This project is a water level indicator that uses an 8-line to 3-line priority encoder (IC 74148) to encode the water level sensed by resistors into a binary number displayed on a 7-segment hexadecimal display. It can sense 7 different water levels in a tank by running a connection from ground through the tank water to inputs of the encoder. The encoder outputs the binary representation of the water level. The display then shows the level as a single hexadecimal digit. Potential applications include automatic water level controllers for homes, businesses, and vehicles to control pumps and indicate fuel levels.

Head losses
Major Losses
Minor Losses
Definition • Dimensional Analysis • Types • Darcy Weisbech Equation • Major Losses • Minor Losses • Causes Head Losses
3. • Head loss is loss of energy per unit weight. • Head = Energy of Fluid / Weight • Head losses can be – Kinetic Head – Potential Head – Pressure Head 6/10/2015 4Danial Gondal Head Loss
4. • Kinetic Head – K.H. = kinetic energy / Weight = v² /2g • Potential Head – P.H = Potential Energy / Weight = mgz /mg = z • Pressure Head – P.H = P/ ρ g 6/10/2015 5
5. • (P/ ρ g) + (v² /2g ) + (z) = constant • (FL-2F-1L3LT-2L-1T2) + (L2T-2L1T2)+(L) = constant • (L) + (L) + (L) = constant • As L represent height so it is dimensionally L. 6/10/2015 6 Dimensional Analysis
6. • However the equation (P/ ρ g) + (v² /2g ) + (z) = constant Is valid for Bernoulli's Inviscid flow case. As we are studying viscous flow so (P1/ ρ g) + (v1² /2g ) + (z1) = EGL1(Energy Grade Line At point 1) (P2/ ρ g) + (v2² /2g ) + (z2) = EGL2(Energy Grade Line At point 2) 6/10/2015 7 Head Loss
7. • For Inviscid Flow EGL1 - EGL2= 0 • For Viscous Flow EGL1 - EGL2= Hf 6/10/2015 8 Head Loss
8. MAJOR LOSSES IN PIPES
9. •Friction loss is the loss of energy or “head” that occurs in pipe flow due to viscous effects generated by the surface of the pipe. • Friction Loss is considered as a "major loss" •In mechanical systems such as internal combustion engines, it refers to the power lost overcoming the friction between two moving surfaces. •This energy drop is dependent on the wall shear stress (τ) between the fluid and pipe surface. 6/10/2015 10 Friction Loss
10. •The shear stress of a flow is also dependent on whether the flow is turbulent or laminar. •For turbulent flow, the pressure drop is dependent on the roughness of the surface. •In laminar flow, the roughness effects of the wall are negligible because, in turbulent flow, a thin viscous layer is formed near the pipe surface that causes a loss in energy, while in laminar flow, this viscous layer is non-existent. 6/10/2015 11 Friction Loss
11. Frictional head losses are losses due to shear stress on the pipe walls. The general equation for head loss due to friction is the Darcy-Weisbach equation, which is where f = Darcy-Weisbach friction factor, L = length of pipe, D = pipe diameter, and V = cross sectional average flow velocity.
Hierarchical Digital Twin of a Naval Power SystemKerry Sado
A hierarchical digital twin of a Naval DC power system has been developed and experimentally verified. Similar to other state-of-the-art digital twins, this technology creates a digital replica of the physical system executed in real-time or faster, which can modify hardware controls. However, its advantage stems from distributing computational efforts by utilizing a hierarchical structure composed of lower-level digital twin blocks and a higher-level system digital twin. Each digital twin block is associated with a physical subsystem of the hardware and communicates with a singular system digital twin, which creates a system-level response. By extracting information from each level of the hierarchy, power system controls of the hardware were reconfigured autonomously. This hierarchical digital twin development offers several advantages over other digital twins, particularly in the field of naval power systems. The hierarchical structure allows for greater computational efficiency and scalability while the ability to autonomously reconfigure hardware controls offers increased flexibility and responsiveness. The hierarchical decomposition and models utilized were well aligned with the physical twin, as indicated by the maximum deviations between the developed digital twin hierarchy and the hardware.
