Production process
Newspapers most commonly are released on a daily basis, but some may also be
issued twice a day or weekly. The Sun release a newspaper daily in order to deliver
news and other information in an up to date and factual manner. The process of
producing a daily news source will start with a meeting with the papers editors (the
editor of the Sun is Tony Gallagher). With a specific amount of pages agreed upon,
editorial assignments are sent to different departments. After the paper has been
edited. The manufacturing process will begin. This will start off with Typesetting, this is
essentially arranging the type or process the data for text that is to be printed. After
this, image transference takes place, this is when the final version of a page has been
approved and are sent to a process department. Images are then put on the page
through the use of a ‘stripper’. Finally, after being completed the issue is printed using
an enormous machine.

Products
Not only does the Sun produce newspapers, they also have a website and an
app where people can get up to date news. The Sun have made these
products so that more people can get access to the news and start to
recognize the Sun’s logo. Due to newspapers being viewed as ‘old fashioned’
it is important that they cater to this and create a digital version.
The digital version of The Sun provides news to
those who are younger. This is because newspapers
have become outdated as we have access to all of
the news on our phones now.

newspaper-readers-platforms/
Readership
The median age for newspaper readers is 53.5. Newspapers readership
mainly consist of people who are in the ‘old age’ life stage. The reason why
newspaper readership consists of elderly people and not a younger
generation is because you can get any and more news on your phone than
once a day from a newspaper. The younger generation are able to keep up to
date with all news as it is happening and even news that would’nt be included
in the paper. Therefor, newspapers are pointless as you can get more news
faster with a device that fits in your pocket. However, elderly people may not
want to change, therefor will still buy a paper everyday.

Marketing/Promotion
The Sun does multiple promotions as a part of their marketing campaign in order to
increase the amount of newspapers being sold. For example, a couple of years ago,
the Sun had a promotion where you would get a free Lego model when you bough a
Sun newspaper. This generally would last about a week with a different model each
day. Some people wanted to bought the paper in order to get the model for a child,
others would buy multiple papers in order to get multiple toys and sell them on eBay.
Therefor, the Sun would have seen a huge increase in newspaper sales, thus making it
a successful marketing campaign.
A lot of the time, most of the Lego
models the Sun were giving away were
of already popular characters. For
example, Thor and Batman. This caused
an increase in demand as many people
know of these characters and collectors
will want them. Therefor, there will be
another incline in newspaper sales,
making the Sun successful at marketing
and promoting.
Advertisers
The Sun use other social media platforms such as Snapchat on their discover page so
that more people will read their articles and know about them, therefor will recognize
the logo and may be more inclined to download the app or get a paper. The Sun’s daily
edition on Snapchat reaches up to 1 million readers per day. The Sun are also making
good money from this as there are about 3 adverts within the 12 slides the Sun have
made and Snapchat share the advertising revenue.
The Sun target a younger audience with their
daily Snapchat editions. Some of the
celebrities included may not be included in
the newspaper as there story isn't big enough
or most people wont know who they are. For
instance, todays Sun paper’s front page is
headlined ‘Dec’s anger at my drink drive
crash, Ant reveals arrest talk’. This kind of
story will always make it into the paper as Ant
and Dec are two very famous celebrities,
however many people have probably never
head about Nadia Essex or Roxanne Pallett.
Unless you watch what ever show they are or
were on.
Distribution
The sun mainly distributes their products their newspapers to newsagents
and other chain shops such as WH Smith and supermarkets. Other than this,
there are normally places outside of train stations where you can get a paper
quickly and easily. Due to the amount of papers picked up outside train
stations, most people acquire a paper for free on the train as they are often
left. The Sun has 4.2million readers per day, which makes it one of the UK’s
leading newspapers.

Newspaper Front page deconstruction
Masthead- On every issue
of The Sun, the masthead
features their bright read
logo with white text.
These are color's that
compliment each other
and attract the consumers
eye. This logo is also very
important as it lets people
will recognize it easily and
know what it will be
including.
Lead Story- the main story of
newspapers will be summed up
into a few words to be put onto
the front cover in order to
interest the consumer and incline
them to read that paper. For
example ‘1200 killed by mental
patients’ is a great headline as
this will catch most peoples eyes
and the majority of the public
will want to find out what
happened.
Display Advert- the connotations
behind the advert ‘I got £20,000’ with
the Sun lotto is made to make people
believe they actually have a good
chance in winning that prize, however
it is very un-realistic. You are literally
more likely to be killed by a vending
machine than win the lottery. Therefor,
the advert is trying to convince people
that something that is very unlikely to
happen has a good chance. Some
people will see this ad and believe it so
buy the paper. This is good for The Sun
as it means they are getting more
sales.
