2. Deadlines
The deadline set for my magazine to be finalized and sent out to the general
public was February 6th 2018. I released the magazine a couple of days into the
second month of the year as it means I could include all of the information
about what has happened both of Christmas and the first month of the year.
This gave me time to get a lot of information together as a lot happens towards
the end of and at the start of the year. Some celebrities might even say ‘new
year new music’ or ‘new year new me’.
3. Post production skills/safe working practices
To start off with, we opened a new Photoshop document and used ‘international paper’ to get the
correct size for the magazine (on the DPS the width is doubled). Once the document was opened,
we used the ruler tool to place guide lines. This is so that when printed the features on the pages
don’t end up spilling off the page as that would look unprofessional. After this the gradient tool was
used for the background. For the main image, I used the magnetic lasso tool to get the main image
from the original photo and onto my background. After this we used the eraser tool due to the
image still having a little bit of its old background around the edges, by doing this the image looks
much smoother. For the text I went to Dafont.com and chose the best text for my magazine.
Lastly, I found a barcode and placed social
media icons on it. This is to allow the
audience to know that we have social media
accounts that they can follow. I placed the
barcode in the bottom left hand corner as
that is similar to my magazine of inspiration
and it does not get in the way of any of the
more important information on the front
cover. The barcode also includes the issue
number and the date of issue.
4. Operating desktop publishing tools
To create the background, I used the bucket tool and the gradient tool to create the
black and white background. To get the title at the top ‘Critical Music’ I got a font from
Dafont.com. I used the same font above the title to list some cover liners. Then I simple
changed the colour of every other name.
5. When taking the photo for the main image on the front cover, I used a white
background which makes it easier to use the magnetic lasso tool to copy the main
image and place it on this piece of work. To make the barcode I got a simple barcode
online and then used a textbox to make the barcode relevant to my magazine.
6. When adding the cover lines on each side of my main image, I mainly just used text
boxes. I was avoiding having the text go over the main image, as my magazine of
inspiration also did this.
7. When adding the cover lines on each side of my main image, I mainly just used text
boxes. I was avoiding having the text go over the main image, as my magazine of
inspiration also did this. Secondly, on the right hand side of the magazine I used the
shape tool to make a white rectangle and used black text over it. I did this as it attracts
the eye and pulls people in, so more copies of the magazine are sold.
8. I started my DPS using a clear canvas of double A4 width wise
as the DPS will go across two pages. I have used guidelines in
order to keep everything on the page straight and looking
professional.
9. I used the gradient tool in order to get the black
fading into the white. The main image has been cropped and
the white background was removed so the model could be
used as the main image.
10. I used white text on the black background to make the artists
name the most noticeable part of the page. As the entire
double page spread is about him, his name should be the most
noticeable on the page.
11. Finally, I added the questions (in red) and the answers (in white) from an interview with the artist on the page. I used the blue
guide lines (now been removed) in order to keep the questions and answers straight and professional. I used the ruler tool to
layout the interview. To create the drop capital wrap around the text I used the pen tool and matched the anchor points up.
12. Proof reading and sub editing
Proof reading over the magazine is very important. This is due to spelling and grammar mistakes
that may be lurking in the magazine. Secondly, due to the magazine being mostly written on a
computer, there can be multiple typos, which you cant have in a magazine going to public. These
little mistakes will make us look amateur and readers are less likely to buy the magazine. Because of
this, we have sub editors. They go through the magazine to ensure that there are no rookie errors
and that the text is articulate and readable to the general audience. After all mistakes are corrected,
the magazine is ready to be printed.
For example, in my magazine instead of ‘rich’ it said ‘rice’. This is a small typo that could be a rather
bad blunder if thousands of copies with this mistake will give us a very bad image and would be a
bad first impression on the audience.
13. Witness statement
My witness statement evaluates how I
have completed my tasks. This witness
statement points out I need to add
screenshots to my flat plan and add my
launch dates in.
14. Corrections to Photoshop work
I took the advice from my witness statement and made
changes to my DPS. I added pages numbers, social medias,
web link, pull quotes, changed the font to look more
professional and added a drop capital. This has made my
DPS look for better since it now looks more professional
than it did previously.
15. Production plan
Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday Sunday
Date of
publication will
be decided, this
gives our teams
a time frame to
complete the
work in a given
time. Also find
an suitable
office space
where the
magazine will be
created.
The editing team of our
magazine will decide upon
topics or content which they
think should be covered in
the upcoming issue of the
magazine. Deciding the most
relevant story’s and picking a
front cover feature
By this stage, the teams
working on our
magazines gather the
content, whilst deciding
what to put into the
magazine. This is a highly
important, due to our
teams needing to get art
work and things which
are relevant into the
magazine while looking
professional

