Christopher Simmons, who was seventeen years old, and two of his friends by the name of Charles
Benjamin(fifteen years old) and John Tessmer (sixteen years old) had a detailed conversation about

There are many themes evident in both Stephen Crane s The Blue Hotel and Bret Harte s
Tennessee s Partner; some of these themes are easily recognizable while recognition of the others
depends on the perception of the reader. The two stories share the theme of personal integrity and
that all actions have consequences; however, there are several themes that are unique to each story
that the readercan latch on to. The plotand storyline of Tennessee s Partner are straightforward, but
after reading Crane s The Blue Hotel, one can imagine many different plots that could have taken
place throughout the story. Through imagery, the reader can take what each author presents and let
his or her imagination run wild; there is not a set feeling or reaction that either author intends for
the reader to have after reading.

Easterner. Tennessee s partner is integral because he never left his friend behind, even after he
had done him wrong. He was always there for Tennessee and never betrayed him. The Easterner
shows his integrity when he tells the truth about Johnnie and feels guilty about the situation with
the Swede; most people would have shrugged it off so that they did not have to deal with it but
he chose to speak up. Both of these forms of integrity show the true moral values of each

Book I, Cephalus, Polemarchus, and Thrasymachus put forth flawed definitions of justicethat range

of righteousness and, in doing so, present a doctrine that leads to the benefit of those who adhere
to it and society at large. The central aim of said doctrine, education for the sake of knowing
goodness, is neglected by Socrates companions, yet is vital for ensuring a justice that is
desirable for both its consequences and its very essence. Cephalus, the first to offer a definition,
posits that justice is giving what is owed and conducting oneself with honesty. This appears to
be a commonplace yet strong image of justice, ingratiated within man s consciousness as the
ancient system of reward and retribution. Socrates, however, is quick in finding its limitations.
He puts forth the scenario of one who is in possession of a crazed man s weapon. Giving the man
his property would be a just action according to this definition; however, he may go on to harm
others with it (331c). Justice, they agree, could not result in this outcome. The only situation in
which this definition would be viable is one where every person has both full knowledge of the
good and is aware of all consequences that could arise from any action; circumstances such as
these are clearly impossible given human limitations. A parallel can be drawn between Socrates
refutation and elements of modern societies: for example, those who are deemed a threat to
themselves or others due to their mental state can be involuntarily committed to a controlled
environment for a set amount of time. This lends credence to Socrates idea of justice in that his
words, recorded over two thousand years ago, bear great relevance in societies far larger and more

So, I set out to find out what information there was about volcanoes, and if there was anyone out
there who wanted to discuss them with me.
To begin my search I went to my favorite search engine, Yahoo.com. I have always found that
this engine is the easiest to use, and gives you the best information. At first, I researched all
volcanoes, not just Mt. Rainier. There was so much information out there that I found it
difficult to narrow it down to just 10 for my annotated bibliography. I was able to spend hours on
the computer exploring the various sites and finding out new information. From most of the
sites I went to I was able to link to other sites that had to do with the same subject. I found this to
be very useful in doing my research. Not only did I find information about volcanoes and how
they work, I found places where I could buy volcano merchandise, watch real time videos of
eruptions, and look at volcano cams from around the world. I learned so much about all kinds of
volcanoes from my research, but when it came down to answering the questions that I had asked,
there were two web sites that I found were the most useful, The US Geological Societies Cascades
Volcano Observatory, and Volcanoes Online. These two I found to be the most useful in my
research.
Mount Rainier is located in Washington, and it basically dominates the landscape of a large part of
western Washington. The mountain is 4,329 meters, and it is what
