Research Assignment On High Fructose Corn Syrup

Eating in America

Research Assignment: High Fructose Corn Syrup
BEWARE: HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP As Americans we are certainly used to opening
our kitchen cabinets and having it be filled with endless food choices. To say the least, we are
certainly blessed as a country to be able to have a wide variety. Although the choices are endless,
unlike other countries, we are unsure of the additives that are being put into our foods. One specific
food additive that is constantly seen in our labels is High Fructose Corn Syrup. High Fructose Corn
Syrup can be defined as a cheap sweetener that is made from corn starch in which it is processed
by glucose isomerase. This specific additive is currently apart of the top eleven most controversial
food additives. High Fructose Corn Syrup, is being blamed for the obesity epidemic in the United
States of America. I am here to prove through research and personal findings, that this is an additive
that we most avoid. But when it comes to sodas and desserts sweetened with high fructose corn
syrup, she believes in abstinence, not moderation (King). High fructose Corn Syrup has become a
growing issue in the United States of America. This is seen through many statistics, one being the
fact that we are the number one country for this usage. The best way High Fructose Corn Syrup
can be described was in the article written by Patricia King entitled, Blaming it on corn syrup; Its
increased use

Ground Water Contamination and Household Response in...
There are two sources of drinking water, surface water and ground water and they are each
managed, monitored and regulated differently even though the actual water systems are interrelated
and integrated. The state of Missouri has historically had plenty of high quality fresh water sources;
in the northern half of the state most of the drinking watercomes from surface water while the
majority of the southern population gets water from underground aquifers (Missouri Department
of Natural Resources, 2010). The Missouri River and its alluvium wells provide more than half of
the state s residents with drinking water as most of the urban centers in the state are located along
its course. Water from wells located adjacent to the Missouri River... Show more content on

The contamination was ultimately found to be Escherichia coli 0157:H7 commonly referred to as
E. coli or EC0157. Investigations by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the
Missouri state and county public health departments determined the most probable source of
contamination was leakage of sewage near broken water main lines that then entered the drinking
water distribution system (Swerdlow et al, 1992). According to the report by Swerdlow et al
(1992), this particular incident had the distinction of being not only the largest incidence of
EC0157 infection at that time but also the first due to a multiple resistant organism, and the first
documented to be transmitted by water (Swerdlow et al, 1992, p. 818). Testing of water taken
directly from the wells in Cabool revealed the water contamination did not occur in the ground
water itself but was initiated in and then distributed via the water supply system. The Cabool
contamination could have been prevented had the town followed the recommended standard
procedure of hyperchlorination immediately after water line breaks or repairs (Swerdlow et el,
1992). It is common for water systems to have small leaks but they usually do not result in
contamination as the positive flow of water pressure prevents inward infiltration of the system but
when there are breaks in the lines and pressure is lost, contamination can flow back into the water
lines.

Technological Change Moves Faster Than Bureaucracy
Technological change moves much faster than bureaucracy, and it is the patent office that must
bear the collision of novelty and government for anyone who wishes to profit from their genius
must go there to have their constitutional right to the proceeds from it verified. Exactly what
technology can be patented in this day and age, as our bodies and proteins become subject to
technology themselves, is indeed in need of some clarification. Today scientific advances allow us
to look into the deepest codes that create our bodies our genes. With a small sample scientists can
isolate the miniscule structure of just a single gene and analyze it for every divergence it displays
in an individual as compared to the normal human population.... Show more content on

Smith Pharmaceuticals is one of these corporations. Over several years, they spent hundreds of
millions of dollars on research perfecting the method to synthesize and analyze cDNA
complementary DNA in the genes LIF and LCK. Mutations in these two genes, as Smith
discovered, correlated with and were highly indicative of an increased risk of leukemia. Smith filed
a patent on these genes and the process of the diagnostic test, and has since benefited over one
million potential leukemia patients with a diagnostic that allows them to take preemptive strikes
against the disease the average cost of leukemia in the Netherlands is $104,386 (de Uyl et al.), and
one treatment in the United States costs $178,000 (Chen), while Smith s test is under $4000, and
usually insurance eligible under new Federal law, qualifying as preventative care. As the Economist
puts it succinctly, the point of a patent is to encourage innovation by giving inventors a limited
period of exclusive control over the fruits of their labour, (April 2013). Smith invested these large
sums into identifying this gene under the assumption that it would make profit off of these tests
due to its rights over the information it gathers and, important to note, it would not have done so
without this financial motivation. Otherwise, it is highly plausible that LIF and LCK s benefits
would lie undiscovered even today, and the one million patients tested at under $4000 would all be
undergoing $178000

The Epidemic Of The Ebola Virus
Science has offered mankind various alternative methods to stop diseases from invading the human
body. Whether, it be a vaccine, a pill, or various collaborative methods, mankind is in the pursuit
of controlling and isolating the Ebola virus disease. Ebola is a disease that not only consumes the
lives of many, but also consumes the infrastructure of many villages, towns, and their way of life.
The Ebolavirus is one of the most dangerous diseases because it suppresses the immune system,
damages the vascular system, leads to multiple organ failure, and hemorrhagic fever along with
a chain of various other symptoms. It is not one single phase of Ebola that has up to a 90 percent
mortality rate 1, but a wave of multiple body systems failures that disintegrates the human body
as a whole. The virus ability to attack the human body has driven man to expand on various new
methods to counteract the destruction it has had on the Central and Western African.
Understanding the Ebola virus disease, its strains, and its ability to suppress the immune system,
has driven the collaboration of health organizations to design and implement projects that will
control and reduce the spread of Ebola. The Ebola virus belongs to a family of negative strand
RNA viruses called Filoviridae, which are classified as Zoonotic diseases 2. Zoonotic diseases are
caused by animals that contain the virus within them. There are a total of four Ebola species
grouped as Filoviridae that can cause the

Analysis Of Jimmy Santiago Baca Poetry As Lifesaver
In the profile article Jimmy Santiago Baca: Poetry as Lifesaver author Rob Baker, who also is a
creative writing and English teacher proves to not only the readers but also the National Council
of Teachers of English the significance of poetry. The authors main point is that poetry saved
Jimmy Santiago Baca s life, he shows us how by explaining the emotions when Baca began to read
poetry; he then went on to write poetry and even publish his own works while still in prison, after
Baca s release, he became a dedicated teacher who also works with gangmembers and teaches
workshops. The author starts by explaining Baca s background he tells the audience the difficult
circumstances that were Baca s life. All circumstances considered into his young adulthood Baca
could hardly read nor write and truly had no desire to learn; Which makes it even more spectacular
that he found poetry. His interest began at twenty one when Baca was in prison, sentenced to
possibly five to ten years. A couple years passed and a church program had extended a relationship
via a letter they sent, they targeted prisoners without families. Unbeknownst Baca learned through
steady communication with the church how to read and write. The writinggave him something to
do and in a sense a purpose. Shortly into their connection, the man from the church introduced to a
friend who was a poet. After this moment Baca s life would never be the same. I believe

