effectively persuades or dissuades .

good argument cannot be overemphasized. Persuasive
devices are like arsenals that one uses in order to get
the desired response or action from the reader.

3. Examples
 The use of examples will help you to write an argument
that is not vague and weak. You can give examples
taken from things that you have observe around you,
which you read in a newspaper or magazine article,
saw on a television programme or which you make up
on your own.

4. Comparisons and Contrasts
 By using comparisons and contrasts, you show the
similarities and differences between things. You can
start your comparison and contrast with link words or
phrases such as : but, in spite of, while, in addition to,
although, while, on the other hand, similarly.

5. Statistics and Relevant Authorities
 Statistical information is very effective in making your
argument more persuasive and valid , since you are
working with facts. Ensure your that the statistics that
you use are relevant to your topic.
 The use of expert opinion is also an effective means of
supporting your argument. You must ensure that the
authorities that you use say is relevant to you topic and
will therefore add credibility to your position. Avoid
making claims for authorities that do not exist or
making up your statements.

6. Repetition
 Ask any expert and they will tell you that repetition is essential
when you are trying to persuade someone. The use of repetition
will make your argument more compelling. You can use this
technique by making your point in various ways or by repeating
a word or phrase throughout your essay.

 Hyperbole
 Irony and sarcasm

7. Structure of a Persuasive Essay
A persuasive piece can take many forms. However to make life a
little easier for some students , suggest that students stick to the
five paragraph essay. Your essay should include
 An introduction that clearly and forcefully states your position
and outlines at least three main points that support your stance.
 The Body of the essay is where you argue each main point in a
separate paragraph. Be sure to use as many persuasive devices to
make your argument compelling.
 The Conclusion- your conclusion should be a summary of your
main points. Ensure that you end your essay by forcefully
reiterating your main argument.
