The Events And Encounters I Experienced On My Practicum
Introduction The purpose of the following report is to discuss the events and encounters I
experienced on my practicum. I completed my practicum with Commercial Vehicle Enforcement,
based out of Lethbridge, AB. I completed five, eight hour shifts, totaling to 40 hours. I had the
opportunity to ride along with two different peace officers. This allowed me to see two different
perspectives and ways of thinking with regards to the commercial vehiclejob. I completed by
practicum on the following dates and times: January 22, (2016) 1400 2200. January 23, 24
(2016) 1000 1800, and February 6, 7 (2016) 0700 1500. For the duration of my practicum we
patrolled many different areas and counties. We were not restricted to a small district and had
freedom to move about the Lethbridge district as we saw necessary.
Communication
I observed many different styles of verbal and non verbal communication throughout my
practicum. On one of the very first traffic stops myself and John Remus, the officer I rode along
with, made was due to a license plate not being visible. I noticed some key aspects of non verbal
communication. Upon approaching the window of a large semi truck we were met with a young
man who was clearly nervous and unaware of the reason for the stop. John stepped up onto the
running board of the semi and introduced himself and his occupation. John then notified the young
man of the reason for the stop and asked for the license and registration for the truck. John s

Sea Port Importance
Sea port plays an important role of a countries economy and it is related to positive economic
growth and development. The economic history showed that it plays major role to growth of any
countries economy and development such as Britain, Spain, Portugal have sea ports that played in
the development of their economies.Establishment of a deep sea porthas become strategically very
critical for Bangladesh considering its potential impact on the development and economic growth
of the country. Deep sea port development has positive effects on employment and revenue
earnings of a country. It is significantly impact both locally regionally and nationally. In our
country, Sonadia island is a small island of about 9 square kilometers, offshore of the Cox s Bazar
coast in ChittagongDivision, thatis a potential as a deep water port lying on the Bay of Bengal. It
could serve the landlocked parts of India, Myanmar and China.
In fact, the leading sector of a country like Singapore Japan has its owndeep sea port.
Theoretically, sea ports are an economicinfrastructure with significant multiplier effects on the
domestic economy. For Bangladesh, there are atleast four significant reasons for establishing a
deep sea port in Sonadia. For example, coal supply for the power plants to be established in
Moheshkhali, growing seaborne trade needs of the future; to go along with the global shipping
trend of moving towards larger tonnage; and to utilize our geographical advantage to become a

Liquid Permeability of Porous Media
1.0Summary This experiment is conducted to determine the liquid permeability of porous
media. The apparatus used in the experiment is the liquid permeameter. The liquid used in this
experiment is water. Three membrane samples of different thickness (0.1, 0.2, 0.3 cm) are used
as the porous media. The determination of the permeability is carried out using elevated
pressure test. Each sample is tested for 5 times at different values of pressure gradient which are
5, 10, 15, 20 and 30 psi. In order to obtain more accurate data, ensure that the membrane samples
to be test is fixed tightly and covers the o ring of the sample chamber completely. Values of
volumetric flow rates are obtained from the apparatus itself. For pressure gradient of 5... Show more

The change in pressure that occurs during the flow is ∆P and the volumetric flow rate (q) is
the amount of fluid that can flow through the medium over a period of time with respect to the
∆P. Permeability (k) is related to all the components by the Darcy s equation. Darcy s
equation: q=kA∆PµL ..... (1) The SI unit for permeability, k is m2. Permeability is also
measured in Darcy, D. 1 D is approximately 10 12m2. Factors affecting permeability are
membrane solubility, pressure, concentration and temperature of the molecules or solutes.
Permeability is also affected by size of the molecules of the fluids that passing through the
medium. Darcy s equation is valid for any Newtonian fluids and is only applicable for laminar
flow. The laminar flow is always achieved by groundwater but not always achieved by gas flows.
Laminar flow can be determined by computing the Reynolds number of the flow. Re= ПЃvDВµ 5.0

Short A Guy Ad Analysis
Analyzing Short a Guy There are always commercials that will leave a lasting impression on us,
making our dream somewhat of a reality. Sometimes it s possible that we may need a push or a
product to be directed to the goal that was far from our reach. Nike s Short a Guy from Wieden +
Kennedy is one such advertisement that appeals to the audience s emotion and further on motivates
them to live their dream. In the advertisement, a young man in his teens takes us on an

Bonin explains, These techniques exemplify Nike s core message of Just Do It with their own
imaginative methods. Nike used a young boy as their lead role to demonstrate their message of
embracing everything that s thrown at you. For example, the protagonist tries out soccer and scores
a goal appealing to the audience that trying something new can always be fun. In every scene, we
see the protagonist enjoying himself and not letting the moment of the game have too much of an
effect on the way he plays. This shows that without the athletic apparel Nike showcased on the
advertisement, you re more likely to dream then make your story a reality. Nike shows us that it
is more than just a brand. We clearly see that in the action filled scenes that bring the Nike
message into motion. Every scene is unexpected allowing us to live in the action of the protagonist
as the camera angles change with the scenery. We are put in the spotlight with the protagonist
showing us the joy and excitement of playing with different pro athletes. The experience is an
unforgettable one, which leaves a positive impression not only on the people but the Nike brand as
a whole. The advertisement shows that the first step to playing with the pros is to just do

Greek And Roman Contributions To Western Civilization
Western civilization was built on the contributions made by the Greek and Roman Empires. The
Romans constructed and instituted many essentials that we utilize today. Law, politics and
architecture are significant attributes that impacted western civilization. The buildings that serve as
important structures and monuments are influenced by Greek and Roman architecture. Not to
mention the beautiful sculptures that were created. The laws that we have abided by for centuries
originated in the Roman culture. As well as some of the political aspects of western civilization. All
of these components have impacted the way the western civilization functions. None of these ideas

This would be considered the first democracy. It was an important stepping stone in the Roman
culture. People played a part in the government similar to the way we do now in the western
world. There were different branches with similar function to those that are used today. The
legislative branch was comprised of a senate and assemblies. While the executive branch was
members who were elected in and responsible for controlling the military. There was the judicial
branch containing judges who were also elected in by an assembly. The Roman government was
ahead of its time and unconventional. Had these branches not been formed, ours might not have
ever been shaped to what they currently are. The Twelve Tables was the first documented laws. The
tables were designed for the protection of the people against abuses (Ancient Rome). During this
time period the laws included were appropriate for the circumstances. One such table says that
children s lives were essentially the discretion of the father. He could choose whether he wanted
to put the child/ren to death (Spielvogel). This obviously is not something we do today, but it
was thought to be appropriate in that era. There was also a table that states a man who is
summoned, must go to court. If not he would be forced to do so. This is the only table that we
follow as a law. Many of the tables we would not use today, but the idea of a