The Reality Of Women s Soccer
Isabel Cesarotti Dr. Barron ENC 1101 12 September 2016 The Reality of Women s Soccer One
of the clearest memories I have is of the day when my mom sat me down, looked me in the eye
and said to me that as a women in this world, I was going to have to work ten times harder as any
man to command respect. She told me that as a woman in this world, there are certain
inevitabilities I have to accept. The main one is that life is unfair. She said that accomplishments
are inevitably going to be handed to men that you feel you worked hard for and deserved. This,
she said, was going to sometimes make me feel outraged or bitter, and oftentimes make me feel
worthless. She said, however, the most important thing that I must do is simply put away my
pride, roll my shoulders, stiffen my lip and work harder than anyone. In that way, I can succeed.
But what if after succeeding, after working harder, longer and more intensely than everyone
else, you achieve the most you can in your career and realize that your hard work is
meaningless? Meaningless because you simply do not get the same respect as your male
counterparts. Many professional woman soccer players are currently experience this heart
wrenching feeling. This is because it is painfully clear: women soccer players are not getting the
same level of respect as their male counterparts. The first World Cup was held in July of 1930 and
it exclusively hosted men. Since then, women footballers have been championing for women s

The Influence Of The Bobo Doll Experiment
In the contemporary world, there are several considerations regarding the impact of social
influences on the development and growth of a child s temperament and morality.
Television, computer games, food additives, music and the lack of role models are all cited as
reasons for a supposed breakdown in society, and an hyperbolic tendency towards violence.
These concerns have existed for several years, even before the media turned these factors into
sensationalist stories, to try and sell a lot ofnewspapers. During the 1960 s, there was a lot of
concern and dialogue regarding whether or not a child s development was right down tobiological
science, environmental factors or social learning from others around them.
For this purpose, Bandura designed the Bobo Doll Experiment to try ... Show more content on

very interested in foreign relations and the technology of modern day war. I have read stories by
Edgar Allen Poe, with suspense and vivid imagery, which reminded me of Clancy s work. I
decided to choose Tom Clancybecause of his talent to weave such realistic tales of international
suspense. Clancy creates the scenes in his books with such detail, it makes the reader feel like he

In the past 5 years, Clancy had some difficulty in his personal life. In 1995, Wanda Thomas filed
for divorce. She had found out that Clancy had been having an affair with a woman named
Katherine Huang. The tank that stood on their lawn was then seen as a metaphor for their years

televison reporter. He had been introduced to Llewellyn by one of her relatives, retired Gen.
Colin Powell. The two got married on Saturday June 26, 1999, and are now living happily
together in Clancy s estate on the Chesapeake Bay. Wanda Thomas received custody of the
children, while Clancy pays $6,500 a month is child support, a payment that he considers to be a
very serious one. Clancy has a firm belief in the importance of family, Family is the beginning
and end of everything that we are supposed to be working for (Greenberg 65). Clancy believes
even stronger in the role of the father though, having been quoted saying, If you don t take care

Religion in America, 1492-1790
Religion in the New World exploded into the land with the colonization of thousands of immigrants.
It played an important role in the development of thought in the West. Religion was one of the first
concepts to spark the desires of people from other countries to emigrate to the new lands. While
many religions blossomed on the
American shores of the Atlantic, a basic structure held for most of them, being predominantly
derived from
Puritanism. Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement, showed the link the new settlers
had to God when Sir Thomas Dale said the following in 1610: Be not dismayed at all For scandall

Confession,
Penance, Confirmation, Ordination, Marriage, Confession, and Last Rites were all looked upon as
invented by man.
The Puritans therefore considered these ceremonies not
Holy. The Puritans (Johnson, p.1) also rejected the
Catholic and Anglican Church s hierarchy and even their worship of symbols such as the cross,
statues, and stained glass windows. By 1630, Puritanism ruled New
England almost entirely. Massachusetts, Connecticut, and
New Hampshire were some of the colonies that relied on
Puritanism. As Samuel Eliot Morison states, New
Englanders, however they differed in property and occupation, had a common belief in the Bible as
the guide to life, and a uniform method of land division and settlement, (Morison, pg.167).
Governments based on the ideals of the religion represented in the town were emerging all over
the newly shaping country. The great majority of emigrants to New England were middle class
farmers, tradesmen and artisans. Since Puritanism did not condemn manual labor as some
religions did, and since every man no matter how poor could vote if he joined the church,
independent yeoman farmers quickly became the backbone of the community. In 1632, in the
northern part of Virginia, an Anglican colony, Charles I cut a slice of land for his friend, Lord
Baltimore. Charles I intended to give Lord

Theodore Roosevelt And The Cuban War
The most important person in American history is Theodore Roosevelt. During his life, he made a
great impact on America. Roosevelt was the 26th president and fought in the Spanish American
War, also known as the Cuban War. He was the most influential person who supported the
completion of construction of the Panama Canal. One of the first and most important National
Parks, Theodore RooseveltNational Park in western North Dakota, was named after him too.
During his presidency, he inspired many. If it was not for Theodore Roosevelt, our society
would not be as advanced as it is today. Theodore was born on October 27, 1858. He was six
when President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated, and he watched the funeral procession from
his grandfather s house in New York City. As a child, he was sickly and weak, and suffered from
dangerous asthma. Part of the 4th generation of Roosevelts in this country, his boyhood nickname
was Teedie. . Teedie spent most of his free time collecting dead animals or animal skeletons trying
to form a small museum he set up in a nursery with his cousins. This was around the time when he
was starting to become interested in science. Zoology was his favorite science subject.
He left for Europe for a few years. Bored from the traveling, Theodore decided to play with his

Prisons are designed to confine individuals convicted of committing crimes. These facilities are
used to rehabilitate offenders while keeping them isolated from the community so they can do no
more harm to law abiding citizens. The goal of jails and prisons are to simply keep offenders from
committing more crimes while encouraging them to become productive members of society.
Traditional forms of corrections consist of prisontime, restitution, probation or parole. However,
there are some non traditional methods as well such as alternative sentencing.

Rehabilitation focuses on making the convicted offender a changed member of society and able to
live amongst lawful citizens. Prison, county jails and other alternatives ultimate goal is to reform
offenders so they will not commit any more crimes and can be sent back into the real world. The
intended goals are the same, but with the alternatives the offender just gets to reform his or herself
outside of a prison cell.
Data that supports incarceration or some other methods of punishment varies within jurisdictions.
Joel Caplan s research said There has been some evidence that successful paroles are increasing in
certain jurisdictions; or rather, that failure rates are declining in certain states (Austin, 2001). This
could be because once an individual gets a look at prison life and their freedom and rights are
stripped away that is enough to humble a person and make them want to change and be free again.
Freedom from prison can uplift a person and individuals strive for the right to become members
of society again (Caplan, 2006). Someone granted parole can fail to successfully blend back into
his or her community. Sometimes when individuals are fresh out of prison it is harder for
previously convicted criminals to get jobs or even be accepted by society again. Ignoring the
potential of rehabilitated ex offenders and withholding resources such as the opportunity to have a

Resolved that Fracking for Natural Gas from Shale...
Definition of Terms
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Fracking, or Hydraulic Fracturing
is a method used to extract underground resources including oil, natural gas, and geothermal energy
by injecting high pressure fluid into a geologic formation containing oil or natural gas deposits.
The high pressure fluid opens up existing fractures and creates new fracture systems that allow the
resources that were once trapped to move more freely into a production well for further extraction.
Shale gas is defined by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) as natural gas that is
trapped within shale formations. Shale formations are geologic formations that contain hydrocarbon

The lack of credible and accessible information available inhibits our ability to fully understand
the impact of hydraulic fracturing on freshwater resources in the U.S. The recent boom in shale
gas production using hydraulic fracturing techniques has raised concern about the potential for
groundwater contamination. Fissures created by high pressure fracking fluid to increase gas
flow to the well also create pathways for leakage and consequent contamination of groundwater
(Yu et al. 2014). Boreholes drilled for well access must pass through shallower strata, which may
contain groundwater aquifers, before reaching target natural gas reservoirs (Davies et al. 2014).
Passing through shallow layers of strata introduces a potential source of contamination to
groundwater resources (Davies et al. 2014). Leakage into groundwater wells can occur due to
poor well completion practices, the corrosion of steel casing, and the deterioration of cement
during production of shale gas (Davies et al. 2014). Therefore, shale gas well integrity is important
in reducing contamination events. Lack of integrity at shale gas well sites has resulted in several
contamination events such as blowouts and gas venting due to fluid leaking. In Pennsylvania
between 2008 and 2011, there were 85

