Marisela Giesbrecht 101021889 Extractive Reserves
Amazonia possesses the world s largest remaining area of tropical rainforest. The region is an
increasingly important source of natural assets for both regional and economic growth. As the frontier
advances, however, the amazon is being threatened by the destruction of the forest. The extractive
reserve model attempts to combine forest preservation with a workable development effort (DeStefano
Raymond, 1992, p. 5). It aims to achieve this through a strategy of joint management between local
communities and government institutions. It is hoped that over time these extractive reserves will
build economic strength and achieve sustainability. In the long run, however, the reserves will require
locally generated income be supplemented by valuable export revenue. The growth of these extractive
reserves depends on advancing a number of economic, geopolitical and social goals (Hall, 1991, p. 57
70). The extractive reserve was a major policy innovation, since it officially incorporated local
populations for the first time in the process of natural resource management. In theory, extractive
reserves are an ingenious solution for the problem of protecting inhabited forests. However, research
shows that extractive reserves face several major challenges in order to obtain sustainability. Of which
include: generating higher household incomes, rewarding forest stewardship, improving financial
support (Gradwhol Greenberg, 1988, p.

Intellect Argument
The intellect argument also comes into play when critics talk about Eve and her dreams, particularly
the difference in which Adam and Eve receive information after the fall. Adam goes on his journey
with Michael while Eve sleeps. Many see this as supporting the gender hierarchy because Adam s
journey is considered a high form of prophecy because an angel is involved whereas dreams are often
considered a low form (McGrath79). Also, there is the fact that dreams used in previous points of the
poem were Satanic and therefore already given a negative connotation. The difference in which the
two are treated in terms of information is concerning, especially because the difference in which they
are treated is so wide, one traveling with an angel

Community Of Practice Essay
The main difference between Labov s Speech Community and Ekert s Community of Practice is that
the Community of Practice is defined by more than the linguistics codes that are being used. It is
focused on the concept of doing valuable actions that will embrace the community. In order to be part
of a Community of Practice , one should have more than a choice of a language; all characteristics of
involvement in a group are of an importance. In addition, Community of Practice is focused on the
individual and the distinctive views of the different members of the community, while the Speech
Community emphasizes more on the configurations that are being created.

Describe the 3 types of membership within a CoP (Wenger, 1998) giving one example of each from
your own personal experience. The three types of membership within a Community of Practice are full
participation, peripheral participation and marginal participation. A full participant is the one that
participates in the practices of the community. For example, when a participant is part of a group
project in college, and does all the assignments, attends the meetings and collaborates well with the
other participants, this student is a full participant in his/her community. A peripheral participation has
only partial participation in the process. This sometimes can be seen as a process of learning. For
example, when a person is in a process of learning how to swim, he first watches how it is done and
then tries to do it. Thus, he becomes partial participant. The marginal participation differs from the
peripheral participation by the access in the community. The marginal participant is somewhat
sidelined from the process. For example, when a group of friends are planning to go out to a club, only
the ones that have 21 can go, due to the restrictions of age. The ones that are under 21 are
marginalized from

The Tempest Comparative Essay
Discoveries may compel individuals to affirm, or challenge, their perspectives on themselves and the

To what extent does this statement reflect the ideas represented in your related text making clear links

Discovery is the act of detecting something new, or something old that had been unrecognised as
meaningful. Discoveries and discovering can offer new understanding and renewed perceptions on
themselves and others. In The Tempest, William Shakespeare reveals how a discovery can lead to a
new found identity, position in society and view on society. Whilst, in A Hanging, George Orwell

Colony Collapse Disorder
The Buzz on Colony Collapse Disorder Denise Collins According to the National Geographic News
website, the domestic honey bee population has decreased 50% in as many years (Roach, 2004). Many
reasons are blamed for the decrease in honey bee numbers including diseases and pesticides. Scientists
have given the decline in honey bee population phenomenon a name, Colony Collapse Disorder.
While some experts maintain that Colony Collapse Disorder is a nuisance and not a catastrophe, it is a
serious problem affecting domestic honey bees worldwide. Colony Collapse Disorder is a
phenomenon affecting domestic and wild honey bee colonies worldwide. Basically what is happening

Spanish researchers have recently announced they have found the cause of Colony Collapse Disorder.
The scientists are suggesting that the honey bees are being attacked by a fungus called Nosema
ceranae. Through further testing of infected hives, the researchers may have also found a cure. Simply
enough, an antibiotic has been found to be effective in curing the colony (Ford, 2009). I believe that
more research needs to be done to further evaluate the Colony Collapse Disorder. We need to make
sure that all possible causes have been checked and rechecked. There could be more than one cause to
the devastating disorder. There could also be more than one remedy to the problem. The first item that
needs to be completed is do extensive study of the both the wild and domesticated honey bee. This
study of both types is to be done to see why commercial honey bee colonies are affected more often
than wild hives. A healthy hive needs to be quarantined for the control. When a colony is suspected of
being on the verge of collapsing, miniature transponders will be attached to worker bees to track its
movements. Every aspect of the honey bees life needs to be studied and documented. The first sign of
a colony in danger of collapse needs to be documented. When a remedy is found it can be treated as
soon as possible. This step needs to be completed as quickly as possible before it becomes critical. I

The Problems Of Year-Round Schooling
Alan Dessoff reports that year round schooling may or may not be on track. One problem that a lot of
schools are having is overcrowding. More than 2 million students, in 3,000 schools, in 47 states were
attending year round school in 2006 2007. The numbers are still accurate today. This is a problem
because there is not enough room for that many students year round. Year round schooling is also
costing schools a lot more money than the regular 180 day calendar. Bus fare, lunches, and staff
attendance is costing schools a lot of money that most schools cannot afford. Year round schooling
also may affect high school children more than it affects elementary and junior high students because
students in grades 9 12 are looking for summer jobs. One

