Gas Turbine
• It is a type of internal combustion engine
• Basic Operation is similar to that of the steam power plant
• Difference from steam power plant air is used instead of water

Types of Gas Turbine
Turbojet Turbofan
Turboprop
Afterbuming Turbojet
• Jet engine in which the jet gases also
operate a turbine-driven compressor for
compressing the air drawn into the engine.
• An aircraft powered by a turbojet.
6/24/2015 7
Turbojet
• A jet engine in which a turbine-driven
fan provides additional thrust.
• An aircraft powered by a turbofan
6/24/2015 8
Turbofan
• A jet engine in which a turbine is used
to drive a propeller.
• An aircraft powered by a turboprop.
6/24/2015 9
Turboprop
• An afterburner or "reheat jet pipe" is a
combustion chamber added to reheat
the turbine exhaust gases.
• Very high fuel consumption
• Four times higher fuel consumption than
that of the main engine.
• Used in supersonic aircraft, most being
military aircraft.

Working of Gas Turbine
• Engine derive its power from burning fuel in a combustion chamber
• It has a second turbine acting as an air compressor mounted on the
same shaft
• The gas turbine is comprised of three main components:
– Compressor
– Combustor
– Turbine
• The working fluid is air
• Air is compressed in the compressor
6/24/2015 12
Working of Gas Turbine
• Compressed air is mixed with fuel
• Burned by the combustor under constant pressure conditions in the
combustion chamber
• The resulting hot gas expands through the turbine to perform work
• Much of the power produced in the turbine is used to run the
compressor and do useful work
• The system is an open system

Applications of
Gas Turbines
• Gas turbines are used in many naval vessels, where they are valued
for their high power to weight ratio and their ships resulting
acceleration and ability to get underway quickly.
6/24/2015 16
Marine Application
• To move an airplane through the air, we have to use some kind
of propulsion system to generate thrust.
• The most widely used form of propulsion system for modern
aircraft is the gas turbine engine.
• Turbine engines come in a variety of forms.
• Micro gas turbines are used in BLADON JET ENGINE.
6/24/2015 17
Jet Application
• Bladon Jet Engine is a new generation of green and quiet efficient
power units.
• Their small size, light weight and high output deliver significant
advantages over traditional reciprocating engines.
6/24/2015 18
Bladon Jet Engine
• The use of gas turbines for generating electricity dates back to 1939
• Today, gas turbines are one of the most widely-used power
generating technologies
• Installations of such turbine not normally
used for base load electricity generation
but for bringing power to remote sites such as oil and gas fields
• Such turbines can produce power up to 5MW to 500MW