The Biofuel Industry
Biofuels have been used as a source of energy for thousands of years. Wood was the first biofuel
to be used as a means to create fires for cooking. Since that time we have discovered numerous
ways to use them and the various forms of biofuels that are available for use. Presently our use of
biofuels consists largely of additives to gasoline in the form of ethanol. Ethanol is found in almost
all of our gasoline products today, in which about 10% is typically mixed as an additive. Some gas
stations are now offering nearly pure ethanol fuelknown as E85 which is 85% ethanol. This makes
ethanol the most common biofuelused worldwide. In response to this, farmers around the world
have increased biofuel plant production as a means to meet the new growing demand for it. As
time goes on, more modern farming practices are expected to continue to increase the output at
which farmers can grow corn and other ethanol producing plants thereby fueling the biofuel gas
industry. With more resources available to use, ethanol will be an even cheaper additive than it is
now.
Biofuels as a whole are made up of a large variety of organisms or their byproducts, leaving a
multiple of sources to choose from. This is what makes biofuel energy an attractive source of fuel
for the future. One company named Algenol is leading the world in algae research development
that they claim will revolutionize the biofuel industry completely. They are working on having
algae produce ethanol directly

a new tool with Windows 10 called Windows Imaging and Configuration Designer , also referred

Challenges Base Applications In our base image we currently include into the image several
base applications, these are both baked into the actual image file and installed after the OS
utilizing a Task Sequence. With WICD we found it difficult and time consuming to utilize this
toolset to try and include all of our base applications into the provisioning pack process, due the
nature of the wrapper, applications having prompts that cannot be answered, and the nature of
these applications frequently changing a different solution is needed. What we found was that
instead of trying to include all of the base applications in the provisioning pack in and of itself
we only include the SCCM client and then we created an SCCM Task Sequence that can be
executed after the other tasks of the provisioning packs are completed and a Tech signs into the
device. If we wish to try and approach this by making the provisioning pack further inclusive it
will take a large time investment, both upfront and continually as the version of these applications
change every 3 6 months. Naming One of the steps in our imaging process today is to apply a
standard naming convention based on the chassis, OS, OS architecture, site code, and the last X of
the serial for randomization. Due to the complex nature of this convention it is not compatible with
the provisioning pack process. The naming convention was put into place to allow IT resources to
quickly discern relevant information around an

Accuracy Of Restraint
Although evidence is limited, Schnelle et al. (2004) questioned the accuracy of the restraints use.
The General Accounting Office and the Health Human Services Office of Inspector General both
have noted the lack of known data related to the use of these practices (Joint Commission on the
Accreditation of Healthcare Organization [JCAHO], 2004). Research has revealed that the use of
restraints varies dramatically from facility to facility with a wide range of facility and staff
knowledge on how to prevent and avoid such use. According to Castle and Mor (1998), there are a
growing number of stakeholders that have developed guidelines for restraints use and the quality of
these guidelines have yet to be determined and their widespread application

Jesus Villahermosa Thesis
After reading the essay written by Jesus Villahermosa I believe his thesis statement is Given my
extensive experience dealing with violence in the workplace and at schools and colleges, I do not
think professors and administrators, let alone students, should carry guns . In his second
paragraph, he lays out reason as to why he feels this way and shows that he can be considered an
expert in firearmsafety. Giving information into his background reinforces his position and add to
his argument against arming people on college campuses. Some may be surprised that he is against
having armed professors and students on campusbecause of his background. However, I am not
surprised that he is strongly against having firearm toting professors, administrators and students
throughout campuses. He is properly trained, experienced with firearm safety and marksmanship
which in turn gives him great support to his argument. Villahermosa gave ample reasons to support
his argument against carrying weapons on college campuses throughout his essay. The most
persuasive reason he gives against guns on campus is Will faculty and staff members be prepared

He gave clear and abundant reasons to back up his argument and laid out many consequences for
having a policy that would allow guns on campus. With colleges already struggling financially a
policy allowing guns would bring even more need for funding to cash strapped institutions. The
training required would be extensive and costly to have competent people carrying and ready to use
their gun if needed. The risks involved in allowing guns on campus seem to be extremely high and
wildly unpredictable. It would make it harder for police to distinguish between the good guy and
the bad guy in a crisis. Schools and employees would be subjected to lawsuits and even
imprisonment if innocent bystanders are shot instead of intended

Foods That Influenced The World Essay
On November 25, we celebrated Thanksgiving. Most people had turkey and dressing, cranberry
sauce and pumpkin pie. While most people think of foods like pecan pie and cornbread stuffing as
being southern in origin, they don t realize that what their eating has it s roots in the native
American culture. I intend to show how much of the food we eat today was first cultivated by the
native people of the Americas. Moreover, the impact this food has had upon the world.
When the early explorers sailed back to Europe, they took with them plants and food native to the
new world. Foods like the tomato, corn, potatoes, chili peppers and chocolate. Through Spain, they

Vodka today commands 20% of the U.S. liquor market, and is one of the most popular drinks
worldwide. In America today the potato is a facet of everyday life from the mashed potatoes we eat
with our fast food chicken, to the potato that is a staple with pot roast, to everybody s favorite
McDonalds french fries.
The tomato is another plant that has acquired global prominence from humble origins. It
originated with the Inca and migrated north to the Maya and the Aztecs, where the Spanish
brought it to Europe, and like its cousin the potato, it is a member of the Nightshade family. The
tomato took sometime to gain a foothold as people believed it to be poisonous, but when it took
off, it took off energetically. The Italians and French were the first to embrace it. Today the tomato
is taken for granted as a common menu item. We consume it everyday in pizza, Italian food, and in
almost any salad you can think of. It is the main ingredient of two of the world s most popular
condiment s ketchup and salsa.
There is another member of the Nightshade family that has made an incredible journey from its
humble origins member is the capsicum or chili pepper. When the Spanish came to the new world
there were only four types of pepper the Cayenne, Bell, Jalapeno, and the Tabasco. The pepper then
began its long strange journey of transformation, and worldwide

Equality In Sports
Introduction Title IX changed the philosophy of sports establishing that a person s sex cannot
deny their participation in sports. This allowed women one step closer to equality throughout
the workplace, at school, and even at home. Back in the day, women were only destined to be a
housewife or a secretary. Not a lawyer, or involved in math and sciences, or even become a
business owner. Girls in classrooms would raise their hand less because they didn t have a reason
to retain knowledge and they knew acknowledging the question would be useless in the field they
choose to study. With Title IX, young girls are given the chance to play sports. Sports allow