The True Artisans of Japanese Artifact Swords Essay example
Technology has steadily evolved to develop more innovative and productive techniques in the making
of various crafts. In addition to enhancing the quality of products, the ability to create them at a higher
rate has been discovered. However, quality and quantity are usually inversely proportional to each
other. In more recent times consumers have begun to desire Japanese artifacts. Most producers attempt
to sate this desire through mass production. While this alternative may be inexpensive, it lacks the
high quality that true artisans can deliver. In these cases, consumers are also at fault as they let their
desire for instant gratification outweigh their desire for superior creations. Largely, in the production
of crafts, producers ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Due to this meeting, swords of artistic value could be preserved while swords forged solely for the
purpose of combat had to be destroyed. Even so, many American soldiers purchased katanas cheaply.
This trend became so rampant that as of 1958 there were more Japanese swords in America than in
Japan (Japanese). Nevertheless, resuming sword production after lifting the prohibition was
problematic because all swordsmiths had to understand that each blade they made could not be an
object of war, but rather, an object of art.
When the prohibition on sword forging was lifted in 1953, many potential swordsmiths flocked to the
market. However, to prevent the large scale production of cheap weapons with no aesthetic value,
Japan s government imposed a set of restrictions to help the craft maintain a high quality (Kapp 27).
The three restrictions fell under the categories of qualification, quantity, and government awareness.
The first rule for controlling the quality is that only licensed swordsmith can produce a Japanese
blade. To obtain a license, an apprenticeship must be served for at least five years. The second rule
limits the number of blades a smith can create monthly. A swordsmith can only produce up to two long
swords or three short swords per month. The final restriction is that all swords made must be
registered with Japan s police force. The quantity per month was

Essay Man Against Nature in Jurassic Park
Man Against Nature in Jurassic Park
The world was made for man to conquer and rule, and under human rule it was meant to become a
paradise (Ishmael 82). Much like this evolutionary mythological theory, the movie Jurassic Park tells a
tale of man s attempt to rule over nature. Through the movie s description and imagery, the viewer
perceives the arrogance of humans to control nature, and the consequences and failures of this flawed
intention. John Hammond, park creator, uses state of the art technology and ideas to recover dinosaur
DNA, fill in missing gene caps, and breed the previously extinct animals to exploit his
accomplishment. This process is set into motion without regard to the ethics behind the research, and

In an attempt to smuggle dino embryos off of the island for personal greed, the island s unhappy
computer specialist shuts down the park s defenses to escape. Nature only needs this one small
opportunity, breaks loose, and pure pandemonium on the island ensues. Those in control realize that
they have none, and become the prey of their nonobedient creations.
Near the beginning of the movie, Dr. s Grant and Sadtler are on a paleological skeleton dig, when one
digger s boy remarks that the dangerous carnivore Velociraptor doesn t look very scary, more like a
giant turkey. This typical human response parallels many other naïve and arrogant conclusions made
throughout the movie, and is essentially the main theme. In viewing nature from afar, a non interactive
position, the dinosaur is serene, picturesque, and non threatening. The boy arrogantly assumes that the
Raptor is not dangerous, simplifies his existence, and associates it to a creature that we breed, exploit,
and control. Dr. Grant takes exception to this comment, and he tells the boy to picture yourself in the
Cretacious Period, and vividly describes the Raptor s normal hunting ritual. This description places
the boy in nature, takes him off his arrogant objective pedestal, and rips away his born in superiority.
Suddenly the boy finds himself terrified, as within nature everything is

The first American trading ship to call at San Pedro was the Lelia Bryd, in 1805. At that time, it was

Analysis Of Lawrence C. Goodwyn s The Sixties
Within the article, author Lawrence C. Goodwyn speaks on many topics involving both race and
populism in the southern states. Goodwyn also speaks on the evolution of the biracial movement by
the name of the Populist Party as well as its abiding legacy and impact on society. Populism at one
point in time simply meant the advocacy of multiple reform issues. Topics including the election of
senators, worker rights, and income tax were among the few reforms led by the Populist Party.
Goodwyn briefly touches on exactly how the modern day connection to populism has evolved as well
when he states, ...It is not invoked to explain George Wallace, as it is used to explain Lindon B.

Populist Party was amongst the many county s that remained prevalent due to things such as the
increase of many white southerners feeling slightly threatened by the thought of the concept of black

touchdown and changes your fortunes in one play. You don t need to say much about him. The Rams
offensive line and wide receivers aren t special, and their quarterbacks are far from even pedestrian

left off in 2014 as a RB1. C.J. Anderson should get a bigger workload. We expected him to get a big
workload last year; but this year, he may have finally put the threats of Ronnie Hillman and now
Devontae Booker to bed. The Broncos matched Miami s offer sheet for Anderson and likely wouldn t
have done that without being confident in him as their bell cow back post Peyton Manning. Mark
Sanchez at quarterback, or Trevor Siemian for that matter, wont be much of a downgrade as Manning
was a game manager by the end of last season. Anderson should get a ton of touches in a Gary Kubiak

Using the fact that young people are a lot more care free than people with families are, Club 18 30
made no statistics, graphs and things such like are shown to demonstrate how hot or what the weather
is going to be like, like the Skytours holiday did, instead they used lots of bright colours which reflect
heat and summer, such as orange, red, blue and green. The other demonstration of heat is a picture,
which takes up half of the brochure. It shows two boys and girls messing around with each other (use
of connotation as the image is implying sex) with only their swimming clothes on, which is another
use of connotation as it implies that it is hot, they also all have tans. The two girls have put ice creams
on top of the boy s heads. The ice creams are trickling down the heads and chests of the two men,
which shows that it is hot. The position of the two ice creams makes it look like there are horns
coming out of their heads. Which implies that they are naughty devils which implies sex (more uses of
connotation)
WOB (white on black) is used in one of the boxes to give more emphasis about one of there extra
package deals. A different font is used to highlight sub headings to draw your attention to them. The
boxes used are plainly set out e.g. they are not tilted like the boxes in the skytours holiday are.

