2. INTRODUCTION
• Infrared Thermography is a proactive
troubleshooting and predictive maintenance tool.
• An infrared camera can be used to make the world
that is invisible to the human eye come to life.

4. Working
 * All materials, which are above 0 degrees Kelvin (-273 degrees
C), emit infrared energy.
 * Thermal, or infrared energy, is light that is not visible because
its wavelength is too long to be detected by the human eye;

• The infrared energy emitted from the measured object is
converted into an electrical signal by the imaging sensor
(microbolometer) in the camera and displayed on a monitor as a
colour or monochrome thermal image.

•The spectrum and amount of thermal radiation depend strongly on an
object's surface temperature. This makes it possible for a thermal
imaging camera to display an object's temperature.

 In other words,
 The higher the temperature, the greater the intensity of
infrared energy that is emitted. As well as emitting
infrared energy, materials also reflect infrared, absorb
infrared and,in some cases, transmit infrared.
• As long as there is a heat or cold difference between an
object under investigation and other objects in the
environment, ATI will get the image.

In Electronic field it is usually used to detect loose
connections and failure cases

•In medical field it has wide applications ..mainly to
detect cancer affected cells in human body .
•In recent days to detect diseases like swine flue

11. Fire applications
•In fire accidents ….the fire men will find difficult to
locate the persons who has struck in the accidents
using this they find it easy .Because the temperature of
body differs from radiation of surroundings

 Here it is mainly used to determine building flaws.
And any unknown damaged areas during
construction

13. Advantages
• It is capable of catching moving targets in real time
• It is able to find deteriorating, i.e., higher temperature
components prior to their failure
• It can be used to find defects in shafts, pipes, and other
metal or plastic parts
• It can be used to detect objects in dark areas

14. Disadvantages
• Quality cameras often have a high price range (often US$6,000
or more)
• Images can be difficult to interpret accurately when based upon
certain objects, specifically objects with erratic temperatures,
although this problem is reduced in active thermal imaging
• Most cameras have 2% accuracy or worse in measurement of
temperature and are not as accurate as contact methods
• Only able to directly detect surface temperatures