At this point, the
‘Editorial Team’ print out
a hard copy of the
magazine, so they can
read through it until the
entire of the staff is
satisfied that no errors
have been made. But, if
they have been,
corrections are made.
This is a vital stage as it
ensures that no silly
mistakes have been
made and the layout is
correct and looks good.
Only when the magazine
has met the satisfactory
needs of the ‘editorial
team’ will it be released
to the general public.
After satisfying the
‘Editorial team’ the
magazine gets sent to the
printers, who literally just
print the magazine for
you. Here, the magazine is
‘Pre-Pressed’ and the
magazine has one final
check to ensure that all
images and fonts have
gone through correctly.
The printers print out a
couple of copies and send
it back to the editorial
team.
The ‘Editorial
team look over

they are satisfied
with the print
they have
thousands of
copies printed so
they are able to
meet the demand
of their audience
who all want the
issue.

18. Font styles
I like these fonts for my masthead as they are not too complicated and they are simple
so are easy on the eye. Yet they still attract the eyes as they are all something
different, which can interest the consumer. They are not too boring nor too
complicated, so people will like the look as it is not in-professional, which can attract a
wider audience as more people may feel comfortable reading it.
19. House style (CM)
Colour scheme
The colours in which I will use will mainly be red and white. With an easily readable font style so
it attracts more readers, since the color red attracts they eye and connotes importance, since
whenever there is something important, such as a stop sign it is red, telling people how
important it is and attracting their eye.
Font Style
I will be using Garamond font for the main text (interviews, stories, articles etc) in this magazine.
This is because Garamond font is great for large bodies of text. Secondly, my Masthead will have
Trajan font as it is very clear and bald font with block capitals (based on Roman square capitals),
this attracts they eye and inclines the reader to read on.
Social media
The magazine will also be available on multiple social media platforms, for example Snapchat,
Twitter and Instagram as these are very popular platforms which would mean that many people
are being exposed to my magazine. This is an example of technological convergence.
20. Calendar events
My magazine is being released in February. There are small things
happening such as celebrity birthdays. But Chinese new year also
occurs in the month of February. Chinese new year could actually
positively impact our sales as its tradition on Chinese new year for
people to give money in red envelopes to each other. This means that
teenagers and young adults will have a little bit more money they have
to spend on themselves and may get our magazine as its very
affordable.
21. Risk assessments
As we shot these photos against a white
wall, there are not many hazards. But
on potential hazard is that you could
trip over a small step there was near
where the shot was taken. The risk
assessment form I filled out highlights
all of the little details about how my
shoot was done. This minimizes risks as
everything has been taken into account.
This form also helped with
remembering what we needed,
transport, how we should go about
getting the shots etc.
23. Further development possibility CM
In the future, due to the evolution of technology and everyone using online platforms, I would
develop a website for my magazine. This would bring in more readers as people will be able to
easily order their magazine online or digitally download the magazine for possibly a lower price. I
could have interactive parts of of the site, for example games or a music related quiz. This would
bring in more readers as it becomes more convenient than having to go to the shop in order to buy
the magazine. I could use Wix in order to create the website as they are a good and easy way to
make a website. I could also set up a subscription service, for example the next 12 issues of Critical
Music for the price of 9.
24. Conclusion
In LO4 I talk about my witness statement from my pitch, which gave me
feedback on how I could improve my Photoshop work. So I made
adjustments to my DPS and back page advertisement. The result on
this was very good as you can see in the comparisons on previous
slides. I have also included the production plan, font style, house style
and other details that will effect the sales of my magazine and the
safety of the shot location. Lastly I talked about the future and what
CM may do to gain a wider following.