As rational human beings, they are already close to the idea that a new political candidate
running for any government position who is not from a political clan or who s family names do
not possesspower will not be able to give them the kind reassurance that they will be able to
execute the type of leadership that we want the voters think that this can only be realized and
only be done by someone from a political name. Since having the power and title for the name is
one of the factors for the citizen s choice of voting a person and in this area only the political
clan can give out proof as to what they are able to offer to the people. As you look at it in other
persons perspective you might give the fault and pin point it to the voters for placing those same

rational in their choices by placing those people in power in which they can get most of benefit

this seems like power is only vested upon this people the politics is not totally close only to these

norms, boundaries and laws on how people act should accordingly, certain aspects of criminal
deviant behaviour continue to stay. Although some researcher s characteristic human aggression to
human nature as part of a natural innate instinct which they have no control other, that can make
one prone to deviant behaviour, while the others are more likely to commit crimes. While others
tend to look at other factors which all amount to crime and deviant behaviour. This essay aims to
look at in depth at how biological and physiological theories explain crime.
According to biological theories of crime, deviant behaviour is an innate thing. It assumes that some

All the theories are based on the idea that biological markers foreordain deviant behaviour. The
base of all these theories is that genetic factors or any abnormalities that are inherited or acquired
throughout life, predispose individuals to the criminal behaviour. Initially it was claimed by
Lombroso s (1876) that people were prone to participate in deviant behaviour and that these
specific people all displayed physiognomic features or abnormalities. He suggested that all
criminals shared common facial features for example; asymmetry of one s face, the shape of their
skulls, big ears eyes and lips and a twisted nose (SimplyPyschology, 2016). Although Lombroso s
theory was deemed relevant at the time, it today appears to be slightly absurd, and his theory is
evidentially extremely flawed. Firstly, many convicted criminals have perfectly symmetrical faces,

Anthropology And The Study Of Culture
1.Anthropology and the Study of Culture
a.The field of anthropology that I find to be most interesting is anthropological linguistics.
Personally, I believe this subdivision is so interesting because it is so diverse and covers so
much ground on how our language and others have evolved over time. Ranging from early cave
writings, to sign language, to the language and slang we all know and use today, language
among not only our cultures but also others have vastly changed and there is proof of this that
dates back to ancient times. The mere complexity of our current language is beyond what past
civilizations could have even imagined it would come to be. What I find to be very interesting
is the fact that even today our upbringing, social class, or cultural norms, can define how we
speak. For instance, there are certain slangs or terms that someone may say because they were
brought up around people who spoke using that kind of language. While this is true for some, but
not all, children of an upper class parents may grow up speaking very formally, and be taught to
not use any slang or vulgar words. They continue using this vocabulary further on in life because it
is what they were taught to do. This can also be applied to any other social class, or even differ
between people from different geographic locations. Linguistics is often learned and adopted from
generation to generation and from civilization to civilization.

The Missouri River s the longest river in North America. It starts in Western Montana and ends
North of St. Louis, Missouri. Most people think that the Missouri River was made over 30 million

Each female fly can lay over 9,000 eggs. The eggs are white and are about 1.2 mm in length.
Within a day, the larvae (maggots) hatch from the eggs; they live and feed in (usually dead and
decaying) organic material, such as garbage or faeces. They are pale whitish, 3 9 mm long,
thinner at the mouth end, and have no legs. At the end of their thirdinstar, the maggots crawl to a

The adults live from half a month to a month in the wild, or longer in benign laboratory conditions.

A Brief Note On Rough Draft Cryogenic Preservation
Rough Draft Cryogenic Preservation Imagine if one is struck with a life threatening disease and
they were just at the start of developing themselves and striving for their aspirations. A 14 year
old girl in the UK was diagnosed with cancer and she had the desire to live longer but knew she
could not. She found hope in a future life when she discovered an alternative to death, which was
cryogenic preservation, and she wishes that with this process, once revival, she would be cured
from her cancer (Bowcott). Cryopreservationis a new discovery that should be morally accepted as

Vitrification helps to keep the organs and cells frozen in a glass state without the formation of
water. With improvements upon the procedure, it will help to make the outcome of revival more
possible. The organization, Alcor, also discovered that with cryonics, damaged tissues and diseases
that was the cause of the death, could be repaired and cured, so that when the person comes back
to life, they will be free from the harm (Alcor). This would help with research on incurable
diseases, such as cancer, and since the person is legally dead, there will not be issues in treating
the fractured part of the body that caused the death. With the much improved techniques and
benefits under cryopreservation, it is to be deemed as a reasonable, worthwhile experiment.
People ethically choose the option of having their body cryopreserved after death upon
experimentation. The idea of revival after death goes against many people s ethics. In a bioethics
research library at the University of Georgetown, it found that there are theological concerns
involving the soul and what would happen to it as the body is under cryopreservation and the
body s revival after death (Bioethics). The people who have the concerns can choose to not be
cryopreserved and die normally because it is an option. There is

The Legend of Big Tree Warrior
The Legend of Big Tree Warrior
Once there was a great Native Indian tribe named Impauwaka, known for their gift of the most
fertile land of the Earth. They were lead by a strong, brave, yet quiet leader named Big Tree
Warrior, whose ancestors led their civilization to beautiful land countless moons ago. Young
children cleaned fresh vegetables by wide open fields of golden grains. Fathers hunted at dusk on
the distant planes, when the buffalo were lulled into peaceful rest by the glorious sunset. Every
piece of the buffalo was used to please the Earth. Mothers fixed hide into cloaks for each member
of the village. Sons took hatches to the trees, bringing back enough wood for the evening fire.

Soon, the cattle groups were vanishing nearly as instantaneously as the trees were chopped. Fields
of grain lost their nutrients from overuse, turning the once rich, dark brown soil to dust. With the
loss of the land and all of its resources, the Impauwaka people fell into a deep famine. Chief Leader,
Big Tree Warrior, finally rose from his tent and ordered the tribe to pack up their little
belongings they had left. The Impauwakans were in shock for only two of the oldest tribal
members have ever heard him speak. Because of this, they knew that what he was planning must
have been important. He led them out of familiar grounds into crowded forests and large fields,
forcing their pace into a sprint in the darkness and a quick tread upon sunrise. Over time, his
people grew weaker and weaker as the moons turned on, but the tribe knew better than to disobey
their leader. So, they pressed on with increasingly heavy legs and cramping stomachs. That is,
until young Tall Drum became the first to consult the great Chief. They passed over a soft plot
of green earth when the little boy asked, Big Tree Warrior, let us live here. The ground is soft and
good. We will live strong again. Let us settle here. Big Tree Warrior s only response was a slight
pause followed by a faster tread.
Every morning and every night, Tall Drum repeated these questions to Big Tree Warrior.