The story begins
under the heading.
This will pull in the
reader and then they
will buy the paper in
order to read the rest
of the story
Newspaper DPS deconstruction
Main image: on a DPS (double page spread) the main image will
dominate the majority of one of the pages. The image plays a
huge role in telling the story and giving the reader more material
so they can fully understand the article. For instance, in this DPS
we see Alex Salmond making multiple hand gestures across 4
images, this insinuates that he is trying to explain himself.
Page number: At the top
right and left hand
corner of the paper we
can see the page
number with the date of
the papers release. The
page number is
important as
newspapers can get
mixed up and the page
numbers will let the
reader know what page
they are on and what
page they will be turning
onto next.
Headline: the headline is
written using large bold
font. This is so that it can
catch the readers
attention and acts as a
title to the story/article
they are about to read.
For example, ‘Where’s
the economy recovery’
allows the reader to
know that this article will
be talking about Alex
Salmond explaining how
he plans to recover the
UK economy after
nothing had been done
Associated images: associated images are smaller
images that are also associated with the story/article.
They have been placed throughout the article in areas
where the text around the image is relevant. This helps
the reader understand the story fully as there is an
image to go with it.
Newspaper Website page analysis

What is included? The Sun
website’s main advantage over the
physical copy is that on the
website, users are able to access
the kind of content they want with
the click of a button. For example,
if I just wanted to read Sport
articles, I have an option that
allows me to do that. Second to
this, you are able to access the UK
Sun, Irish Sun, Sun bingo and The
Sun dream team. This is good as it
means that multiple users will be
using the site for different reasons,
therefor they get higher user
traffic, meaning their brand
awareness increases and they will
make more from the
advertisements on their website.
Social media links: when you
scroll right down to the button of
the page, you will find social
media links to The Sun’s Facebook
and Twitter page. This shows the
user where else they can get
news from The Sun. Therefor,
increasing the awareness of The
Sun as more of there posts and
tweets will be shared as their
following increases.
Information: as The Sun are a news
source, it is vital that they keep the
information on the page updated with
the most relevant news. This is so that
people do not miss out on recent and
relevant news.
Layout: the website has a very
standard layout through the use of a
Navigation Bar and scrolling. The logo
is found at the top of the page slightly
to the left. This keeps the website
consistent with the physical copy and
allows people to know that it is
associated.
Similarities and differences to physical copy:
in many aspects, the Sun’s website is very
similar to the physical copy. For instance, the
Logo at the top and the same color scheme.
This is important as it lets people know that
this is associated with the physical copy.
However, the website will have more articles
as you can put more on a website than a
physical newspaper
Featured Article analysisHeadline: the headline is
written using large bold
font. This is so that it can
catch the readers
attention and acts as a
title to the story/article
they are about to read.
For example, ‘Head-
Stamp thug guilty of
murder’ as the main
headline will catch all of
the readers attention as
this criminal has been
given a name that
insinuates he is guilty of
multiple murders. This
makes for a interesting
story as it is real, therefor
the readers (the general
public) will be intrigued
and will want to read the
rest of the article.
Page number: At the top left
hand corner of the paper we can
see the page number with the
date of the papers release. The
page number is important as
newspapers can get mixed up
and the page numbers will let
the reader know what page they
are on and what page they will
be turning onto next.
Main image: the main image is of who I
presume is the subject of the article. This gives a
face to this story, which makes it feel more real.
Therefor, readers will be more likely to read the
rest of the articles as they want to know the
detail of what this man has done and what the
consequences are for him.
Citizen Journalism: while reading
this article, readers may be
inspired to look deeper into the
topic and write their own article
on it and submit it to The Sun, as
they do take submissions for
Featured Articles.
The Sun do the majority of their advertisement through collaborative work. Essentially
they will work with someone or another company in making something for the general
public. This means that the audiences from both parties will become aware of the
other company, therefor increasing popularity and sales. For example, before
England's great World Cup campaign in 2018, The Sun uploaded a YouTube video of
the players training with Royal Marines. This is also the most viewed video that is in
The Sun’s YouTube channel, therefor it definitely increased the brand awareness of
The Sun, making it a successful advertisement. The Sun also has a Fantasy Football
league. This is good as their target readership are young adults, the majority of which
being male. Many young males like football and may have a fantasy football league
with their friends. Therefor, by creating a platform to do this will increase brand
awareness to their main target readership.