Masque Of Amontillado
Montresor met Fortunato at a carnival one day. He lures Fortunato into thinking that he has a pipe full
of Amontillado in his vault because he knew Fortunato loves wine. Montresor was about to go see
Luchresi, so that he can taste the fresh Amontillado. Fortunato refused to let that happen and replaced
Luchresi with himself so he could taste the Amontillado. As they reached Montresor s vault, he
offered Fortunato a drink of Medoc to deepen his drunk as they headed deeper. Their search for the
non existent Amontillado lead them to a less spacious area with bones of humans rested on the ground
and walls, the niche. For a moment, Fortunato stumbled a bit from the wine, which gave Montresor a
chance to chained him onto the granite. In a pile full of bones, he removed them and exposed some
building stones and a mortar. As his friend began to sombered, Fortunato laughed and thought
Montresor was joking around as he buried him behind a wall.
In his story, Poe used foreshadowing when Montresor offered Fortunato a drink; before they drank the
wine, Fortunato said I drink to the buried that repose us. and Montresor replied, And I to your long life
. Montresor knew that Fortunato would not have long to live because his main objective was revenge

and pain. Most of Poe s stories are considered literature because of his use of irony, first person

The Ottoman Empire And Islamic Terrorism
The Ottoman Empire and Islamic Terrorism
Florida International University
By
Melinda Persaud
November 7, 2014
Introduction What is known today as modern day Turkey, was once one of the most powerful empires
in the world. They referred to this imperial state as the Ottoman Empire. The Purpose of the empire
was to gain land , and spread their Islamic teachings. With this they had created a thirteenth century
empire led by Osman, the founder of the Ottoman Empire. Osman surrounded himself with strong
solders who specialized in ambushes, and hit and run tactics, they referred to these highly trained
soldiers as Janissaries . The empire they built was the largest and most dominant of the Muslim
empires. The decline of the Ottoman Empire led to terrorist movements, specifically Islamic terrorism.
Wanting to spread their beliefs through violence, Islamic terrorist groups began to try to overpower
certain nations. It not only existed in the later history but still seems to play a big role even today. This
has spread throughout the world from the horrific tragedy of the World Trade Center all the way to the
multiple bombings in the London Underground. One main terrorist group that has our focus today
would be ISIS whose purpose is to create an Islamic state. This is only one example of a current
Islamic terrorist group. Power, religion, and beliefs are what seem to make up the goal of what these
Islamic terrorist groups are trying to allow.

My Trip To Knott s Scary Farm
Passion comes to people over time, it can come from the simplest of things such as fishing or even
running. But there s some people who have those passions that may come as peculiar to many people.
Instead of judging these individuals, we need to take a step back and try to understand from their
perspective. I was 13 years old when I finally found a passion that I really enjoyed. Most kids that age

Operational Failures Occur Within Organizations Across All...
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Operational failures occur within organizations across all industries, with
consequences ranging from minor inconveniences to major catastrophes. How can managers
encourage frontline workers to solve problems in response to operational failures? In the
manufacturing industry, the setting for this study, operational failures occur due to an internal
constraint which is the over use of one major machine. Using data reported from both the production
and sale teams, the researcher found that problem solving in response to operational failures is
influenced by both the downtime posed by the constraint and the extent to which the organization
incurs a lost. Findings can be used by the organization to increase the management awareness of the
extent to which downtime affects the operation process and ways by which improvement can take
place.. Key concepts include: Operational failures that trigger more financial and liability risks are
associated with more break down of the machine. By communicating the importance of problem
solving and engaging in problem solving themselves, line managers can stimulate increased problem
solving among workers. Even without managers regular engagement in problem solving,
communication about its importance can promote more problem solving among workers. By
explaining some of the variation in responsiveness to operational failures, this study empowers
managers to adjust their approach to stimulate more problem solving within the

The Kkk And The Klux Klan
There was a time when the Ku Klux Klan took over the Republican Party and dominated Colorado
politics. In the 1920s, from Maine to California, in the cities and in rural communities, large numbers
of men and women joined the KKK (Fleming). The KKK was and still are part of the Colorado

governor Clarence Morley the mayor of Denver, Benjamin Stapleton, and U.S. Senator Rice Means
were all Klansmen. Also, the state s House of Representatives for the most part were ran by the Klan.
The KKK marched and burned crosses in small towns throughout the state, from Great Plains through
the mountains to the Western Slope. As Denver, Pueblo, Grand Junction, Canon City and other towns
and cities surrendered to the Klan, only one major city escaped: Colorado Springs.
Six Confederate veterans from Pulaski, Tennessee created the original Ku Klux Klan on December 24,
1865, during the Reconstruction of the South after the Civil War. The KKK stretched into almost
every southern state by 1870 and became a mouthpiece for white southern resistance to the
Republican Party s Reconstruction era policies designed to create political and economic equality for
blacks. The members conducted a campaign of intimidation and violence directed at white and black
Republican leaders. Though Congress passed legislation