The p2p file sharing method makes large networks in which nodes share files directly with each

In disconnected MANET, p2p file sharing systems is based on two methods flooding based and

Considering the magnitude of the ageing population and socio economic changes around the world,
measures to keep older people healthy and active are of utmost importance. (WHO, 2007). In most
developed countries, population aging is a gradual process and most of the older adults live
independently. Traditionally it was the responsibility of the family to care for older adults. We
find ourselves in a care giving crisis as roles are changing, employment of women taking a major
role, erosion of traditional family values, and an increasing trend for nuclear families. (Dsouza,
2014). The number of older adults living alone is increasing. Older adults are living both in
residential care facilities or nursing homes and most often on their own in communities for the
aged. It is estimated that more than 50% of those living in nursing homes and residential
facilities fall every year and about 50% of these fall repeatedly. (CMS, 2014). The actual
incidence is likely to be even higher, since many falls are not reported. Falls often lead to reduced
functioning, which increases morbidity and mortality. Around 20% of falls need medical attention,
5 10% result in fractures (with one in five of these being a hip fracture), severe head injuries and
joint distortions, and 5 10% in soft tissue contusions hcdxd lacerations. Fall induced injuries are the

Significance Of Silence In Night By Elie Wiesel
Silence!
With nobody to speak out and help those in need, how was Elie Wiesel and his father going to
survive the camps? Elie and his father are apart of a jewish family in the 1940 s. That means
they would be sent to a concentration camp. Hitler is in power and is conducting a genocide
against jews. Throughout the book you notice the theme silence being used. Wiesel wanted his
audience to know that not only were the Jewish people in camps silenced, but the world around
them was silenced as well. He illustrates that nobody spoke out to help the millions of dying
people that were being punished (for no reason) and nobody that was being punished was allowed
to speak out or the punishment worsened. He shows silence in several different ways including
symbolism, foreshadowing, and diction to exemplify the theme in the book Night by Elie Wiesel.
The first time you see silence in Night is when Wiesel foreshadows by saying, Even Moishe the
Beadle had fallen silent. (8). He indicates that silence will be a theme by saying Moishe had fallen
silent after he returned from a camp for immigrant jews. He foreshadows yet again on page 26

Environmental Challenges Facing The American Auto Industry
Written Assignment Unit 5 Environmental challenges facing the American auto industry The
American auto industry has been in existence since 1896 when Henry Ford built his first car. He
then invented the assembly line which allowed for the production of multiple cars, and this made
the price of cars more affordable to buyers. By the 1920s, the assembly line concept of production
was used by the largest auto companies in the United States, namely Ford, General Motors and
Chrysler. The auto industry has always been faced with environmental and hazardous issues. Such
issues include global competition, new technology for powering the product that this industry
produces, and the effect of emissions on the environment. Global competition In 1995, a trade
agreement was made between the United States and Japan. Because of this agreement, Japanese
cars became more readily available in the USA, directly competing with American brands such as
Ford, Chrysler, and General Motors. Additionally, Japanese dealer outlets established a recognizable
presence in the USA, making replacement parts easily available. This helped to increase
competition since it provided an incentive for Americans to purchase Japanese cars. Moreover, even
in other markets, American car companies failed to maintain their previously strong position as
countries such as India, China, and South Korea were also into the manufacturing of automobiles.
Even though these countries were proving competition to the

The Reasons Why United Airlines

Personal Growth, Aviation Maintenance, Aviation Maintenance Management, and Aviation
Maintenance Safety.
To understand the reason why United Airlines (UAL) decided to implement SMS, we need to go
back and analyzed its system before it implemented SMS and also after it was implemented. To do
so, we will use critical thinking which is a disciplined process that consists of applying, and
evaluating data. According to the 2014 Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)
record, before SMS was instituted at UAL, the recordable injury rate, the lost time injury, and the
aircraft damage rate were very high. But with SMS, everything started going down. For example,
in 2014 the recordable injury rate was down by 4 percent as compared to the previous year, the
lost time injury and its performing decreased by almost 24 percent. Also, the aircraft damage
decreased by five percent. As we all can see, before SMS, United had some serious problem keeping
up with safety and aircraft damages, but after SMS, we have seen some tremendous improvement in
the way they managed their safety. Now, to demonstrate the importance of the application of SMS
within UAL, the student will use quantitative reasoning, information literacy and scientific literacy.
Quantitative reasoning is defined as the ability to use technology, and current techniques to
interpret information to solve related problems.

Describe The Main Functions Of The Trachea
The nose and the nasal cavity form the main external opening for air to come through. The air that
comes through is warmed and filtered by the mucus.
The mouth is the secondary external opening for the respiratory tract. It does not have the hair and
sticky mucus that filter air passing through the nasal cavity but its shorter distance and bigger space
allows more air to quickly enter the body.
The nasal cavity is a hollow space within the nose and skull that is lined with hairs and mucus
membrane. The nasal cavity warms, moisturizes, and filters air that enters the body. Hairs and
mucus inside the nasal cavity also help to trap dust before it enters the body.
The air that we breathe in through the nose or mouth, travels through the larynx, down the
windpipe, and then into the lungs. The larynx contains muscle called vocal cords. When we try to
speak, the cords come together, and vibrate as we breathe out. This is what gives us our voice. ...

What Are The Causes Of The Age Of Exploration
The Age of Exploration, starting from the 15th century and lasting until the beginning of the 17th

In the beginning of the 16th century, the importation of gold was close to zero but a century after

sending missionaries to convert and conquistadors to kill the native population and use their lands.
The whole scheme of the Europeans was created by the desire to import more resources in their

The Mandlebaum Gate is a novel by Muriel Spark set in the territories of Jerusalem and Jordan
during the Eichmann Trials. Within the novel there is a character Barbara Vaughan who is a
Gentile Jewess. She travels within Israel and Jordan on a pilgrimage to see the holy shrines and
has various adventures and encounters during her trip. It is clear from the first few pages of the
novel that Jewish identity is a key theme and continues to be as such throughout.

As soon as Barbara reveals her identity Freddy immediately begins to take note of the Jewishness
of her appearance, something dark and intense beyond her actual shape and colouring [6] and
seems to feel uncomfortable with her until he is able to share an
English giggle with her about the wine served in Jerusalem, which is always lukewarm. This
reaction to Judaism by Freddy suggests it is something to be ashamed of or uncomfortable with,
although as the novel progresses it seems as though Freddy is more at ease with Jews.
It has been suggested that the inclusion of seemingly straightforward characters such as Freddy

This disruption heightens the sense of conflict which radiates from Barbara

The second chapter of The Mandlebaum Gate is titled Barbara

Obesity is one of the major risk factors for gallstones, especially in women. A large clinical study
showed that being even moderately overweight increases one s risk for developing gallstones.
Secondly, excess estrogen from pregnancy, hormone replacement therapy or birth control pills
appears to increase cholesterol levels in bile and decrease gallbladder movement, both of which can
lead to gallstones.
Ethnicity is another important factor. According to scientists, Native Americans have a genetic
predisposition to secrete high levels of cholesterol in bile. In fact, they have the highest rates of
gallstones in the United States. A majority of Native American men have gallstones by age 60.
Among the Pima Indians of Arizona, 70 percent of women have gallstones by age 30. Mexican
Americans men and women of all ages also have high rates of gallstones.
The fourth factor is Cholesterol lowering drugs. Drugs that lower cholesterol levels in blood
actually increase the amount of cholesterol secreted in bile. This in turn can increase the risk of
gallstones.
Another factor is rapid weight loss. As the body metabolizes fat during rapid weight loss, it causes
the liver to secrete extra cholesterol into bile, which can cause gallstones.
Gallstones may sometimes cause certain symptoms. These symptoms include Chronic Indigestion,
which have symptoms such as nausea, heartburn and bloating.
Sudden, steady and

