This study evaluated the diagnostic yield of ultrasound-guided forceps biopsy for undiagnosed exudative pleural effusions. 96 patients with non-diagnostic pleural taps underwent ultrasound-guided forceps biopsy and thoracoscopy. Ultrasound-guided forceps biopsy had a sensitivity of 85% for malignant lesions and 88% for tuberculosis, with 100% specificity for both. It provided multiple pleural biopsy samples safely and was better than needle biopsy alone, with a diagnostic yield nearly similar to thoracoscopy but less invasive.