Military Historians And Theorists Postulate That Napoleon...
Many military historians and theorists postulate that Napoleon invented modern warfare. This belief is
not true. Although there are aspects of how Napoleon fought that are used by many modern armies
today, and his tactics and philosophy of fighting should continue to be studied, Napoleonic warfare is
not fundamentally similar to modern warfare. Napoleon implemented ideas that modern armies use
today; however the Revolutions in Military Affairs (RMAs) of the Franco Prussian Wars and
American Civil War, and the military revolutions of World War I, and the Nuclear Age dictate to a
greater degree how modern warfare is practiced. Military officers around the world still study
Napoleon, but that does not mean that he and his style of warfare invented modern warfare. Napoleon
is still relevant today because those that studied him such as Clausewitz and Jomni were able to distil
Napoleon s Operational Art which is very relevant to military commanders and strategists today.
Napoleon also introduced to Europe and the world how to build, maneuver and effectively use large
armies, corps and echelons higher, and how to motivate soldiers. (take from The Rise of Napoleon).
However, Napoleon and his adversaries still fought battles, not in combat, which is continues conflict
that stretches for weeks and months. No new innovations came from Napoleonic warfare. He and his
rivals still used similar weapon systems and tactics. Napoleon s genius and success lay in his ability to

Summary Of The Short Story The Shawl By Langston Hughes
In the short story, The Shawl by Cynthia Ozick, the symbol of the Shawl changes over the course of
the story. For Magda, the protagonist who is a baby, the shawl represents protection and nurturing.
Once Magda dies, however, the shawl represents mourning and emptiness for Rosa, Magda s mother.
Similarly, in the short story, Thank you, Ma am by Langston Hughes the blue suede shoes symbolize
varying ideas as the story develops. Initially, Roger, the protagonist, has a desire which is not met, to
own blue suede shoes, the shoes therefore, represent a feeling of lacking. Later in the story Roger is
given money to buy the shoes, at which point the shoes begin to represent his needs being met. Both
Ozick and Hughes use accessories as symbols to illustrate the protagonists transitioning between
gaining and lacking proper nourishment.
The shawl provides Magda with sustenance and protection, which allows Magda to provide these
same benefits for Rosa. In describing the shawl, Ozick writes, It was a magical shawl, it could nourish
an infant for three days and three night . While the shawl provides Magda with all the nutrients she
needs to survive, Magda helps Rosa feel satisfied, despite giving her food rations to Magda. Rosa
gains these crucial necessities indirectly from the shawl through Magda, while Magda, on the other
hand, benefits directly from the shawl. For both Magda and Rosa the shawl, in providing them with
the sustenance they need, symbolizes them having their basic needs met.
Once Magda dies, however, the shawl symbolizes an emptiness and dearth of nourishment. During her
life, the shawl provides for Magda, which allows Rosa to reap benefit also, but once Magda dies, and
the shawl no longer provides sustenance. Ozick writes, Rosa drank Magda s shawl until it dried . The
shawl dries up quickly, in contrast to the constant, never ending nourishment that the shawl possessed
prior to Magda s death. The dried up shawl symbolizes Rosa s lacking. Before Magda died Rosa s
needs were met through Magda, however, now that Magda is gone Rosa no longer has those needs
met. Although the shawl, initially, symbolized Rosa receiving proper sustenance, once Magda dies the
shawl symbolizes Rosa s lack of

##us The King As A Good Leader In King Oedipus The King
Throughout history, stories, legends, tall tales and such, are molded around leaders that have achieved
astonishing feats of heroism, although through time the great hero makes mistakes that he cannot
undo. Hardships and issues emerge from the depths of evil and mischief; the leader struggles to stay
rational as time goes on, so he begins to use everything in his power to solve the issue. He becomes
fast to temper in arguments on what should be done, he begins to focus on the current state and doesn t
take into account on what may lie ahead, but he can t seem to try and choose what is best. In the Greek
Tragedy, Oedipus Rex, a great leader, King Oedipus struggles to choose what is best and remain
rational so he can be true to his people. Oedipus, attempting to out due his fate set upon him by the
gods makes decisions to sometimes help himself over his people showing him to be ineffective at
leading; however, on the other hand, he tries to be as true as he can to attempt to rid Thebes of a
cursed plague, demonstrating that Oedipus is both a ineffective and effective leader. Oedipus displays
to be a good leader one must understand what his people need and choose decisions that will benefit
Thebes and the people whom live in it. By making decisions he was able to gain the support of the
people and pursues to end the plague ravaging the city. Oedipus constantly seeked answers improve

whose hand Laius, son Labdacus, met his death, I direct that man to tell me everything. No matter
what he fears for having so long withheld it. (Sophocles 211) Oedipus begs that if anyone knows who
anything even the shortest of statements would suffice his current concern of the situation. What
Oedipus doesn t realize is how dramatically ironic his statement was, he was the one whose hands met
Laius s death, only one man knows the truth. Although, even if any man were aware of what had
happened, Oedipus would not punish the man, he would probably as well reward the man with wealth

The 2 legged mascot manned by a human first came around in 1958 when an English bulldog was
bought by student government. This dog was named Colonel Rock in memory of the school s athletic
director and coach Ray Hanson, a marine colonel. A statue of the mascot was put up at WIU and
moved to the entrance of the football field in 2002. Western is the only public college in the country
with permission to use the name The Fighting Leathernecks(Fall 2016 Western Illinois University Fast
Facts). Western is a fairly affordable school with an in state tuition of $11,267 and out of state tuition
is 15,515 dollars. Room and board at WIU is $9,830 which is fairly cheap compared to other colleges.
Other fees include internet which can be purchased for $20 30 and laundry costs which is a mere
$1.25 to wash and $1.00 to dry your clothes(Western Illinois University). Most students live on
campus in one the six housing halls. Bayliss Henninger and Tanner Halls are for first year students
only. All first year students are required to stay in these halls for the first year. After freshman year
students are allowed to stay in any of the other 4 housing halls. If students do not live on campus they
rent a house in the surrounding area or perhaps an apartment(Western Illinois University). There are
many scholarships available through Western itself that can provide quite a bit of money for you to get
through college. Some scholarships are very

