2. Hello & Welcome
Ever wondered what Thermography is
and what it can be used for?
In this short presentation we
demonstrate the science behind the
technique and the areas in which this
technology will be beneficial.

3. Discovery of infrared radiation
around 1800 by Friedrich
Wilhelm Herschel in England
Sir Friedrich Wilhelm Herschel
(* 15th November 1738 in
Hanover; † 25th August 1822 in
Slough) was a German-British
astronomer and musician.
Physicist Max Planck proved as far back as
1900, that there is a correlation between the
temperature of a “Body” and the Intensity of
the Infrared Radiation that it emits

4. Thermal, or infrared energy, is light that is not visible
because its wavelength is too long to be detected by the
human eye; it's the part of the electromagnetic spectrum.
Unlike visible light, in the infrared world, everything
with a temperature above absolute zero emits heat.
Even very cold objects, like ice cubes, emit infrared.
The higher the object's temperature, the greater the
IR radiation emitted. Infrared allows us to see what
our eyes cannot.

5. Thermal Imaging / Thermography is the
conversion of Infrared Radiation into Thermal
images.
A thermal image is an analogue pictorial
representation or visualisation of temperature
differences.
All objects above absolute zero (-273 degrees)
emit radiation, some of which is infra-red.
Depending on temperature and emissivity,
most objects in the world can be thermally
imaged.
Thermal imagers detect and record Infra-red
radiation emitted from the surface of any subject
being viewed. The imager does not have the ability
to see below the surface. However, the radiation
from the surface is often influenced by sub-surface
detail, which effects the thermal characteristics of
adjoining material(s).

7. What are the benefits?
• Non-contact process / Non Intrusive
• Can safely see /visualise, temperatures of components, moving objects, thermal
patterns, very hot objects (Up to 2000°C) and high voltage objects
• Thermal Imaging gives us an overall temperature profile of the subject rather than
the temperature at one point
• A thermal image gives a visual indication of temperature differences and when it is
a Radiometric Thermal Image, it will also give temperature measurement.

9. Thermal Imaging provides a visualisation of temperature differentials which
can help to identify anomalies / faults. Thermal Imaging allows you to see
more.