Memorandum of Oral Pleading
Memorandum of Oral Pleading
Parties: Mr de Jong (Claimant) and Mini Coza (Defendant)
Date and time: Thursday 4th October 2012, 10:00hrs
Judge: Mr. de Vries
The Group: Pasi Lindqvist, Daan Bredenbeek, Nick Bruurmijn and Redmer van Berkum
Overview of the Facts and the Compensation Sought
On the 1st of January 2011 the claimant Mr. de Jong purchased a buggie through a German
provider Mini Coza, who operated in the Netherlands for €275. The buggie was to be used by the
claimant s over one year old son Daan.
According to the product description the buggie was suitable for kids aged one year onwards. The
claimant used the buggie in a proper and normal manner on a paved path without any serious
obstacles. Regardless of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Misrepresentation has occurred in the sense of providing misleading product description inducing
the claimant to buy the product i.e. to conclude the contract with the trader.
Because of the defective performance the council of the claimant suggests that the buggy shall be
replaced, as special performance on the part of the trader, with a similar product. This can be
established by Article 6:103, which states that the compensation can be paid in another form than
only money, in this case, a new buggy.
Tort Law Wrongful Act: Dutch Private Law (BW)
Tort Law and Wrongful Act shall be used in the claimant s case because of the fact that the
purchase price of the buggy has been below €500. Therefore the rules and regulations of product
liability do not hold, and the case needs to be considered in terms of a wrongful act.
First of all the fact that Mini Coza has manufactured a defect product, and furthermore the fact that
Mini Coza has let this faulty product to enter the market, which finally led to a one year old child
to fall down to the ground and hurt himself, can be considered as a wrongful act. This is
established by Article 6:162 in the Dutch Private Law, which measures the wrongful act.
Furthermore, this wrongful act has caused damages to the claimant s son, which can be represented
by the monetary damage (the medical costs) worth of €2500.

What Role Does Religion Play In The Army
The role that religion plays on a solider can be astronomical to the mental and subsequently the
physical state of a soldier. When a soldier is on the front line and fighting with their fellow soldiers
in a fire fight they need to mentally be present as well as physically for their fellow soldiers. In
these cases of being in the thick of the fighting many soldiers turn to their faith, this has a mental
effect on them, putting them in a state of mind that gives them a strength. This strength could be as
little as added confidence in the fight that keeps them grounded or as much as giving them
reassurance that if anything happens to them they have a higher power there that will help and
comfort them. Religion permeates through the history

the fact CГЎndido is undocumented and Mexican, would Delaney gave twenty dollars to a white

Following the accident, when he took his car to the mechanic, he lied saying it was an animal who

Delaney is experiencing racist tendencies, by disregarding another being because of their race, and

population is all female. We see many Muslim patients from Arab countries. In any obstetric or
gynecology scenario Muslim women must have a female provider (Mclean et al., 2012). We had a
patient scheduled with one of the male physicians for the first obstetric appointment, where a
physical exam would be completed. When the patient arrived, her spouse informed the staff that
she cannot be seen by a male provider. The male physician was not familiar with this preference.
He was frustrated because when this patient presents to the hospital for delivery, there may not be a
female on call to care for her. Fortunately, there was another physician in clinic that day that could

Analysis Of The Poem Charge Of The Light Brigade And ...
While both Alfred Lord Tennyson and Wilfred Owen describe war in great detail in their works
Charge of the Light Brigade and Dulce Et Decorum Est, respectively, Tennyson describes the
courage and honor of warfare, whereas Owen goes into more detail about the horrors and
atrocities that go hand in hand with war. Tennyson describes a battle in which 600 bold and
courageous men storm a valley, which he refers to as the Valley of Death (line 7), to meet their
almost inevitable death. Owen in his Dulce et Decorum Est, describes a scene from World War I in
which soldiers are bombarded with gas shells. In this essay I will argue that despite their differing
subjects and themes, both Tennyson and Owen s work prove that the honor and courage of the
soldiers comes directly from the hardships they must endure. The fact that the men knew the
dangers of fighting the battle and knew that they were facing death is the factor in which
Tennyson draws the theme of courage. In line 23, he states: Boldly they rode and well, into the
Jaws of Death (lines 23 4). In order to describe the experience of war throughout his work, Alfred
Lord Tennyson describes the courage of the 600 men who rode into the Jaws of Death, to fight for
victory even though they were facing inevitable death. Although they fight valiantly, they are
eventually ransacked by the gun fire of their opposition. The 600 are forced to retreat back from
the valley, where even more men are killed. Also, by using the

Unified Codes of Behavior for Soccer Essay
Unified Codes of Behavior for Soccer Soccer, or football to most of the world, has been one of

Clear market positioning is essential for retailing industry. Coles Myer suffers from the lack of
focus and clear strategy due to the fact that the company is simply too big to efficiently mange its
division.
More importantly, Coles Myer is trying to operate a combined strategy, the two are, high volume,
low margin retailers (e.g. Kmart and Target) and retail specialists focusing on a single retail
category (e.g. Officeworks, Megamart and Myer Grace Bros). Mead (2003: cited in Reading Pack)
commented that, these two types of retailing require different retailing skills and different corporate
and marketing strategies and separate and therefore, independent organisational structures.
Furthermore, there diversified interest in Coles Grace Bros, Target and Kmart do create a
cannibalistic effect. By offering product discounts with no convergence to the business strategies of
the other two, detrimental effects on the sales performances across all three brands do occur.
3.2 Customer Loyalty
Hannen (2001: cited in Reading Pack) said that keeping existing customers is cheaper than finding
the new ones. However, the retailing industry is a generic market and a lot of effort is needed to
build meaningful relationships with the consumers.
Coles Myer has done very poorly in retaining existing customer in two ways. Firstly, Fly Buys as a
loyalty program is not appealing to consumers as they have to spend a significant amount to attain

Problems Faced By Airports And Airports
One of the major issues at airports is improving efficiency, flow of all traffic to reduce the
possibility of delays. After safety, everyone involved in any sort of airport operations, works on
increasing efficiency in order to avoid delays and having to spend additional money. As the airports
operations increase, the people in charge will have to come up with solutions to avoid setbacks.
Airportplanners have to come up with ideas in order to improve airport facilities and increase the
efficiency of the flow. The challenges that come with this type of projects is that sometimes the
airports don t have much room for improvement within the airport and don t have room to expand
due to surrounding neighborhoods. This is where they have to find the right balance for capacity
and delay. To solve this problem first they have to find the hitch and then focus on working on that
specific area. For example, it can be a specific terminal, runways, taxiways, or not enough gates.
Other alternatives to the matter can be working on distributing the traffic through the off peak
times, or to start using other areas to within the airport to decrease the traffic at one specific area.
Capacity can be view in two different ways. One is at the rate the aircraft can be handled. Example,
the airport may be able to handle the morning rush without having any delays, assuming everything
runs smooth without any disturbances. Practical capacity is the amount of operations in the airfield
with a small

