Machinery Vibration Analysis and Maintenance Living Online
This practical workshop provides a detailed examination of the detection, location and diagnosis of faults in rotating and reciprocating machinery using vibration analysis. The basics and underlying physics of vibration signals are first examined. The acquisition and processing of signals is reviewed followed by a discussion of machinery fault diagnosis using vibration analysis, and rectifying the unidentified faults. The workshop is concluded by a review of the other techniques of predictive maintenance such as oil and particle analysis, ultrasound and infrared thermography. The latest approaches and equipment used together with current research techniques in vibration analysis are also highlighted in the workshop.

Commonly used maintenance strategies vary from simple ones such as Corrective Maintenance (CM), which is performed upon system failure, to Preventive Maintenance (PM) where maintenance actions are taken at scheduled time intervals. Both strategies, however, have limitations. Recent advances in sensors, control systems, software engineering, and communication technology have prompted manufacturers to move towards the condition monitoring of system health. Maintenance is performed based on the observed system condition, which is referred to as Condition-Based Maintenance (CBM). This presentation gives a comprehensive introduction to CBM, and introduces a method for CBM scheduling for systems with multiple failure modes. It is observed in some applications that the hazard rate corresponding to each failure mode depends on both time and system state. The system state stochastically degrades, and the degradation rate is often a function of time and the degradation level at that particular time. A maintenance alarm is used to signal when the degradation reaches a threshold value. A new joint model is developed for the stochastically dependent time-to-maintenance due to system degradation and time-to-failure of different failure modes. The model is then utilized to obtain the optimum threshold value that maximizes the system’s availability over its life cycle, or, minimizes the long-run cost per unit time. A illustrative example, using real-life data from a reliability test of communication systems, is provided to demonstrate the application of the approach.

Assessment of Gearbox Fault DetectionUsing Vibration Signal Analysis and Acou...IOSR Journals
Maintenance is a set of organised activities that are carried out in order to keep an item in its best
operational condition with minimum cost acquired. Predictive maintenance (PdM) is one of the maintenance
program that recommends maintenance decisions based on the information collected through condition
monitoring techniques, statistical process control or equipment performance for the purpose of early detection
and elimination of equipment defects that could lead to unplanned downtime of machinery or unnecessary
expenditures. Particularly Gears and rolling element bearings are critical elements in rotating machinery, so
predictive maintenance is often applied to them. Fault signals of gearboxes or rolling-element bearings are nonstationary.
This paper concludes with a brief discussion on current practices of PDM methodologies such as
vibration analysis and Acoustic Emission analysis, which are widely used as they offers a complimentary tool
for health monitoring or assessment of gears in rotating machineries
Performance Monitoring of Vibration in Belt Conveyor SystemIJERA Editor
We are always using some kind of machines in our daily life starting from fan, refrigerator and washing machines at home. In case of industries of industrial machinery items condition monitoring is important to know onset impending defects. There are so many types of indicating phenomenon such as vibration, heat, debris in oil, noise and sounds which emanate from these in efficiently running machines. This paper presents the vibration related fault identification and maintenance of belt conveyor systems (BCS). After analyzing the spectrum and vibration readings, it was observed that a combination of parallel and angular misalignment between motor & gear box was present causing high axial and radial vibration. The defect was rectified by mechanical maintenance activities and latter the vibration was found reduced within limit. Also the vibration readings were taken after rectification. The above results are presented in this paper.

Condition monitoring is the process of monitoring a
parameter of condition in machinery, such that a
significant change is indicative of a developing failure. It
is a major component of Predictive Maintenance
(PdM). The use of conditional monitoring allows
maintenance to be scheduled, or other actions to be
taken to avoid the consequences of failure, before the
failure occurs.

14. What Is Vibration ? www.sajetc.com
Vibration is a "back and forth" movement of a structure. It can also be
referred to as a "cyclical" movement
15. Vibration Analysis
More than 20 years ago someone made the statement, “The
vibrations produced in a machine are the best indication of the
machine’s health.” This statement still holds true today. Of all the
predictive maintenance (PdM) technologies, vibration analysis
remains the best measure of machine health. This is true because
vibration monitoring can alert us to so many different conditions
that may indicate potential machine failures. Unbalance,
misalignment, bearing faults, resonance, looseness, cavitations and
electrical problems are just a few of the many problems that can be
detected with vibration monitoring.

What we Measure for
Vibration Analysis
Amplitude: How Much Movement
Occurs or severity of the vibration.
Amplitude measures as
1. Displacement: mm, mils (0.001”)
2. Velocity: mm/sec, in/sec
3. Acceleration: G’s (1g= Force of
gravity) or rms (root mean square)
Frequency: How Often The
Movement Occurs. How many
"cycles" in a period of time: a
second or a minute
Unit: Cycle per second (Hz)
Cycle per Minute (CPM)
Phase: In What Direction Is
The Movement. It also called
phase angle.
Unit: Degree

Oil analysis is a quick, nondestructive way to gauge the health
of an engine by looking at what's in the oil. It is as like as
