World War I (WWI)
TODAY – DAY 2
 Lecture
 Text mark your notes!
 Venn Diagram of Germany, Russia & Britain At War
 Update your timeline
 Video Quiz: The Foot Soldier
 Work on your map activity (last 15 minutes), if not
already completed and handed in for grading.
Let’s Recap Day 1
 We saw how World War I began and
which sides everyone was on.
 We looked at the spark for the war: the
murder of the Archduke.
 We were able to see some of the
modern warfare: new technology,
trench warfare and the end results.
Today’s Lecture
 Today we will be looking at who was involved in
the war and what the pros and cons were for
each of the main powers.
 How did the United States get involved?
 What was Germany’s punishment? Was there
any?
 We will examine the effects of WWI and make
some inferences about how any of what we
review may have been a spark to ignite World
War II.
Germany at War
Yes, these here are on the test!
Pros -
1. Great military - tanks & machine guns;
2. Had powerful submarines used to
control supply shipments in the Baltic
Sea;
3. Very willing to use new technology.
Cons –
1. Fighting a two-front war.
Russia at War
And these too!
Pros –
1. lots of soldiers and a large population
to fight.
Cons –
1. Small amount of transportation to get
around;
2. Shortages of food, ammunition, guns,
and clothes.
Great Britain at War
And these are also on the test!
Pros –
1. Large industrial population; able to make
weapons and supplies;
2. Huge navy; able to blockade Germany;
3. Had colonies all over the world with
people to help fight.
Cons –
1. They were forced to pay for all of the war,
which was making them broke.
Unrestricted Submarine Warfare
1. The Germans made an
announcement that they would
attack ANY vessel near Britain.
2. May 7, 1915 Germany sunk the
Lusitania, a British ship with
128 Americans on it. This really
ticked America off!
What did the soldiers get to eat? 3:04
Zimmerman Note
1. Feb. 1917 – a telegraph was sent
from Germany to Mexico.
2. It stated that Mexico would get
land in the US if they sided with
Germany.
3. America declared war on Germany.
Treaty of Brest-Litovsk
1. March 1918 – a Treaty was signed
between ONLY Russia and
Germany due to Russian Civil War.
2. This Treaty allowed Germany to put
all of its resources towards the
Western front (Great Britain and
US side).
Armistice
1. This is an Agreement between
two counties to stop fighting.
2. One was signed by Germany
and France on November 9,
1918.
Versailles Treaty (1919)
1. Officially ended World War I. “War Guilt
Clause” – put all of the blame on Germany.
2. Germany had to pay money to the Allies for the
money they spent on having to defend
themselves during WWI. 132 billion gold marks
(or $33 billion US dollars!).
3. Reduced German army to low levels.
4. Took land away from the Ottoman Empire,
Germany, Russia, and Austria-Hungary to
create unstable countries.
5. Germany had no say in the provisions of the Treaty.
6. Stripped all of Germany’s colonies (resources).
7. Prohibited Germany from having certain weapons and was
to lead to eventual disarmament.
8. Germany signed under protest.
9. US Senate refused to ratify the Versailles Treaty and took
no responsibility for most of its provisions.
10. Under the Dawes and Young Plans (the provisions for
Germany making financial reparations) they actually only
ever paid about 19-20.5 billion gold mark. Germany’s
estimate is 67.8 billion. (Sounds a lot different, yes?)
Effects of WWI
1. Africa and the Middle East wanted the
independence it was promised but
they didn’t get.
2. Germany was bitter about the War
Guilt Clause (Treaty of Versailles) and
the reparations. This led to a massive
recession in Germany and huge
unemployment rates.
3. Massive worldwide economic depression
because WWI left nearly every country
bankrupt.
4. Established Empires fell giving rise to
weak democracies with no experience.
5. This all gave rise to Authoritarian leaders
who seized power under the promise of a
return supremacy.
 Really cool Flocabulary song about WWI 4:13