The Parliamentary Power Of Finland
Finland is a parliamentary democracy with a multiparty political system. It has a mixed presidential
and parliamentary system with executive powers divided between the president and the prime
minister. The president is the head of state and the commander in chief of the Defense Forces who
oversees national security and foreign affairs. The president is elected for a term of six years and may
hold up to two consecutive terms maximum. The president s power has been slightly reduced since the
constitutional change in 2000 giving the prime minister, who is appointed by the president, a little
more power. Although its power has weakened, it still plays an important part in political affairs. The
legislative power of Finland is allocated to the Finnish Parliament. It consists of 200 members that are
elected every 4 years. The Parliament has three main function; it passes laws, it approves the national
budget, and it oversees the government. The executive power is exercised by the Council of State,
which is led by the prime minister. The Council of State is the government and it has 12 ministries that
are responsible for their own department of the government such as the Ministry of Finance, Justice,
etc.
Finland s economy is highly industrialized and very dependent on its exports, primarily on high tech
manufactured goods and its forestry industry. It s so dependent that exported goods make up nearly a
third of Finland s GDP. It s three main importing and exporting partners are

Essay On Server Acute Respiratory Syndrome
Current and Potentially Future control Strategies:
In 2003 a global disease outbreak of what is now known as Server Acute Respiratory Syndrome, but
was unknown to many scientists occurred. The epidemic s origin was in Guangdong province of
southern China in 2002, where the first cases of SARS are recorded. SARS is classed as a global
health threat by the World Health Organization and in 2003; an epidemic killed approximately 774
people in the countries of Canada, Hong Kong, Taiwan, China, Singapore, Thailand and the United
Kingdom before it was successfully contained. (Who.int, 2017) This is due to the effective mode of
transmission used by the virus. The SARS virions are spread through respiratory droplets expelled
from a contaminated ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Being in isolation also includes restriction of infected person s movement to stop the spread of that
illness around the body. This aided in the prevention of spreading the virus as increases breathing rates
disrupted the virion cells, causing them to spread further to uninfected epithelial cells. (Cdc.gov, 2017)
While quarantine refers to the isolation of a person who, does not show any symptoms of the disease
but has been exposed to SARS and could potentially become infectious. (Cdc.gov, 2017)
A travel advisory was put in place so that travellers, airline crew and airlines where made aware of the
outbreak and told to report anyone displaying the symptoms of the virus. (Who.int, 2017) Quarantine,
the isolation of asymptomatic individuals who are thought to be incubating infection, was a prominent
control strategy used, which successful controlled the spread of the disease.
Currently there is no confirmed treatment or vaccine that works for every case of SARS. Over time
the body s immune system and in particular the third line of defence produces the effective B cell
(antibody) which can kill the virus. The presence of the virus will be detected and phagocytes engulf
invading virus cells and mark them as forging material otherwise known as antigens. B cells notice
that the antigens have been presented on the phagocytes and will begin to secrete large quantities of
the correct antibodies. This will take time as SARS is a new form of virus and has not infected human

Analysis Of The Military Intervention In Syria
In this article, Bellamy explores the argument that the failure to intervene in Syria is due to the
controversies in Libya. Bellamy argues that there is no substantial evidence to backup this line of
reasoning. Bellamy contends that the reason behind the UN paralysis on Syria is credited to the
politics surrounding the conflict than the concerns about R2P. Although the main argument of this
article is focused on the political issues surrounding the R2P in Syria, the main part I will draw from
this article is its discussion on the military aspect between Syria and Russia. Similar to Stent (2016)
this article overlooks other aspects that have contributed to the inaction of the UN and international
community towards Syria. However, Bellamy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The main limitation of this article is that it was unable to provide a sound reason of how a UN
resolution would have transformed the situation as long as military means are not incorporated.
Nonetheless, this article s argument is useful as supplementary information for my research essay
since it confirms how significant the role of state s strategic and geopolitical position play when it
comes to deciding whether to intervene or not. Paris, R 2014, The Responsibility to Protect and the
Structural Problems of Preventive Humanitarian Intervention, International Peacekeeping, vol. 21 no.
5, pp. 569 603. In this article, Paris examines the assumed link between military intervention and the
desired result of preventing or ending mass atrocities. Paris uses the case study of Libya as an example
to point out the five fundamental structural problems in this logic of military intervention to end the
killing of civilians. This article is useful for my essay since the article provides a counterargument
against academics that argue in defence of the R2P. The argument highlights how most literature on
R2P is focused on the normative and legal issues, rather than focusing on the practical complexities of
how an armed intervention could protect civilians in conflict. Moreover, he provides a good
explanation about how the non consensus on the Syrian matter can be credit to the debated legality of
humanitarian intervention and R2P. The