Genre and content
As The Sun is a newspaper, they cover a wide range of genres and content in order
to give the news to the public. Both big news and small news is covered in The
Sun. For example in one issue they could be talking about Brexit but the next day
they may make the main story about a celebrity. The Sun tends to cover stories
that will interest the general British public who love fried breakfasts, Sunday
roasts, tea and The Sun newspaper.
The content The Sun covers differs dependent on the front cover. The front cover
dictates the theme and mood of the entire newspaper. As The Sun generally put a
humorous twist on the articles, even when talking about a serious subject, it can
help the reader feel more relaxed, which makes them want to buy The Sun more
often. This will also attract more readers as more people would rather read a
humorous article than one that took itself very seriously.
Style
The Sun has a rather humors style for a newspaper. This is because having a humorous style will
attract more readers. A funny and intriguing headline is vital in order to sell the paper. This is
because the headline is the first thing that people will read, therefor the headline will be the
ultimate determining factor in weather someone buys the newspaper or not. Therefor, The Sun will
keep a consistent humorous style from the front page and throughout the paper. This is because
the reader will enjoy humorous articles that still give the news.
If The Sun did not use a humorous style, they would not be as popular as they are as theirs main
readership consists of people who enjoy that sort of content. Due to this, The Sun will keep on
using humor in their articles in order to keep their current readership.
Target readership
The target readership of The Sun are people aged 15-24. This is due to the slightly
mature and humorous content. More Males read The Sun than females. This is
because the majority of The Sun’s content is written to appeal to young adults. For
example, people who may be coming out of college or University going into the work
place. On the commute into the workplace, if on public transport, then they will be
more likely to read a newspaper. Therefor, a large portion of The Sun’s readership is
that of a young adult, whom may want to read a paper on their commute and pick The
Sun.

Production Process
Dates of
publication
The first thing in which
you must do is set up a
date of publication. The
date of publication is
simple the date that you
are trying to get you
magazine release by as a
finished product, making
it available to the
general public. Once this
date has been agreed
on, you now have a
schedule to run on, the
schedule is your plan on
how you are going to be
able to meet your date
of publication. Proper
management of the
schedule is vital to
meeting your date of
publication.
Managing the
schedule
This step is of high
importance. As if you
want your magazine to
be produced
successfully, and meet
the date of publication,
it is vital that the
schedule is managed
well. Your schedule
should be made in a way
so that there are
provisions for certain
mistakes so that even
when mistakes happen,
you will still be able to
meet the date of
publication you had set
previously. This is why a
good management of
the schedule is
absolutely vital.
Editorial and
budgets
The editorial decisions
mainly involve the
magazines editorial
teams getting together
and deciding amongst
themselves what topics
they want to include in
the coming up issue of
the magazine they are
working for. Essentially,
the editorial team talks
about multiple content
stories, interviews,
photographs, etc that
will be in the coming
issue. There is also a
budget to this, which
will mostly be spent
towards the production
of the magazine,
interviews for example.
Content
acquisitions
The content acquisition
process is the most
important step, as
without any content, the
magazine wouldn't’t
work at all since it would
be empty. Thus, content
is the most important.
There are 2 major ways
in which content can be
gained for a magazine.
Firstly, in-house staff
writers. Secondly,
though external writers
(who earn commission)
to write on topics that
are specialist in nature.
At this stage, artwork
and graphics are also
being worked on to
speed up the total
production process.
Production process
Sub-editing
Sub-editing focuses on
one major thing, which
is how good the quality
of the magazine is. If
there us no sub-editor,
they editor will do this
job. This step involves:
Checking accuracy of
facts
Making sure words are
spelt correctly
Checking grammar/
punctuation
All articles follow the
correct house style
Working on page layout
Page Layout
In big publications, there
is a special team who
are responsible for page
layouts, they’re called
they layout staff. There
job is essentially to
typeset and layout the
various pages that come
together, to make the
magazine. In performing
this task, they use a
powerful DTP program,
for example InDesign or
PageMaker to get their
job done to a high
standard. This is also the
time that adverts are
placed in the magazine.
Proofreading
Once the Page Layout
has been completed, the
next stage is
proofreading. The
editing department will
print a copy of the
magazine for the
purpose to be read
through carefully to find
any spelling errors or
grammar mistakes. After
this mistake is found, it
is quickly corrected by
the DTP file. The
magazine is proof read
until everyone is happy
and satisfied with the
copy and are sure there
are no mistakes.
Distribution
Lastly, the final stage is
distribution, where the
magazines, after being
printed are boxed and
distributed to the
retailers who sell the
copy to the general
public.