CFD Simulation of By-pass Flow in a HRSG module by R&R Consult.pptxR&R Consult
CFD analysis is incredibly effective at solving mysteries and improving the performance of complex systems!
Here's a great example: At a large natural gas-fired power plant, where they use waste heat to generate steam and energy, they were puzzled that their boiler wasn't producing as much steam as expected.
R&R and Tetra Engineering Group Inc. were asked to solve the issue with reduced steam production.
An inspection had shown that a significant amount of hot flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes, where the heat was supposed to be transferred.
R&R Consult conducted a CFD analysis, which revealed that 6.3% of the flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes without transferring heat. The analysis also showed that the flue gas was instead being directed along the sides of the boiler and between the modules that were supposed to capture the heat. This was the cause of the reduced performance.
Based on our results, Tetra Engineering installed covering plates to reduce the bypass flow. This improved the boiler's performance and increased electricity production.
It is always satisfying when we can help solve complex challenges like this. Do your systems also need a check-up or optimization? Give us a call!
Work done in cooperation with James Malloy and David Moelling from Tetra Engineering.

2. INTRODUCTION :
This water level indicator consists of 8 to 3 encoder (74148- 8 line to 3 line
priority encoder) with some water indication arrangement. The encoded level is
displayed on a 7 segment digital display. This circuit uses one ‘Hex display’, it
doesn’t require driver IC to encode. It makes the implementation simple.
o Components Required:
Power supply
Resistors (10kΩ x8, 100Ω x3)
IC 74148encoder
IC 7404 NOTgate
Hex display
Connectingwires
Bread board
o Introduction to apparatus:
Encoder (IC 74148):
A priority encoder is a circuit that compressesmultiple binary inputsinto a
smaller number of outputs. The outputof a priority encoder is the binary
representation of the originalnumber starting from zero of the most
significant inputbit. They are often used to control interruptrequests by
acting on the highest priority request.
Resistor:
Resistor is a passivetwo-terminal electrical component that
implements electrical resistance as a circuit element. Resistors act to
reducecurrentflow, and, at the same time, act to lower voltage levels
within circuits.
In electronic circuits, resistors are used to limit currentflow, to
adjustsignal levels, bias active elements, terminate transmission
lines amongother uses.
3. HEX Display:
A HEX display is a form of electronic display device for displaying decimal
numerals that is an alternative to the morecomplex dotmatrix displays.
These displaysarewidely used in digital clocks, electronic meters, basic
calculators, and other electronic devices that display numericalinformation
CIRCUIT DIAGRAM :
4. WORKING :
Water level in the tank or any reservoir is sensed using simple pull up resistor
arrangement.
Here we define 7 levels in the reservoir. The sensed values are connected to an
encoder circuit. The encoder circuit consists of a 74148 IC, which is 8 to 3 line
encoder.
A connection from ground is dipped in water reservoir. When water level rises,
the ground comes in contact with the particular pin of encoder input.
Without the ground contact, the encoder input is Vcc through the pullup resistors.
For each and every level the encoder produces corresponding binary digits.
Next section is the ‘HEX Display’ which is a special type of 7 segment display. It is
easier to use than the regular seven-segment display because it is already
decoded. Each hexadecimal digit is displayed when its 4 bit binary equivalent is
received as input, as shown in the truth table below.
APPLICATIONS :
Automatic Water level Controller can be used in Hotels, Factories, Homes
Apartments, Commercial Complexes, Drainage, etc., It can be fixed for single phase
motor, Single Phase Submersibles, Three Phase motors. (For 3Æ and Single Phase
Submersible Starter is necessary) and open well, Bore well and Sump. We can
control two motor and two sumps and two overhead tanks by single unit.
5. Automatic water levelcontroller will automatically START the pump set as soon as
the water level falls below the predetermined level (usually 1/2 tank) and shall
SWITCH OFF the pump set as soon as tank is full.