Theatre Critique Of Friday Night Cafe s The Yellow Wallpaper
Theatre Critique of Tuesday Night CafГ© s The Yellow Wallpaper
Even before taking their seats in the theatre the audience is transported into the constraining and
chaotic mind of our protagonist, Jane. Jane has been locked in in a room with yellow wallpaper by
her husband as treatment for her hysteria. Her hysteria is played by a nameless character beside her.
In combination with symbolic blocking, the set and dГ©cor of this production create the perfect
environment to capture the inner turmoil of Jane and her relationship with the madness.
One expects when walking past the doors of a theatre to encounter a stage and perhaps someplace to
sit. However, when walking through the theatre doors one is confronted by a fabric wall and a
dark hallway created by hanging pieces of yellow curtains and blankets stitched together with
visible seams and patterns overlapping haphazardly. The people you saw enter before you
disappear and you re confronted by the question of where to go next. You walk along the dark
makeshift hallway until you find an open wooden door, through which you finally see the stage
and realize that you were only a few feet away from it the entire time. This makes up the audience s
first interaction with the The Yellow Wallpaper.
This design choice was a seamless way to draw audiences into the story and the mindset of the
characters within the play. In surrounding the stage and audience with the yellow wallpaper the
theatre experience becomes more intimate.

Henry David Thoreau s Letter From The Birmingham Jail
In Henry David Thoreau s Resistance to Civil Government he wrote a letter which became an
academic lecture. This lecture was about his objection to paying the poll tax because of the
government s involvement in slavery and the Mexican war. For refusing to pay the poll tax, he had
to spend a night in jail. Martin Luther King wrote A Letter from the Birmingham Jail when he spent
eleven days there charged with demonstrating without a permit. He wrote his open letter in
response to criticism from clergy who criticized his protest methods. The two letters are the same
because they are both written in support of civil disobediencewhen it comes to bad actions by the
state. Differences in the letters concern their call to action, and the tone of urgency. Both Thoreau
and King believed that individuals should follow their conscience when they believe the state does
unethical acts. Thoreau protested the Mexican War and Slavery in the United States. King protested
Jim Crow laws in the south that were part of segregation and discrimination against blacks.
Similarly, both men also spent... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He wants the government to do a better job and he is anti war and abolitionist but he is more of
a writer and a loner compared to King. King was a true leader and organizer of people who
sought direct action for immediate harms to himself and his black brothers and sisters. In fact, his
letter written in the Birmingham jail was an answer to critics who said his protests were too
direct and too soon. To them he answered, The purpose of our direct action program is to create a
situation so crisis packed that it will open the door to negotiation. To the issue of timeliness, he
answered, We know through painful experience that freedom is never voluntarily given by the

Paradoxical Vocal Cord And Its Effects On The Emergency...
Paradoxical Vocal Cord Motion Disorder
Vocal Cord Dysfunction
A twenty year old female is admitted to the emergency room with symptoms of respiratory distress.
The symptoms began during a soccer game and came on suddenly. Signs included observed
dyspnea, coughing, wheezing, and signs of cyanosis and chief complaint of shortness of breath.
Patient had previously been diagnosed with exercise induced asthma and has used her Albuterol
inhaler, as instructed, at the time of attack with no relief. The acute attack continues for about 10
more minutes and then the symptoms subside spontaneously and her respiration returns to normal
without any other interventions. Although her symptoms appear to be consistent with an asthma
attack the lack of response to traditional treatments for asthma call for further investigation. Many
individuals who suffer from Paradoxical Vocal Cord Motion Disorder (PVCM) have experienced
this first hand. PVCM is a disorder that closely mimics asthma leading to difficult and often
misdiagnoses, unnecessary interventions and medications. Never heard of PVCM? It was first
noted by Dunglison in 1842 as laryngospasms brought on by hysteria, he called it Hysteria Croup.
In 1869 the closing of the vocal cords during inspiration was first visualize using laryngoscopy and
was determined to be the cause of the stridor heard upon inspiration during an attack (Ibrahim,
Gheriani Raza, 2007). Throughout the past it has been called many names including

Gays in the Media
Gays in the Media Will and Grace is Only the First Step
Bisexual. Gay. Lesbian. These are all words that in today s society are becoming more and more
common to hear. Although just a few years ago hearing these words might have shocked some and
angered many, they are becoming a part of today s norm. People are broadening their views on
sexuality and the possibilities open to them. Being bisexual, gay, or lesbian is slowly becoming
accepted. On television a few years ago, a comedic sitcom Ellen attempted to make gays even more
accepted by casting the main character as a gay woman. Sadly, Ellen failed because viewers weren t
ready for gays to be seen in a comfortable TV setting. The idea was too new and the show was

Will and Grace may be appealing to the viewer if he/she finds the messages of the show to be
challenging the old cultural belief that being gay is not accepted by most in America s society.
It is the first show to have main characters that are gay that is widely watched and accepted. Will
is portrayed as the opposite of what society may find to be stereotypical of a gay man. Will does
not speak with a lisp, he does not use flashy hand gestures, nor does he even appear to be gay.
Rather, he seems to be an average character on a sitcom. Will also is shown to be a fairly
successful lawyer, a respected job title. Throughout the show, Will is never made fun of for
being gay, nor treated differently because of it. His sexuality is not emphasized and this sends
the message to viewers that being gay is normal and that one should not be treated any differently
because of it. This in turn makes gays more accepted overall (surprisingly, since the media is
normally considered demanding and unforgiving). Will and Grace strongly challenges the old
cultural belief by a putting a respectable gay man on a widely accepted series for the first time.
Will and Grace may also have a negative effect on viewers because, although it challenges the
cultural belief that gays are not accepted by most in society, it still weakens

Taking a Look at Hurricanes
Hurricanes are first formed when warm ocean water makes energy for the hurricane and causes
evaporation making air and clouds. The ocean water temperature has to achieve at least 80
degrees fahrenheit for it to provide energy for the hurricane. The winds will then end up colliding
and force the winds upwards. After the winds have flown upward, they will flow outward above
the storm which will make the air rise. Lastly, the light winds outside the storm will let it grow into
a national storm.
There are many tropical stages a storm has to go through before reaching the final hurricane
stage. The first stage is called a tropical wave. A tropical wave storm is basically a low pressured
storm following the trade winds. The second stage is called a Tropical Disturbance. A tropical
disturbance is an area of thunderstorms that will usually form in the tropics area. These storms
only last for about a day at the most and usually produce heavy rain and gusty winds. The third
stage is called a Tropical Cyclone. A tropical cyclone is similar to a tropical wave. It produces a
low pressure storm but they develop usually over tropical and sub tropical waters. The fourth
stage is called a Tropical Depression. A tropical depression is a medium pressure storm with
winds approximately 38 mph or less. These storms are one of the first stages when meteorologists
are studying a certain storm forming. The fifth stage is called a Tropical Storm. These storms are
very common because they are the

International Crime And Jurisdiction In The United States
Jurisdiction is the most prominent issue for enforcement officers to deal with international crimes
stemming from the deep web. There are illegal markets for gambling, weapons, explosives,
assassinations, exotic animals, terrorism and hacktivism all of which can be accessed by anyone in
the world if they knew the right ways to get in. The darknet has an international customer base, and
cases can get even more complicated when criminals from different countries start to work together.
Questions of which country s law should be followed and what punishment should be given arise,
and not all parties involved end up satisfied. While it is impossible to please everyone with a trial
and punishment, having an international court disfuses any issue concerning jurisdiction in order
to deal with the criminal.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One could argue that the International Criminal Court already exists, and there is no need for
another one. However, the International Criminal Court follows The Rome Statute for jurisdiction
which only allows action to be taken for crimes of genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes,
and crimes of aggression. Though there are some crimes committed through the darknet that can
fall under this, such as terrorism, the majority of them do not. This does not mean these crimes are

