unique Circumstances Any special needs or
constraints not recognized in any of the constraints listed above would fall in this category. An
example of a unique circumstance would be the constraint an investor might place on investing in any
company that is not socially responsible, such as a tobacco company. Expressing Investment

  • 2. Chemical Oxygen Demand ( B.o ) 31. Biological Oxygen Demand ( B.O.D) Introduction: Biochemical Oxygen Demand (B.O.D.) is the most important parameter to determine the level of pollution in lakes and streams, their self purification capacities, assess the biodegradable organic load of the wastewaters for designing wastewater management or treatment plants and thereafter to evaluate their efficiency or finding out the assimilative capacity of a water body. B.O.D. is an empirical standardized laboratory test defined as the amount of oxygen required for the aerobic decomposition of the organic matter by micro organisms into stable inorganic forms at a given controlled condition of time and temperature in water. The quantity of oxygen required for above ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The greater the B.O.D., the more rapidly oxygen is depleted in the stream which means less oxygen is available to higher aquatic forms of life. As a consequence organisms that are more tolerant of lower dissolved oxygen levels may replace a diversity of more sensitive organisms. A. Titrimetric method Principle The B.O.D. test is based on mainly bio assay procedure, which measure the dissolved oxygen consumed by micro organisms while assimilating and oxidizing the organic matter under aerobic condition. This test measures the oxygen utilized for the biochemical degradation of organic material (carbonaceous demand) and oxidation of inorganic material such as sulphides and ferrous ions during a specified incubation period. It also measures the oxygen used to oxidize reduced forms of nitrogen (nitrogenous demand) unless their oxidation is prevented by an inhibitor. Temperature effects are held constant by performing a test at fixed temperature. The methodology of B.O.D. test is to compute a difference between initial and final D.O. of the samples incubation. Atleast 1.5 L of sample is required to perform the B.O.D. test. D.O. is estimated by iodometric or Winkler s method titration. Since the test being a bio assay procedure, it is necessary to provide standard conditions of temperature, nutrient supply, pH (6.5 7.5), adequate population of microorganisms and absence of microbial growth inhibiting substances. Behavioural ecology is one of many areas which is connected to ecological study. 1. Week 1, Lecture: Measuring species distributions. When determining the distribution of eg Pine trees on a large island. What sampling method does needs to be used, ensuring the scientific method is adhered to. (Assuming that a count of every individual cannot be sampled and it is a homogenous substrate.) To adhere to the scientific method there would need to ensure that there isn t any sampling bias. The simplest method is random sampling. The quadrats would need to be mapped out and cover the entire island points which are generate that fall outside of the target area can be ignored. The quadrats wold need to be of a size relative to the size of the entire island as it could affect the distribution results (random, uniform and clumped/aggregated). Once the data is collected various statistical analysis can be performed then inferences about its distribution can be made. 2. Week 2, Lecture: Distribution, dispersal, and abundance. Who are the three Men who influenced the way people understand the ecological niche. Compare and contrast their views. Ecological niche is defined simply as the role and position a species ha in its own environment and how it meets its needs for resources, how it survives and reproduces. • 6. Critical Analysis Of Higuchi Ichiyo s The Thirteenth Night The shift in ideals of femininity is what accounts for Oseki s plight in The Thirteenth Night. Her story indicates that her son (Taro) s birth was what led to Isamu s sudden transformation. His abusive behavior centers on her being a woman without education (Higuchi and Tanaka, 1960, p.382). The fact that he mocks Oseki for being too stupid to confide in , and that he is keeping [her] in his house merely as wet nurse for Taro is significant Oseki s lack of education is perceived to have rendered her completely incapable of performing the roles of wife and mother as defined by Meiji society (Higuchi and Tanaka, 1960, p.383). This is in spite of how she was brought up in a time when education for girls was not considered necessary, and that Isamu had been informed of her background when he courted her. • 7. The Ponzi Scheme versus the Madoff Scheme Schneeweis Szado (2010, p.9) suggested that ffinancial fraud in general and Ponzi schemes in particular continue to maneuver investors. A Ponzi scheme is frequently described as a securities fraud in which the investment manager is in fact taking money from new investors to fund redemptions from current investors. These strategies are often discovered when new investors cannot be found to offset redemptions from current investors. The Ponzi method received its name from Charles Ponzi, who marketed an investment based on managing the International Postal Reply Coupons. Ponzi suggested that an arbitrage opportunity existed because he could exchange U.S. dollars into the necessary foreign currency, and use the foreign currency to purchase postal reply coupons. The postal reply coupons could be redeemed for U.S. postage stamps, which could then be sold for U.S. dollars. Ponzi promoted unusually high returns to investors when in fact he simply used the new investment to pay of the previous investors. While the scheme soon collapsed, there are similarities between him and the Madoff scheme. For example, Madoff sold primarily to the Jewish community and also Ponzi sold primarily to the immigrant community of the North End of Boston, to which he belonged. Along with that, the validity