Examples Of Malebolge In Dante s Inferno
I was once loved and adored. I once shone brightly inside everyone ever created. I was heir to The
Powers , which allow you to influence anyone. I was once somebody, but now I am nobody. I am
despised among all races . I am no longer the heir to The Powers . I used to be known as Life, but
currently I am known as Malebolge, or evil ditch. Malebolge is also the eighth ring of Hell in Dante s
La Mappa dell Inferno. I am, no, I was Life. Jason woke up with a start. He was dreaming of
Malebolge again. Who is she? He wondered. Jason, honey, you awake? said a muffled voice from
outside his door. Jason groaned. He woke up because of a nightmare and landed in another one. Yes
mom, I m awake. He answered. Good, came another voice, his dad s. we are leaving in twenty
minutes. Get ready and come ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I was expecting you. I am Life, known to you as Malebolge. Jason only saw faint white light, then he
dared to ask. What are The Powers ? Why me? My dear, you passed where others failed. You believed
in Life and passed through Death s illusions and lies unchanged. The Powers will let me change the
world. Remove pain and war. Spread the news to save me. Jason awoke mumbling Spread the news.
Darren and Merva were mystified; without any further encouragement, Jason told them what
happened. Mom and Dad, I don t have a long time to live left so I want you Jason said while pointing
at his parents. to spread the news. Two days later, Jason passed away. At his funeral, his father said
Jason was a great boy. He said he was lucky to become sixteen years old while struggling with level
four leukemia. His final words were Live life at its fullest, not only for yourself, but for me too.
Malebolge felt the chain s keeping her in this Hell loosen. Jason did it! Even though he committed
benevolent suicide, I will make sure it was worth it. I am Malebolge. No, I am Paradiso, or Paradise. I

William O Connell Bradley s Contributions
William O Connell Bradley (1847 1914) was the 32nd Governor of Kentucky and a U.S. senator. The
first Republican to serve as governor of the state, he became known as the father of the Republican
Party in Kentucky. After a well received speech seconding the presidential nomination of Ulysses S.
Grant at the 1880 Republican National Convention, he was nominated for governor in 1887. He lost
the general election that year, but won in 1895, capitalizing on divisions in the Democratic Party over
the issue of free silver. His term was marked by political struggles and violence. He advanced the
status of black citizens, but was unable to enact much of his reform agenda over a hostile Democratic
majority. He was elected by the state legislature to the U.S. Senate in 1907, when voting was
deadlocked and the Democratic candidate, outgoing Governor J. C. W. Beckham, refused to withdraw
in favor of a compromise candidate. Bradley s opposition to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Beginning with the first manned Gemini mission in 1965, commemorative medallions were prepared
for the astronauts at their request. These were produced by a company only known as Fliteline and
were struck either in a pewter colored base metal, sometimes painted a gold color, or sterling silver,
and were flown on all 10 manned Gemini missions. The Robbins Company of Attleboro,
Massachusetts, was contracted in 1968 to produce commemorative medallions beginning with Apollo
7, the first manned Apollo flight since the Apollo 1 disaster. These were purchased by astronauts and
support crew personnel at NASAAstronaut Flight Office, and a total of over 3,000 sterling silver
Robbins medallions were flown into space across the 12 manned flights of the Apollo program. Some
of these were later sold in public auction for up to $60,000. (Full

  • 2. Marisela Giesbrecht 101021889 Extractive Reserves Marisela Giesbrecht 101021889 Extractive Reserves Amazonia possesses the world s largest remaining area of tropical rainforest. The region is an increasingly important source of natural assets for both regional and economic growth. As the frontier advances, however, the amazon is being threatened by the destruction of the forest. The extractive reserve model attempts to combine forest preservation with a workable development effort (DeStefano Raymond, 1992, p. 5). It aims to achieve this through a strategy of joint management between local communities and government institutions. It is hoped that over time these extractive reserves will build economic strength and achieve sustainability. In the long run, however, the reserves will require locally generated income be supplemented by valuable export revenue. The growth of these extractive reserves depends on advancing a number of economic, geopolitical and social goals (Hall, 1991, p. 57 70). The extractive reserve was a major policy innovation, since it officially incorporated local populations for the first time in the process of natural resource management. In theory, extractive reserves are an ingenious solution for the problem of protecting inhabited forests. However, research shows that extractive reserves face several major challenges in order to obtain sustainability. Of which include: generating higher household incomes, rewarding forest stewardship, improving financial support (Gradwhol Greenberg, 1988, p. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Intellect Argument The intellect argument also comes into play when critics talk about Eve and her dreams, particularly the difference in which Adam and Eve receive information after the fall. Adam goes on his journey with Michael while Eve sleeps. Many see this as supporting the gender hierarchy because Adam s journey is considered a high form of prophecy because an angel is involved whereas dreams are often considered a low form (McGrath79). Also, there is the fact that dreams used in previous points of the poem were Satanic and therefore already given a negative connotation. The difference in which the two are treated in terms of information is concerning, especially because the difference in which they are treated is so wide, one traveling with an angel ... • 4. Community Of Practice Essay The main difference between Labov s Speech Community and Ekert s Community of Practice is that the Community of Practice is defined by more than the linguistics codes that are being used. It is focused on the concept of doing valuable actions that will embrace the community. In order to be part of a Community of Practice , one should have more than a choice of a language; all characteristics of involvement in a group are of an importance. In addition, Community of Practice is focused on the individual and the distinctive views of the different members of the community, while the Speech Community emphasizes more on the configurations that are being created. 2. Name the 3 features of the CoP, providing examples of each from the text. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Describe the 3 types of membership within a CoP (Wenger, 1998) giving one example of each from your own personal experience. The three types of membership within a Community of Practice are full participation, peripheral participation and marginal participation. A full participant is the one that participates in the practices of the community. For example, when a participant is part of a group project in college, and does all the assignments, attends the meetings and collaborates well with the other participants, this student is a full participant in his/her community. A peripheral participation has only partial participation in the process. This sometimes can be seen as a process of learning. For example, when a person is in a process of learning how to swim, he first watches how it is done and then tries to do it. Thus, he becomes partial participant. The marginal participation differs from the peripheral participation by the access in the community. The marginal participant is somewhat sidelined from the process. For example, when a group of friends are planning to go out to a club, only the ones that have 21 can go, due to the restrictions of age. The ones that are under 21 are marginalized from ... Colony Collapse Disorder The Buzz on Colony Collapse Disorder Denise Collins According to the National Geographic News website, the domestic honey bee population has decreased 50% in as many years (Roach, 2004). Many reasons are blamed for the decrease in honey bee numbers including diseases and pesticides. Scientists have given the decline in honey bee population phenomenon a name, Colony Collapse Disorder. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Spanish researchers have recently announced they have found the cause of Colony Collapse Disorder. The scientists are suggesting that the honey bees are being attacked by a fungus called Nosema ceranae. Through further testing of infected hives, the researchers may have also found a cure. Simply enough, an antibiotic has been found to be effective in curing the colony (Ford, 2009). I believe that more research needs to be done to further evaluate the Colony Collapse Disorder. We need to make sure that all possible causes have been checked and rechecked. There could be more than one cause to the devastating disorder. There could also be more than one remedy to the problem. The first item that needs to be completed is do extensive study of the both the wild and domesticated honey bee. This study of both types is to be done to see why commercial honey bee colonies are affected more often than wild hives. A healthy hive needs to be quarantined for the control. When a colony is suspected of being on the verge of collapsing, miniature transponders will be attached to worker bees to track its movements. Every aspect of the honey bees life needs to be studied and documented. The first sign of a colony in danger of collapse needs to be documented. When a remedy is found it can be treated as soon as possible. This step needs to be completed as quickly as possible before it becomes critical. I am estimating ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