Microcapsules Essay
Layer by Layer Approach for Making Microcapsules
Muhammad Faiz Omar (201308264)
4th December 2014
Abstract
The fabrication of hollow multilayer microcapsules in the beginning is initiated by layer by layer
(LbL) self assembly technique of oppositely charged polyelectrolyte on colloidal template followed
by core decomposition. The main concept of microencapsulation is to protect the contents of
fabricated microcapsules from the harmful environment in which it is surrounded. In this literature
review, I shall outline the technique of microcapsules encapsulation employing LbL approach, lists
of polyelectrolytes and templates and application of microcapsules.
Introduction
Over the past decades, nanometre sized or known as microcapsules have been benefited the
approach of Layer by Layer(LbL) technique due to the ability of tailoring their properties(e.g., size ,
shape, colloidal stability, surface functionality, composition) that are biocompatible and
biodegradable.1 3,10They are broadly used in many applications including food technologies,
cosmetics, textiles industry and pharmaceuticals. The LBL assembly of multilayers are
fundamentally built up by the alternating deposition of oppositely charged polyelectrolytes onto a
sacrificial template such that the charge oscillates between positive and negative with each
layer.1,4 The establishment of nanocoatings using LbL assembly method distinguishes itself in its
intelligibility compared to the more conventional method. The

Independence In The Bloody Chamber
As a child, parents are the people who are there to protect and guide us through our path to
independence. However, the lessons are experiences we have to go through in order to fully
understand them. The Bloody Chamber, by Angela Carter, is tales about the main protagonists
going on adventures to find their independence and a sense of self and identity. Many of the young
girls in these fairytales grow up being guided and protected by a parent, but eventually, as innocent
girls grow into young woman, they go on their own paths. In the beginning of the stories, they are
all innocent and naive, but by the end, they come out to be independent individuals. Even though

sexuality and humanity not for the sake of another s love, but on her own. Menstruation can be
described as the first sign of womanhood because that was the first time she started to realize how
different she was; although, Wolf Alice didn t know what was happening because she has no

Intimate Partner Abuse
Domestic abuse also referred to intimate partner abuse which occurs between people in an
intimate relationship. According to recent global prevalence figure indicates that about 1 in 3

Hollywood Rape
This culture isn t just present behind the scenes in Hollywood. More and more people are coming
out with their #MeToo stories, after the events with Harvey Weinstein. Many women and men
began sharing about how they were assaulted or harassed sexually. Some people do not feel
comfortable telling these traumatic events to the World Wide Web. In 2013, there were 309
reported forcible rapes in Broward County. But, it is unknown how many total there were. So many
victims do not report their attacker. Many victims of rape, sexual assault, and sexaul harrasment are
attacked before the age of 18, according to Broward Human Resources website. That mean they are
students in high school and middle school. Preparation for these cases can be teachers, coaches,

When stories of rape, assault, or harassment come into the light, a lot of blame is placed on the
victim. People often say that she was probably dressed provocatively. Some victims respond to this
by posting pictures of what they were wearing. Most of the time, they outfit is not inappropriate,
especially if they are middle school or high school students. Another excuse is that boys will be
boys.
To me, rape culture means that society accepts the fact that sexual harassment, like catcalling and
other kinds of stuff, is just a part of it, said sophomore Naomi Rosenberg. Boys can still be
sexually assaulted, but usually they are the ones not being accountable for what they do to girls.
People just say boys will be boys and are done with it.
Putting all the blame on the victim could be considered unfair. For the most part the offender
continues living, with barely any charges be pressed against them. Victims are being held
accountable for actions done to them. They did not give the other person consent, their personal
space was penetrated, and they were attacked. Victims have to live with that everyday of their life.
Yet, society still puts everything on