New Imperialism Effects
The economic effects of new imperialism seeped throughout the world. The European countries
standard of living increased since people s income elevated above the subsistence level. These
countries thrived. According to political economist John Stuart Mill, the European s imperialism
of free trade over African regions, led to improvement in the process of production in every
extension of the market. These European countries had an altogether disproportionate share of the
wealth and traffic of the world, at the expense of the distant African countries. The imperialist
economies prospered, and even today still be some of the most financially stable areas. The
opposite is quite true as well. The financially abused states had their resources... Show more content

New Imperialism called for a system of administration where the dominance of the home country
was esteemed. Made easier by the fact that Africa in the nineteenth century was not unified,
European nationalists capitalized on the lack of cohesion in Africa during the nineteenth century
and overcame small villages with their intimidating and structured way of government. Great
Britain established a protectorate in Egypt which practically synonymous with ownership. In a
protectorate, the dominant country takes the other country under its protection to retain its
ownership from other powers. Colonial governments were also created, meaning that the citizens
of the imperialist power would leave to go live in the new territory as permanent settlers, while still
considering themselves under the rule of the imperialist power. Western European countries
affected the developments of people within their spheres of influence, which directly correlates
with the size of the country s territory, even though no formal authority reigned over the natives of
these lands. Having control over, or practically owning, more territory served as a powerful symbol
since the highly regarded sphere of influence grew. A growing obsession with the popularity of new

Sociocultural Food Taboos Under The Larger Umbrella...
Preface In this paper, I aim to document various sociocultural food taboos under the larger
umbrella concept of the sacred and profane, a sociologically ubiquitous dichotomy found
worldwide. I will do so by introducing various cultural examples of food taboos and explanative
theories of food avoidance practices. Ideally, this paper will introduce the reader with the
complex social pre and proscriptions of the sacred and profane and the affect of which on food
consumption practices. Food taboo is present in all societies in one form or another. The extent
of food taboos vary between cultures and societies, yet restriction of food resources is ever
present in all social systems, even when the taboo goes unnoticed or is accepted under the guise
of normative behavior of a particular social group. Supporting this point is the simple comparison
of all available food resources to consumed food resources. In no society is the complete available
food resources used as food, or perceived as fit for consumption. The food perceived as fit for
consumption is considered sacred, nourishing, and healthy, while food resources considered unfit
are those tethered to concepts of the profane, unclean, and unhealthy, which ultimately harm the
physical and spiritual body. Food taboo acts as a method to ensure or regain both spiritual and
physical health and is ubiquitously concerned with the maintenance of wellbeing. Animistic
societies are imbedded in a universe of spirits, which when

Winter Symbolism In Literature Essay
When you think of winter what do you usually think about? I think about the freezing temperatures,
the ice, and the snow. However, in literature winter can be symbolic of many things. The dark,
sadness, old age, and death are just some of the things winter can symbolize in literature. The
songs California dreamin by the Mamas and Papas and A hazy shade of winterby Simon and
Garfunkel are both about winter but mean very different things. Foster s How to Read
Literature Like a Professor will also be referenced in order to help show the meanings of these
pieces. California dreaming is a very simple and straightforward song;. It has three short verses
and a chorus that repeats a couple of times. California dreamin on such a winter s day is repeated
throughout the song. This is the main essence of the song. The narrator is telling us that he likes
the warm and sunny days of California more than the cold harsh winter. Throughout this song
we learn of other things that the narrator dislikes which are gray skies and brown leaves. These
signify the arrival of winter which saddens the narrator. There s also a deeper meaning that can
be figured out with the help of Foster s work. In his book he tells us that the cold often can
symbolize sadness and that warm often symbolizes happiness. One of the many possible
meanings that the mamas and papas could be trying to convey is that it isn t easy to be happy.
In the song the narrator arrives at a church and is going to stay. Even though he isn t very happy
he would rather be in the church than in the cold as shown in the next verse where he starts to
complain about the cold again. We can learn from this message to be thankful for what we have
even though it isn t what we want because it could always be worse. In A Hazy Shade of Winter
by Simon and Garfunkel the narrator sends a clear message that he does not like the arrival of
winter. When you hear the song you can tellhow much he doesn t like the winter anytime anything
related to it is said. His voice becomes low, dull and lifeless. The way he sings tries to makes you
associate sadness with the winter. To the narrator the winter may be sad because it is cold but if
we look deeper into the song we

Space Travel Persuasive Essay
Humans have always been interested in space and the wonder in which it may hold. In the past,
humans worshiped the stars as if they were gods while also studying their position to give them

space has been seen by many as the new frontier or the home beyond earth. Society have even

humans living in space and the present of alliances. Yet there is still controversy on the need to

ongoing debate on whether not the money used for space travel could be better beneficially use

company that Hunter observed was Franklin Corporation, a furniture manufacturer. This company
has been building recliner chairs and other upholstered furniture since 1970 (Hunter, 2008, p.631).
The main manufacturing facilities are located in central Mississippi, USA. The article stated that
Franklin Corporation manufactures a large variety of upholstered furniture while employing about

while utilizing computer numerical controlled (CNC) cutting of foam, plywood components, fabric,

competition, Franklin management decided to adopt a new way of doing business, which is the

Compare And Contrast Utilitarian, Libertarian, And...
Comparison and Contrast of Utilitarian, libertarian, and deontological ethical theories Ethical
theories are based on previous explained ethical principles each emphasizing different aspects of
an ethical dilemma leading to a resolution based on the particular theory guidelines. Utilitarian
theory is found in the ability to predict the consequences of the action and so the choice that
yields the most benefit to most individuals is the ethically correct choice. This theory allows for
the comparison of the predicted solutions (The Blackwell Guide to Ethical Theory, 2013). The
outcomes will look at the results and the positive or negative effects. It is at this point that these
actions are considered to be right or wrong. Goodness is when there is an emphasis on promoting
activities that will create happiness versus despair. The outcome and the levels of joy will
determine if specific actions are considered to be morally correct. This theory mainly focuses on
the ends. Deontological theory states that people should adhere to their duties and obligations
when analysing an ethical problem, hence expression of the view to either forbid or permit actions
(Kolb, 2008). Deontological theory does not provide the rationale for deciding individual duties
and may bring about conflict of duty. Deontological views spell... Show more content on

III.Results:
For this lab my classmates and I all had to go to different locations to collect the data that was

on our sheet. For my location I was out in front of the Center for Environmental and Life Sciences

the location had direct sun light that happened to be shining from the right side. The wind was

For number one we looked at the grass and it was yellow with wet soil. Number two was the
mulch and it was black, brown, and dry. Number three was the rocks and they were large, smooth,
and greyish. The characteristics of the three sub locations affected out data in many different ways.