of Madoff s strategy was a subject argued by the public press (Barron s) as well as by individuals (Markopolus) on the grounds. • 8. The War On The World Fundamentally speaking, warfare is the means by which human society has been organized. The modern world is divided up into a number of states whose sovereignty is based either on the results of warfare or the threat of warfare. The ability of a states to wage and win wars is what determines the geopolitical pecking order. Those who cannot hope to win wars alone pursue policies and deals that ensure the intervention of more capable states in their defense, should one come about. Domestic policies and cultural developments, as well, are understood as wars: at this very moment, there is a War on Drugs, a War on Terror, a War on Women, a War on Poverty, even an alleged War on Christmas. Indeed, the uneasy peace that exists between the world s current superpowers is a result of the expected outcome of Nuclear War. The nature of war, being so essential to the shape and nature of the world we live in, must be understood. To aid us in our own understanding of war, we can benefit tremendously from exploring the ways in which war was practiced, understood, and experienced by our cultural and ideological progenitors, the Greeks and Romans of Classical Antiquity. Classical Greek warfare can be best understood through the manner in which it was practiced: hoplite warfare. Hoplite warfare was communitarian, strictly organized and ritualistic. This particular style of combat shaped and was shaped by the culture in which it developed. In a traditional hoplite battle, men armed with ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Human desires and behaviors are extremely important to the lives of humans, and other kinds of life. Desires and behaviors are found in every living being, to a certain extent. Desires, along with behaviors, are a crucial part to life itself. This aspect implemented in different forms of life plays a large role in critical thinking and decision making. Phaedrus, An Education, O Brother, Where Art Thou, Gulliver s Travels, and The Descent of Man explore and exemplify different ways desire and behavior affect the thought and decision making process. In the movie, An Education, the main character, Jenny, faces many trials and tribulations that young adults encounter. She feels the pressures and expectations to receive a quality education; however, she is not truly satisfied with that alone. As soon as an older, wealthy man, who was full of adventure, entered her life, everything she had previously thought was her destiny was now entirely questionable. Unlike many philosophers, Nietzsche never tried to prove or disprove the existence of God, just that belief in God can create sickness; and to convince that highest achievements in human life depend on elimination of God. Whether God existed had no relevance in his goal. Proclamation of the death of God was a fundamental ingredient in the values Nietzsche advocated. The mirror does not create falsehood; it instead shows the views of every side. Every person is going to see something different when looking into the mirror depending on where they stand. When Virginia Woolf writes she tells the world of an idea everybody can relate to. She writes on women and men and shows how they related through the mirror. Sometimes to empower and others to educate those that don t have that view point or understand. She writes both the common and uncommon views and shows how they both stand together in one mirror. God wants more Christians to stay in the business world, the arts, entertainment, politics, journalism, etc. and bring their Christian convictions and world view to bear on how they conduct their business, write songs or films, or paint pictures. One of the reasons for the recent decline of Christian impact on our culture is because too many Christians have left the fields of science, math, film, art, journalism, and especially politics, and hence there was a vacuum left that the humanist, skeptic, atheist, and agnostic filled. So, now when in recent years Christians have tried to boldly make an impact on culture in these various fields, especially politics, we are finding the whole world view of our culture has changed and the world view of absolutes, right and wrong, the Ten Commandments, prayer, belief in God, convictions about abortion and homosexuality as sin are scoffed at, laughed at, labeled as intolerant, and even pushed out by media blitz or ignoring the facts or not giving Christians opportunity to voice their opinion. Although this famous line has been used throughout many reworks and adaptations of the three musketeers, many films have not followed in the footsteps of the original book and have changed things to best appeal to the audience. Most noticeably we see this in the 1993 Musketeer movie directed by Stephen Herek that proclaimed that the main character D Artagnan, father was killed to set a tense mood. France just like any other place during this time in Europe and also worldwide were mostly agricultural as the first industrial revolution started in the 1700 s by that of England first. With that being said the implementation of showing the countryside and the social interactions between D artagnan and the locals was another way that Stephen Herek subtly shown how France was during this time. This use of tripling is very effective, as it may symbolise a heartbeat, slowly beating away, to its fate. The dashes further enhance this, as they make the reader pause in the gaps between the words, making the heartbeats seem further and further apart, and eventually dying away. Another quote which gives the reader a sense of loss is the final stanza of the poem: And they, since they were not the ones dead, turned to their affairs , in line 33 34. This quote, to put into simpler words, means that the people who were working with this young boy (who happen to be his family), had better things to do than to care for the death of this young boy, and simply turned away, and got back to work.