  • 2. Research Assignment On High Fructose Corn Syrup Elissa Fernandez First Year Seminar Eating in America K. Shannon Research Assignment: High Fructose Corn Syrup BEWARE: HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP As Americans we are certainly used to opening our kitchen cabinets and having it be filled with endless food choices. To say the least, we are certainly blessed as a country to be able to have a wide variety. Although the choices are endless, unlike other countries, we are unsure of the additives that are being put into our foods. One specific food additive that is constantly seen in our labels is High Fructose Corn Syrup. High Fructose Corn Syrup can be defined as a cheap sweetener that is made from corn starch in which it is processed by glucose isomerase. This specific additive is currently apart of the top eleven most controversial food additives. High Fructose Corn Syrup, is being blamed for the obesity epidemic in the United States of America. I am here to prove through research and personal findings, that this is an additive that we most avoid. But when it comes to sodas and desserts sweetened with high fructose corn syrup, she believes in abstinence, not moderation (King). High fructose Corn Syrup has become a growing issue in the United States of America. This is seen through many statistics, one being the fact that we are the number one country for this usage. The best way High Fructose Corn Syrup can be described was in the article written by Patricia King entitled, Blaming it on corn syrup; Its increased use ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Ground Water Contamination and Household Response in... There are two sources of drinking water, surface water and ground water and they are each managed, monitored and regulated differently even though the actual water systems are interrelated and integrated. The state of Missouri has historically had plenty of high quality fresh water sources; in the northern half of the state most of the drinking watercomes from surface water while the majority of the southern population gets water from underground aquifers (Missouri Department of Natural Resources, 2010). The Missouri River and its alluvium wells provide more than half of the state s residents with drinking water as most of the urban centers in the state are located along its course. Water from wells located adjacent to the Missouri River... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The contamination was ultimately found to be Escherichia coli 0157:H7 commonly referred to as E. coli or EC0157. Investigations by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Missouri state and county public health departments determined the most probable source of contamination was leakage of sewage near broken water main lines that then entered the drinking water distribution system (Swerdlow et al, 1992). According to the report by Swerdlow et al (1992), this particular incident had the distinction of being not only the largest incidence of EC0157 infection at that time but also the first due to a multiple resistant organism, and the first documented to be transmitted by water (Swerdlow et al, 1992, p. 818). Testing of water taken directly from the wells in Cabool revealed the water contamination did not occur in the ground water itself but was initiated in and then distributed via the water supply system. The Cabool contamination could have been prevented had the town followed the recommended standard procedure of hyperchlorination immediately after water line breaks or repairs (Swerdlow et el, 1992). It is common for water systems to have small leaks but they usually do not result in contamination as the positive flow of water pressure prevents inward infiltration of the system but when there are breaks in the lines and pressure is lost, contamination can flow back into the water lines. ... • 4. Technological Change Moves Faster Than Bureaucracy Technological change moves much faster than bureaucracy, and it is the patent office that must bear the collision of novelty and government for anyone who wishes to profit from their genius must go there to have their constitutional right to the proceeds from it verified. Exactly what technology can be patented in this day and age, as our bodies and proteins become subject to technology themselves, is indeed in need of some clarification. Today scientific advances allow us to look into the deepest codes that create our bodies our genes. With a small sample scientists can isolate the miniscule structure of just a single gene and analyze it for every divergence it displays in an individual as compared to the normal human population.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Smith Pharmaceuticals is one of these corporations. Over several years, they spent hundreds of millions of dollars on research perfecting the method to synthesize and analyze cDNA complementary DNA in the genes LIF and LCK. Mutations in these two genes, as Smith discovered, correlated with and were highly indicative of an increased risk of leukemia. Smith filed a patent on these genes and the process of the diagnostic test, and has since benefited over one million potential leukemia patients with a diagnostic that allows them to take preemptive strikes against the disease the average cost of leukemia in the Netherlands is $104,386 (de Uyl et al.), and one treatment in the United States costs $178,000 (Chen), while Smith s test is under $4000, and usually insurance eligible under new Federal law, qualifying as preventative care. As the Economist puts it succinctly, the point of a patent is to encourage innovation by giving inventors a limited period of exclusive control over the fruits of their labour, (April 2013). Smith invested these large sums into identifying this gene under the assumption that it would make profit off of these tests due to its rights over the information it gathers and, important to note, it would not have done so without this financial motivation. Otherwise, it is highly plausible that LIF and LCK s benefits would lie undiscovered even today, and the one million patients tested at under $4000 would all be undergoing $178000 ... • 5. The Epidemic Of The Ebola Virus Science has offered mankind various alternative methods to stop diseases from invading the human body. Whether, it be a vaccine, a pill, or various collaborative methods, mankind is in the pursuit of controlling and isolating the Ebola virus disease. Ebola is a disease that not only consumes the lives of many, but also consumes the infrastructure of many villages, towns, and their way of life. The Ebolavirus is one of the most dangerous diseases because it suppresses the immune system, damages the vascular system, leads to multiple organ failure, and hemorrhagic fever along with a chain of various other symptoms. It is not one single phase of Ebola that has up to a 90 percent mortality rate 1, but a wave of multiple body systems failures that disintegrates the human body as a whole. The virus ability to attack the human body has driven man to expand on various new methods to counteract the destruction it has had on the Central and Western African. Understanding the Ebola virus disease, its strains, and its ability to suppress the immune system, has driven the collaboration of health organizations to design and implement projects that will control and reduce the spread of Ebola. The Ebola virus belongs to a family of negative strand RNA viruses called Filoviridae, which are classified as Zoonotic diseases 2. Zoonotic diseases are caused by animals that contain the virus within them. There are a total of four Ebola species grouped as Filoviridae that can cause the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Analysis Of Jimmy Santiago Baca Poetry As Lifesaver In the profile article Jimmy Santiago Baca: Poetry as Lifesaver author Rob Baker, who also is a creative writing and English teacher proves to not only the readers but also the National Council of Teachers of English the significance of poetry. The authors main point is that poetry saved Jimmy Santiago Baca s life, he shows us how by explaining the emotions when Baca began to read poetry; he then went on to write poetry and even publish his own works while still in prison, after Baca s release, he became a dedicated teacher who also works with gangmembers and teaches workshops. The author starts by explaining Baca s background he tells the audience the difficult circumstances that were Baca s life. All circumstances considered into his young adulthood Baca could hardly read nor write and truly had no desire to learn; Which makes it even more spectacular that he found poetry. His interest began at twenty one when Baca was in prison, sentenced to possibly five to ten years. A couple years passed and a church program had extended a relationship via a letter they sent, they targeted prisoners without families. Unbeknownst Baca learned through steady communication with the church how to read and write. The writinggave him something to do and in a sense a purpose. Shortly into their connection, the man from the church introduced to a friend who was a poet. After this moment Baca s life would never be the same. I believe something in my brain or ... The Reality Of Women s Soccer Isabel Cesarotti Dr. Barron ENC 1101 12 September 2016 The Reality of Women s Soccer One of the clearest memories I have is of the day when my mom sat me down, looked me in the eye and said to me that as a women in this world, I was going to have to work ten times harder as any man to command respect. She told me that as a woman in this world, there are certain inevitabilities I have to accept. The main one is that life is unfair. She said that accomplishments are inevitably going to be handed to men that you feel you worked hard for and deserved. This, she said, was going to sometimes make me feel outraged or bitter, and oftentimes make me feel worthless. She said, however, the most important thing that I must do is simply put away my pride, roll my shoulders, stiffen my lip and work harder than anyone. In that way, I can succeed. But what if after succeeding, after working harder, longer and more intensely than everyone else, you achieve the most you can in your career and realize that your hard work is meaningless? Meaningless because you simply do not get the same respect as your male counterparts. Many professional woman soccer players are currently experience this heart wrenching feeling. This is because it is painfully clear: women soccer players are not getting the same level of respect as their male counterparts. The first World Cup was held in July of 1930 and it exclusively hosted men. Since then, women footballers have been championing for women s ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