Readership
The majority of the readers of Q magazine are male (77%). This is because
many of the artists in Q target a mainly male audience and Bauer media are
sure to use the ‘male gaze’ on a lot of their front covers. The median age of Q
magazine readers is 39. This may be slightly high as it is based on the
psychical copy of the magazine, not physical and hard copy's are now seen as
out dated. Therefore, more of the older generation will actually buy the
physical copy as apposed to getting a digital copy.

Above the line (ATL)
Above the line is Mass Marketing as it is not targeted at anything in particular. This
means that the spread on this kind of marketing is very wide
This seeks to build the brand more than the product and inform everyone of a
certain event that may be happening at that time. For example, Coca-Cola during
the Christmas period. It is all about the brand awareness increasing and less so
about how well the individual product does.
Above the line an occur on TV adverts, whether that be local, national or
international. It can also be put used in Print (Newspapers, magazines etc.) and by
Radio.
An advantage of above the line marketing is that it has a wide reach, so better
communicates with the audience. It almost defines the brand
However, a disadvantage would be that it is a high cost and a high production, so a
lot of money needs to be flooded into it in order to make it remotely successful. Q
magazine has TV adverts in order to reach a large target audience.
Source: https://www.face2face-marketing.com/atl-btl-ttl-
marketing-definitions-examples/
Below the line (BTL)
Below the line is promoted in smaller amounts than Above the line marketing
as it is more one to one and features the distribution of of pamphlets,
handbills, stickers, promotions, brochures placed at point of sale, on the roads
through banners and placards. They are specific and direct, which means they
are in the niche market. Things such as cookies found on various web sites
would be below the line as cookies are specifically targeted.
Normally, Below the line will feature a point of sale, which essentially is a deal
that would incline a consumer to buy the product as they get an immediate
benefit back from it. For example, a deal that was buy one get one free would
be a point of sell as the consumer may now buy it just because they got one
free.

Advertising
Q does a lot of advertisement through their social
media. This can also be seen as promotion as they
are using social media platforms in order to gain a
wider following so more people will purchase their
magazine as it is wider known.
Two of Q’s largest social media platforms are
Instagram and Twitter. These are both social
networks that give you recommendations based
on what you already follow. So for instance,
someone who follows a lot of music pages may
find a post from Q on their explore page as it is
related to who they follow. This means that more
music fans will discover Q and may buy the
magazine. This would increase sales and profits as
the magazine becomes more widely known so
more people will buy it.
Distribution
Distribution is the process by which the goods are supplied to the consumer.
Q magazine is also available online, which is why there are less hard copies in circulation. Q
magazine is not sold as a hard copy in the US, only in the UK and online.
You can subscribe online to get your magazine sent straight to your home. You are able to
choose what you want. Also there are deals and you can gift a subscription. You can get Q
magazine in every country as it is an online service and most countries in the world have
internet access. It may not be in their native tongue but t is still Q magazine. Q is printed in
many languages.

Genre
Generally speaking, Q magazine covers the general business going on in the music
world. For instance, on the front page of the Q web page, talking about most of the
genres. For instance, under latest Q, one talks about the ‘epic return of queens stone
age’ to an article talking about the ‘heavy heavy story behind the N.W. A biopic.
Obviously this is a huge difference between audiences, it really ranges. From writing
on the ‘epic return of queens of the stone age’ to talking about an argument which
happened years ago between people who essentially lived in the ghetto until they
found success. Many other music magazines would stick to one genre, but Q has a
range of genres

Each issue of Q include many
different genres, from rap to rock,
which both cover the same age
range really (13-30) yet, generally
the people who listen to these
kinds of music are completely
different so it even attracts a
variety in a particular age range.
Content
Q magazine covers many different genres and forms of music, from personal life to stage life. For
instance talking about the falling out of N.W.A.
Second to this, the tab on the official Q website has a complete range of things you can do, as you
can see from the picture, you can even pick what exactly you want to be taking in, an interview,

Form and style
Q’s front pages on most of their magazines mainly consist of Red, Black and White.
Generally it has the main star who is featuring in the copy front and center with a
white background with either a Black Q or a White Q on the red background (which is
their normal logo. But it is always towards the top left of the page.
Q magazine is approximately 30.6 x 22.2 x 1.2 cm, which is around the size of a
magazine, however the dimensions on devices vary dependent on what device you
are using.
Throughout the entire magazine, Q is rather consistent with font, color scheme etc.
this make the magazine come across as more professional as it doesn't’t look like it is
a complete mess, it has order to it.