Furthermore, shares were done too cheaply meaning it did not maximise governmental sums hence

Roman Republic And The Roman Empire
Roman Republic, one of the most famous republic in ancient time, established a form of
government comprising three main parts: a few magistrates, a Senate, and several assemblies.
Roman Republic was the period of ancient Roman civilization starting with the collapse of the
Roman Kingdom in 509 BC, and ended in 27 BC with the founding of the Roman Empire. The
government had representatives selected by citizen and ended because of the civil war between
powerful generals including Antony and Brutus. The Roman Republic was established in 509
B.C. BC after overthrowing the Etruscan kings. As democracy was getting started in Athens,
the Roman aristocrats (the rich) wanted to get rid of Etruscan kings so they can get more
power. They needed the poor men to fight for them. So they promised the poor men that they
would be given power in the new government, if they can help get rid of the Etruscan kings. The
poor men decided to help, and together the king was threw out in 510 B.C. But once the kings
were out, the rich did not give the poor men what they had promised. So the poor men protested
and went on strike. The Roman aristocrats had to make a concession, and they let the poor vote.
People in Roman Republic voted for representatives who express their opinion like the way
United States does. But the only people who could be elected to the Roman Senate were the rich
people. Then the poor made the aristocrats agree that the poor men could also elect tribunes, who
can say no to any

The Long Telegram Analysis
In the wake of World War II, Joseph Stalin, the leader of the Soviet Union delivered a largely
controversial speech in the Bolshoi theater located near the center of Moscow. In Stalin s speech, he
articulated upon the idea that Communism and Capitalism could not co exist. He claimed to the
people that the Soviet Unionwas the only key factor in eliminating the Axis powers from the war.
Only 13 days after Stalin s speech in Moscow, George Kennan s 8,000 word telegram was sent to
Washington D.C. This telegram discussed what Kennan believed Stalin s next move in Europe
would be. Kennan felt that Stalin would move to Iran and Turkey as its next targets. Also, this
telegram, nicknamed The Long Telegram contained Kennan s belief which was the only way to
help Eastern Europe was to provide financial aid so that these countries would not turn to
Communism because of their financial downfall. Not only did Stalin s speech land heavily upon
the U.S. but it also shocked England. On March 5th, 1946, Winston... Show more content on

On March 12th, 1947, Truman addressed a joint session of Congress, in this meeting, Truman
asked for $400,000,000 that he would need to aid both Greece and Turkey, to prevent Soviet
influence. This money given to both Greece and Turkey would assist these countries to rebuild their
governments. Truman called this plan the Truman Doctrine. In order to fulfill Truman s request, the
newly appointed Republican members of the house would have to contradict what they had been
elected to do; focus on domestic policy. This request also completely shifted the relationship
between the U.S. and the Soviet Union from one of friendship to one of containment. The U.S. had
to contain the Soviet Union so that its sphere of influence could not grow. Congress approved the
Truman Doctrine and granted Greece and Turkey $400,000,000 to rebuild their

##s And Feelings Of Heathcliff In Wuthering Heights, By...
After reading Wuthering Heights, read Remembrance by Emily BrontГ« and compare the actions
and feelings of Heathcliff in the final chapter of Wuthering Heights to the feelings of the speaker in
the final stanza of Remembrance. The novel Wuthering Heights and the poem Remembrance , both
written by Emily BrontГ«, feature protagonists who must cope with the death of their lovers, and in
many ways, the two characters are similarly affected by this. The actions and feelings of Heathcliff
in the last chapter in Wuthering Heights, however, stand in sharp contrast to the last stanza of
Remembrance . This contrast demonstrates the personal differences of the characters and how they
were affected differently by their losses. Heathcliff, the protagonist of Wuthering Heights, and the
speaker of Remembrance have different views on love(both before and after death). Consequently,
while Heathcliff embraces death in the final chapter to be with his love, the speaker of
Remembrances learns to stop dwelling in the past.
A crucial difference between Heathcliff and the speaker in Remembrance is that the two
characters have very different perspectives on love, death, and loss. In the final chapter of
Wuthering Heights, when Heathcliff is aware that he is dying, he is joyful for the first time since
Catherine s death. Furthermore, as Nelly notes, he constantly seems to be staring at something two
feet away from him with a mixture of pleasure and pain almost as if he is seeing an

this when she speaks to Iago about his views on women. Even though Othello and Desde mona are

Effect of Technology on Modern Society Essay
The evolution of technology has changed society in both positive and negative ways. People all
over the world use and benefit from modern technology. Technology has simplified the access to
many tools people need in education, medicine, communication, transportation, etc. However,
using it too often has its drawbacks as well. In most cases, the time of finishing projects is cut by
more than half with the help of technology. Many people do not realize that technology has its
negative affects society as well, and its rapid advances has changed life for worse in a number of

Also, students today can talk with their teachers from home, and learn all the information from
the Internet and finish a research assignment that used to take days because of books, in a matter
of hours. But, students of the newer generations seem to have many problems with writing
complete sentences or spelling words because of the frequent usage of text messages and the
many hundreds of acronyms used to shorten texts. But besides memory problems, technology
usage can cause serious diseases as well. Health problems caused by technology have turned into
a big problem, especially among teenagers. People, especially teens, pay a high price for relying
on social media, video games, and TV, especially when it comes to sleep. The internet has
become an addiction, we need it like we need air to breathe. This addiction seems to be the cause
of several serious health problems such as sleep deprivation, vision problems, obesity, etc.
Addiction to technology has also made people lazy. Instead of going outside, playing sports and
running around, they would rather stare at a screen, inside and the only exercise they get is sitting
up in their chair and walking to the fridge for food. Even though the implementation of robots has
reduced the risk to human life because they can perform some risky jobs instead of humans, robots
themselves can create risky

Political Machines And Political Power
Political Machines
Political Machine is a term given to an unofficial organization designed to keep a certain political
party or political group in power. Although Political Machines were originally designed for
positive actions, a group of political leaders turned this positive intention into devastating
corruption. As power was put into the wrong hands, large cities of the United States were put in
jeopardy. Political Machines caused corruption in the larger cities and states of the United States,
especially New York.

