3. For each Unit throughout Unit 14, I had certain deadline for all of my work. To
complete these deadlines I would do the work and hand them in to Mr Crafts for
marking, he would then send my work back to do corrections, if needed, to make sure
I can push my work up to get a better grade and give me a deadline to complete these
corrections.
4. For the production of my magazine, I managed to use Adobe Photoshop CS5.1.
This was because Photoshop was the simpler way of making the magazine.
I used Photoshop to make the Front Cover and DPS. Also within Photoshop I used
tools to add to the pictures taken of Rhia which I used to make the magazine look
smart and professional.
5. Quick selection tool (W) – I used this tool to select the areas needed, then inversed the selection
to crop out the background in order to put on my magazine and look professional and put the
main focus on the artist
Eye-Dropper Tool – The eye-dropper tool is used to pick up a colour value from the canvas
Ruler Tool – This tool was helpful because it allowed me to line up all the layers correctly on both
the Front Cover and DPS – this helped to make the magazine look more professional
Layers – This allowed me to organise my magazine on which layer should be in front of another
Layer (e.g. I had Rhia as an artist in front of the Masthead which connotes how Rhia is the main
story/very important to the music genre)
Mask – I used the mask tool to keep the individual hairs that the quick selection tool could not
keep to keep the picture more realistic and professional to the spectator
Pen Tool – I used the pen tool (P) along with the ruler tool to create the layer boxes that the text
was written in and create my large letter at the beginning of my article (drop capital) this
wrapped text around the drop capital
Text Tool – I used the text tool to write down quotes, advertisements and the article (Also from
this I used different fonts and colours to create a more eye-catching Front Cover and DPS)
Zoom tool – I used the zoom tool to go into detail of making changes to pictures, writing and
colours
6. Ruler Tool – I used the ruler tool in order to keep pictures, text and titles a line with one
another which made the Front Cover and DPS more proficient
Pen Tool – I used the pen tool (P) along with the ruler tool to create text boxes. This also
allowed me to make my text boxes so it could go around the main picture of the artist
Zoom Tool – I used the zoom tool to get into detail to change bits within my DPS and Front
Cover to keep up the appearance of the DPS and Front Cover without mistakes
Pixel Mask Tool – I used the pixel mask tool to crop around the model, but it allowed me to
keep the individual hairs around her head. This helped the front cover and DPS look more
professional
Layers – I used layers throughout the entire making of the Front Cover and DPS. This is
managed for me to choose which layer could go over another layer – this also made it
easier for me to know which layer I needed where.
Eye-Dropper Tool – The eye-dropper tool is used to pick up a colour value from the canvas
Proof Reading – Proof reading is important because it allows me to look through work and
change any mistakes made, this allows my work to be correct and gives a chance to make
my work look more professional
7. Different Colours for the
Magazine
Red
I like the colour red for
the magazine because
again it is eye-catching
to help get new
viewers or to make it
easy for the viewers to
find it more easier.
Blue
I thought of the colour
blue for my main colour
because it relates to
teenagers more than
adults but it can relate to
boys more than girls
Green
Green may be a good colour
for my magazine because it
is different to many colours
other magazines have.
However it may not be eye-
catching for viewers
Orange
I like the colour orange for my magazine colour because it is
different to many magazines, because they choose eye-
catching colours or black and white –this also makes it easy
for the viewer to easily spot the magazine as they shall know
Purple
Purple may be a good
colour because its bright
and catches the eye of the
viewer but, it may show it
could appeal more to girls
than boys
Yellow
I like the colour
yellow because it
can easily catches
the eye of the
viewer. I also like
this colour because
it appeals to
teenagers and
young adult (my
target audience)
8. In the end, I will be using the colour orange as my main colour for my
magazine. I will also be using white and black. The white will help make the
magazine more neat and look more professional. The black can help make the
magazine bold and stand out more.
Another colour I will use in my magazine will be depending on the type of
artist I will have. This is because I will use a different colour for every artist
VOLUME will interview. For this first issue, I will use purple for the artist of my
magazine.
I think that these colours are altogether important because they make my
magazine more eye-catching to all viewers which is important because it gives
my magazine the better chance to be noticed by new readers. The eye-
dropper tool will be useful because the eye-dropper tool picks up colour value
in the canvas.
