INTRODUCTION
Definition
Infrared thermography is a technique that allows temperatures to be mea-
sured remotely and without the need for physical contact with the object to
be studied, by capturing the intensity of infrared radiation emitted by the
bodies.
It is a tool used in preventive maintenance

THEORY AND PRINCIPLES
Thermal Energy
It is the internal energy of a system that depends on its absolute tempera-
ture.
Carlos, Gabriel, Alan, Leonardo (ITSOEH) THERMAL INFRARED TESTING may, 2024 7 / 24
THEORY AND PRINCIPLES
Latent Heat
Latent heat is the energy required by a substance to change its state without
changing its temperature.
Carlos, Gabriel, Alan, Leonardo (ITSOEH) THERMAL INFRARED TESTING may, 2024 8 / 24
THEORY AND PRINCIPLES
Conduction
It is a form of heat transmission through body contact without transfer of
matter.
Figura: It is more present in metals.
Carlos, Gabriel, Alan, Leonardo (ITSOEH) THERMAL INFRARED TESTING may, 2024 9 / 24
THEORY AND PRINCIPLES
Convection
It consists of the transmission of heat from the transfer of the heat-carrying
matter itself.
Figura: Example in the currents of covention.
Carlos, Gabriel, Alan, Leonardo (ITSOEH) THERMAL INFRARED TESTING may, 2024 10 / 24
THEORY AND PRINCIPLES
Radiation
Transmission of energy through the emission of electromagnetic waves or
photons
Figura: The sun emits radiation through waves.

EQUIPMENT AND ACCESSORIES
Lens
Lenses serve to focus the incoming infrared radiation on the detector. Some
infrared lens materials are actually opaque to visible light.
Materials commonly used for lenses are germanium (Ge), silicon (Si),
and zinc selenide (ZnSe).
Carlos, Gabriel, Alan, Leonardo (ITSOEH) THERMAL INFRARED TESTING may, 2024 13 / 24
EQUIPMENT AND ACCESSORIES
Detector
The radiation is focused on the detector, where it produces a measurable
response.
Materials commonly used for detectors are platinum silicide (PtSi),
mercury cadmium telluride (HgCdTe), and indium antimonide (InSb).
Carlos, Gabriel, Alan, Leonardo (ITSOEH) THERMAL INFRARED TESTING may, 2024 14 / 24
EQUIPMENT AND ACCESSORIES
Processing Electronics
The response from the detector is processed electronically to produce a
thermal image, a temperature measurement, or both.
Carlos, Gabriel, Alan, Leonardo (ITSOEH) THERMAL INFRARED TESTING may, 2024 15 / 24
EQUIPMENT AND ACCESSORIES
Controls
Various controls on the system allow for adjustments to control the input of
infrared radiation or the output of data. These typically include adjustments
to range and span, thermal level, polarity, emissivity, and other temperature
measurement functions.
Carlos, Gabriel, Alan, Leonardo (ITSOEH) THERMAL INFRARED TESTING may, 2024 16 / 24
EQUIPMENT AND ACCESSORIES
Display
The processed data is output to a display, either an electronic viewfinder
or a liquid crystal display (LCD) screen. Most instruments can display the
thermal image in either grayscale or a color scale.

EQUIPMENT AND ACCESSORIES
Data Storage
Data is typically stored either as a still digital image or as an analog video
image. Digital images are stored on floppy discs or PC cards. Digital voice
data can also be stored with an image on some systems as well.

Comparative Thermography
The basic strategy used in many thermal applications is quite simply termed
“comparative thermography.” It is no more complex than comparing similar
samples or components under similar conditions.

TECHNIQUES
Thermal Maps
These thermal mapping techniques can reveal a very accurate and useful
temperature trend of past performance, it is important to remember that
trending only implies, rather than predicts, the future.
It has also been used extensively in the electronics industry to look at printed
circuit boards (PCBs).
