DEFINITION
•A form ofmedicine contained in a small piece of solid
material, such as glycerin, that melts at body
temperature.
• A suppository is inserted into the rectum and the
medicine is absorbed into the bloodstream.
PROCEDURE
1. Preparation ofPatient Explains the procedure to the patient and seek
consent

5. Checks the physician order for patient name and drug.
6. Explain procedure and review patient information related to
medication including action, side effects and review medical record for
history of rectal surgery or bleeding.
7. Spreads mackintosh under the hip
8. Positions the patient in left lateral position with the
right leg flexed
9. Drapes the patient exposing only the anal area

11. Makes anopening at the conical end of the
suppository using scissors
12. Presses the other end with the left hand and have
the suppository in the right index finger
13. Separates the buttocks using a rag piece, exposing
the anal opening
14. Instructs the patient to breathe deeply and relax
15. Check within 5 mins to determine that suppository
is in place.
16. Inserts the suppository 4 inches(10 cm) through the
anus past the internal sphincter and against the rectal
wall using the index finger.

17. Instructs thepatient to hold the suppository until
the urge to pass stools is strong and to remain in the
same position for 10 to 15 minutes or till defecation
(whichever is earlier /as per requirement).
18. Ask if patient experienced localized and /or rectal
discomfort during insertion.
19. Positions the patient comfortably
20. Replaces the articles
21. Washes hands
22. Documents the procedure (name of the drug,route,
time of administration and effect)