In most years between 1865 and 1930, Patronage Machines ruled many large states of America such
as, Minneapolis, Pittsburg, Los Angeles, St. Louis, Detroit, Chicago, Philadelphia, New Orleans,
and New York (Reid). For example, according to Steffens, one of the most significant early
muckraking stories happened here in Minneapolis, and although it is sometimes overlooked in the
general journalism histories of the time, it remains important to our understanding of how the
field evolved . Fifteen of the seventeen united state s senators were Republicans, and both
Pittsburgh and Philadelphia were controlled by powerful and long lived Republican city
machines (Pennsylvania). Chicago had one of the longest lasting histories of the use of Political
Machines. In some areas, Political Machines, such as Chicago s Democratic Party organization
continued to be important until the 1970 s. Although these states were all controlled by Political
Machines, New York s city hall, Tammany Hall, was the most affected. During this time period,
reformers opposed the machine, calling for such improvements as civil service test for jobs,
closer control over how the city spent its money and watching the polls on election day. Over time
such reforms weakened the power of Political Machines (Rosenfeld). Political Machines power
waned during the tenure of New York City. Mayor Fiorello La Guardia (1934 1945), and the

Film directing lets a person express themselves through creating characters that can relate to one s
emotions and thoughts. Director Tim Burton has dictated many films, all containing a similar
aspects. However, he expresses a deeper message outside of the grimness and darkness of his films.
Four of his motion pictures include Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Edward Scissorhands,
Beetlejuice, and Big Fish. Within these films, Burton provides the message that family is defined
by love, not blood. This significance is developed through flashbacks and characterization amongst
protagonists. Tim Burton incorporates flashbacks in his films, allowing the audience to experience

creating tension between the two. Throughout the movie, series of flashbacks create more and
more conflict with Willy s dad and himself, to the point where he decides to abandon his home
and search for a new life. Within these memories, there is no connection between Wonka and his
dad. He learns to disregard how his dad wronged him and begins to focus his energy into what he

learned that in order to have a family, there needs to be a bond; something that was unaccounted

Embarking and Disembarking
3.8.3 Embarking and disembarking
In several cases the court determined the place of location by taking into consideration if the
passengers were exposed to the hazard inherent in aviation operations. It has been taken also into
consideration if the passenger was under the charge of control of a carrier or his agent. According
to Godfroid, the primary test should be whether the passenger was under the control of the carrier or
his agent, in addition the activity should be related to an activity of aviation. An injured passenger
who did not board, but is still in the terminal will be considered outside article 17, the same
applies to a passenger who had reached the baggage claim area. Article 17 applies when a
passenger was injured on the steps of the terminal building on his way to board the aircraft and
also when a passenger was injured on the apron by a baggage transport.
According to the U.K. Courts it is important to relate an accident to a specific flight, when cases
about embarking or disembarking are being solved. It is also important to consider the passenger
s location and if the passenger was about to enter or was actually entering the airplane it would
create an article 17 accident. In case an accident occurred elsewhere in the terminal, a consideration
have to made whether the passenger was required to be there by the carrier.
In another case a passenger in a wheelchair was injured while being transported up the terminal s

describes the characteristics of a young Vietnamese man in which O Brien may or may not have

the reader to engage in a critical thought process that fully bridges the author s mind to their own.
In O Brien s chapter, The Man I Killed , he attempts to humanize the enemy in a way that draws

wasn t so different after all. His jaw was in his throat, his upper lip and teeth were gone, his one

enemy (118). Throughout the novel, the author shows consistency with repeating stories and
lines in a way to present a greater image. He reminds the reader of details the elaborate his larger
view. When he writes of the man he killed, he wants the reader to imagine themselves in his
shoes, as he imagined himself in the enemies . As he carefully studies the dead man, he imagines
how the boy found himself in the war. By relating American society to the boy s village of My

and ways of life. By saying, he would have been taught that to defend the land was a man s
highest duty and highest privilege, he shows there is minimal difference between how most
Americans view the military and the duty of the villagers in My Khe (119). Although he had not
known the exact history of the boy, he attempted to illustrate in his own mind what his life may
have been like prior to the invasion. The inability for O Brien to walk away from the body as
Kiowa continued to pry him away says he was troubled by the similarities. Despite Kiowa saying it

The Epidemic Of Human Immunodeficiency Virus
What are scientists trying to doing to treat HIV?
The Problem:
The epidemic of Human Immunodeficiency Virus began in the early 1980 s and was thought to
be a homosexual related disease, as only homosexuals where reported as having the virus during
the early stages of discovering HIV/AIDS. It s believed that a virus similar to HIV first occurred in
some populations of chimpanzees in Africa, the virus crossed species by exposure of body fluids
mixing, during butchering or cooking of the animals(2). Today over 78 million people are reported
to have been infected with HIV, in 2012, AIDSrelated illnesses were the 6th leading cause of death

Advantages Of Lenovo
3.1 Recommended Future strategic direction to attain competitive advantage
3.1.1 Proposed strategy
It is important for a company to choose a relevant internationalization strategy in order to attain
competitive advantage. Basically, competitive advantage is a company s ability to perform in one
or more ways that competitors cannot or will not match (Philip Kotler, Gary Armstrong, 2007, p182)
As Lenovo has been successfully internationalizing into other country by using joint venture as
their strategy, the new relevant proposed strategy that the company can use is direct exporting.
Direct exporting is considered relevant to be used as the new strategy for Lenovo because it is the
least risky strategy of all. In fact, Lenovo can maximizes their profit and minimizing their risk in

As direct exporting is the new proposed strategy in 3.1.1, Lenovo will be focusing on the pressures
for global integration which is to seek cost reduction through economies of scale and arbitrage
benefits. As Lenovo wanted to attain competitive advantage through cost leadership strategy, they
first have to cut down their cost in order to be able to sell product with lower price. Hence, the
pressure of global integration in cost reduction is identified there.
The advantages that global integration can give to Lenovo through cost leadership are that they can
help Lenovo to save costs and achieve global efficiencies. They can also improve the quality of
product and processes. High quality product promotes global brand recognition and gives rise to
customer preference and efficient international marketing programs. They create economies of

Vegan Cinderella Analysis
Vegan Cinderella
Description
In the Netflix original, Easy. Entitled Vegan Cinderella by Joe Swanberg, we see an honest and
visceral depiction of modern young love. There are moments in our relationships when we lie to
our significant others, maybe even change a little bit of ourselves for them. In this episode, we
see a cast of mostly young twenty something year old lesbian females and follow the two main
characters through the first few days of a budding romance. We hear many awkward
conversations between the two women about veganism and there is a great sense of realism
within the story and the characters. You feel like these women could be any one of your friends,
almost as if you are also there with the characters. I think everyone at some point in their life has
tried to change themselves because they thought it is necessary in order for the other person to
like them. In this episode, we see Chase try to impress Jo by changing who she is in order to
impress her which is something we all can relate to. Joe Swanberg is known for his indie films and
shooting on 16mm and 35mm film. He also does not write scripts but writes a one page outline
where he has the characters use improvisation to fill in the blanks. He focuses on naturalism and
has little use for doing more than one or two takes. His on set brevity allows for his films to be shot
over the course of just a few weeks which helps to keep production costs down (Zakarin). The style
or genre of this film is