More than 2 million students, in 3,000 schools, in 47 states were attending year round school in 2006 2007. The numbers are still accurate today. This is a problem because there is not enough room for that many students year round. Year round schooling is also costing schools a lot more money than the regular 180 day calendar. In addition to enhancing the quality of products, the ability to create them at a higher rate has been discovered. However, quality and quantity are usually inversely proportional to each other. In more recent times consumers have begun to desire Japanese artifacts. Most producers attempt to sate this desire through mass production. While this alternative may be inexpensive, it lacks the high quality that true artisans can deliver. In these cases, consumers are also at fault as they let their desire for instant gratification outweigh their desire for superior creations. Largely, in the production of crafts, producers ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Due to this meeting, swords of artistic value could be preserved while swords forged solely for the purpose of combat had to be destroyed. Even so, many American soldiers purchased katanas cheaply. This trend became so rampant that as of 1958 there were more Japanese swords in America than in Japan (Japanese). Nevertheless, resuming sword production after lifting the prohibition was problematic because all swordsmiths had to understand that each blade they made could not be an object of war, but rather, an object of art. When the prohibition on sword forging was lifted in 1953, many potential swordsmiths flocked to the market. However, to prevent the large scale production of cheap weapons with no aesthetic value, Japan s government imposed a set of restrictions to help the craft maintain a high quality (Kapp 27). The three restrictions fell under the categories of qualification, quantity, and government awareness. The first rule for controlling the quality is that only licensed swordsmith can produce a Japanese blade. To obtain a license, an apprenticeship must be served for at least five years. The second rule limits the number of blades a smith can create monthly. A swordsmith can only produce up to two long swords or three short swords per month. The final restriction is that all swords made must be registered with Japan s police force. The quantity per month was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Raven claims he was in the Violet Room between 9:45 and ten, however, if you look at the picture of the mansion you notice that the Violet room and the Black Room are the only two room with windows open. This shows that the Raven could have easily left the Violet room to kill Poe in just a matter of 15 minutes. This already incriminates the Raven as the murderer so we are left with the question of what the murder weapon was. The only three possible weapons are the bust of pallas, the eye dropper, and the cloth. However, we know automatically it wasn t the cloth. If the cloth is the same cloth Lenore gave The Red Death to cough into, not only would Poe show signs of the Red Death but the murderer would have been found dead as well. As for the eyedropper, it could have been used to intoxicate Poe, with poison. But after finding the vile of poison in Annabel Lee s room completely sealed, it s safe to say that the eye dropper was most definitely not the murder weapon. This leaves us with the bust of ... • 34. Military Historians And Theorists Postulate That Napoleon... Many military historians and theorists postulate that Napoleon invented modern warfare. This belief is not true. Although there are aspects of how Napoleon fought that are used by many modern armies today, and his tactics and philosophy of fighting should continue to be studied, Napoleonic warfare is not fundamentally similar to modern warfare. Napoleon implemented ideas that modern armies use today; however the Revolutions in Military Affairs (RMAs) of the Franco Prussian Wars and American Civil War, and the military revolutions of World War I, and the Nuclear Age dictate to a greater degree how modern warfare is practiced. Military officers around the world still study Napoleon, but that does not mean that he and his style of warfare invented modern warfare. Napoleon is still relevant today because those that studied him such as Clausewitz and Jomni were able to distil Napoleon s Operational Art which is very relevant to military commanders and strategists today. Napoleon also introduced to Europe and the world how to build, maneuver and effectively use large armies, corps and echelons higher, and how to motivate soldiers. (take from The Rise of Napoleon). For Magda, the protagonist who is a baby, the shawl represents protection and nurturing. Once Magda dies, however, the shawl represents mourning and emptiness for Rosa, Magda s mother. Similarly, in the short story, Thank you, Ma am by Langston Hughes the blue suede shoes symbolize varying ideas as the story develops. Initially, Roger, the protagonist, has a desire which is not met, to own blue suede shoes, the shoes therefore, represent a feeling of lacking. Later in the story Roger is given money to buy the shoes, at which point the shoes begin to represent his needs being met. Both Ozick and Hughes use accessories as symbols to illustrate the protagonists transitioning between gaining and lacking proper nourishment. The shawl provides Magda with sustenance and protection, which allows Magda to provide these same benefits for Rosa. In describing the shawl, Ozick writes, It was a magical shawl, it could nourish an infant for three days and three night . While the shawl provides Magda with all the nutrients she needs to survive, Magda helps Rosa feel satisfied, despite giving her food rations to Magda. Rosa gains these crucial necessities indirectly from the shawl through Magda, while Magda, on the other hand, benefits directly from the shawl. For both Magda and Rosa the shawl, in providing them with the sustenance they need, symbolizes them having their basic needs met. Once Magda dies, however, the shawl symbolizes an emptiness and dearth of nourishment. During her life, the shawl provides for Magda, which allows Rosa to reap benefit also, but once Magda dies, and the shawl no longer provides sustenance. Ozick writes, Rosa drank Magda s shawl until it dried . The shawl dries up quickly, in contrast to the constant, never ending nourishment that the shawl possessed prior to Magda s death. The dried up shawl symbolizes Rosa s lacking. Before Magda died Rosa s needs were met