What is a Black Hole?
(An excerpt from the PRIMALS Compendium)
LAC SESSION: FACT OR BLUFF
A black hole is a place in space where gravity
pulls so much that even light cannot get out. The
gravity is so strong because matter has been
squeezed into a tiny space. This can happen when
a star is dying.
Because no light can get out, people can't see
black holes. They are invisible. Space telescopes
with special tools can help find black holes. The
special tools can see how stars that are very close
to black holes act differently than other stars.

LAC SESSION: FACT OR BLUFF
The SQ3R method is a proven,
step-by-step strategic approach to
learning and studying from textbooks.
Why is it successful? Because it helps
you to discover the important facts and
ideas that are contained in your text.
SCHOOLS DIVISION OF ILOCOS NORTE
POINTS TO PONDER
LAC SESSION: FACT OR BLUFF
The SQ3R Method is a way to study,
understand and remember written
information more quickly. The reading
method was first mentioned in 1946, in the
book Effective Study by education
psychologist Francis P. Robinson, that has
been reprinted many times since then.
SCHOOLS DIVISION OF ILOCOS NORTE
Research says… SURVEY
LAC SESSION: FACT OR BLUFF
The first step, survey or skim, advises that one
should resist the temptation to read the book and
instead first go through a chapter and note the
headings, sub-headings and other outstanding
features, such as figures, tables, and summary
paragraphs. This survey step only takes 3–5 minutes,
but it provides an outline or framework for what will be
presented.
SCHOOLS DIVISION OF ILOCOS NORTE
Research says… QUESTION
LAC SESSION: FACT OR BLUFF
Generate questions about the content of
the reading. For example, convert headings
and sub-headings into questions, and then
look for answers in the content of the text.
Other more general questions may also be
formulated.
SCHOOLS DIVISION OF ILOCOS NORTE
Research says… READ
LAC SESSION: FACT OR BLUFF
Use the background work done with "S"
and "Q" in order to begin reading actively.
This means reading in order to answer the
questions raised under "Q". Passive reading,
in contrast, results in merely reading without
engaging with the study material.
SCHOOLS DIVISION OF ILOCOS NORTE
Research says… RECITE
LAC SESSION: FACT OR BLUFF
It is important that the reader use his/her own
words in order to formulate and conceptualize the
material. Try recalling and identifying major points
(heading/subheadings) and answers to questions
from the "Q" step. This recital step may be done
either in an oral or written format in boosting long-
term memory for the material.
SCHOOLS DIVISION OF ILOCOS NORTE
Research says… REVIEW
LAC SESSION: FACT OR BLUFF
The final "R" is "Review." Once you reach
the end of the passage, say back to yourself
what the point of the whole passage is –
again, using your own words. You may then
repeat the process on the second set of
questions.

JOSE RIZAL: The Ultimate Filipino Leader
by: An excerpt from the Editors of Britannica
José Rizal, in full José Protasio Rizal Mercado y Alonso
Realonda, (born June 19, 1861, Calamba, Philippines—died
December 30, 1896, Manila), patriot, physician, and man of
letters who was an inspiration to the Philippine nationalist
movement.
The son of a prosperous lawyer, Rizal was educated in
Manila and at the University of Madrid. A brilliant medical student,
he soon committed himself to the reform of Spanish rule in his
home country, though he never advocated Philippine
independence.

According to the biographies written for our National hero,
most of his writing was done in Europe, where he resided
between 1882 and 1892. In 1887 Rizal published his first novel,
Noli me tangere (The Social Cancer), a passionate exposure of
the evils of Spanish rule in the Philippines. A sequel, El
filibusterismo (1891; The Reign of Greed),
Rizal returned to the Philippines in 1992. He founded a
nonviolent-reform society, the Liga Filipina, in Manila, and was
deported to Dapitan in Northwest Mindanao.

Rizal was arrested and tried for sedition by the
military. Found guilty, he was publicly executed by a firing
squad in Leyte.
It was argued by the Philippine historians that his
martyrdom convinced Filipinos that there was no
alternative to independence from Spain. On the eve of
his execution, while confined in Fort Santiago, Rizal
wrote “Último adiós” (“Last Farewell”), a masterpiece of
19th-century Spanish verse