Target Audience
Hartley
Age- the age of the general consumer of Q magazine is 16-25. This is because the wordy content, they
start working working so can pay monthly, it is not very childish it is professional looking and it is a big
name. People older than 25 may feel like they have out grown the magazine as it is filled with bright reds,
which they may not find as appealing in their older age like they did in their youth.
Gender- Q magazine is a unisex magazine. This is because Q cover multiple genres and multiple artists
in the music industry. There is so much content in every magazine, there is always at least one article that
will appeal to one sex in particular or both. This means that Q are reaching a wider demographic as they
are appealing to both male and females. This means that Q have the ability to sell more magazines and
make a higher profit.
Class- the main consumers of Q magazine will generally fall into the working and middle class category.
This is because they will be comfortable for example sitting on a train reading the magazine on the
commute to work. However, those who are upper class may feel too ‘sophisticated’ to be reading a
magazine like Q on public transport (where most physical pieces of media are consumed).
Target audience
Katz Uses and Gratification
Personal identification- many people are able to identify with Q magazine as it covers a wide range
of genres. This allows a wide audience to personally identify with at least one part of the issue, the front
cover normally includes cover lines that tell the consumer what other artists are featured other than the
main feature. Seeing these names inclines the consumer to purchase the magazine as they personally
identify with their favorite artists, so will want to know what the article is about.
Personal relationship- since Q are a huge magazine in the music industry, they have the ability to get
interviews with some of the biggest celebrities of today. These celebrities have strong and loyal fan
bases full of people who genuinely care about them as if it was a close friend. Therefor, when they see
Ed Sheeran on the front cover for example, they are heavily inclined into buying the magazine as they
want to know the latest news on how their favorite artist is doing and what he has to say. This can of
course go for just about any artist as most of the artists featured in Q have a strong and large fan base.
Inform and educate- according to Katz, Q magazine informs and educates the reader with everything
that has happened in the last month in the music industry. Q magazine get their message across using
interviews, music reviews, articles and details on how the interviews took place.
Diversion- when the reader is reading an article about their favorite artist, they escape from reality while
they are reading the text as the are so interested and become pulled into it due to their favorite artist being
featured.
Target audience
Audience theory
Socio-economic needs- Q magazine will generally be for an audience who fall into C2 and C1. This is
because these categories mainly include jobs that someone may do as soon as they leave school or
University, they are young adults, which is who Q’s main audience is. People who fall into the A category
are not likely to read Q magazine as they may feel too sophisticated to do so and would opt for reading a
magazine more like Forbes for example.
Maslow hierarchy of needs- Q magazine caters towards the basic safety needs according to
Maslow. As Q magazine releases a new issue every month, the consumers are relaxed as the know there
will be a new issue every month. This gives them a sense of safety and security as they can always rely
on the release of Q to update them on all of the last months news in music.
The idea of the pyramid is
you need everything
below to be able to be at
the top. So when people
are going to buy a
magazine, they will need
all of these to be
interested in purchasing a
magazine.
Conclusion
Through out Lo1 I have researched about both Q and Mojo. I
have looked at the purpose and meaning of the logos and
annotated them. Spoken about the form and style. What genre
they cover and even their target audiences and how frequently
they release their issues. I have also annotated multiple forms of
media for each, such as their websites. This gives me some
inspiration for my future magazine as they have both clearly
reached their target audience and become a very successful and
popular music magazine.

  • 1.
