In Catch 22, Joseph Heller creates a surreal world of irrationality to illuminate madness and corruption. Through the satirical
characterizations of the novel s leaders, Heller criticizes not just the institution of war but all forms of bureaucratic
establishment. The authority figures in the novel are portrayed as selfish and deranged maniacs without any sense of morality,

The most illuminating symbol of a corrupt authority s skewing of reason is Catch 22, the only one catch (Heller 55). This law is
cited several times throughout the novel by Yossarian s officers to curtail soldier s rights; however, the most fitting summary is
given by the old woman in Rome, who concludes that the law constitutes the military authority s right to do anything [others]
can t stop them from doing (Heller 417). Catch 22 is ultimately whatever the administration wants it to be; it is one of their tools
for manipulating concepts of logic, morality, and law into their favor.

Hardline conservatives like Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell opposed the Freedom Act as they defended mass

Online Shopping Disadvantages
Many of people do their shopping online because it is convenient, cost effective, and offers more selection of products rather
than going into a physical brick and mortar store. Seemingly, the only downside is the shipping time, but the real cost is that it is
gradually killing off local businesses such as the mom and pop shops, department stores, and also shopping malls. These
physical stores provide tax base and jobs within their communities. Online retailers largely have minimal overhead, and drive
prices down lower than what most brick and mortar stores can bare. Online sales have many economic benefits that brick and
mortar stores don t have, which has created an environment where online entities thrive while unintentionally causing their
brick and mortar counterparts to fail in many cases.
Online retail shopping has grown dramatically over the past years; more and more, people are relying on their fingertips to do
the shopping rather than using their legs. Barbara Mantel, a writer for the CQ Research states that, online shopping has grown
fourfold since 2002 and now accounts for about 10 percent of discretionary retail spending in the United States. (par. 1). If
people continue shop online, it will continue the pressure on and tension between brick and mortar and online stores, resulting
in more failures of brick and mortar stores. An example of this growth is that the number of consumers spent shopping with
their smartphones jumped 385 percent between February 2010 and February 2013 says Mantel. (par. 14). This number is
proving that online retailers are gaining momentum, whereas the mom and pop shops are declining.
Many stores are already feeling the effects of online shopping. Big department stores like Sears, Kmart, Macy s, and J.C.
Penney have filed bankruptcy. According to The Independent, about 300 retail businesses went bust just between January and
June of this year. Online shopping isn t the only reason that they re closing down, but it does play a significant role in their

In Jack London s book, The Sea Wolf, the reader has been given a very interesting view on what would be a minority in the
society of the time. The book takes place on a sealing ship in the Pacific Ocean in the early 20th century. The sailors on these
sealing vessels were a brutal group of men. They were frequently getting into fights with one another and behaving in a beastly
manner. One would wonder though, whether or not the men are actually animals. The rest of the civilized world, at this point in
time, did not behave in this beastly behavior. Perhaps, the beastly or primeval behavior is in all people and the ability to contain
or smother it is what makes them human. Then would that it possible that some men are animals and others are not? For it
would seem, that in this novel, that some men can control their primeval side and others cannot. Also it may be possible that one
s own self can either evolve or devolve out of or into the primeval state due to the pressure of his environment. Are men
animals? This question can be a hard subject to approach today because many people have many different beliefs and
experiences that would lead to them to one idea or the other. In the novel, however, there seems to be a leaning towards the idea

Oskar And The Eight Blessings Analysis
Oskar and the Eight Blessings was a short picture book originally written by Tanya and Richard Simon. The play, however, was
directed and choreographed by Marcie Shapiro. It took place on December 8th and 9th, in the Mountain View Center of
Performing Arts, and used the second stage.
The play began in Germany, a few days before Hanukkah, and ended in New York, on the first day of Hanukkah. The first scene
showed a young Jewish boy named Oskar (played by a girl) and his parents lighting the Menorah. Right after this, their house
was invaded by the Nazi s. In order to protect their child, Oskar s parents sent him to New York to live with his aunt. Armed
with only a picture of his relative and barely any money in his pocket, Oskar boarded a ferry and arrived in America. Once
there, he received eight blessings , or people showing compassion during the holiday season.
A young actor named Naomi Shanson played Oskar, and her performance was incredible. The play did not have many lines;
instead, it had a lot of background music. Due to this, everyone in the cast, especially the main character, had to be extra
expressive. Naomi did this amazingly; she conveyed intense feelings of sadness, wonder, relief and nervousness clearly, while
barely speaking. Something that really struck me was how she used her entire body to show emotion. For example, she swung
her arms, skipped and tilted her head side to side to show excitement when it snowed. In another scene, Naomi had just been