While many religions blossomed on the American shores of the Atlantic, a basic structure held for most of them, being predominantly derived from Puritanism. Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement, showed the link the new settlers had to God when Sir Thomas Dale said the following in 1610: Be not dismayed at all For scandall cannot doe us wrong, God will not let us fall. The Puritans (Johnson, p.1) also rejected the Catholic and Anglican Church s hierarchy and even their worship of symbols such as the cross, statues, and stained glass windows. By 1630, Puritanism ruled New England almost entirely. Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New Hampshire were some of the colonies that relied on Puritanism. As Samuel Eliot Morison states, New Englanders, however they differed in property and occupation, had a common belief in the Bible as the guide to life, and a uniform method of land division and settlement, (Morison, pg.167). Governments based on the ideals of the religion represented in the town were emerging all over the newly shaping country. The great majority of emigrants to New England were middle class farmers, tradesmen and artisans. Since Puritanism did not condemn manual labor as some religions did, and since every man no matter how poor could vote if he joined the church, independent yeoman farmers quickly became the backbone of the community. Roosevelt was the 26th president and fought in the Spanish American War, also known as the Cuban War. He was the most influential person who supported the completion of construction of the Panama Canal. One of the first and most important National Parks, Theodore RooseveltNational Park in western North Dakota, was named after him too. During his presidency, he inspired many. If it was not for Theodore Roosevelt, our society would not be as advanced as it is today. Theodore was born on October 27, 1858. Traditional forms of corrections consist of prisontime, restitution, probation or parole. However, there are some non traditional methods as well such as alternative sentencing. Prison, county jails and other alternatives ultimate goal is to reform offenders so they will not commit any more crimes and can be sent back into the real world. The intended goals are the same, but with the alternatives the offender just gets to reform his or herself outside of a prison cell. Data that supports incarceration or some other methods of punishment varies within jurisdictions. Joel Caplan s research said There has been some evidence that successful paroles are increasing in certain jurisdictions; or rather, that failure rates are declining in certain states (Austin, 2001). This could be because once an individual gets a look at prison life and their freedom and rights are stripped away that is enough to humble a person and make them want to change and be free again. Freedom from prison can uplift a person and individuals strive for the right to become members of society again (Caplan, 2006). Someone granted parole can fail to successfully blend back into his or her community. Sometimes when individuals are fresh out of prison it is harder for previously convicted criminals to get jobs or even be accepted by society again. • 18. Resolved that Fracking for Natural Gas from Shale... Definition of Terms According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Fracking, or Hydraulic Fracturing is a method used to extract underground resources including oil, natural gas, and geothermal energy by injecting high pressure fluid into a geologic formation containing oil or natural gas deposits. The high pressure fluid opens up existing fractures and creates new fracture systems that allow the resources that were once trapped to move more freely into a production well for further extraction. Shale gas is defined by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) as natural gas that is trapped within shale formations. Shale formations are geologic formations that contain hydrocarbon mixtures that naturally form an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The lack of credible and accessible information available inhibits our ability to fully understand the impact of hydraulic fracturing on freshwater resources in the U.S. The recent boom in shale gas production using hydraulic fracturing techniques has raised concern about the potential for groundwater contamination. Fissures created by high pressure fracking fluid to increase gas flow to the well also create pathways for leakage and consequent contamination of groundwater (Yu et al. 2014). Boreholes drilled for well access must pass through shallower strata, which may contain groundwater aquifers, before reaching target natural gas reservoirs (Davies et al. 2014). Passing through shallow layers of strata introduces a potential source of contamination to groundwater resources (Davies et al. 2014). Leakage into groundwater wells can occur due to poor well completion practices, the corrosion of steel casing, and the deterioration of cement during production of shale gas (Davies et al. 2014). Therefore, shale gas well integrity is important in reducing contamination events. Lack of integrity at shale gas well sites has resulted in several contamination events such as blowouts and gas venting due to fluid leaking. In Pennsylvania between 2008 and 2011, there were 85 ... Personally, I believe this subdivision is so interesting because it is so diverse and covers so much ground on how our language and others have evolved over time. Ranging from early cave writings, to sign language, to the language and slang we all know and use today, language among not only our cultures but also others have vastly changed and there is proof of this that dates back to ancient times. The mere complexity of our current language is beyond what past civilizations could have even imagined it would come to be. What I find to be very interesting is the fact that even today our upbringing, social class, or cultural norms, can define how we speak. For instance, there are certain slangs or terms that someone may say because they were brought up around people who spoke using that kind of language. While this is true for some, but not all, children of an upper class parents may grow up speaking very formally, and be taught to not use any slang or vulgar words. They continue using this vocabulary further on in life because it is what they were taught to do. This can also be applied to any other social class, or even differ between people from different geographic locations. Linguistics is often learned and adopted from generation to generation and from civilization to civilization. b.A person who studies anthropological linguistics ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Environmental Challenges Facing The American Auto Industry Written Assignment Unit 5 Environmental challenges facing the American auto industry The American auto industry has been in existence since 1896 when Henry Ford built his first car. He then invented the assembly line which allowed for the production of multiple cars, and this made the price of cars more affordable to buyers. By the 1920s, the assembly line concept of production was used by the largest auto companies in the United States, namely Ford, General Motors and Chrysler. The auto industry has always been faced with environmental and hazardous issues. Such issues include global competition, new technology for powering the product that this industry produces, and the effect of emissions on the environment. Global competition In 1995, a trade agreement was made between the United States and Japan. Because of this agreement, Japanese cars became more readily available in the USA, directly competing with American brands such as Ford, Chrysler, and General Motors. Additionally, Japanese dealer outlets established a recognizable presence in the USA, making replacement parts easily available. This helped to increase competition since it provided an incentive for Americans to purchase Japanese cars. Moreover, even in other markets, American car companies failed to maintain their previously strong position as countries such as India, China, and South Korea were also into the manufacturing of automobiles. To understand the reason why United Airlines (UAL) decided to implement SMS, we need to go back and analyzed its system before it implemented SMS and also after it was implemented. To do so, we will use critical thinking which is a disciplined process that consists of applying, and evaluating data. According to the 2014 Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) record, before SMS was instituted at UAL, the recordable injury rate, the lost time injury, and the aircraft damage rate were very high. But with SMS, everything started going down. For example, in 2014 the recordable injury rate was down by 4 percent as compared to the previous year, the lost time injury and its performing decreased by almost 24 percent. The air that comes through is warmed and filtered by the mucus. The mouth is the secondary external opening for the respiratory tract. The air that we breathe in through the nose or mouth, travels through the larynx, down the windpipe, and then into the lungs. The larynx contains muscle called vocal cords. When we try to speak, the cords come together, and vibrate as we breathe out. This is what gives us our voice. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This reaction to Judaism by Freddy suggests it is something to be ashamed of or uncomfortable with, although as the novel progresses it seems as though Freddy is more at ease with Jews. It has been suggested that the inclusion of seemingly straightforward characters such as Freddy Hamilton, who act against there typical stereotypes is a device to maintain a sense of disruption [7]. This disruption heightens the sense of conflict which radiates from Barbara Vaughan s tumultuous, confused identity. The second chapter of The Mandlebaum Gate is titled Barbara Vaughan s Identity . Obesity is one of the major risk factors for gallstones, especially in women. A large clinical study showed that being even moderately overweight increases one s risk for developing gallstones. Secondly, excess estrogen from pregnancy, hormone replacement therapy or birth control pills appears to increase cholesterol levels in bile and decrease gallbladder movement, both of which can lead to gallstones. Ethnicity is another important factor. According to scientists, Native Americans have a genetic predisposition to secrete high levels of cholesterol in bile. In fact, they have the highest rates of gallstones in the United States. A majority of Native American men have gallstones by age 60. Among the Pima Indians of Arizona, 70 percent of women have gallstones by age 30. Mexican Americans men and women of all ages also have high rates of gallstones. Jane has been locked in in a room with yellow wallpaper by her husband as treatment for her hysteria. Her hysteria is played by a nameless character beside her. In combination with symbolic blocking, the set and dГ©cor of this production create the perfect environment to capture the inner turmoil of Jane and her relationship with the madness. One expects when walking past the doors of a theatre to encounter a stage and perhaps someplace to sit. However, when walking through the theatre doors one is confronted by a fabric wall and a dark hallway created by hanging pieces of yellow curtains and blankets stitched together with visible seams and patterns overlapping haphazardly. The people you saw enter before you disappear and you re confronted by the question of where to go next. You walk along the dark makeshift hallway until you find an open wooden door, through which you finally see the stage and realize that you were only a few feet away from it the entire time. This makes up the audience s first interaction with the The Yellow Wallpaper. This design choice was a seamless way to draw audiences into the story and the mindset of the characters within the play. Will does not speak with a lisp, he does not use flashy hand gestures, nor does he even appear to be gay. Rather, he seems to be an average character on a sitcom. • 48. Taking a Look at Hurricanes Hurricanes are first formed when warm ocean water makes energy for the hurricane and causes evaporation making air and clouds. The ocean water temperature has to achieve at least 80 degrees fahrenheit for it to provide energy for the hurricane. The winds will then end up colliding and force the winds upwards. After the winds have flown upward, they will flow outward above the storm which will make the air rise. Lastly, the light winds outside the storm will let it grow into a national storm. There are many tropical stages a storm has to go through before reaching the final hurricane stage. The first stage is called a tropical wave. A tropical wave storm is basically a low pressured storm following the trade winds. The second stage is called a Tropical Disturbance. A tropical disturbance is an area of thunderstorms that will usually form in the tropics area. These storms only last for about a day at the most and usually produce heavy rain and gusty winds. The third stage is called a Tropical Cyclone. A tropical cyclone is similar to a tropical wave. It produces a low pressure storm but they develop usually over tropical and sub tropical waters. The fourth stage is called a Tropical Depression. A tropical depression is a medium pressure storm with winds approximately 38 mph or less. The main concept of microencapsulation is to protect the contents of fabricated microcapsules from the harmful environment in which it is surrounded. In this literature review, I shall outline the technique of microcapsules encapsulation employing LbL approach, lists of polyelectrolytes and templates and application of microcapsules. Introduction Over the past decades, nanometre sized or known as microcapsules have been benefited the approach of Layer by Layer(LbL) technique due to the ability of tailoring their properties(e.g., size , shape, colloidal stability, surface functionality, composition) that are biocompatible and biodegradable.1 3,10They are broadly used in many applications including food technologies, cosmetics, textiles industry and pharmaceuticals. The LBL assembly of multilayers are fundamentally built up by the alternating deposition of oppositely charged polyelectrolytes onto a sacrificial template such that the charge oscillates between positive and negative with each layer.1,4 The establishment of nanocoatings using LbL assembly method distinguishes itself in its intelligibility compared to the more conventional method.