  • 2. Production process Newspapers most commonly are released on a daily basis, but some may also be issued twice a day or weekly. The Sun release a newspaper daily in order to deliver news and other information in an up to date and factual manner. The process of producing a daily news source will start with a meeting with the papers editors (the editor of the Sun is Tony Gallagher). With a specific amount of pages agreed upon, editorial assignments are sent to different departments. After the paper has been edited. The manufacturing process will begin. This will start off with Typesetting, this is essentially arranging the type or process the data for text that is to be printed. After this, image transference takes place, this is when the final version of a page has been approved and are sent to a process department. Images are then put on the page through the use of a ‘stripper’. Finally, after being completed the issue is printed using an enormous machine. Source: http://www.madehow.com/Volume- 2/Newspaper.html
  • 3. Products Not only does the Sun produce newspapers, they also have a website and an app where people can get up to date news. The Sun have made these products so that more people can get access to the news and start to recognize the Sun’s logo. Due to newspapers being viewed as ‘old fashioned’ it is important that they cater to this and create a digital version. The digital version of The Sun provides news to those who are younger. This is because newspapers have become outdated as we have access to all of the news on our phones now. Source: https://www.newsmediaalliance.org/age- newspaper-readers-platforms/
  • 4. Readership The median age for newspaper readers is 53.5. Newspapers readership mainly consist of people who are in the ‘old age’ life stage. The reason why newspaper readership consists of elderly people and not a younger generation is because you can get any and more news on your phone than once a day from a newspaper. The younger generation are able to keep up to date with all news as it is happening and even news that would’nt be included in the paper. Therefor, newspapers are pointless as you can get more news faster with a device that fits in your pocket. However, elderly people may not want to change, therefor will still buy a paper everyday. Source: https://www.newsmediaalliance.org/age- newspaper-readers-platforms/
  • 5. Marketing/Promotion The Sun does multiple promotions as a part of their marketing campaign in order to increase the amount of newspapers being sold. For example, a couple of years ago, the Sun had a promotion where you would get a free Lego model when you bough a Sun newspaper. This generally would last about a week with a different model each day. Some people wanted to bought the paper in order to get the model for a child, others would buy multiple papers in order to get multiple toys and sell them on eBay. Therefor, the Sun would have seen a huge increase in newspaper sales, thus making it a successful marketing campaign. A lot of the time, most of the Lego models the Sun were giving away were of already popular characters. For example, Thor and Batman. This caused an increase in demand as many people know of these characters and collectors will want them. Therefor, there will be another incline in newspaper sales, making the Sun successful at marketing and promoting.
  • 6. Advertisers The Sun use other social media platforms such as Snapchat on their discover page so that more people will read their articles and know about them, therefor will recognize the logo and may be more inclined to download the app or get a paper. The Sun’s daily edition on Snapchat reaches up to 1 million readers per day. The Sun are also making good money from this as there are about 3 adverts within the 12 slides the Sun have made and Snapchat share the advertising revenue. The Sun target a younger audience with their daily Snapchat editions. Some of the celebrities included may not be included in the newspaper as there story isn't big enough or most people wont know who they are. For instance, todays Sun paper’s front page is headlined ‘Dec’s anger at my drink drive crash, Ant reveals arrest talk’. This kind of story will always make it into the paper as Ant and Dec are two very famous celebrities, however many people have probably never head about Nadia Essex or Roxanne Pallett. Unless you watch what ever show they are or were on.
  • 7. Distribution The sun mainly distributes their products their newspapers to newsagents and other chain shops such as WH Smith and supermarkets. Other than this, there are normally places outside of train stations where you can get a paper quickly and easily. Due to the amount of papers picked up outside train stations, most people acquire a paper for free on the train as they are often left. The Sun has 4.2million readers per day, which makes it one of the UK’s leading newspapers. Source: https://www.newsukadvertising.co.uk/the-sun
  • 8. Newspaper Front page deconstruction Masthead- On every issue of The Sun, the masthead features their bright read logo with white text. These are color's that compliment each other and attract the consumers eye. This logo is also very important as it lets people will recognize it easily and know what it will be including. Lead Story- the main story of newspapers will be summed up into a few words to be put onto the front cover in order to interest the consumer and incline them to read that paper. For example ‘1200 killed by mental patients’ is a great headline as this will catch most peoples eyes and the majority of the public will want to find out what happened. Display Advert- the connotations behind the advert ‘I got £20,000’ with the Sun lotto is made to make people believe they actually have a good chance in winning that prize, however it is very un-realistic. You are literally more likely to be killed by a vending machine than win the lottery. Therefor, the advert is trying to convince people that something that is very unlikely to happen has a good chance. Some people will see this ad and believe it so buy the paper. This is good for The Sun as it means they are getting more sales. The story begins under the heading. This will pull in the reader and then they will buy the paper in order to read the rest of the story
  • 9. Newspaper DPS deconstruction Main image: on a DPS (double page spread) the main image will dominate the majority of one of the pages. The image plays a huge role in telling the story and giving the reader more material so they can fully understand the article. For instance, in this DPS we see Alex Salmond making multiple hand gestures across 4 images, this insinuates that he is trying to explain himself. Page number: At the top right and left hand corner of the paper we can see the page number with the date of the papers release. The page number is important as newspapers can get mixed up and the page numbers will let the reader know what page they are on and what page they will be turning onto next. Headline: the headline is written using large bold font. This is so that it can catch the readers attention and acts as a title to the story/article they are about to read. For example, ‘Where’s the economy recovery’ allows the reader to know that this article will be talking about Alex Salmond explaining how he plans to recover the UK economy after nothing had been done Associated images: associated images are smaller images that are also associated with the story/article. They have been placed throughout the article in areas where the text around the image is relevant. This helps the reader understand the story fully as there is an image to go with it.
