These slides use concepts from my (Jeff Funk) course entitled analyzing hi-tech opportunities to show how the cost and performance of additive manufacturing/3D printing is experiencing rapid improvements and thus it is becoming economically feasible for many new applications. All 3D printers have benefited from improvement sin microprocessors and sensors, which have enabled better process control. One new and one existing technique and the impact of improvements in electronic components on the performance and cost of additive manufacturing are discussed. First, continuous liquid interface production is a new technique that utilizes a unique design of digital light processing, a deadzone, and an oxygen permeable window. Improvements in the resolution of DLP, a form of MEMS, are occurring as smaller feature sizes are achieved, in the same way that increases in the number of transistors are achieved as transistor gate lengths are reduced. Second, an existing approach, Selective laser sintering, experiences improvements as higher powered lasers emerge. This technique melts metal powder and wires with an Ytterbium fiber laser whose power capabilities continue to be improved. This technique has already enabled GE to reduce the number of parts for an engine nozzle from 18 to 1, the weight by 25%, and the costs by a similar amount. The number of applications for SLA is expected to grow as the technique is improved through the use of higher powered lasers.

Additive manufacturing, commonly referred to as 3d printing, is a manufacturing
technique that rises in the 1980’s mainly focused on engineering prototyping. Current
advances in the precision and cost of the techniques, as well as the widespread use of 3d
designing have increased 3d printing’s scope of use from high-end engineering prototypes
to a large variety of uses in manufacturing. 3d printing improve the processing time,
decrease waste, and increase the level of customization of certain products by eliminating
the need for the specialty tooling and dies that are traditionally used in manufacturing. In
addition, the ability to physically print difficult shapes based on a computer model has
given rise to new products that would otherwise be simply impossible to create. The
various fields have taken advantage of this technology by printing 3d objects.
CREATING 3D MODELS WITH 3D PRINTING PROCESS ijcsit
This scientific paper will cover the process of creating two 3D objects, accompanied by a brief history of
3D printing technology, designing the model in CAD software, saving in appropriate format supported by
the 3D printer, features of technology and the printer, materials from which the object can be made and
examples where the products created by the 3D printing process can be applied. The printing of models
was made by the studio "Xtrude Design & 3D Print" in Skopje. Two 3D models have been printed. A
creative model of intertwined 4 triangles in STL file format has been made, which will be transferred and
printed with PLA material. The model with the heart on the stand is printed with popular FDM process
also with PLA material which is biodegradable and environmentally friendly. Both models are printed on
Anet A8 3D printer. Different printing times, layer thicknesses and cost price of producion we have in our
research.

3D printing is the process by which
layers of materials are successively
deposited into a powder bed with inkjet
printer head. The process of developing
3D material has a broad range of uses
across different fields.
3. It is applied in metal casting, geospatial, health
care, prototyping/CAD, designs visualization
and in the entertainment industry. The addictive
manufacturing process is predicted to be one of
the new inventions that have a high potential
for changing objects from how they are known
today. In facts its advocates predict that how
business is done is likely to be changed by this
technological advancement. The reason behind
this, they say is because the consumers will do
much of the manufacturing themselves instead
of buying from other people.

5. How does the 3d printing works
The addictive manufacturing process
starts with the making of a virtual design
usually in a Computer Aided Design file
also referred to as CAD of the solid
object that need to be created. CAD file
can be made by use of 3D scanner or a
3D modeling program.
6. A 3D modeling program is used when the
object to be created is totally new while a 3D
Scanner is used when there is a need of
producing a copy of an original object. After
the virtual design of an object has been made,
the 3D modeling program slices the final
objects into numerous layers. The next step is
uploading the model formed by a 3D printer
which now creates the new objects by bringing
the various layers of materials together such
that there is no sign of the layer is visible. This
process results in a three-dimensional objects.

8. What are the methods used in 3D
printing
Additive manufacturing makes use of
numerous methods and technologies when
creating a three-dimensional objects. The
difference in the several methods is in on how
each method builds the successive layers when
creating the object. Some of the most common
methods are SLS, which stands for Selective
laser sintering and the FDM which stands for
fused deposition modeling. Stereolithography
(SLA) is the 3D printing process where the
liquid material laid is cured by the use of
different technologies.
9. SLS method makes use of a high power laser to
bring together tiny particles of metals, glass
powders, plastic or ceramic into a model that
has a three-dimensional shapes of the desired
object. The high power laser selectively brings
together the different materials that are in
powder form by scanning each layer that is
generated by the 3D modeling program onto
the powder bed surface. The scanning reduces
the powder bed’s layer by one layer thickness.
The process of adding a new layer on the
powder bed and reducing the powder bed by
one layer continues until the desired object is
created.