9. To make sure that everything within my magazine could look as
suitable and professional as possible, I had to make sure that I proof
read everything.
For example, I made the article for my magazine VOLUME on a word
document. This was so I could see any errors within my work much
quicker and easier.
On Photoshop I also used the ‘hyphenate’ tool. This tool managed to
make sure that my article stayed on one line, and not continue below
it. I felt that this was useful because it would help the reader not get
confused with what they would be reading.
10. I used the Pen Tool (P) along
with the ruler tool to create
the layer boxes that the text
was written in and create my
large letter at the beginning of
my article (drop capital) this
wrapped text around the drop
capital.

11. The eye-dropper tool was used within the making of my magazine in order to pick up a
colour value from the canvas.
The eye-dropper tool also managed to help save the colour swatch for my magazine.
This meant I could repeat the exact same colour throughout the making of my
magazine as it could be saved, and labeled, in Photoshop.
12. To crop background, and keep the individual hairs to help the picture look
more professional, I used the mask tool.
First I selected the model with the quick selection tool. After that I chose
‘mask’, ‘create new mask’. This managed to remove the background
completely, I then used the slides for how much of the hair and clothes
should be selected.
This was useful because it helped my magazine to look as professional as
possible.
13. After completing my magazine pages, I
had received feedback to make sure it
was up to the correct standard.
For the front cover, my correction was to
put a black outline around the barcode
to make the barcode stand out more. I
made this change through the use of
Photoshop.
The corrections I had for my DPS was to
move the VOLUME logo around to the
top right hand corner and put in the
social media logos. I did this again with
the use of Photoshop. Finally, the final
correction was to include the magazine
website more, so I put in the connotation
‘Find out more on Rhia over our
website…’.
I felt that after these corrections it
helped to make my magazine look more
professional.

Changes made
14. For my font style, I used the website
DaFont.com, from this I managed to get a whole
range of different styles best for my magazine. In
the end I narrowed it down to these four
examples (left). In the end I went with my final
font (circled), I chose it because I feel that it
meets all the required standards needed for my
magazine (e.g. Related to music, Eye-catching
and different to other music magazine fonts). I
will only use this font for the Masthead of my
magazine front cover, however it can be found in
pages within the magazine. This is not an
example of copyright as this is a website for the
public allowed to use any of the fonts given.
15. DaFont is a website for all types of uses for different titles and logos. However this
type of searching may be illegal. So I researched the site and found that DaFont’s fonts
are free of charge and legal.
‘The fonts presented on this website are their authors' property, and are either
freeware, shareware, demo versions or public domain.’
16. A main thing which I did change was
the model for my magazine. I firstly
used Lauren as my model for the
magazine, but I felt that her clothing
was not up to the required standers
what I was looking for within my
magazine. So instead I chose Rhia as
my model. I changed it to Rhia because
she gave more of a ‘pop-star’ look
towards my magazine with how she
dressed and keeping to the pose of
what my inspiration magazine was
looking like. However, Rhia did not
wear what I thinking of at the time so
we changed what she wore around
which came out better for the Front
Cover.
17. Here is the Front Cover for my
magazine. What I like about this Front
Cover is that it is filled up with
information that this magazine issue is
including. This is important because it
briefly connotes to the spectator what
this magazine will include in terms of
content and what the magazine is
about. What I also like about this
magazine is the fact that I have
included the logos of Facebook,
Twitter and Instagram (technical
convergence). This will connote to the
readers that this magazine uses social
media to market the magazine, and
they can get involved more with the
magazine and also highlights the
magazine is on different platforms.
18. Here is my Double Page Spread
(DPS). Within it is the main article of
the artist that VOLUME had
interviewed for. This interview also
features on my magazine Front
Cover. What I like about this DPS is
that I have kept the pages neat by
using the ruler and pen tool and this
will give the impression of
professionalism to the spectators.
What is most important in this DPS is
the colours. I have used the same
style and colour that the Front Cover
used which helps illustrate and
emphasize that this is the main
article and also highlight I have kept
the house style and brand identity.
19. In conclusion, I think I managed to make a good magazine. I like how I
managed to keep to the subject of music, and managed to keep to the target
audience that I am aiming for, especially through the social pages I created
through Facebook and twitter.
However my magazine could be improved by creating a Instagram page for
spectators to get involved in, as well as being another form of below the line
marketing.