  • 10. Newspaper Website page analysis Source: https://www.thesun.co.uk / What is included? The Sun website’s main advantage over the physical copy is that on the website, users are able to access the kind of content they want with the click of a button. For example, if I just wanted to read Sport articles, I have an option that allows me to do that. Second to this, you are able to access the UK Sun, Irish Sun, Sun bingo and The Sun dream team. This is good as it means that multiple users will be using the site for different reasons, therefor they get higher user traffic, meaning their brand awareness increases and they will make more from the advertisements on their website. Social media links: when you scroll right down to the button of the page, you will find social media links to The Sun’s Facebook and Twitter page. This shows the user where else they can get news from The Sun. Therefor, increasing the awareness of The Sun as more of there posts and tweets will be shared as their following increases. Information: as The Sun are a news source, it is vital that they keep the information on the page updated with the most relevant news. This is so that people do not miss out on recent and relevant news. Layout: the website has a very standard layout through the use of a Navigation Bar and scrolling. The logo is found at the top of the page slightly to the left. This keeps the website consistent with the physical copy and allows people to know that it is associated. Similarities and differences to physical copy: in many aspects, the Sun’s website is very similar to the physical copy. For instance, the Logo at the top and the same color scheme. This is important as it lets people know that this is associated with the physical copy. However, the website will have more articles as you can put more on a website than a physical newspaper
  • 11. Featured Article analysisHeadline: the headline is written using large bold font. This is so that it can catch the readers attention and acts as a title to the story/article they are about to read. For example, ‘Head- Stamp thug guilty of murder’ as the main headline will catch all of the readers attention as this criminal has been given a name that insinuates he is guilty of multiple murders. This makes for a interesting story as it is real, therefor the readers (the general public) will be intrigued and will want to read the rest of the article. Page number: At the top left hand corner of the paper we can see the page number with the date of the papers release. The page number is important as newspapers can get mixed up and the page numbers will let the reader know what page they are on and what page they will be turning onto next. Main image: the main image is of who I presume is the subject of the article. This gives a face to this story, which makes it feel more real. Therefor, readers will be more likely to read the rest of the articles as they want to know the detail of what this man has done and what the consequences are for him. If The Sun did not use a humorous style, they would not be as popular as they are as theirs main readership consists of people who enjoy that sort of content. The date of publication is simple the date that you are trying to get you magazine release by as a finished product, making it available to the general public. Once this date has been agreed on, you now have a schedule to run on, the schedule is your plan on how you are going to be able to meet your date of publication. Proper management of the schedule is vital to meeting your date of publication. Managing the schedule This step is of high importance. As if you want your magazine to be produced successfully, and meet the date of publication, it is vital that the schedule is managed well. Your schedule should be made in a way so that there are provisions for certain mistakes so that even when mistakes happen, you will still be able to meet the date of publication you had set previously. This is why a good management of the schedule is absolutely vital. Editorial and budgets The editorial decisions mainly involve the magazines editorial teams getting together and deciding amongst themselves what topics they want to include in the coming up issue of the magazine they are working for. Essentially, the editorial team talks about multiple content stories, interviews, photographs, etc that will be in the coming issue. There is also a budget to this, which will mostly be spent towards the production of the magazine, interviews for example. Content acquisitions The content acquisition process is the most important step, as without any content, the magazine wouldn't’t work at all since it would be empty. Thus, content is the most important. There are 2 major ways in which content can be gained for a magazine. Firstly, in-house staff writers. Secondly, though external writers (who earn commission) to write on topics that are specialist in nature. At this stage, artwork and graphics are also being worked on to speed up the total production process.
  • 22. Production process Sub-editing Sub-editing focuses on one major thing, which is how good the quality of the magazine is. If there us no sub-editor, they editor will do this job. This step involves: Checking accuracy of facts Making sure words are spelt correctly Checking grammar/ punctuation All articles follow the correct house style Working on page layout Page Layout In big publications, there is a special team who are responsible for page layouts, they’re called they layout staff. There job is essentially to typeset and layout the various pages that come together, to make the magazine. In performing this task, they use a powerful DTP program, for example InDesign or PageMaker to get their job done to a high standard. This is also the time that adverts are placed in the magazine. Proofreading Once the Page Layout has been completed, the next stage is proofreading. The editing department will print a copy of the magazine for the purpose to be read through carefully to find any spelling errors or grammar mistakes. After this mistake is found, it is quickly corrected by the DTP file. The magazine is proof read until everyone is happy and satisfied with the copy and are sure there are no mistakes. Distribution Lastly, the final stage is distribution, where the magazines, after being printed are boxed and distributed to the retailers who sell the copy to the general public.