  • 2. The Events And Encounters I Experienced On My Practicum Introduction The purpose of the following report is to discuss the events and encounters I experienced on my practicum. I completed my practicum with Commercial Vehicle Enforcement, based out of Lethbridge, AB. I completed five, eight hour shifts, totaling to 40 hours. I had the opportunity to ride along with two different peace officers. This allowed me to see two different perspectives and ways of thinking with regards to the commercial vehiclejob. I completed by practicum on the following dates and times: January 22, (2016) 1400 2200. January 23, 24 (2016) 1000 1800, and February 6, 7 (2016) 0700 1500. For the duration of my practicum we patrolled many different areas and counties. We were not restricted to a small district and had freedom to move about the Lethbridge district as we saw necessary. Communication I observed many different styles of verbal and non verbal communication throughout my practicum. On one of the very first traffic stops myself and John Remus, the officer I rode along with, made was due to a license plate not being visible. I noticed some key aspects of non verbal communication. Upon approaching the window of a large semi truck we were met with a young man who was clearly nervous and unaware of the reason for the stop. John stepped up onto the running board of the semi and introduced himself and his occupation. John then notified the young man of the reason for the stop and asked for the license and registration for the truck. John s ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 4. Liquid Permeability of Porous Media 1.0Summary This experiment is conducted to determine the liquid permeability of porous media. The apparatus used in the experiment is the liquid permeameter. The liquid used in this experiment is water. Three membrane samples of different thickness (0.1, 0.2, 0.3 cm) are used as the porous media. The determination of the permeability is carried out using elevated pressure test. Each sample is tested for 5 times at different values of pressure gradient which are 5, 10, 15, 20 and 30 psi. In order to obtain more accurate data, ensure that the membrane samples to be test is fixed tightly and covers the o ring of the sample chamber completely. Values of volumetric flow rates are obtained from the apparatus itself. For pressure gradient of 5... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The change in pressure that occurs during the flow is ∆P and the volumetric flow rate (q) is the amount of fluid that can flow through the medium over a period of time with respect to the ∆P. Permeability (k) is related to all the components by the Darcy s equation. Darcy s equation: q=kA∆PВµL ..... (1) The SI unit for permeability, k is m2. Permeability is also measured in Darcy, D. 1 D is approximately 10 12m2. Factors affecting permeability are membrane solubility, pressure, concentration and temperature of the molecules or solutes. Permeability is also affected by size of the molecules of the fluids that passing through the medium. Darcy s equation is valid for any Newtonian fluids and is only applicable for laminar flow. In every scene, we see the protagonist enjoying himself and not letting the moment of the game have too much of an effect on the way he plays. The Romans constructed and instituted many essentials that we utilize today. Law, politics and architecture are significant attributes that impacted western civilization. The buildings that serve as important structures and monuments are influenced by Greek and Roman architecture. Not to mention the beautiful sculptures that were created. People played a part in the government similar to the way we do now in the western world. There were different branches with similar function to those that are used today. The legislative branch was comprised of a senate and assemblies. While the executive branch was members who were elected in and responsible for controlling the military. There was the judicial branch containing judges who were also elected in by an assembly. The Roman government was ahead of its time and unconventional. Had these branches not been formed, ours might not have ever been shaped to what they currently are. The Twelve Tables was the first documented laws. The tables were designed for the protection of the people against abuses (Ancient Rome). During this time period the laws included were appropriate for the circumstances. One such table says that children s lives were essentially the discretion of the father. He could choose whether he wanted to put the child/ren to death (Spielvogel). This obviously is not something we do today, but it was thought to be appropriate in that era. There was also a table that states a man who is summoned, must go to court. If not he would be forced to do so. This is the only table that we follow as a law. Many of the tables we would not use today, but the idea of a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. The Biofuel Industry Biofuels have been used as a source of energy for thousands of years. Wood was the first biofuel to be used as a means to create fires for cooking. Since that time we have discovered numerous ways to use them and the various forms of biofuels that are available for use. Presently our use of biofuels consists largely of additives to gasoline in the form of ethanol. Ethanol is found in almost all of our gasoline products today, in which about 10% is typically mixed as an additive. Some gas stations are now offering nearly pure ethanol fuelknown as E85 which is 85% ethanol. This makes ethanol the most common biofuelused worldwide. In response to this, farmers around the world have increased biofuel plant production as a means to meet the new growing demand for it. As time goes on, more modern farming practices are expected to continue to increase the output at which farmers can grow corn and other ethanol producing plants thereby fueling the biofuel gas industry. With more resources available to use, ethanol will be an even cheaper additive than it is now. Biofuels as a whole are made up of a large variety of organisms or their byproducts, leaving a multiple of sources to choose from. This is what makes biofuel energy an attractive source of fuel for the future. One company named Algenol is leading the world in algae research development that they claim will revolutionize the biofuel industry completely. Challenges Base Applications In our base image we currently include into the image several base applications, these are both baked into the actual image file and installed after the OS utilizing a Task Sequence. With WICD we found it difficult and time consuming to utilize this toolset to try and include all of our base applications into the provisioning pack process, due the nature of the wrapper, applications having prompts that cannot be answered, and the nature of these applications frequently changing a different solution is needed. What we found was that instead of trying to include all of the base applications in the provisioning pack in and of itself we only include the SCCM client and then we created an SCCM Task Sequence that can be executed after the other tasks of the provisioning packs are completed and a Tech signs into the device. If we wish to try and approach this by making the provisioning pack further inclusive it will take a large time investment, both upfront and continually as the version of these applications change every 3 6 months. Naming One of the steps in our imaging process today is to apply a standard naming convention based on the chassis, OS, OS architecture, site code, and the last X of the serial for randomization. Due to the complex nature of this convention it is not compatible with the provisioning pack process. The naming convention was put into place to allow IT resources to quickly discern relevant information around an ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The tomato is another plant that has acquired global prominence from humble origins. It originated with the Inca and migrated north to the Maya and the Aztecs, where the Spanish brought it to Europe, and like its cousin the potato, it is a member of the Nightshade family. The tomato took sometime to gain a foothold as people believed it to be poisonous, but when it took off, it took off energetically. The Italians and French were the first to embrace it. Today the tomato is taken for granted as a common menu item. We consume it everyday in pizza, Italian food, and in almost any salad you can think of. It is the main ingredient of two of the world s most popular condiment s ketchup and salsa. In some cultural groups, religion dictates the care that is given and by whom (Pacquiao, 2016). The purpose of this paper is to discuss an ethical dilemma that I have encountered in my nursing practice and how the dilemma was perceived. Culturally congruent care will also be defined. Describe an Ethical Dilemma Working in obstetrics and gynecology, the patient population is all female. We see many Muslim patients from Arab countries. In any obstetric or gynecology scenario Muslim women must have a female provider (Mclean et al., 2012). We had a patient scheduled with one of the male physicians for the first obstetric appointment, where a physical exam would be