through Magda, however, now that Magda is gone Rosa no longer has those needs met. • 43. The Parliamentary Power Of Finland Finland is a parliamentary democracy with a multiparty political system. It has a mixed presidential and parliamentary system with executive powers divided between the president and the prime minister. The president is the head of state and the commander in chief of the Defense Forces who oversees national security and foreign affairs. The president is elected for a term of six years and may hold up to two consecutive terms maximum. The president s power has been slightly reduced since the constitutional change in 2000 giving the prime minister, who is appointed by the president, a little more power. Although its power has weakened, it still plays an important part in political affairs. The legislative power of Finland is allocated to the Finnish Parliament. It consists of 200 members that are elected every 4 years. The Parliament has three main function; it passes laws, it approves the national budget, and it oversees the government. The executive power is exercised by the Council of State, which is led by the prime minister. Essay On Server Acute Respiratory Syndrome Current and Potentially Future control Strategies: In 2003 a global disease outbreak of what is now known as Server Acute Respiratory Syndrome, but was unknown to many scientists occurred. The epidemic s origin was in Guangdong province of southern China in 2002, where the first cases of SARS are recorded. SARS is classed as a global health threat by the World Health Organization and in 2003; an epidemic killed approximately 774 people in the countries of Canada, Hong Kong, Taiwan, China, Singapore, Thailand and the United Kingdom before it was successfully contained. (Who.int, 2017) This is due to the effective mode of transmission used by the virus. The SARS virions are spread through respiratory droplets expelled from a contaminated ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Being in isolation also includes restriction of infected person s movement to stop the spread of that illness around the body. This aided in the prevention of spreading the virus as increases breathing rates disrupted the virion cells, causing them to spread further to uninfected epithelial cells. (Cdc.gov, 2017) While quarantine refers to the isolation of a person who, does not show any symptoms of the disease but has been exposed to SARS and could potentially become infectious. (Cdc.gov, 2017) A travel advisory was put in place so that travellers, airline crew and airlines where made aware of the outbreak and told to report anyone displaying the symptoms of the virus. (Who.int, 2017) Quarantine, the isolation of asymptomatic individuals who are thought to be incubating infection, was a prominent control strategy used, which successful controlled the spread of the disease. Currently there is no confirmed treatment or vaccine that works for every case of SARS. Over time the body s immune system and in particular the third line of defence produces the effective B cell (antibody) which can kill the virus. The presence of the virus will be detected and phagocytes engulf invading virus cells and mark them as forging material otherwise known as antigens. B cells notice that the antigens have been presented on the phagocytes and will begin to secrete large quantities of the correct antibodies. This will take time as SARS is a new form of virus and has not infected human ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 45. Analysis Of The Military Intervention In Syria In this article, Bellamy explores the argument that the failure to intervene in Syria is due to the controversies in Libya. Bellamy argues that there is no substantial evidence to backup this line of reasoning. Bellamy contends that the reason behind the UN paralysis on Syria is credited to the politics surrounding the conflict than the concerns about R2P. Although the main argument of this article is focused on the political issues surrounding the R2P in Syria, the main part I will draw from this article is its discussion on the military aspect between Syria and Russia. Similar to Stent (2016) this article overlooks other aspects that have contributed to the inaction of the UN and international community towards Syria. However, Bellamy ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The main limitation of this article is that it was unable to provide a sound reason of how a UN resolution would have transformed the situation as long as military means are not incorporated. Nonetheless, this article s argument is useful as supplementary information for my research essay since it confirms how significant the role of state s strategic and geopolitical position play when it comes to deciding whether to intervene or not. Paris, R 2014, The Responsibility to Protect and the Structural Problems of Preventive Humanitarian Intervention, International Peacekeeping, vol. 21 no. 5, pp. 569 603. In this article, Paris examines the assumed link between military intervention and the desired result of preventing or ending mass atrocities. Paris uses the case study of Libya as an example to point out the five fundamental structural problems in this logic of military intervention to end the killing of civilians. This article is useful for my essay since the article provides a counterargument against academics that argue in defence of the R2P. The argument highlights how most literature on R2P is focused on the normative and legal issues, rather than focusing on the practical complexities of how an armed intervention could protect civilians in conflict. Moreover, he provides a good explanation about how the non consensus on the Syrian matter can be credit to the debated legality of humanitarian intervention and R2P. The ... The first Republican to serve as governor of the state, he became known as the father of the Republican Party in Kentucky. After a well received speech seconding the presidential nomination of Ulysses S. Grant at the 1880 Republican National Convention, he was nominated for governor in 1887. He lost the general election that year, but won in 1895, capitalizing on divisions in the Democratic Party over the issue of free silver. His term was marked by political struggles and violence. He advanced the status of black citizens, but was unable to enact much of his reform agenda over a hostile Democratic majority. He was elected by the state legislature to the U.S. Senate in 1907, when voting was deadlocked and the Democratic candidate, outgoing Governor J. C. W.