This means that the spread on this kind of marketing is very wide This seeks to build the brand more than the product and inform everyone of a certain event that may be happening at that time. An advantage of above the line marketing is that it has a wide reach, so better communicates with the audience. It almost defines the brand However, a disadvantage would be that it is a high cost and a high production, so a lot of money needs to be flooded into it in order to make it remotely successful. Normally, Below the line will feature a point of sale, which essentially is a deal that would incline a consumer to buy the product as they get an immediate benefit back from it. For example, a deal that was buy one get one free would be a point of sell as the consumer may now buy it just because they got one free. Generally it has the main star who is featuring in the copy front and center with a white background with either a Black Q or a White Q on the red background (which is their normal logo. But it is always towards the top left of the page. Q magazine is approximately 30.6 x 22.2 x 1.2 cm, which is around the size of a magazine, however the dimensions on devices vary dependent on what device you are using. Throughout the entire magazine, Q is rather consistent with font, color scheme etc. this make the magazine come across as more professional as it doesn't’t look like it is a complete mess, it has order to it.
  • 35. Target Audience Hartley Age- the age of the general consumer of Q magazine is 16-25. This is because the wordy content, they start working working so can pay monthly, it is not very childish it is professional looking and it is a big name. People older than 25 may feel like they have out grown the magazine as it is filled with bright reds, which they may not find as appealing in their older age like they did in their youth. Gender- Q magazine is a unisex magazine. This is because Q cover multiple genres and multiple artists in the music industry. There is so much content in every magazine, there is always at least one article that will appeal to one sex in particular or both. This means that Q are reaching a wider demographic as they are appealing to both male and females. This means that Q have the ability to sell more magazines and make a higher profit. Class- the main consumers of Q magazine will generally fall into the working and middle class category. This is because they will be comfortable for example sitting on a train reading the magazine on the commute to work. However, those who are upper class may feel too ‘sophisticated’ to be reading a magazine like Q on public transport (where most physical pieces of media are consumed).
  • 36. Target audience Katz Uses and Gratification Personal identification- many people are able to identify with Q magazine as it covers a wide range of genres. This allows a wide audience to personally identify with at least one part of the issue, the front cover normally includes cover lines that tell the consumer what other artists are featured other than the main feature. Seeing these names inclines the consumer to purchase the magazine as they personally identify with their favorite artists, so will want to know what the article is about. Personal relationship- since Q are a huge magazine in the music industry, they have the ability to get interviews with some of the biggest celebrities of today. These celebrities have strong and loyal fan bases full of people who genuinely care about them as if it was a close friend. Therefor, when they see Ed Sheeran on the front cover for example, they are heavily inclined into buying the magazine as they want to know the latest news on how their favorite artist is doing and what he has to say. This can of course go for just about any artist as most of the artists featured in Q have a strong and large fan base. Inform and educate- according to Katz, Q magazine informs and educates the reader with everything that has happened in the last month in the music industry. Q magazine get their message across using interviews, music reviews, articles and details on how the interviews took place. Diversion- when the reader is reading an article about their favorite artist, they escape from reality while they are reading the text as the are so interested and become pulled into it due to their favorite artist being featured.
  • 37. Target audience Audience theory Socio-economic needs- Q magazine will generally be for an audience who fall into C2 and C1. This is because these categories mainly include jobs that someone may do as soon as they leave school or University, they are young adults, which is who Q’s main audience is. People who fall into the A category are not likely to read Q magazine as they may feel too sophisticated to do so and would opt for reading a magazine more like Forbes for example. Maslow hierarchy of needs- Q magazine caters towards the basic safety needs according to Maslow. As Q magazine releases a new issue every month, the consumers are relaxed as the know there will be a new issue every month. This gives them a sense of safety and security as they can always rely on the release of Q to update them on all of the last months news in music. The idea of the pyramid is you need everything below to be able to be at the top. So when people are going to buy a magazine, they will need all of these to be interested in purchasing a magazine.
  • 38. Conclusion Through out Lo1 I have researched about both Q and Mojo. I have looked at the purpose and meaning of the logos and annotated them. Spoken about the form and style. What genre they cover and even their target audiences and how frequently they release their issues. I have also annotated multiple forms of media for each, such as their websites. This gives me some inspiration for my future magazine as they have both clearly reached their target audience and become a very successful and popular music magazine.
