Being able to decide and express that you agree or disagree on something are quite important regardless if youâre establishing a stand in a debate, writing an essay or more importantly, dealing on your own thoughts about a person or an issue in your life. In the skill of writing and speaking, the words and expressions of affirming and negating will help you come up with a clear point in delivering your ideas. In doing so, Modals play a big part as to how your thoughts can be definite.
In English grammar, looking closely at the items inside the table earlier, the terms should and must are used. These are some of the modals that we commonly use whether in writing or speaking.
The part that says ââshould wearââ shows a positive idea or something that we can practically consider. In this sense, the idea of affirming comes.

Let us remember that modals in the positive form express affirmation. Examples are can, should, may, and will. Adding not to modals will render them expressions that negate. Examples are cannot, should not, may not and will not.
Since a discourse is naturally filled with different sources of ideas, it is but normal to encounter conflicts or opposing insights sometimes. Under this situation, constructing your thoughts if you will agree or disagree is essentially important. Knowing the appropriate words or expressions that will signal your stand will lead you to the usage of different adverbs.
Today, we will learn about adverbs that will enlighten you regarding the affirmation and negation in a discourse or argument.
The adverb obviously indicates that Zach knows very well that the pandemic problem caused a lot of saddening events. And even the word really also shows a strong emphasis on what Rasmus said.
When Rasmus used the term nothing, it served as a strong emphasis for bayanihan as a best trait. In this sense, the term nothing negates the thought that bayanihan can be matched. Therefore, though the essence of the statement is positive, the way it has been constructed is negative. Other adverbs here are really, undoubtedly and actually which implied affirming because the word expresses positive response to Rasmus.
The adverb contrastingly tells us that the speaker is in the opposite side of the discussion.

âOn the contraryâ stands as negating conjunction that shows disagreement on the first idea. It explains that free will makes Frollo to become a horrible or terrible person and not as the fate itself. What about this next example?
âButâ shows contradiction or disagreement on the first idea which is supporting importing goods. Meaning, it is still better to prioritize the local products as the ideas implied

But how are we going to give statements or to defend our side, if we donât like or we disagree with the given message?
In this sentence, we used âSomeoneâ as the affirmative word that agrees on the idea. Meaning there is someone who offers water to Quasimodo.