completed. When the patient arrived, her spouse informed the staff that she cannot be seen by a male provider. The male physician was not familiar with this preference. He was frustrated because when this patient presents to the hospital for delivery, there may not be a female on call to care for her. • 23. Analysis Of The Poem Charge Of The Light Brigade And ... While both Alfred Lord Tennyson and Wilfred Owen describe war in great detail in their works Charge of the Light Brigade and Dulce Et Decorum Est, respectively, Tennyson describes the courage and honor of warfare, whereas Owen goes into more detail about the horrors and atrocities that go hand in hand with war. Tennyson describes a battle in which 600 bold and courageous men storm a valley, which he refers to as the Valley of Death (line 7), to meet their almost inevitable death. Owen in his Dulce et Decorum Est, describes a scene from World War I in which soldiers are bombarded with gas shells. In this essay I will argue that despite their differing subjects and themes, both Tennyson and Owen s work prove that the honor and courage of the soldiers comes directly from the hardships they must endure. The fact that the men knew the dangers of fighting the battle and knew that they were facing death is the factor in which Tennyson draws the theme of courage. In line 23, he states: Boldly they rode and well, into the Jaws of Death (lines 23 4). In order to describe the experience of war throughout his work, Alfred Lord Tennyson describes the courage of the 600 men who rode into the Jaws of Death, to fight for victory even though they were facing inevitable death. Although they fight valiantly, they are eventually ransacked by the gun fire of their opposition. The 600 are forced to retreat back from the valley, where even more men are killed. After safety, everyone involved in any sort of airport operations, works on increasing efficiency in order to avoid delays and having to spend additional money. As the airports operations increase, the people in charge will have to come up with solutions to avoid setbacks. Airportplanners have to come up with ideas in order to improve airport facilities and increase the efficiency of the flow. The challenges that come with this type of projects is that sometimes the airports don t have much room for improvement within the airport and don t have room to expand due to surrounding neighborhoods. This is where they have to find the right balance for capacity and delay. To solve this problem first they have to find the hitch and then focus on working on that specific area. For example, it can be a specific terminal, runways, taxiways, or not enough gates. Other alternatives to the matter can be working on distributing the traffic through the off peak times, or to start using other areas to within the airport to decrease the traffic at one specific area. Capacity can be view in two different ways. One is at the rate the aircraft can be handled. Example, the airport may be able to handle the morning rush without having any delays, assuming everything runs smooth without any disturbances. • 32. Sociocultural Food Taboos Under The Larger Umbrella... Preface In this paper, I aim to document various sociocultural food taboos under the larger umbrella concept of the sacred and profane, a sociologically ubiquitous dichotomy found worldwide. I will do so by introducing various cultural examples of food taboos and explanative theories of food avoidance practices. Ideally, this paper will introduce the reader with the complex social pre and proscriptions of the sacred and profane and the affect of which on food consumption practices. Food taboo is present in all societies in one form or another. The extent of food taboos vary between cultures and societies, yet restriction of food resources is ever present in all social systems, even when the taboo goes unnoticed or is accepted under the guise of normative behavior of a particular social group. Supporting this point is the simple comparison of all available food resources to consumed food resources. In no society is the complete available food resources used as food, or perceived as fit for consumption. The food perceived as fit for consumption is considered sacred, nourishing, and healthy, while food resources considered unfit are those tethered to concepts of the profane, unclean, and unhealthy, which ultimately harm the physical and spiritual body. Food taboo acts as a method to ensure or regain both spiritual and physical health and is ubiquitously concerned with the maintenance of wellbeing. Animistic societies are imbedded in a universe of spirits, which when ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 33. Winter Symbolism In Literature Essay When you think of winter what do you usually think about? I think about the freezing temperatures, the ice, and the snow. However, in literature winter can be symbolic of many things. The dark, sadness, old age, and death are just some of the things winter can symbolize in literature. The songs California dreamin by the Mamas and Papas and A hazy shade of winterby Simon and Garfunkel are both about winter but mean very different things. Foster s How to Read Literature Like a Professor will also be referenced in order to help show the meanings of these pieces. California dreaming is a very simple and straightforward song;. It has three short verses and a chorus that repeats a couple of times. California dreamin on such a winter s day is repeated throughout the song. This is the main essence of the song. The narrator is telling us that he likes the warm and sunny days of California more than the cold harsh winter. Throughout this song we learn of other things that the narrator dislikes which are gray skies and brown leaves. These signify the arrival of winter which saddens the narrator. There s also a deeper meaning that can be figured out with the help of Foster s work. In his book he tells us that the cold often can symbolize sadness and that warm often symbolizes happiness. One of the many possible meanings that the mamas and papas could be trying to convey is that it isn t easy to be happy. In the song the narrator arrives at a church and is going to stay. Even though he isn t very happy he would rather be in the church than in the cold as shown in the next verse where he starts to complain about the cold again. We can learn from this message to be thankful for what we have even though it isn t what we want because it could always be worse. In A Hazy Shade of Winter by Simon and Garfunkel the narrator sends a clear message that he does not like the arrival of winter. When you hear the song you can tellhow much he doesn t like the winter anytime anything related to it is said. His voice becomes low, dull and lifeless. The way he sings tries to makes you associate sadness with the winter. To the narrator the winter may be sad because it is cold but if we look deeper into the song we ... Comparison and Contrast of Utilitarian, libertarian, and deontological ethical theories Ethical theories are based on previous explained ethical principles each emphasizing different aspects of an ethical dilemma leading to a resolution based on the particular theory guidelines. Utilitarian theory is found in the ability to predict the consequences of the action and so the choice that yields the most benefit to most individuals is the ethically correct choice. This theory allows for the comparison of the predicted solutions (The Blackwell Guide to Ethical Theory, 2013). The outcomes will look at the results and the positive or negative effects. It is at this point that these actions are considered to be right or wrong. Goodness is when there is an emphasis on promoting activities that will create happiness versus despair. The outcome and the levels of joy will determine if specific actions are considered to be morally correct. This theory mainly focuses on the ends. Deontological theory states that people should adhere to their duties and obligations when analysing an ethical problem, hence expression of the view to either forbid or permit actions (Kolb, 2008). After reading Wuthering Heights, read Remembrance by Emily BrontГ« and compare the actions and feelings of Heathcliff in the final chapter of Wuthering Heights to the feelings of the speaker in the final stanza of Remembrance. The novel Wuthering Heights and the poem Remembrance , both written by Emily BrontГ«, feature protagonists who must cope with the death of their lovers, and in many ways, the two characters are similarly affected by this. The actions and feelings of Heathcliff in the last chapter in Wuthering Heights, however, stand in sharp contrast to the last stanza of Remembrance . Heathcliff, the protagonist of Wuthering Heights, and the speaker of Remembrance have different views on love(both before and after death). Consequently, while Heathcliff embraces death in the final chapter to be with his love, the speaker of Remembrances learns to stop dwelling in the past. A crucial difference between Heathcliff and the speaker in Remembrance is that the two characters have very different perspectives on love, death, and loss. In the final chapter of Wuthering Heights, when Heathcliff is aware that he is dying, he is joyful for the first time since Catherine s death.
